Makes you work hard but is very clear and helpful. You will learn something in this class.
The course is not a joke but you will learn a lot!

Good teacher, but mean if you get on her bad side
A dreadful subject that she made very enjoyable. I was able to take away a skill from her class that I never thought I would posses. My confidence in speaking in front of a group grew imensly. I highly recommened taking her class for your requirment.
Pretty fun class, she makes everything clear and as long as u do the work and practice your speeches, u should get an "A".
she rides dirt bike and goes to the desert, it's great. if you get bored in class talk to her, she's fun to talk to. never ever ever walk in front of someone's presentation.
she trys to keep us involved and shes interesting, its chill
She is an easy grader for speeches, cool personality unless u make her mad, you know when ur speeches are they arent called at random, pretty easy teacher.
class was absolutely fun! I have to say the final was a killer though-she had us write 5essays!!It was 20 pages!! Other than that, it was fun!
Awesome teacher!! : )
it sucked it was very hard and she was not very encouraging
i didnt like this class at all. and i didnt like that teacher.
Teri is a good tacher and very helpful if you ask her for help. She wants you to pass and do well in her class. This was a very hard class and I managed to get an A. I would recomend her for this class!!
Terri is a cool teacher. She explains everything in detail and tells the class what she expects from each speech. The class is pretty chill and kickback.
i hate this teacher. she is full of herself and extremely difficult compared to other GEO classes. She teaches the curriculum but is extremely annoying when she is SPEAKING. she should be fired
She was a fun teacher but the work was too difficult. I worked so hard in that class and got a c, and a friend of mine used all my work and got an A in another course! Very hard grader and very strict.
she grades hard, end of story. you must perform a perfect speech to gain even a low A. dont get on her bad side. do not talk in class. the look she gives you for speeking out of turn feels like she is taking out your soul.
She takes attendance EVERY day! She'll email you if you miss two classes in a row. She grades really hard on the speeches... she's a good teacher but she's anal & don't get on her bad side, because she will hate you for the whole semester. So, go to class, don't talk during class, and make sure your speeches are perfect.
i think she was an amazing teacher who really helped. her class was so much fun and even though it was difficult to get an A, if you pay attention and actually go to class you'll be fine. i loved her as a teacher
Not a bad class. she is a great teacher. make sure you do your outlines without procrastinating and practice your speeches a lot before its your day. DO YOUR QUIZES!! not too hard to do good in the class just do your stuff
She is the hardest GEO teacher I have heard of with CSUSM. But she makes you actually learn it. It's a tough class but you will be thankful when you're done and you really know how to speak in public, rather than holding your outline in-front of you or a paper and just reading it like I've heard from other classes. She's very serious about class.
Though she is probably one of the hardest GEO teachers here at San Marcos, I feel that I learned a lot from her. Do the quizzes, outlines, and practice your speeches and you will be fine. She is really down to earth and is passionate about the subject.
This is very, very difficult. She is a nice lady, and the you will learn a lot in the course but it is very difficult. I would recommend taking this course with someone else or at a JC (to get an easy A).
Wow this class was one of my hardest comm classes. I Was struggling to maintain a C. Good luck.
Overall good quality class and professor. I have heard she is one of the hardest GEO professors but all you have to do is your JOB! Try, do your work, and take time for the class and you;ll get a good grade. Just practice your speeches and you'll do fine. She cares a lot about her students and the class so she is very approachable and helpful.
loved her class. i hate public speaking but she was a great and fun professor. was afraid of class at first but she made us feel comfortable and wasnt that hard of a grader on speeches. take the online quizzes and practice speeches and you will do great. would definitely recommend her class. she is very helpful
Really nice. I was so scared of doing speeches in front of the class but she grades easy. The quizzes are online and the final is super easy.
This was a hard class! However, you can get a good grade if you work hard and I mean hard. I didn't do well on her test but I worked hard on every assignment and got "A"'s or "B"'s and ended up with a "B" in the class.
