Good class, but rather difficult tests. There always seemed to be something missing from your notes that would pop up on the test. While Dr. B. may not have the most friendly personality, it is a good class to take.
Good class, good prof. Ate cheese, grew edible mushrooms, and made beer. What is better then that?
Not bad, but the class was hard, often tested on what seemed to be irrelevant things, multiple choice harder than short answer, lab quizzes every week nice.

It is I, the person that wrote the comments for Bio 333 and Bio 335.. If you are able to take a class with Dr. Barta, do so! You may not get the best grade (she's a tough lady!), but you will learn so much. All three were the best classes I had at UWSP

Not an easy teacher, but very fair, friendly, and interested in the subject. Plus she brings her dogs in on test nights! Great lady!
If you want a decent GPA dont take her!
Very hard professor!
if you like bringing down your gpa then take her by all means, but if you are actually trying to get a decent grade avoid her at all cost
Extremely hard for it being a 100 level. Very hard tests and the final is killer, you will need to attend every class, write down everything she says, and study everyday. NOT RECOMMENDED!
Don't take Barta! Her tests are 75 multiple choice questions and 25 short answer. She made a big deal about how she doesn't curve or give extra credit, eventhough her tests are extremely hard. To get a good grade u have to study every day. If u can, Bell is the way to go.
Couldn't stand her. She can't stand to have anyone point out when she's wrong so she sits and lies to you and even changes powerpoint slides to make it look like you're wrong. vindictive and plays favorites. more interested in dogs and motorcycles than teaching. for the record i got a B so it's not like i'm PO'd about a bad grade either.
If you want to learn a lot, but don't care about getting a bad grade, she's the one to take.
What an awful teacher. Tests are impossible, does not curve anything, rarely any extra credit. I was really interested in what was being taught but she made it impossible to get even a deccent grade. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Maybe if she was as interested in teaching as she is in dogs and flying, and she managed to sprout a personality, she'd be tolerable.
ridiculously difficult. in order to get an A you had to devote your life to botany. tests are impossible. hard to approach and talk to. Dont take her! NOT RECOMMENDED!
Very difficult for a freshman level course. Hard to approach for questions.
Taking her for this class is the single worst mistake of my college career. While she may speak eloquently, her tests are at least 2X as long as the other profs. Uses way too many pop quizes (which are very difficult), tests are impossible to get A's in unless you want to memorize the text and her lectures. word to the wise: DON'T TAKE HER!!!
Worst teacher of my life. Spends more time with her dogs than her students. When she screws up she makes excuses or lies. Tests are impossible and loves giving pop quizzes that are extremely hard. Wish i would have seen this before because i wouldnt have had gotten a bad grade. Most of the class failed and could not ask ques. or she would yell.
Greaat professor overall, but her tests and quizzes are very diffucult
Hard course but you learn a lot!!
Loved her. very hard.
She is very smart but not friendly and can be pretty rude to students. very difficult class. you have to go to lecture and write down EVERYTHING she says. Tests are very hard. Study a lot and study often.
As a freshman, this is an extreme mistake taking her for this course. Although she is really smart and can teach well, attendance is necessary, and the tests are next to impossible. I have learned a lot in this class, more than most, yet I'm still almost failing. Not recommended for freshman to take this professor.
hard, hard class. this professor teaches an into course like it was a 300 or 400 level class. has a passion for the material, but goes over it very quickly. would NOT recomend this professor.
Holy crap, she's hard, but brilliant.
Very hard. I was kind of interested in biology. Tests were impossible. I pretty much agree with everybody else. Oh and she expects you to look at your syllabus won't even tell you her office # or where tests are or WHEN they are - I missed the midterm because I didn't look at the syllabus and she didn't talk about it in class!
Professor Barta is a very tough professor but makes herself very available to students and encourages students to ask questions. If you are truly interested or think you're interested in botany/related field Barta is the way to go. Very nice lady and friendly, just a tough professor.
Take this class if you want to kill yourself by the end of the semester
Really hard class, and tests, you need to know every little detail...this class made me change my major...if you want a challenge this is a good teacher for that.
Not as hard as people say. Just memorize your notes for lecture and you will be fine. For lab tests GO TO TUTORING, and know what pictures are online. Overall I learned more in this class then any other so far.
Very hard, I would not recommend for anybody to take her class. The tests are very hard and in order to do well she expects you to memorize every detail of your notes, she will find a way to make a question out of every point made in lecture.
Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this prof at any cost. Immature, morally bankrupt, lets personal issues and indiscretions interfere with teaching and class activities. Rarely available during office hours and rude when she is. Take someone else and save yourself the bad experience. I wish I had.
Really hard course and test. Although she is nice, the class is too hard to be succeed.
Everyone makes her harder than she really is. In reality, yes, she had tough tests but she is very willing to help whenever and in the long run it has helped with other classes. However, take her only if you have at least a semi-interest in plants.
