wonderful teacher, openminded with a great sense of humour
Not too bad. Very intelligent, but stubborn.

Great prof., some really eccentric lectures!

A great Prof that everyone should have at least once...closed minded about some topics...Easy to do well in his class but don't expect As...Bs are easily attainable.
Very smart man; sometimes a bit hard to follow. You can learn a lot from him. He's very into what he does and energetic.
Kinda rude when you approach him personally about something, favours those who are in his tutorial, interesting lectures, but hard to take notes, as he doesn't really say much except express his views about a certain text...
leaves a lot of things out of lecture. only people in his tutorial know what he's talking about

Very funny...I can't believe he actually says some of the things he does during lectures. However pretty disorganized. Jumps from topic to topic without giving a clear understanding of anything
He is an incredibly well rounded individual ans has much life experience to offer his students.
Terry is a very intelligent and interesting person. Although I did not learn a single thing from his lectures, I did learn from his tutorials. He challenged my opinions and I greatly appreciate it. His tutorials were fun, and filled with discussion.

It was a very interesting class and Terry did a great job teaching it!
Interesting professor who is a decent lecturer. However, the content of his lectures left something to be desired. The hour long length didn't allow for a thorough examination of the topics, however tutorial did a good job of fixing that deficiency.
He was a good teacher, I had biases going into the class, but I have a new knowledge about people who are different then me. The class made me a better person.
Terry has a strong voice and eloquent delivery of speech. Although he can be hard to understand at times, he aims for clarity when you ask specific questions. Terry does not beat around the bush and he has the same expectations from his students.
This course is fabulous! The texts are so interesting, but challenging - the tutorials are so packed with info, that your brain literally hurts after every tutorial.. but WOW, you learn SO MUCH - FANTASTIC !!!!!!!!

worst professor ever. rude. avoid.