LOVED HER! AMAZING TEACHER! MAKES THE CLASS FUN IF YOU ARE THERE TO LEARN AND PAY ATTENTION. IF YOU PAY ATTENTION AND DO YOUR QUIZZES THEN YOU ARE GUARANTEED TO HAVE A GOOD GRADE (A+). SHE MAKES YOUR ASSIGNMENT AND SPEECHES VERY EASY TO DO. HER PREPARATIONS ARE THE BEST! THE LONGEST SPEECH IS AROUND 7-8 MINUTES LONG BUT SHE IS A GREAT TEACHER
Not a bad class. The book was a nightmare, but if you didn't keep up with the readings it was easy to getlost in class. The content has come in handy in some other classes I've taken.
her grading is unrealistic for a freshman GEO class. She has a crappy personality. She lets her personal view of you affect that way she grades you. Kiss ass to get an A. If not then you will get a C if you're lucky
She is very helpful. It could be an easy class if the person loves talking, but she only want a quiz card, and that's it.
She is a good professor! Class topic is interesting and she want everyone get a good grade on her class. No midterm but just have some quiz only 3 question. 10-12pages final paper and final exam. Overall, good class and good professor.
I liked her as my GEO professor! She's really chill and I feel like she's still a student by the way she talks to us. Love her interesting accent. Make sure to practice your speeches beforehand and be prepared to do the work. This class really helped a lot. Now I feel like I can give long presentations and I'm not afraid of speaking anymore!
She is very helpfull but her opinion of you does affect her grading. some reading and quizzes. she loves to talk and does leave a lot of work.
Great professor! This class is always fun to go to. She is always so bubbly and positive it's refreshing! I definitely recommend her.
She is super bubbly and nice, always telling stories and trying to connect with the class. She does grade your speeches a bit toughly, but its totally an easy class if you just do the work and make sure to prepare for the speeches, would totally recommend her :)
Structured, helpful, easy, and informative
I know a lot of people complain about her, but I will never understand why. I was so scared and nervous to take this course, but she made everything clear and simple. She's very personable and it's obvious she enjoys her job. If you work hard and take her constructive criticism seriously, you will pass this class.
She's a very positive person! I loved that she would never let us leave a lecture confused. She always gave examples but she's a little tougher than the other public speaking classes.
She is an amazing oral comm. teacher. She does a really good job of telling you about how each speech is graded. I love coming to her class. She does a lot of partner in class talking and helps let you get to know people in your class so when you do your speech it's not like you're talking to strangers.
She is so funny and down to earth. She will tell you a lot of stories from her husband and children, but they are just really cute. She is a tough grader, and she will have more work than other GEO professors, but you learn so much!!!
Terri is an AMAZING GEO teacher. She loves what she does and she is willing to work with you. She gets to know you, and tries to make this class fun. She was a pretty easy grader, as long as you followed the guidelines for the speeches. Participation is key, and you have to show up to class to get a good grade.
She is a great teacher. She does have a stricter grading criteria than most GEO professors, and compared to other GEO classes you usually have a lot more homework and presentations. HOWEVER, you learn so much and she really is a fair grader. If you do the work, show progress and show up, youll be okey.
Don't get me wrong she's an awesome professor, but she makes this class way more difficult than it needs to be. If you're not good at public speaking I would recommend a different professor. Her grading criteria is hard, in fact way harder than most GEO professors. There are no testsquizzes so your grade is based solely on homework and speeches.
Super nice and friendly. Loves her students. Demands respect.
Terri is honestly the best teacher ever. She can make a student laugh. Her grading is easy if you follow the rubric. She also makes the class quite fun.
Amazing teacher! She was very nice and she was a very easy grader. Definitely one of my favorite classes!
I thought about giving her 3 point in the Easiness area until the replacement professor came. She is a great teacher and does care about student.
The beginning of the class is mostly reading and you definitely need the book because theres a quiz on each chapter online. A lot of speech memorization and you only get one notecard when you speak which is different form other GEO classes or so I've heard. The requirements are laid out in front of you and she helps you improve on your speeches.
There are a lot of speeches and speech outlines. She is very particular when it comes to the outlines. The beginning of the semester is when you do a lot of reading and chapter quizzes, but after that it is all speeches. The final is a take home final made up of four short essays about what you learned and advice you would give incoming students.
She is so understanding and very funny. I didn't enjoy her class as much as I would want to because I don't like public speaking, she made us present a speech almost every week.
Terri was a great professor. She really understood her students' anxiety for public speaking and did whatever was in her power to make us more comfortable. Our speeches were not difficult because she made sure we knew exactly what to do before them. If you practice and follow speech outlines, the class an easy A.
Prof Metzger is amazing, I would take her again. She truly cares about communication and her students. Everything she assigns is for a reason and there is never busy work. I highly recommend her.
