Very helpful, and understanding. She wanted her students to do their best and was an easy grader.
great teacher! she is very caring and understanding. she makes the subject fun and interesting. you will love her too.
excellent teacher
Nice teacher. Subject is hard but she makes it easy.
Very helpful and understanding. Ok testes! I think she is really cool. Recommend to take her if you need this course.
She is bad. does not know what she is talking about. the class is hard, and she makes it worse.
hot, up, funny, clear, helpful, we lover her!!
At first she seems hard and tough, shes really nice, helpful and a great teacher.
I had prior knowledge on the subject and it really helped me to do well in the class, so I am not certain how someone without this edge would fare. She's intelligent and I can imagine that some of the things she says goes right over student's heads. She will lead you to the water though if you ask!
this class is not easy. she talks in circles it seems. unless you have a confused look on your face or ask for help, good luck. The material is boring!!
I thought she was great... I went into the class knowing nothing and came out with a solid A. Show up to her class and do the work and you'll do fine. She is very helpful when you need it, do not be afraid to ask. Highly Recomended
great teacher!!! very helpful, answers every question you ask, and very sweet. I would love to take another class with her!!!
She can be confusing at times, but as long as you come to class, take notes and follow her study guides youll be fine. If you actually put some time into it the class wont be that hard!
I love prof. mathis! Very caring and concerned about students doing well and understanding the material. she is by far the best ling 417 teacher! You have to buy the books and pay attention for the midterm, final and quizzes but she does give review sheets which help a lot. There is one paper with presentation. She will go out of her way to help u!
She is great. really cares and sets her pace acording to the needs of the class. She has helped me with advice for other classes as well. I wish all my teachers were like her!!!!!!
Very hard grader, a bit unfair at times. Tests are a bit hard, and she gives a lot of homework. Not recommended, unless you have a lot of time.
The best professor at CSUN! Take her class! No BS. No surprises. She tells it like it is (and she knows her stuff). Not too many assignments and she provides review sheets for all tests. Awesome!
Subject was not easy; really confusing. Prof Mathis helped a lot. Got a B+ and I didn't really put as much time in studying as I should have. She gave a lot of worksheets to practice from and wants her students to be successful. Awesome teacher...plan on taking her for Ling 417.
At first the class may seem hard and difficult, however, she is really helpful. She gives out study guides for the test. You have to read the book if you miss class or don't take notes. I started out with a D and ended up with a B!.
absolutely the worst experience i have ever had at CSUN. i have to admit she tried to help but I was lost throughout the course and intimidated by her glare. not an easy course for those who have a hard time with technical parts of speech. i barely passed the class and hope i never have a class like this one again.
She WILL NOT spoon feed you but she is helpfull. Gave us a number of handouts that I still refer to today. Don't take her if you are lazy. Jump all the way in and you will learn a lot!
She's really nice and considerate. She knows her stuff and knows how to teach it. Not too much homework, but enough to keep you thinking. Take her class; you will actually learn.
She is a good teacher, but if you are lost in the beginning of the semester, GOOD LUCK.
The course overall is hard do not take this class if you are a lazy person. It is not an easy A at all. She tries to help you but if you are lost since the begining then GOOD LUCK!!!!!
Excellent teacher! Not for the faint. Lectures, notes, homework, quizzes & handouts very clear. Expectations very clear. Not an easy A unless you are a dedicated student (which I noticed most young kids are not). She is funny and very caring. Learned a ton!
not an easy subject but if you take good notes and pay attention..ull understand it..5 hw,either one or two midterms, and a final...i got an A in the end
The class isn't easy:you have 5 homework assignments and homework is worth 50 percent of your grade,so it's really dumb to miss even one assignment. Her midterm is straightforward,I got 100 percent on it.The final is harder because it consists of essay questions, but she's real nice so she grades it charitably.Pay attention to lectures, book sucks
Prof. Mathis is great!!! She is always willing to help anyone and answer any questions. The class is not easy, it requires studying buy she makes it fun, enjoyable and very easy to understand. I would take any of her classes again. I loved her class. try not to be absent because every class is new information that you need. She gives study guides!
