He uses real life situations (lots of sports talk to keep the guys interested) and is very easy to look at which helps the girls stay interested. I didn't have a clue about the class the first time, this time around I actually understood and enjoy going to class.

I honestly hate math, but I loved this class not only is he very attractive but he is really funny he always makes our class laugh. he made math as easy as possible and I actually understood it. homework is not collected but you can turn it in for extra credit on tests days, and all the tests are multiple choice. take his class you wont regret it!!

I enjoyed his class. Very detailed but there is alot of assignments, the assignment definately helped. Always make sure you show all your work during your test and you will earn all the points allocated. Definately an A+

Had him over the summer. He took time to explain concepts very well & was always watching for questions or people he thought needed more explanation. Very approachable guy that kept the class light by joking around. Can turn in your homework for extra credit. That said, he was a bit slow on grading (busy guy) but I would definitely recommend him.

Great Teacher!!!! Very funny but the lessons are hard. I encourage you to do home work and visit the math lab. Mr. Varvil give group activities that help so much with the test. If you do the homework, group activities and go to class everything else should fall in place. Homework not mandatory but is extra credit. He also offers other extra credit.

Varvil is a very good teacher he explains math to where you can understand it. He is very unorganized though. He lost one of my papers(which he found by the end of the semester) and gave my friend a grade for something that he didn't even do. Other than that I would recommend taking one of his classes :)

I took Varvil for MGF 1106 & 1107. He is a really thorough teacher and VERY patient!! I these classes homework was not required but extra 5 points on tests if you do it! Also go to success seminars for extra bonus points. Do urself a favor do the homework! Review the group activities & you will pass all his exams. He is Really Good yet very FAIR!

Highly recommend Mr. Varvil for college algebra. He's helpful and gives you many opportunities for extra credit, five points for perfect attendance and fifteen points for homework. If you can't stand group activities you might not want to take his classes. I also disagree with the gender comments, I'm a male and thought he was a great teacher.

Very nice and easy professor. Tries his best to make everybody understands by giving in exercises and and in class group work which helped me to understand every lesson. homework is optional and gives extra credit if you chose to do it. One of the most amazing Math teachers I have had in college. I took Statistics with him and I was able to understand absolutely everything. I was told statistics was a hard class but he made it crystal clear and I received a B. I would most defiantly recommend him for any of his Math classes. He makes math absolutely fun & exciting.

Awesome teacher and very understanding! He will help you if you need it. On the test he will grade harshly if you do not show enough work. Homework is extra credit for +5 points on the test so i suggest you do it!

Varvil is very personable but I have had better teachers. He grades incredibly harshly on exams, much harder than necessary, even if the correct answer is found. Some classmates failed a test that came to class every time. He has groupies but I prefer clear instruction and desire for student success. I will not take him again.

Prof. Varvil is one of the best professors i've ever had. He wants to make sure you know what goes on in class. Gives you some group work-which i didn't care for- but they helped made sure you knew what was expected on the exams! He likes when you participate and appreciates questions. He offers extra credit if you do ALL the homework.

Math has never been one of my best subjects and I got a 101% on one of his tests. He makes sure every understands before moving on. Varvil does not grade homework but if you do it, it is extra credit towards tests.

I have a hard time with statistics but Prof. Varvil explained the material clearly and answered all questions I had. He was available during office hours if I became confused about a problem. I am in a more advanced Statistics class now and am grateful for learning so much in Varvil's class. Do the homework and utilize the learning center!

Do not take this professor if you expect an A or a B at most in Calc 1. Varvil is a funny professor however his exams are ridiculous. I decided to withdraw from his class. It's his first year teaching calculus which is a scary thing. Half of the time when I was in class he would be learning along with us. His lectures are not clear. Just a warning

Mr. Varvil is very enthusiastic about each topic. Although the class was generally easy, he explains things in detail and makes sure everyone understands. Varvil tells corny jokes to make sure the class is still with him. Home work is extra credit towards tests, and he lets you know exactly what I going to be each test. No reason not to pass!

Loved Varvil, he's an awesome guy & great professor. Make sure you go to class & you will do fine. He explains everything pretty well and he's available if you need help. His tests are kind of hard but it could just be I hated Statistics. Homework is nothing like the tests, but good for extra credit (so do them). Group activities helped the most.

