If you have any Biology class with Dr. Van Raay, expect to be pleasantly surprised. He's great with notes, crystal clear really. If you attend class, and read daily, you will do really well. My first half with Dr. Van Raay was great, and the second half with Colasanti was terrible. Van Raay is clear and concise while Colasanti was scattered.
Lecture slides were unclear and his explanations were surface understanding that you could get from 1 minute of googling. Worked very hard on keeping notes and having a thorough understanding and struggled on his awful, confusing and poorly written (bad grammar, unclear questions, mistakes) midterm. Finally, he would make sexiest comments in class.
Van Raay is a pretty cool funny guy. He has clear lecture slides that we can print and write on, always respectful & reasonable to students, and passionate about the subject. I wish he could teach all of BIOL1090, instead of just one portion of the class. He is clear in explanations and you can always go to him to ask for help.
Decent guy, tried to be funnier than he was. He does try to help you understand, and he tries to make himself accessible for office hours and stuff. I feel like maybe he's be better if he didn't teach a first year course and didn't have to pretend to be hip to keep people's attention
His clicker questions are very confusing but it helps having him do them so that you get a feel of the way the questions will be worded on the midterm. He is fairly clear with his lectures and info
10/10 good professor. Everything he teaches is clear and his personality and self-deprecating humor makes class more entertaining.
He seems like a nice guy and the material in this course is interesting, however some clicker questions are extremely confusing and the midterm was worded very awkwardly. Sometimes it seems like he is trying to make us do poorly.
The worst prof ever. He has terrible notes and goes through them so fast you never have anytime to write anything down. His assessments are extremely hard and tricky. It is better to teach information to yourself because he is terrible at explaining and makes everything sound more confusing then it really is. Wastes time with iClicker questions.
Prof. Van Raay is a nice person, though he doesn't seem to know how to explain things properly and tend to rush to the end. Lecture PowerPoints were poorly made relative to the other professor. Would NOT take his class again.
Dr. Van Raay is passionate about biology and research but I do not get the same feeling for his outlook on teaching students. Lectures were fast and iClicker questions were often used as a "trick" to make you think more, yet sometimes came out of class more confused than I was before. Overall, not awful but structure could be improved through pace.
I really enjoy Terry as a person (would have wine night with him), but sometimes he blasts through content and makes his lectures very difficult to follow along.
dont take the class unless you want to learn about zebrafish
Not a bad prof, but I found that he rushed through content very quickly and he didn't really take the time to explain anything in depth during lecture. His slides were also not great and the iclicker questions he used were always trick questions, but thankfully the midterm wasn't anywhere near as confusing.
Although he went fast through the materials, he was often very clear about what exactly we needed to know as well as he always did iClicker questions which offered clarification on everything we learned in the day. He always made sure everyone understood. I really found his personality enjoyable and would take every bio class with him if I could.
His lecture slides are great, he does add too much during lecture but does a LOT of examples during his lectures through iclicker. Because he does so many examples he goes through the content really fast but it is all on his slides. He is a great prof to go up and talk to and likes being concise (not fluffing things).
He loves doing clicker questions during the lecture and even if you get the answers wrong you get 100% for participation marks that counts toward your final grade. Overall a great prof that has some great research projects going on that he loves to talk about.
His lectures were very boring and monotone. He went through material very quickly and his slides were not organized very well. The textbook was my best friend because his lectures were sometimes confusing. It's obvious he is not doing this because he wants to. Not the worst professor ever, but needs improvement on almost everything.
Dr. Van Raay was a great prof! I did find though that he tended to rush through his powerpoint slides, though he did do a good job of explaining concepts. He used iClicker/Reef software a lot for participation, but since it didn't matter whether you got the answer right or not, they were free marks. Talked a lot about zebra fish though
Dr. Van Raay is hilarious and friendly, but his assessments often ask details that you would think are not as important, while not asking things that you would assume are in fact important. To his credit though, even though the class averages on them were in the late 50s, he would bell-curve. He also can be confusing when explaining tough concepts.
A really great professor. I had him during in-person lectures, but I sometimes watch his online recordings for the online sections as well. Clearly cares for the students, a lot of tech difficulties (more from zoom, I'm sure), but he would re-record and would re-upload recordings of the lectures. Really helpful and insightful.