She's a nice person and cares about her students. However, she does tend to get flustered/frustrated with the class if you don't understand after the first explaination. Attend lectures if you're not going to read. To pass you need to do the homeworks. Hard midterm, easier final.
Mathis is really nice and very helpful. The class is hard and her tests are hard but if you show up to class every day and do the reading, you will get a good grade. I recommend this professor!
Took the class to fulfill an elective and couldn't have had a better experience. Mathis is one of the best professors I've had at CSUN. She knows her stuff and is clear, helpful, funny, and down to earth too.
This teacher knows what she is talking about but if you ask a question, she makes you look like an idiot. Sometimes she just looks at you and laughs after you ask without even answering when it wasnt a dumb question. very frustrating teacher! Doesnt really care about your feelings or anything. MANDATORY attendance.
Had a much higher excepation for this class. A little boring most of the time, she's very nice but the subjects is more intesesting than the class. Much more difficult than excepted.
The topics we discussed were really interesting! She gives pop quizzes on the readings so make sure you do them! She's funny and discussions in class were super interesting. She does grade harshly on the project/tests so study! I'd definitely recommend her though :)
Great professor! She expects you to do the reading and class participation is key! Her readings are very fun and there is always a discussion about them. She is nice and approachable, I loved this class. Pay attention in class and you'll have fun and pass!
Great teacher, nice, funny, interesting, down to earth. Difficult material but she makes it bearable. Very knowledgeable and patient.
Prof. Mathis is an incredibly sweet person. She demonstrates that she genuinely cares about the success of her students. She goes out of her way to do things to help her students which I would not expect from an ordinary professor.
Great instructor, sweet, funny and really down to earth. She is very helping and knows what she is doing. One of my favs at CSUN
I'm very glad I chose to take this course with Professor Mathis. She's such an amazing professor. She has such genuine care for her students along with the material - simply awesome person. There is however TONS of daily reading, and the homework is spread out pretty nicely within the semester, but I definitely recommend Professor Mathis.
I'm glad I took this class, it was definitely one of my favorites so far at CSUN. There's a good amount of reading but it's interesting so I didn't mind and class time is mostly discussion with occasional quizzes (with fair warning). Professor Mathis is great and I highly suggest taking this class!
Prof Mathis is the best! she makes grammar interesting - believe it or not. 5 graded assignments that are not hard and one final. as long as you show up and do the exercises before class, you'll be golden :)
Professor Mathis is the best! She makes sure that you learn a lot, but makes her assignments pretty fun and interesting. She is really clear in her expectations and is easily available for help and clarification if needed. She doesn't take attendance, but there are pop quizzes at the beginning of some classes. Highly recommend.
Professor Mathis is a great professor. You will have readings that you are required to do every week before the next class. No hw but very important that you understand them for class discussions and exams. There is a midterm and final plus a group/individual project.
Professor Mathis is incredible! I learned so much throughout the semester with her! There are daily readings so try to keep up with them because they'll be discussed in class and the midterm and final are based on the readings. Overall, you won't regret taking Professor Mathis!
Mathis is the most amazing Professor! She really wants to give accurate information. In ENGL 302, there is not a lot of homework, but you gotta put in the time if you want that A. IN her other classes she has a pretty okay amount of reading, many students complain about it, but I thought it was average?
Enjoyable class! Great teacher. There is a group presentation, plus annotated bibliography, some hw, and lots of reading (which you can skim through as long as you get the main points down).
This is one of the best professors I've had in a while. She really takes the time to help you understand. She provides the necessary supports. I'm absolutely going to take her again. I've learned so so so much.
Lots and lots of reading. Tests are 6-9 short essays & a few TF questions. You better know what you read because all of its on the exams. Group project was hellish for me, but that was due to my partners, but not difficult. She really opened my eyes to the power of language. Great class but very hard.
She was the most difficult professor. She always spaces out and can be mean sometimes. Never taking her again!!! Lots of reading so be ready for that!!
She knows her subject matter real well and is a tough grader but she does make every assignment clear. If you do not participate you will lose points, if English or teaching is your major, she's your gal. Very intelligent teacher but tough grader and a good amount of reading, and assignments. Good teacher though, would take again.
