He is new teacher but a great. really cares about his students and help them do well. i was not in the class but in his speech and debate team. takes his students to the next level speech and you just want to get involved and very helpful in the work. best of luck and make sure to turn in the work on time.
Mr. Petersen is a great teacher! I took him for Comm St 1A (speech) and he was so clear on instructions and gives you opportunities for extra credit. He does Ice Breaker Question of the Day every class and it makes you feel comfortable! Highly suggest him to anybody! :) I am not in his class anymore but he still remembers me! He's a nice guy!
First Year teaching at delta, and has NO! clue what he is doing....Had a hard time understanding what he really wanted...almost impossible to get even a B in the class...without spending hours on speech prosess....wouldnt tke this class, unless it was ur only class you were taking that semester!!!!!would never recomend to anyone...
He was pretty easy, but rambled SO much. He didnt give alot of instruction and his grading system unfairly weighs some speeches heavier than others. ex) not doing the last speech of four (25% of the work), you lose 40% of the total speech grade. Hes not too bad, very wordy and awkward when trying to explain things. he's new so thats probably why.
Fun, engaging teacher. Interactive activities.
With this teacher you cannot be late or never miss a class. When it comes to grading you he expects you to speaking like your running for President. He gives out extra credit and guess what you have to attend a 1 day speech tournament for 1 point lmao that really helps haha!!
I would say that the first speech and the last were the most nerve wrecking. He is helpful before speeches and grades fair. Showing up wasn't really a priority, most people who did their speeches on the first day didn't show on the days after (to finish the speeches up).
I loved his class, he was very helpful. But he requires you to work for the A. But you can definately acheive the good grade. You just have to show up and listen, he does a lot of great practices to make you feel comfortable with public speaking. I recommend you take this in conjunction with 52, so you practice even more and get great advise.
This is my 2nd class with Mr. Peterson. If you attend, do what he says and practice for speeches you will earn a good grade. He is very helpful and answers his emails quickly. He grades fairly and makes the class interesting. You will enjoy his classes!
He helps his student a lot. Do your work and practice for the four speeches and you will do fine. study for the midterm and final. you don't take quizzes on his class or any other tests besides the midterm and final. He gives out extra credit. He makes his class fun and interesting. you will definitely enjoy his class
He picks his favorites, and those are the ones who will do good in his class. His grading on speeches is really unfair. He has strict rules that only apply to the ones who aren't his favorite students. Would not recommend him to anyone. Mid-term is really hard.
This teacher is clear, organized, challenging and fun! Take this class and be inspired.
He is a great teacher and is very inspiring.
Mr.Petersen is an ideal teacher who is helpful ,articulate, organized and clear of what he expects and wants from a student .He gives total attention in helping the student understand the subject!Friendly and makes Public speaking easy if not a piece of cake!
Mr. Peterson is a great, great instructor ! The speeches were all laid out for you, and you're told what you need to do to prepare for each of them. Tests are taken directly from the book and from what you talk about in class. One of the best instructors I've had at Delta by far !
I loathe public speaking!! Took the summer class and I'm glad I got it over with! :)Mr. Petersen is a great teacher. He gives you all the tools you need to succeed in the class, you just need to use them.
eventhough i got a B in his class i wouldn't recommend taking his class because he didn't use the textbook at all. all he wanted was to read the whole chapter without giving any study guide or hand out. he's also kind of mean to the students who didn't meet his expectation, he would nag in front of the class for a long time. i don't like him
Rude, Obnoxious, Chatter Box & Likes to Play "FAVORITE".Don't take his class
I thought I liked him in the beginning, but now I don't. I do A LOT of public speaking outside of class and wondered how I got a C in this Intro class. Seems like an advanced Speech class. 4 Speeches, 2 Exams, and participation. Don't show up late or you'll end up with 3 points out of 20 for particpatin even if u come to class everyday. Don't take.
took his class last semester and totally regretted it.
He is fair to me in grading. Although he is a RUDE. Cuts students off in class all the time while they're speaking. Talk to us as if we're little kids with no brains. Speaks of the negatives rather than emphasize of the positive of the speeches. 1/2 of class is always him bragging about his students in the competitions. I say fire him. Waste tax $$
Speech is a hard class... don't blame the class, not the teacher! He is a tough grader but if you prepare for each speech he won't have reason to criticize you. He is very clear with his advice and if you put in your fair amount of effort you will do well.
