very enthusiastic in his class, loves teaching, wont make you fall asleep 'coz he might pick on you! but the picking kinda helps to understand stuff.
He just read the points on the lecture notes. He seems trying to explain just the ease ones and avoid the difficult ones by telling you to read it yourself. This course involves calculations. So far, NONE has been demonstrated.
I love tax 500% & have pre-experience.I was 1000% enthusiastic B4 the semester. But u won't miss anything if u skip classes.I'm very disappointed.I agree we all have to study on our own;however,if prof prepares & organizes the lecture a bit different in an presentable & understandable manner, this course is full of fun & practical.Be fair & square.
He drags on with his questions and forces you to answer the question. He also continuously says to drop the course if you can't handle it. He's a university prof and not a counselor. Start teaching to subject and stop being so degrading to the students. We are all adults and know what we can handle and what we can't. Most of us have to take this to
Fairly speaking, understanding the CONCEPT is important than just doing calculations like a robot. However, the prof do not understand the process of doing the calculations is also a very efficient way to explain the CONCEPT. Being too extreme in either just talking concepts or doing calculations are both wrong approaches.True, he's tried to help.
I've learned alot in a class, the work after class feels like keep learning the rest.........I've learned only a little bit in a class, the work after class feels like learning everything from scratch. Of course, I do pay attention during both lectures........but they are different profs.
So here's the thing, to keep it simple: This Prof is a TERROR! He gave us fill in the blanks for the mt and it ade up 50% of the mt It was so hard that if you get one wrong, you end up getting the whole question wrong and you loose marks! He keeps stating it is imp. to understand TAX, but if you have fill in the blanks then u have to memorize tax!
Even though his lectures maybe a little dry and boring, his tests are INCREDIBLY easy. If you do your homework, you will notice that his Midterms AND EXAM are litteraly the exact same question but with different numbers. In addition the tests are also FILL IN THE BLANKS which makes it even easier! There is need to memorize any formulas!
If you do the assigned problems and try to understand the underlying concepts, you will do well. I loved his class and actively participated. Poor achieving students often don't prepare for the class nor pay attention to the prof, but complain that he doesn't solve questions for them. Grow up and solve it on your own. He's one of the best~
Prof. Hwong is a great prof. He will scare you at first, saying that people will drop the course, but don't be fooled by that. He has made an effort last term to make the exams much more straight forward than previous exams, so that was very helpful. As he always says, "As long as you do the assigned problems, you will do well in the course."
hes annoying!! so friggin annoyin..forces u to answer questions in front of class...and says alot of stupid things in class..but exams fairly striaght forward!!
If you study the lecture notes and do ALL THE EXERCISES that are recommended in the lecture notes, you will easily get an A+ in the course. The prof is so-so. He wastes a lot of time during class by not focusing specifically on course material. There is no point to go to class - you won't miss much.
didn't like his lectures. Too much talks about nothing.
Not Recommend!!! Get help elsewhere.
This is the first negative review I've ever given but this guy deserves it. He's totally useless and manipulative. There are so many great profs out there, don't waste your time and money on him.
Just one thing I don't get about York, is why don't they fire guys like him. My 2nd worst prof. ever. He is a miserable guy, who lacks communication skills. He tries to show he is in control, but most of the students just laugh at him.
Quite possibly, the worst prof, I ever had at York. Most of the students make fun of him in the class. He tries to exert control in class, making new policies like later comers have to sit at the back, but no one actually listens to him. Try not to laugh at him to much, he will make you pay for it in the exams.
Why York has this guy on payroll is beyond me. For starters, he doesnt teach anything: all the info is in the text book. Just read the book and you will be fine. On some of his exam questions he will penalize you for a wrong answer (deduct marks). He is not an accommodating proff - too strict. Teaching is just not his calling.
This guys is terrible! Trys to make jokes but fails badly.. His class reminds me of a newer edition of Dr. Hos infomercials ever week.. just very bad!
Really annoying, not really someone that you can count on for help, lame jokes, just a really disappointing prof all around
Teaching not his calling ! I have taken more than 120 credits at York , and hands down the most futile professor award goes to him. Never touches a chalk in the entire course, never does a problem in class, reads from the slides, any gibbon can do that. Please try and avoid taking him save your money,
Annoying, poor english, pain in my ass, talked during exams, sent useless emails, on an on
One of the worst Profs. I have ever come across. Spends the entire class reading the textbook from the overhead, has no structure to his lectures, tells some of the lamest jokes, annoys you with the most useless e-mails and most importantly - this guy cannot teach if his life depended on it. Stay away from him and save your money.
horrible
My first time meeting a communist. Poor teaching strategy with no course content. He is not helpfull and not approachable. He is a prime example of York's failure in academic rankings among school in Canada. I highly suggest you dont take his course if your looking to learn and advance in schoolling.
