He's cool...tells corny jokes...but hes still cool
Awsome intro course teacher...jokes a lot and easy tests.
Jokes a lot...easy-going....good teacher
Take notes, and you'll be fine. Keeps class interesting.
His lab was easy. Lectures always very disorganized and boring.
The Shankator
Good teacher. Makes class fun. Easy as long as you take notes.
VERY NICE AND FUNNY!!! BUT BORING AT 8AM. TAKE HIM!!!!!
I had him for both classes. I wrote a small novel during class while taking notes. He was great teacher and made class intresting. Shank was fun to listen to, but make sure to study for his tests. His tests come straight from notes.

BORING AND CONFUSING
ditto on the corny jokes ! But he is cool. Take him !
He is hilarious. Just take good notes and study them and you'll do fine on his tests, even though they aren't easy.
should take 104 before 105, you won't be lost if you do
Funny, Interesting, and easy to get along with
He's funny and makes the class go by. BTW exons have nothing to do w/ the gas station... It's an easy enough class if you take notes and study them. I passed anyways.
I had him for an 8am class my freshman year, and he made it seem not so horrible to be up at that hour. :-) Very helpful, he won't move on unless you understand something, tests are straightforward and according to the notes. Nice man, corny jokes tho.
He is a great teacher. He makes everything so easy and interesting. He is a hoot to listen to and is willing to do whatever possible to help you out.Definitely take this class.

He needs to find another job where it does not involve teaching whatsoever. His lectures have nothing to do with what is on the test. When over half the class(which is about 30-45 students) fail an OPEN NOTE test...then I think there is a problem.
He is one of the best teachers I've ever had at Marshall University!!
Terry is awesome. He will help you with anything you need and you can always stop by his office for a good joke. And the class is super easy, I made a 98%, as well as being informative.
Easy, easy, easy. He keeps the material basic, but he doens't bore you to death, he throughs in a few off comments and tries to keep your attention.
I liked Terry.. he was fun and made Biology easy (sort of) just as long as you go to class and take notes.. U got it made. He was very informative and helpful. DEFFINATELY TAKE HIM!!!
Easy if you go to class and take notes (and study them a lot)... he tells corny jokes, but it's ok.. he made my 8am class laugh, which is a tough feat. Take him.
I have had Shankinator twice.I had him for Bio 104and105 and he is the best teacher ever. The class is boring, but if you really pay attention and set near the front then, the lectures can actually be interesting. He is so easy and I would def. suggest him
He thinks he is funny
He is a great professor. I would take him again.
Although I hate science, he made my required, pointless class a little bit fun. He's a good, funny man.
I got a B in the class, but only because I barely tried at all. He likes to crack lame jokes, but his a really nice guy. Took 3 or 4 exams and had a easy paper to do, not a difficult class at all.
Makes science interesting. He's funny and keeps it from getting too boring. The tests aren't bad. There are lots of small quizes and one short paper. His lectures are good and can be funny. :)
Shank bounces around from topic to topic. His jokes are dumb and annoying. Don't take him if you are serious about your education.
Do NOT take him if you value your education!
HE is very simple. I was in a class of Non-Bio Majors, so he made it simple and fun. I would take him again if I could! I give him an A+
I had never had biology in my life and was totally scared to take it but he made it easy to understand and fun. He understood we were non-bio majors and didnt make us learn the hard stuff we didnt need. He's a great teacher!
when I put not hot, I meant it! he does not take the class seriously. 2 tests were open notes, but oh wait! half the junk on the tests were not in our notes, and yes, I take extreamly deatailed notes.
This teacher is the wrost..did not learn a thing in his class..only thing good about his class was I did not have to buy an expensive book.
He bounces around a lot, but ask him to clarify if you get lost. He is very helpful in that aspect. He tries to condense info down, especially for the non-majors. Study for tests, do your work, and you'll be fine.