He nearly failed my entire class in Beginning Speech. DO NOT TAKE HIM
I AM IN MR. PETERSEN'S SUMMER COMM ST 1A CLASS. I WAS DREADING THIS CLASS, BUT HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN VERY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED. MR. PETERSEN IS ACTUALLY MAKING SPEECH INTERESTING AND KIND OF FUN. HE IS VERY NICE AND VERY PATIENT WITH EVEN THE BIGGEST SLACKERS IN CLASS. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING HIM. GREAT TEACHER!
Before taking this course my anxiety about public speaking was extremly high. This class was awesome... Mr. Petersen was great. He is very nice, very patient and wants nothing more than his whole class to succeed. He is a very fair grader in the sense that your grade is what you put inot the class. Your grade is earned! You will work :o)
Before taking this course my anxiety about public speaking was extremly high. This class was awesome... Mr. Petersen was great. Took his class in the spring 2010 and hated it. He's a rude sarcastic teacher who likes to play favorite. Don't take his class.
I took Mr. Petersen's class in the summer of "10. At first I so nervous in taking this class, but once I took this class I really learned a lot of things. He is really funny and so nice. For everyone taking this class I recommend that you guys should take his class you will have fun.
I was scared to death of this class before I took it but Mr. Petersen taught it great. He told us exactly what we needed to do and by following directions, which some people can't figure out, and by practicing at home you can easily get a good grade. I recommend him to everyone.
I was so scared to take a speech clas but Mr. Petersen did a very good job with explaning exactly what he wanted and he was funny. He was also sympathetic to my medical condition.Although I was absent due to a ongoing medical condition he understood and if I had a valid medical note I was fine.Grades are definetly earned not given though. Thumbs up
Thought an easy intro class, a little harder than I thought. Terry seemed really down to earth, but definatly knew his stuff. Graded a bit to harsh for a beginning class. 4 speeches and 2 exams, the exams were from lecture and out of the book. Although his lectures were more like discussions not really a lecture. I really liked the ? of the day!
Took his class in the fall 2010. Didn't like it because he would use favoritism on some of the students. If you're not 1 of his faves then don't bet on getting an A in his class. He was also quite sarcastic and rude at times. I wouldn't recommend taking his class.
Mid term and Final are super easy, 40 Q's. Study guide very helpful. No homework just 4 speechs. 20 points extra credit possible.
I was sick for about a week so I called the number on his syllabus and left THREE messages, since he never answered his phone, asking for any homework I missed or needed to bring with me. When I got to class he said "You should've e-mailed me" and then dropped me a full letter grade. The final had nothing to do with the class.
He is pretty chill. He does grade a little harsh but if you practice(like he tells you to,he tries to tattoo that into your brain)you will do good.4 speeches,a midterm, and a final. No offfical homework but you should practice for your speeches. If you keep up with the reading you should do good on the 2 test.email him if you have a question.he helps
Took him for parli debate. Online posts were a pain, exams are easy and debates were fun. He talks too much.
Out of every class that I have had to and will have to take I was the most apprehensive about taking speech. Once class started though surprisingly it turned out to be one if my favorite classes that I have ever taken. Mr. Peterson was a great teacher,I actually looked forward to attending class.
Before i began this class i was really scared about public speaking but Mr.petersen was a very clear and concise teacher. he really does want to see everybody succeed. Do NOT plan on not putting in the work though with him, you get what you give. exams were pretty easy..received a study guide prior to each one..i HIGHLY reccomend taking this class
I really learned a lot in this class. Attendance is key, the more you come the more you will be prepared. Plus, it's 20 points. This class requires time, and practice. Tests are fairly easy, and he gives a study guide. Mr. Petersen wants you to succeed, and he will prepare you, but you have to put in effort. I recommend taking his class!
I took his class over summer and fell in love with public speaking and he is one of the best teachers i've ever had.He is crystal clear with instructions on speeches and is very helpful with any questions. Just follow his instructions and you'll definitely do good on speeches. Simple, 4 speeches and 2 exams, but you need to put in time.
