-always nice and willing to explain any questions - very difficult to know what she wanted from an assignment -tough marker ( neglects to mention things she's looking for until after assignment was marked, her tests are very specific to things she briefly mentioned in class) - only taught MLA and not APA in 'writing for academic success' course
This class is very hard for a first year GNED, grading is very tough and instructions are vague, at best. Terri is open to complaints and questions so you have to be willing to go talk to her in order to do well in her course. She's not unreasonable but it is extremely difficult to know what is expected of you from each assignment
Terri was a very confusing and disorganized professor. To be fair, some of her lectures were interesting but sometimes it did not go with the course topic. Terri treated this class (GNED 1201) as an english course, she HEAVILY scrutinized our english as opposed to our ideas; I wouldnt mind this if it was an actual english class. VERY READING HEAVY!
Honestly the most unorganized and unstructured class I've had in my 3 years of university. Material taught was very dry and terri marks harder than she should be for a course like this. Too much reading and the reading was also not legible making it hard to prep for class. Avoid this professor!!!!
Terri is a good professor. Her marking is fair and the assignments are relatively simple. Time consuming, but still simple. I had initially misjudged her as intimidating but that is not the case. She is a really sweet woman with a extensive knowledge. I enjoy that she centers the course along your interpretation of art. I would recommend Terri :)
If you are considering Terri for GNED 1404 and you're a first year with no university-level English experience - DON'T. She marks insanely hard for what she's teaching, her expectations are unrealistic. Go with literally any other 1404 course, not hers. She is disorganized as well. Pretty hypocritical of her. I'd drop her class if I could.
She marks really hard and expects the world from everyone, regardless of it being a first year class. Run away, Get out if you can!
Brutally hard for a foundation GNED. Literally told the class one day she doesn't give out A's, only a few B's, mostly C's and some D's. Way too much work for a GNED, and the class average is around 60. Marking is not even close to being fair, seems like her goal is to give everyone a bad grade.
Terrible prof. Worst I ever had. Impossible grader, and gives next to zero help or advice. Strongly advise everyone not to take her classes.
Bad. Assigned tons of reading & sometimes no work was assigned to it because it was discussed in class. Disorganized. Expects A LOT for a GNED1401. A LOT of essays. Very hard marker. Helpful information was only given out the day before an essay was due. Dry material that she makes students hate even more.
Baker might be a friendly teacher but at all costs, don't take it with her. The class is extremely difficult with tons of homework where she gives little info on writing success. It is very exhausting for a GNED course. Also, if you're a guy, you'll be extremely uncomfortable in the class. It's more of a feminism class and less of a writing class.
Terrible teacher. Marks way too hard for a GNED. Worst teacher I've ever had
It was difficult being a first year student taking this class. Dr. Baker assigned way too much reading for a GNED. She grades way too hard for the amount of writing techniques she actually teaches. The only reason to take this class with her is if you're more interested in reading about feminism for a semester rather than learning how to write.
Tough but fair. Every assignment I received a higher grade than the last; found her feedback to be helpful. I found the assignments to be helpful in my other courses as well. Definitely an English focused course, requires a bit of work, but I found I learned a lot. She loves in class participation.
Don't take this course with Terri if you are not already a strong writer. Heavy workload for a GNED and she is a tough grader. Get ready to read about feminist topics.
The worst prof Ive ever had. She expects way to much for a GNED
I'm sure she means well however she's a tough marker and her assignments are tough. If you struggle with grammar do not take her class. She will drop your mark down to a C- from a few errors in your writing, not fully taking into account how good your ideas were.
Difficult professor. Very tough grader. Treats this course not as a GNED but as a English course. Does NOT tell you what will be on exams and does NOT give enough time for large and heavily weighted writing assignments or projects.
I took her class for my GNED 1404, and it was the worst experience I ever had. She expects you to know everything. If your are not good in English, especially grammar, I would highly recommend not taking her, but she is a nice person and willing to help you out if needed.
My favourite course of the semester. The course material was on the heavier side, but the class was incredibly interesting. I didn't know gen-eds could be this fun!
