New teacher at BC, and teaches straight out of the book (don't bother taking notes), but she's very concerned about actual understanding & will regularly ask the class how they're doing and what they need clarified. Tests are easy if you study & do the examples in the book. Always stays after to help. Would definately take her again next semester.
good teacher. she really cares if you understand. you could ask her a lot of questions in class and she'll answer them. her tests are fair. she curves a lot on her tests and quizes. take her class!

Porfessor terry dowd. She is a wonderful teacher, follow the class takes her notes practice with the exeples she gives at the end of each period.and you will be fine.
I think she was an OK teacher. She was very easy with us when quizes and tests came around. She does drop the lowest of at least four quizes and her questions on tests are very similar to the questions for homework. Goto class and pay close attention and you should do fine!
Great proffessor, stays after class to help you out. goes over quizzes ( which i found quite easy). exams based on the notes and some of the text book. Pay attention to her examples in class.. the exam questions are similar. Makes everything simple. Just keep up with the reading and you'll do great!
She seems nice, she goes over things how ever many times the class wants, just ask. Quiz was just what she said it would be.. You'll need the 100$ text for this class
Excellent professor, she explains everything in detail and if the class seems to have trouble with a concept, she'll review it countless times. Exams are EXACTLY like the review questions in the textbook (which aren't difficult at all). Probably one of the best and most pleasant professors in Brooklyn College. LOVE HER!
I had a 78 first quiz, 100 on the 2nd, 75 on the 3rd, 93 on the midterm and final not too sure but it was easy and I got an A! Lots of people complained about her tests but I thought they were fair as long as you study the review q's. If you do bad on a few quizzes, don't worry, shes lenient in her grading and definitely take her if you can!
I'm surprised to see the good ratings here. Everyone I know thought she was awful. If you actually need to be taught something dont go to her. Though if you beg her enough she'll give you a better grade. Great professor huh? One day it took her at least 20 mins to balance her own equation. She always seemed confused & unprepared. Two thumbs down.
GREAT PROFESSOR!!!!
she is nice im a slow learner so i didnt do to well on her exams but shes a great teacher and i know alot because of her now and even though i didnt know at the time i took 1.1 lets not forget its 1.2 that marks the completion of your chem 1 so the knowledge she gives u is very useful pay attention =]
she's very nice and explains things clearly. if you're afraid of chemistry, stick with her. but you MUST do the homework and study. the only caveat, she doesn't respond to email most of the time, which is frustrating. but she was a great teacher.
She had hard tests imho harder than Magliozzo :) But she is very nice professor :)
She is one of the best and helpful professors. Very caring and knows her subject well.
Professor Dowd is a very good teacher, she ensures you understand the subject, always helpful, treats students like they are her sons and daughters, communicates well, responds to emails promptly, makes question very simple and easy. In fact she is very good, and I hope she keeps it up.
Pretty good teacher. Maybe a little boring, but that could just be the class and not her fault. The class was very slow paced, and she did a pretty good job of helping to explain the material. She could be a little more animated tho, I usually just fell asleep in her class.
Let just this is my third time taking chemistry, if it wasn't for her I would of fail AGAIN. She is very helpful, she cares about her student, she explain her material throughly. She moves at a slow pace. do the hw if you want to pass her test.
she is so sweet she goes over every question and does extra examples if you need them her quized are straight from the book so buy it it will help you alot take her if you want to pass!
She is a good professor but i wish a little more helpful in terms of giving out sample/practice questions. she curves so if you did bad on the first exam of Biochemistry, you still have a good chance of getting a decent grade.
She has a great personality BUT her teaching methods is horrible. If you ask a question during class, i think she starts to hyperventilate and you pity her so you just tell her to forget it. But she's really sweet and tries to help even if it's unsuccessful.
She's such a nice profess. Her teaching methods aren't great. I bought the textbook and I learned from it. Her tests are easy and straight forward. She gets a little nervous when you ask her questions. I didn't do that we'll on her quizzes but came to class everyday and made sure to answer questions and participated a lot so I got a decent grade.
