Terrell "Jake" Dionne is easily the best public speaking teacher at the university of Arkansas, so if you have to take this course, do yourself a favor and take him. If you have to take COMM 1313 or want to take a public speaking class, definitely take this one with Professor Dionne. The only homework you have is just actually writing the speeches you do. There are assignments due a few times a week, but it revolves almost entirely around the speeches we are giving in the class. He is not lineant on grading these speeches either. You have to impress him to get a good grade. There is no room for laziness or being uprepared. You need to be present, prepared, and creative in order to do well..

This was my first time taking Dr. Dionne's class I really liked him. He's very funny, caring, and active in and outside of class. The only complaints I would have is he is a pretty tough grader and isn't very quick at getting grades in. So, towards the end of the semester lots of assignments will be put in and it could change your grade

Was my first time taking one of Jake's classes and I loved him. He is very easy to talk to and to work with. My only complaints are that he is a tough grader and grades don't get put in super quickly, so your class grade could change completely in the last couple weeks of the semester! But if you show up, you will do well in his courses!!

I took corporate communication with Jake and he did such a great job. He forced me to think about the corporate world in a totally different way than I ever have. During this class, we read weekly scholarly articles and then we would take an open response quiz every Friday during class. We also wrote a 7-page paper at the beginning of the semester.

Was fantastic. I was dreading taking a public speaking class, but I am so happy I took it with Terrell. If you are worried like I had been to take a public speaking course, you should def take this class.

Dr. Dionne is one of the best professors I've had so far. Legal Comm is very interesting and with him you'll stay intrigued. I took this class to help satisfy my legal studies minor. His class isn't like typical legal courses, it focuses more on the forensic rhetoric behind the laws and Supreme Court cases. Extra credit, failing is hard= NO effort!

Dr. Dionne is a fantastic professor! He is animated, concise, and engaging. He doesn't ask too much of you, but also pushes you to grow and you learn a lot. The structure of the class allows you to have important conversations that you otherwise may not. If I had time before I graduate to take another one of his classes, I would!

This man is a legend! I liked how the class was based on a research paper. I am not a very warm person in general but he is so approachable. I feel safe, and I feel that I can talk to him as a peer. Unfortunately, I am no longer a Comm major but I hope I can take his classes as electives in the future.

Prof. Dionne is a very friendly man. It is apparent that he loves what he does and cares about his students. He encourages us to take new and unexpected directions and to keep him on his toes. My chief complaint is his use of norm-based grading, in which not every student can earn an A, even when following the rubric exactly.

Professor Dionne was by far my favorite professor I have had this semester and honestly so far at the University of Arkansas in general! He cared about each of his students more than any other teacher I have had in the college world and he would go above and beyond to make those personal connections with students.

Dr. Dionne is a good professor who challenges students. It isn't hard to get a good grade if you are willing to participate in class and give effort. If you are proactive, you can finish the graded work well before the semester ends. Dr. Dionne also offers extra credit for students who go above and beyond or want to improve their grades.

I didn't expect to enjoy this class because of the public speaking part of the class but I was extremely surprised. Jake wants you to be successful and he really cares about the class. He is truly the first professor at this university to act like he cares about his class.

His style is very active and hands on. As opposed to just having us sit in front of a board all day professor Dionne energize his students and gives us physical and involved activities that inspires students to think outside the box.

This class requires a lot of public speaking/speech giving, which is something I always felt uncomfortable with until now. Professor Dionne created an environment within the classroom that was extremely motivating for all students, and encouraged me to step out of my shell and believe in my abilities. I overall enjoyed this class. The only problem I had in the class was favoritism. He picks one-two students and favors them over everyone else. If you aren't one of those students, you'll probably just make average grades in the class. He expects above and beyond speeches to receive a 100. The class is fun, but wish he treated everyone the same.

Terrell Dionne is a very cool professor who will work with you and help you get the grade you need. This is a class where regular attendance is necessary, he will send the class an email on the days that we really actually have to show up.

The course work in this class isn't crazy hard, just similar to public speaking. One thing about Dr. Dionne is that he genuinely cares about his students and wants the best for them. At first his grading policy is rough, but by the end of the semester he becomes more forgiving. I would highly recommend this class!!!!

Professor Dionne is one of the best Communication teachers out there. He will make you work for your grade, but you will learn more from it. Dr. Dionne (Jake) is the first teacher who taught me how to write. He knows all sorts of formulas for writing lengthy research papers. He also has a network of students who are attending law school. He can connect you with them if you have questions about the application process. Love this man!