She's a nice/fair grader. She also gives good feedback on your speeches. There's a lot of speeches, but it's nothing you can't do. I would take her again!
She made the class worth going to even though I hated Public Speaking! The class energy was relaxed and chill. We all supported each other and didn't judge other's while presenting. Definitely hope I have her as a professor again!
She is very nice and always helpful! Class is never boring and you listen to speeches mostly. I would most defently take this class again it was a very easy A! There are a lot of outlines to be done, but they get easier as the semester gets done! My favorite GE class by far. She makes you learn and you will improve by so much! highly recommend!!!
At the beginning of the semester you start with a lot of reading along with reading quizzes and the 2nd half is all speeches. The final is a take home final consisting of 4 short essays which are really easy to do since its mostly just about evaluating what you learned in class. Anyways, easy class and awesome professor!
I want my money back, she puts the terri in terrible... I hated her class with a passion, I managed to get an A in the class overall but this was the hardest A ever ( and I'm an A student). The professor can be mean sometimes, and her directions are awful and unclear, do yourself a favor and run as fast as you can.
Aside from the bland course material, the professors approach to the course is questionable. Assignment instructions were often vague and unclear. The professor would come across as condescending at times and lacked professionalism when directing profanities at students. Grading and treatment did not seem subjective.
For a communications professor there's a lack of self control and professionalism. The school needs to take a look at her approach. Grits her teeth when she has to repeat something. She's on a power trip and I hope whatever she's going through, she deals with it because we were her victims last semester and it was not pleasant. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
This class wasnt amazing but its not as awful as others describe it to be. Prof metzger is actually pretty nice and all the assignments were super easy as long as you followed the instructions. One complaint i do have is that sometimes assignments werent very clear but its not hard to email a professor to clarify. Also speeches sucked. Easy A.
LOVED HER! Terri was awesome. she was pretty laid back and super nice. I skipped probably about 5 times and still did good in the class. Grades are mostly based on speeches. I think I showed a lot of improvement in writing and confidence in this class
For GEO, she was amazing! Such a good lecturer and she genuinely wants you to get a good grade. Her class is basically composed of reading and quizzes (online) and a few speeches that she gives you plenty of time to prepare. I got an A, would totally do it again.
Terri Metzger was such a wonderful professor. She's so kind, welcoming, and light hearted, I really enjoyed her class. I took this class during COVID online season because I hate speeches and was worried about presenting in person. If you're like me, you should take the course ASAP with Metzger. Also this course was pretty chill in general.
Not a bad teacher/class, but one HUGE flaw. Grading of speeches placed more importance on time than content. If you had amazing content but were one second over time, she will give you 67% on the assignment. A mediocre speech within her time limits will get full credit. Assignment can be "too short" even though there is only a max WC - beware!
Sure, she's nice. Does that make you a good teacher? No. Considering the fact that she's a communications teacher for an online class, it's even less acceptable that she took weeks to respond to emails. She cancelled class less than an hour beforehand due to a surgery the week before. You had plenty of time to tell us ma'am. Just saying.
This was such a fun class!! Metzger is so sweet, she's a bit eccentric but she's amazing. Readings aren't bad, but they're necessary for the quizzes. Expect 1 mini-speech every week, with 4 bigger project speeches throughout the course. 1 reflection paper and no final. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Professor Metzger was a passionate and driven teacher. Her class was synchronous, with lectures on zoom and classwork on Mindtap. She provides plenty of resources for her students to succeed in her course. There is a good amount of homework in her class, but it was manageable.
Professor Metzger is probably one of the sweetest professors I've had so far at CSUSM! She never fails to make her classes fun and genuinely wants to form a connection with her students. She's not a painfully hard grader and notices good effort. Just make sure you actually speak in her class and you're guaranteed a good grade.
Do not skip class. You will fall very behind and will not pass. Make sure you stay on top of the homework and know when things are due. Overall she is really fun, hilarious, and kind.
She does not accept late work. At all. Don't turn in anything late. If you know you're going to miss your speech day just let her know before hand and she will let you do it another day without penalty. You will have to talk/ work with the people around you a lot so don't be shy.
Professor Metzger is a great professor and her class is a great start to learning more about the aspects of oral communication and what assets you can develop for your speech skills. Participation is huge in this course, but the workload isn't too bad. HW is online-based correlated to the online textbook, and heavy on practicing speeches.
