Passionate and knowledgeable about his topic, strives for obj. despite bias
best ever. this guy is brilliant.
GREAT PROF, GOOD TASTE IN TUNES
clear, concise and knowledgeable; doesn't treat us like we're two year olds; easy-going and approachable
No Comments
He was great, supportive and amazing for a first year class...i recommend any class he's teaching!
Terry is taught the first half of lectures very clearly, and has been an excellent TA all year long. He helps when I need it, and frequently attends College Council meetings, where he always has something witty and relevant to say.
they don't come cooler than T.C.! This guy even owns goats fer christs sake!
The best prof I've had, he's really helpful and understanding. Give a lot of interesting examples, good class.
Awsome teacher/TA. The best at McGlauclin, and the best at York. This is why I pay 5 grand a year. I loved his stories about trips/everything. They dont come much cooler that T.C.
Ewwwww, all these raters must be first year students or something. He might be easy and nice or what not, but he definetely does not teach much in his lectures. I had him for summer school though so who knows, but you don't even have to go to class he seriously does not do much.
He is really intelligent however there is something about him that I just don't like but I cannot place him, hes got good stories and seems fair but still there is something i wanna figure it out but can't, Loved the stories with about the Goats kind of bizarre

Terry is very approachable, and always willing to help. His course is dense, with TONS of material to cover, however, his teaching style allowed this material to flow with relative ease. I'd take another course with him any day! The goat stories were cool too!
He's SUCH a nice prof. Great guy, but his lectures are sometimes hard to keep up with. The course is very dense.
Excellent T.A. Very helpful and understanding in situations beyond control. Always available to assist. He's also very in tuned with the here and now and also the past. Tells great stories with relevance. The best T.A. I had in my first year.
Prof. Conlin was excellent. His teaching method was very effective, the course material was a lot to take in but he simplified it by providing stories that correlated with the material and reviewed the material thoroughly before exams. Very approachable and helpful. Overall great prof!
They broke the mold when this man became a teacher...he is by far the best teacher/T.A./Academic Advisor I've ever had...I still stop into his office to talk every once in a while when I'm up on that side of campus because he's that eazy to deal with...take this course for you gen. ed's you wont be dissapointed!
Mr. Conlin was a great professor. very easy, and provided so much help. very knowledgeable of current events. If you want a good time in a sosc. course, take him, hes awesome
This tutorial leader is amazing. Though he may be ready for retirement which is exhibited in a frequently laissez-faire attitude, he is very knowlegeable. His experience as a blue-collar worker in the labour market brings valuable comments in the context of labour relations.
greatest prof i have ever had. incredible person, always there to help. very understanding. course is dense, but he tells you what is on the exam so it is very easy. he is incredibly funny and relates his personal experience into his teaching. great guy i would love to have him again. you rock terry~!
I'M NOW IN THIRD YEAR, AND I MUST SAY MR.CONLIN HAS BEEN THE BEST PROF SO FAR. YOU MUST TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!!
Interesting T.A. in the sense that he knows what he is talking about and has the life experience to back it up, plus he is interested in the field, but he is obviously on the downside of his career and sometimes you question his style. Doesn't give a lot of positive or negative feedback on assignments and come exam time he wasnt that useful.
Amazing T.A. don't know what he's like as a prof. though, definitely knows his stuff, really understanding (he gave me a month extension on a paper way overdue to begin with)he got me really interested in Canadian Society, stuff i thought was pretty dense, boring and unsignificant before.
amazing
one of the best TAs that York University has hired. He is very knowledgeable, funny, and full of good stores. seriously, tutorial with him does not feel like two hours. if you get anyone other than him for a TA for SOSC1000, switch to his class. if not, drop the course.
amazing TA. He's very helpful and an A+ is possible in his class, as long as you put a lot of work into it. Unlike the other TAs in this class, he's actually NICE and helpful. I would love to take a class with him again.
He was only my tutor for the class I took, but he completely made up for the lecturer's ineptitude.
One of the best TA's. Make sure that you get this teacher as your TA. You will enjoy going to his class.
Nice prof.
He's the first professor who i noticed that wasnt out to screw students over. His lectures are interesting and he uses personal experiences every now and then to back himself up. His exam reviews are short and concise and if you study them you'll do well. Hes a very good professor whos not out to screw you over.
Very knowledgeable professor, often lectured without any lecture notes (which sometimes made it a little hard to follow along). However, if you needed the help with lectures/assignments/etc, he was more than willing to help. Word of advise, don't make the "wealth of nations" confuse you, he just likes talking about it.
