One of the worst and hardest math teachers. Doesn't know how to compile a test that can be completed in the alloted time. Is so involved in students understanding the concept of the material but doesn't spend enought time on examples to help further the learning process.
She's a great teacher in my opinion. You need to work hard to make an A, but give me a break, its Calculus C. She helps in every way she can if you need her help and she's a really nice teacher. Totally fair grading scale, lazy people might have trouble.
Good teacher but the class just moves really fast. She actually is one of UAH's better profs but its just a hard class to keep up with all the material. She looks like she mighta use to have been hott too.
She's a nice person, but I don't like the fact that she spent a lot of time on theoretical stuff.
Great teacher. She loves answering questions, and can always answer them effectively. She is willing to skip lunch to help the day of a test.
Make sure you remember your earlier calc classes. Overall she as a great teacher. Very helpful and willing. I recommend her. Do your homework and you'll be fine.
Her exams were unfairly difficult and she wasn't very good at teaching the material. I think 50% of the people I had her with wound up taking the class again.
Easy to understand, very helpful and caring. Dr. Johnson moved at a leisurely pace, much slower than I expected - which was fantastic. You'll have every chance to ask questions, and have your questions fully answered, before she moves on to the next section in the book. Very helpful one-on-one, also. Recommended if you want an easy course.
ugh, linear algebra sucks. and she makes it even more boring. she knows what she is talking about and can answer questions.. but the class is uber boring. focuses a LOT on the theoretical stuff. gives good partial credit on hw.. but not on tests. she tries to trick you on tests by wording things weird and sometimes its hard to tell what she wants
Average professor but better than other MA 244 teachers. Linear algebra is a hard subject (the theory). 30% of her tests are theory, and she assigns minimal homework. She is very nice and semi-helpful. She doesn't tend to give partial credit, unless you give her what she is looking for. Quizzes are easy, but tests are much harder. I give her a C+.
I had her for my linear algebra course. The class was very difficult, and her tests were extremely difficult. She does give a good amount of partial credit, and this class is very tough to begin with. If you take her, prepare to do a lot of studying, specifically on the theory involved. Even though she was quite difficult, I recommend her.
I don't know about her "math" teaching skill, but as a stats teacher, she's wonderful! Very clear, very interesting. Tests weren't that bad once u got the hand of it, which means you have to go to class. Plus, she's so used to teaching engineers (class full of guys), so she enjoyed my class which consisted of like, 5 girls...
Was only her second time teaching Cal C, but she made it pretty tough. Really stresses good integration skills. Tended to make the test harder than the homework/quizzes. Will not give many chances for extra credit, and sometimes won't give much partial credit. If you are good in math, you will have no trouble, but if you tend to struggle; avoid.
I cannot believe that there are people who did not like this teacher. Of course, before this, I took Calculus with the meanest teacher on the face of the planet, so she was an angel to me. I absolutely adored this teacher.
She is an amazing professor. I never had any problems in understanding her. In between I struggled but it was my own mistake, and I fixed it. I am getting an A in this class though I had a C in a midterm. Gives homework and take quizes every week. And exams are mostly book problems. I would reccommend this professor to everyone.
Pretty good teacher, easy to understand. The grading is a little tough and sometimes its hard to tell what she wants on the proofs.
Good Teacher. Used many examples to help you to understand the material. Quizzes and Tests are based on your knowledge of how to do the kind of problem not so much having to know specifics on everything. She is always there to clarify things if need be. Study the examples and quizzes to do good on the tests. Gives a lot of partial credit.
Best math professor ever! She gives lots of partial credit and goes over all the problems that will be on the tests during class. If you do all the homework and make sure that you understand it then you will do great in this class!
Fairly easy in the start then goes down hill. She always uses a guitar analogy of she can play all day but if you dont go home and practice you wont learn. Well in class she practices country, gives classical for homework then tests on heavy metal. there is little to no connect between any of the work. PASS was discouraged for single sessions?
One of the best. Genuinely nice lady. Knows her stuff. She is easy to understand, but will push beyond the basics into the realm of real challenge. Examples show thought and preparedness: they show you a variety of situations/applications well beyond the book. Exams are tough if you rely on pattern recognition and haven't done work on your own.
