great class ,informative,he only explains things once so listen up .wear an iron maiden shirt for extra credit.
Very clear about what he expects and super helpful. Very fair in his marking. Overall just a really cool guy.
Some days, his lectures are interesting and he is very knowledgeable/effective when interpreting texts. Other days, he goes on long tangents and talks about conspiracy theories...His marking comments are vague. You have to make an appointment w/ him outside of class time to get a clear explanation. I think I just prefer a different teaching style.
Very smart, very passionate, very long hair. Terry loves english and it shows. Nice to have a prof who cares so much about what he is teaching. Only downside is he is a bit rough on marking. Definitely expects a lot from students. If you get 80% in most english courses expect to get no higher than 70% in his.
His lecture is very interesting, and fun. however he doesn't help much in developing student's writing skills. He's really a tough scorer.
His lecture is fun, however he is a tough scorer and does not help student develop their writing skill. Overall not really a good teacher.
Best prof. Teaches you how to write essays and think about the readings. Fair marker and very friendly. Take his class!
Horrible teacher, will make your GPA very low.
HE IS HORRIBLE! interesting class but will make your GPA very veryyyy low
People who say Terry is "horrible" are only saying that because they got a low grade or they don't understand literature. If they got a low grade it's because they didn't take notes or put effort into the assignments. He's VERY helpful with understanding of the texts & with writing skills but you have to show you care by putting in time and effort.
Terry has an interesting and engaging teaching style. He engages the class in an open discussion leading the class but remaining open to the opinions and questions of his students. His marking is fair so long as you engage the material adequately and put some effort into your writing. I would recommend both Terry and Eng 211 to any student.
It's hard to pass his course compare to the other english teacher. His class is fun but he's a very tough scorer.
Terry has a unique taste in literature and some interesting choices for novels and novellas, if you are into his style of literature you will definitely have fun in any of his courses. His lecture style is sometimes a bit erratic but he nonetheless accomplishes a cordial learning environment that supplements your readings with some quirky insights.
Taking Terry's class will make your GPA drop. He is a tough prof and has high expectations. If you are in class to learn however, his class is the right place to be. I learned a lot in his course and he delivered it in an easy to understand manner and was always available for extra help.Worth every hour and penny I spent.
His class was so tough. He is a good teacher if you want to learn. But your GPA will be very low!!
The worst professor I have taken EVER! He takes off your marks for very few things like comma and period errors!!!
Terry is a hilarious professor, very excitable, always interesting, and non-judgmental. He gets excited to help people, and has great energy. He has high standards for students' work, but it's because he wants to make everyone better and to impart the knowledge necessary for success. Great dude, fun class.
Very knowledgeable about all novels and short stories!Super helpful with writing and research tips, would definitely recomend him
I took three second year classes with Terry. Loved him! He is deeply involved in all of the material he teaches and can motivate everyone to get into it as well. Like others, I did get relatively low marks in his classes. However, he is one of the few profs who actually try to prepare you for university after Okanagan College. Amazing professor!
I seriously don't recommend him. He is kind of funny in class, but I learnt little. He knows his information very well but it is not clear at all what he exactly wants to say or what he wants the students to write about. Just very regret I took his course.
One of the best profs I've ever had. I disagree that he's a hard marker, I listened in his class, and put in moderate effort and did really well. You will learn so much from him, he teaches you how to write an amazing paper. Whether you get a low mark or not, you will learn a valuable lesson in writing a post-secondary research paper.
Terry is very passionate about literature, he is entertaining and also very approachable. His classes are more fun and you learn a lot about composition. HOWEVER, I took 231 and I regret it because it was a horror/gothic/vampire themed which is his passion, great for him and others but very frustrating because I completely lacked interest in it.
Terry is the best prof I've had to date. He is very passionate, knowledgeable, entertaining, and approachable. I felt his marking was just challenging enough to make me try hard, and I still got good marks with him. It helps if you are interested in English, but he is just a great guy overall. Super helpful and constructive feedback on essays too!
