Well, in his lab class, we need to be extra careful when doing experiment. But, my lab report is never get the perfect grade. Sometimes even i get bad point.Overall, he is okay. Better than Lowe lab class i think.
I was discouraged to get a B in this class after getting straight A's in chem 103. I just couldn't understand anything he was teaching. I would ask him to go over it again & I still didn't get it. He's very educated & tries very hard, maybe it's just me.
Hot, hot, hot. Love the sideburns. A bit of a taskmaster, however, he is ready to help if needed. Much better than the other instructors...
Mr. Miles should not be teaching. He teaches very poorly and is too uptight. When asked for assistance, He's unclear and always tries to cover up with saying "My Bad". He over does it on his tests and writes them out to a level which is not appr

Better Than J. Lowe , but still tough
Pretty hard grading but helpful if you dont bug him.

Mr. Miles, is the best instructor. Not only did he change my view of chemistry but I became particularly interested in his idea of Pulsed low resolution NMR, solid state NMR, quasi-elastic neutron and light scattering, together with chemical modification

His test are pretty difficult, but if you do the assigned homework problems (especially the cumulative skill ones) you should be okay. Overall, he is helpful and wants you to learn the subject, and will spend time trying to help you. Be warned that he does grade especially hard.
he is a robot...he doesn't care if you have other things to do...he'll just pile on lots of work. out of all the professors i had at citrus, he's the only one that i have not really enjoyed.
Miles is an awesome teacher and quite and inspiration for those that are into actually thinking going deep into the field of chem. People are just whining because they don't want to study.
Just to warn you, his class is VERY challenging! Chem 110 was SO easy compared to this. Miles does know what he's talking about, but unless your a genius it's hard to understand the material. His tests are horrible. In order to pass you NEED to understand how to do the comulative skills problems, an
he's crazy hard...and i'm totally afraid to make any jokes or be friendly with him
BE AWARE ALL! DO NOT CHEW GUM IN THE LAB OR ELSE HE WILL KICK YOU OUT! SERIOUSLY. I DID NOT KNOW WE WHERE STILL IN JR. HIGH! HE WAS NOT NICE AT ALL.... VERY INTIMIDATING ACTUALLY.
lack of teaching skills, boring lecture, unreasonable amount of works. wasted time and energy. sincerely recommend him to take a course of EQ 101
He teaches us more than the basics of this class needs so I think it will be very helpful when taking other chem courses. He grades hw pretty hard but his sample problems are just like the ones in the test and he often takes hw problems and puts them into

Chemistry is hard, accept it. Miles will teach it to you if you're willing. I came in with NO chem knowledge and I got a B. I did most of the homework. His tests mirror class examples and homework so stay involved. He is very smart and willing to help go to his office hour if you have a question that's why he's there. Hes a cool guy just don't waste his time.
miles is a great teacher. he is very hard, but you learn alot from him and are well prepared for future classes. and he is not intimidating like the comment below says. he is always willing to offer help! i love chem 111 because of him!! i'd take it again!!
AVOID AT ALL COST! i used to love chemistry and he totally ruined it for me. i'm sorta learning, but he doesn't make it fun, so it's hard to learn things that aren't fun and interesting.
miles is one of the best teachers at citrus. i walked into his class disliking chem and left loving it. he's a nice guy, clear, well-oraganized, and very helpful. do your homework and go to class everyday and you can get an A.
Very tough class but very thorough. Lots of HW assigned but it all helps for the exams. Labs are difficult but I learned a lot. His lectures are all done on PowerPoint and are downloadable before the class so it is easy to take notes. Just make sure you stay organized and don't fall behind.
yea miles is hard, this is def true, but he is very prepared and clear in his lectures. I think his passion for the subject gets the students excited, this class is not for slackers, but if you're really into science and are going in that direction, i highly recommened him, you'll learn alot, this clas was worth my money for the amount im learning.
I never understood the way he explained the lessons, and very unapproachable. I hate this class.
Miles was hard, but so is chemistry in general. He was very organized and as long as you did the homework and required reading the class was easy. He was a totally cool teacher with awesome labs!
Yep. Mr. Miles is hard but he is very helpful for all of student who want to prepare for chemistry to go to a university. Just do home work, practice and read the book as much as you can. Then, you can get an A.