I took her class, writing for academic success and she doesn't really teach you anything about writing. Its like shes there to just tell you about what you need to read and tell you about assignments.
Terri is one of the best and nicest prof yet. She is a tough grader; however, always is willing to help. Very minimal homework. ! research essay, 2 small quizzes with redos and 3 group assignments, a midterm and final. Very easy class if you put in the work.
Terri's a great prof. Her feedback, while sometimes very specific and almost nitpicky, was very helpful for writing essays. The group work was awesome and I loved working with my group mates. There's also plenty of interesting material in her lectures so do attend her classes.
Terrible at communicating what she wants from students and taught me next to nothing about writing. I do not recommend taking any of her classes. The content is also about as dry as it could get.
Terri is organized and a consistent prof. I don't feel that i received helpful insight on how to write better. Her expectations for writing are very high and does not give the tools to learn to write to her standard. Nonetheless, if u attend and participate she will give you that recognition. Side note: She makes it very easy to want to participate
I took this class as my elective. The least I've ever received on any paper has been a B, but in her class I've received nothing but C+. Her essay prompts are not thought provoking and she stumbles over her own writing. She is a nice person, but she grades too harsh. If you want to keep your gpa I do not recommend her course.
I'll be honest, Terri Baker was the worst prof I've ever had in my four years of university. She's hands down the hardest grader I've ever encountered. AVOID HER LIKE THE PLAGUE! I took this class because it sounded cool and interesting: Comics as Literature. It would be a fun class if she wasn't teaching it. HUGE GPA dropper.
I have been an A student my entire life, especially with essay writing. I have received two C+ grades on essays from Terri so far (3 weeks left in semester). I have never received a C on anything in my life. She gives no feedback that makes sense, and doesnt seem to understand her own assignments. This course is destroying my academic profile.
Judging from the past reviews I was terrified to take her class but she actually wasn't awful. She was really nice and if you need help she is more than willing to help. She is a tough grader though but aside from her marking, she is a very nice caring prof.
So glad I took this class! my writing improved greatly. Terri Baker is a very nice and intelligent Prof, her expectations are quite high. So, she tries to get the best out of you. She rewards improvement and hard work. She is very accessible and helpful, but you must put in the work.
The issue I find with her is that she will grade first and teach after. We had to submit an MLA outline with proper citation, otherwise pretty basic and no mention of a thesis; that's to say, no complex paragraph-by-paragraph outline. After she graded us, she told several of us that we got a C for not writing out our entire thesis sentence(s).
Avoid if you can. She literally explains everything after the assignment has been graded and then ponders why students are agetting Cs and Ds. she does not let us know about her expectations and when we dont meet them she gives a C . shes a great person but not a good prof for an intro class.
It goes like this: Expect to write on average 1 essay per week. On top of that, you don't really have an outline for it because what she says is completely different. The due dates are always wrong as well because she doesn't change them from semester to semester. Finally, ignore most of the feedback because it's all vague and questionable.
Just ignore any assignment outline she gives you. She will make impromptu changes in the class but will not adjust the actual outline. That makes it difficult because you always have at least 2 assignments always on the go that she is constantly adjusting, and gives you grief when you miss something she briefly mentions for 30 seconds in class.
Dr. Baker was extremely unclear of expectations in regards to assignments and papers. Her rubrics and outlines say one thing, and if you follow that, she will without a doubt give you a bad grade. When approached she gives no details as to why you are not succeeding, it seems like she believes an "A" student doesn't exist. Avoid at all costs.
Very kind and caring, and wants her students to improve. Very approachable. Definitely a harder marker, as she seems to have a very specific idea of what she wants your essay to look like. Learned so much from this course. But the due dates were disorganized and mixed up often, which was frustrating. Overall not bad :)
Terri Baker is a kind and understanding person, however, she sets her standards and expectations for students waaay to high for anyone to reach. She once gave me a suggestion for my thesis for one of my essay outlines, which I ended up using, but when I got back my essay, she told me that my thesis was too broad.
