Ruined my favorite literature. Taught me nothing whatsoever.
Super hard class, but taught me a lot about my writing.
It was a tough class but he was very helpful. If you have problems with the class and you talk to him he is very understanding and willing to work with you.
good take again
Easy enough just keep up with the journals
Didn't clearly explain his requirements, only collected homework twice throughout the semester and then asked us to grade ourselves. Tests were full of irrelevant material. I enjoyed some of the class discussion and I liked the material, but I wasn't excited about the class.
The class was terrible. He had no real syllabus. He didn't teach us anything- we learned everything from student power points... these from people that haven't ever taken this class before and, understandably, weren't as educated as a teacher needs to be. Then he would test us on irrelevent information. Don't take any class by this teacher!!!!!
I was really disappointed. I felt like I learned very little on Victorian and Modern Brit Lit. He brought nothing special to the content. pretty boring. Might as well read the textbook on your own time.
I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he's a terrible teacher! The students did all the work (powerpoints, quizes, scriptures, responses, etc.) You stress and stress about writing so much for a LIT class, and then in the end, you grade yourself. Don't take.
Really didn't like. I hate classes where the students do all the teaching. He doesn't seem to grasp how to connect to students. Definitely wouldn't take another class.
I hated the class and Bro. Gorton. The students taught the whole class throughout the semester. He was also rude, boring, and spoke about this Catholic/army background. Never take him, he was the worst English teaacher I've EVER taken!
Took British Literature from him. I used to like it, but I don't anymore--he really killed it for me. He often goes over the time alloted for class, and apparently the assignments he gave us don't really matter. Tons of work for nothing. Seems pretty liberal-minded as well-DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM HIM: he'll kill your love for literature.
Brother Gorton is smart and really want his students to succeed. He can be kind of scatter brianed at times, but he's very acomadating.
Brother Gorton is amazing! I was surprised at how many bad reviews he got because I loved him. He is really passionate about British Literature and has a very strong testimony of the gospel- he shows both of these aspects a lot. The class was really interesting but students teach a lot of the time and PowerPoints are shown a lot. Very caring & kind
I really like Brother Gorton's class. When you go to the first class his syllabus sounds really hard, but in the end he is an easy grader. This class is all about connecting literature to your life which I love. He doesn't lecture the whole class; there are lots of class discussions. Very nice person.Be prepared to do the reading.
Bro. Gorton is very nice, smart, and pleasant. He is, however, quite disorganized.
Brother Gorton has a kind, bold personality, and I can see how it would clash with many students. Great person, frustrating teacher. I took two classes from him and dropped them both because he drowns you in work. Also, it's a difficult class to really study for beyond the homework assignments.
I have heard many poor comments regarding this teacher. He is difficult and his classes do require a lot of work but it is worth it. If you really do your homework you will find he is actually testing you on what you learned. I have had this teacher for British Literature, Advanced Technical Writing and Shakespeare. If you work hard it will pay off
Brother Gorton has been one of the most inspirational teachers I have ever had. He has such passion to what he teaches and he teaches it well. He's very easy going, laid back, and so generous. I recommend him to ANYONE. He turned my most dreaded subject (history) into something I actually enjoy learning about! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Brother Gorton is hands down the best teacher for this subject. Okay, so this guy has taught everything from Physics to Shakespeare. He is a convert, and an ex-soldier. He seriously loves his students. This class was the easiest A of my life, but in all honesty, I learned so much as well. If you have the chance, take it from him!
This guy knows Shakespeare inside and out. Not a good class to take if your shy or hate group work because you will have to act scenes out of the plays and make a movie based off your interpretation of one of the plays. The other assignments help you understand the plays but some of them can be difficult. Usually the TA just grades for completion.
I had a really hard time caring about anything he taught. Going to class was useless as we learned everything for quizzes and tests online. Also, I you say anything in the class that he disagrees with, he either belittles what you've said or disregards it completely. If I could suggest anything, I would suggest taking this class online.
I think his class is awesome. I don't see why so many were complaining when they had to do "all the work", college isn't a freebee. What he taught I thought was applicable to life and not just to get a grade. I'll take him again if I get the chance.