He makes an easy subject hard & complicated. He loves to use those too-formal,hard-to-understand terms & always presumes we know them.Lecture notes are just as bad as his lectures.I got other book from library & it makes me understand the same subject millions times better.Worse is, u'll stay long in the class. My least liked teacher in the college.

Thinks he's a walking encyclopedia. Ms Lowe wasn't easy, but she was so much easier to understand.
If Miles would actually further his degree I could see him teaching at a 'real' institution. You can not rely solely on his lectures, you need to read the book. But do pay attention to the lectures... pay enough attention and they'll start to make sense. He's very quick and procedural, don't hate him for it, it's college, that's expected of you.
It is not that hard to get an A if we try the best. Practice sample tests carefully and you will get an A.
This teacher is not hot and he is by far the worst teacher. His lectures aren't clear, he cheated me once out of passing his final and he plays favorites. I question his techniques as a chemist and would avoid him at all cost. He makes things more complex than they actually are and quite frankly I have no idea why he's still teaching. Avoid him...
Chemistry is not easy nor is miles. But if u study the old tests you shouldn't have that much difficulty. People take this class and think their highschool knowledge will be enough to just cruise through. I recommend taking 110. Be ready to work hard. You learn chemistry and how to write great lab reports, which helps in other classes.
My main problem with miles are his lectures. They are often unclear and he presents the material in a very un organized way.He gives an average amount of homework. You need to study alot for his tests. Study the book and memorize what he tells you to memorize. Chem is not a subject you should expect to breeze thru but miles makes the subject harder
Mr. Miles is unreasonable with some of his exams. With that said, Mr Miles does make up for it with his great understanding of Chemistry. He is the kind of prof. you truly hate during the semester, but then appreciate for getting you well prepared for next class. Proceed with caution. . . .
Miles is not so bad. If you are willing to work hard you can get an A. He really knows his stuff, and you will be well prepared after leaving his class
He is a good teacher if you are willing to work very, very, very, very hard! Also, he can be kind of a scary man, at least for me he was. I got an A, and he was always nice to me. I say go for it, and take him *evil laugh*
Mr. Miles is not as hard as people think. Last time I took chem was in high school 12 YEARS AGO and there were only two things I remembered: there is a periodic table of elements and that atoms contain electrons. THAT'S IT! If he's so terrible, how did I get an A? "Ye can lead a man up to the university, but ye can't make him think."
Great teacher lets you know everything you need to pass the tests. This is a hard class but well worth it if you are planning to go to 111.
He's not that bad. He's a great prof., just a little hard to approach b/c he seems indimidating. he teaches very well and very understandable, but he's a tough grader and his tests are hard. you really have to work VERY hard to earn your grade. Friendly, and very helpful.
Lets see i had him for his lecture the 2days he talks w/ a high vocab. that will loose you,so i transferred out.I kept him for lab, but he has no personality otherwise,i feel like he likes to see students fail, hes a hard grader, but yet again very knowledgeable about the subject. If you have a question he will indirectly help you. Take Farahani!
He seem unapproachable at first but he is actually pretty funny and cool once you break through that barrier. People make him sound so bad and hard, but he is not. Do the homework study from that and the quizzes and you will do well.
He is so helpful, but so hard. But so HARD. I like his class.
I tried so hard in this class, we studied in study groups for hours at a time and i tried with my hardest to pass this class. He knows i did yet i was given a D. I wouldnt take him and i heard the chem dept. @citrus is bad so if i was u i would take it at a diff school. Now i have to take it over again..ughhh
I would not recommend taking this teacher unless you are majoring in Chemistry. He talks very quickly and uses a high level of vocabulary so you don't really know what is going on,also useless when you ask him for help. His quizzes are hard. Read the textbook, it does a good job of explaining the material. He makes the class hard.
This is a very very good professor and his lectures are awesome. Take him for Chem 103 or 110. That should be fine if you put a little time into it. However, Chem 112 is a nightmare, he will work you to death!!!!!! You really have to work very very hard.
miles is hot. i dont know what it is, but he is..i think its cuz hes so smart. neways his class is hard. his teaching style is different, and his grading is harsh. there's no getting on his good side so dont try. i had him for lab and hes super picky about lab reports. overall, hes okay but you hav to be COMMITTED to chemistry to pass.