Super nice guy who shows that he cares about his students. He had to deal with a lot of tech issues and he was always kind enough to re-record lectures to make sure we had all the info. He's also funny af and super approachable
He tried his best, but as an online student there were many tech issues that he had to work around. Overall did a good job teaching the material but sometimes went very fast
I appreciated the enthusiasm and understanding shown in his lectures, and his sense of humour! My one qualm is that there were a couple questions on the final about details he implied not to be important, but those questions made up a very small fraction of total marks available.
Boring. Only talks about zebrafish.
Lectures were not engaging, but he delivered the content fine. Was clear about what we needed to know/didn't need to know. Exam was killer, but this course is known to be difficult
His portion of BIOL 1090 (genetics) is simple but the midterm can be surprisingly difficult for some. Lectures were somewhat engaging but he's a funny guy. Genetics is definitely less content heavy than the second part (cell biology).
scribbles on his ipad (that isn't hooked up to the doc cam), always has computer issues and inappropriately swears because of this, lectures are not easy to follow along with. if you can find someone else to teach the course i'd suggest you do.
Not very tech-savvy, making it difficult to succeed in the ADS-virtual section. All he does is draw on his iPad, and you can barely see what is going on. Makes concepts more difficult than they need to be. Wouldn't recommend.
If you're taking him it better be because there are no other professors. Doesn't seem to understand that we don't know what he's talking about, and that he's supposed to teach us. He clearly knows what he teaches but DOES NOT know how to explain it. However, he does make sure to have lots of office hours, which is nice. Still wouldn't recommend.
I'm disappointed as I had Dr. Van Raay for 1090 last year and I loved him, but this year was not the same. His lectures were confusing and extremely hard to follow, and his exam focused on tiny details that were barely covered throughout the term with questions that were difficult to understand. Overall he made the class way harder than needed.
He was unclear but I still felt like he was a decent prof. That was until I wrote the exam. He provided us with little to no insight or guidance, told us that our seminars & quizzes would be useless and provided no study material. The exam was mc but half of the qs were "select all that apply" with no part marks. Felt like he set us up for failure
Very nice person, not a good professor. The exam was not accurate to what was taught. Too difficult for a final exam. Didn't reflect any of the resources given to us, such as the quizzes and seminars. Lectures were disorganized and not taught super well.
Dr. Van Raay's lectures are a mixture of speeding through the notes at light speed, writing notes on the slides in what could only be described as scribbles, and ignoring student feedback. The exam was unfair and did not reflect the course's main ideas, but instead focused on tiny details students were expected to memorize. I wouldn't recommend :(
Really nice guy, an okay lecturer, terrible test maker. He's asks for feedback and adapts which is nice. Needs to work on the 'why' portion when he walks through answers and take the perspective of someone who is seeing all these things for the first time. Today's exam did not reflect content focused on lectures almost at all.
I would really avoid this prof. Feels like he's setting us up for failure with after writing his final which was based on tiny details that were hardly covered with many select all answers. He's a nice guy but a terrible prof.
He was good in class but by god the exam was so screwed. Not a single seminar was reflected in the exam, not a single piece of material we were told to study was on the exam. I have never experienced such a confusing test in all of my years of education.
I found the content given to us in the first half of the course through seminars and the online practice tests well reflected the midterm (as one would hope they exist for). I studied for the exam with the same approach, only to find it consisting of random side topics that were barely discussed. I have never felt so set up for failure by a prof.
Quite honestly one of the worst profs I've had. He is a nice and funny person, but his lectures are not engaging, he scribbles on his ipad as a form of teaching, and provided no clear expectations of what would be on the exam, which was one of the most unfair I've ever written.Focused on tiny details barely mentioned in class.
His rushed lectures and unreadable handwriting hinder understanding. Instead of delving into subject intricacies, he skims. This would be fine if exams tested overarching concepts, but they focus on minute details. Despite enjoying the course, I'm disappointed in the final exam's formulation; it feels designed for failure.
I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, but based on other's feedback, I was not the only one who thought it was not easy to understand his lectures. They were messy and unorganized, I had to do further research and look up online videos to understand the concepts. Even then, it was to no avail, nothing could have prepared me for that final.
absolutely nothing could've prepared me for his exam. Provided no guidance and did not tell us what we were expected to know. Tested very minor details that were barely spoken about and the exam was entirely focused on memorizing the smallest details.
This prof tested us on material that was barely discussed in class/lectures. The exam set us up for failure and was really upsetting.