I had her for 1050 and 2050 and i'm TERRIBLE at chemistry. I must have failed almost every quiz and the midterm and not sure how i did on the final but I got C's in both of them. If an idiot like me can do average in her class i'm sure you guys will get a good grade with her. She's really nice and tries to make sure everyone understands b4 movingon
I had her for both 1050 and 2050, She is the best, she is so easy and slow going that you have to understand chemistry. She is a bit insecure about herself, but she is so kind! she barely is available in her office but because of her I love chem! I would deff reccommend her
BioChem. Poor lecture notes and stream of consciousness delivery. Unclear about when exams were and what was on them.
Overrated
She might be helpful to some more than others, not sure what her favoritism is based on. Exams are administered LATE; the second one was one week before final. Overall, have to read the book, otherwise its impossible to do well on her tests.
2 exams+a final.Watch out though, initially Prof Dowd mentioned that the final would not be cumulative, and it ended up as such.Despite of that, none of the 2 exams are dropped. So if you screwed up once, that’s it, your grade is messed up. I didn’t find Prof Dowd that approachable as some students say here. This class was not a good experience.
Very good professor. Exams are straightforward and she teaches all the content on the exam. I used the office hours and found her to be very kind.
She's an ok prof. Good things are:she explains everything pretty clearly, drops one lowest grade quiz, attendance is not mandatory , cons are: often it took her a lot of time to grade quizzes, I had to wait two weeks for midterm grade and even more than two weeks for the final grade, also she doesn't upload the lecture slides to BB
Very sweet and kind but a stickler when it comes to exams
Very sweet and kind but a stickler when it comes to exams and grades
Very harsh with final grades
The smartest person in the class did not get an A. She is against A's
My advise is to stay away
Does not curve
for biochem she teaches one thing and get ready to expect something totally different on the exams. her questions are really tricky and they require alot of thinking. avoid.
For Biochemistry her exams are tough. They are very memorization based and she emphasizes small details. Very nice lady but she doesn't curve. Make sure you take note of all the minor details and you will do fine. The second test was 5 days before the final.....
biochem is already a hard class but with this professor its a nightmare. her lectures are unclear and her exams are really hard and worst of all she refuses to curve. avoid if possible.
All these bad reviews are surprising. I took Chem 1050 and it wasn't as bad as I thought. she gives you tons of problems so you could understand how to do certain things. She's sweet and answers questions even if its stupid questions. Grading wasn't harsh. She drops the lowest test score. I do recommend.
Great class. I actually learned a lot here. Just do a ton of examples before the test and you will do fine. Lecture was pretty enjoyable too.
She is a great professor. Her quizzes are really easy. The midterm and her final were a little difficult. She gives 4 quizzes one each chapter, and drops one and a midterm and final. The final chapter is covered in the final. She gives optional homework but it will really benefit you for her quizzes. Not much work. I would definitely recommend her.
i love her shes amazing !!! take her defiantly just take notes and study before every quiz
provides useful notes not mentioned in the textbook Solves problems step-by-step very patient with questions, answers all questions as best she could uses both computer and board
Confusing at times but good at dumbing down the material for the class. I'd probably take her class again
She doesn't make sure all the students understand the material. She's also very clueless and the class average is typically failing. Not to mention your whole grade is based on your quizzes, midterm and final and you only receive scan-tron sheets back from each examination, so you never know what you got wrong.
Professor Dowd is good if you just need some brushing up in Chemistry or if you just plain suck at it. But, get ready to learn and take a lot of notes in every class. She always makes sure every student understands everything before moving on. Her quizzes are slightly easier than her midterm and final, but that's expected in a science class.
She's not coherent, if one student understands she assumes everyone does. She's nice teacher she doesn't know how to teach well.
Professor Dowd is so nice andshe curves every test and quiz. she explains well and isnt difficult. very caring.