I took this class over the summer and i absolutly loved it! I was a little apprehensive about public speaking before hand and was very nervous but his instructions are so clear and concise and he provides a very comfortble environment. test are super easy (if you read the book). Only 4 speeches. Fair grader.. you get what you put into it.
Dr. Petersen is a great professor. He not only teaches speech, but other good life lessons like punctuality. And to pass this class, effectively use your note cards, prepare ahead of time, and you are golden. Don't be the person that skips speech day w/ a lame excuse, cause it is obvious and it is only serving you a disadvantage.
There were 6 assignments: 4 speeches and 2 tests. This professor also asks questions (music, movies...) instead of asking you to say "here" at roll call, to get you comfortable with the class. But other than that, he was irritable, sometimes overemotional, and he would express frustration with students (without good cause) in front of the class.
Such a fun class with an instructor who is very available. He gives you the grading criteria; even if your speech isn't brilliant, if you follow the guidelines and actually rehearse, you will pass. Show up, read the text, memorize your speeches, and have fun.
Tried to belittle students sometimes. He was really cool at the beginning of the semester, but he started to be very irritable at the class sometimes. Almost each class period he would talk disrespectfully to someone, not really rude, but still, he is a teacher. And it wasn't like our class was bad, we were pretty good, and he still mean sometimes.
This was the 3rd class I've taken with Petersen and it won't be the last! What makes him an AMAZING teacher is that he actually cares about his students! This class is easy if you are willing to put in the time to do your work. You do use the book but I would just use the library's copy instead of buying it. I HIGHLY recommend his class!
A great teacher, very friendly. We had a total of four speeches, one essay, an outline, one midterm, and a final. There was also discussions online, worth 30 pts total. He gave alot of extra credit, and was always helpful. He really wanted everyone to succeed.
Mr Peterson was a really nice guy. I had him last fall. I was really nervous when it came to talking in front of a class but as the semester progressed I was one of the top students. I learned a lot. He is willing to help after classes on anything you may need. There is only two tests and 4 speeches. I really enjoyed it.
He's a pretty down-to-earth teacher. He makes the class fun and enjoyable. I just had him for Intercultural Communications and it was one of the classes that I looked forward to.
Petersen is a great teacher. He communicates very well and is fun to be around. The class wasn't very challenging, but he graded attendance, which isn't too bad if you're not driving from Stockton to Mtn. House, like me. Anyway, class discussions were lively, I felt he never belittled anyone. Any of his teasing was in good spirit.
Mr. Peterson is an AWESOME teacher. I def, recommend his class I drove from Stockton to mtn house everyday and it was totally worth. He is a funny guy he will throw in his jokes at times and it kinda funny cause sometimes no one laughs. HAHA he has a great personality keeps the classroom alive and going. I seriously never had such a great prof.
This class is as fun as you make it. Performing in front of others can be scary, but you get to share a message that is important to you, through literature of your choice. The prof is funny & available, but he has little tolerance for laziness and he'll call you on it. The 2 exams come from the book, which you have to read outside of class.
He doesn't teach anything. He gets into conversations most of class or goes over the same grading criteria over and over. You have to go home and memorize a 4 minute block of words and then perform it as a character. You teach yourself from the book. He makes you figure it out on your own but at the same time he treats students like children.
Had him for com 2. Great with helping you prepare for your performance. Makes you feel very comfortable when performing. Makes it very passable. Helps after class and gives tips on how you can make it better.
Harsh grader. I joined the class to develop skills in speaking in front of a public audience and I do not feel that he helps you accomplish that. I do not recommend him.
Public speaking is the only class that I have ever had to re-take and have difficulty with, due to anxiety. Professor Petersen understands students fear of public speaking and helps them through it.Yes, you do have to read your textbook and practice delivering your speeches, but this is college...Positive experience; great professor.
The class helped me with the fear of public speaking. You have 4 speeches, and you have a few tests based on lectures and the book. Other than that its really easy.
He is very helpful, he goes out of his way to make sure every single student knows what to do. he gives plenty of extra credit and extention dates for his assignments. Hes really understanding. just dont come late or miss class because you lose points. exciting class. and he kinda looks like he could be a james bond character lol
This was my first communication class and I'm glad I took it with Petersen. He THOROUGHLY went through the guidelines for what he expected with speeches. And CONSTANTLY said what you get out of the class is the time you put in.Wasn't a hard class but he states EVERY thing that needs to be seen during the speech.