Dr. Johnson is probably the best cal teacher I have had so far. BUT class can be VERY tough because she tests on understanding instead of memorizing/patterns. Do the homework she assigns, go to class, and if you need help go to her office hours! She is extremely nice and wants you to do well. If you actually want to learn cal, take Dr. Johnson.
good person + good teacher. alot of teachers are well learned but arent very good at teaching others. ms johnson is not that
First off Mrs. Johnson is not a bad teacher (for the MAJORITY). Yet in my case, we did not get along. I would ask her a question and would not get a clear answer out or be ignored completely. So I tried studying with a group and on my own. The majority of the class made B's, while I failed. So if you take Johnson be prepared to do some work.
I loved this teacher! I'm not a math person, and I ended up having to take this class only because of my major, however when I changed it to business I no longer needed it so I was stuck in it. So even though I ended up with a bad grade in here, she is a really good teacher and knows what she is talking about. This class requires a lot of studying.
Dr Johnson is a fantastic instructor. Very knowledgeable, friendly, and confident. Kinda cute too- in a middle-aged smart way. She does require a bit of homework, but it's math and repetition is important. I enjoyed he lectures very much and will definitely look for her class again in the semesters to come.
this lady will spend hours on theoretical insights that have nothing to do with the homework or tests. avoid if you want to pass. take her if youre a math major
Very knowledeable, helpful, and clear. I felt I actually learned the material, unlike some classes where you learn to memorize formulas. If that is what you are looking for take Dr. Johnson.
Her class requires a lot of work outside of class. I highly recommend seeking her help outside of class, because she is a PHENOMENAL at working one-on-one with students. Very sweet and caring woman too.
I absolutely loved having Professor Johnson as a teacher. She provides detailed explanations as to why these math methods exist and how to use them. Her tests were killer hard, but she went over the test afterward and showed the number of A's, B's, and so on made by the class. I think she went at a good pace for the class.
This woman was terrible. She assumed that everyone had taken a calculus course in high school and most of the time I had no idea what she was talking about. I'm a math person and I failed this class and was stressed out about it all semester, took it again over the summer and made an A with barely trying. Avoid Johnson at all costs.
She is a good math teacher and really wants for us to understand. I just do not like the study guide in groups and her just scan our work as the study guide. If you are not there for the study guide she will not post that study guide answer for you to see. All i can say is study hard and ask questions.
If you want to learn math take Dr. Johnson. She is clear in her teaching and truly cares for her students to learn. This is a RARE quality at the university level. Her test can be difficult. Focus on hardest homework problems to pass the test. 7th math teacher I've had at UAH and the BEST hands down!
Dr. Johnson is a great instructor. She will miss a few operations here and there on sample problems, but honestly, in a Cal C class, everyone does at some point. She is very clear about upcoming assignments and tests, and her examples usually illustrate the concepts sufficiently. Email feedback was never stressful, either. Dr. Johnson did well!
Dr. Johnson is a clear, helpful lecturer. I would definitely recommend her. Tests are easy until you get to the final. Final was exponentially harder than the other tests, and it caught a lot of students by surprise.
She made all the combinatorics crap at the beginning of the course waaaaay easier. She's a tough grader, but good expositor. The course hurt - but I learned a whole lot from it.
She was a good teacher but I hated how she gave quizzes on MyMathLab and half the final.
Great teacher! She was really helpful and very understanding.
Very sweet lady and a very good teacher. She is very helpful and actually cares if you understand the material or not. Definitely attend class. Not hard if you pay attention and try. Tests are not too hard.
Dr. Johnson is a very good teacher and is extremely willing to help you understand the material. She's tough and her tests are no joking matter, but keep a good work ethic and show her you care by attending class, doing homework, and seeing her when you need help, and you'll pass.
Most teachers really push the tutoring center. On the first day of class, Dr. Johnson said that if we had ANY issues or confusion, come to her first. This dedication to teaching never went away. She is, by far, the most compassionate teacher I have had here. She wants everyone to succeed!