She is fine but the class can be extremely hard if you did not ace general chemistry and her homework will not prepare you for the exams. I ace Biology and organic but not her class because her exams are difficult. for premed and predental and other, i suggest getting a test bank and maybe a tutor. A student from the BA/MD progran failed her exam 1
Professor Dowd is a very nice person although her teaching methods can be quite trivial. She explains things in the classroom but when it comes to the test, good luck. The level of detail required of you to memorize and comprehend is absurd. The exams are extremely difficult and to top it off there is really nothing to guide you on exam structure.
She is really nice and tries to help you if you ask. Her tests require you to know absolutely everything -- every detail from lecture slides and textbook. Biochem is a hard course either way though. I personally would recommend her over the other professors available.
Not a bad teacher but very disorganized. This class and teacher require that you do a lot of work to get a decent grade.
P. Dowd is a boring lecturer but she makes up for it. Chemistry is a very difficult subject but she explains things so clearly and goes through examples step by step. She doesn't assume everyone just knows how she got from step A to C. She gives quizzes at the end of each chapter and has 2 midterms and a final. YOU MUST STUDY.
Terry Dowd is a very caring professor. She does a lot of problems to prepare you for the quiz or exam.
She is an amazing chemistry teacher. She explains everything step by step so the whole class can understand the material. However, you must study on your own and do the homework that is assigned to you. Be prepared to memorize lots of things.
she really wants to help her students do well, she explains each problem and gives many examples that she goes over. quozess are given with lowest one dropped, shes the best chem prfoessor you will come by in brooklyn college.
She says she curves grades, but she does not and she is not clear on what will be on tests. She does explain everything clearly and does a lot of practice, but does tend to mislead you when it comes to testing.
The worst professsor ever. Odee unorganized, tells us whats going to be on the test and puts the complete opposite. This aint no game. This is my grade on the line. Biochem is already odee hard to begin with and with this professor its a damn nightmare. She was the only one teaching this semester . Take another one if you can.
The professor Dowd has an unbelievable talent to make an extremely difficult subject easy and completely clear. Her lectures are very interesting and encourage you to actively participate. If you will take nice notes, and read the book you will do fine. She gave topics for the final exam which helped us a lot. She is a great help in her office
Great personality with a sophisticated sense of humor, one of the best professors I ever had! I was nervous from the beginning of this class, took chemistry years ago and obviously, the biochemistry is a difficult subject but with her nicely organized, interesting lectures and fully committed work I did fine. I recommend taking her class highly.
Professor Dowd genuinely cares for your academic success, however, you have to put your effort into it; the biochemistry includes concepts and a lot of memorization. I definitely suggest seeing her after the class or in her office hours because she further will explain what might have confused you. Here notes are a good guide for the tests.
What a journey! What a learning opportunity. I am so grateful, that I choose CUNY Brooklyn College for my biochemistry course, and so fortunate to attend Dr. Dowd's class! And if you are someone who's afraid of Biochemistry like I did, but have strong work ethics you will end it up with a VICTORY! Ask for help, she does this with enthusiasm.
She was a very sweet professor. Lots of notes, unorganized, and no clear grading criteria. Sadly, the only prof teaching a combined class of undergrad AND graduates. No review sheet, skips some notes. Attendance is needed to understand lectures. Read the textbook, she may be help to some students but to most, no one really knew what was going on.
One of the best professors. Knowledgeable and genuinely cares about students. Biochemistry is not an easy subject but her lectures made the concepts much easier to understand. She does practice problems in class and is always available to help outside of class. The tests aren't easy but they are fair. No surprises, if you failed you didn't study!
Biochemistry is definitely not an easy class, it requires a lot of time and effort so dont expect an easy A. Professor Dowd is no doubt the best and most caring professor I have ever had. She explains the material very clearly and easily. She has made it a wonderful experience. As long as you put in effort you should pass. Highly recommend!!