Throughout this class Terri makes it very difficult to learn. Her homework process for one cost money to do And for two is impossible. It doesn't let you know when things are due so you just have to guess and if you miss one assignment you immediately have an F in her class. She targets specific students making them feel unwanted in the class.
Terri is very nice and funny but her grading is tough. She has specific things she wants from you and if you don't meet her expectations it will reflect in your grade. As someone who doesn't enjoy public speaking at all, this class naturally brought me a lot of anxiety. However Terri made the environment as comfortable and welcoming as possible.
I really enjoyed this class. It was difficult to give speeches, but if you're good at talking in front of people, you won't have any trouble. She is amazing at teaching and made the three-hour class as good as possible. She plays games with the class and is easy to understand.
At the start of class, things went well. On my third speech day, my dog was hit by a car. I informed Terri but faced a 25% grade deduction unless I proved my dog went to the vet, which wasn't possible. Her response lacked empathy, although I emailed explaining, I got no reply. This experience made me question the balance between rules & compassion.
Great professor who really tries to make the course engaging. Homework is online reading quizzes & watching videos. Lots of chances to talk to classmates & make friends. No exams, just speeches, but she does like to nitpick speeches; you have to strictly adhere to the criteria. Very friendly and understanding, and fosters a welcoming environment.
This is a *tough* class… Homework is due weekly in the form of reading quizzes on Mindtap. I would HEAVILY recommend doing all homework for the year in the first couple weeks so you can focus on writing speeches. Do NOT slack on speeches or you will suffer for it. As a linguistics major I loved this class but it was a pretty hard class in general
She's an ok professor but she grades the speeches too hard, probably the hardest out of all the GEO professors. There are better professors to take this class with plus she talks a lot.
Terri was a very insightful professor. Her class is participation heavy but it makes it super engaging and interesting. She plays lots of games with the class to break awkwardness. As long as you recite your speeches plenty of times passing will not be an issue.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS PLEASE!!!!!! Metzger is not considerate for her students at all and is a very tough grader for a GENERAL ED class. I don't know anyone in the class that has gotten 100% on speeches and singles out students in front of the class and makes them feel unwelcome. Don't be fooled by the nice reviews she is horrible.
I love her!!! She is so great and is not a super tough grader. You can tell she really values that you did the work and did your best over than doing it 100% perfect. The class is a good amount of work, but so is every other GEO class. She always told us super fun stories
Very tough grader for speeches and outlines, the grading criteria is not clear and only mentions what she is looking for after she graded. She is willing to answer any questions and wants high participation. She also helps the class bond through games. Provides good practice opportunities and good material to read.
Her class mainly consisted of preparing for speeches. Overall, we had three speeches: one knowledge-based speech, which you had to do without doing research, one research-based informative speech, which we needed to use peer-reviewed research, and one research-based persuasive speech, which we had to use another peer-reviewed research.
She was alright. Homework was easy and so were quizzes. Attendance is mandatory. She grades tough on speeches. Lectures are incredibly boring and she is very much like a high school teacher. Wasn't the biggest fan, she seemed like she lacked compassion at times. Wouldn't take her again.
It's an engaging and fun class with plenty of interactive games, and the professor is very nice and supportive. However, there are three mandatory speeches you must complete to pass, about up to six minutes long and requiring memorization. If its hard to remember speeches DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I really enjoyed this class and would take her again. She's clear, organized, and approachable. Attendance is mandatory, no late work, and the grade is less speech-dependent than other classes. She explains expectations upfront, encourages communication, and creates a fair, supportive learning environment.
A great instructor who keeps the class straightforward. The homework is easy, there are no surprise tests, and her instructions are always clear. We only have three main speeches, and she gives plenty of time to prepare, making the workload manageable and fair.
Kind of teaches like a high school teacher no phones or technology in class, but her assignments are very easy and clear, so as long as you show up you should get a good grade in the class. Attendance policy allows for 3 absences throughout the semester, which impacts your participation grade in class (she takes attendance everyday).
RUDE!!! I asked a question and she was unhelpful and LIED!
There are 3 main speeches, and they progress in difficulty but plenty of time is given to prepare. They're low pressure and you're graded on the prep too, not just delivery. There were a few times she was sassy to students, but if you're respectful & on task you should be fine. There was easy homework each week & we played a couple fun games.