This class took up so much time, but it wasn't that bad. It's not as daunting as ppl make it seem. Mr. Miles was always willing to help, if you made an effort to ask. His lectures were super detailed and much more useful than the crappy textbook. Put time into this class, and you'll do well. He's a very good instructor
this professor is the worst at citrus! i had always liked the proffesors here but this teacher killed it. he is a very hard grader and does not know how to connect with his students. there is alot for him to learn to be a good teacher. i would definatly not EVER take him again and you shouldnt either.
Mr. Miles is a decent professor, however he grades very hard. Try not to take this course during a 6-week session if you can. I think if I took this course during a regular semester I would have done a lot better. The other people on here are wrong. Miles isnt horrible, but don't expect an easy A!
Miles really isn't a bad teacher! Although understandable that he is a hard grader. He is very knowledgable and knows his stuff. Initially, he seems intimidating, but is actually funny and helpful. He is willing to help if you ask for it. Miles makes material easy to understand, but you have to work hard for that A. I would take him again--hes good
miles explains material but doesnt go over difficult problems unless you ask him. he is a fair teacher, do your work and ask questions and you should be fine. and he doesnt really laugh at anyones jokes, just his.
He's good but you have to try so hard!!!
He's a decent teacher. His tests are very hard, and the questions are not worded like any of the example problems that are given. If you want to have a decent grade, you have to try REALLY hard.
Mr. Miles is an excellent lecturer and is not at all intimidating to approach. He is, however, one of the strictest and hardest professors you will find at Citrus. If you take Chem 112, he only hands out at most 2 A's per semester, and you have to work your ass off and be a genius to get the A. You still have to work to death to get a B.
He is a good teacher. But lesson time is limited, so read a book, it is very helpful. His Exams - no more than job in class and homework, so you can prepare for exam pretty well.
Miles is more of a chem major teacher. i had him for a non chem major class and it was a nightmare. im an A/B student and i struggeled the whole semester to keep a C. hes a hard grader and don't even bother asking him a question in class cuz he just goes overboard with explaining the answer and it just confuses everyone. by far my hardest class.
His communication is poor. He's too technical in the words he used that makes people confused. Genchem shouldn't be hard to understand or explain. But if Miles can't even get his points across then however he makes the test no one would understand the concept. Most people who passed the test memorized and guessed the format, ie. use this formula.
Please do not take this class over the summer break! Half of the class was re taking the class and the other class was failing! If you absolutely have to take this class, the only way to get a B is to study 24/7 he does not give out A's and if you are doing well he will take off points for no reason!
Miles is a good professor but he can be extremely confusing at times, making things sound much more complicated than they are. He explains problems as if they were definitions. I'd compare his style to that of a text book. Put it this way, I learned the material before I went to class, and forgot it by the time he was done lecturing.
let's put it this way, he does not make the class any more interesting or easier to do well in. I had more fun reading the text book than attending his lectures. furthermore, he doesn't relate to his students at all, he's on a whole different page if you catch my drift.
It's unfortunate that this man is the only instructor for chem112. The entire chemistry department at Citrus College needs a make-over.
His lectures are pretty uninspiring, when I don't understand I ask a question and never understand his answers. I learn most of the material from my lab instructor, Mr. Smithe, who puts things into terms I understand, and doesn't finish with me until he knows I understand. I often skip this class and when I do attend I bring other things to do because it is so boring and robotic. I understand more from reading the book.
I must admit, miles is pretty smart. I can't understand half the stuff he explains in class. The book is like a dumbed down version of his lecture. So I recommend that you use it to your advantage. As someone previously commented..he'd be a great professor for students majoring in chemistry. I'm taking him right now for summer session and what is helping out the most is using the hints on the hw and using the book to translate his lectures into English.
I don't understand why this professor gets such a bad rap. He is super smart, and that is a good thing. You don't want some dummy teaching you chem. Yes he's difficult and he requires a lot of work but its chemistry. It's supposed to be that way. I recommend, stay on top of your work and studying and you will do just fine.