I am horrible at math and had to retake this class for grade forgiveness. The teacher really makes a difference in any class and Prof. Varvil is a great teacher. Very helpful and very clear. Works with you and explains things very well. I would take him for any math class. I worked really hard and got an A overall!

Lectures are good. Subject itself was difficult for me. You have 10 quizzes, 5 tests, 4 group projects and a survey project in his class. He is very nice and always willing to help. I believe he also had a study group that he helped those who wanted to attend. Never used the textbook either.

I took him for Topics in Math over the summer. I was worried because it was my first math class since high school and summer goes by much quicker. But Prof. Varvil did an excellent job going over the material. The homework was all extra credit, and the tests were straight forward. I'm going to take him again next semester for my other math credit.

Currently taking his summer elem stats class. lectures full class for the most part but he somehow makes them entertaining so time flies. Quizzes are usually open note in class. Tests are not too bad as long as you study and come to class. Does also give extra for doing hw out of the book, other than that you probably wont even use it.

Favorite math teacher at HCC. He can make even the most boring subject funny and interesting. Great at explaining things. Makes sure that everyone understands the lecture. He likes to call on random students to answer the questions. Lots of group activities. Assigns lots of homework, but it is not required (counts as extra credit).

Varvil was actually pretty awesome, easily in my top 3. Lectures for the whole class but keeps it very entertained. Took him this summer. 4 tests w an optional final. 10 quizzes. 4 group assignments. Gives 5 extra credit for hw due on test days. I was able to pass the class with an A without taking the final, but I do catch on to things quickly.

Mr. Varvil is a great teacher. He explains topics very clear. Ask as many questions as you need, he will make sure you understand. You have homework on each section covered which is done on my math lab (online). There is a test and group project for each chapter. Definitely go to every class, missing a lecture will only hurt you.

Thoroughly explains things and goes as far into depth as possible if needed; which is especially helpful for notes(and if you skip, your only hope is to copy good notes from someone). He likes to put everyone into groups before test to work on a group assignment. WAYY too much homework though, stressful!

He understands that math is difficult for most people and wants you to be able to learn. Highly suggest this course as opposed to Statistics or a higher level course. Go to class. Do the homework; not only will it help you learn but it counts as extra credit points on your test if you complete it.

His lectures are always entertaining and he'll explain things thoroughly if you don't understand something. If you fail the class, it's either cause you're not paying attention or aren't doing the work. It is an easy A if you try!

He was probably one of the best teachers I've had by far. He considers your time needed to study, but make sure you do. Lots of homework, but if you didn't practice it in the homework, there would be no push to learn it for the test. Don't be afraid to ask any questions. He doesn't care whether it's a "stupid" question or not. Also, he's hilarious!

He was a very entertaining professor and he'll work with you until you understand any problem. He assigns some group work every section, which can be very helpful. I felt like the tests were a bit harder than what we went over in class, but they were more comparable to the group assignments. I really enjoyed his class.

The book for this class is in the library. You can make copies instead of buying it. Group activities and homework will help on test.

I am currently enrolled in this professors class, he puts a lot of effort in helping every student. Ask questions if you don't understand and seek help, which he is willing to offer, and you should do just fine

Professor Varvil is one of the best overall teachers at HCC. He's patient, and does an excellent job going over the math problems. He will stop and help you if you have any questions, and he balances out the exams so if you don't do well on tests then you can still pass. There's a lot of online hmwk, but if you keep up with it then it'll help you.

Varvil is a great teacher and overall person, such a laid back guy that cares a lot for his students. For in class Statistics homework is completed through MyStatLab which includes one interactive assignment and one homework per section. I recommend going to class and doing the homework for that section that day. There are 3 tests and one final!

Prof Varvil was amazing! It was one of my favorite classes. He is very nice with grades. Just do your homework and study. Do not miss class! Because honestly you will feel like you missed out on a lot and things will get confusing. He's a very kind and funny professor. He is one of my favorite professors. He explains very well and makes it easier.

All I can say is DO NOT get behind on homework! This class is test heavy, so every point counts! That being said, Professor Varvil provides as much helpful information as he possibly can and truly wants his students to succeed. Take advantage of his willingness to help, if you are struggling! At first, I thought I would be behind in assignments and dread this summer class, but so far professor Varvil is very responsive (within a few hours), has short, impactful virtual lectures, and I've been able to complete 6 assignments in 3hrs, which aren't due until 4 days from now. Bottom line, any reason for failing will be my own fault!