Exam was way too difficult and tested us on very specific content that was not specified in the lectures or course content!
avoid at all costs. never seen a worse final. No guidance was provided. did not mention there would be "select all that apply" questions with no part marks. failed to test the major concepts discussed in class, instead tested the most discrete information that was barely acknowledged.
the exam.....
he was truly setting us up for failure. Did not prepare us for the exam whatsoever
Every second of my life was in constant agony when he taught us. I was thriving in my class and enjoyed life when I had my old professor teaching this course in the first half of the semester and the second he took over it was like life was sucked out of my life and it went from colour to black and white. Bro was a robot jus reading off slides.
I'm paying thousands of dollars for this guy to read off slides and scribble on an iPad which is filled with tech issues, where he gets mad and curses. Does make funny jokes sometimes. The final was close to impossible and was possibly the most traumatizing experience of my life (I'm an orphan)
Avoid at all costs. Never seen a worse final in my life. No exam guidance was provided, didn't mention there would be "select all that apply" questions with no part marks, told us the practice quizzes were useless and so much more. He failed to test the major concepts discussed in class and instead tested the most barely acknowledged material.
the mbg2040 final was unbelievable. nothing else to say.
His teaching style is not the best. It can be hard to follow. However, his exams are fair. His exams are based on his slides and if you study well you shouldn't have an issue doing well in the course. The exams are tough but fair. No out-of-the-box questions that arent covered in the slides.
Terry Van Ray is a very bad teacher. Mumbles most of the lectures, scribbles on his Ipad and calls it writing, swears at the Zoom crashing every 2 seconds and speaks really fast and technical about content being learned for the first time. Hardest and worst final exam ever given, with multiple select answers.2 thumbs down for zebrafish man.
Terry says he cares about students succeeding but I wouldn't be surprised if 80% of people failed the final! I hope he has zebrafish for dinner.
worst prof. consider retirement
Decent professor, exam was weird. Prof was funny tho so ima bump bro up to a 3 star fr.
May God give Terry Van Raay what he deserves. What an unfair exam. He took away my will to live.He is definetely enjoying the fact that 90% of the class failed that exam. I hope he finds a little bit of compassion and empathy in his heart. To my future students, avoid him. You don't deserve what he's going to put you through. Choose to be happy!
my man is so funny. but i hope he wakes up bald after what he did today
I would take this class again. Dr. Van Raay is a funny professor. He once started using profanity because he couldn't find his mouse on the screen. His teaching style is confusing, however, his exams are based off of his slides. And they are a tough but fair game. As long as you study, you will do well. The textbook explains really well too.
Professor Van Raay genuinely cares for student success. Assessments are challenging, but feedback is constructive.
crying and throwing up.
final exam was absolutely ridiculous. made it so hard that even the smartest students could not understand. not fair at all.
Honestly, I think he's an amazing person who genuinely cares about his students and you can tell he tries really hard to help his students succeed. It's just disappointing that the final exam did not reflect that. His lectures did not focus well on what he was going to test us on, I don't think creating exams is his forte.
The lectures were sometimes hard to follow and I had to review the material independently to fully understand it. However, I did find all assessments fair and putting the right amount of time into learning the course material would've led to a decent mark in the course. I do believe the prof cares for the success of his students.
One of the worst exam structures probably ever, avoid at all costs. Anyone saying it wasn't that bad is completely delusional and is probably a TA or an alt account of his. Marks are not even back which tells you a lot about the validity of these "good" ratings.
I found the content to be very manageable, however found the final exam to be difficult as some of the questions and choices were very vauge.
so upset. exam was ridiculously unfair.
Terry really threw a bus at as for this exam. Questions were not about concepts in the course but minuscule details that had to be memorized. Now I am going to fail this class. Very disappointed.
**BIOL*1020** NOT 1090 - This semester was apparently the first time he taught it. Dr. Van Raay was a good professor, he made himself very available for help and was sure to mention his office hours regularly. The course was weighted based on 2 large midterms (42%), and a couple of assignments. He grades fairly, but with a no-BS approach. :)
Good professor during lectures however the final exam was extremely confusing and the some questions were very unclear.
He cares about the class but writes in hieroglyphs. Considering how much content he covered, I think he did fine teaching it but STUDY THROUGH THE SEMESTER for this exam!! I went into it in the 90s and doubt I'll leave with that. And to those 5 star ratings already telling their final grade??? It was a few days ago huh
I think Dr. Van Raay wants his students to succeed, but doesn't know how to? He is very kind and is great at answering questions in class and providing clear explanations, but his exam was probably the worst one I've ever taken. He didn't enforce all the minor details we needed to know, and while I get that exams can't be easy, they should be fair.