Fun and creative teacher! I loved his classes, and he is a very pro-student. He enjoys discussing the text to insane degrees, and will stop at nothing to help you along.
Terry is fantastic. He is very passionate about what he teaches and it is great to see. He is very clear about his expectations and as long as you pay attention when he speaks passing the course is ridiculously easy. However he is a stickler for attendance and deadlines. I highly recommend him!
This dude is by far one of the best English profs I've met. His passion for what he teaches is so inspiring and really gets his students invested in the material. Anyone who actually has a passion for the subject (or even a slight interest) will do fantastically. Notice the reviews complaining about hard marking are the ones who misuse grammar.
Great prof! I left each lecture thinking I was passionate about Gothic literature because of how passionate he is... then would realize when I got home that he tricked me into thinking I cared about it. You will learn loads about traditional grammar and writing. His lectures go by quickly and painlessly because he's super fun to listen to.
Great prof! Had him for ENGL 100, my first college course that involved writing as I'm a science student and he was awesome. He gets a feel for the class before he begins to teach to see what level everyone is at and offers extra help whenever needed. He's really passionate and energetic which keeps you paying attention. easy A!
Terry was great- if you want to learn how to write, definitely take his class. The class is all about writing papers- but you determine the topic most of the time. I imagine you don't need to purchase the textbook and could probably find the essays you're supposed to read online.
Terry made English a really enjoyable class. If you are looking to further your academic writing abilities, I would strongly recommend taking his class. Terry is a very interesting professor and is very open to talking about anything from current events, travelling and even food and beer. If you're reading this Terry, I really appreciate you!
Terry is an excellent prof for someone who cares about English. I had a hard time in his class because of the lack of creativity that he gave us. A lot of papers to write all relating to historical people and very deep thought out topics. Very hard grader. He teaches you what you need to know but I had a hard time doing well in the class.
Terry was a super fun prof! 5 years later I still remember and apply the things he has taught me in my writing. This class will help you throughout your entire college career.
Terry makes lectures very interesting because he is very passionate on the topics, and when you leave you think YOU'RE passionate about it! Though he marks difficult, the more classes you show up to, the better chance you'll be more knowledgable when writing papers/midterm... this class cannot be passed if you do not attend the classes.
I took Terrys class last semester, and he was great! Although he can be a tough marker its genuinely in the interest of truly educating his students. He is incredibly passionate and you will actually learn quite a bit from him. Hes pretty funny as well. 10/10 :)
I've been a student of OC for several years and I can confidently say that Terry is one of the BEST profs here. Not only is he passionate about English literature, he is chalk-full of stories from his own experience that add to the historical connections he makes to the texts. Very entertaining and very kind and patient. He is a tough/fair grader.
Terry prides himself on being a tough grader & makes sure you know it (it's not possible to get above 90% on anything). His grading criteria is vague (good luck finding the rubric he uses). Get ready to have random words crossed out in your writing bc Terry thinks another word sounds better! Also get ready for TMI stories about his personal life!
One of the best English profs I've had/seen in a long time. Takes the time to explain, make materials accessible for everyone no matter what makes it relatable. It is worth the work because what you get out of it at the end is 100% worth it.
English was made bearable thanks to Terry. He has a clear passion for English and that is evident in lectures and assignments. He challenges you to think outside the box and to strive to the best writer that you can be. It is great that he also does not prescribe a textbook to save students money.
Terry's class was the most useful class I've ever taken. I recommend to any serious student. He writes lots of comments on papers and helps when you have questions. Great overall if you want to learn.
Terry's class was very useful because I did so poor on all the assignments that I paid extra attention to format and sentence structure in my other courses. Toughest grader ever and thinks he is the only one who knows about plagiarism and spends two weeks talking about it.
Terry knows his stuff. His passion for literature is very evident and he does a great job of passing that drive onto his students. His expectations are fair and clear - this is not an easy class but if you show up, try your best, pay attention, and read the material you will do just fine.