I think he is one of the best teachers that i have had up here. He teaches you what you need to know, but makes history fun. He try's to get to know you as more then just a person sitting in his class. If i can i will take another class from him.
Took both of his World Foundations classes. He's a really great teacher, really funny, and was always super nice. Highly recommended!
One of my favorite teachers of all time. Funny, sweet, man that is very passionate about what he teaches. Tries very hard to learn every student's name.
He is an amazing professor! He is willing to work with you, if you have any issues! He is funny and truly cares for his students. I recommend taking him. Don't let his east coast personality scare you away.
It's a lot of reading and videos and study guides that are really random (the questions anyway). It's hard to study for the tests because they are random. He's a good teacher though: funny, nice, invested. He tells great stories (the same ones often). He's seemingly random but always relates it back to the topic. I'm taking him next semester too.
Bro. Gorton genuinely cares for his students. His classes thrive on discussion, and you learn a lot by doing homework in preparation. The homework often feels like busy work (because there's a lot), yet it helps you understand what you read. The schedule changes from time to time, so always refresh and check iLearn before starting your homework.
Bro Gorton is very friendly, encourages a lot of classroom participation, and even though he has you do a lot of busy-work, it helps you understand the readings. It's really easy to get an A in the class because he weighs the busy-work, tests and essays nearly the same, and you have fun learning in class.
Brother Gorton has a very dry sense of humor and seems abrasive at first, but as i got to know him i found him to be warm, sincere, and extremely profound. The course is straight forward. All assignments are on i-learn and as long as you keep up with the readings you can expect the grade you work for. Excellent class, and an even better Professor
at first i was very confused about the class and his syllabus. but it became simple. he does seem a little rough at first but he's happy to help & joke around. great discussions in class, his main focus. negatives: his thoughts on thesis paragraphs is redundant. his tests are hard and require you to remember who said what in which play.
It was a typical English Class. I would suggest clearing up any confusing parts of his syllabubs (for there will be a lot). There was no point of a class calendar, because he changed it daily. He doesn't understand Ilearn so hw assignments were never posted on time. The tests are hard, and he doesn't prepare you for them.
Loved it. Easy and great guy
I love Brother Gorton and think he is a true gem in the teaching world of BYU-Idaho. he is insightful, sincere, thoughtful, patient, and genuinely cares about his students and the material he teaches. I wish I could have Brother Gorton every semester. All the assignments are completed online, participation is mandatory and he is a fair grader.
The class itself is very interesting. It is pointless to go to class because he doesn't teach you anything other than go over powerpoints which are useless on your quizzes and tests.
His class is interesting but the way he grades us seems not fair.
Brother Gorton is one of my favorite professors. He loves what he teaches and is very involved with the students. He understands that you are a college student and that you have a lot on your plate. His class is entertaining and I love how we dive into the Literature. There a little assignments each class. Few tests.
Very good teacher, you will enjoy going to class
What a great professor! Easy class, easy(ish) homework, and tests you can study for in 20 mins. He's so passionate about his subjects, but he doesn't try to change your opinion. Kinda loud, but that's part of his charm. Best part, doesn't mind if you sleep in class. Which I do. A lot. Overall awesome teacher.
AT first it was confusing and he seemed rude. After a while it made a lot more sense and he became my favorite teacher. His gruff style is his way of showing that hes your friend. He is so passionate about the subject its contagious. He is very understanding. cancels class on essay and test days. lets class out early often. He learns names.
He seems rough at first, but you quickly realize he is a nice guy! The work is super easy if you stay on top of it.
Awesome teacher. It has been a few years since I had a class from him, but he was one of my favorites. And he still remains one of my favorites. Love his enthusiasm for the subject matter and his personable quality. He has a strong personality, but, for him, it's a strength.
GREAT professor! He might seem rough at first, but you'll warm up to him. His enthusiasm for the subject is evident in every lesson and easy to catch. The online work is tedious, but worth it. He has a great sense of humor and is gracious as well, he'll give you mercy if you have legitimate problems with something. one of my favorites!
EXTREMELY disorganized. Easy to get go grades even if you don't know what you are doing (which is most of the time for the whole class). Half of what he teaches is barely relevant or completely irrelevant to literary interpretation. Impossible to get help from when you need it. Overall nice guy, but I would not recommend him.
