HARD TO UNDERSTAND!!!
nice guy
This professor does not teach well. He stands in front of a room, reads off a power point presentation that (anyone is capable of doing)and does not allow sufficient time to take notes.
he is soo not helpful and he is very unclear and confusing
Terribly unorganized, not a good teacher for lab at all.
Very intelligent, but does not convey ideas well. I actually corrected him on molarity and formula weights twice! Poorly organized! If you love Chemistry, you will like him because of his background and knowledge, if not stay away.
he knows his stuff, he just doesn't teach it very well, he can be confusing if you don't know what he's trying to say
not helpful. gives way too much work for a 1-credit lab. i made an appt. with him to go over my final grade and he stood me up twice. very unprofessional.
Dr. Brack is unclear in his teaching methods. It takes 4 hours to complete an examination. He doesn't teach the material and then expects us to know it.
This guy flat out sucks. He is the worst professor i have ever had the misfortune of having. He should be fired.......this guy is horrible.
Clearly doesn't like teaching. Very unprepared for class. Constant mistakes are very distracting. Comes late and talks fast but doesn't cover very much. Taught 1/10 of the class material in the last 40 min of class. No excuse for this!
He makes you think and understand the material
doesnt teach the material well. makes too many mistakes to be able to follow what was supposed to be correct. writes confusing bumbled notes on the board and then erases certain sections before he even gets out of the way for you to copy. un neat writing
He is the worst professor I've ever had-very unorganized- gets confused with what he says, can't teach and taught us half of the final material the last day of class-overall horrible teacher-stay FAR away as possible
Dr Brack is a horrible chemistry teacher. Not only is he extremely boring but he has no idea what he is doing. You might as well teach the class yourself. He is extremely unsure of himself and the test contain information that he never teaches. STAY AWAY
Clear, uses powerpoint, very helpful. If I could only go back and take the CHEM 3A with him... I'm sure it was better.
Boring!!
He's incredibly disorganized. He confuses himself during lectures and hesitates a lot. He seems to know the material but cannot articulate it well. He's very insensitive to students. He's unprofessional,absent-minded,condescending, rude, and he gives way too much work for a one credit lab.
Confusing, and not funny.
He knows the material but isn't good at teaching it! He will help you if you ask for it but again the explaination are drawn out and confusing. Avoid if possible.
he likes to talk and make jokes that aren't funny...will help if u ask...all around easy class though
I felt Brack was very helpful, understanding and fair. From what I can read hes no good for lecture but hes great for lab.
Butchers science -> I wanted to commit suicide in the class; when writes problems, the boards are messy; doesn't go over HW problems; never learned stuff on tests; unclear; boring (stopped paying attention, others slept); powerpoint=bad lecture; huge curves b/c can't teach; ONLINE quizes to take during MY OWN time? Should teach it myself. STAY AWAY
It sounds like he is not a good lecture teacher - but he was great for lab. Always there to help, you just have to approach him. Easy grader...but he has to see you putting forth effort...
Ok everyone who thinks brack is a bad teacher...Chemistry is hard in general so it takes more than just going to lecture, and he does go over hw questions if you ask him 2, most teachers dont go over all hw problems considering almost all the answers are in the bak of the book- I had a horrrrible chem 3 teacher so trust me...brack is so much better! if you go to him he's more than happy to help...i loved him...he is one of the better chem teachers at hofstra...not the best one - but deff not the worst
many easy group quizzes and take home quizes. Huge curve. Nice guy. I dont understand why everyone has a problem with him. He's great.
He is an excellent teacher and really knows his stuff. He's a walking encyclopedia. Good guy and great teacher.
Prof. Terry is awesome!! He is ssooo smart and tries soo hard to make his students wana learn and pass. He gives a hugeee curve and his exams are questions you've done before with different numbers. He never ever gives up with you and tries his hardest so you learn everything. He also make class funny so you'll have fun.
teaches from powerpoint so he's lazy
hes very intelligent huge curve thats because avrage class grade was a 35 but cant teach for his life gets confuse with what he is saying makes a lot of errors in the questions he does on the board so he goes back and fourth erasing ull fall asleep in class boring not clear lecturer and lazy all i have to say is powerpoint and doesnt prepare lectur
His a very good teacher, but never try to miss any of his lectures because skipping Dr. Brack's classes could get you out of status. Even though he teaches with powerpoint, i must confess that his explanations are very clear and you could also feel free to ask him questions in class. I really recommend him for students majoring in chemistry.