This is a hard subj! but she really helps you understand! 7 hw assignments, they are helpful! one final exam! class is fun but hard& makes you feel DUMB ha! find friends in class to get through it tho! she is helpful if u have Qs. not tons of work but your brains sometimes hurts by the end of class!doesnt take roll but if u miss class u wont pass
Such a great teacher! One in class midterm, take home final, and a research project. As long as you do the reading and come to class you'll be fine. She makes things really clear. She's also super helpful! We often got out of class early.
Incredible prof. who clearly is knowledgeable in linguistics! The class was heavy in reading but they were fun. She provides questions for the readings so fill them out because they'll be discussed in class & will help you for the midterm/final. There is a research/group project but it wasn't too bad. This class was fun and Prof. Mathis was great!
Overall easy class, lots of readings just keep up with them cause midterm and final asks true and false questions about the readings. Just pay attention in class and keep up with the readings and you'll be fine. She also gave us a group projects. Only wrote one essay for the class
I loved Prof. Mathis, she was an amazing teacher. I had her for ENGL 305. She helps you if you need it, and I needed it. Just stay on top of the work, which wasnt overwhelming at all, and you'll do fine!
Taking a class with her was the worst decision I've ever made. If you don't understand her explanation from the first time, she becomes irritated/frustrated. I was lost off the bat and came to her for help, she said she answered my question in class and I needed to figure it out on my own. I felt lost and discarded. Not a good Professor! Stay away!
Her class was pretty straight forward, but with a lot of reading and class participation Final and midterm based on the readings and one research/group project towards the end.
Professor Mathis was great! This class was super fun, and although she can be randomly abrasive every once in awhile, she's funny and will definitely help you out if you need it. We had assigned reading for every class, but all the reading was interesting. Do the reading, participate in the class discussion and you'll be fine! Free e-textbook too!
Most caring professor I've encountered. Her classes require lots of readings, but she provides good articles. Grades are easy to catch just do the reading, complete her hw, and study for the Mid-Final. She can be a little shy at the beginning but once you know her you'll be tempted to take her again!
She's a great prof who really cares about her students. At first she seems aloof because she likes to stop and think about what she's going to say before she says it, but she's actually friendly and happy to discuss things or answer questions in & out of class. Her classes are heavy on reading & discussion but she provides the articles, no book.
Fantastic professor! She is very organized in the way she conducts class, and clearly lays out which assignments are due by next class. Extra credit is given on many of the quizzes throughout the semester. She is super nice and helpful. I plan to take an extra Linguistics class just to have her again.
This class is totally difficult if you don't study. SHE MADE ME WORK! BROKE A SWEAT IN HER CLASS! She shows if she's stressed out with you but only if she knows you did not study or do the work. DO THE WORK BEFORE CLASS! Once you start understanding the work and lectures she is your number one supporter. She respects responsible college students.
she is very intimidating! but she is very kind and cares for you to learn! the only main issue about the way she teaches is that she unintentionally confuses you! once you understand something try your best to yes listen to what she says but once you feel confused just filter out what she's saying and do your work! its not hard but it is confusing
The subject is interesting and Professor Mathis is pretty wonderful. Do the reading and participate in discussions and you'll do well. There is one group project.
I've taken her quite a few times for my LING major (300 & 310) and I will say she does come off as intimidating. This is especially true when you are working on a practice exercise and she's passing by looking over your shoulder to see if you're doing a problem correctly. Do well on the hw and study for the midterm & final and you're good.
Intimidating but a very great professor! Made this class easy to understand
I'm so scared. I think I'm going to fail her class. I had an A but I messed up on two of my assignments and now I have a B. She is a tough grader; very picky. She will mark down for literally anything. When she makes her critiques, mostly irrelevant. I think she just wants to take points off sometimes :'(
Professor Mathis is hands down one of the best professors at CSUN. She can be a bit serious at times, but honestly she's really caring and is there for you. Attend class and participate, oh and really read the material before class sessions she gives short quizzes. Readings do prepare you for class discussions.