Best Math professor at HCC. If he taught Calc 2, I would 100% take him. Material can get difficult at times but Varvil makes the lessons a lot easier to understand. If you do not choose to register for his class, you are missing out.

Don't have enough room here to go in-depth but, he is a great math instructor. His tests seemed pretty brutal though, much harder than homework, lecture work and group activities. Also office hours are not great, 8am I believe. Overall now I'm halfway through Calc 2 and glad that Professor Varvil was my instructor for Calc 1.

A LOT of work so be prepared! Other than it being so much work, the online course allows you to redo the homework and assignments which helps bring your grade up. The test can bring you way down though. Test are worth 60 percent. Professor pretty much leaves you on your own which is fine , because if you have questions he is quick at responding.

Took Varvil online over summer. There is no doubt that stats is a hard class. Barely passed with a 90.0%. Lots of homework and took notes during interactive and wrote down practice problems (this def helped me with tests!! I would have failed if I did not take notes or write down sample problems). The test was fair but long and done online.

Hi is an amazing professor, and his lectures are very rich, however his test are the worst!! The test are super hard and confusing. I do recommend him as a professor, very funny and works until you understand the topic. DO NOT BUY TEXT BOOK, everything is done online and won't need paper text book. I wish he was better at testing.

Took him for MGF1107 summer. The class was interesting. There were 4 tests (1 optional final) 5 group activity and lowest test/activity score dropped. Lectures were long be wasnt bad and interesting. There was no HW (it was just extra credit added to test and it does add up! Got me an A). book wasnt needed (take pic from library)

I took this class after school because it was offered at the school as dual enrollment on mondays and wednesdays. While i was taking this i was taking Algebra 2 Honors and i still understood this class because hes such a good teacher. He drops your lowest quiz, test, and group assignment grade, final is optional if youre happy with your grade.

Professor Varvil was very helpful out of class, every time I emailed him, he would respond within a couple of hours. Anytime I asked him for one-on-one help, he would do a zoom meeting and help with any sections I was having trouble with and even recommended tutoring with links. Very helpful and informal when explaining as well. Recommend for sure!

Everything is on Mathlab. 4 tests. Having related practice tests. Instant response. Clear instruction. You can pass if you do the practice tests seriously. Highly recommended.

This is my second course taking Mr. Varvil for math, and I absolutely loved him, his courses are extremely test heavy (Up to 60% of your grade), but there are clear reviews and ways to get you studied for them, he is the most accessible teacher I have ever taken, I was on zoom with him alot to study for things I did not understand. Loved him.

Terry is a one of a kind teacher I have personally failed this class another time but Terry has the best teaching ability I have ever had. He could teach a rock math if he wanted.

Allowed to work ahead(exams too-HL). At the end of the semester he opens all of the past assignments to give you a chance for a higher grade(this helped me pass!!). Drops lowest test grade if you take optional final. Graded somewhat slow and didnt reply to 3 emails about missing grades so I took final because I didnt know grade. Would take again!!

Great professor. There are 4 exams, lowest is dropped. HW & quizzes have multiple attempts. There are 3 projects based on one data set, they are easy. Videos & practice tests are helpful & essential to pass the class, don't skip them! He responds to emails quickly. You definitely need to study, but everything is there for you to pass.

Although i unfortunately ended up with a C, that was completely on me procrastinating on assignments, He is such an understanding and compassionate professor when it comes to assignment and test deadlines, I have asked for 2 test extensions and he gave them to me. The class is test heavy but you should be alright as long as you watch the module vid

Make sure to watch lecture videos and take notes: 2 MyMathLab homework per week 1 quiz every 2 weeks 2 exams (30 questions) plus the final 1 short discussion every 2-3 weeks He goes straight to the point in the lecture videos. You learn what you have to learn, and you do not waste your time looking for extra sources to have a better understanding

Absolutely LOVE Mr. Varvil. I took his online course with live lectures and I cant speak highly enough about him. He is readily available for questions & stays late if needed. He provides lots of feedback and doesnt make you feel dumb when you dont understand. His tests are proctored but aren't difficult. I would take him over and over if I could!!

I highly recommend taking Professor Varvil's courses. Math is my most challenging subject & he was able to explain concepts in a way that was clear & easy to understand- he's very patient & kind. He's easy to contact & will meet to go over assignments & clarify concepts. If you struggle w/ math, take his class in-person & ask for help if needed.