Do not take this professor. This is basic chem and he is making it harder than it is. His grading system is too hard on students. He can turn an A student down to a B student easily. His tests are challenging and is very anal on reports. He takes off points just because..if you try to argue with him, good luck..he always win. Good Luck!
First off, the subject is already extremely difficult. Secondly, he does not make it any easier to understand. He explains things ONE way and only once. He definitely does not connect with the students and is cold and aloof.
One of the hardest professors you will ever face.Sad to know he is the only CHEM112 professor.Study is mandatory!Do as many problems as you can to have basic idea of his exams.Grades hard on quizes and labs.Tests are hard but there are questions that are going to be easy.Do a lot studying and praying and you will do fine.
Really smart instructor. Knows what he's talking about. Sometimes gets unclear, but he's willing to help and clarify things if you ask. He's strict on lab attendance, but other than that, you'll do fine if you study and do your masteringchemistry.com hw. Currently I have an A in his class this Winter sem.
He was a very strict professor when it came to lab reports. However, he did give partial credit if you attempted to answer the test questions. In the beginning he was intimidating, but with time he became more approachable. His tests, in my opinion were more clear than other chem professor's tests. Overall he is cool. I loved his class!Study a lot
This is one of the greatest professors you will ever have. I took him for chem 110 and chem 112. His class is not easy and you will need to work hard and be prepared for lectures and labs. He has low tolerance for stupidity. These people that complain do not study and expect an A. They are in for a surprise at the upper div level. Smart/Caring prof
Expect to study a lot. That's a given. His lectures are dry and he moves very fast, so you will have to read your book or find other sources to understand the material. Very strict on detail. Kind of intimidating.Good luck. I worked my butt off and only got a B.
Class was very hard but then again it is the last general chem. He makes lab and lecture nearly impossible to get an A. i got an A, but then again i am a genius :)
This class was definitely not easy. Expect to make this class your life if you want an A. He is willing to help during his office hours. He is extremely picky when it comes to the way he wants his lab reports done, but he will tell you what he wants in them during his office hours. Lastly this guy is really smart & knows his stuff. You'll learn.
I took Chen 103 in the summer most of my class mates complained about how unfair his grading was but I paid attention to what he wanted and got an A on almost everything. Study a lot! If you take the time you'll get the grade. Listen to the details about how he wants things and you won't get marked down. And he's a lot nicer to people with good grades.
One of the very best Professors around! The guy should be teachingat Oxford, Yale, or some prestegious school. He was helpful, nice, and if you asked questions, he answers. You can't slack off in his class. Once you slip a few times, you fall behind. But this is COLLEGE. DO YOUR WORK. He was Easy, got a B. I will take him again!
Professor Miles has a very difficult class! Especially if you take it in 6 weeks. It's possible to get an A if: you do All the hw, have thorough prelabs, and take good notes. ALSO go to tutoring with his assigned tutor. He emails all the practice tests that are identical to the actual test.
I had professor Miles for Chem 110 and Chem 112. I am now a student at UCLA, and I think professor Miles is one of the best, most helpful professors Ive ever had. He is passionate about the subject and very smart. You will learn from him, but you won't earn an easy A
He's straightforward in lectures and lab; many who did not have him for lab wished they had him for lab! With that said, this class was extremely hard. He is a very tough grader. I studied really hard for this class and did not get an A. Make sure that this class is the main class of your semester, and you will probably get an A.
He tells you from the first day of class of what is expected out of the students. He is a very thorough teacher and gives detail of exactly what he wants in labs and lecture. If you put in the time and effort, its possible to get an A. I enjoyed professor Miles and would take him again for future chemistry courses!!!
Very knowledgeable professor! He looks serious sometimes, but he is approachable when you ask him questions. I took him for Chem 110 and 112. I really enjoyed his classes. Got an A on both classes
Miles is a brilliant chemist and he holds his students to a high standard. Tests were always harder than the examples he went over. You need to do every possible HW question to prep and review old midterms. He's heavy handed with his red pen and is not afraid to dock points. Be thorough on lab reports and ask him when you need help on the material.
He's the man when it comes to chemistry. Very knowledgeable and explains everything clearly but you have to study a lot by your own. It's the last General Chemistry class and he expects you to work a lot with him. Highly recommended if you're looking forward to gain a good chemistry background. Strict on lab reports, keep that in mind.