He's the nicest teacher I've had this semester. He actually treats us like human beings, and he obviously loves what he does.
He's a nice funny guy, but he isn't clear about homework. You show up to class and start talking about homework that you had no idea was even assigned. The workload is a bit too much compared to other foundations classes
He is definitely someone I highly recommend. More concerned about students learning and being their best than a lesson plan. Makes it fun but very spiritual as well. Makes jokes, and lets you (lovingly) tease him, and he will do the same. A good amount of work and tests but worth it.
This is my second class with him. He's disorganized often and he repeats himself a lot, so taking a second class can be a bit boring. BUT he's a fantastic guy who really cares about his students so I really do like him. There's a reason I took a second class from him. )
You don't know the meaning of busywork until you take a class from this guy. And to top it off, he grades on things not outlined in the syllabus. Boo to him.
As many have said, he is extremely confusing and disorganized. All of his instructions etc in I-learn are extremely long winded and very hard to understand. The guy simply does not know how to convey a message. I still don't know where the test questions come from.. you just have to memorize every little detail and fact of everything you read.
This class had a lot of work. I was confused most of the time, but I got through it. There are multiple assignments dues every time you come to class. I spent at least 4 hours a week on assignments. There are 5 essays for the semester. As much as this class was a nightmare of work, I loved his lectures. They were entertaining and I learned a lot.
You don't know the meaning of busywork until you take a course from him. Also, he grades on items not included in his 10 page syllabus.
Hate this guy. He has no idea what he's talking about. Save yourself and don't take a class from him.
I love Brother Gorton. I took his 251 class in 2012 and to this day he calls me by name on campus. He is wise and his lectures are enlightening. He cares about his students. I'm not obsessed with my grades but I'm pretty sure I got an A from him. I left his class feeling like I learned, and I think about the things he taught me still.
This guy was my favorite teacher ever! He made class fun and interesting, we only had four papers the entire semester, and then almost every class there was a reading assignment due. Besides that there wasn't a ton of work. As long as you turn things in on time you'll get an easy A. I got a 97 in the class for always tuning in my work on time.
Brother Gorton is a great professor, but the course is not the best. There is a TON of busy work that is required & it seems pointless. If you take this course, though, I would recommend Bro. Gorton. He is a very understanding teacher. Be prepared to read a few books (that are long) & write a couple of essays.
A very nice man, I enjoyed how he integrated the gospel into the subject, but his class is a lot of work with lots of homework. You have to stay on top of all the readings, quizzes, and papers due each week.
Bro. Gorton is a good guy. His class is very disorganized and I had a hard time understanding what was due when. He consistently changed workloads (which isn't bad) and due dates for assignments but did not change the calendar so class was confusing. The course was very casual and I didn't learn much I didn't already know. I'd suggest someone else.
Brother Gorton is very caring about making sure you better understand the principles of reading and writing. His goal is to make sure you become a critical thinker. he really helps you better your writing skills. his main grades come from the essays. they may seem like a lot but they will help you better understand yourself.
Brother Gorton gives out lots of assignments and homework, and his course is disorganized so it's difficult to stay on top when things are due. The subject material and books are interesting, and I didn't mind the lectures, but this was a difficult class to keep up with. I don't think I'd take from him again.
Amazing guy but I would not recommend him as a teacher. If you want an English class with around 40 assignments more than other English teachers give then choose him as your teacher. His classes were long and 90% of them were a waste of time. He randomly shouts in the middle of his classes too.. Very interested experience. Great guy but bad class.
He is an awesome teacher and he motivates us to follow a sacred path. Get ready to hear that expression a lot. The work for the most part was easy, but there is a LOT of homework! If you want to hear some stories take this class
Brother Gorton was a fantastic English professor. He is engaging during his lectures and teaches the fundamentals of writing in a way that is easily accessible. He tells great stories and makes each student feel valued!
Brother Gorton loves his students but his actual classes are basically pointless to go to. He also gives a ton of stories that don't have anything to do with English. He's a super funny guy too. I also only had to write four papers so that was also a plus.