This is a really tough class, and you must always show up, no matter how rotten you feel. Barta is nice enough as a person, except when she writes the Tests, which are extremely difficult. Take her if you love plants, but if not take another prof.
Insanely difficult to approach - when asked questions, she is very rude. I never went to ask her for help because I was honestly scared to ask any questions. I respect her and she knows her plants VERY well (of course), but I would NOT ever take her as a teacher again. For a 100 level Freshman-orientated course, this was extremely difficult.
Tests are far too hard. To memorize over 140 questions for one test that's comprehensive and cumulative is just asking for a failing grade. As an entry level course, this course might as well be bumped up to a 200 or 300 course. Unless you have countless hours to study, don't choose this professor.
hates everything, especially students and their questions which are regarded as stupid. avoid at all cost
None that are legal to post
very difficult teacher. cares more about her dogs than teaching. she resembles a nervous mouse and paces the room while she is teaching. hates being asked questions in class and terrible social skills. cannot communicate with students. goes far too in-depth. do NOT take her unless you don't care about your gpa!!!
I can honestly say it was the worst class I've ever taken, with the worst teacher that i have ever had the pleasure of meeting. It should be a 400 lvl class and want you to know every little thing. Feel free to take her class if you like taking 6-8 pages of nots each class, and having insane questions we never talked about on tests. ABHORING!!!!!!
Interesting material but this is coming from a biology nerd. You will learn a lot but take it from me, YOU DO NOT WANT TO TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA!!! She is very hard to approach, and puts herself above all others. The tests are ridiculous, I studied quite a bit and still did not do the greatest. Go to lab as well.
Professor Barta is a very smart woman, she knows a lot of useful info but I would not suggest taking her class if you want an "easy A". I have a high interest in plants so if you don't care about knowing every little detail steer clear. You can do well on exams if you read the textbook and review/add to your notes. Lab exams=know procedures!
She is interested in what she teaches, but if you are not interested you will not do very well in the class nor will Barta really respect you all that much. Should not be a 100 level class at all. If you can get a different teacher.
Barta will give you a run for your money
Absolutely ridiculous! I do not recommend taking this course; way too much work for a 100 level course.
Barta is a very smart professor, she definitely knows what she is talking about. However, her class is extremely tough. It is way way way to much work for a 100 level class. If you want to get an A I wouldn't count on it unless you plan on spending literally hours every day studying.
Great teacher. Learn a lot if you're willing to put the effort into it!
Terrible, avoid at all costs!
Professor Barta is a very intelligent and knowledgeable person on plant Bio. But she teaches the 130 course like a 300 or 400 level course. Very difficult professor, incredibly difficult exams, and she does not offer very good help.
I liked Terese so much because I noticed her impish, girlish side behind the staunch yet graceful demeanor. She had a great sense of humor, if you piqued her the right way. She cared a lot about things that matter in the world, which I respect. Though, I have to agree that some of the exam/quiz questions came out of what seemed like thin air.
HAARRRDD!Very detail oriented. You will be tested on everything!
I found this professor rather hard to learn from. I also felt she was quite rude to me when I was asking her to clarify something that was missing in my notes.
Worst professor in my college career. Speaks down to students, doesn't call on student who raise their hands. Is very in consistent with grading exams and lab quizzes. You can have the same or better answer as the person next to you but you will get the question wrong while your neighbor gets full credit. DO NOT take this class if you don't have to
Awful professor. Grading seemed very inconsistent and constantly found myself being talked down to by her. The way she organizes the material and flies through it meant I had to reteach myself everything after because it was too confusing. She is smart but has no concept of how to teach students especially at a undergrad level.
If you even remotely care about your GPA avoid this class. She makes you work a ridiculous amount. Cares way to much about details that mean nothing in the real world. She isn't even close to friendly and only helps you if you brown nose her. If you can take a micro class at another campus I suggest you do it. Avoid her like the plague.
I overall liked Dr. Barta, but this class did make you work hard. I have taken both molecular and cell biology and got an A, so I thought micro would be a breeze. Wrong. She covers a lot of material for a 1hour lecture. Taking genetics should be a prereq. The questions on exams are from details so write everything down. Overall, not a bad class.
Honestly the toughest prof on campus. She makes you works insanely hard to even keep a decent grade. There are no prereqs for the class which caught a ton of people off guard and ultimately screwed them over. She expects you have to have full knowledge of previous course material at your fingers types. If you need this, you better pray.
Good note-taking skills are necessary. Tough for freshman who were/are slackers. I absolutely used my textbook, since she talks fast it's important to review material before/after to really absorb it. Do not be afraid to make ? side notes to ask in her office, thats what she's there for! Group tutoring will improve your grade. Stay motivated
First off, Dr. Barta is extremely intelligent and an excellent lecturer, unfortunately she tends to treat students like inferiors and is difficult to approach, especially in lab. When I showed her that my unknown's tests didn't match the literature she told me I must have contaminated the sample.
