Good Prof, lectures are interesting. Breaks up the 1.5 hour lecture quite nicely. Good at explaining methods. But makes difficult tests which are slightly different that anything done in class.
VERY HARD EXAMS. GOOD AS A PERSON
He makes the toughest exams which are very different than his notes. But overall he's a great prof. He's lectures are awesome, and he's always helpful to all students. Politest prof ever.
great person
Decent guy, pretty clear at explaining methods.Super uptight about everything like people sleeping or texting in class..who cares? Clearly hates it when students ask questions and pretends to thank everyone excessively. Didn't try his own midterm before he gave it to the students, then later discovered it took him an hour longer than we had to write
he simply can't teach. surely he has great knowledge but not as a teacher. his exams are way difficult and far different than his notes! but great personality and politeness.
Most hilarious prof (ok besides Millar)! Likes salsa dancing and telling jokes, very nice guy, gets a little off topic sometimes while teaching but really wants every student to have the best experience possible in his class. Exams are a bit difficult. Not a big structures fan but still enjoyed this class.
He's really funny. Likes to thank everyone alot. He's more interesting than Elwood and Vaziri, but the course is probably the hardest in core civil engineering course. Helpful tutorials, and good in class examples. His exams are horrible.
Does not provide material to actually study.
In this course, he had no idea what he was doing. It was his first year teaching the course and it was evident. Midterm and final were easy but irrelevant to the course - mostly written knowledge based questions (50% of the final) without much emphasis on design. He's a joker, not an instructor. Don't expect to learn much in this class.
Haukaas is strict but funny. Usually he teaches the structural analysis stuff. It showed that this was his first designer course. He used slides and textbooks to cover a lot. Hopefully he goes back to using blackboard like in his other classes. HIs style is fun but exams are hard.
I enjoyed this class. Haukaas is helpful and kind. He really tries to make things clear. His lectures are informative and always well prepared.
I'm not sure why he's got such poor reviews; Terje is great. His exams are on the hard side, but not unreasonable. He is very caring; stopping every 5 minutes to ask if anyone has questions, and answers regardless of how dumb they may be. While he sometimes lacks clarity in the lectures, he is much better face-to-face, and his website is great.
Terje has definitely gotten better than the older reviews below posted. Definitely one of the best professors I've had at UBC.
Terrible classes and even worse exams. Tries to make up the lack of clarity in lectures with jokes.
Tough course, but one of the best I have taken at UBC. Definitely a good teacher. The material is difficult but the lectures and the online notes are great.
The jokes make the class way more enjoyable than other classes. Posting the notes online is very effective and helpful. Very approachable to ask questions.
Appreciate the enthusiasm, makes the lectures much more engaging and enjoyable. Website is excellent; updated regularly & much better than Connect.
The lectures and posted notes on the website are really helpful. The material is well explained in class and the posted notes complement the lectures.
The teaching way of writing on the blackboard is the most effective. Lectures are presented at a good speed. The humor and passion is appreciated!
The way the material is presented is very organized and laid out well. It is also helpful to have the examples explained or gone through in class. The assignments being similar to the examples help to solidify basics and understanding rather than create confusion or frustration.
Great professor. He keeps the class fun and helpful so you can learn everything in class.
Great going through examples in class. The jokes and random spanish words are brilliant
Well taught. The lectures are very effective mostly because of the profs enthusiasm.
Very useful lectures & assignments. Funny jokes I like this class!
Lectures are very interesting, entertaining and well structured. Abundance of online resources is awesome.
Detailed derivations, assignments are tailored towards learning what is being taught in class, written notes on blackboard rather than going through slides, very funny prof, overall awesome prof
Terry was an amazing teacher. He is so good looking and hard to keep your eyes off of but he is extremely fair and organized. He taught me so much and I recommend him for prospective students.
He was great up right up till the final. Fair quizzes, motivated teaching, and taught a lot of methods. His previous finals are known to be hard, but this final was absolutely ridiculous. His finals are a contender for Tony Yang. I had A+ right up to the final, and I'm almost certain I failed the final (and not even close to passing!).
Fantastic Professor, though his puns can be a little punishing. His jokes can be a little rocky, but do not take them for granite! Sometimes they are very bear-able! Jokes aside, easy quizzes, homicidal final. Best structural prof I've had by far at UBC.
Best structural prof I've had so far.
One of my favourite professors EVER. He is extremely funny while still effectively teaching the material. He answers all questions with enthusiasm. Amazing. Quizzes are not too hard, just do practice problems. Same with final.
I was lucky enough to take both 332 and 435 with Dr. Haukaas and can't say enough nice things about him. By far the best professor I had at UBC and it shows since he frequently wins teaching awards. Haukaas loves to test if you really understand the theory. His old exams were more of a time crunch than his most recent ones. Great dad style jokes.