Knows her material but cant teach. Focuses her attention on one section of the class and continues even if you say you dont understand the material. She cant handle the class and spends time stopping to settle the class. Very unorganized and posts material the night before class.
I took her for Biochemistry. I was so glad I took the class, it really helped me to prepare for the MCAT. The exam covers what was taught in class. It is important to participate! Professor Dowd is always available to speak to students and to help them out.
She drops lowest grade. I recommend her. I recommend listening and paying attention in class. Although class isnt mandatory, if you show up and listen then the exams will be pretty fair and easy for you. She is a really sweet person. I would take her for other chemistry courses as well.
Honestly the whole chemistry department is problematic. They barely do anything to help students. The textbook isnt even helpful. I think they still based the tests on the old textbook but they wont admit it. Makes me want to not be in the medical field anymore.
Professor Dowd has a great way of explaining material and gives plenty of practice problems that help out when it comes to exam time. She is very open to explaining things in her officer or after class, take her!
professor dowd is absolutely wonderful. chem isn't easy and it wasn't an easy transition from in person to online, but she taught it well and thoroughly. She is always available to help and wants to help you make sure you understand the material. She is truly a one of a kind professor, i'd take her again in a heartbeat.
She is always late to her own lecture and can sometimes be confusing. Easier to just read the textbook on your own.
engaging, smart ,very nice and funny too. i was really scared to take biochem because i heard how hard it was but it really was not bad at all. required about 3-4 days of intensive study before exam to do well. make sure you know buffers as that is tested heavily in the first exam and probably hardest topic of course.
While Professor Dowd is available after classes, during lectures she is a mess. Constantly behind in content, fails to accurate information to students, and does not take into account the class is in an online format.
She is nice and helpful outside of class but tests are very tricky. I did not feel like they tested our knowledge of content but rather our reading comprehension skills, like if you can notice a slight error in the true false statements. Did not think tests were fair at all. I would avoid if given chance to take her class again
She made the class a living hell during the pandemic. Everyone praised her in-person teaching but online she is the most insensitive and inconsiderate professor. Thought students were always cheating, made false accusations, barely gave any time to answer exam questions, and made them so difficult that the exam being open book didn't even help.
I had the privilege of taking Professor's Dowd class online during the pandemic. She never accused us of cheating (so I dont know where the other reviewer came up with that), and she took a LOT of time caring for each and every student. Tests were ALWAYS FAIR as well. I personally would take any class Professor Dowd teaches without hesitation!
TAKE HER; YOU WON'T REGRET: After failing Chem 1050 twice, Prof. Dowd changed my thoughts of me being un-teachable and bad in terms of chemistry. Same grading as chem dept., but she is the best teacher I have come across in chem. Connected to her students; allows understanding, offers help, 1 quiz grade drop, examples, e.c. She is nice and caring!
I have tried to take General Chem two times before taking Dr. Dowd. Dr. Dowd is so knowledgeable and tries to explain everything to the best of her ability. Her lectures are filled with examples so if you attend, there is no way you wouldn't understand the topic. The Chem department assigns optional homework on the syllabus, DO THAT! It's so useful
Prof Dowd is a very caring professor and her lectures were very beneficial to my MCAT prep. She is also reasonable with her exams. Would definitely recommend her for both Biochem 1 and 2.
She's a really nice Professor and obviously cares for her students. The grading structure sucks, it's all on exams. She records the lectures, so definitely watch those! She explains very well and is extremely nice. This is college u have to be accountable for studying. She's an amazing guide!
Horrible professor. Unorganized. Makes you take exams in such weird ways that will disrupt your sanity. Just use a lockdown browser! Doesn't let you see what you got wrong on the exam. This professor should stick to in person meetings because she isn't tech savvy enough to be teaching an advanced course such as biochemistry
She is a nice professor and knows her materials very well. Your grades depend on only quizzes and tests which the materials are all covered in class lectures. She do lots of examples in class meetings so theres no way you wont understand and do poorly on exams unless you dont pay attention in class and dont study the materials.