He moves quickly through the material, sometimes confusing. Homework was relatively easy, its done online. There is homework, pre-labs, lab reports, quizzes, and exams to worry about. A lot of work. You don't have to memorize formulas for exams, he writes them on the board. The final was NOTHING like the first 3 exams we took, so it was HARD.
Great teacher!!! I took this Spring 2014. Yes, it is a tough subject but Prof. Miles is a really great teacher!! I do not know why people say that he is mean and terrible. He is just tough and reasonable. By far the BEST teacher for Chemistry that I have ever taken.
Very knowledgeable, nice guy. He seems like a tough guy but he's really cool when you go to see him during his office hours. His tests are absolutely brutal!!!!! He will drop one exam though and replace it with your final if you do well on the final. Don't take this class with other hard sciences!!!
Attend lectures, bring textbook, and take good notes during class. Review notes before tests, because test questions are very similar. He is a tough lab report grader. Quizzes are super easy and are exactly like the problems sets. Do the homework practice problems as well, even though you don't turn them in; they help with the test.
Though Prof Miles is good looking, man was he a tough grader. Just be reaaaally thorough with your lab reports and you wont get a big NO from his little comments. Study up for the quizzes he gives. His lab class is doable. Just make sure you do everything based on his instructions.
I took him for lab and lecture and lab reports ware tough. He is very strict when it comes to the rules. His lectures are easy and can easily get an A if you do his past exams. Follow the rules and you should be fine. he isn'y very friendly but will help if you ask.
Miles is by far the best Chemistry teacher at Citrus. His lectures are extremely clear and the lecturesproblem sets have problems very similar to ones on the exams. Goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material. Highly recommend taking him for 110 and 112.
The class is pretty tough.. You have to be thorough with the lab reports cause he reads everything. everything... Very knowledgeable. The tests are brutal but the class is passable. If you can do all the problems he assigns(optional hw) then you're gucci.
The thing is: Prof Miles IS a cool guy--for one, he's fit; he is clear in his instructions expectations & he always leaves his door open if you need to visit him. The only things that make his classes extremely difficult are: he rushes through explanations procedures & seems frustrated if you don't understand. Gives off "drill-instructor-vibe".
To pass his class you have to read the textbook its a MUST! He goes over examples from text in class and there's similar ones but not the same on the test. KNOW YOUR CONVERSIONS!!!! That's what you do throughout the semester!!!! Def not an easy class but if you stay up to date on reading the textbook U will be fine. Stay on top of doing online HW!
Never have taken chemistry before this class. This dude teaches in an easy to understand type of way, easy to understand if you can stay awake in class that is. He's VERY monotone. Tests are straight forward, no surprises. He's not the best professor ever, but he's far from the worst.
You cannot blame him or your failure in his class. Yes, this class was difficult (primarily because this was my very first time learning about Chemestry), but if the student puts all the effort you will pass! I spent hours and days practicing examples and reading and managed pass the class. He doesn't grade tough and gives credit for trying!
He's tough. Lots of coursework and a strict timeline to finish it. The theory is dense and requires intense attention to detail. Make sure you have enough time to dedicate to this class before registering, you will spend most of the semester studying for his tests. That being said, this professor prepares you for university level coursework.
Took the class in Winter. Tough if you're not good in math but doable. Know your CONVERSIONS, POLYATOMIC IONS, & make the PERIODIC TABLE your BFF! Take your time doing the pre-labs, homework, labs, tests, & quizzes. Study really hard! Labs are fun! Miles explains everything in detail yet some things he expects you to already know. GOOD LUCK!
i had prof miles for lab. it was sooooooooooo easy. he spoon feed u the procedure and answer any questions u have. he writes very organized notes on the board so its impossible for u to mess up. he is a little tough on grading ur report tho. but after a while u know what he looks for and it gets better.
Professor Miles is one of the best chemistry instructors in Citrus College. He is super organized, returns quizzes and exam the next session after taking them. Gives good feed backs on reports and exams. Homeworks are optional, but questions in exam are similar to the hw questions.
