Gray was by far the worst teacher that I have ever had. He was useless. The homework was way too hard for the class. Chem 103 began with O-Chem basics. Gray didn't even discuss the periodic table until the second unit even though we had homework involving it. I would rather thumb wrestle with a lobster than take another class with him.
Gives extended deadlines on any and all assignments which is really much appreciated. This is the only good thing about Dr. Gray. He is a chem major that happens to teach Biology occasionally. However, he focuses on the chemistry part incredibly hard core and the class is incredibly difficult. I am an A student who almost didn't pass this class.
I'm a Health and Exercise Science major so I wasn't very interested in this course at all. Gray is not a good professor. Good guy, but terrible course to take. You have weekly homework on topics that he barely discusses, and the lectures are basically him telling you that we are destroying the planet. Test are also hard and like the homework.
He is so horrible at explaining things, will not elaborate in any way. Gives you weekly homework assignments over things that he did not even go over, and won't fix questions like putting Cl in instead of chlorine. All he does is rant and go on large tangents in class that have no application in our class. Barely passed, he is the actual worst.
Many people seem to dislike Terry. However, if you get to know him and ask questions, he's a pretty cool guy.
Aweful teacher, only reason i passed was because i had taken chemistry prior to the class. Just do the homework and go to his study secession's and you should be fine
Never take a class with Terry Gray. His lectures are boring and he says "um" between every word. His power points have no useful information for the homework and he does an awful job explaining. Most people get below a 70% on his tests. If you want to do good you have to teach yourself the material.
This class is doable, but only with a significant amount of you teaching yourself the material. What is said in the lecture can usually be learned just by looking at the PowerPoint on your own time. The lectures tend to be dry and hard to get through. Go to the review sessions before exams-they're extremely helpful.
Dude is so nice but so not helpful at all. Had to go hire a Tudor once a week the whole semester to teach me everything just to pass.
I did not cheat, take a major unit test (of three), or attend/watch about 70% of the classes. How I managed a B is a profound mystery that will haunt me to my grave. Content was very difficult and I only ever had a minimal understanding. He was also concerningly cavalier about why MacBook's mouse cursor was stuck at 600% normal size all semester.
Dr Gray is a seriously nice little old dude that is trying to make his classes more interesting and helpful. I really appreciate his effort, but I feel like meme where the dog bites its own leash while crossing the road the whole sem. Taught myself everything. Got the textbook immediately after suffering heart attack looking at my first test grade.
He teaches a 100 level class 300 level subjects that chem majors and TILT does not know how to solve.
He definitely has the passion for Chem, but I stopped going to class and just watched online after the first month. Even that I would fall asleep 1/3 of the time and have to rewatch the lecture after. Collaborate with other students to take the quizzes and you'll be good. Remember the class that works together passes together. DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK
drones on about unimportant things and passes over harder concepts.
actually (CHEM111), can not hold a lectures attention, no one pays attention. Agree with how he drones on about irrelevant topics instead of reviewing important things. annoying voice
Love this guy, hes so sweet!
He has the most monotone voice I've ever heard. No one pays attention, and instead does homework for just watches Netflix. He goes extremely slow, and I've learned everything from study groups and doing it myself. The only thing I've learned from him is how to use hand motions continuously while you're speaking.
WORST CLASS I have taken thus far. This is suppose to be the chemistry for non-science majors but we are learning stuff my friend is in OChem. He doesn't explain things well and expects us to know things he never even mentioned. Every test he has curved 10 points because too many kids were failing. Take Life 111 if you can and save yourself
I got a 95% in the class and couldnt be more unhappy with a course. Expect to have errors on the homeworks that go unfixed, to be tested on topics youve never even heard about, and to be stuck listening to the slowest lecture imaginable. Tests were curved about 10-15% I imagine. The whole semester was incredibly frustrating and a waste of time.
I 100% recommend courses taught by Professor Terry Gray. He is compassinate, has a good sense of humor, his lectures are clear, methodical, he is concerned about natural resoursces and sustainability, he is interesting - uses many styles of teaching in his lectures, he thinks on his feet, Professor Terry Gray is a good choice.
While this professor is knowledgeable, the average score on every exam is in the 60 range. He lectures slowly and gets off topic on content hardly related to the exam. His questions are poorly worded, although he is open to help when a student seeks it out! This class was hard to follow. Every exam was cumulative.
worst professor I have ever had in all 4 years of my college experience, he is a very smart man but a terrible teacher, he constantly puts students down for asking questions and teaches organic chemistry in an intro class, unless you have a lot of chemistry experience before taking his class do not expect a good grade
The only good thing about this teacher is he doesn't take attendance. Other than that, he is a terrible at explaining subjects and doesn't teach well. He makes a ton of mistakes when lecturing and has to constantly either correct himself or have a student correct himself. I've started going to a different professor who teaches the same class.