Fantastic and well-respected prof. I learnt a lot! If you're looking for an A, this might not be the prof for you. Terry doesn't believe in giving A's. In order to get an A, you better write at a graduate level. Due dates are concrete! Don't be late or you lose marks for every day it is late! Great experience. No regrets, even after a C grade.
Best English Professor around, easily! I've had 3 classes with Terry and I wish I could take more because he's so good as a professor. I've learned more in his classes than anywhere else. He is funny, smart, easily accessible after class, loves what he does, has a big heart and truly cares, and marks fair but difficult (which helps you learn). 6/5.
He is such a tough marker, and I have spent lots time in learning center for improving, however, I just got C level on my both paper and I was so frustrated. His course is difficult for international students, I can tell that, lots readings and writings, and low mark received. He prefers his novel writing instead of teaching.
Terry is one in a million. His assignments are difficult but his lectures are worth it. He's so passionate listening to his lectures is like watch a documentary. His stories and ideas are captivating. I loved his class so much I almost swapped out of sciences into the humanities. He was suggested to me and I would suggest him to others.
I am an English major and I have taken lots of Second-year English courses with other professors. I enjoyed all of them, except the one that I took with Terry. I found him intimidating, and I was always afraid to voice my opinion in the class. Although I got a reasonable grade, I would not recommend him to anyone.
Terry is by far the best prof I have ever had. Amazing lectures that help make so much sense of the texts you read. With that being said, he's also the hardest marker I've ever had. You have to rigorously engage with the text and use concise, academic language to expect anything close to an A. It's not impossible to get A+ though, if you work hard
Terry is fantastic! Very knowledgeable and excellent at communicating expectations for assignments. No easy grades. Students must attend class and pay close attention to succeed. Would definitely take his class again.
Terry is absolutely amazing!! His lectures are soo interesting, engaging, and helpful. He is a very good marker and teaches you to focus on grammar and concise writing. Best prof at OC by far! Highly reccomend.
Over the two English survey courses I took with Terry he single-handedly inspired me to be an English professor one day. The man's passion for what he teaches rubs off on you. You have to really pay attention and be engaged with his lectures, although that isn't hard to do- I found the 3 hour classes went by like a breeze. Best prof I've ever had
Hopping on the bandwagon at this point, but here's my two cents. Terry Scarborough loves to teach--it is that simple. This passion does not make him perfect, and it does not mean he is bound to be everybody's favorite, but what it does mean is if you take his class you will feel valued as a learner. That means a lot to me, as it should to most all.
I took Terry's class almost over a year ago now. I still look back at it as one of my favourite classes I have ever taken. I'm a Computer Science major but Terry almost convinced me to swap into English because I enjoyed his class so much. I would not say his class is easy, but I would say it's particularly hard either. It's fair and enjoyable.
Amazing professor. Would definitely recommend taking any of his classes. Terry is very passionate about what he teaches, creating an interesting learning environment. Provides a lot of feedback and carefully and thoroughly evaluates you.
I have never done well in an English class so I was very nervous for this one. Terry made his expectations very clear and thoroughly explained everything expected in each paper. He cares about his students success and is very accessible outside of class. His lectures are sometimes hard to follow because of his stories and rants.
I thought I was a decent writer until I took this class. Be ready to feel challenged and meet the expectations of Terry. It is a very difficult class, make sure to reach out if needed as he is very good with replying. Don't be fooled he is extremely nice and pleasant to be with in class, warmhearted and I recommend if you're up for the challenge!!
Terry is a brilliant professor and an amazing person. He was able to make allegories and essay structure sound interesting. His class discussions were productive and was able to involve the entire class. Terry has made me a better writer and has properly prepared us for future English courses. I recommend his classes to every single person who asks
A love/hate professor, unfortunately it was the latter for me. His lectures heavily centered on himself and the amount of reading required if you're a slow reader and have a full schedule was impossible. I found him very unapproachable and uninterested in anyone's opinion other than his own.
He isn't the best nor is the worst. Good person.