I took shank and I really liked him. I can understand that people might not like him b/c they don't TRY to learn. I came out of his class with a 98% no joke. Oh yeah, please don't send him any ****, he shares the same email with his wiffy(joke he tells).
I really like Shank, he is a nice guy and always in a good mood. I think he is a great teacher and I would take another one of his classes. He answers any questions you have about his lecture.
LOVED this class, he is a great professor. Wish he taught other classes I need. Didn't like lab though, Godby didn't go over lab questions which made the quizzes very hard. Oh, beware of open book test (VERY HARD). If you take good notes, you'll do fine.

Those of you who think Shank is so bad, have you considered that maybe, just MAYBE, the material is difficult and boring? I think he does a good job with what he has to work with. He's nice and he answers any questions you have.
I really like the class and professor and would recommend him to everyone.I had him before in ISC and loved that class so I took this one.I will admit that there is a lot of information, but he try's not to go to much into too much detail.
I am not good in Science but I ended up making an A in his class. He curves the class at the end.
AWESOME TEACHER. I hate science, but I really enjoyed his class. He makes things interesting.
Great teacher, loads of fun, few funny jokes up his sleeve, tests can be hard but a little study and you will pass. great guy
Watch Dante's Peak, memorize it!! It will do ya wanders, especailly in this class!
Freshmen bring in Dante's Peak. He will give you extra Credit. He loves that movie. You should get an A easily. Especially if you bring it up in class. Good Luck
Very awesome man.. makes biology fun, he rocks, Shank For president!
kind of follows the book..but says you don't need it. (it is somewhat helpful though) he's all over the place with his notes! sometimes hard to follow. even if you think you're doing bad..he says you'll pass.
He a great proffesor. Biology is tough but he makes a whole lot easier.
Nice guy, really easy class, just show up and stay awake for most of the time and you will pass.
Great teacher! His teach are a 100 questions, but not really that bad. Take him if you get a chance to.
Can spend an entire class reading off random statistics without explaining their impact. Labs are pointless (a freaking scavenger hunt?) and you never get them back. He hates Bush though, so I give him some credit there. Class just didn't seem very ordered and I learned little. Easy though.
Take it from me, a Shank scholar, his classes are cake. Just take good notes, and you should be fine. He talks fast, but I'm a SLOW writer and I haven't had many problems keeping up. As a staunch conservative, I must also say that he's a tree hugger, but he's still a cool guy.
This teacher is awesome! He has 3 tests, 2 papers and a presentation. He is a little fast when in a lecture but he is hilarious and very nice. I would recomend this teacher to anyone!
His notes are very scattered, but he gives a lot of quizzes which help your grade in the end. He is very nice and I would recommend him for anyone who hates science, b/c he makes it a little easier.
Very easy class; come to class, take good notes, and you'll do fine on all the tests. I took this as an honors option and it was the easiest honors credit i ever got. Awesome guy, fair teacher. Take him if you get a chance! PS - Being Liberal is a plus!
As long as you take notes and come to class, you should do fine on all the tests. (Heck, he let us use our notes on every test but the final.) Labs are a joke -- there's even a 'scavenger hunt' lab. Should be fine for any non-science major. :)
he rocks my world
"Living on Earth" with Terry Shank was the easiest class I've ever had! Every test, including the final, was open notes. We had to write a 3-page paper and do a group Powerpoint presentation/3-page paper. Take this class!!!!
Awesome guy!! He makes the class as interesting as it can be! Study notes, don't buy the study guide, I never opened it! GREAT Teacher, I cannot express that enough! Take him if you get the chance, his classes fill up fast.
This guy is fantastic. It makes it so easy to pay attention to Biology, even though I'm not really a science person. I'd highly recommend him.
He's hilarious and nice and pretty easy. He's also a liberal which is awesome great teacher take him if u can
He's a nice guy and tries to make the class interesting. The tests aren't too hard if you come to class. He has a good sense of humor and isn't serious about anything. I would definately reccomend him.
