I took this class last semester and all I can remember is being incredibly bored. Church is a great guy, but there is far too much meaningless content within his lecture slides. Content is pretty cool but is easy to confuse drug use amongst various eras. He also wouldn't round my grade up, even though it was .01 away from a higher letter grade :/
Mediocre is the best word I can use to describe this class. The lectures were ridiculously boring and really droned on. I wouldnt take it at all, it is so boring, but it wasnt hard... It was a waste of time but that is theme with most GEs in this school. If you respect your time dont take !
Church is a really timid guy and it's funny seeing his awkwardness while lecturing. Grade is based off of 4 short response papers, short quizzes, midterm, & final. Have perfect grammar or else points off papers. No need to do readings or buy textbook. He'd tell us what WASN'T going to be on exams & then put that info on the tests... beware.
Dr. Church helped me out during a rough point in my life. He was understanding and helped make sure I did not fail. His class has a lot of content and he helped me study better for the exam. There have been few profs at USC that were as caring or understanding.
Dr. Church made learning about drugs fun! He does have some uncle jokes, but it works for him.
Church does a lot of lecturing. Understandable with a GE class. Willing to answer questions after class. Responds to email quickly.
Dr. Church helped me with career options. Was always willing to listen and provides good advice. Need to have more profs like him.
Dr. Church has been amazing during COVID. He has made his on line lectures fun and has personally reached out to make sure I was doing well. He is not like other professors at USC. He really cares.
Church has been really great online. He has been very fair in grading.
Dr. Church went above and beyond. He really cares about his students and their well-being. He has reached out to the entire class at least weekly during isolation to check up on us. None of my other professors checked on me.
While this course requires quite a bit of effort on the student's part (four 2-page lecture summaries, mountains of obscure vocab words to memorize, handful of quizzes, pretty difficult midterm+final) to get an A, the workload is manageable and Dr. Church's lectures were EXTREMELY organized + had humor sprinkled throughout. Textbook is useless.
Very informative, and so consistently good at replying to emails quickly throughout the semester. Very positive experience in this class.
He is one of the best professors I have had at USC. He is so kind and understanding, and also is very organized and teaches the subject extremely well.
Professor Church was great! I really enjoyed his lectures every class and he made the class interesting and fun!
Professor Church made every single lecture interesting and thought provoking. This course truly taught me more than I could learn by myself, and it was a pleasure to spend class time learning from Dr. Church!
I loved everything about this course. I was thrilled to be able to write about my own lecture and then present it, and it enabled me to explore other aspects of the lecture that I was curious about. Each lecture was so interesting and HELPFUL. Each student should take this course just to be knowledgeable about substances and their harms.
Dr. Church made everything we learned in this class so applicable to the real world. The information I have learned through this course has sparked many interesting conversations with my friends and I, even outside of class. It has been my favorite RXRS course I have taken in my time here at USC so far thank you so much!
Very intriguing and fascinating lectures compared to other professors.
I enjoyed taking class with Dr. Church. He made it super interactive and fun. I have a better understanding of Clinical Trial Management now.
Dr. Church is a very friendly and approachable professor. We need more professors who are relatable and willing to talk with students about their concerns.
This man is a real gem! He is superbly sweet, encouraging and really wants the best for his students. Even topics which can typically be boring are made immensely interesting by him. The assignments are relatively easy to score in and he gives tremendous details and insight on how to do well and enjoy the course.
When I enrolled in the ethics class, I thought I had a good idea of what ethics were. Thanks to Dr. Church, I have learned how difficult and deep ethics in healthcare really is. We have weekly debates where the students select the topic and it really reinforces what we have learned. Great class!!
Professor Church was the best! He made every lecture super engaging and full of really interesting information. You have to write 4 total papers each being 2 pages for any lecture week you choose then a midterm and final. If you pay attention and show up you'll be fine.
I just finished the final for this class. I kept having technical problems and blackboard kept kicking me out. Dr. Church helped walk me through the errors and even was available after hours to make sure I was able to finish. He really does care about his students!
Professor Church is one of the best instructors I've ever had at USC. He genuinely cares about his students and is very understanding when life circumstances interrupt coursework. Professor Church genuinely wants his students to succeed and he makes every effort to make the proper materials available to help his students do well in his class.
I loved taking this class! By far my favorite GE I've taken at USC so far. Terry is amazing and extremely informed, and is both a fun and clear lecturer. I am looking into taking another class with Terry next fall when I have a more open schedule because I found this class so interesting.
I had a very troubling time adjusting to online courses, which resulted in a rocky start to my attendance in many of my classes. Dr. Church was extremely understanding of my ongoing complications and helpful in getting me back on back on track and I can not thank him enough!
