The best Prof I've ever had! Not easy though. Tests mainly on lecture, not book
Great lectures, it's as if he's acting in a play. If he writes a list on the board, write it down and memorize.
He is the reason I decided to major in Politcal Science when I took 250 as a freshman. Lecture is easy to follow, clear, and very enjoyable. I've taken 3 classes with him and will take as many as I can before i graduate. Top notch
That was the least stressful class that I had to take. Enjoy!
totally awesome prof! he's the one who made me decide to major in poli sci. very engaging lectures. likes to allow class to discuss. extremely helpful.
I hate Political science. Cant stand it - so i hated the class. but as a prof, he is good.
one word: AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome professor! One of my favorites at Western. Made Poli Sci so interesting. Was really fun to talk to about life outside of school as well; very personable. Would take any class from him just because he was teaching it. Got the entire class very into his lectures. Take him if you can!
He's cool. You only have 2 tests and a paper, so do good on his tests. He's nice and very funny. This one time he showed us a video of a snow storm in Canada and a woman was walking and fell, and he laughed so hard... it was so great.
Butch is the man. Tests were fairly easy, grades papers pretty easy. Great class though, covered all the bases of the American political system, very witty, I took him in the Fall during the election season and I'm really glad I did.
Great Prof. Fairly easy, keeps you interested. And in a class of 200, still manages to know you by your first name, that has to count for something
Butch is so funny. He makes me laugh so hard sometimes. And his tests are not that difficult, just study and you should get a good grade. He's awesome, he lets us out early and I LOVE HIM!
Really enjoyed this class. Great lecture style, relevant course material, and easy tests. Also, in a 200+ class, talked to me a couple times, remembered my name, my hobby, and talked to me about what he had heard I was interested in majoring in. Very personable, will take any class I can get w/him.
Very passionate about Canada which made the class fun and interesting. Although he is a fair grader beware..I didn't miss too many problems on my mid-term and ended up with a "C" But overall if you study and do well on the paper, pop quizes, midterm and final you'll be in great shape
Kamena is so nice and helpful he leant me HIS BOOK for the final when I lost mine. I was in a class of over 100 and over a year later he remembers me. Incredible. Hilarious lectures, lots of help if you need it, and fair grader. Highly recommended, fun and interesting.
He is truly a great professor. AT first he reminded me of one of those HS teachers who don't care. But he DOES and is very passionate about what he is teaching. He is a funny guy so his lectures are NEVER boring. Great Clas, Great Prof!
Butch is a rare breed. He loves what he teaches so much, and he has deep roots in this Canadian-American community. I was skeptical from day one, but he delivered with his passion alone. He be good.
This class was fun, straightforward, and fairly easy. You'll get to see some hockey, curling, and learn about what makes Quebec so different. I recommend it.
I had to drop this class mid-quarter for health reasons, but I wish I would have gotten to finish! He made American History of Politics interesting, something i thought was impossible, and i totally thought he was cute. Go KAMENA!
If you are a Poly Sci major then you have to take Kamena at least once. One of the most fun teachers I've had.
I love Butch! He's so awesome. Take his class!
Definitely one of the best teachers I've ever had. His lectures are very clear and interesting. And he's really nice too.
I'm posting even though I graduated 3 years ago. At the time Butch was just a clear teacher that made difficult matter seem easy--now I realize how useful alot of what he taught me is. (That's tough to say for PoliSci too!) I live in Asia, and work with many Canucks, so even the Canadian politics class has helped a great deal. Take his classes.
Butch is an excellent prof! He was so nice to me and set aside a good hour just to help me prepare for my final. Seriously is he such a nice guy and so easy-going, but at the same time I am learning so much in his class. Everyone take this class, or any class with Butch for that matter.
Butch, Butch, Butch. He calls himself that so his class is of course going to be easy. I never went to his lectures and I still did good overall. Just read and get notes from someone and you'll be golden.
He is so enthusiastic about Canada, which made going to class fun. I wasn't all that interested in Canada when I registered for C/AM 200, but it was really a good class and I learned a lot. Kamena also showed a lot of video material and did not base everything just on lectures, which was very nice.
Kamena is a good guy and pretty entertaining. It was my first class every morning, and I've only missed it a couple times (usually I get very annoyed of the same material every day). He even cancels class the day after every exam.
Take HIS section of this class. Best lecture prof at Western.
Easy, easy, easy. I went to lecture everyday, which probably helped but this is possibly the easiest 5 credit class you can take. Map quiz, midterm, one paper, final, various pop quizzes are all that's required. Reading the textbook not necessary. Very fun professor, I enjoyed his class a lot. He made me interested in Canada.
nice guy, really passionate about canada, i actually learned quite a bit. sometimes the class would drag on but typically he kept people interested. tests were ok if you studied for them. there's a paper too which he grades really easily.