A truly excellent prof and TA. His lecture style is casual, but if you attend regularly and do the readings, you will have everything you need for the exams. He may seem harsh when he is discussing exams and assignments, but if you follow instructions and put a decent amount of effort into the course, an A+ is definitely possible.
First prof i ever had at York. Very informative, very helpful with questions regarding his class and regarding university. No posted notes online, lectures can be sometimes boring but its due to the content. Overall great prof :)
He was one of my first prof's at york and when i left my program he was the only one I missed. He's very intelligent, casual lecture style and nice when you ask for help. Sometimes his lectures can be a bit hard to follow since he doesnt have notes but if you attend and pay attention, you'll do fine =)
A funny guy and a good lecturer, material for the course was a bit boring, but can't complain too much. Course consisted of 3 essays, fairly easy exams where he gives you the topics, and just doing easy tutorial leadership questions. If you need a 9-credit SOSC, take it.
One of the best profs i've had so far. He was so interested in what he was talking about that it made you interested too and I loved all of his stories. The material wasn't so bad, but it was a lot to read. If i could, i would take another course with him and this time make sure i have him as my ta.
this professor has a lot of random things to say, after the the strike he just stopped lecturing and talked about native people and caribous. the ta did most of the work in explaining the content, while we didnt learn much from the lectures. people stopped coming to the lecture near the end of the course, maybe because of the strike? or he so borin
Loved his lectures, and he always related them to a life experience. I had the privilege of having Terry as my TA and he was extremely helpful, and super kind! One of the best profs ive ever had!
Very interesting learning experience! love him!
Terry tends to ramble on during his lecture and speaks REALLY fast so taking notes can be a struggle. He relies heavily on course readings which are also very long and boring. He is very knowledgeable, but cannot help you. As a T.A., he does nothing and just rambles on about stories from his past and he is a very hard marker.
i was really looking forward to this class in my first year but it was honestly my worst class. i hated going to it. he rambles, has no online notes and talks so fast that you cant even write proper notes. thank god fror the tuturiols or i would have failed. the readings are so long and useless.
Great Prof. Changed the way I looked at social science and life. Difficult marker but will do his best to help you do as well you can. Talk to him during tutorials let him know you exist. He is a smart guy and will talk to you aabout almost anything. However he does have his moments where he was rode to me overall good class.Dont talk while in clas
I took this course in my first year and it was my worse class! He does talk real fast so taking notes was a pain and he can be rude sometimes. On the bright side he does give you the exam questions a few weeks before the exam so that'll help. Also, when taking this course it's all about you're TA and how helpful they are.
tough marker but he is understandable & if u need help he will give it.I like the way he teaches he is definately not boring sit closer,u will enjoy the lecture more.love the way he talks about his past and personal experiences. The story that I will never forget is about rememberance day &how members of his family were involved in fighting the war.
This prof is one of the hardest profs I've had and the course overall was very difficult. It didn't help that the TA didn't help out at all!
I was looking forward to this class since i am a social science major. However i did not like his class at all because he did not teach properly nor did he ever make sense. He rambles off and does not believe in "technology". Definitely my worst course this year.
Great lectures, such a good course :) You need to go to lecture and pay attention, also do the readings. He's a very interesting professor, just don't interrupt him.
His exams are pretty easy if you do the readings, going to tutorials also help with that.. hes very approachable and nice..
very bad
Conlin was an amazing professor! His ponytail was really cool and edgy. I liked his stories and he was very helpful in regards to my future.
Course overall was pretty good. He is kind of boring lecturer but in smaller groups he is amazing. He is a great TA and not such a bad marker. If you show up to class and do your work getting a good grade is very possible. His exams are amazingly fair and he does give exam outlines which are actually a huge help. Overall enjoyable class.
Liberal-minded and very intelligent, tends to go off on tangents and spout dates like crazy, but if you get the main points you'll do well. gives exam review (very helpful) but doesn't use a microphone. nice beard, fun to listen to his stories, attending lectures is important, and there are many required readings. overall interesting prof
He's great not too clear sometimes during lecture. Need to have all readings done ahead of time. STAY AWAY from Grace Park as a TA she's terrible she expects too much for a first year course. Very very hard marker compared to the rest of the TAs including the prof...
Overall Good Professor, does an excellent job of explaining the concepts. Goes a little fast but lectures are only 1.5 hours a week. Good course to take if you like to learn about Social Science. Very knowledgeable and knows what he is talking about.
He won't use a microphone even though it's a giant lecture hall & still uses VHS movies of horrible quality. Doesn't post anything, doesn't even use powerpoint. Lectures were very confusing & the readings suck but if you really work and go to class you can do well. 2 essays & 2 tutorial "lead the group in a discussion projects" + midterm & exam.