Professor Church was very accommodating. I transferred into his class a few weeks into the semester and he was very patient with me during the process, answering numerous emails (very quickly might I add), and encouraging me throughout the semester.
Dr. Church really helped me out during a difficult time. He was understanding and valued my well being over the quiz and writing assignment I missed. He gave me the opportunity to make-up the missed items when I had recovered. No other professor I have is as understanding. He even contacted me to make sure I was doing ok.
This course is one of the best ive ever taken. His lectures are always truly interesting, and he always makes an effort to include multiple perspectives (LGBTQ+, minorities, etc) which I loved. The in class assignments are surprisingly, very fun and the exams are pretty easy. Overall and amazing course, wish I could take it again!
This is the first class I have taken that covers people of color, gays, and women throughout history. Prof. Church brings history to life and makes it feel real. He will answer questions any questions you have about drugs. He is one of the few profs I have that asks how we are doing and really is interested. He makes his lectures fun.
Church was an absolute godsend. Hands down one of the few professors in college I had that not only had quality lectures but also cared about the well-being of his students. An absolute gem to the USC faculty and if I could take another one of his classes again, I would do so in a heartbeat.
I loved this class! Terry does an amazing job at incorporating different perspectives in his lectures including poc, women, and the LGBT community. He is very open minded and always seems to enjoy teaching. His lectures are interesting and very well explained. Few 2 page open concept essays & a few quizzes that weren't too difficult.
Professor Church really knows how to make lectures fun, never dreaded going to lectures. There are a few 2 page papers and quizzes but nothing difficult. I cannot recommend this class and this professor enough!!
Very chill/interesting prof. Lectures are posted so class isn't necessary but offers extra credit randomly to students in class. Random group projects + bi-weekly quizzes + 4 short essays w/ flexible topics + midterm and final exams. First half of material is boring but you need to study and second half is interesting but more common-sense-based
Professor Church is truly an amazing person. He cares for his students, and will do everything for them to pass. His lectures are interesting, and I definitely learned a lot (for just a GE). There's work, but it always turns out to be interesting. If you show you put in effort, you're sure to get a great grade!
Quiz was pretty hard but nice professor
This guy is amazing, one of my favorite professors by far at USC. He is extremely accomodating and really wants everyone to succeed. Quizzes are specific, but he essentially tells you what to study during lectures. There are no tricks in his exams, very clear and straightforward. Really recommend this guy for an easy A and a great lecture.
Love love love Professor Church. Super accommodating to missing certain assignment if let know ahead of time, including making up a midterm. Out of all the professors I had this semester, he was an outlier in making lectures fun and making sure students were learning instead of being stressed about his exams.
The lectures are fun and informative, not to mention that Professor Church has a great sense of humor and is genuinely accommodating to students. Be aware of the dates of the quizzes (but he points out specifically what will be on them so attend class)and in-class projects, otherwise, no complaints. Take this class :)
Professor Church is one of the most interesting lecturers I have had. The subject matter is really interesting and we don't go too far into the chemistry of the drugs for a pharmacy class. Honestly, my favorite class I took this semester. You'll do better if you attend class and there are very few assignments so do your best on all of them.
This class was a lot of fun. Interesting subject, since it combines pharmacy with journalism. Both profs are awesome and fun. 1 paper, 2 projects, lots of readings, and special guests. There's also quizzes, a midterm, and final. But it's really doable.
Dr. Church is the BEST professor I have had. He truly cares about what he teaches and he enjoys conversing with his students about the course material. He is very understanding and makes his class as stressless as possible. He is also very happy to talk to students outside of class about anything from course material to research opportunities.
If you have a chance to take Church, DO IT! He is so knowledgeable and his lectures are so interesting. I really am not the type to enjoy presentation slides, but he really made everything so funny and entertaining. Class has a lot of papers (graded pretty harshly), but Church tells you what to study to do well on the quizzes and tests. LOVE HIM!
Dr. Church was awesome! The class itself was very engaging, fun, and not hard at all. The content of the class was very useful for those going into various fields of medicine. The structure of the class was lecture on Mondays and then student presentation on Wednesdays and I found that to work very well. Overall, fun class and great professor!
Church is an absolute dog. He wants to help you and the class is very interesting. Take this class if you want an easy and engaging GE.
My heart feels full when I think about this class and the prof. Mans was funny, caring, compassionate, and understanding. Because of him and his temperament class was always so fun and Id feel mad guilty missing class. You'll feel like you wanna switch over to a pharmacy major bc of it. Topics were so interesting! THANK YOU DR. CHURCH FRRRRR
LOVE professor church. the class was very simple and his lectures were always enjoyable, not to mention his sense of humor is unmatched. I always felt bad if I ever missed his lectures. simple structure, two short papers, midterm & final, and a few easy in-class projects. going to miss this class a lot next year - truly a great GE and a great prof!