He is awful. If you ever have the chance to take a class with him, DONT. He doesn't teach the material he tests over, only touches on homework subjects AFTER they are due, and even at 2x speed on his online lectures, still manages to speak much slower than the average human. If you take his class, get ready to hear a lot of "ums" and regret life
Dr. Gray has by far been the worst professor I have had at CSU. He does not go over any useful material thats tested on. Overall I was failing the class until I started attending a different section with another professor. Next semesters registration has 120 waitlisted students for other sections and 17 available seats in his section. Interesting?
required for my major and this class is whack and makes so sense.
Dr. Gray's a pretty nice and easygoing guy. His lectures weren't very interesting though, and I think he could have explained the material better. What's nice is that he doesn't use iClicker questions, so you don't have to go to class.
G gets lip because CSU makes CHEM bad. G is fantastic. He cares about students and he's much better with the workload than other profs. His lectures can be long and drawn out, and a lot of the learning will be done online, but he's enjoyable in class. CHEM at CSU is bad. It is structured in a way where HW is EVERYDAY for over an hour. Not his fault
Dr. Gray is fine, but I did not always find him to be the most effective at communicating the content.
Avoid him at all costs. Gray does not care about you at all! He has actually stated in class that if you are failing/don't like his teaching style IT IS YOUR FAULT. I added the inspirational tag because he has inspired me to be anti tenure. He does minimal work as a teacher and he makes almost no effort at all to help you with issues in the course.
If you unfortunately have to take chemistry with him and you need help, go to another individual's office hours or get outside tutoring help. He will not help you and he will make you feel stupid for asking for help. For the sake of your GPA and sanity, do not take any chemistry course with Dr. Grey.
Dr. Grey is not a good professor. I went into his office hours for help on a specific problem after using all the resources available to students, and he still told me I was wasting his time. Watching his lectures of his only confused me more than if I hadn't watched in the first place. If you get the chance, take any other professor.
Dr. Grey's lectures are very long and boring. In the online format, he did not adjust any of his recorded content. This could be a problem in the department, but I would suggest taking this course with another professor.
I stopped attending lectures because every time I went he would start talking about something we took an exam in three weeks ago and had nothing to do with the upcoming exam. Also when I asked for an extension on one of our exams because I had to rush home upon finding out my dad was dying he told me to take the zero and get over it.
Dr. Gray does not put in any intentional effort to help his students succeed. On the first day of class he stated that he would make all our classes "his office hours" so it was almost pointless to go to class because there would be no instruction. I ended up attending other professors lectures because they actually taught in their classes.
Gray made gen chem 2 awful and also made me go insane. I received an A in gen chem 1 and im taking OCHEM right now and got a 97 on the first test, obviously I wasn't the problem. He talked about calculus for literally 2 lectures so I stopped watching them. Gray literally would laugh at questions I had. He was just awful. awful.
This is the second time I have taken Gen Chem. The first time was with Kerry McFarland and she was wayyy better than Gray was. Pretty much had to get a tutor for the whole year, not to mention make sure you read the book. Everything that shows up on the test is in the books, but Gray will not teach you everything you need to know.
I am a biology major. I have taken chemistry before (in high school). I was expecting this class to be hard but manageable. I was horribly mistaken. Dr. Gray is a very nice person but a terrible professor. His lectures are the opposite of helpful and I ended up trying to teach myself the entire course. If you can find another professor, do it.
I had Professor Gray for an online class at CSU taken over the summer, I am giving him a 3 because the reason his class was so bad could have also been due to it being online. He is strict, and his lectures are not helpful. I would not recommend taking his class, if you can take it through FRCC CCConline, do it. It's cheaper and easier.
He is the worst professor ive ever had, doesnt help students whatsoever and lectures make no sense
Gray is the worst professor ever. All he does is teach the same things that were on the textbook and he sucks at explaining. If youre able to read the textbook and understand the concepts youll be fine, otherwise youre screwed
Does not teach. Very boring. I think I have taught myself almost everything I know for this course. The recitation was my saving grace. I considered going to another professor's lecture and at this point I wish I did. The good thing is that there are many resources and practice tests that are very helpful.
Terry Gray is a menace. I had to start attending Mallory Menteles lectures because I was failing, and it barely saved my grade because Terry Gray just skipped so much material. He also is very difficult to understand when teaching, because he is old and is legitimately losing his communication abilities. (Maybe more).