Terri is by far one of the best profs I have had at MRU, if you have the opportunity take this class with her. The workload is not hard at all, very manageabl. She provides amazing feedback that you can keep learning from. She will go out of her way to help you and help to extend deadlines. There are 2 essays, a quiz, midterm quiz and essay, final
Terri really knows her stuff, she's just terrible at teaching. I really love going to MRU, every other professor knows how to teach and they really care about student success. Terri doesn't like promising students and can get really aggressive if you ask for help. I went from excitement to absolute dread going to her classes. Bad energy.
Hardest prof ever. Gives feedback but marks it wrong when you follow it.
Terri is by far one of the worst profs Ive ever had. She provides outlines and criteria for assignments and when you follow them she gives you a bad mark for being unclear. She changes marks after they have been graded to make questions worth less that were originally worth more making your mark lower.
Terri is a great person but her teaching is the worst I have ever seen. She gives outlines to assignments and then answers any questions about them a day or two before it is due. She changes her grading criteria days before the assignments due. And when you follow the exact criteria for the outline she gives she hits you with a C. Very unclear.
She is a decent person, however she is not clear with what she wants from you when you are doing an assignment, and when you take the feedback she has given you and use it in your next assignment is seems to be not good enough, even with following exactly what she has said, she is a very tough marker. I will be avoiding a class with her again.
Terri is an impossible marker. Along with extremely vague instruction on assignments she marks with high expectation. She is also very unaccessible outside of class, taking long times to respond/not responding at all, making it hard to get clarification on material you're confused with because of her own instruction.
I had Terri during the COVID-19 lockdown online for the Winter Semester. She is a very kind and funny person, however she is unclear of her grading criteria, marks papers and tells you what she wants. However, if you do what she asks she still says its wrong. Honestly one of the hardest Profs I ever had, and will not be taking classes with her.
I had Terri during Covid fall, she was terrible! Vague with instructions, does not give feedback, nor does she help when you ask questions. A terrible teacher does not care for her students. Avoid at all costs
Reading these reviews before signing up for the class almost made me want to avoid taking the class. It was a requirement for me and she was the only prof available so I took it anyway. She was not bad at all. Fair marker, gives good feedback on how to improve. Can be a bit vague at times but is always available for extra help if you ask.
Terri was so caring and overall such a kind person. She is definitely a hard marker, but she cares about her students success and wants to see you do well. It is evident she is good at what she does, and she replies quickly to emails and is always ready to help if it is needed. Her hard marking, make me work harder and become a better writer.
Terri is really good professor but. shes the hardest prof I ever had. She marks everything really hard and barely gives any feedback. If you in open studies dont take any course with her your gpa will go down for sure..
One of the hardest markers I have had in my life. Hard marker for a GNED course. She is kind and will reply to emails pretty quick.
I really like Terri as a person. She is actually very kind and really tries to engage the class. However, as a professor? She is such a hard marker. She'd probably critique this review and give it a D. This is a first year course on COMICS. Is it not up to our interpretation what the images mean to us? Nope guess not. She gives vague feedback too.
She is a nice person, but as a Professor just awful , she is very disorganized and will change her mind on criteria up to the due date. When taking her feedback and putting what she suggests to your next assignment she will say you did it wrong, which was also frustrating. Her class was just not a good experience.
Terri Baker is one of the worst Profs I have ever had. She gives you the essay prompts, and then tells you that you are completely wrong and it isnt what she wanted when the essay is said and done. She frequently changes the guidelines and due dates without telling and is the worst for communication. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER. Its ruins GPA
Terri might be a great professor outside of the online setting, however she sucked for online classes. Her marking was unfairly hard and it was either her way or no way. She does give feedback they were like her instructions rather vague. The lectures and readings were dry. For a second year class the expectations were unreasonably high.
I don't even know where to start with Terri, even though she is a nice lady, as an educator she is horrendous. The way she marks and gives feedback it feels almost impossible to do well in her class. Even when you reach out to her, she is not very helpful, and even after will change things in the criteria on a whim. I would suggest avoiding her.
Lots of small readings that are not necessary for exams. Tests directly off of an expensive text book. Work heavy, four journals, quizzes, and three papers (one research). Honestly if you take the opportunities given to receive feedback, and focus on a few key grammar points, you will succeed. She is kind, will help you succeed if you let her.