Need to attend every class for participation points, and they do add up considering there are so little assignments throughout the whole class. 4 speeches and 2 quizzes. Missing points on your speeches drastically affects your grade. Still scared taking in front of the class, did not help much. MUST SPEND ALL TIME YOU HAVE ON THIS CLASS.
Tells you how to do the speeches very well, gives help when needed, gives major league extra credit. only 4 assignments, midterm & final, but those 4 assignments are laborious. MT final are beyond simple.
Terry Petersen is a fabulous teacher. He is tougher than any other CC professor Ive had, his courses are definitely for the serious student. If you are looking to "slide through" a class, HE IS NOT THE INSTRUCTOR FOR YOU. You will work for your grade, however he is willing to help in any way possible. Attend all classes as you will receive credit.
Mr. Petersen is an awesome teacher. He cares about he's students and them succeeding which a lot of teachers don't do now and days. I drove all the way to Mountain House from Stockton just to his class never ever felt not going to class. He's funny and encourages he's students to join the debate team. He knows what he is talking about.
This was my first time taking a Public Speaking class, and he made it very comfortable! He will go out of his way to help you as well as motivate and push you because he knows you can do it. Focuses on the quality of your speeches over the quantity. Every teacher should aspire to be like him! He is by far my favorite teacher :)
I just dropped my com studies class with Petersen. He is very confusing and doesn't do a good job of explaining what he expects in a speech. The first speech with him was a ridiculous oral interp speech, basically if you didn't go up there and be an academy award winning actor/actress, your grade will suffer. Don't take it you're not super outgoing
He's a great teacher. He really cares about his students and will go out of his way to help you when you ask for it. If you don't read the text book you'll fail. He has a sarcastic sense of humor but never tries to embarrass or ridicule, he tries to make the class fun. Overall he's a great teacher and I highly recommend him.
Professor Pettersen is very passionate with what he teaches, he only wants the very best for his students. I enjoyed the class and he is very specific with his expectations. In the syllabus he tells you what speeches you will have and tests. You are graded with participation by your attendance in class, which means you need to be in class.
Mr. Petersen was one of the best teachers I HAVE EVER HAD. He DOES NOT make the students feel disrespected in any way, and makes hard attempts to connect with the students. He deserves the respect and attention ANY TEACHER should receive. He expects you to put effort, which is what you should do anyway. Put time into the class and you will do fine.
Great teacher if you want to learn. Good extra credit opportunities. Lectures are important. Great sense of humor. Dedicated instructor. If you are lost just follow what he says, it will guarantee your success. Reading the book is very important. Replies emails promptly. Can provide extra time outside of class if needed. Class participation helps.
He talks a lot in class about the same vocabulary for each speech and a lot about himself. He is not always clear about the instructions and makes it uncomfortable to ask questions. I would not take this professor again.
Mr Petersen is amazing! Ive taken the 1A, 02 and 05 with him. He is passionate anout his job and it shows! Great class lectures, he also has great videos that helps. He replies to Emails promptly and provide numerous extra credit opportunities! He gives great geed back and want all of his students to succeed. He is an amazing professor overall
Petersen is an AMAZING teacher. I drove all the way from Stockton just to take him again. Was nervous about giving speeches. But, he knows what he's talking about and gives you SO many examples on what the speeches are suppose to look like. Drove all the way from Stockton just to take him again. Helped me with a Prose speech for the debate team
Mr. Petersen is a really great teacher and is making Public Speaking SOO much easier than I thought it would be, but at the same time challenges you to go above and beyond. Highly recommend you take him especially if you are a nervous public speaker.
Prof. Petersen is one of the greatest teachers I've had, if not the best teacher I've had. He goes over everything he's looking for in the speeches, and clearly explains the grading. You're given plenty of time to work on your speeches. I went into this class dreading that I had to take it, and walked out being comfortable with public speaking.
Petersen has a very clear criteria for his assignments. Other than that he is condescending, he complains about time for speeches when he is the one who takes up most of the time, and you get the impression he doesn't hear a voice louder than his own. You don't learn a thing from this particular class but the people you meet are fun.