It was an okay class. It was nothing special or thrilling. The tests were not easy and not too hard. Everything about this class was just okay.
great personality, a pleasure to be around
He is a very good teacher. He is super easy and you have multiple chances for extra credit. as long as you take notes and go to class you should have NO PROBLEM
He is a very nice man, but not to great of a professor. His quizzes (every Friday) are fairly easy, but its hard to follow him while trying to take notes (he's all over the place). His tests are difficult, study your butt off. I go to class every day and take fairly good notes and I've gotten 2 Cs and 1B on the three tests he has given
he is very friendly and tries to make a boring subject interesting. i'm sure he's a really funny person outside of class but in class his lecture is very.. confusing. he goes off on tangents a lot and doesn't stick to once certain pattern. his class is pretty easy though and he does try to get you as many points as possible
Hilarious, understanding, and easy. Always gives second chances. As long as you want to pass, then he'll do his best to help you. Try your best to get Shank before any other prof in the department.
the class was soooo boring. he talked extremely slow and very obviously is not interested in his class, students or what he is teaching. but attendence was not taken, so I skipped a lot. would not inform students of their grades. only good part was that he cracked some funny jokes in class from time to time. something about him was creepy old man.
Words can not describe the revulsion I and several of my classmates felt for this man. I felt like I was in a 3rd grade class. There was no text, we had to rely on his "wisdom". Fouls all around. Hire someone worth my tuition please.
Something about him I did not like. He just came off as cold and rude sometimes. A couple people complained of missing assignments from his class. I attempted to be nice to him but he was very rude. There's something creepy about him.
Mr. Shank is a funny guy; however, his teaching style needs a lot of work. There is no structure to his lectures. When it comes to tests, yes they are open notes, but you have no clue about what part of what he is saying should be taken down as notes. Very hard to follow. Labs are the best part of the class... if that says much. Great guy though.
This is the professor that all the atheletes take. Enough said.
I had Shank back in the spring of 06 he's a cool teacher. He likes to make jokes about electrical Bonds "James Bond" which gets a little old but still some funny ones in there. All you gotta do for this class is study a little bit and you'll pass. I recommend him if you want the ez teach.
All around great professor. I don't like science too much but he hit some interesting subjects. The only thing I didn't like was that I had to get up on a saturday(gameday)morning. But other than that he sometimes lets you use your notes on the test and you don't have to buy a book for the class. You also go out for field trips every now and then.
I hated this class. Lectures were so random, but the tests were open note.
I hated it! OMG! Talk about boring. Lectures were all over the place. So hard to follow. He went so fast, he still wouldn't slow down when we asked him to. So many notes! So much useless data and numbers. He never told us what our grades were. It is the end of the semester and he still doesn't have our midterms graded! Inexcusable!
This was a totally pointless class if I didn't have to take it for my ISC requirement. He was so all over the place in his boring lectures (while it was 100 degrees in the room) & we didn't have a textbook to follow, so notes are all you have to study. He is not that helpful & can be very rude.
Boring lectures, hard to follow. Test from notes, 100 questions each time but half are open book. I recommend his class though he does seem to care.
Class was boring, but the tests weren't that bad. If you've had biology in High School than this class is a breeze. I hardly read anything, and just studied my notes. Tests are open book for the most part, and the quizzes help your grade so even though it's not mandatory to go to class, you will be screwed if you don't take the quizzes.
The class isn't that bad. He goes all over the place, so it tends to be hard to follow but he repeats often and lectures from the book, so you can get the gist. 2 tests are open book, BUT STUDY FOR THEM!!They tend to be harder.Quizzes every Friday, make sure to take them!!(they help low test grades)Also go to all labs, they take the best 10 of 12.
He's a really nice guy but he doesnt seem to follow any sort of outline. Your notes will be all over the place. the tests are hard but he gives extra credit for each test. hes pretty easy going. quiz every week though!