I have taken two of his classes and both were iconic to say the least. He teaches the material while maintaining a casual, light and fun atmosphere. I enjoy this class because there is no pressure. Yes there are assignments that must be completed but this is a class I can come to and almost decompress from whatever else I might have going on.

if you don't like public speaking, avoid argumentation and advocacy. but if you're pretty charismatic dr. dionne will eat you up, he loves people who are out of the box. there is a speech you'll do bi-weekly, and most will be group projects. besides that its just bi-weekly quizzes (also super easy).

Jake's classes aren't easy. In legal communication, we tackled a 20-page group paper, which was tough to coordinate before Thanksgiving. Thankfully, Jake is highly accessible and offers great feedback. I recommend him for anyone seeking a challenging, unique, and rewarding experience. He's also hilarious + dresses in color coordinated outfits.

Fun professor but his class is scary sometimes. You give lots of speeches and he judges your skills early on. If you don't get better, he will give you Ds. It's not easy, but it's not undoable either. Just be ready to work. I would take him again. I loved getting to know others in my class and feel like it was worth the $$$.

Be prepared to give speeches, they start immediately. This class is the best thing that's ever happened to me because the pace was perfect so that I didn't have enough time to panic about the next speech. This confidence public speaking has filtered over into all my other classes.

If you don't like publicly speaking this class will be a challenge for you. This class is basically entirely group projects as well, but that doesn't stop it from being a great class to take. If you're accountable, responsible, and the most borderline decent college student you'll be able to really enjoy this class and take good lessons from it.

One of my favorite professors I have had at. Keeps class engaging and fun while encouraging students to step outside their comfort zone. At some points in the semester, the Legal Comm class felt more like a theater course than a law-related course, but that's okay because I learned more practical skills here than I have in almost any other class.

Had trouble finding the right sources for my final paper. Instead of failing me, he gave me several extensions. Super available on email. Responds instantly and is always understanding. Attendance is mandatory and he doesn't allow self-reported absences on days with assignments (gotta get a doctor note). That's irritating but honestly makes sense.

Really happy and funny prof. Seems to love his job. He's nice to everyone even needy students. Wish id have started my final paper earlier he was demanding about meeting requirements. It was so much writing and I was sooooo tired. I plan on taking him again next year.

Jake is fantastic. For the important stuff: grades kindly, very expressive, little to no homework, you'll have fun in class and you will pass. My favorite thing about him is that he always has a genuine response to your comments in class, whether recommending media for you to learn from or demonstrating interest in you outside of the content.

Ive taken Jake several times. Legal comms is his most difficult class. It still isnt that difficult but theres a lot of work. We read a dozen things, completed two long presentations, and a big paper. Everything was accomplishable and mostly without homework but you still had to do the work. Hes easy going and his lectures are engaging.

Great teacher, participation matters in their class so make sure to show up and read the online materials. Unorthodox lectures and relies on class discussions from reading. Overall this class was engaging and no a crazy amount of work. Would recommend taking this class to anyone pre-law

Argumentation and advocacy was basically an advanced speech class. However Jake made it fun and memorable. Lots of group work! Make sure to show up to class!

I'm taking his Honors Environmental Law and Policy Forum and it's easily my favorite class! All he asks is for you to show up to class and participate and you're pretty much guaranteed an A. Each week he gives a reading that we talk about in class, but you can get away with just skimming it.

Professor Dionne makes class interactive and fun. As a class we all cultivated relationships with each other and our Professor because of the group speeches and the dynamic within the classroom. The assignments are basically just speeches. Everyone grew in their public speaking in skill and comfort.

Terrell (Goes by Jake) is an amazing professor. If you show up to class and give your best effort you will be rewarded for it. He connects with every student easily and in return everyone in the class does as well. Maybe 1 or 2 quizzes the entire semester that are very easy and if you do well on the speeches the midterm and final are not required.

Professor Dionne will push you hard but we definitely learned a ton. Overall its a hard class but its great and he wants you to succeed.

If you have the chance to take this course with him, I recommend you do it. Not only is attendance mandatory, but you also want to show up. Its one of the more fun classes I have taken.

Honors College Forum: Environmental Law and Policy was an amazing class! We had great discussions about environmental law, and I personally learned communication and debate skills that I would have had a hard time getting otherwise (I am an engineering major)!