Very interesting course and he's obviously quite passionate about it. Texts are also interesting. Good lecturer - very random though. Nice guy all and all, but a hard marker.
It was the worst course that I ever took in my entire life. If you are not with is ideology then you will fail. Stay away from this course especially if you are visible minority because his ideas are just crazy and beyond the norms. I had to drop this course midway, I never dropped a course since I got to York. I just had to man!
I thought Terry was a pretty good professor. Sometimes his lectures went a bit into left field but they were still interesting, informative and creative - he has no structure and just goes with it - you have no idea what to expect! His views tend to overshadow the work a bit but so do most profs... The readings are well set-up and were great.
Terry Goldie comes across me as having a confrontational character...so don't be alarmed if he gives you the finger and say '**** you' to see if you are paying attention. He does challenge normative ways of thinking, so if this is something you will take as a set back then perhaps this class is not for you- on the other hand, perhaps it is.
**** professor big time stay away if not a female or gay, especially if your a minority
like most english professors at york, if ou do not think like them, then you get a C. did not enjoy the class for the most part, glad the year is almost over.
a very insecure man. intelligent but poor execution of his ideas. unknowingly insensitive to racialized minorities. favours those who lead alternative lifestyles. does not present himself as the professor but, instead, attempts to be 'cool' or 'down'. however, it did NOT work.
I hated this course. I think this is just a poor excuse for an English course. I don't recommend this course if you actually want to learn something!
Terry is good, but some organization would really improve his lectures. He lets tutorials slide into student anecdotes which becomes pretty boring, but when he's controlling the tutorial it's interesting. I've heard he's a tough marker but he marks fine when you try to be creative in your analysis.
Terry is an excellent Professor - I have no idea why there are so many negative reviews! He makes his class very interesting, shows respect for everyone, and knows what he is talking about. As long as you do the readings and attend all classes you will do just fine.
This course was separated into two terms for 2011/12. Terry is easy to listen to, but tells a lot of personal sexual stories that may make you uncomfortable. The course outline is clear: two in class essays, one regular essay and a take home exam. You NEED to do the readings. Having all 3 TAs before, try to get Andy as a TA
Came out this class confused and had so many questions as when talking about gender, there are no right or wrong asnwers as it is pure opinion based. If you don't do the readings, you will be absolutely lost. I did the readings and I was still lost and the TA (Anna) didnt make it any easier. Didnt find the texts interesting or easy to understand.
Thought he was interesting. Enjoyed the class as a whole. Found the essay topics easy.
You'll be fine as long as you tell him what he wants to hear and you parrot his lectures back to him in essays.
Terry is really cool. he listens to what every student has to say and really gives them a fair chance to try to see value in their comment. Try to be in his tutorial, theyre a lot of fun!
Very mixed feelings. On one hand very open and sensitive about personal life and on the other hand no structure to the lectures making it hard to logically prepare for exams/assignments. Readings were either very deeply emotional and beautiful OR probably off of Oprah's book list. Very good at letting students have their say, will call out idiots.
If you don't regurgitate what he says in lecture on your assignments (essays), the chances of you getting a high grade are unlikely. His lectures are almost the same every week and it get's boring after a while. Not to mention he is also a hard grader but very helpful when you ask and overall, he is a kind hearted man. Prepare for the reading load.
Terry is an incredible teacher and human being. His lectures are funny, real, raw and inspiring. In order to appreciate this course, you have to approach it in a different way than most courses. Look at the big picture of gender and sexuality, and you will learn a lot and become a more open and less judgemental person. Would take again x10000000000
Terry is really nice and incredibly brilliant with regards to his field of work, but I found he was very picky with his grading and didn't offer much good feedback. When I asked for guidance, his answers were consistently vague and unhelpful. However, the readings for his course became some of my favourite books of all time.
Terry is SUPER engaging. He always gets back to emails, no matter how dumb the question, and has this aura about him that can make anyone feel comfortable and willing to participate.
Let me just start off by saying that if you have a life outside of school and you aren't 100% free to read the obscenely large amounts of text that are expected of you to read then good luck. The exams for this course is the dumbest thing I've ever seen, the final exam is three 1000 word essays due over a weekend. if you have a job good luck.
VERY knowledgeable. He's one of the most open minded professors I've met but if you give him a different or more traditional thought about something, you'll be wrong every time. Not very clear. Difficult marker. Best to regurgitate what you've heard from him. Very passionate. You need to go to class to pass. Grade average was a C.
Very surprised to read the negative feedback re: Terry. Heavy reading for a 2nd yr level - sure - but, to be expected of an English course of this type: literature + theory. Terry's lectures are very engaging. Personal anecdotes make him personable. His perspective is refreshing. He encourages out of the box thinking. He is caring. A real gem!
The class was cool, I went to lecture probably 5 times the whole year but I went to every tutorial which is way more crucial, depends on the TA you have cause mine was good. Got a B+ and i read less than half of the readings, as long as you know what you're talking about and use some sources from your TA you'll be good
His lectures are unstructured and sometimes he doesn't lecture about the readings. He had a substitute for a couple of weeks who was amazing! Terry should take notes. For the final exam, it is expected to write three 1000 word essays within 3 days during the first week of exams. The TAs are a joke. The only good aspects are the readings. Avoid.
Terry is very passionate and seems very knowledgeable but he is way over his head. He is a very tough marker. He has strong points of views and perspectives on things and if you don't agree with them you won't get a good mark on your essays and tests. He is also not very respectful in his emails, even though he replies fast. AVOID AT ALL COST!
Don't know why terry doesn't have a better rating. He is a real gem. His lectures are super accessiable, sure theres alot of reading but it's easy to get an A in his online class, and he's just a sweetheart and gives great feedback.
Avoid at all costs. Prof Goldie is a ridiculously hard marker. The texts and lectures are interesting but his tough marking trumps anything good about this course. I am an English Major who gets all B+As in everything and I was shocked when he gave me C after C. Avoid him as a professor if you need good marks for grad school!! ):
Taking this class destroyed my GPA. I am an A student and got a C in this course. He comes across as rude in emails, gives useless feedback and does not seem to want to see his students succeed. He marks hard and thinks that if you do not agree with him, you are wrong. English is supposed to be open minded especially a gender studies class. Avoid.