This guy rocked! Take him, his class is so much fun, and so easy! He really wants you to learn about things that are important pertaining to the earth and environment. He is one of my favorite professors at Marshall, I'm taking him for all the sciences I can
PROS: He provides many oppurtunities for extra credit. He seems interested in the subject material. He will clarify anything in the lecture you don't understand. He has two open note/book tests. CONS: His lectures are normally unorganized. TIPS: Although the text is never required, try reading the text before the lecture.
I had the summer class and Shank is the man. Your usually in class for about 3 hours but its only for 4 weeks so it goes pretty fast. I thought the class would suck at first cause it was summer school, but I'm actually really glad that I took that course. I recommend Terry Shank to ANYONE and I hate science.
I took this class during the summer. It is an easy class. Just go to class everyday and don't miss the labs and you will do fine. Try to sit at a table that looks like it will be a good group, because the labs are group based. You have a couple of papers but they are easy to BS, just site your sources and you'll be fine.
Class was pretty easy as long as you listen to the lectures and read the chapters. I kick myself for not getting an A.
He's a good guy and all, but his lectures suck, he is all over the place and it's hard to even take notes for this reason. His tests are REDICULOUS. You have 50 minutes to take 100 question test....yes 30 seconds PER question...almost impossible. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone who has trouble with biology or test taking.
Shank is very good. I never read the text because he goes over everything you need to know in his lectures. His tests are 100 questions, but very repetitive, so if you know the material it doesn't take long. He's very funny in a subtle way, and will explain and assist as he can. Great Prof.
though his notes are all over the place, hes a pretty good prof, in general. definitely one of the funniest teachers ive ever had! hes seriously hysterical, but in a subtle, intelligent way. i am very conservative, and yes, hes definitely liberal but i still love him. would definitely recommend him to anyone taking the class!
This class was fairly okay, but the notes are all over the place when you are finished with his lectures and he can be very rude at times as well. Evolution is a big thing with him and he is bot very helpful when you ask questions. A quiz is every week and his tests are extremely difficult. Thank goodness that he grades on a curve.
Not a bad class at all. Tests are long, but study the notes from lectures and youll do fine. If youve gotta take biology, hes the prof to take.
Not a bad teacher, but all over the place. He also uses an outdated textbook you can no longer buy, so it's nearly impossible to read the chapters he lectures on, because they don't match up. Tests are long and difficult, but he grades on a curve. Warning: Your lecture notes willbe scattered and somewhat incomprhensible.
Do not recommend! Messes up the material really bad - i had this class in high school so it was a breeze but he made false statements and misspelled everything. Was also rude and a dirty old man. Stay away if you wish to actually learn ( stuff that's true, anyway )
Took this in the summer..watched a lot of films, a few labs.Take a ton of notes..they are scattered all over the place.Test questions are somewhat confusing. He can be blunt, and he's not going to baby you.Mostly he's pretty laid back as long as you pay attention and get your stuff done.he will try to help you as much as he can. i enjoyed his class.
Did not follow syllabus, spent too much time trying to indoctrinate impressionable undergrads with his left-wing videos that had nothing to do wih biology but plenty to do with politics, made an ignorant comment about capitalism. also kept talking about how scientists work in "groups" like he wanted kids to remember this. Comtean-esque.
This is the worst professor ever! I can handle no textbook, but what kind of GOOD professor has a syllabus that contains no assignments, no deadlines, no point system, basically, no structure at all?! If MU can charge us all of this money for smoothie shops and Starbucks' then they can use some to get some new teachers! I hate this class :(
I have taken this professor two times. His method of teaching is all over the place. Half of the time you don't know what he is writing on the board. I don't think the class is extremely hard but if you don't go to class and get the notes then it might be more challenging. Most or all of his tests are open note.