The final exam did not reflect the content in the seminar and was very hard to understand with poorly phrased questions
Two thumbs down. Exam was not a good evaluation of content taught in lecture or seminars!
Words cannot describe how nightmarish of a prof Terry Van Raay is. Unsure what I'll be ending MBG with after that heinous ordeal of an exam. Tested on minuscule details found in one sentence on one slide throughout the course. Defeated the whole purpose of multiple choice by marking multiple of the multiple-choice answers as correct on the final.
Very difficult prof. The exam made me want to k m s. Avoid at all costs. He was so proud that he wrote the exam himself but i think it's time for retirement. Lectures were also just hard to take in so there was no hope for the exam.
He truly cares about the success of his students. He's trying to figure it out still (so have hope!) but he makes it difficult to follow content in-class and has some questionable exam questions (weird wording, kind of nit-picky). Nonetheless, he's funny and one of the cooler profs I know, so props to him. Other ppl bashing him are probs js bitter.
He's a decent prof but you can't cram for his exam. Know everything well and you should do well. He cares about his students but blind sighted us with that final
He does care about teaching his students the material and responds to the feedback the students give. However, the way he teaches can be difficult to understand but overall is a good prof.
he cared about his students but was a tough grader and focused on small details. he tried to teach as best he can though so that people can succeed
tvr was far from the perfect prof but he genuinely cares about his students. lectures can be hard to follow,he moves quickly and his handwriting is subpar.he is attentive and detailed in office hours.exam was difficult, but due to complaints he changed formatting of some questions after the exam. he cares, and some reviews on here are far too harsh.
Great professor, testing was a bit confusing, but as long as you read the textbook and went to the lectures it's not that hard.
Online lectures were just him recording his iPad, constantly swiping away from slides to go on random tangents in his notes app in illegible handwriting. Often glossed over important concepts and focussed on random details. Insanely hard exam with spelling mistakes and "choose all that apply" questions that had nothing to do with course content.
As an MBG major who genuinely enjoyed the content of this class, TVR simply did not teach it well. His handwriting was illegible and his lectures were messy and not engaging whatsoever. Many questions on the final exam were poorly written and a lot of core material focused on in seminars and lectures was omitted in favour of minute details.
It is a LOT of material to cover in a short half a semester. Takes your notes after EVERY lecture attend SLGs if you can! Good luck!
Not sure what happened as he was much better last year. Lectures weren't structured well, jumped in between topics and tended to ramble on. Handwriting was illegible most of the time. Little practice material given, exam tested obscure details and things we were told not to memorize/study. Didn't care about complaints until many students did so.
Not a good professor in any regard. He goes through lectures SO fast, swore quite colourfully when his tech didn't work, and wrote the worst exam I've ever seen. Tested on the smallest details on one slide rather than the actual concepts. The exam was "curved" since the average was so bad on the select all that apply. Avoid if you can!
This course is very content heavy, especially the second half, that's no secret. However it isn't impossible to get a really good grade. Van Raay posts all his online recordings so his in-person lectures are pointless to attend tbh. It's a hard course, but if you put in the work then it won't be as bad as it's made out to be.
Goat prof
Oh boy, Terry is one interesting guy. Swears often, illiterate in technology and his handwriting could sell as abstract art. Additionally, the veins in his forehead begin to bulge when the class noise level reaches above 30dBs. Other than that, the lectures are boring but understandable. Needs anger management skills.
He's a good, hilarious prof and a caring guys. He would just basically set up a 1v1 meeting outside his office hours to guide me through the problem. But his lectures is super heavy loaded with 70+ slides each (basically go on every details) and he flies through the lectures really fast (I replied a text msg and then I was 5-6 slides behind).
Awesome prof, recorded all the lectures so we didn't have to wake up for an 8:30 am class. They were also great, i loved that he drew out the processes and on the pictures of complicated diagrams in the slides, it made it so much easier to understand. The exam was exactly what he taught too thank god.
i was super nervous to have TVR for mbg based on the fall sem's stories but I can honestly say I shouldn't have been. He made a super fair final exam if you studied hard enough and kept up with material throughout the semester (go to SLG!!!) Also he makes funny comments during lecture but tough crowd at 8:30am in war mem lol. would take again!
Great Prof! It's his course, he's still deciding how he wants the course to be run, so he tried new things this semester. If the class does bad, he changes the grading so the grades aren't bad. The assignments are fair, interesting, and easy marks if you take the time to do them right. The exams are fair, and based on lectures. Got 93%!
Great prof. There is a lot of lecture material, but the exam was fair.