I love Dr. Church. Content was really interesting, but your essays and exams make or break you because there's not a lot in the gradebook. Tells you exactly what to expect on the exams and gives you easy in-class projects. He's amazing!!
Really interesting class but a lot of content. No homework, In-class assignments and papers were easy, but I thought the midterm was harder than expected. He tells you what to prepare for, but it's a decent amount of content to memorize. Super funny and great professor though, would highly recommend
Church is honestly one of the best teachers I have ever had. There are group projects that are usually completed in class. In addition, there are two papers that are super easy. The midterm and final are worth a lot and can be challenging but if you go to class Church literally tells you what to study. Highly recommend, Church is amazing!!
Professor Church is such a G honestly. Not only is the material fascinating, the guy teaching it is cool too. Group projects are done in class and they're actually fun. Best advice to those taking this course -- GO TO CLASS. Obviously you need to study but he'll tell you what will be on the test in lectures. 10/10 recommend for an exciting GE.
Church is a good guy but beware that if 2 of your classmates are caught cheating on your midterm the entire class will be punished. Four group projects in class, 2 short essays, 1 Midterm, and 1 Final. Study Guide for Midterm did not accurately represent what was on the exam. Quick to answer emails and very polite if you have any questions.
Terry is a great professor who adds humor to keep the class engaging, and the lecture content is very interesting! Though attendance is not mandatory, it is still important to go because he sometimes drops hints of which concepts will be on the midterm/final. Four easy in-class group projects, two reaction essays, one midterm, and one final.
He is a great professor who loves to joke in the lectures and ask questions to engage our participation. I learned a lot in this class. Make sure you come to class and write what he says because there are times the slides are not always what he wants us to remember.
This class is honestly one of the best I have taken at USC. There is a lot of material, but Church tells you a story each class. He is super caring, even though some jerks cheated on the midterm - he honestly cares about his students. Will take another class with him for sure!
This has been a very difficult semester and I have been dealing with a lot of family health issues and just general BS. I have Church for two classes and he goes out of his way to ask how I am doing, if my family is ok, and about my general well-being. He is the only professor I have who has checked up on me. He is a great guy!
I wasn't sure what to expect with a pharmacoethics class, but it was fascinating. Each week one class is lecture and the second class is group discussion of an ethics related topic. One of the most interesting discussions we had was on the circumcision of baby boys in the US. Very eye opening!
Dr. Church is my faculty mentor for my PharmD Scholarly Project. He has been instrumental in helping me develop a feasible research project, including applying for IRB approval. He has given me consistent and valuable feedback along the way. In addition, he has helped me develop a passion for research!
Great professor and this class is one of the most interesting ones I have taken at USC. The bonus points on our final as a gift was super nice.
Terry is the GOAT. Attendance is optional, but his lectures are amazing and he tells you what to study. Paying attention in class + doing the review sheets + following the essay rubric = A. Church is super understanding, very accessible outside of class and just a chill guy. He genuinely cares for students and wants them to succeed.
Interesting topic and great lecturer. Take notes and study and you'll do good on the two exams + 4 group projects and 2 essays. Only downside is two people cheated on the midterm and so there was no review for the final exam, which was all *written* with no multiple choice questions. Otherwise, great class and very considerate and sweet teacher.
Didn't want us to use I for starters in REACTION ESSAY but have our own argument/theme from the topic,in 3 pages. He had to give multiple rewrites to students with no clear rubric for them. Then an 11-page review with about 90 terms but then only having 15-22 on your tests at random from that list.Overall things could have just been done differently
As long as you put in the work, you'll be fine. Tests, essays, and group projects were manageable but could have used more clear instructions. The professor is very nice in person but he is known for being very passive aggressive and rude over email, so just talk to him in person if you have questions or concerns.
Prof Church is great. He makes himself very approachable and available whenever you need him. He's sweet and wants to see you succeed GENUINELY. His lectures are so interesting and there is minimal work for the class. That being said, I am not a good test taker and your grade is dependent on your ability. Still would 100% recommend.
Nice guy and cool topics but I don't recommend if you care a lot about getting an A. The margins are extremely thin and 1 missed citation could cost you a grade. Plus, the study guides are crazy long, and still he might ask something not on them. It's almost impossible to be 100% prepared for tests, but I made it through so you can still do well fs
The people who reviewed this class low, probably did not come to class and definitley did not listen in class. Church tells you exactly what to study during lecture, as long as you highlight the slide he says to know you will do fine. The group projects are fun and the prof is very easy to talk to about your work, the class, or life in general.