Taking Physical Chemistry with this man was one of the biggest mistakes i had to make. He beats around the bush all the time. Shows up to clss 20-30 min late for a 55 min class. Doesnt answer questions, and when he does it takes 15 min to answer it. in one semester, instead of covering all 25 CH we coverd 15
Come prepared to class with a full course meal for this professor along with a textbook and a noose. It is too difficult to put this class into words. Basically his test questions are nowhere to be found in the textbook. Rude discouraging and condescending. Whispers as he clicks through the powerpoint presentation and gets extremely angryifudntshow
The worst teacher I have had at Hofstra University. His "classes" are entirely based on PowerPoint presentations prepared by the textbook's publishers. The tests are heavily curved because no one learns anything. The average for most tests was 50%. Avoid this professor unless you enjoy learning everything on your own.
Just atrocious. Completely incomprehensible. I tried desperately to understand what was going on. I left the class often befuddled and he helped little. He is one of those professors who REALLY enjoys weeding out the "weak" links. 25pts+ curve should give an indication of how impossible Brack is, due to sheer laziness, pomposity, or both.
Dr. Brack is the worst professor I've had at Hofstra. He stands at the board and talks to himself, he cannot TEACH for his life. You pay $3500 to teach yourself. Good luck! Let's just say all my test grades were 50's and one 73 and i got a C+, the curve is ridic. Go to him after a test & he wil prob give extra pts ;)
It's annoying b/c he's really all over the place in lecture, but could be much worse as far as grades go. You pretty much have to teach yourself from the text and the homework problems, but if you do that you can do very well in the class. Tests aren't horrible if you spend time teaching yourself & practicing. Nice guy, but really useless lectures.
well what to say...extremely boring and will talk for about an hour while everyone else stares into space and texts. he will help u but will probably forget your appointment with him. mumbles. always on his phone. there are better professors for 3B lab.
Let's see here...quite possibly the worst experience I've had a Hofstra thus far. Don't even bother worrying about the lectures because the tests have nothing to do with them. He has a good curve, but you will learn nothing is this class. Don't get stuck with him..wait until someone else teaches it!!!
I took a whole year of chemistry with him. I found him to be a very good teacher. His lectures were clear and interesting. As for the exams, he asks you to use what you know and apply it to interesting problems. If you just memorized the work and can't use it to think, you probably don't like his exams.
He teaches straight off of a power point and puts them online, lectures dont really help at all and are mainly a waste of time, test are difficult and not normally on what he said they would be on, the only positive is that he has a good curve.Unless you like to learn on your own wait for a different option if possible
What a WASTE of Time & Money! DO NOT TAKE him for Chem 3A or any other Chem classes. Goes 100mph in class as if you knew this stuff of over 30 years as he did. DO NOT go to the extra credit he offer's. Never gives you the credit for them. Teaches only power point, and very few examples on the board. When he does, again, 1 or 2 problems, that's it.
Succinctly put, the worst professor I've ever had. Don't get me wrong, he's a decent enough guy and very intelligent, but can't teach for his life! He seems to put very little effort into his lectures. He doesn't explain things well, and when he does attempt to explain things, he makes the concepts more confusing. Take his class if you want to
If you can avoid taking a class with him, do so. He is very unclear about the material he teaches, uses powerpoint slides given to him from the company that makes our textbooks and expects everybody to know exactly what he's talking about when we are all clueless.
THE WORST! AVOID!
Coming to class was very boring it hard to pay attention to power points which rarely helped for tests. He curves at the end of the semester. I got an A but to do well on tests I recommend doing as many owl problems as possible and the extra credits, look over the textbook, tests are not that difficult just study the right material and go to class!
You cannot teach a whole chem class with math problem off of PowerPoint and this he exactly what he does sits on a stool in front of class and clicks away very lazy and unhelpful
The most horrible teacher that I have ever had. He has no idea what he is ever talking about, he comes to class almost a half hour late every day and then rambles on in his monotone voice about his powerpoints. You cant learn chemistry through math problems on a powerpoint! He is an idiot and I have no idea how he could still have a job teaching.
had him for lab, always used up the whole 3 hours. he would explain for an hour and then let us do our experiment. overall he was fine but he did grade sort of hard on the labs sometimes. nice guy to talk to and answers questions well when asked.just do your labs and try to get low % errors. his quizzes(3)were very tough though but the finals easy
He is not so bad!!! like any other chem class, you need to study on your own to master such subject. Very very sweet, but he is very monotone and reads from the slides, which makes it hard. But hes willing to help anyone & gives worksheets w/ problems as a review before the test (which is the same). DO your owls ( practice problems) and you'll pass.
He's very boring. Not nice when u talk to him 1 on 1. If something is wrong with your OWLs (Online homework) he doesn't care & tells you other assignments will make up for it. PPT slides don't really help. I had to beg him to switch my Chem final for other reasons b/c he wouldn't do it. Good thing is that the test review is similar to the test.
He is so bad. He taught the class to students who already had taken AP Chem. I did all the homework and still had little idea what was going on. He gives test reviews that are similar to the test, but they only really help with half of the tests. I was studious, but every moment of class and testing was agony. He was awful.