While enthusiastic and well-versed in Canadian topics, the class was fairly disappointing. While the lectures are usually intriguing, the textbook is VERY poorly written and organized. The exams are just as poor. Don't ignore the study-guide, but best of luck earning that A.
Fun class! Lectures are interesting, and you can tell he knows a lot and is passionate about what he's saying. He brings in guest speakers that are really cool too. The textbook isn't necessary, but I would recommend reading the novel just because it's interesting and it's on the final.
This teacher is worthless. He uses the words "really, sort of, and doesn't really matter" way too often. Extremely vague, and never goes into detail. So boring I couldn't stand to sit through his lectures. He also has this "pause and effect" teaching style where he takes 30 min to explain a concept that could be said in a sentence or 2. Watch out.
Not the easiest teacher, but trys to make it seem interesting. Take notes and make notecards. Paper is pretty easy. Read the one and only novel he assigns, Final will be a breeze if you do.
Professor Kamena is great and I loved going to class. He knows a lot about the British Parliamentary system. I would recommend doing the reading before class and then definitely attending.
Took this class because thought it would be easy. Found out that it was pretty easy if go to lecture every day. Feel that I've learned a lot about Canada. Let class out early pretty much every day. Only had full class twice. Good mix of ease WITH a lot of learning! Highly suggest taking it!
Butch is the best! I went to class everyday just to get some good laughs in. Yes it is boring at times but it isn't hard at all. Not too much studying and overall pretty interesting learning about Canada! Take this class :)
Does a good job trying to make a somewhat boring topic interesting, but doesn't demand much of students. He does a mock question time at the end of the course which is a cool idea, but is to bad because he doesn't really encourage substantive discussion about anything throughout the class. Easy , but maybe not worth your time if you want to learn.
Great teacher!! Made the subject very interesting to learn. Makes you actually want to learn the subject and is a very passionate teacher. Awesome class, awesome teacher!!
Greatest professor EVER. He's passionate about Canada and made the class interesting; I actually enjoyed the lectures. This class is super easy if you go to all the lectures. I got an A on the paper that I wrote in one night and know that I will definitely get nothing lower than a B in this class and I haven't touched any of the required texts.
Take notes or you're screwed. It's just him telling you facts that'll be on the test. Memorize your stuff and read the books.
Attendance is not required, but if you go to his lectures and take notes on everything he talked about, you can get by easily. I didn't even have to open the textbooks. He's a good teacher and quite interesting. Knows what he's talking about. His tests aren't very hard either if you paid attention during his lectures.
Kamena is pretty boring. He spends a lot of time drawing out personal stories that relate poorly to the topics. He tries too hard to be a "buddy" to his students that when you go in to ask for help or clarification he beats around the bush and during classes his focus is everywhere. His slides aren't well proofread either. I wouldn't recommend him.
Kamena knows a lot about Canada, and it shows. He's a solid lecturer and I actually found myself paying good attention to him most of the time. The class is based on three exams, four pop quizzes, and an essay. Even if you're not super enthusiastic about Canada, I suggest taking this class as a GUR or an elective.
AWESOME class loved it he is such an awesome teacher the people who dont like him must not do the work. He is interesting and makes class fun the tests maybe a little challenging but he doensnt throw you any curveballs on the test whatever is on the study guide is on the test! didnt read the book much but im still doing well! Great for a GUR
Had Kamena for Canadian American Studies and he was super cool! I thought I would hate the class but it was very interesting. He has an answer to every question along with a detailed example. I would highly recommend taking one of his classes, he is the most engaging professor I've ever had. And go to the lectures! They're interesting and helpful
Kamena loves and knows Canada. Even if you are not interested in the subject, I'd think you'll come away with a solid understanding of Canada and Canadians from lectures. His enthusiasm make the course all the more interesting. Take notes and learn them as you will be tested on them. Don't write a paper based upon a lecture topic - be original!
Saying that this professor is worthless is an inaccurate and unintelligent statement. Kamena is extremely friendly, helpful, and knows what he is talking about. Go to class and take notes, his powerpoints are not online and they are extensive and extremely helpful!
I've had Professor Kamena in British Political System and Canadian/American studies. He's a very good speaker and has a thorough understanding of both topics. Make sure to make it to the lectures because he makes the dense material very clear. Grading was straight-forward and he offers occasional extra credit.
His lectures keep me awake when I'm tired early in the morning. I have learned a ton about Canada and had a good time doing it. I had never considered this class as a GUR, but you should definitely take it if you have the chance.