You either love him or you hate him, depends on your political views. EASIEST CLASS EVER. Just take notes everyday (use on exams)and make the most of the material. There are no deadlines, just get stuff out of the way early. I personally enjoyed his off topic, political discussions. Gives extra credit if you pick up trash on the field trips.
Nice guy...lectures are long and boring, but he is a very fair man. A lot of dry humor but he'll make you laugh...labs aren't too bad eaither. Overall he's a great professor. Would take again
show some the effort TERRY will notice visit his office occasionally!!! he will negotiate grades!!!! TERRY!! TERRY!!
Terry clearly enjoys his teaching and he has a lot of knowledge to share. Sometimes the notes on the board are unorganized and his sense of humor is quirky. You need to show up and take notes to comfortably pass his open-note exams. His labs can be boring, but very interesting, as well. The subject is worth learning, and Terry is awesome!
Terry is a great instructor for both the lecture portion and the lab. You'll learn a lot, as long as you show up and take notes. He's really funny and very knowledgeable, so, needless to say, his class is both humorous and informative. I'd recommend him to anyone.
Professor Shank has a lot of knowledge to share. Many of the project requirements are broad, so participation is the main grade. I had him for first year seminar, and it was nearly impossible to fail.
Great professor but his lectures can get boring. His class is easy, take notes every day, you can use them on the tests. There are a couple little assignments and one project but not bad at all. Tells a lot of jokes and talks to everyone. Would recommend.
It's an easy A as long as you go to class and do the little work he gives out. Other than a few reading stuff here and there and watching a few videos too, nothing really goes on in class. Good professor, but just offers a boring lecture.
Go to class every day and do the labs which are mostly movies. Take notes on everything he says cause you can use your notes on tests, then you will get an A. He is extremely fair and wants everyone to do well. He tells old time jokes that are so stupid they are funny. I would take him again and recommend him to everyone. No book either. Summer3
This class was very easy. We only had two assignments all semester and the rest was just in class discussions. He never used the textbook.
Pro. Shank is an easy going guy. He has lots of dry humor that usually only he thinks its funny, but then again that makes it funny I guess. You have 3 exams and a Final. They are not tough, just study the 10 essay questions that he gives you for each test! He pulls about 4 from the 10 for each exam and bases the total test content off of these.
Terry is the most scatter brained professor there is when it comes to his FYS class. He never knows what he is going to teach. Every class period was a waste of my time. He has dry humor, and can be a total jerk too. He does not update grades until AFTER final grades are due. He does NOT go by his syllabus. Don't take him for if you don't have to.
He won't give you any type of review for any tests, we don't have a book it's just what he wants to teach off the top of his head. A lot of what he says in class isn't on the test and what's on the test we didn't even review. But if you do your labs, which are usually easy but sometimes long, you should have a decent grade. Wouldn't take him again.
This class is perfect for people who are not science majors. It is refreshing to have a professor who is understanding of your schedule and other commitments and of the fact that most of his students are not science majors. I wish all professors would be that understanding.
Professor Shank was very easy and lectures were interesting and enlightening. Everything in the lectures was basic yet important and was listed verbatim in quizzes/tests. Notes could be used on tests. Most of the grade consists of the weekly lecture quizzes and three tests. Very funny and understanding. Solid choice for a basic lab credit!
Professor Shank is a nice man with a great sense of humour, who brings group discussion and interesting documentaries to the classroom. His FYS class lacks structure and organisation, and there is no strict syllabus, but it's still fun and surprisingly enlightening. He's witty and down-to-earth; highly recommended if you seek a laid back FYS class.
Very chill dude. Falls asleep during class. Show up, do work, you have nothing to worry about.
he makes some good jokes. lets you make up quiz's without an excuse.
TAKE HIM! This professor is such a nice guy and always walks into class with a smile on his face and always just seems happy to teach his students. He allows you to use notes on tests, and lets you makeup work that you missed. He clearly states what will be on the tests and there is a weekly quiz in his class. He is funny and is a joy to listen to.