He is a very nice guy but has no idea what he is talking about. He is a very smart person but cant teach a class for his life. Thank God there was owl or the entire class would fail. He doesnt curve unless the average is extremely terrible and anyone who takes him, prepare to study college level chemistry on your own.
Very nice guy but is a terrible professor. He doesn't know how to teach at all. Very very hard class. It is definitely doable if you work extremely hard. But you have to understand that coming to class will not help at all. You learn nothing in lecture. You have to go home and study for hours and hours on your own.
I failed last Spring. Have to take it over this Spring & unfortunately he's the only teacher again!
I've heard absolutely terrible things about him for lecture, but Brack is AWESOME for lab. He grades VERY leniently on labs, will hold your hand through any experiment, let you turn things in late, etc. I would definitely take him for lab again.
THE BEST great curve after half the class fails and just ask him questions in office hours
OWLS sums up how he teaches horrific grading policy exams are literally the online problems but condensed within an hour therefore no one can complete his exams efficiently on time. VERY BAD!!! AVOID
Even though I recieved an A, I have to say that Dr. Brack was a terrible teacher. I had to learn everything on my own using OWL. Even though I hated OWL, it was more help then him. If there is a choice, do not take him. Extremely hard exams for no reason. Only curves a little bit. It was extremely stressful to be in his class.
Dr. Brack is a nice person. The material he teaches is not all that interesting, unless you are really into physics. The quizzes are are straight forward. Make sure to show up to class and do the homework, because it does help with the exams.
Definitely an intelligent person, but tends to look down on students that struggle in the class. Seems to care at least a tad about students. Lectures are basically pointless, reads off of the slides. Have to teach yourself with the online textbook which is awful. Take another professor if you can.
Probably one of the worst professors I've ever had. Attending class is pointless because he teaches off of slides that he has already given you. Quizzes are extremely hard because he has no idea what homework he's assigning (separate website work), so homework will not prepare you for them. Try to get into someone else's class if possible.
Brack is actually a really nice guy. He tells a lot of really corny jokes. He knows a lot of information but can't teach very well! All of the homework is online its a pain to do but it should be done, to help your overall average. Tests are so long and hard but he usually has to give extra time. You will be teaching yourself
Brack is nice but his tests are really long and very hard. There are 4 exams and homework in online textbook due every week. All the tests are curved including the final which helps a lot. Do the online homework, if he see you do it you'll get extra points. He doesn't teach much you mostly learn from hw.
Hes a nice guy but he usually just ends up teaching him self because he doesn't do the best job at explaining things. He has office hours available so if you need more explanation on things you should definitely go there. His tests can be very long and hard but the grades are curved. Do the online homework because that is used as extra credit!!
Dr. Brack is not an easy professor -- but he is fair. DO THE ONLINE HOMEWORK -- this is you life saver. It helps you learn the material. He gives extra credit if he sees that you attempt them. Tests are long, but again -- if you can do the online homework. It should be no problem. Test topics are handed out beforehand.
As a professor this guy is awful, lectures are all over the place, he's always being corrected by students or correcting himself. Extremely unhelpful too, I had a problem with OWL and he told me to contact the website who then told me to contact my professor! Honestly just do all your homework and the extra credits, the curve is ridiculous
Very tough class, he is not bad personally though, you must study a lot.
Wastes time in class by giving science history stories. Barely does in class examples to show how to solve problems so you have to teach yourself. Will confuse you. Online hw is OWL w/ 70 questions per chapter and he expects you to do them all. Avoid, take someone else. Retaking the class with old notes so that's the only reason I'm doing well.
Wastes time in class to tell random stories and he does not show too many examples on how to solve problems, so teaching yourself is a must. Hw is OWL that has about 70 questions per chapter, which you should complete in its entirety because it helps boost your grade. Should've gotten a D+ but got a B with the curve and by doing the OWL. Avoid him
Avoid if you can, that's the best advice that can be given
Don't take him. He's awful
I honestly am not quite sure why Professor Brack has such low ratings on here... I had him for Gen Chem II Lab and I thought he was great - he was very fair with grading, was always available to help in office hours and was nice when he came over and spoke to us while we were doing labs. I'd recommend taking him for lab if you're willing to work.
I had Dr. Brack for Gen Chem I Lab, and he wasn't bad at all. He was a very lenient grader, and he would answer any question you had without being condescending. He does ramble on a bit as he explains the lab beforehand, but as long as you read the directions in the lab manual as you do the experiments, you'll be fine. Pretty easy A.