CIVL 518 was the most enjoyable course during my graduate study. Prof. Haukaas gave the lecture by writing notes in details. Besides the written notes, the printed notes on his website had even more details and explanations which was a great help for us to understand the contents. The sections near the end were challenging and interesting.
If you're thinking of taking CIVL435 as an elective, save yourself a lot of grief and just don't! The class ave is low 70's. There's other electives where the class average is over 88% for half the amount of effort! You wont learn anything that is useful in CIVL435. If I had to do it again, I'd rather take 411, 433, 439 or 478 - stay away from 435!
Great Prof! Gave lots of examples, always made sure students were sufficiently prepared for homework and quizzes. Professor Haukaas did an amazing job of answering questions and explaining subject matter in multiple ways. The high attendance to his lectures shows how students appreciates his time.
Very inspirational prof, inspired me to not choose structural engineering for a career. Show up to class if you want to learn about his twitter account where he does daily tweets! Don't be late for an 8am class or you might have to wait 40 minutes to come in when he does a little break! Good luck!
He may be tough but hes one of the best profs in Civil 3rd year, and it shows from his high lecture attendance. Does examples in class, provides old quizzes on Connect, really tries to help you. Has a bit of an ego though
Yes this website used to be fun but what happened. It is a great course! Dr Haukaas lectures are awesome. He shows a real passion and understanding of the material. As well, its clear that he cares about the students and their performance. He wants everyone to succeed. Homework and quizs were heavy but fair.
ho. ho... hoh. I don't know what happened. Past years said he was great. This year he was condescending, militant, and generally unpleasant to be around. Lecture content is good - don't you dare be late for 8am, he'll pop a neck vein. Quizzes were often unfair, not related to lecture content, final was similarly full of curveballs. a bad time.
Condescending, unfair, and generally makes your day miserable. He is very demeaning and constantly reminds you he is much smarter than you. He encourages office hours but then doesnt show up himself. Questions in lecture are often "too simple" and he humiliates you in a lecture of 150 people. Good luck to the next years, I'll be sitting with you.
332 is a tough course ! But it is a course where I really learned a lot. Dr Haukaas is super picky about attendance and neat submissions. But lecture notes are very clear and organized. if you handle the strict rules then this is a great course.
best graduate course I have taken so far. very entertaining lectures. material was hard but tests were fair. waiting for the final grade hope it went well. Dr. Haukaas made a real effort and I hope he is considerate when marking the final
Grades are here! Went better then I was afraid of. Thanks for generous marking dr Haukaas! Learned a lot from your lectures. Respect the style despite strict rules.
Very punctual. Enthusiastic and makes the 3 hour lectures exciting. Writes on the iPad and projecting it is a good method of teaching. Better than just reading off of slides/online notes. Lots of notes online, lot of passion.
Did a good job in forcing us to learn the material (whether we like it or not). He spent a lot of time trying to develop students intuitions about the problems they are trying to solve, which at first seemed unorthodox, but really started to pay dividends afterwards. The course is tough but the more you put in, the more you get out.
He has real passion in teaching. Old quizzes really helped with studying. Did a good job explaining structural analysis and really helped students get comfortable with the concepts.
Overall, a great experience. Dr. Haukaas is an exceptional instructor. He is very inspiring in his teaching technique and I appreciate that he intermittently asked the class for feedback at multiple stages throughout the course. The halftime break in the lecture is really good.
One of the best professors in the Civil Department. Clear teaching, and answers questions both online and in class. Transitioned to online classes well. Professor Haukaas really cares about his students in this course, and he is passionate about the material.
He's not the nicest guy, but he is undoubtedly one of the best professors in 3rd year (that's not saying much though). His class is very difficult, but if you attend his lectures you will pass. Unfortunately he is super condescending (won't answer questions if he deems they are too simple) to students.
Prof Haukaas is the least understanding and most unkind professor Ive had. Unreasonable marking scheme - prepare for a 0 for slightly poor hand writing despite all correct method and answers. Lectures are alright.
Not only one of the rudest professors I have ever met, but also one of the rudest people I have ever met.
Extremely condescending and rude. Unreasonable marking scheme - gives marks of zero for small errors and refuses to answer questions regarding these marks. Enjoys threating to fail students when they "annoy" him.
Absolutely ruthless, only allowing 5 minutes to upload multiple PDF files for quizs. If your computer crashes? Too bad zero! Internet goes out zero! A few people I know emailed him there solutions and he basically laughed in their faces. Probably the least compassionate unreasonable professor I have ever met.
I am finding his lectures very helpful. It is good that Terje is strict. It is forcing not only myself, but everyone to have a sound knowledge of how to analyse structures.