Dr. Johnson lectures quickly and uses complicated language, but she is very logical and methodical in explaining concepts. Her tests are quite tricky and require a lot of trig and log knowledge, but it is possible to get A's on them. She really encouraged us to do extra practice problems, which were crucial to my success.
Definitely understands the material and is an excellent expositor. Expect theoretical/proof problems that make up 20%-30% of each test which can be tricky. Good if you want to really understand linear algebra. All textbook homework is optional, but expect quizzes and a couple of graded homeworks. Doing ALL optional homework got me through.
Dr. Johnson's lectures were great because she explained theories in class and worked multiple examples for each type of problem. She really wants her students to succeed and encourages students to visit her office hours. Dr. Johnson will personally help you through any trouble; she'll even inquire to make sure you are adjusting well. Great teacher!
Absolutely hated this class. The material wasn't hard, she just made it so. Never had a consistent grading scheme. During classwork assignments, everyone in the group would have the same thing but in the end we'd get different grades... she takes off major points for the smallest mistakes. avoid her for MA 330 if you can.
I took MA330 Foundations of Math in the Summer. Lectures were organized and clear. Pace was good. We were given time to work problems in class with others and then reviewed the solutions. Very responsive to questions both in and out of class. Gives good feedback. Tests were fair, questions were clear and straightforward, similar to homework.
I had Johnson for MA 172. She is honestly one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. She genuinely cares about her students, she'll probably learn everyone's name and how often they attend class within the first month. I missed class for the Dr's and she thought she skipped me during attendance. She is very theoretical however.
I've had a calculus class before, so this was review. If you have not had calculus, I'd be wary. Her tests are really focused on exponential/logarithmic functions, which of course are usually everyone's weak points. Do your homework, show up, and review all your homework (maybe do extra practice problems she gives) and the tests are VERY manageable
Lots of lectures, but they tend to be engaging. She is also very friendly, understanding, and relatable to students.
She is a fantastic professor and really cares about and pays attention to her students. Her tests are pretty easy, and she gives partial credit so minor mistakes won't hurt you that badly. In regular classes, she teaches theory but knows that her students may not be interested and won't test them on it. Honors classes will face more theory problems
Dr. Johnson is a stellar professor. Her class had a lot of work in it. Labs: easy, quizzes:tricky, discussions:freebies, homework:tricky, exams:murder. You had better prepare to study. Her door is always open and she will give you everything she can to help you succeed. In return you must be willing to give her everything to earn your grade.
Dr. Terri Johnson is an incredible professor. She cares so much about her students and is willing to go the extra mile to make sure the material is understood. She presented the material in a non-boring way that was easy to understand. She grades fairly and I can honestly say she is the best math teacher I have ever had.
Dr. Johnson is a great math professor. I had her for the most difficult math class in my curriculum(Cal B) and she made absolutely sure we knew what we were doing. I am miles ahead now in my Cal C class and it's all thanks to her. I would take her again in a heartbeat. She cares about her students, and is an all around great person/professor. gg
Dr. Johnson makes a lot of the material seem easy, which it can be, but you have to practice until your hands go numb to be ready for her exams. I would highly recommend going to her office hours to get help, and pick up a copy of Schaum's Outline of Probability and Statistics for extra practice.
She does a good job laying out expectations. Her test questions are derived from either the labs she gives or from unassigned homework. Good lecturer.
Dr. Johnson will not just give you formulas and tell you to solve the problems with those formulas; she will show you how to arrive at the formulas as well, which is crucial to understanding the material. She gives challenging tests, but balances it out by giving a decent amount of partial credit even if you miss a question. Highly recommend.
Best Cal A teacher at UAH! You do need the code for the online homework, but don't use the textbook otherwise. She posts all notes and lectures online. Attendance is worth a valuable 10% of your grade. She is extremely helpful in office hours and a generous partial credit grader. Straightforward, honest, and I100% recommend taking her.
Dr. Johnson is regarded as one of the better Calc professors, as an honors student she taught one of the honors sections. She is a nice lady but her method of teaching is less than ideal, very lecture heavy with very little practice. She did give good practice tests but beyond that and the partial credit there is little thats positive to say.
