He's really not as bad as people claim. He's willing to change his methods for the benefit of the students. He's always willing to go the extra mile to help his students, simply ask. He know's what he's talking about and an overall good teacher.
he is Ok
He's really not bad. It's his first semester teaching. He's improved a lot from the beginning of the semester. He's nice and has a good sense of humor. I suggest you take him.
science course is not fun unless you are a nerd but he is a good teacher. He is strict but he is very nice if you see him in his office hours.
he is very fair when it comes to the final grade.
nice teacher - he will talk about anything related to science that you ask him in class and his tests are not that hard if you do the homework
Black is the best!!!
tests right from the HW. he is a nice guy if you follow his rules. I do not care about science but I got through my requirement with him pretty easy.
Back in Black! Rocks the chem dept! Where is everyone when the the weathers nice? pop quiz! Stars Wars! I dont know with the electrons rule but he is nice and not that hard.
He is the Best! really not a hard class, if you do the homework and ask questions in class he'll help until you understand. a Great New addition to NCC
Dr. Black is without a doubt one of the best professors I've ever had. In high school I did terrible in science including chemistry, but had us read and then go over in class the things we needed to learn so that I actually got it! Also a great person just in general that wants to help his students succeed. Take his class!
This guy is awful. Rude and can be very unprofessional, this is the first time he has taught chem 151 and i took this course in the summer. i do not at all recommend him. Hes harsh and expects you to memorize alot and just pick up on things that are difficult. DONT TAKE HIM.
This professor is ok. People this is college chemistry not sociology. You must expect it will be hard. He is tough but fair.
it was his first time teaching 151, hes very helpful and always there, make sure to read the textbook, gives numerous extracredit, there is no reason why you shouldnt get an A
He is awful and rude !!! Don't take his class !!!!!
Great guy! As long as you constantly stay on top of the material and make sure you always ask what you don't understand, you will do well. He is always there to help you and gives numerous extra credits. Sometimes explaining things using the chalk board would be more helpful but he teaches tough material well. He doesn't even kick his students :)
Great professor, really cared, came in when sick. Used his personal time to review with the class and teach in labs that weren't his so we could get more time with the material. Would explain things thoroughly until everyone understood. Dry sense of humor but actually very funny. Only weakness was his choice in professional hockey team.
Black was a great teacher. Even though hes a little new he was very open to helping and explaining whatever he could. I recommend reading the textbook and going for extra help since it is a hard class. But if you want to actually learn, hes a great teacher for that.
Great professor!! very helpful and definitely cares on how your doing! dont hesitate to ask if you dont understand he will go out of his time and way to make sure you do. Is very funny and like to give extra credit! do it because it will help!
Excellent professor, one of the best new additions to NCC. Highly recommended.
Great professor!
He is a great professor. Cares about his students and goes out of his way to help. Very knowledgable in his field and it shows.I suggest that you do the reading and don't skip the labs, and also attend the test reviews it helps.Recommend 100%
Dr. Black is an amazing professor, I was never good at science, but he goes over examples and offers extra help and because of his dedication to his students, I was able to do great in his class! If you have to take chem at NCC definitely go with Dr. Black, you won't regret it!
There's no way I would have passed chem if I had any other professor but with Black I got an A. He won't move on until you understand everything and will do a review before every test. He's so funny and such a great teacher, consider yourself lucky if you have him.
Dr. Black is a great professor that has great insight as well as making the class interesting. He is extremely understanding, very straight forward, and will to slow down the class for any student. He has a review before every test and is willing to help. Just go to class and you will do fine. I would highly suggest taking him!
Dr. Black is an excellent professor. His knowledge and understanding of Chemistry is inspiring and the way he is able to express this in class is most impressive. He is able to take a complex theory and make it easily understandable to students. He will not move on until the material is understood by all. His reviews are also not to be missed!
I did not like him at all, but feeling was mutual! He was nasty too me, & when I had a question in class he never called in me! Don't like him at all! But I'll admit he knows his stuff! And ask him to tell you his jokes there kinda funny lol!
good guy can answer any chem quest you give him, funny and can joke about being a geek i wished i had had him for the lecture section as well
Prof. Black is awesome !He is an excellent professor who wants to see his students do well. During class he makes sure everyone understands before he moves on, if not he will slow down. He is pretty funny... i would tell anyone to take him ....he really is great !