Great professor. He records lectures and uploads them. He also tries to make things fun and interesting for his students. He gave a great practice midterm and practice questions before the midterm which really helped with studying. I knew what was expected of me and what I needed to know. Would definitely take again.
Nice guy who cares about his students. Although the tests were really difficult, he will do curves and answer questions as much as he can. Assignments were fairly marked.
Van Raay is a divisive type of prof, but as a first-year taking his intro to bio course (bio1020), I found him super chill and the work surprisingly simple. I only took gr.11 bio yet the course load, content and work was easily approachable. All my exams are multiple choice and the labs are super easy. Solid 1st year course for a sci credit.
Dr. Van Raay is not the greatest prof i've ever had. He goes way too fast during lectures and his Iclicker questions are insanely difficult. On top of that, he gives you MAX 1 minute to answer the questions. Also, don't even bother writing down what he manually writes in the board because it's basically chicken scratch…
He explains concepts well and isnt afraid to speak his mind. dont talk in his class...
Even though he goes fast, lectures are explained well and material is clear. He's good at clarifying when people have questions. He's also not afraid to tell people off so beware if your loud in class.
Great lectures, tough but fair exams. Recorded videos helped a lot for study prep. Used Unstuck ai alongside the class materials - it saved me time and made the concepts click.
Terry explained concepts well, however his handwriting is illegible and his extreme obsession with zebrafish freaks me out.
Had him for the first half of Bio*1090 and I feel like I was well prepared for the midterm. Nothing was a huge surprise and the stuff that was focused on in class lectures were covered on the midterm. Textbook was a huge waste of time though.. wished I saved out on the money for that if it weren't for the online assignments.
Terry is definitely a nice man, but he teaches as if someone is holding him hostage and making him run through everything as fast as he possibly can. He is great if you ask him specific questions, but he is arguably too knowledgeable on his own content, because he lectures like he's at a conference and not teaching a class.
Used a "reverse lecture format" where we did the learning online and reviewed in class. Although that does mean a lot of work outside the class, if you pay attention to the posted zoom lectures they are very detailed and helpful. Very nice guy and the midterm was fair. Enjoyed his lectures (mandatory attendance).
Love this teacher! So funny.
The man has anger issues but the midterm was extremely fair and he is a good professor
Fair testing, clearly passionate about the content, overall good prof. He has awful handwriting and anger issues if you talk during his class.
basically reads off the slides for the entire lectures and video lectures, if you can read you'll be fine.
Terry you're a good teacher but holy stay away from technology. Couldn't do his own iclickers then blamed it on the wine he had when he made them. His recorded lectures would cut to random screens on his iPad. And even in class couldn't get the iclickers started half the time. I would take again if he goes to the apple Genius Bar for tech help.
Terry is great, but technology has made this man its arch nemesis. Iclicker never works on time in the lectures, and he gets very annoyed when students email him asking about their iclicker grades. His handwriting could be scratched onto a cave wall and archaeologists will think it's a newly discovered dead language. But video lectures were great!
He is very funny. Tests are pretty intense.
Very nice professor, clearly cares about his students' success. Lectures were very clear on what will be on the midterm. Wish we had him for the second half cause Narman Mortagy was the complete opposite. Go check her ratemyprof and you'll see why. Loved Terry though, I asked him to clarify something on the midterm and he was extremely helpful.
Girl compared to Narman Mortagy, DR Terry Van Raay was an absolute legend. Although sometimes he was confused in his lecs he still had the spirit! His exam was so fair and the content was straightforward. Missed him in the 2nd half fr
All lectures were easy to follow but I found some of the exam went beyond class lectures
Perhaps one of, if not the MOST overhated professor at the University. Don't get me wrong, his portion of BIOL1090 was very content and lecture heavy, but he was a very knowledgable professor who knew his material like the back of his hand. The midterm was fair, and as long as you put in the effort, there is no reason you shouldn't do fine.
What is the hate all about this guy is fire, caligraphy is kindergarten level though
I truthfully don't understand all the animosity towards him. I understand he's probably more difficult in different courses, but in 1020 he goes at the pace of the students and answers any questions people may have with only occasional issues. He also posts all his lectures as videos, so missing class is not a big deal either.
Love this guy he's great and passionate about his material. Obvious he cares about his students and wants them to do well. Had him for an easy bio elective but he was super funny and engaging, explained everything in a way that was easy for understanding and recorded his lectures which was great bc I sleep in.
Exam was very reasonable. Would be content heavy if you haven't taken biology previously in highschool.