Great teacher, great class. Get ready for his sense of humor. Fun filled class. Lots of activities. Utilize his extra credits for boost your grades up. Uses books. Attendance matters as he goes through all his assignments and grading system thoroughly during his lectures. This is my second time taking him. Definitely recommend him.
Professor Petersen has been one of my favorite professors while being at delta. He gives you great feedback and pushes you to be the best you can be. He has stayed hours after class to help his students with practice on speeches for the tournament, which shows he really cares. I definitely recommend taking this teacher!
He has a great personality and helps you with the speeches and how to approach. If you have stage freight, do not take this course.
Professor Petersen is one of the best professors at Delta College. He takes the pressure off of speaking in public. This class requires for you to attend class, take notes and do your work. Professor Petersen has an open door policy and is very helpful. He is clear on what he wants but you can email him and/or go to his office to get clarification.
If you are NOT trying to win a speech tournament- do yourself a favor- take someone else. The fact the MH wins the tournaments every year has gone to his head. If your speech topic is not something he agrees with politically he will tear you apart. He wants you to be great- only so you can make him look better. If you're not on board, you will lose
If you work, he's not shy about telling you that YOU make MH campus look bad. There should be a lab for his class- You will lose HOURS preparing for speeches, and it will never be good enough! There aren't enough credits to justify amount of time you will lose to meeting his demands. Hard to have respect for the disrespectful. Beginning class HA!
your grade is based off of your 4 speeches and a final/midterm. As long as you practice your speeches daily for 30 mins before giving it in class (preferable a week before if you got the time), you should be good with an easy A/B. Only complaint is that the impromptu speech is weird, gotta be lucky with the topic you get. Take his class!
Mr. Petersen is an honest professor. If you show up and do everything you are supposed as a student (including the activities/readings) you should be fine. There are only 4 speeches, 2 exams with plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Those crying about him being rude/hard are the same ones who passively show up to class and don't do anything.
Professor Peterson is beyond one of the worst professors of all time. He expects us to be perfect when making our speeches in front of our classmates, and if you participate in the event he wants perfection. He always talks way way too much and doesnt even stick to what we talk about in class. If your not a pro in speech dont take him.
He's alright, but he treats a beginners speech class like everyone is going to become a professional speaker. All he really cares about is if you're doing to Speech tournament. He gives you 10 points extra credit, while most teachers give you a whole letter grade for going to it. If you don't go he gives you the cold shoulder and makes you feel bad
I really liked taking this class with him, but he is tough. His class was only 200 points and attendance was worth points. He explained what he expected for every speech . He offered up to 20 points of extra credit so even though I pretty much failed the first two speeches, I was able to make up my points and get a good grade in the end.
Professor Petersen has been one of my favorite teachers at Delta college! I have taken 3 of his classes and loved every single one. He cares so much and is extremely helpful. He goes into depth and really explains everything. As long as you do things how he says too, which isnt hard, you can get an A.
I would say that my time with Mr. Petersen was most enjoyable, as he taught me better public speaking methods as well as giving a lot of thought to acting. Tests are straightforward, participation is key as he talks about many ways to improve yourself and your speaking capabilities! Great teacher, overall! Can't wait to take him again!
He was a very tough grader especially when it comes to speeches. He doesn't care if you're not ready, shy, or confused about his assignments, you will be graded poorly. He would outtalk you when picking topics and have all these restriction to how he would want the speech prepared. My class went from 30 to less than 10 students.
I have taken public speaking and debating class with him. He is a terrific professor. Very inspiring and funny. He has clear grading criteria and explains in advance what he is expecting for each speech. He is very prompt in replying the emails and explaining all the queries. No wonder his students always wins in the competitions.
Mr. Peterson is a really great professor. His class isn't super demanding or difficult; If you show up to class and do your discussion post you'll be fine. He explains everything and easily answers questions. He grades on a point system and there is enough extra credit to basically make up for a whole letter grade. I would 100% recommend.
Mr Petersen not only teaches a class, he provided us with great skills. At first I thought Public Speech is only a requirement but Public Speech as Mr Petersen taught us is learning how to communicate verbally in an efficient manner, how to communicate with our body language, also how important it is the way we present ourselves .