He was a great professor. He did plenty of examples in class to ensure we understood the material. You must show up to class because he goes through all the info with ,much detail. He was very helpful.
Dr. Black comes off a little rough around the edges on day one but turns out to be a really nice guy, just dont act like an idiot. I only had him for lab, very helpful and practically does the lab with you. Wish i had him for 151
Professor Black was great! He is my favorite professor at NCC. I was never great at chem but he was able to make me understand it so much better by his lecture slides, examples & tips. He was always there to answer any questions & really cared that his students understood each topic. I recommend him over any other chemistry professor!
Professor Black is the BEST professor I have had at NCC yet. In high school I was horrible at chemistry & he made it so much easier to understand when I had him last semester. His lectures are all slides that made difficult topics easy to grasp. Just show up to class/lab and you'll do great with his help- I recommend him!
Professor Black was an awesome professor. He was by far my favorite professor at NCC yet. I was terrible at chemistry in high school and I was so nervous to take it as a prereq for Molloy's nursing program. However, after taking the class he made chemistry so easy by using his slides, and giving many examples. I highly recommend this professor!
Prof Black was a great professor if you are interested in taking chem then hes the way to go! I did horrible in chem in high school so instead of jumping into 151 i took 107 to grasp the concept and it was a great choice. I'm so happy I took his course he was really ontop of making sure everyone understood the topics he and really helped everyone
Professor was great!! will explain things as many times as necessary as long as you read the textbook before coming to class. The labs are easy and interesting. His tests are very fair if you go to class and very similar to problems he goes over in class. Definitely take his class if you can!
T. Black was great. Awesome sense of humor, great taste in music, made material easy to digest. His examples helped make sense of the material and he made sure everyone understood before moving on. Full review before the test as long as you come armed with questions. Do the pre-labs. You wont regret taking his class. FUTURE SCIENTISTS OF AMERICA.
Favorite teacher ever. He is dyslexic like myself and he absolutely inspired me. Explains things really well and will answer your question even if it was asked thrice before.Does review sessions throughout semester. Really nice, good taste in music. Makes things relate able. get him for Chem 107
Awesome guy. As long as you do your pre labs and labs on time, and come prepared with your lab coat and goggles.. you will be fine. He also helped our class with lecture material too. He's also very friendly and can hold a conversation. Definitely recommend.
Cool guy. Not easy, but fair and I would take him again.
Dr. Black makes chemistry accessible & applicable to everyday life. Very approachable, passionate about teaching, quick to return emails, explains complex concepts in a relatable way. Use textbook to supplement class slides & notes. Tests are always fair & on exactly what he reviews in class. Makes class fun with dry humor & wit - TAKE HIS CLASS
He's a very good teacher who wants his students to do well. He keeps class interesting and will find additional ways of explaining anything you don't understand. He will spend whatever extra time you're willing to put in if you need help. The exams are fair and are only on the material he gets to in lecture, so show up to class.
He doesn't know how to teach, explain staff and his very rude. he will make you more confused after the lecture. if you have taken chemistry in High School then you might be ok otherwise dont take his class. I Thought myself chemistry i went to the Learning Center and i really got good help there. he gave me C+ which i deserved better then that. i also caculated my grades and it rounded up to B and he gave me C+ i dont know Why. DONT TAKE HIM other wise be ready to teach yourself a chemistry.
Gives great analogies to help give you a clearer understanding of concept.
black was a really good professor. he knew what he was talking about and wouldn't stop teaching unless you fully understood what he was teaching. he can be a little rude sometimes but all in all really good professor and he really loves what he does. defiantly take him if you have the change, wished he was teaching chem 151
I had Dr. Black for Lab. Very helpful not only for lab but lecture as well. Loves analogies, cares for his students and gives good advices. He set his rules, he wants respect. . If a student respect himself, does his assignment, pre. post lab, shows up in class prepared, and no plagiarism, you will get your A and he will acknowledge your effort.
If you listen in class, answer questions and ask questions when you don't understand, he will there for you to help. if you don't do that the class will not only be boring for you but it will be hard for him to help you. He tries his best to get the class interested in the material. Uses a lot of corny chemistry jokes but they are sort of funny.