Dr. Johnson really cares about her students. Granted, I was a swimmer, and she already knew me. Tests were straightforward but that doesn't mean you didn't have to think about problems so studying came in handy ALOT. My biggest regret is that I didn't go to her office hours to know her better just as a person, but put in the work and get your A.
Horrible. Dr. Johnson will give tests based on things you didn't learn in class, and then harshly grade it. She isn't clear on what she wants from you, and she hardly shows you examples in her class before she is on to the next section, focusing more on lecture than on teaching her students how to work her problems.
Ive had many math teachers at UAH, and Johnson is the worst. She doesnt actually teach 385, she just basically has an hour and twenty minute conversation twice per week with the CS majors in the class who already know the material, in which they work problems without explanation of the guiding concepts. AND she is nicest to previous students.
Right now Dr. Johnson is the math coordinator so she decides the schedules for all the math classes. This is a big benefit for the students in her classes. The homework is very doable and she enables the "Help Me Solve This" function, which is very helpful. In order to do well (in any math class really) you have to show up.
Dr. Johnson is one of the best math professors I have ever had. She takes the time to learn everyone's name and is very personalized in her lectures. Even though the majority of the class had already taken calculus before, she made sure to fully explain material for people who were new to it. I'd recommend her to anyone. I'm taking her for Cal B.
Wanna learn? Take Johnson. Like math? Take Johnson. Like a challenge? Take Johnson. The class is rigorous due to the course, and Johnson makes sure to not fail you for trying. She gives partial credit for any and all attempts, is absolutely fantastic at lecturing, and gives a clear outline of class, work and all. Just take the class.
Dr. Johnson is an amazing calculus teacher (she's head of the department). She's fantastic at walking through both abstract and technical skills. That being said, the exams are pretty tough but she gives a ton of partial credit and doesn't really care if you get the right answer as long as your work is good. Highly recommend!
Dr. Johnson was a great calculus teacher, and you can tell she really cares about math. I had taken calculus before this class so it made the class a little easier, but she gives you a lot of resources to succeed.
Honors research class requires a lot of outside reading of research articles. Small presentation at the end of the year. Great professor. Would take her again. Gives great feedback on work instead of taking points off.
I really struggled with this class. She is a very kind professor who clearly cares about her students, but I struggled with the online format and fell behind extremely quickly. I think I would've done so much better in person with her. Her lecture style is fast paced. If you struggle with math like I do, I would still recommend her, but in person.
You need to attend the PASS sections and work hard to pass. She's friendly but she goes really quickly and will quickly leave you behind. I'm sure he would have been better if it wasn't online but overall felt out of touch with the level her students were at
Dr. Johnson is the best teacher I have had in college. She makes her classes challenging, but she ensures that you learn the material. If you don't understand something, her doors are always open, and she will do her best to help you with anything. She makes class entertaining, and she keeps students engaged by taking short breaks to play games.
Dr. Johnson is the best professor in the math department by a mile. After more than 20 years of teaching, she still cares about her students and teaches very well- she guides you through everything but expects your participation. She is very consistent and clear in grading and policies, responsive, and professional.
Dr. Johnson is one of the best math instructors I have ever had. Admittedly, Calculus B is a hard course but Dr. Johnson presents the material in a way that everyone can understand.
A good professor who sometimes explains things too simply. She cares about not just how but why to do problems. Gives out a few homework assignments each week, but I wish she gave out more to study for tests. You can't go wrong picking her for Cal B.
Dr. Johnson is a fantastic instructor. Briskly paced lectures, but not too quick to miss anything in my opinion. She has a sincere rapport with her students, and is ready and willing to help anyone who's struggling. Having already taken AP Calc, Cal A was a breeze, but even so I could tell how much she cared about the class and math in general.
I had her on zoom lectures twice a week, she made things easy to understand and tried to help anyone who didnt understand and would go back and reexplain things carefully. Tests werent too bad, they were exactly like the homework.
I took Cal A and B with Ms. Johnson. She does a great job presenting the material in lectures and does not make you feel stupid. She does require attendance, but I find that it was really helpful in an online format and the attendance grade is a huge grade booster. The assignments are helpful and she is clear with her expectations from the start.