Professor doesn't know how to use online resources. You WILL fail her exams even if you study because she seems to not understand to test us on the material not whether or not we're going to cheat...
Professor Dowd is a great chemistry professor and teaches very well. If your like me, a person who has never taken chemistry before, she does a very good job explaining the material. She is very down to earth and will help you. This is chemistry. It is not an easy subject, but as for who is teaches you, this professor is a great option.
Professor Dowd was an AMAZING professor! Chemistry is a difficult course and in order to pass you have to set time to study, it all does not fall on the professor if you failed an exam/quiz, she did her best to introduce the topic to us, but it's up to us to study to understand better what she has taught us. She is very charming and caring<3!
just no. Every single day, I thought about dropping this class when I was studying. No clear grading criteria, the whole grade is based on 3 tests, she confuses herself during lectures, no curve but she would always say "we are graded relative to each other".... miss that's called a curve. Biochem is no walk in the park but shouldnt be teaching it
This was the worst class I have ever taken. Every exam was so damn hard, basically everybody failed each and every single test or did very poorly. She wasnt clear on how we would be graded at all (relative?) and Her lectures are confusing and had nothing to do with what was on the test. The homework didn't correlate either. Don't take this class...
Honestly this is my 2nd time taking this course so its safe to say chem isn't my subject. However anything is possible because I went from failing 2 quizzes and getting Cs all semester to doing good on the final and she dropped the lowest quiz and gave me a B. Bless her heart!!! take her!
I failed the first time I took General Chemistry. When I enrolled, I came in with the mindset of C- being the highest grade I could possibly get. I was honestly surprised with how much I learned from Professor Dowd. Attend the daily lectures, form study groups with friends, go to office hours to ask any questions, and do the textbook practice.
This has gotten to be the WORST class Ive ever taken thus far. She assigned an extra day to meet outside of the actual day were supposed to meet to cover extra material & held people accountable for those not covered. Grading was only based on 3 exams. Each exam was brutal & was not related to the material, hw questions covered. COMPLETELY AVOID!!
Amazing professor who really cares about her students!! If you are stuck with any material presented during class, please visit her office hours. She wants you to understand the class material and succeed. I would recommend Professor Dowd to anyone who wishes to take Biochemistry.
Sweetest chem prof I ever had! She really cares for her students and wants everyone to do well. I got an A in the course bc of my hardwork & her help. She explains really well too. Try to read the ch & then watch recordings, that helped me a lot! Keep in mind that this is an advanced course so u gotta study hard instead of just skimming thru slides
Even though I failed her class with an F, she tried her best to help me and even recommended the type of problems to practice willingly without having to ask to pass her lecture tests. Shes straight forward, if you want your grade you gotta work hard for it. Shes so kind and I only done bad this semester because so much was on my plate.
Professor Dowd is one of the best professors a student could ask for. She is there to help all the way and is extremely fair to everyone. All you need to do is to put in work on your end and you will do great. I highly recommend taking Professor Dowd, she is the best even after you have taken her class, she will do her best to help you.
She is by far the best chemistry professor in my opinion in Brooklyn College. She drops 1 of your lowest quiz grades. She is caring and will go over a problem multiple times over just do a student can understand it.
She is literally amazing! The best science Professor I have had at BC ever She responds to emails quick, gives extra credit to the class. She gives partial credit on mcq/short answer on the exams. She wants her students to do well! Everything she tests is straight off her slides. She gives hw from the tb and very similar questions are on the test.
Terry is the best professor ever in brooklyn college. She gives extra credits and she is caring students. Exams and quizes are easy because as long as you do the homework you will get a good grade. Take her!!
Throughout my years at brooklyn college, there was never a Professor as smart, caring, and charismatic as Professor Dowd. Super interesting lectures that give handwritten notes that are very comprehensive and cover 99% of exam questions. willing to give 110% to teach everything you need and is a great person to talk to @ office hours. TAKE HER!!!!!