Taking this beginner speech class I was terrified as Im sure everyone is that is going to take this class. This was by far the worst teacher you could take . He acts like were all professionals and his grading is ridiculous. He makes you feel dumb in front of the class. DONT take his class. Have to retake it because of 4 points away from a C.
Mr. Peterson is a great teacher. very passionate about what he does. I found this was a really hard class, but I'm surprised by how much I learned. You can use the skills learned in real life.
Mr. Petersen truly cares about his students. He is accessible before and after class. There are 4 speeches in total. Although his lectures are clear and easy to follow I took notes. Can use 3x5 notecard on tests and most speeches. Provides xtra credit if you compete at a speech tournament (I recommend). Great course to improve communication skills.
He's a very disrespectful and degrading person. He gets the joy in making others feel small. He loves to interrupt people doing the speech and give them live critics on how horrible it is. One of the worst professors at Delta, would not recommend.
Mr. Petersen is one of the rare professors that truly cares for his students. The class itself is not difficult but he will not give you a grade you do not deserve, you must work for it and earn it. Always making sure his instructions are clear. Always open to helping you succeed and available to answer any questions you have. Great professor!!!
Mr. Petersen was a great professor. I've had him as a professor for two classes that were 3 years apart. He's been a speech prof. for many years and has a knack for getting people to open up. He has excellent communication skills and loves his job. If you participate in his exercises and take the time to work on your speeches you will do well.
He is a caring teacher because explains exactly what is needed to pass his class very clear. Always willing to help outside class and gives positive feedback. Is funny and always gives examples/resources to help students who are visual learners like me better understand material. Gives extra credit/quiz are multiply choice.
Professor Petersen is the most disrespectful professors on the campus. Although if you want to go to class and feel uplifted this is not the class for you. He will bash your performance in front of the class. He requires students to buy his instructional packet and it includes guidelines but it is conditional and he only informs you later.
He is clear about what he wants you to do for his speeches, it's in the guidelines he provides. He gives you constructive criticism about how to improve for the next one. Everything you're tested on and graded on is things from the book. If you have additional questions just email him or ask after class, he's pretty good at getting back to you.
Stressed about mandatory speech class? This is your professor! He gives as much extra credit as he does speeches. He wants you to improve but you can screw up every speech and still do well. It is all about the effort put forth. He will try to push you to success but if you fall get right back up. EFFORT! You might be surprised how much you learn
As long as you turn in what is asked for you will pass. Peterson makes doing presentations as easy as it can be. He only asks for effort on the student's behalf. Few assignments, and multiple extra credit opportunities available throughout the semester. Great teacher online.
Very tough with grading. You aren't graded on much, but every assignment counts. Make sure to read rubrics. Very late grading also. He fogs a lot of important info with repeated/unimportant info in the modules so I stopped looking at them. You're bound to be anxious in this class so suck it up and do your best or you're gonna fail if you barely try
He grades lower than you think he would. There are very few assignments, but he takes weeks to get the work graded. Also, his online course is a pool of Modules, of which are links to Youtube videos created by other instructors.
You will have an "A" all semester and at the end, you will have a "F". He waits until the end of the semester to grade so you can't figure out where you went wrong. He lacks communication when I reached out to him multiple times and he said that I didnt. When he realized he was at fault he blamed his TA and told me its too late.
Though grader! No extra credit
This is by far one of my favorite teachers. Extremely helpful and responds back really fast even outside of school hours. Very reliable, will help you through every step if needed. Very lenient, great attitude. Barely any work. Textbook yes but not bad.
His grading is harder than I expected. He grades last minute. I followed his instructions for assignments but he still says I did not. It wouldn't even be half credit. If you missed one thing from his assignment, it is an automatic zero.
Ngl, he just hurt my feelings with his grading. He gives you a good 3 weeks to prepare for a speech. Not bad. My feelings were just hurt.
Really unorganized Canvas page, and very minimal requirements and expectations for assignments. Most of the work in the class consists of youtube lectures from outside entities, nothing from the professor himself. Gives multiple weeks to prepare for speeches and gives late credit.
This professor is very harsh when it comes to grading. Anything can result to a zero. You can go from A to an F very quickly. His "lectures" aren't his either. Its just YouTube videos and a book you have to purchase. Very unorganized too.