DISCLAIMER: I have heard she is great for 100 lvl courses. However, she made MA 385 one of the most difficult classes I've ever taken. This is the only D I ever received. Did the math, each test requires you to be comfortable with 7 random problems taken out of a bank of over 68 styles of examples you do before the test. takes too much studying. :(
Teaches well and does lots of examples, has weekly homework assignments that short. My only grief is studying for tests; She advises to do examples chosen out of the book and past homework/lab questions. There is also a quiz due the day before the test, but the result of the quiz is locked so you can't tell what you need to focus on.
If you truly love math, take her. She was one of the best professors I had this semester. If you dont participate, or pay attention, it will bite you in the butt when it comes test time.
Johnson is a professor who cares about all of her students, however, sometimes I felt patronized in her class sometimes if I didn't know something that she said I should have learned already. She's an efficient teacher and gets back to emails quickly. Overall a solid teacher, except when you don't know things that she deems you should know.
Very caring and she goes in-depth about how equations are derived in the lectures. She's quick to respond to emails and is readily available outside of class if you have questions. Very fair grading scale, although your grade is primarily determined by tests. She's also generous with partial credit on tests.
Her lectures are enjoyable. The tests are very difficult. If you get test anxiety, do not take this course with Mrs. Johnson. The tests cover MANY sections, like 6 each, and she gives NO STUDY GUIDES. Often I found myself struggling to determine what I needed to focus on in my studying. Tests questions are often the hardest variants from the text.
Dr. Johnson was a wonderful Calc professor for Calc A. As an honors student, I was afraid of taking a harder calc class, and it was challenging, but Dr. Johnson wants to help and wants you to succeed. Her honors tests are pretty challenging, and she gives a good bit of homework, but she's really kind and respected.
Really enjoyed Johnson. Lectures/notes were uploaded after class. Group assignments weren't stressful and were just problems you could work on your own. Homework was fairly easy if you listened to lectures. If you were comfortable with homework/group work the tests weren't real difficult. Honors contract was easy super easy as well.
She was AMAZING! I took Dr. Johnson for both A and B and loved it. If you actively participate in class and put effort in you will do fine. She is very open for questions and loves it when students are actually enjoying the subject. She was my favorite teacher my freshman year and urge everyone to take her.
Dr. Johnson is an amazing Calculus B professor. She is very consistent in her teaching, and she is very helpful during her office hours. I am in her honors class so her tests are brutal but reasonable. She grades for mastery and is very nice with partial credit on tests. I would definitely take her again.
horrible teacher, is bad at teaching
Dr Johnson was extremely involved with her students and pushed for their success.
Dr Johnson is an amazing professor. She is very kind and always glad to help you when you do not understand. I am taking her again for Calculus II because she is just that awesome! Definitely would recommend.
Dr. Johnson was very supportive in contributing to the knowledge that I already had about Calculus. I would highly recommend taking this class.
Incredibly involved teacher. I had not had calculus before taking her. Only nitpick I have is she sometimes fails to fully explain how things were simplified which can make certain lessons hard to follow. Overall, very compassionate and understanding. Would recommend!
Dr. Johnson is a great teacher! Lots of time to practice in class, where you can easily ask questions. I took the honors section, but the only difference is some labs that you get time to work on in class. Definitely recommend, and I'll be taking her again next semester.
The lectures are easy to follow, although Prof. Johnson does occasionally skip over a few steps to keep the class rolling. She is always willing to answer questions and makes herself available. The best part of her class is its style--half lecture, half do-it-on-your-own. I feel like I learned much more quickly and easily because of this format.
She's a really great teacher, and presents the material in an accessible manner. There's a worksheet for every class, but most days you complete it in class and it's graded as homework. If you aren't in class tho it's not available for you to complete :/ She's a super fast grader, and is always available to help.
Professor Johnson is a great professor. I had already taken Calculus 1 back in high school, so the material was easy to follow. Her lectures were great and mostly covered everything you needed to know. There are worksheets after almost every lecture and are great practice for the material you just covered. I am taking her again next semester!
She's friendly, but not an effective teacher, and it's very difficult to get help when you need it. I would avoid taking this teacher if possible.