His class was very straightforward and he teaches very well in his online videos! I would only say the tests do affect most of your grade, but he has study guides for the modules on his canvas which rocked. Congrats to the only professor who could help me learn geometry.

Professor Varvil is always ready to help! He also provided video lectures for MGF 1106 online which are always a huge help for completing assignments. Not too many quizzes, and only 3 HonorLock tests which reflect the homework exactly.

Professor Varvil made sure the content was delivered clearly. He made every concept easy to understand. Time management is big here, as long as you can do that, you will excel in this course! There are lecture videos and videos and PowerPoint's on MyLab (which is what the homework's and quizzes are on. I'd take him again!

Professor Varvil was an amazing statistics professor. The lectures were all recorded and he makes a huge effort to make sure everyone understands what is going on. You can meet with him in office hours if you have trouble, but I'd say this class is an easy A if you pay attention in class and take good notes. Definitely would take again!!

I took Prof. V and withdrawn twice including the same course. His tests are 60% of your grade and make or break your final grade overall depending on how well you test. His tests are also nothing like the reviews in my opinion. I spent over 2 hours taking the first test. He will do Zoom w/ you as long as you need, though and is v. patient.

Absolutely loved him. Gives you all the tools you need to succeed. He has videos for every topic where he explains everything clearly. I struggle in math and ended up still not getting the best grade, but it wasn't his fault. He was a breath of fresh air. Tests are weighted heavily. Genuinely kind and interested in helping students.

I loved how he provided video lectures breaking down all of the sections. I've never been more confident about math-related topics than I have been while taking this class. The only reason I have not received an A is my fault for accidentally missing a few quizzes. This class required a Mathlab access code which was unfortunate.

Mr. Varvil is an overall great prof. He breaks down concepts quite well and has the most hilarious dad humor you'll ever hear. One unfortunate thing that happened with our Statistics class is we ran out of time during the last couple weeks of the 16 week course. Because of this we covered difficult topics a bit too quickly and he lost some of us.

I would recommend professor Varvil. Honestly as long as you read all the text, do the homework, and complete the optional practice tests, you'll do fine in the class.

The course is entirely self-taught. However, Varvil has lecture videos for all topics and plenty of resources. Plus, he is always available to personally assist you. Very caring guy. Grading consists of homework problems, and a few quizzes and discussions, but a huge portion of it is based off the 3 exams (Varvil drops the lowest exam grade).

Professor Varvil runs a self-guided course, which works well if you're an independent learner. unstuck ai and the textbook are helpful study tools. Stay engaged, and you'll likely earn a solid grade.

The class was easy, few assignments and quiz weekly. Can easily pass but with the exams it makes it harder. The exams weigh heavily on your grade, and they are a little hard, making your grade drop heavily. But, overall good teacher and study for exams.

Mr. Varvil is just an awesome teacher, I had a hard semester hence the F, but I would be more than happy to take him again. He is patient and makes the materiel accessible- math isn't my strength but with his lectures it just makes sense.

Prof Varvil is still one of my favorite teachers since starting at HCC in '23. His video lectures are so helpful. Homework is easy, but there is a good amount. Honorlock tests are weighted heavy, but if you do the homework & watch the lectures, you should do just fine. He cares about students & gave 5 point increase if you review the test with him.

Since this is a math class (which I am not really good at) 60 points are taken from tests contributing HEAVILY to your grade. We also had a project for the class. Amazing lectures and explains the math material very well.

He was pretty generous with grades, allowing several attempts for quizzes and almost a guaranteed 100% on homework if you were willing to put the in work to understand it. He gave feedback if you asked, and was decently understanding. I am good at math, so this class was a breeze. I personally liked the platform used, but others might not.

BEST MATH teacher I've ever had. Funny asf, ACTUALLY teaches, really easy to follow along. You will LOVE him. 3 Test + final, couple of assignments every 2 weeks, do them early so they don't pile up since most are due same date. GO TO CLASS, you will be so lost if you don't!! He drops the lowest test grade. Do urself a favor and take his class!!!

He makes it very easy to understand the material, and if you do the homework you will 100% nail the material by the time the test comes around. Tests are worth a lot, but he does drop your lowest test grade at the end of the semester and does offer a bit of extra credit.

I took him for stats the class is pretty easy, if you do the homework and actually understand you will be fine you only have 3 test plus a final and he was really funny and always willing to help. I will say be sure to check the due dates for the last assignments at the end because it can bring your grade down.