Terri is by far one of the worst profs I've had when it comes to teaching material. She is extremely vague and unclear on assignment instruction and she constantly changes due dates and assignment criteria days before it is due. She explains her guidelines for an assignment and even when followed step she will give you a bad grade Most unclear prof
I should've listened to the other reviews. I'm a straight A student, yet I was clinging to an A- in this class after putting in more effort than all of my nursing courses. I decided to drop it and retake it in spring because the effort required wasn't worth the stress. She is the hardest marker I've ever had. Don't take her class. Very nice though
The hardest marker I have ever come across in university. Would not recommend her as your professor.
Terri is a super sweet prof BUT, she does not give feedback on the essays that you write nor does she give examples of what she is expecting. She does not give a grading rubric and most people couldn't get above a B on her essays. I would not take this class again and by the end of the semester only 3 people would show up to class.
The hardest marker I've ever had. I never get anything less than an A- in essays but I was given a C in my first one. She does not have a grading rubric and gives very unhelpful feedback. Keeps changing the due dates the day before. Took off marks for a statement she believed was wrong and refused to change it when presented with the evidence.
She's by far one of the worst english teachers i've ever had in my life. To start with, only one assignment had a clear rubric. Terri marks within her own bias, meaning even if you're right about a marking error she's gonna double down / take offence. It seems like Terri just assumes what a students total grade should be after their first essay.
Will tell everyone to stay away from this Prof. Refuses to provide feedback on essays before submitting and after submitting will give you unclear and horrible feedback. Impossible to get better than a C in this class. Worst marker and no clear rubric. Only class that I struggle with even being a strong analytical writer.
After reading the reviews I will admit I am a little confused. Terri is extremely nice and very approachable. I do think her expectations could be laid out clearer because she is a tough grader but I have learned a lot from her since my initial C. She taught some really interesting content and was always available for help. Heavy reading required.
This was the hardest class to pass. It seems as if after the first essay Terri decides where your grade is going to be the whole semester. It's very hard to pay attention in lectures and the readings are ridiculously boring. Even with her slight attempt at giving feedback it never helps any of your writing skills. Would not recommend to a friend
Terri is a very nice and caring person, and she included a lot of content in her lectures that is applicable to life, such as inspiring Ted Talks. I enjoy that type of content, however it didn't have much to do with technical writing. There were many ironic cases of spelling mistakes in the slides even though it was a technical writing course.
ENGL 2207. Great prof! Idk why Terri is getting such bad ratings. Her expectations are clear and she gives useful feedback. There were LOT of readings but we weren't tested on them. Didn't get much out of the lectures. She's approachable, responsive to emails, and eager to provide help/discuss material.
An amazing teacher! Perhaps the best I have had. The class is heavy with readings but the feedback and tips she gave went a long way. Our blackboard was so well organized and each class was recorded incase you miss. Not only an amazing reacher but an amazing person. The things I learned from this class has helped me in all my other courses.
Terri is a nice person, but is a very hard marker. Her feedback is also confusing because I went to use her feedback for my next assignment and she stated that it wasn't right again. Just frustrating over all.
Feedback was provided as well as examples of how to improve on grammar skills covered in class, however the feedback was addressing maybe 1-2 mistakes throughout a 4 page essay, somewhat unorganized and mistakenly marked some assignments as un-submitted and I had to contact her to get it changed. Only thing I learned was grammar is hard.
I sold my papers that she couldn't recognize for millions, and all I got in return was a high school drop out decreasing my GPA for religious social event. I mean, could I at least, have had Jesus wipe my ass while they were both at it?
Terri is super passionate about the content, but her class feels very disorganized and scattered. The feedback provided isn't overly helpful or descriptive. For an introduction class to the art of story, she focuses on a single genre of gothic rather than diving into different genres and styles of writing which was not the course description.
Terri Baker is the worst prof at Mount Royal, no one can beat her. Her marking is insane, you could be an A/B student for writing in other classes but with her get ready to get C+ at most. Do not take any class with her unless you want C's. She acts all sweet but truly is not and her feedback is not useful. You'll get a lower mark if you follow it.