Great professor overall. He's a cool guy who loves answering questions and will stay after class if you are having trouble with a topic. If you keep up with the textbook and participate in class, you will do well.
I had a great time in Dr. Black's and he inspired me to look further into a science I had previously been uncomfortable in. He explained topics clearly and gave a lot of examples and useful slides. He was late a few times but managed to cover all the material despite that.
Professor Black has sparked my interest in chemistry. So much so that I'm thinking of changing my major from bio to biochem... Also, he's a fellow Built to Spill fan and that's awesome. Overall great professor and could not have explained things any better... Take his class!!!!! Also, participate; he is more than willing to help once he knows you.
He was a great professor. He was my lab professor, but he also helped us to explain some problems we faced during our lecture class. He also allowed us to take the lab homework home to finish. However, he was very serious about the attendance. Once you are late more than 10 minutes, you don't have to participate the rest of the class.
He maybe a great professor during the regular school semester but during the summer session he was late daily. He missed 2 classes and 2 labs. He wouldn't answer questions in review of tests that he "liked" He didn't return labs on time the last half I never received back. He as far as I'm concerned favored younger and science majored students.
Pay attention and you will do great, he loves when you participate and he is clear of what he wants. He really focuses on the math part of Chemistry and if you aren't that great in math he will help you through it. Hey im dyslexic and suck at math but I got a B+ in the class. He's really great and he cares.
Good Professor. One has to be serious about the class. Class participation matters. If you've never taken chemistry before, make sure you go to the helping center and practice problems. In this way, you'll be good with the material and tests would not seem hard at all. For the first two tests, textbook is a little necessary. Good Luck. :)
Excellent Professor. Took a topic which can be pretty dry and metaphor'ed the crap out of it, to relate to his students. If you understand the concepts, you are golden as he really only asks basic questions on the exam.
Professor Black wants his students to do well and understand the information. That being said, he is not giving anyone a free pass. Grading criteria is clear and he won't move on until you understand a topic, so ask questions the first time. Professor Black uses metaphors that everyone can understand to help students understand topics. Often late.
Dr. Black was one of my fav teachers ever. Class was entertaining & the topics were explained in a clear cut manner. He had a great ability to relate novel topics to pop culture, which is a gift - especially in a course like Chem. He's not an easy A, but if you review what he goes over in class, you will be fine. Disregard the bitter reviews.
I need everyone to be absolutely positively honest while rating professors because what I read is a complete lie. This professor is disrespectful, sarcastic and unhelpful. He expects you to know Chem even if youve never taken the class. All he talks about is sports, food and nonsense. Money doesn't grow on trees do not waste what you have with him.
Chemistry is hard, most of the department doesn't make it any easier. Whether you had a choice or didn't, be happy you got Dr. Black. Perks include: office hours, slides, knowledge, and good humor.
Great Professor! I wish I could've done better but it's my fault. Still would take him again anytime! Laid back and tests are not hard but you got to study.
Not my favorite but he was very intellectual in his lessons. Not such a great professor but eventually got the hang of it. Study, i definitely suggest to study in groups. His reviews honestly weren't helpful, you must participate no matter what! At times boring but if you focus you'll do fine, the final was easy probably moved from D to a C+
Let me start off by, this guy is hilarious! He's very sarcasticly hilarious so if he comes for you and you have a low tolerance you can just forget it.. also don't let him fool you into thinking there's some rule that you cannot be 10 min late to class.. he's the only prof that says that so be late twice to lab bf you can also forgetit Good luck !
Great professor. Make sure you actually come to class, won't let attendance slide. Loves making funny analogies to chemistry. Very intellectual about the subject so ask anything and he will give a direct answer with examples to back it up. READ THE TEXTBOOK AND STUDY. Willing to help his students if they need it and show they're committed.
Prof Black is a genuinely great prof knows his stuff and makes it so that it is easy to understand with corny jokes! Take advantage of office hours he is willing to go over what you don't understand and help you to understand! Labs are fun and hes there to guide you chem overall isn't that bad! Prof black makes it more enjoyable!
Very funny, yet serious when necessary. Professor Black is an awesome professor. Very informative and makes learning chemistry much easier than most. Tell him "Tennis Ball" recommended him to you and he'll laugh.