Dr. Miles does a great job of explaining a complicated subject. The class is highly conceptual with a great deal of math and equations. Be ready for long nights and long lab reports.
Great professor. Very organized and clear lecture notes. As long as you pay attention and follow along you'll be prepared. He's also always around to answer any questions.
First of all, he is very attractive! Moving on, this was probably the hardest class I've taken! I took it during summer, so it was fast paced. If you are a slow learner or not motivated, then do not take! He looks at EVERYTHING you write so be specific and accurate! Overall, he is very nice, knowledgeable, and a great professor. Got a low B.
I genuinely believe he's passionate about Chemistry, obviously he became a professor. However, I believe his teaching techniques could be modified. It just felt distant. Then again it was a 7:35 a.m. Lab & lecture. There's hw with strict due dates, lots of lab reports & working with chemnet as well. Not an easy A, you must earn it.
Very organized. You need to do lots of problems, and take notes during the lecture. The exams are tough, but he curves the first one. If you do the problem sets, and the problems he assigns for further practice you'll earn A.
Professor miles is a very intelligent instructor who lets know what to expect. His lectures are very easy to follow and will answer any questions you have. The exams are challenging but the optional homework and the problems sets will get you prepared. Overall a very great instructor who knows what hes talking about. Highly recommend his classes.
Professor Miles was an amazing chemistry professor!! He's an amazing lecturer, but you definitely have to go to class in order to fully understand the material. He doesn't use PowerPoints but have his own typed up documents that outlines the entire chapter which are really helpful. I studied hard and got an A!
Chem 110 was the holdout for my Kinesiology transfer, and I'm glad I took it w/Prof. Miles. He has clear expectations, is approachable, and clearly loves chemistry. Lecture was super dry, but lab was where chem really came alive for me. Go to office hours, follow lab report instructions to the letter, and study your lecture notes for tests.
Prof Miles is top notch! Honestly one of the best professors in the STEM department by far! You must do all the work in order to pass no skipping assignments especially if math is not your strong point. He pays attention to detail but he is VERY clear in what he needs from you Just talk to him and he will be super helpful. You will work for that A
Professor Miles, is a great teacher. I took him for winter semester and it was tough. There was homework and a lot of studying to do. He is very clear on what he wants and what to expect on his exams. He has notes for you to print out on canvas and gives you quizzes with similar questions that you will see on the exam. I def. recommend him.
Prof Miles is a good professor, his lectures are straightforward & go over the kinds of problems you can expect to see on the homework. His tests are hard & have some cumulative problems. I put in a lot of effort and studying but the cumulative problems were my downfall in the class. Make use of his office hours if you struggle with chemistry.
His lectures are very clear and he posts the notes on canvas for each lecture and the test answers after the test grades were posted. For 110, attendance isn't technically mandatory, but those who didn't go did very poorly on the tests. Also, the access code for the homework is very expensive, but you need it to do well on the tests.
Mr. Miles is one crazy smart guy. Come to class prepared and be on time or you will miss things. Be prepared to work for that A or even a B as he is a meticulous grader, but if you listen to what he tells you to correct getting 100 is easy. He's really funny, but it takes him time to warm up. Would definitely take again.
Ugh! Must be better in person based on reviews, but i took him online due to COVID. Moves REALLY fast, doesn't explain well, super dry, and not helpful in answering questions .He talks to students like we should already understand chemistry and grades hard. I basically self-taught this with the textbook and YouTube. Super stressful.
Ive heard left and right stories about this professor, but it depends on you. After the first exam, if you know youre going to fail, DROP IMMEDIATELY. I dont have him as a lab prof, but as a lecturer hell try his best to present the material. Remember this is basics to Chemistry, up to you whether you are there for the knowledge or the grade.
Miles is very knowledgable with chemistry... but this was a very hard class for me. However, do to the online learning environment, I do not believe that Chem110 or 111 (at Citrus C.) prepared me for the level of difficulty his class was. Exams are tough and are heavily weighed. He's a nice guy, but expects you to know the material; I got an A.
Kicked me out of class
This is the only review you need. DO THE HOMEWORK! The homework is not mandatory, but doing it is the only way to pass the class. When you're in lecture DON'T focus on taking notes; just LISTEN and try to understand the topic. All the notes are already made for you on his lessons. If you do not do the homework, you will fail the class.