The best and most knowledgable professor. Whoever thins differently must have been sleeping in class. Absolutely loved him
Terry Conlin is an old fashion professor. He refuses to use a microphone in a 500 person lecture, and uses old VHS movies that are difficult to understand. However, his exams were straight forward and simple. As long as you attend lectures and get a good tutorial leader you should recieve a fair grade.
Hands down the best lecturer at York. A lot of people don't like his old school style of teaching, but if you pay attention in class, not only will you do well, you will also understand why he is the way that he is. It's part of the course material, ffs. 4th year student: have not had a more insightful prof to listen to in my time.
I had him this summer, and he is AWESOME! Very clear, concise and helpful. I loved his stories - they made going to class fun! One of the greatest Prof's at York by far!
Kind of boring, but very knowledgable. Gives proper instructions for exam. Speaks fast but has no problems repeating himself for anyone. All-in-all.. brilliant guy!
Really dislike his refusal to use technology, it's sometimes difficult to follow his broad, fast paced lectures that don't seem to have any real point or staying power. However, he is quite knowledgeable and is very clear about the expectations of the course and outlines for tests and essays.
Conlin is an AMAZING prof. his lectures are easy to understand and interesting. It is a heavy reading load for this course as its 9 credits but if you keep up with the readings you'll be fine. one essay and one exam per semester so its really easy. I would definitely take another course with him.
One of the best professors at york I think. His style is just like he's having a conversations, which is great for those who can listen attentively!
A great professor! The readings are extremely helpful and the lectures put all the themes together in an understandable way. He treats lectures as conversations and brings in current events to tie into sometimes dated research. He is a helpful Professor and very knowledgeable.
Was alright. Didn't like to repeat himself. Not very approachable.
A great professor, his style may be a little different (not using the mic, being a little hesitant to advanced technology, still using the projector/overhead) never the less a great lecturer and has amazing knowledge in social science, loved his course and the content, it affirmed to me why I want to study social science :)
Talks and rants. Doesn't like technology, which is annoying. Won't use a mic though the lecture hall is huge. Uses VERY outdated materials. Spent a class trying to fix the VHS tape player because he refused to use any other medium to show a documentary, even when we offered many times to put up the Youtube video of the exact same doc on screen.
Beyond boring professor, all i see while im in this class is people walking out, hates technology.. he said "let me bore you for 90 minutes, and you'll learn if you want to" .. i'd rather a professor would want his students to WANT to learn as opposed to being bored.
Terry is a good professor overall, he likes to do things old school, in that he uses VHS tapes and no power-point. He has a very loud voice, so he does not use the microphone, but it would be a good idea to get a spot up at the front just to make sure you hear him. Sometimes he gets a little sidetracked, but overall he makes easy note taking.
Can never keep up with the man because he just rambles on or talks way to fast.. don't bother going to lecture because you'll get nothing out of it. he gives an exam review at the end with exactly what to study.. take that and google the terms and your all set!
I absolutely loved Terry as a professor and a TA. As a TA he really makes an attempt to connect with his students and he is extremely helpful. He wants his student to succeed. As a professor he can get boring and go on his rants but within those rants there is alot to learn. Overall this class and prof is great, I'd take it again if I could.
Good prof,he used the mic last year, and as long as you go to tutorials it's an easy B+
A fantastic professor! So many people complain about how hard-assed he can be, but the reality is that he wants you to take responsibility for your own learning. His rants are always real-life (and often hilarious) stories that have a strong connection to the concepts taught. Very engaging and will help you if you are truly putting in an effort.
He doesn't like technology and he rambles on and on. Also one of the most boring teachers I have ever had in my life. It is almost impossible to take notes in his class due to his rambling and this class in my opinion is plain torture. Don't let the course description deceive you.. or attend 2-3 lectures and drop it asap if you dislike the course.
He has an amazing personality but as a prof I wouldn't recommend him. amazing person to talk to though!
The amount of reading in this class is beyond extensive. The material is interesting, but the minimum amount of reading one does in a week is 75 pages. He does explain everything very clearly though, and he gives a clear review for tests. It is easy to do well in this class as long as you stay on top of your reading.
Attending lecture is key to success, but hard to approach because of his busy schedule. TA I had for Canadian Problems was a harsh marker, but a some-what good overall. Advice: don't skip classes or tutorial.
This teacher is just amazing! I was not interested at all by social sciences and took this course just because I had to. Turned out to be my favorite first year course! There's a lot of material to read but it is so much interesting that you won't even notice. Furthermore, it is very easy to get a good grade 'cause his expectations are made clear.