HORRIBLE. I am so upset that I had this prof. This class single handedly ruined my transcript. I am a straight A/B+ student and I got a freaking C. I am also an English major and got a C. He marks so hard its ridiculous. His feedback sucks, its vague and unhelpful. Regret taking this course with my entire soul. Avoid if you can at all costs.
I was so excited for this course but it turned out to be beyond boring and the prof just made it a million times worse. Would not recommend. Take a different class, avoid Terry. Yikes.
1 word. AVOID.
Honestly, the professor is a great person, but this is a really hard class. I do not recommend to anyone. A lot of the course content is extremely vile, and could trigger many individuals who have experienced trauma.
Don't take his online courses
Terry is kinda meh. He expects a lot from the discussion forums, be warned. The texts for this class were broken into creative and theoretical which I hated. It was more theory than an English class. he's an okay marker, getting Bs. you only have 2 essays and 2 exams which could be good or bad depending on you. he's ok. wouldn't take him again
Feels like he's phoning it in. Prof was very disengaged and showed little interest in the course or his students. This was my worst course all year.
Terry is the worst prof at York and should retire already. He is rude in all of his emails and is extremely unprofessional. If you are deciding to take a course with him please read these reviews they are telling the truth!! AVOID. He gives no feedback and is a tough grader for no reason.
Single-handedly ruined my GPA and I am an A/B student. I don't know how he isn't fired yet with the type of content he has been teaching. This course is the worst course you will ever take and having him makes it even worse. AVOID
assignments are 2 2000 word essays, weekly posts, 2 exams. Exams don't have word requirements. His lectures are very hard to understand and not well structured. Doesn't give feedback on your midterm so you have no idea what you did wrong. Essays are graded but feedback is vague. incorporate his ideas in lectures in your paper for higher marks
Prof is phoning it in. Doesnt seem to care about the subject anymore. It feels like he's tired of teaching and it really shows. Lectures are unenthusiastic and uninspiring. AVOID
this prof puts little to no effort into his job and it shows. unfortunately, students pay the price with their gpa
Literally the worst prof I have ever had just absolutely avoid him he literally does not care about the success of his students. I don't know how he is still allowed to teach.
Terry Goldie is an absolute gem. Riveting lectures, readings, and incredibly deep analysis make for a great class. 10/10 would take it again.
I did not enjoy this course, but a few of the readings were ok. This Professor is a tough marker and vague with his feedback, and hardly tells you what can be improved. And whenever I emailed him with questions, he would come across as rude. Don't recommend taking this course.
At first, I thought Terry was just rude to me via email, but it seems he's like that to everyone. He does not give clear, constructive feedback. He is not accommodating regardless of the circumstances and he's simply a poor educator. If you no longer have passion for your work AND students, please don't be a prof/teacher. AVOID.
Rude and unpleasant. Seems to hate teaching and students. There's no excuse for this. Students deserve a professor who at least cares about their teaching.
One term to appropriately describe this man: BEYOND IMMATURE. Does not want to help, is petty in his responses and overall not there to help his students. Making me feel incompetent because he is unclear. This will definitely make it to the Dean's office after the class is over. xoxo
I'd say this prof was phoning it in, but it was worse than that. It's like he can't even be bothered to phone it in. He seems hostile to even responding to emails or answering questions. Feels like he doesn't care about teaching and doesn't want to be here anymore. Avoid.
I don't understand how this person has this job. He doesn't give back and feedback or guidance of what he's looking for. The only way to pass this class is to agree with everything he says and forget that you could possibly have an independent thought in your head. One of the worst professors I've ever come across. Avoid him at all costs.
It's incredible what some of these older profs think they can get away with. Clearly doesn't want to be teaching anymore and treats you like it's a terrible inconvenience if you ask a question or want more than two sentences of feedback on your essay. I guess for some people tenure means they feel like they don't have to work anymore.
One word for him: unhinged. A TA marked my work so I got lucky. I was able to sit back and enjoy. The class was so funny. He'd reply to every discussion post even though there was 200 students. I'd sometimes go against his points just for the fun of it. He was really entertaining. Never had a personal issue with him and he was respectful to me.
I think you just have to go into this class with an open and accepting heart. He talks like Plato and loves to write in riddles when replying to your discussion posts but honestly, he just wants to debate with someone. Here's the secret: reply to him in riddles as well and he'll see you as an equal. Such a fun experience.
The worst prof I ever had. Rude and unpleasant. Acts like you're bothering him if you send him an email. Feels like he hates having to teach and doesn't bother putting in any effort.
Professor Goldie is inspiring. I engage with him frequently through the forums, and I learn so much from those interactions. My favorite part of the class is that, although it's asynchronous, it still feels interactive thanks to his efforts in replying to us and encouraging us to think more deeply about the topics and issues. Sad it is ending soon.
Goldie was nice enough in the forums but Gender Studies was a difficult class that required you to purchase and read a new book every week so I do not recommend. The essays and exams were given with a vague instructions besides use 'creativity and imagination,' and would hardly be given feedback if any.
Terry is a really great prof. You're expected to participate in weekly discussion posts. He responds to all discussion posts and you kind of get an idea of what he expects from you in your essays based on how he responds. It is very reading heavy though so expect to read at least 5 books during the year.
The absolute worst person at York and should not be allowed to teach. 0 constructive feedback, never offers any help, and does not appreciate differing opinions. You will never pass this class if you explore other angles of an argument. This professor accuses you of cheating even when you didn't.
When I first started this class and participated in the forums, I received some negative feedback that other classmates could see, which made me dread contributing. He came across as closed-minded and not very open to differing opinions. That said, his responses improved over time. He's also a tough marker and it is A LOT of reading.
Very confusing grader, if I'm being completely honest, I feel like he graded me based on how much he liked my answer then actually grading the discussion posts, then I realized that's just how he is and how he responded to people. You can tell which post he actually liked, and which ones where you didn't know got a 5/10 or a 9/10.
Confusing and disengaged. Feels like he hates his students hates teaching and hates literature.
I think he really cares about his students and he is easy to reach outside of class.