A good professor wants you to be prepared for the harder chem courses. You need to put lots of effort to pass.
Absolutely traumatizing. Tests on 1/3 of the semester at a time & gives no study guide. You walk blindly into exams. Is a tough grader. If you write an answer in the wrong format or miss something small he will mark whole answer as wrong. Dismissive when u ask for help. Graded on hw that has stuff he hasnt even covered yet. Would not recommend.
when registering for this class it was an in person class which still requires access to pearson online he makes it extremely difficult to find the registration and the directions do not match what is ask for on the website overall very confused on just trying to access the course and the materials. Over all thoughts confused and not easy to access
Put in the work and Prof Miles will see it and appreciate it. He really cares for his students if sees you actively trying. Homework is optional but DO IT. It serves as a "study guide" for his exams. His office hours are extremely helpful. Lab reports were painful, he does read and grade them thoroughly so make sure you put in effort.
Experience in his class has been anything but good. Online lectures for the hybrid classes are horribly structured and difficult to follow. Unclear of his expectations and leaves out a lot of information in the syllabus. Rather than improving the canvas resources he just complains about low quiz/test and blames it on a lack of student effort.
Professor Miles was a great professor. Overall Chem 112 is a tough class overall, but professor Miles does a great job in lab and lecture. He if a fair grader and is willing to help you out if you tell him you need help or ask questions.
Professor Miles is an amazing professor, but its a lot of content to go over. Therefore, you will need to work hard to earn a satisfying letter grade.
Test heavy & all work is from Mastering Chemistry, which gave me a headache from looking at a computer screen for hours. All homework was assigned on MC. Tests were definition based & math based- fill in/multiple choice. I didn't go to his lectures often & perhaps that would have made my grade look prettier so I suggest you attend his lectures.
I took him for 110, now taking him for 112. He is very nice, patient, and very intelligent. He's a little too smart to be teaching a low-level course so his explanations are hard to understand, but he has a very clear grading criteria, offers tons of extra credit, and is accessible in and outside of class. His first exam is hard but it gets better!
Professor Miles presents the material clearly, but CHEM110 requires serious effort. Engage with the textbook and attend classes - they're worth it. For extra study prep, try using unstuck ai alongside other resources like ChatGPT.
To be honest, Miles is a good teacher but not for an introductory class. His lectures are very commentary heavy and it's best to just annotate as you go. The one thing that really made me struggle, as well as the class, was time management. On the last week, we were two chapters behind and were expected to learn it because it was on our final exam.
Always something going on, a report, quiz, exam, problem set, etc. Lots of labs and the reports are not easy. He lectures clearly, summaries of the lectures are provided (annotate them with your own notes), and is very accessible in person. Grades quickly and fairly. Show up for all labs and lectures, do practice problems, and ask questions.
The professor was not hard overall just write your note in advance to annotate during class. Homework was a lot and had to turn some in for the test. Test were easy if you study and I did not but I passed. I only had him for lectures so the work was just homework and study for exams.
Miles grades harshly the first 6 weeks. Once you get into the flow of the class, the course is on rails and there's always one thing after another. Reports are very helpful for your final grade, so learn how he wants them the first time and repeat. Don't miss lecture, ask questions and show that you want to succeed and he will try to help you out.
He acts like you are getting an A throughout the entire semester and then boom 50 question final with strictly only 1 hour given and the majority are equations or take time to complete. The only thing good that came out of this class is that it kind of prepared me for chem 111. Literally got a B in this class and an A in chem 111…
Miles is a great professor, his chemistry knowledge is I dare to say overqualified. The only problem I wanted to mention is that it is assumed that you understand every one of the topics he teaches after only one explanation. His exams are also difficult, but you cant expect CHEM112 to be a piece of cake can you? I wish I took him for CHEM111.
This guy is one of the hardest professors I've taken. He is knowledgeable, but taking his hybrid class was brutal. Lectures were terribly formatted, O chem tutor came in clutch. A lot of us struggled and ended with a B, barely. Exams are tough if you don't go to his in person lectures. Feels like O chem, without the O. Report 20, exam 45%, final 15