I was a bit apprehensive about Brother Gorton after reading some of his reviews. I definitely learned a lot from him, he knows his stuff and cares about his students A LOT. There was a lot of reading and daily assignments but it wasn't too heavy. 4 tests based off of the at-home assessments and reading but no final. You'll definitely learn lots.
Great teacher, truly cares for his students pass his New Yorker sarcasm. He can honestly be a bit obnoxious however he makes the class really fun. Honestly, class isn't all that fulfilling when it comes to learning, but if your looking for a fun easy class, take it. The TA does all the grading, so if you can befriend the TA, you'll pass easily.
Ridiculous amount of homework for a foundation's class ON CAMPUS. With 3 hours of class time a week, you would expect to only have 6 or so hours of homework. Not this class. Expect to do twice that at least. All due before class. There is no regard to students having other classes that require their time as well. Poorly set up program, sadly.
He seems like a nice person outside of class but his complete lack of organization and planing drove me crazy. He made an easy and fun class complete hell to take. I dropped half way through the semester because I couldnt handle his disorganized idiotic way of teaching any longer. Sure he may be funny but that comes at the cost of your sanity.
I loved taking Shakespeare from Bro Gorton. I genuinely love him as a teacher and individual. If you want someone more organized, look into someone else. The class was sometimes chaos but I thrived in it. We read six plays, took 3 exams, did some performances and wrote one essay. Was a favorite for me.
Brother Gorton was a super fun teacher for Shakespeare. He is passionate about what he teaches and provides a lot of gospel insight that relates to the subject. You will read six of Shakespeares plays in his class, but he generally has you only read one act of a play before class. He is very discussion oriented, but you never feel forced to speak.
I think that a lot of students struggled with the class because of the workload. But hes friendliest guy I know. Still remembered my sister who took his class years ago. Hes got a strong New York personality. I find it massively endearing. And he gives plenty of homework, but Ive learned so much that I dont think I could have learned otherwise.
He literally every lecture was really to go. He is fairly easy to understand and has a New York personality. Brother Gorton really made this class worthwhile and a learning experience.
If you can avoid taking this professor, do it. Some problems include: Extremely disorganized at all times, makes it difficult to keep track of what work the students are supposed to do. Stereotypical "Older Better" mentality on everything Inserting political commentary into his lectures. Stereotypical doesn't understand new-age technology.
Brother Gorton was one of the best professors I have ever had. Technology was a challenge at times but I always left the class with a smile. As long as you do the work you'll pass the class. He is very understanding and will work with you. 10/10 would recommend his class.
Brother Goron is amazing, he is so spiritual and makes you work for your grades, he always starts the class with a joke, and he makes sure that you have a great analysis of the lectures.
He is a funny professor. There are lots of reading assignments. The course itself sucks (ENG150), it is hard but it has nothing to do with Brother Gorton. Sometimes, he gets off class early and that's great.
great guy, horrible teacher. Is oblivious, has an extremely cluttered and unorganized canvas, counterproductive teaching methods, unnecessary amount of homework, stuck in his own generation, throws in painfully forced humor that make you want to slap him, and is oddly pushy to get you to write about personal topics that shouldn't be shared.
He's extremely disorganized. He's a great person, but should not be a teacher. His Canvas setup is all over the place, there are typos everywhere in his PowerPoints & assignment descriptions, and he repeats the same things over and over. It's exhausting. He makes inappropriate, unprofessional comments to students and tries to make it funny. 0/10.
Gorton is a cool guy but there's so much homework every day of class. The assignments are due at the start of class, not midnight. All of the papers are writing about a personal struggle and he won't accept your topic unless it's super deep or personal. You also read those personal experiences in front of your peers, it's honestly uncomfortable...
Pros: He reduces the # of papers you write, says dad jokes, unique. Cons: In discussions he asks mostly questions to only get specific answers. He's been late to class and has changed it to be Zoom meetings
Has changed class to zoom or no class an hour before class. Has mandatory attendance but has been late to class twice himself. Has accepted phone calls in the middle of class. He has a semblance of organization but never follows it, often getting distracted or going on tangents that take over the class. Most of grade is based off of participation.