Lectures are near useless and he will usually skip through the practice problem slides. He spent the first 2 whole days of class talking about Covid 19 (completely unrelated) and I knew then he really like to listen to himself talk. Half way through the semester I stopped attending his lectures and went to MacFarlands and they were wayyy better.
Very long winded but does his best to explain the material. The TAs help a lot in this course. The exams are harder than you think and there is near daily homework assignments. The lab was great and the recitation less so. Overall just an ok prof.
Lectures are pretty boring and sometimes not helpful
He's crazy about flipped classrooms but doesn't actually teach what you teach yourself he sucks
Terry honestly knows what he is talking about but is so incapable of communicating any information in a format that makes sense. Do yourself a favor and just take notes off of MacFarland's slides on canvas, she organizes things SO much better than he does and it's just not worth your time to listen to him lecture.
Although he enjoys science, he isnt very good at teaching it. His test and lectures were very different from each other. It was hard to learn in his class. I had to learn on my own. However the extra credit on the fourth exam really helped my grade. Hes nice but not the best teacher.
He cant teach
I didn't mind Dr. Gray, his lectures were slow but this was somewhat helpful for some difficult topics. I did find that he seemed a bit insensitive to some kids in lectures who appeared to have disabilities. He also did not respond to one of my emails asking for resources on how succeed in the class. Use tilt and do all homework.
If you don't like Dr. Gray's lectures just watch the other professor's lectures online. They run the course together, the assignments and exams are all the same. There is a TON of homework. The recitations have required attendance...it's a dumb reason to lose points in the class. Do and understand the practice exams and you'll do alright.
Gray rambles a lot and his lecture slides come straight from the textbook, which does not make much sense in the first place. Early on in the semester, I stopped attending his class entirely. Watch MacFarland's lectures instead! Using her materials is what got me through this class.
Gray was awful. After the first day of class, I stopped attending his class and instead watched McFarland's classes. Gray would ignore my emails and when I told people I had Gray as a professor, I was met with a series of "I'm so sorry" followed by, "yeah I can see why you're struggling, he can't teach". Don't take his class.
He's so annoying I hate his voice so so so much, he doesn't teach he just talks, he's all over the place and never can focus on one thing
I effectively had to teach myself all these topics to pass. His lectures are constantly scattered making them confusing and just a total dread to listen to or try to understand. Yet 100% of his class is lectures. He's not a good teacher as well as frequently goes off-topic about random things.
bad lectures
Dr. Gray makes up for his slow pace in lecture with lots of McGraw-Hill reading assignments, expect 3 or more per week. Expect lectures to cover material from last week's homework with lackluster explanations and examples. Attendance is mandatory in recitation; in class, it is taken via discussion posts, so you can just watch online for that.
I went to 3 lectures for the entire semester and decided that after earning a 5 on the AP chem test and being great at chem to start, that if he confused me on naming things on the periodic table it wasn't worth it. Now all I do is the practice exams a couple days before test day and have never gotten a score below 100%.
Extremely boring class, he does not teach he simply reads off the slides and takes forever to progress through them. I had to learn everything on my own and the class is 100% lecture based. His voice is so monotone and it is nearly impossible to pay attention.
Sweet man but oh my god not a good lecturer at all. Best way to get through this class is to try to get 100% on the homework and do the practice exams over and over to study. He doesn't take off points for hw being late and he curves the exams so that'll help. He also gives a bonus exam that can count as its own exam and replace your lowest one
If you have the option to not take him for chem, do it. He just rambles and I did not go to his classes after the first couple months. I would not recommend him although he seems like a nice guy.
I don't have terrible opinions on teachers--Terry Gray was anything but good. He wrote his textbook, it's only available thru purchase on Apple/Amazon books + it doesn't make much sense. Runs his lectures up til the end of class. Homework every week, it's mainly what you should focus on for studying. Some of his answers on the homework are wrong.
What a waste of time and money. This professor needs to retire. He teaches his class like its review for everyone and not new content. I am so close to having to retake this class again because I got stuck in this professors lecture. His lectures testing scores are well below the averages of other professors, and many students are failing.
Really boring lectures, is not engaging and looses train of thought very often. Could not attend lecture and watching the other professors lectures was so much better.
DO NOT, and I mean, DO NOT take chem with him as your professor! He reads off of slides every lecture and doesn't teach it and makes no sense. You are better off learning on your own. Even TAs tell me he's not good. I had a family emergency and he didn't do anything to help me. Take any other professor, I promise you!! Chem with him was a struggle!