His class is hard but he is a really good prof. If you are an average student like me, I would advice to ask as many questions as u need and go to office hours. This is because he likes his assignments and exams be done in his way. He will give you a 0 if you don't follow instructions and solve the questions the way he told you to.
Best prof in civil department , he cares about his students! The course is tough but if you put In the work you will pass. Hes not bad to look at either.
He is very strict and expects a lot from the students. He knows the content very well and is passiontate about what he teaches, but does not explain the nuances, which can make it difficult for people unfamiliar with the content to do really well. Not accomdating with marking and very a harsh grader.
I really wish he would record lectures. Dr. Haukaas is my favourite professor. Made himself very approachable and willing to help you understand during office hours. This was my favourite course of the semester. It has reinforced my interest in structural engineering and Dr. Haukaas' passion for the subject is infectious.
Dr. Haukaas has a good way to deliver the course content with iPad and projector. He has passion and definitely an amazing way of teaching. Good sense of humor and amazing TA.
Always prompt and updates the class in a reasonable manner to help the learning experience. Providing break times during class time is good, especially during a three hour lecture.
Great at lecturing and getting the point across. Very tough grader and tests.
God awful , tough to understand with all the stupid jokes he tried to do in class. Extremely condescending and not helpful. Material was okay but he made it so much more difficult to enjoy the course.
Prof. Haukaas did a good job making it clear what we were expected to know. The subject is complicated, but the professor's lectures and instructions are beneficial. We can ask as many questions as needed and go to office hours. Dr. Haukaas is my favourite professor.
Fun professor, with excellent teaching. For an 8am, he is able to retain my attention for the entire 1:30h, and explain complex and difficult concepts in a very easy-to-understand way. Although he gives 80% of the content through annotated slides, the other 20% is on the blackboard and it is vital for understanding the course so don't skip class.
imo one of the best professor in the faculty of civil engineering!
Dr. Haukaas has a passion teaching the fundamentals of structural analysis. He goes through the theory and many examples of the different topics. He gives out hints on the quizzes and assignments in class and is always open to any questions. The course work requires a lot of attention to detail and work. Class protocol and marking is strict.
I took this course 2 years back. Most students found him to be intimidating, and he has a big ego. As a person he's also very unforgiving, gave many students 0 for trivial reasons like bad handwriting. The final exam had a fail average below 50, and WE ONLY GOT OUR GRADES BACK AFTER 1 MONTH AFTER THE START OF TERM 2.
I love the Professor Terje TROLL that is posting all those Extra negative chirps. proper feud brewing when: I took this course 2 years back. still nurturing something. Great professor! love the videos!
I don't know who is calling out negative reviews as "TROLL". Frankly, the general concensus amongst students is that Haukaas is a difficult and condescending professor. There were NO VIDEOS ever given, so that student doesn't even know what they are talking about. Who even monitors someone's RMP? Serious you need to get a life.
Took Dr. Haukaas class 2 years back. For future structural engineers, this is an integral class. He really cares about his students learning, and is a fantastic lecturer. If you spend time on and understand the assignments you will do fine. He is a strict marker, be careful to follow instructions. Pay attention in class, he provides many hints.
Such a caring and humorous professor absolutely love him! Theory, examples, examples, examples! I appreciate the amount of examples and studying resources available online as well. Nearly the entire class showed up every tue/thur at 8AM.
The professor is incredibly knowledgeable and engaging, one of the best I've ever had. He brings great personality to lectures and is extremely passionate about structural analysis. I envy his ability to translate the course material and apply it to real structures. He is very joyful and supports students that are engaged and respond in class.
Communication with Terje is challenging. He often shuts down questions early, making it difficult to engage or seek clarification. His tone can come across as condescending, and interactions feel tense rather than open or supportive. Based on my experience, I would not recommend him as an instructor.
Engaging, lots of examples and explanations given in class, genuine interest in teaching, made sure everyone understood content by answering questions and making himself available for office hours. I felt supported throughout the semester. Professor Haukaas is an incredible teacher and sets every student up for success.
Completely unreasonable and very strict about following his EXACT convention. If you even do one thing different from how he would do it, regardless of if you get the right answer, you will lose at least 20% instantly. Has a huge ego. Course itself is pretty interesting.
Very strict about following his EXACT convention
Best Structures Prof.
Best lectures
Doesn't fully respect cantilevers.
You know what I mean. Is this the venue?
Are you kidding me? This is a good course.
agreed best prof in civil
Would love to see Haukaas vs. Tony Yang boxing fight! No negative signs allowed on diagrams!!!
Bending moment diagrams on the tension side. Clockwise shear is positive.
honestly best prof I had so far
see you next september lol
Lacks proper feedback on marked work and no clear grading expectations. In-class notes are hard to follow so get external help when you need it from peers.
Good Lectures but a bit all over the place. Great prof but a very tough grader. You need to know your stuff or you will fail.