He was super interesting and kept me awake at 8 in the morning. All of the information for the test can be found in hes lectures, except for the book you have to read for the final. There is a paper you have to write, but it was relatively easy. Fun class, definitely recommend it to everyone.
Butch is one of my favorite profs. C/AM 200 is super easy (I wrote my paper on sports), but really interesting. PLSC 406 was hard because of the amount of work, but he still grades easy. He even gave me sources for my research paper. Great prof, great guy.
Can't say enough good things about Kamena. One of the best classes I've taken at Western, I learned a ton and greatly enjoyed the class. I highly recommend taking a class from him.
Great teacher! He is passionate about what he teaches. The book isn't a huge part of the class and the tests are just on his lectures. If you go to class and take notes, you will do well in the class! There are pop quizzes but they are usually pretty easy.
Good class! Interesting lectures, funny and he knows a lot about the subject. Very cool guy and understands the students. Test are all based on lecture notes. Essay are graded fairly and not too hard. Would recommend, the class made me want to live in Canada.
AMAZING class. He kept me interested every time. Kamena was such a great prof that He influenced my major to can/am studies. Incredible class, he knows his stuff and was really helpful when questions were asked.
Do yourself a favor DO NOT take with him. Awful test! As if he opens the book and randomly picks out useless questions.... There is no study guide, no reviewing. He puts slides from his lectures up a week before the test but almost nothing from them was on it. His lectures are boring, and he reads directly from his slides. Absolutely dreadful
By far my favorite professor. An absolutely incredible lecturer. Incredibly smart and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend going out of your way to take a class with him. Made me want to be a Polisci major.
Very excited aboot Canada. Very fun lectures. Terrible French.
Best professor I've had at Western. Canada is pretty interesting and he wants to share his interest with his students. Entertaining. Would 100% recommend.
One of the best lecturers I've had so far. He can go fast, but is patient enough to pause so the class can catch up with notes. PPTs are clearly organized. Good sense of humor/approachable. Loves to answer student questions in detail. Exams are not too bad if you really study. You don't rly need to read the textbook, exams are off lecture notes.
He has a format and sticks to it. Midterm, final, brief research paper, and a lecture everyday. Lectures are great, clear, not too rambling, and never boring. Least favorite thing are the pop quizzes just because of their content. It's all stuff about Canadian current events that you can't study for. You're kinda set up to fail on those.
I loved this Canadian class! Kamena makes sure to make the lectures engaging and funny. He uses great examples in class and he always asks if there are any questions at the end of each lecture. There is a bit of note taking and dreaded "Canadian News" pop quiz's and doesn't post lectures online, but I would take this class again.
One of the most interesting classes I've taken! He is very helpful and truly cares for his students! The class consists of 2 exams that are multiple choice, short answer and essay (essay only on final), like 5 pop quizzes and a research paper! Loved it! Highly recommended!
Butch is a good prof, but CAM200 can be hard to get an A in simply because there are only two exams (midterm and final), a couple pop quizzes that aren't worth much, and a five page research paper. If you really want that A, keep up on current events and study hard for the exams.
He is very knowledgeable about Canadian politics and his lectures kept me engaged at 8AM. The reading is a bit lengthy but tests are much more lecture-heavy. I would definitely take another class with him.
Not a difficult class. Great teacher. Usually lets us out 10-20 minutes early. The information is interesting and the tests are moderately easy if you pass attention in class.
this class is an easy A. 4 pop-quizes, midterm, research paper, and a final. thats it. you dont need the textbooks and all lecture slides are online so you dont really need to go to class. the pop quizzes are at random times so be aware of that but he gives you hints. overall, maybe go once a week. Easy A. i skipped alot and got an A-
I absolutely loved this class! Butch is funny and makes Canadian studies as interesting as I think it could be, he makes his lectures easy to follow but engaging. This was the first class I took at Western and Im glad thats the case.
Kamena is one of the best prof's at Western. He really cares about you understanding the material and being successful in the class. He tries his best to make the information as engaging as possible. Class was based on two exams, a simulation, and a paper, so not a lot of room to mess up but if you go to class and pay attention you will do great!
Kamena is a great professor. His classes are lectures but they don't take the whole class most of the time. He is engaging and teaches well. Even for people who take the class as a GUR its interesting. Only a couple tests, one paper, and pop quizzes but they really arnt hard.
He is a legitimately good prof. He does pop quiz's in this class but if you watch the news you ace them. He knows his stuff when it comes to Canada. Lectures are a bit dense but he is enjoyable to talk to and actively engages the class by answering questions from those curious enough to ask them. Good Prof
We rarely used the full class time and usually got to leave very early. He posts all the slides online. This is a super easy class with 2 tests, 1 paper, and 4 pop quizzes.