Susan is very particular with the way she likes her assignments done. It's her way or the highway- no ifs, ands, or buts. I know some people liked her, but I wasn't really that fond of her. I wish I had a different linguistics teacher.
Do not recommend this instructor. Tests did not reflect the lectures or class practices and were much harder than what she taught in class. Her lectures are confusing and her scribble on the white board makes the material difficult to understand. She gives a false sense of hope that she cares about her students.
She has high standards and criteria, especially for exams. As a person, she is sweet, sensible but at times, a bit too serious. No doubt, she is concerned about her students' success.
Class is easy with solid knowledge of the English language, like scored well in the English SAT. If Eng. is your 2nd lang. it will be tough. Pros - 60% is Homework (7 HW's, lowest dropped, easy to do, work in a group) 20% midterm: was difficult b/c I didn't put in time. 20% final: gives text ahead of time for student to break down.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! She might be a sweet lady but wow she doesn't care what so ever about your grade. She grades stuff super hard even when you try to do your best. This is a Ling class so I thought she might be okay with me writing my papers with complex vocabulary, but of course she HAD to mark points off for that.
Terrie Mathis actually helped me love Linguistics! She made it so interesting. I do admit though ,she is a tough grader in homework, test, and the one group projects (talking about dialects within the U.S.); but it is definitely doable. Although she is a very mellow professor, she can be really fun!
I liked her class. The 9 HWs are worth 65% of your grade, and they're fairly easy to do if you actively read the assigned material for each one. Beware, she is a super tough grader. Gives good feedback even with a good grade. Her lectures were terribly boring, but she answers questions and guides you through them when you're confused.
Prof. Mathis made me appreciate linguistics. She IS a tough grader, but it's an upper division class, so you can't expect any less. As long as you do well on the homework and final paper, you can bomb the final and still keep a high grade. She's sweet, understanding when you let her know with time, and responds to emails super quickly.
Sometimes lectures can get a little boring, but I loved this professor and the material was very interesting. As long as you participate, the class will run smoothly. I went to class every day, totally understood the homework and she was super nice to me. I would recommend this class and professor.
Professor Mathis really cares about her students and it is evident in her teaching. She never assigned excessive amounts of work and I highly recommend utilizing her office hours and email. Do the work and ask questions and you should have no problems doing well in the class.
You should be able to pass if you actually do the readings and homework. Going to her class helps clarify more complicated topics, however, she's unbelievably boring and even seems to lose focus at times. She's a tough grader; takes off points if you don't think the same way she does, or takes off points for really trivial reasons. Don't take.
This professor is by far one of the worst professors. She only believes that her way is the correct way so if you say something opposite from what she believes in. You already get deducted by 15 to 20 points on assignments. I would most definitely not recommend her at all. This class was supposed to be fun however, now I am miserable.
If you can handle receiving rude, condescending comments, go ahead and take this class. Professor Mathis will make you feel like a complete idiot if you answer questions incorrectly (funny enough, she said English teachers are the least judgmental type of teachers HA!) She has, by far, been the rudest professor I have had so far. TERRIBLE!
Makes you think.
Dr. Mathis is incredible. In class and out. Her lectures are so clear, relatable, and thorough, she made me appreciate the English language (which I always hated) a lot! She helped me immensely outside of class, not just with class content, but with other opportunities like job applications and resumes. I owe a great deal to her & truly admire her
Dr. Mathis is incredible. This class teaches you a lot about the law that every citizen should know! She makes it relatable and very fascinating. She puts in a lot of effort and is extremely available and willing to help students outside of class. She shows that she cares deeply about her students' success. I can't recommend her highly enough!
Amazing professor. Dr. Mathis is very kind and knowledgeable in Linguistics. Her lectures are very interesting and informative. Not an easy class, but she is very understanding and flexible. & Participation matters!
she gives you weekly packets and tells you to do them in class and then answers questions that you may have. She also is a very tough grader, and assigns homework worth a very large percent so if you do bad it makes it hard to raise your grade. No extra credit opportunities given. I would take this course with a different professor if possible.