Will Put Down Students If You Screw Up In Lab. Only states What You Do Bad And NothinG When You Do Something Right
She is very intelligent, and organizes her lectures well, but covers a lot of material. The labs are very practical. You will learn a lot in this course. Be warned, the tests are very detailed, and you will be expected to know basically everything she said in lecture. This is a very difficult course, work hard and never fall behind.
Professor Barta is highly intelligent, and an expert of her field. However, she has absolutely zero respect for students. Today, when she insulted my group member - calling her a "rookie high-schooler" - she earned this review. She doesn't understand what effective communication is, nor does she care to foster a welcoming learning environment.
Very difficult class. She is very specific when it comes to lectures in going into great detail. She does a lot with biochemistrychemistry details and its very hard to understand what she is talking about in lecture. She will always notice what you are doing wrong, but not what you are doing right.
3 Tests. Each covers about 200 pages of material. No study guide or any insight on what will be on the test. If you have a question, you must be stupid.
She is clearly intelligent and lives for this stuff, but she is hard to approach. The tests are tough and hard to study for because she doesn't give you an idea of what will be on it. Go to the group tutoring, that saved me! Definitely go to lecture too.
Dr. Barta is very knowledgeable in what she teaches and you can see her passion. It is obvious she is intelligent and expects a lot of her students. Get ready to take a lot of note you take in class and lecture because she will test you on all of it. She is really great though and if you work hard you should get a solid B.
She looks for very particular answers on exams and quizzes. She also picks very trivial details that were hardly mentioned as questions. You have to know EVERYTHING she ever says. She speaks quietly, so sit in front of class. She is rude to students, condescending, and hovers over you during lab. Pick a different professor.
Barta has her flaws --she can sometimes be rude and doesn't take much crap; however, deep down, she cares and is an expert at micro & is a great lecturer! So if you can put aside "how you feel", and instead realize you're learning SO MUCH, you will appreciate her! She isn't there to babysit --act like an adult and she will respect you. Take her.
Tests can be daunting, but doable with putting some time and effort into class. Dr. Barta might be a bit specific on the information she wants you to know sometimes, but she's a good lecturer (sit towards the front in large rooms). If you are interested in medicine, I strongly suggest taking her for this course. 4.5 would be a closer score.
If you can avoid her, I would strongly advise to. She does not respect her students and makes you feel stupid if you ask her any questions. She seems to not care about helping her students learn. She expects you to know everything before she even lectures on it and wants you to know every little detail about everything for exams. DO NOT TAKE!!
It was supposed to be easier than BIO 333, but it was not. Not a great teacher, and super unorganized. Yelled at us a lot in lab, and extremely difficult to approach. Only 3 of my classmates passed. If between a low C and C, she will give you the low C. Extremely hard exams and quizzes. I do NOT recommend her. Would give her a rate of '0'.
If she is your only option for micro and micro is required for you, either take it at another school, wait a semester, or change your major. Seriously she is that bad. I would never take another class with her and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Her tests are harder than Human Anatomy tests. If you already signed up for her, I am so very sorry!
She does answer your questions, after taking 5 minutes to give you a background. She talks down to many, and will make eye contact with you if you have a question, but won't call on you. She does many lab quizzes which are kind of easy, but also does many lab reports that she grades hard.
Goes through material way to fast
Barta was a hard teacher to start college out with but she really did care for your education if you were willing to put in the work. And if you want to do well you have to put in the work. Daily quizzes could either bring you up at the end of the semester or completely bring you down so you have to study.
**I took her class during COVID** Dr. Barta teaches this class well and it is obviously a subject she enjoys. However, if she was asked a question about an assignment she would get defensive. Her assignment questions and lab instructions were often poorly written and we were supposed to "assume" parts of the data.
Professor Barta is the reason I dropped my biology major. After her class, I did a complete 180 and switched to Communications. She was not encouraging, graded harshly, gave more work than other professors teaching the course, and her lectures were difficult to understand.
she doesn't explain things!! ended up teaching myself.
Don't understand anything about her class. Thinks we know everything. Your supposed to teach us not tell us
She makes things overly complicated for no reason. talks down when questions are asked. More worried about finishing the lecture then making sure kids actually know the material. id wait to take bio 110 next semester if she is the only teacher available.
Dr. Barta is fine at best. I didn't find her terrible only because I knew what I was doing in the class and passed without needing help from her at all. Not very approachable since she sometimes talks down to you when you ask questions. She does quizzes before each lecture that count toward your grade so make sure you show up.
Awful experience. She was pulled from retirement to cover the section I took. Either she had alzheimers or she just didn't care one bit. She explained stuff horribly and made so many mistakes, even on the exams! It was totally unforgiveable. Thankfully I took AP Bio in highschool because if I hadn't, I would have been toast.