The lectures are what we go over in Recitation and Lab. If you take this class focus more on homework (10-15 percent) and what to study for the next test (66 percent of grade), and do the lecture attendance for extra points. I got a bad grade because I suck at math. :/
If you have SDC accomodations, he's hesitant to allow them in class/for exams. Isn't knowledge about the content (even admitted that he hasn't read the textbook). He is a tenered prof. Goes off on many tangents that aren't related to class material. I never went to lectures about 1 week and did fine. His office/CLERC hours aren't useful either
I don't usually have problems with professors, but he just does not lecture well and his lectures don't include words only images half the time. The textbooks are his books but they are hard to understand, only cheap compared to normal textbook prices. For a beginner chemistry course it was hard and I had to withdraw to prevent failing the class.
He's a good person but not a good professor. Honestly a veryyy boring class. He literally just points at things or reads then and expects you to get it from that. 4 total exams, first two are closed book, last two you can take a cheat sheet and theres a bonus exam made up of commonly missed questions from previous exams. Pretty fast paced.
Gray is a very kind man, but his lectures are very hard to follow. He records them so attendance isn't mandatory. As far as exams, focus on studying the practice tests and homeworks. The exams are hard but he curves them so that helps. Also the bonus exam at the end of the semester helped bump my grade. You pretty much have to teach yourself.
WARNING: DO NOT CHOOSE THIS PROFESSOR. Sweet person but teaching is not for him.
who let this man out of gen chem? he seems like he has no idea what he is talking about
has no idea how to work technology, seems to not know how to teach and says his career is going out of business. Mark your days Terry Gray, people think you cannot teach.
he a yapper but seems like a chill guy so far. no participation, all lectures are on canvas. ill let yall know how the first exam goes
This professor is the most difficult professor to work with. He doesn't give good lectures, and he expects you to read all the information you should get in the class, out of the book. NEVER take a class with Terry. He doesn't listen to his students, and he is not very good at teaching.
not giving info making content hard to grasp. Might be the worst at explaining and covering material. I understand due to another class that provides all needed info and more. From Terry Gray I feel Ive learned nothing, and many have similar issues in his lower-level courses His teaching style lacks clarity and engagement making learning difficult
you should NOT take a class with terry gray, for the better of your sole you should avoid this at all cost. He is terrible at explaining information, acts like he is constantly confused, terrible at presenting will stare at project going "uhh" and today he taught a theory, telling the class it is true. when in reality it was disproven in 1950's.
This is Dr. Gray's first time teaching a chembio class, so I give him some slack. But I will say that the tests are difficult and the homework wasn't really helpful. The lectures are a slog to get through. If you wanna succeed in the tests this is what you should do: When he gives you the list of topics, use AI to generate practice exams, it works.
In this class Terry Gray is a great person but in all honesty not a great teacher. He rambles off of slides, and really there only a couple slides a day throughout the lecture. His teaching style is boring, and his tests are extremely difficult, but are curved for that reason. I would not take this class!
Do not take Chem with this professor. He seems like a nice guy but he can't teach the material. He will go off on tangents about random things and fall behind in class. Sometimes he keeps going after class has ended. I wish I stopped showing up to lectures and just taught myself everything because the lectures are confusing.
I went to his class for one month, realized he only went through about half of the content in the required reading from the night before per lecture, and basically treated it like an online class for the rest of the semester. He's a good guy but I did not learn a thing from going to his class, it just felt like I was wasting time being there.
He is a nice guy, but I will say the lectures are hard to follow along with and they're boring. The tests are hard but I think it's because grasping the content that is taught is difficult. I did have a couple days where I enjoyed the class but most of the time I was not super engaged.
nice person, horrible professor. One of the worst I've taken at CSU
He's a nice man but unfortunetly just not a good professor. He goes off topic a lot during lecture and basically just reads off his slides otherwise. There's homework every week and a good amount of exams which were very hard. If this class is not necessary for your major I would recommend you to not take it.
This man has dementia and can't explain basic chem concepts. Exams are horribly hard, his lectures are awful and confuse you. Your best bet is to never show up to lecture and go to the chem center to help you, or else you will not pass. Extremely frustrating 'on tenure' professor. Genuinely needs to step down; he can't speak a coherent sentence.
Not that bad. Never went to lecture or got the textbook but he posts a huge list of topics for each exam and a practice exam, using those I never got lower than a 79 on the exams. There's enough resources to do well and he is very kind and cares. He is VERY monotone and can't explain well. Dont go to office hours, go to the chem center.