Terry is easily the best prof I have ever had. His lectures are simply amazing. He is passionate about English which makes classes enjoyable to attend. His exams are very hard but it is definitely worth it to take a class with him.
most of the time it was tricky keeping up with his lectures, he frequently switches one topic to another quickly very in depth and specific instructions he requires you to fulfill so he wont be easily satisfied with assignments that may not meet those check points, so yes, he is strict grader and overall carries high expectations
Trash prof all around. -Treats class like a therapy session -Contradicting info on course outline -got an 75-88% on all papers but one 62%(with the lowest yield) tanked my mark to a 68% first day of class he was 10 mins late and showed up with sweat stains connecting across his chest An embarrassment to the college, avoid if you can
The most disorganised prof I've ever had. His "lecture" slides made absolutely so sense, you couldn't even take notes as he was all over the place talking about personal stories. He would go over the assignments in class for about 2 mins then move on. He doesn't even have good explanations for the assignments in the course outline.
He is clear and willing to help. Nice dude.
Always talk with his favourite students rarely talk to international students
Tough grader , always want to fail the students
I drop this course didn't get anything to learn
He is not good professor, I don't want his class again in my life because he is discriminate professor.
Classic case of an English teacher who just wants to talk about their favorite books and texts. Despite being aware that a majority of the class is coming straight out of high school not knowing proper MLA, he only touches on essay writing very briefly, so briefly that it isn't even helpful in refreshing those who already know MLA.
if you are an international student, then you should not take him. Almost half of the class, dropped the course. At somehow i was able to pass the course, but he is a tough grader and is not ready to give you grades. He makes the 100 level course so difficult for students. I had done eng 150 before this, that was way easy for me as of prof.
If you're an international student without strong english writing skills, don't take him.
oh lord how much I studied for this class. I got A just because I spent more time.
Terry absolutely rubbed me the wrong way, his jokes were crude and insensitive, he spoke in asides, and was wholly uninterested in answering my questions. I had an A in the course previously but only retook it because I had health troubles that prevented me from finishing the end of it and the exam. I'm shocked that he is still teaching.
Terry was one of my favorite profs at OC and overall one of my favorite profs in my post secondary experience. Would highly recommend his classes, very personable prof, willing to take the time to help you if you ask for it.
IF YOU ARE AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AND KNOW NOTHING ABOUT MLA DON'T TAKE HIS COURSE… I REPEAT DON'T. HE WILL DEFINITELY FAIL YOU.
Great Prof, probably my favourite after my 1 year at OC. Lectures are very easy to follow and also useful. Course was not too tough with marking. 2 mandatory books, one can be easily found online and the other is $6. His course is kind of hard to figure out if you dont pull up to class but his lectures make it worth it, and hes very approachable.
As someone who struggles in English writing and is majoring in physics, he was the only English teacher I've ever had that made me enjoy English lectures. Lectures were straightforward and to the point. for ENGL-153 he hinted at what things to focus in on which made things much easier.Write down or remember what he says about the novels.
most of the time his class is a waste of time, terry shares some outrageously innappropriate stories during his class ex: friends suicide and finding a dead body. He was quite ill last semester and desperately needs to take a break, he would share to students that he was hallucinating and ill but wont see a doctor. tough grader and syllabus is bad
Professor Terry is exceptional. He has a passion for what he teaches, and he is a genuine person. He is more than willing to sit down and give you feedback on your essays. I thoroughly enjoyed his class, and I continue reading the authors we read. If you read the books and take notes in class—you will do well.
Really bad experience with this unprofessional professor, he is racist professor and always fail the international student because he is from UK.
I will recommend to international students please do not take his class he is the worst professor in Okanagan College. He always fails the Internatinal students.
I am international student myself and I can say that he is not racist or anything, he just does not understand why there are people who cannot understand him in his class. At least that's my take. That says, don't take him, internationals.
He is the racist professor at Okanagan college for International students. I will recommend to new coming student please do not take his class.
Never stops talking about things that are not related to the class at all