He is a really nice guy. He is pretty disorganized on Canvas, but other than that he is good. Many of the students would complain about the work he has us do, but it is an english class, so there is going to be homework and essays. He lets you choose your topics to write about, and helps steer you in a productive direction.
Brother Gorton has good intentions, and some good insights, but overall his class was awful and everyone in my class was constantly confused. He has no idea how to work Canvas, the site was completely cluttered and disorganized, and none of us ever knew what we were supposed to be doing. He also doesn't answer questions, just refers to the T.A.
Prof Gorton is a kindof nice guy, but he's just weird. He doesnt know how to work a computer at all, so on Canvas it looks like you have 20 assignments every night. He says that he's gonna make it so easy to pass his class and we should be thankful. It was not easy. His TA sucks. This guy needs to retire. His class is so uncomfortable and annoying.
Very unorganized, assignments are all over the place and hard to understand. Never stops talking, thinks he's funnier than he is. Frequently switches class to zoom sometimes less than 30 minutes before class. Assignments are often watching 20-minute grammar videos about things most of us learned in high school. Easy assignments and grading though.
He is amazing! He can be really disorganized sometimes and his canvas was a mess, but you'll never have a more upbeat, funny, spiritual professor. He is incredibly approachable, and is willing to help you succeed in any way he can, while still challenging you. This class is a lot of work, but I learned a lot and it was really enjoyable.
Brother Gorton is an excellent teacher. Gets off track quite often. In his 150 Writings class, I struggled with his essay topics. But, he is as genuine as they come. His class is always light-hearted. He loves to make us laugh, and he really cares about each of his students. I have taken two classes from him and I thoroughly enjoyed both.
Honestly I really enjoyed taking a class from Brother Gorton. He cares about each individual student so you feel like he wants you to succeed.
This guy needs to retire. His classes are like trying to recite the alphabet backwards after a bad hangover...in short you don't really get anything out of it. He tries to be, and thinks he extremely is, funny. Every class so far has just been him trying to make us laugh instead of actually teaching us. I wouldn't recommend him to any student.
Brother Gorton is a great person. He is caring and loves his students and can be a lot fun. However, he gets easily distracted and will often go off into a long story about his life. He gives a lot of homework. His TA does most of the grading. His canvas is disorganized and a bit frustrating.
This professor struggled to use Canvas which made classes much harder.
The canvas is very unorganized which makes it very hard to follow. Your canvas grade would not matter, he will give the grade that he thinks you deserve. I tried to reach out to him, but it seems like he does not like to talk to the students outside of class.
Professor Gorton has a quirky teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class can be quite enjoyable. Try unstuck AI and the free textbook to supplement the lectures.
Please be safe!
I like Brother Gorton as a person. He's kind, cares, and he's pretty funny. He also lets you decide your final grade for the most part. The issue I have with his class is actually how he requires you to share very personal and vulnerable information about your life with the class. Many students were very uncomfortable with this.
Brother Gorton cares about what matters in literature, rejects traditional interpretations of texts, is a free thinker, is deeply merciful, and is kind to the core. Lots of homework, but very interesting. Canvas is a mess, but you can figure it out. People that don't do homework or come to class don't like him.
he's a nice guy. but, his canvas is very difficult to use and many assignments won't work. he doesn't know how to use it. he comes in late every single class period, at least during the time that i had him. the class is 90 minutes, but he won't actually start teaching until it's been at LEAST 30 minutes, even then, he goes on long tangents.
Don't waste your time with Professor Gorton. He is a nice guy, but it is time for him to retire. If you take his class expect to have to navigate through disorganized textbooks, instructions, and content. You're mostly on your own. In class he will spend half of it taking attendance (if people are missing he might have YOU email them).
our class was very chaotic, uncomfortable, and filled with tangents. Many moments where I and other students felt this professor was asking too personal of questions and made insensitive comments. This was an in person class, but all of my learning took place through videos outside of class. This professor is extremely hard to get a hold of.
Bro. Gorton is a good person but a terrible teacher. His canvas is awful, yet he refuses to update it, which is a problem in a class with a decent amount of homework. He's confused, confusing, wastes time and can be very insensitive/controlling with essays. This class isn't crazy hard, he's sometimes funny/spiritual, but overall it's not enjoyable