Dr. Brack is really nice if he likes you. But he is a terrible teacher. He doesn't know how to properly explain anything and always makes mistakes that he barely ever explains. He isn't cut out to be a teacher at all. Also I had to chase him down to find him during his office hours because he was never in his office.
by far the worst professor at hofstra. Cancels class alot, mumbles soooo bad, thinks hes funny but hes not, gives you hard questions youve never done on exams, and does not make himself accessible to students AT ALL.. barely answers emails half the time. Ended up with B+ only because of online questions (OWL). do not take!!!!!!
Please take this review in consideration. Dr. Brack's lecture were very difficult, I had to learn college chem by myself. However, he is a fair grader and is reasonable to move exams dates. Dr. Brack even gave us the option to do a take home test. Do your sapling and try your best on exams because he does curve heavy.
He's just not meant to teach. He knows his material but terrible at explaining. He makes the material more confusing than it needs to be. Read the book, only way to learn in his class. The way he words exams are confusing and is nothing like the problems he does in class, if he did any at all! Avoid him if you can.
He spent so long talking to us at the beginning of the lab, it took forever until we could start but then he would try to rush us through the experiments so we wouldn't run late. Got distracted easily and would get off topic. But, he was really chill if you messed something up and worked with you to fix it and was a really lenient grader.
professor brack is an amazing professor. He is very knowledgable on the material, is very funny and also very caring and helpful with the students for whatever they may need. I highly recommend him
His lab is really easy. I've heard he's not great at lecture, but for lab he is my favorite (taking him again next semester). He tells you how to do everything beforehand and barely takes off points for incorrect values. He plays music sometimes and leaves during some lectures. He is funny and very lovable. Definitely take him for lab if you can!
Good for lecture. He is very relaxed and a very fair grader. Office hours are helpful. Not good for lecture since his tests are hard!!
Worst Professor I have ever taken. This professor does not care about the students, only his ego. He practically wants you to fail. I am a good student and had to go to outside help for his Gen Chem 2 class. Unless you are a genius do not take him, you will get nothing from him
Took this class during Summer session at Hofstra. Expected to be fast paced, but Brack makes it boring as hell. His monotone voice is the worst. Our grade was based entirely on our test grades and he did not prepare us for the ACS exam at all. The final was such a shock. The tests were very similar to his class handouts and problems in class.
Class averages are super low because he's not the best at lecturing. It's a self-taught class, basically because of the fact that he will either spend a lot of time on one topic or breeze over an important one. He's super nice, though, but it's a stressful course to try and pass.
Will leave you in the dark about your grade the whole semester with approximations. Nothing he teaches will come close to preparing you for the final. Curve has been said to be historically big, but whether or not it will prepare you for the next chemistry course is really a hard trade off. He obviously knows his stuff, but the class is rushed.
Attending this professor's lectures is useless, you won't learn anything. He shamelessly will mock students about their grades. Don't bother studying for his exams either, he fills them with questions you've never seen before and you won't begin to know how to answer. Visit him during office hours or ask for help? He refuses to help you. Good luck!
Don't bother attending lecture you don't really learn anything. Lost our exams TWICE during the semester and we had to retake them. A lot of material is on each test and he wants you to memorize all the formulas. Do the sapling HW it will boost your grade. Doesn't know how to apply what he is teaching and simply spits material at you. Don't take!!
Is not the best professor the Chemistry department has to offer. He messed up my final grade and I had to email him just to get him to fix it. Does not answer emails that often and you can tell he would rather be anywhere else than teaching chemistry. Rambles a lot in his lectures and you don't really learn much. Is a nice man, horrible professor.
Don't take this class if you can't teach yourself all the material. Lectures are heinously disorganized and he often forgets his point mid-sentence. Learned the same amount attending his classes as I would by not going. The only way I stayed afloat in his class was with outside tutoring. Generous grading scale but it's not really beneficial.
Don't take his class, it's not worth it! Tests are incredibly hard, so there is a huge curve. His lectures are all over the place, so if you end up taking chemistry with this professor, you may have to teach yourself all the material. Avoid him like the plague!
He is a very nice man, lectures with him are long and tests are hard but labs with him are easy
Horrible professor. So many wrong formulas and errors in his quizzes. Also his quiz questions were so unclear. Class was supposed to be online, not asynchronous but he gave us tons of voicethreads at short notice. He was very unorganized and when he did actually lecture during class time we could barely read his writing. He is very boring too.
Do yourself a favor and don't take his class. He's a very sweet man but you will learn nothing from his lectures or his prerecorded lectures. The quizzes and final are all difficult since you will be teaching yourself most of the material. Participation is 40% of your final grade so it's not impossible to pass but if you want an A good luck.
Lectures were always super unclear, as he would often get off topic and ramble about things that had nothing to do with the class. As others mentioned, he had a generous curve but it was because a majority of the course was not performing well without it. Would not recommend his class at all! Taking his course over Zoom made things even worse.