Terry is a good guy, and decent lecturer, but I understand that he may not be everyones cup of tea as he is quite old-fashioned, from the old projector to dated videos that he shows in class. Understanding course kit material is mandatory as you're tested purely on the readings. The lectures do serve as a nice supplement to the readings though.
Professor Terry Conlin is an amazing professor. I would say he is one of the best. Unfortunately he would be retired by now. I had him a year ago and I never missed his lectures. He knows what he is talking about very well. He is like a good book that you will never forget. Wish him all the best!
gives good lectures, makes everything available, makes exam easy to prep for
Good lecturer, but due to his busy schedule, hard to book an appointment with if need help. Course is interesting.
SOSC1000 was such a easy course. Easy A if you just go to the tutorials and make some good notes. He also got hit by a car in the 2015 strike LOL. You don't really have to attend lectures, just go to the tutorials. I never read any text as I Googled and went to tutorials. Exams were also very easy as he gives the questions prior.
Terry is a old school professor who does not post anything online and sometimes rejects using the mic. He is a nice guy however and truly cares for students. Would not recommend the TA Manual, he marks way too tough for a 1000 level course. Gives exam question ahead of exam, however there is a lot of reading involved. Would recommend for gen ed
Had professor Conlin last summer. If I had to name a professor who cared the most about his teachings, it's Terry Conlin, without a doubt. Very sophisticated use of humour, very smart and knowledgeable. Professor Conlin's material and evaluation load/difficulty are decent and reasonable. Most of the texts are relevant and worth remembering.
Get ready to read lol
Terry is an old-fashioned kind of guy. No slides online and rarely any during the lectures so get ready to read a lot. The reading load is not a small one.
He's so boring and rambles on about his life. He does not have any lecture slides or any work online so its nearly impossible to get quality notes. I had a terrible time in his class.
This old professor talk way too fast for me to take notes, and he doesn't use PPT slides at all. Also, his voice is so low that if you sit at the back, you will only hear mumbles
This class was my last class of my long day, and I NEVER had the energy to attend. Thankfully the tutorials were extremely helpful! Lots of documentaries shown that are very dull. Terry is very nice however with his beard getting in the way of his mic, you can barely hear him even if you sit close. The reads are SO LONG and SO BORING! Exams easy
The lectures were really boring. 2 tests and 2 essays (which were both 8-10 pages). There is A LOT of readings. If you're a first year student, I wouldn't suggest taking this course (for your own good)! My TA was not helpful at all which made my experience in this class even worse. There are definitely easier first year SOSC courses.
Prof. Conlin is old fashion, no ppt, long reads, lectures are heavy at times but his personality is great, he is funny & cares about education& his students, you get to know this if he's your TA. His criteria in the lectures are based on those who actually want to & are there to learn, though exams & assignments are easy. Be on top of readings-long
Old-fashioned guy. No moodle or online portion. That being said, he is quite easy if you are willing to do the work. 2 essays, 2 tests and 15% for attending tutorials. As long as you do the readings, finish your work and put in effort its easy to get a good grade. The people that did poorly procrastinated. Keep up with the readings and ull be fine
He's lectures are interesting but passing the course depends heavily on who your T.A is.
The course materials such as textbooks and course kits were very VERY expensive. I regret buying them as I didn't even use them until I was a group leader. Tutorials are really the basis to your grade. Be friendly to your TA, essays are time consuming but not hard, participate, emphasize summaries/importance of readings instead. Lectures optional.
terrys lectures are about 7/10 not too dry but not attention grabbing. however find a good TA as they will be the one grading your work and who you will interact the most with
Great prof, respected, and very intelligent.
He does not teach. He will go on about his life and tell his personal stories and only shows videos instead of teaching what he knows. no power points nor does he write anything he only talks and he puts you to sleep with his voice and his teaching method.
A lot of readings to be done before class but they are amazingly interesting. Has a very interesting way of talking. (Sometimes goes off-track). Gives practical examples that make the topics very clear.
This course involves reading, however the main part of this class is the tutorial class, because the TA's are the people who provide exams/essays/grade ur mark, etc... With my TA, Ali Hirji, I was able to enjoy the class and get the marks I aimed for really easily, because this TA went above and beyond, on helping us in every way possible, any time
Terry is a very nice professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches and I admire him for that. Personally, I did not enjoy the lectures because there are no powerpoints he just talks for two hours straight without a mic and I didn't understand. Very heavy reading approx 100-120pgs a week. two exams and two essays. overall it was mediocre.
The lec were wayyyyyyyy too long. There was a lot of info given in the lecs, and most of it was usless and not on the exams. The exams were very easy but the outline for the exams were unclear. Make sure you have a good TA or else this class becomes unbearable!