Great professor. Lenient grading and gives good feedback if you visit her office hours. Her classes are not mandatory but she specifically goes into what she will test and what she won't test. Additionally, her lecture slides are all you need to succeed. Use the textbook or YouTube to supplement the slides.
Amazing professor. Took her for Chem 1A and 1B. Please take her if you can!
Attendance not mandatory but you have to go because she annotates the slides and adds missing information needed for exams. Make flash cards of everything on the slides except for when she says you dont have to know it. Doesn't hurt to get started on memorizing amino acids before reaching the chapter. Hard exams and grade is based on 4 of them.
Graded on 4 exams weighing 23% and the final weighing 31% It's absurd how difficult her exams are. They're not an accurate reflection of what's being taught in class Needs to reconsider her exams and match the material she discusses in lectures. Outside of class she seems to care about students but if she really cares she should reformat her exams
I would take any class taught by her since she is fair. the tests can have tricky questions, but a lot of the material is covered in class and also do pay attention to the text book because the information for the test is sometimes directly from the chapter. if she mentions something multiple times, it will be tested. overall it was a good class
This professor lacks understanding on how to teach. I had her for chemistry and she was wonderful but for biochem she glosses over everything. If one kid understands the material she assumes that she did a good job teaching and everyone should understand. She should curve exam scores more generously. Students would complain yes. These are our lives
It genuinely feels like this professor does not want her students to succeed. Her exams are incredibly complex where some of the questions are ambiguous. Questions are on minute details that weren't emphasized enough during lecture. It's a shame that this is happening. Really hoping she considers curving grades.
Homework is assigned as practice problems for exams. They are not mandatory but are excellent help. She is very kind and considerate, grades extremely fairly. If you've read the course material and understand it, the tests will be no problem. Highly recommend her by all means
This professor is super caring and her lectures are always entertaining. Everything that is included in her lectures or in the older recordings on blackboard are on the exams. There are no surprises on the exams, and those that say she puts things she never teaches, don't put in proper effort into studying. Amazing and recommend to everyone.
Very straightforward class, great professor. Three midterms worth 23% and a final worth 31% sums the course grade. Her grading rubric is relatively generous unlike other professors; an A is very doable if you watch her lecture videos and go to class. She's also extremely sweet and polite. I would definitely take another course of hers if possible.
She grades very fairly. Her exams are exactly what is discussed in lecture, no unexpected questions. She's great at teaching the course, and happens to be very nice as well. Glad I enrolled in her course, highly recommend.
Great professor, keep going over in class examples, dedicated hours of study time , that's where fundamental lie. Very encouraging and lectures were never boring. Overall actually understood learned!
Biochem is a tough course, so read the textbook to truly understand the material. She sometimes makes mistakes but corrects them when students point them out. Her announcements can be unclear, but doing her homework helps a lot with exams. She's accessible in person and by email, but can sound condescending at times.
Horrible professor, cant teach and purely reads off slides- writes out of context statements that are hard to comprehend after class when studying. It has taken more than 3 WEEKS to grade each exam despite that a good portion is MC. Not to mention she goes back on her word regarding what tests are on & is generally rude if you dont kiss up to her.
This class is hard, but very fair and interesting. Professor Dowd teaches exactly what she tests on. If you attend lecture and study, the exams are manageable. Most complaints come from students who skip class or don't put in the effort. Challenging but rewarding course.
Dowd is ok. Grades are 100% based on exams. Her exams are difficult, as expected, but mostly fair. Lectures are mostly talking to the ppt, not very engaging. I completely learned from the textbook, memorizing the book verbatim. Her videos repeat the textbook, but include small things not in the book that may appear on exams. Takes FOREVER to grade.
It's clear she know what she's talking about but she's quite specific about what she puts on her tests and it's very hard to predict if some miscellaneous items will be on it. Lectures are slow and based off her slides and she posts hw for practice. 3 exams,1 noncumulative final, detailed questions. She's very nice but you need to study a lot.