Dr. Black truly cares about his students and the lessons he teaches. He is patient and makes time for you if you find the topic difficult. He will roast any student foolish enough to try and bust his chops, come ready to focus on your work. No cell phones/side conversations tolerated. Great professor, wise, compassionate, wants to see you succeed
I took Professor Black for the Lab section only of Chem 131. He was always willing to go over any questions we had about the lecture/homework who we took with a diff. professor and was great at breaking concepts down to explain. If you do the lab you get full credit. He truly cares about his students and helping you get the best grade you can
One of my favorite professors I've taken!! Very very clear while teaching, gives great ways to help you understand better. Very caring and always wants to make sure you understand the topic before moving on. And he has some funny chemistry jokes. If you have the chance, TAKE HIM!
He wasnt boring.
Funny guy. Not an easy A, but has a cool way of teaching and definitely knows his stuff. Practice and stay engaged and you'll be just fine.
Prof Black truly cares about his students, especially those who show interest. You will need to read the textbook especially in the beginning of the semester, its the foundation to it all. He will spend extra time going over concepts. If you do not express that you dont understand he will move on. Those who didnt do well, didnt study or ask que
PROF. BLACK initially comes off as a little abrasive, however he wants students to do well. He goes over concepts repeatedly which helps ALOT. It would make it easier for students to READ the text. He wants to see you are studying. His tests are fair. Complete the labs and you'll be fine. Don't skip class!
I love Dr. Black and learned so much in his class. Please read the textbook and particulate. Straight forward exams. Plus he wont move on until you get it
Honestly, he is very mean and sarcastic. Very wordy with explanations and can be discouraging to people if they don't understand concepts. If you enroll to his class, do your assignments and prove him wrong. Go to Chemlab and look at the textbook, and you'll be fine.
He's one of the kindest professors I've had. He wants students to really understand topics and will go at the class's pace. Everything you practice in class will be on the test, it is very clear on what to study. He likes to know each student's names which lets him become closer to his class. I really enjoyed being in his class.
Professor Black can be nice enough, don't get me wrong. However, those times are usually few and far between. He spends FAR more time on analogies with many topics (London Dispersion forces) instead of truly explaining. And to top it off, he can be VERY dismissive at times. Additionally, don't expect him to write back to you if you email him.
Lazy professor. Puts minimal effort in teaching probably cause this course is too easy/redundant for his level of expertise. Always late with poor excuses. Hard to reach. Overall this prof is the worst to introduce someone to the world of chemistry, may actually deter students from pursuing their interest in Chem.
Dont recommend. Hes late. Hes condescending and rude. He refuses to email. Wont allow recording of class. He doesnt teach. You read the book and ask if you have questions but he doesnt "teach" the material. If you ask to explain the material he gives abstract examples that leave you more confused. If you are new to chemistry, he will turn you off
All of the exams given were one question points heavy and made it very hard for you to pass an exam of his. He will explain concepts over again but that's it failed. Every exam leading me to withdraw in early December. Chemistry is hard enough and his teaching methods are far from helpful for remote learning. He also had no office hours.
Very hard to learn the material, It was difficult to gauge what was going to be on exam because he told us to read 10 chapters to prepare without a review sheet to guide us . Very hard to reach and often leaves me confused after class
One of my first remote classes I had to take and I found Prof. Black to be extremely helpful. He really did his best to explain all the material in the simplest terms for students to understand. You do have to read and put in a good amount of work but he emphasizes everything that will be on the exam and goes over all challenging problems in depth
If he tells you, you need to take HIS evaluation that he created and posted in blackboard or you wont get your grade, that is a lie.. I contacted the dean of students. They never heard of that and said he cant do that.. So dont feel you have to give him a good rating or you wont get your grade.
Look, he's a good teacher! I'd take him again. He is a fair grader and does his job. No complaints about his teaching style. BUT he's absolutely condescending and sarcastic. Borderline rude. He's like Sheldon Cooper. He's that "really smart guy that only relates to other really smart people" type of personality. Don't take his attitude personally.
Highly intelligent in chemistry. Read the textbook, he makes it very clear. Kind person as well
Prof Black is a good teacher. He's well experienced and knowledgable of what he's teaching. The only thing is, that he randomly cancels class or has a sub without telling us. His tests are fair and abt the material we learned. He makes sure you ask questions so he can try to help his students and doesn't make them feel bad about not knowing.