The class was fairly dry itself, but his humor does make it a little more interesting. I skipped a good amount of the class and still did alright. He gives out four pop quizzes but two are dropped so do not skip tooooo much, but you will want those points.
Professor Kamena's Into to Canada class was dry. Easy class. But you can tell he's re-used the same powerpoint lecture for many years now. Wrote a paper and got marked down for quoting from his own lecture/sources, which I thought was odd. Overall, easy A if you show up (random pop quizzes-easy).
Kamena is an amazing teacher! He's so passionate about Canada that the class is hardly dull. The class is a fairly large and very lecture heavy so get ready to write (or type) a lot. There were "pop quizzes" but you got a good warning ahead of time and their easy. Overall this is a class that normally would be boring as heck but was made fun.
Butch is a great professor. The midterm is tough and I got a D on it, but I ended up with a B- in the class because I practically aced everything else. I highly recommend Butch Kamena for Canadian Studies, easy 5 credit class.
I liked him! The class was overall easy and fun. Your grade is based off of a geography quiz, 3 current events quizzes, a midterm, a paper and a final. Review the study guides, and you'll do great. We had a textbook, but I never opened it and went with the lectures. I still got an A. My only complaint is that he can take forever to grade things.
I struggled a lot in his class. He seemed like a nice guy but had very dry lectures that have not been updated in a LONG time. Only graded on 3 things, so not a lot of room to mess up. Provided no study guides for tests and the questions seemed to be picked randomly from the textbook (which the lectures didn't follow). Couldn't wait to be done.
I totally forgot to rate Kamena after taking his course last spring. Just wanted to hop on here and say that we literally went to Canada for a field trip. The class wasn't the most interesting class I have taken, tests were tricky, but Butch is a fun guy the Canada trip made the class well worth it
Great professor. He gives very helpful feedback and is clearly very interested in the field. Pretty funny, with great stories related to the class material. His midterm/final are written tests and would likely be pretty difficult in-person. We missed out on the yearly class field trip to Victoria, B.C. because of the pandemic.
I took C/AM 406 in the spring of '20. I really enjoyed it. The assignments were easy. If you read the textbook, you'd be ok. The lectures were interesting.
Butch is one of my favorite professors at Western. He is super accessible and understanding, he is passionate about what he teaches and is a fair grader. This class tends to have fewer people in it so be prepared to have discussions!
Butch is an awesome person. I took his class in winter of 2021, and he's an awesome professor. He loves to talk about Canada and what it's got, he also goes on tangential personal stories of his time in Canada and it's pretty funny sometimes. There are spontaneous pop quizzes where you just need to know what's happening in Canada and a simple paper
To be honest, I stopped going to class after the midterm, but it was only because attendance was not required. Hes a great professor but be ready to sit through a lot of lectures. He knows what hes talking about and makes it easy to understand. I would definitely take him again but not at 8:30 am. Definitely take his class if you can!
Interesting lectures and relatively easy course work, besides the fact the class is graded on only 4 things. Prime Minister's Questions simulator at the end of the quarter was a very fun and interesting way to incorporate learning about UK politics. Sometimes hard to get a hold of outside class. Otherwise great professor.
Cares about what he is teaching. Beware of the few things in the grade book! Hes usually pretty clear about whats going to be on the two big tests (w study guides).
C/AM 200 is a really easy GUR class. It sucks that your only graded by 2 tests and one essay pretty much but he's a nice grader. The tests are very lecture heavy, he's not trying to trick you or truly test your knowledge on the subject which is nice. He also is a pretty funny guy, very approachable.
Made learning about C/AM fun and brought in guest speakers that made lectures interesting
This class was lecture heavy but it is so worth attending class! You get so much out of lectures. Pop quizzes are easy to predict and overall I loved this class! Just put in the effort and you'll get the grade you want.
I loved this class and Professor Kamena! He is very approachable and easy to talk to. The tests and essay were easy. Make sure you keep up on Canadian news though or else your not going to do good on the pop quizzes.
Butch is an amazing prof, I learned so much in this class. It is a lecture heavy class but, you will find it easy to feel motivated to go to lecture. There are "pop quizzes" but, if you go to lecture it will be easy to predict them.
Butch was the best, I had an exceptional time in his 406 course, so much so that It convinced me to also pursue canadian american studies. Could not recommend highly enough
Prof Kamena was great. The class was fairly easy, and you don't really have to attend lectures to do well. However, you are graded on a few things, which can be stressful. It is quite hard to get over a 90%, but it is still possible.
Butch makes this course enjoyable with his engaging lectures and amusing personal stories. While attendance is mandatory, the tests are straightforward if you stay on top of the material. Unstuck study helped me prep efficiently for the exams.