Did not reply to emails. Discussed in person twice but still didn't manage to regrade paper. Study guide given but something else popped up still. Impossible to be fully prepared for the exam yet grades are tight.
Church is one of the most genuine and caring professors I have had at USC. He has a dry humor and quick wit.
This is one of the most interesting classes I have had at USC! There are weekly lectures and then discussions and projects. Dr. Church encourages us to talk about addiction and relates what we are learning to real experiences. He gets us to think from different perspectives. He does tell a lot of dad jokes, but they are mostly funny.
It doesn't pertain to the professor but only to the class itself. The class was super messy and you never knew what you were supposed to do in the class. 2 presentations, a midterm, a final (+ a 6-page essay), and other essays sprinkled in throughout the semester. The extra pointless work was mostly assigned by the other professor. Church was good
Not great.
This has been my favorite class at USC so far. The content is dense, but Prof. Church teaches it in a way that makes it fun. He is willing to listen to concerns and is very fair in grading. If you show up, you do well in class. If you need to fulfill a GE, check this class out.
We did a really cool in-class project where we had to create our own fake medicine advertisement from the 1800s. We had to use lecture and textbook material to make the ad and then had to pitch it to the class. Very creative and really good way to get us to engage with the material.
Grades are extremely tight with no explanation on the essays.
Long lectures that are interesting but can get boring. Exams based on slide lectures but you never really know what topics are going to be on it, 2 essays and 1 group project as assignments. Overall an easy-going professor.
I loved Professor Church's class! A GE that was interesting and made me excited to go to class every day! He is very knowledgeable and interesting to hear speak. The one thing is the tests are wayyy harder than I anticipated.
easiest and best ge! prof is rly chill, has good humor. expectations are clear. 2 short exams, 2 short reflection pieces, 3 group projects + essay based final. he tells u exactly what u need to know for exams. if u care enough to learn and pay attention, u should be fine. not hard at all, just make note of what he tells u will be on the exams.
genuinely the best professor i've had at usc so far, his lectures are almost like story telling, the essays are quite short and easy and the grading was very fair. The tests were kind of challenging but all based off of the lectures. Had a great sense of humor and interacted well with his students, would highly recommend.
The best professor at USC, period. I would skip my bio and chem classes and still go to his lectures due to how fun they were. Very easy grader, for essays just follow the rubric and his instructions on syllabus and pay attention during his lectures because he practically tells u what u need for your exams, plus exams are online and final was fun.
This is not really an "easy GE" simply because you never know what's on the exams, and it's very wishful thinking that you can remember everything from 50+ slides from over 5 different weeks. The Prof. somehow has disillusioned himself into thinking his exams are not memory based but he wants students to know 70+ definitions and many many concepts.
This is one of the most interesting GE's I have taken. I do not like history but Dr. Church made it fun and interesting. If you go to class, he tells you exactly what slides to study for the exams. There are two writing assignments and a couple of projects. Kind of sad lecture is over... I am going to miss this class.
I was worried that this class would be all about the science behind addictive drugs. I am happy to say it was about science, sociology, economics, and culture. It touched on the way addictive substances impact people's lives on a daily basis. It made me really question my own beliefs about addiction and who addicted people are. Great class!
I'm a senior film major and yet this is still my favourite class I've ever taken at USC. He teaches you so much about different world cultures and the roles substances played in each of them throughout history in such an entertaining way. Was truly fascinating. Also god bless him for writing and uploading such thorough slideshows after every class.
He is actually such a fun professor! The class is based on weekly reflections and a final. Both things are graded easy. I promise you, if you go to lecture and discussion, and (sometimes) read the article, you will get an A! He is not that accessible out of lecture, but I doubt that you will really need to access him out of lecture.
prof church is an amazing person but the class is def heavy work. u need to remember a lot of details from lectures that are 60 slides per day for the test. not an easy class to get an A in unless u study really hard but for a GE its not worth it. some interesting topics but sleepy class sometimes.
He was great, but this class has so much content, and if your major is already content-heavy, I wouldn't take this class as a GE. It was interesting and fun, but there are about 60 slides each week (both M and W), and it's just A LOT of studying. He does tell you what will be on there. If you don't have the time to study, don't take this as a GE.
Great guy, amazing professor! He tells us what's going to be on the exams during class. This is a hard GE. So much content, memorization and studying. Take advantage of office hours! He is a very nice guy and will help you if you ask. We also have two essays and group presentations. Overall, not that bad of a class, just a lot of content!
wonderful class! Dr. Church is so kind and accommodating. highly recommend taking if you want a thought-provoking, relatively low stress class.