He says you need to read the textbook to pass. I personally didn't and I've been getting 90+ on my tests. He wants to make sure you not only know the answer but understand it as well. The class before the test is review but he won't do examples, he expects the students to lead it by asking him questions. All in all, he's a pretty good professor
I have a lot to say. This might be in two reviews. First of all hes very knowledgable in chemistry. That cant be denied. He's accessible by email for the most part. And he teaches well. What I dont like is that he lied about our final. Said it would be a mash up essentially of all our previous exams and it wasnt...
Prof. Black is a great professor, he explains lectures in ways that anyone could understand and really breaks down everything so that rather than memorizing something you actually understand it. You totally cannot miss a class though, every lecture is different and essential for the exams so you'll fall behind if you don't show up for even one day.
Professor Black is a very good teacher & wants you to learn in his class. Class is hard & is all math. He didn't lecture, he taught & reviewed last topic at the next class. He was very fair & told you what would be on the exam by the way he teaches. He expects you to read the text book and be ready for new material each class.
unprofessional: 1.slim with honesty; forgetful 2. No recordings allowed- said person will personally record the class. 3. Mentions sending something via email- typically done late 4. Misses multiple classes 5. presents material as hard
If you are need to Chem please do not take this professor. He doesn't explain the material thoroughly and we often have to teach ourselves. If you ask for help he often goes a way of belittling you. There is no hw or extra credit. He spends classes on analogies that doesn't correlate to material. You are better off with another professor.
Prof. Black for lecture and lab are two completely different people. For lab he was amazing. If we didn't understand something in lecture he would kindly go over it. We were often excused over an hour early from lab as long as we completed some of it. Just make sure you follow lab procedures very closely and that your data makes sense.
Class was in the evenings 8-10pm 4 days a week 1 month long, very intense, and AMAZING lecture! He made the dread materials fun by associating concept with everyday analogies, a lot are food related, and yay, why not?! This whole course was the opposite of boring. and the concept and skills we required from this course will last us a long way.
This professor was just ok. The tests were not difficult, however test questions were not written well, had many typos, and selected many answers that were ultimately not true. Professor Black also held a personal grudge against the entire class, because of the actions of one anonymous student. Not the worst professor, but Nassau has better.
Tough class but the professor helped alot
The professor is very helpful. You're expected to read the book and ask questions during lecture. Doing this will help you get a good grade and better understanding during lecture. Attendance for labs is mandatory and must always be prepared.
Professor Black has a unique teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class can be rewarding. Unstuck Study AI and the free textbook are great study aids alongside attending lectures.
Professor Black clearly knows Chemistry and that is sincerely noted, but other than that, I've found working with him to be an uphill battle. Any type of questions asked he sees an issue with. Professor Black picks favorites in the class and makes that outwardly known. Please try to find another professor if possible.
he definitely knows chemistry and wants you to understand. he's patient in making sure you understand the material. participate matters. show up to class and make sure you're on time! he does give online labs that i found more difficult than the ones in person. he's a good professor overall.
Hi to whoever reads this review Professor Black is a horrible teacher and will pick favorites in the class no matter what. I had to withdraw from the class because his tests are hard. The only thing that i liked about his class are the labs which are very helpful and hands on. His lectures are really boring and hard to pay attention in.
I had this professor for summer CHE132 lab and honestly if I had him for lecture I probably would cry lol. Thankfully for us, he was out for leave half the summer session and we had Professor Susan Wenz (who was amazing). He is strict & no nonsense but he KNOWS HIS STUFF. He took the time to go over material he knew we were confused on from lecture
If you study the material and do practice problems, you'll pass. Don't be afraid to ask questions, even if they seem stupid. His exams are straightforward, no trick questions. However, the class is 80% exams and 20% labs. Nevertheless, he made chemistry likable. He's amazing; he even wrote my letter of rec, and now I'm attending Stony Brook.
Really good professor. He is super nice and explains things in a way that actually makes sense. His exams are fair and based on what he teaches in class, so as long as you pay attention and keep up with the textbook, you will be fine. He makes chemistry feel less stressful and even fun at times. I would definitely recommend taking his class.