I've taken multiple classes with Dr. Mathis and she has always been incredibly gracious, caring, generous, and friendly. I couldn't recommend her highly enough as a professor and a person. If you have to take this class for another major like child development or liberal studies, expect to receive a lot of actual linguistic theory, and participate!
Professor Mathis was an excellent professor for Ling 310. She gave thorough feedback on assignments which really helped me improve my writing skills. This class wasn't necessarily difficult, but you definitely can't just kick back and get an A for nothing. I highly recommend her as a professor and really enjoyed her class.
If this is not your major do yourself a favor & take a different class. Effort does not count in this class. If your answer is not exactly the way she likes it you will get a huge point deduction each time. She writes the most bland 1-3 word explanations as to why. You will not learn anything all you do is read articles & answer questions on them.
All the content the professor provided was SUPER complex and long. If she didn't like your answer to open ended questions she took points off. She always left feedback but seemed kind of rude about it. Even though she is difficult you can definitely pass the class as long as you're consistent and answer questions thoroughly.
I took LING 325 asynchronous online with Dr. Mathis. It's a whole lot of reading and homework, but it isn't super hard or anything, and she's a fairly generous grader. Basically no tests. She's very accessible and offers helpful office hours, and if you meet her in person, she's super kind, funny, and caring. Really delightful.
You need to show up to class if you want to be able to keep up. This course had little online resources to check if you work was correct, the tests are not multiple choice so you need to have a good understanding what the answer is.
Professor Mathis is seriously one of of the best professors at CSUN. ENGL 303 is an extremely difficult class but she helps so much. She is the most understanding professor I have ever encountered and cares so much about her students. Attendance isn't mandatory which was such a relief in case of emergency! Couldn't reccomend her more!
Lotssss of reading! Wording in the articles provided can sometimes get a little tricky, as long as you give yourself enough time to complete the assignments, this is a super easy class.
She is very rude when you don't understand, gives you no opportunity to try to salvage your grade in the beginning of the semester if you don't do well from the beginning she doesn't care about you or you trying. I don't know how she has any good reviews..believe these bad reviews.
If you have other classes if you want to leave early SHE WONT Don't take this class
I enjoyed this class a lot! A ton of reading and writing, but interesting. Professor Mathis is very accessible and gives good constructive feedback. The best way to tackle this class is to start the reading early because you can't really answer the questions without an understanding of the text, and it's too much to leave for last minute.
She doesn't have her students best interest. Very discouraging. Grades extremely hard, leaves lots of comments. Your best work isn't good enough for her you need to BE her to pass. DONT MISS ANY ASSIGNMENTS.
The assignments are tedious most taking me around 4 hours. You do need to read and fully understand the sources or she will notice if you just skimmed. She is a pretty tough grader but she gives very detailed feedback which does help improve your writing. I learned a lot in this class.
LING 325 is a challenging course with a lot of reading and writing. Professor Mathis provides detailed feedback, but can be quite demanding. The best approach is to start assignments early and use resources like Unstuck study to supplement your study prep.
Wouldn't recommend unless you're ready to stress over every detail. She's extremely strict, demanding, and nitpicky.. Missing comma? -5. No space? -5. Doesn't accept late work or revisions easily. So because of that, feedback wasn't helpful, just points off. Only class I got a C in at CSUN (I'm a senior). She's precise, but it can be overwhelming.
I'm convinced the good reviews aren't from real students. She's extremely demanding and grades based on unclear, specific criteria. If you don't meet her expectations early, she'll hold it against you all semester. Not flexible and not willing to work with students trying to improve. She made it clear that she does not accept revisions or late work
The way she catches an attitude when you don't understand the work, or how quickly she'll fail you for not meeting her super specific, very high standards - should honestly be studied. There's zero room for error, and barely any room for creativity. It feels more about control than learning! would not recommend .
I don't understand the good reviews. This professor shows little care for students wellbeing or success. No revisions allowed, grading is harsh with no room for error, and the class lacked real learning. Felt extremely stressful. I would not take her again nor recommend her. Read the reviews carefully! This class was a waste of time and energy.