Not a good option. She was a really tough marker, didn't have a course syllabus, and it was pretty tough trying to figure out what was needed for the next class.
There is an insane amount of reading for this course. Would avoid taking especially if you are a first-year student. Terri as a person is wonderful and caring, but gives useless feedback and is a very tough grader. Although I enjoyed some readings, the workload for this course is VERY heavy. Class attendance is mandatory for sure.
Dr.Baker is amazing and her class discussions were interesting. But it's not a GPA booster, I'd recommend her if you know you'd work hard. Her grading system isn't illogical. I got a C at first but after using her feedback I got a much higher grade, the highest I've gotten from her was an A so I don't think she grades based on the first impression
Very tough on specifics and there was not a lot of opportunities to improve... was graded upon 3 assignments and 2 quizzes and difficult final exam.
Terri can be a "tough marker" but I honestly think she was very fair. This is a university level writing course, hence the title "Writing for Academic Success", so I think people are upset they weren't marked easier despite not producing university level work. She tries to keep us engaged and makes the class as interesting as the content allows.
talks a lot during her lectures. Must do the readings or else youll just be confused in class. Be prepared to deal with a very messy D2L as well. Overall her course is very boring and easy to be distracted
Doesn't provide helpful feedback, and is a harsh marker.
If you can, take ANY OTHER PROFESSOR other than Terri. She was an extremely unfair marker when it comes to the essays, and will automatically doc points and marks if your views do not align with her perspective. She expects you to write the essays based on her beliefs towards the literature. Her lectures are non engaging and you WILL fall asleep...
She spent the entire semester giving vague lectures just to fail everyones essays.
The lectures are dry and boring, D2L is very messy.I did not really understand how to improve my essay and the quizzes because her feedbacks are base on her opinion.
Worse professor ever. You cannot improve even taking into consideration about the vague feedbacks she gives. You will receive a terrible grade or fail for no reason.
She is a tough grader and the lectures aren't very exciting but she is also an understanding and kind prof that gives some of the best essay feedback I have ever gotten.
You get a lot of grades you do not deserve especially when you followed the guidelines/rubric, readings, and her desired formatting for the papers. I do not recommend taking any classes with this professor as you will not learn much and just end up getting a poor grade even when you follow the readings and put in the work.
The lectures were super boring and hard to sit through. She gives minimal feedback that isn't very helpful and even if you take her feedback you won't get a better grade on future assignments. She marks super hard and unfairly and your grade is essentially based on how much she likes you as opposed to how well you do.
Terri is a lovely teacher, but I do understand where other more negative reviews are coming from. Her feedback on assignments did feel vague, and I can tell that those who aren't already strong writers may not build the skills they were hoping to in her class. Most writing topics for this class were focused on feminism, as others have mentioned.
DROP this course, worse prof MRU has. TAKE the reviews very serious. Not worth taking this course. Nit a clear course outline, messy D2L. MOST About 60 percent of the class withdrew from her course. This says it all. It is like she loves to fail students. No solid feedback, when you ask, try to improve your grade does not improve.
If you read the required material, this is not a difficult class. I found that she had a genuine passion for the readings and was interested in our interpretations, which I appreciated. In lecture, she taught me how to find the deeper layers in my analyses, and I have used her feedback, with success, for assignments in other courses.
Genuinely one of the worst profs I have ever had. Her feedback is very vague and negative and her outlines for assignments are so vague that you have no idea what to do. Her lectures are boring and her slides always have spelling and grammar errors but she berates students for these same mistakes. Horrible!
Terri Baker was not consistent with her grading. Attendance is mandatory in order to receive a decent grade. I would not recommend taking a class with her. I did end up with an A in her class but it was very challenging especially for a year one class.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS (x3).. Her outline is a total mess, unorganized and errors. Her feedback during the course of grading is the worse thing i've came accross in my entire 4years in the school. Her feedback was like she reminding me how i missed 40% of her class and not an intelectual response to what could be done to improve my paper. "B```h"
find a different prof for engl 1151, I have done good in other university level essays but with Terri every essay I wrote would get a worse mark than the one before, but all her feedback says is "overall well done" with a B- or C+ essay worth 25% of grade...and she is hard to reach outside of class time. Lectures were also kind of useless
Do not take this course, or any course with Professor Baker, if you can avoid it! She doesn't give any feedback unless you ask and even then it is very vague. She also doesn't explain what she wants on quizzes or essays, she may give you a checklist but the things she grades on are opposites. This class is not a GPA booster by any means!
This professor is terrible at giving positive feedback, and refuses to help you get better. if she doesn't like you she will give you a bad mark. Not too much work, but the work is heavily weighted and marked based on how well your work relates to the said subject, so if it doesn't expect a bad grade.
Legit the worst teacher I have had. If you can avoid her do it. Craziest marker I've ever had, the workload was insane for how little she actually taught in class. Dry and boring and doesn't engage the students at all. Honestly just overall awful
Definitely a more difficult class, but she is there to help you all the way! Participate in discussions, pay attention to the material, and do your readings, and you will do just fine! She is always open and available to help you out and give you feedback, especially when you feel like your struggling. Loved her class, would take it again!
This class was super hard, it was definitely harder than my courses for my degree. She is super disorganized and not clear on what she wants to see from her students. She really rushes the lectures and skips over a lot of important information as well. Listen to these reviews and choose another prof!
Terri's class is tough, but using Unstuck study alongside the required readings can help navigate her grading. Feedback is sparse, but engaging in class discussions makes up for it. Not an easy A, but doable with effort.
Terri has taken radical action regarding AI prevention, so the same assignments that were expected last term, with students given weeks to write at home, are now in class assignments to be completed within lockdown browser in 80 minutes. There are also no rubrics or feedback provided on the assignments to explain her grading or reasoning.
She has a very confusing and unorganized D2l shell making it difficult to find resources. Her feedback is extremely poor leaving me without answers on how to improve my essay, which is difficult as essays are a large majority of the weighting for this course. I would highly recommend taking this course with another professor if possible.
I usually do well in school and don't drop classes, but Terri's course is an exception. She has severe trust issues with AI, making students write a 1400-word essay in just 80 minutes with lock-down. Her quiz grading is brutal too. By the time she dropped this assessment style, it was too late to recover. If you value your GPA, avoid her class.
Avoid Baker at all costs! Very unorganized with lectures, we spend half the class sitting in silence "reflecting" while she goes on her phone/reads notes, yet makes attendance mandatory. D2L page is impossible to follow. Has AI restrictions that confuse her and the students, changes exam/essay dates 2 days prior because of it. Confusing feedback.
Very nice lady, but lectures were very long and not engaging. Her essay outlines are vague and I was unaware was she was asking for a lot of the time. Gives either super harsh feedback and a B+ or favourable feedback and a C. Would not recommend if you are new to writing university style essays or not the best writer in general.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire 4 years at mru, I am suprised they havent let her go from her job.
if you value your grades and your sanity avoid her!
One of my first classes taken at MRU, biggest regret. She will tell you how great you work is in person then later on give you a C for the same things she advised you to fix/change. She is very unorganized and will flag or suspect you for AI without any proof of it. She gives no examples or shows you how assignments should be done.
horrible prof. gives terrible feedback and if she's feeling generous she will give you a c. if you email her there's a 25% chance she will reply and if she does she will be snarky and barely answer what was asked. she gave me a b in attendance when i was there for every single lecture. does not clearly explain what she wants for assignments.
My advice is if you need any GNED for MRU specfically, take another course. If you need it to transfer to uofc like myself, ONLY take it if this is the only option. I genuienly have A-A+ in my other courses but couldn't manage to get over an B in this class. Considering the lectures are useless, I don't even know why attendance is mandatory.
Harsh grader, little to no feedback given.
Never take her class unless you want all your hard work to be a waste. Very unorganized and is not clear on what she expects
Would not recommend
A good person but hated this class. Only got an A bc I'm naturally good at writing essays. Couldn't tell you what I learned in class LOL and I came every single day. Her rubrics are so bad, had to do a whole Q&A just so we can understand the assignment. She gave me a 15/17 on attendance and I had to email to get it 17/17 like hello?