Horrible prof. If you can take this class with another prof do so...horrible marker...you can't even understand what he says half the time..makes stupid comments out of the blue...doesn't answer question no pointing in asking them
He is an ok Prof, but he doesn't like you asking questions he assumes you should know the answer too and his lectures were not really that helpful considering the amount of things you have to learn. If you are used to studying on ur own u should have no problems with this prof
Thaddeus Hwong is a very intersting prof. He is eager to come to class to help you to learn however he does not do the best job at helping you learn. He is concerned more with whats going on in the world and the ideas behind the law then the course content itself. He is a tad arrogant and rude
The thing about this professor, is that you have to know something about the chapter he is about to talk about before coming to class. Only then will you get some of the things he will be saying. I personally liked how he tried to say some more interesting things during class, but he really doesn't help you with questions. You have to be a self lea
He is really bad. Before an exam he will literally talk for 20 minutes about how the course will help you in the future etc. Which should be said in the introduction lecture not right before you write an exam. Also, he is arrogant and does not want to help at all. He expects you to know everything and doesn't care his students. Go with prof Agarwal
Extremely rude and arrogant, cuts you off and doesnt let you speak. Tells useless jokes that no one laughs at, and seems to think if your opinions dont match his that you are a complete idiot. No doubt a very intelligent and learned individual, but just so wrong to be a professor! One class of his was enough to make me want to drop.
He is just the you are.
The best prof I have had in my life.I barely cared about the budget, but this prof makes the material so easy to understand and pushes students to their maximum ability. If you do the work, he will grade you fairly. I never considered an MBA, but Prof Hwong made me realize my true potential, and now I really hope I get into a graduate school. A+ Pro
without a doubt the best professor i have ever had. he makes the class think and keeps us on our toes. warning: his class is not for the people that run away from work. this class requires work but delivers the best learning experience. also the nick names he gives his students are so funny! 10/10
Sends tons of biased and uneccesary emails. The lectures are useless. If you take this course with him, be prepared to do 100% of the teaching of the material to yourself. Tax is hard enough, he makes it harder. Do not take this course with Prof. Agarwal either. You will never see, hear or talk to her the entire term (especially online section!)
High quality prof doesn't mean high education. He discourages students, and looks at everything in a negative way. Same grade with famous Diane Jurkowski. -100 out of 100 (not even 0) F grade prof. Nothing to learn from him. Sending tons of garbage mails. Absolutely useless, horrible
Very hard to understand. He hates when somebody leaves class. He takes stuff too personal. He is vague
Avoid him. Extremely unreasonable person. Impossible to respect him. Mark unfairly. Talk about the importance of education for literally 1 hour. He will interrogate you whenever he doesn't like your answer/attitude.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES!
They should have a rating on here for worse teacher in the world. Very poor social skills and very rude.
As soon as I found out I had this teacher, I dropped the course immediately.very Ignorant teacher.
Very narrow minded and not approachable by any means. Stay away if you can.
Very crazy teacher, will go balistic if someone is late, will not teach and instead will talk about random stuff
total waste of time dont expect anything any single answer from him. you r all on your on if ur stuck with him just study well lecture notes thats your way only to get marks
if you do not agree with this political opinion you will not do well on your paper. agree with him.
The scales are not entirely applicable to this amazing prof. He is strict on deadlines and general conduct (attendance etc.), but if you do the work, and do it well, then you will be rewarded with real a real learning experience. Highly recommended to those people who are attentive and willing to learn. Not for ppl looking for smooth sailing
The class itself isn't too bad, but this guy is a terrible person. He is the course director and basically does everything for the course. Not approachable at all - 1 word answers if you're lucky. The material can be tough at times, just make sure to not fall behind and do and understand all the assigned exercises and you will be fine.
Great prof, learn't a lot in his class - a true learning experience
An excellent prof with great heart for teaching. course materials can be tough and demanding. however, if effort was put in, it can be extremely rewarding. one of the best class i have taken and certainly learns tons from it. those who do not like him are simply students who did not put in hard work and received poor grades.
Worst Proff I've ever had... and I've had a few bad ones! This guys SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO TEACH - what's the point of doing professor evaluations anyway if the school doesn't listen to the students...
Dr. Hwong wants his students truly learn something. We were graded each class on our contribution to discussion (high pressure for shy people). The course was not a lot of work but you had to prepare for every class and follow assignment instructions. You have to agree with him to do well in the class, he's not open to other ideas.
While I understand what he is trying to do, the manner he chooses to do it is very off-putting. If you can put up with him I guess he's fine, but honestly he just bothers the hell out of me.
If you read your lecture notes before his class you will have NO problem getting a great mark. His class is the reason I'm taking more tax as an elective.
You will get out of the course what you put into it. All the assignments are very short but must be completed. His goal is to help to learn something. Other professors could learn from him.
When you enter exam location, if he doesn't recognize your face, he will ask whether you've been going to his class. If you say no, he will ask you why you are skipping his lectures. If you don't provide a reasonable excuse, he will force you to sit next to him during examinations.
Did the work, got rewarded. Hwong did a good job.
Do not ask him questions, you will never be answered directly. Don't expect he will be give a reasonable mark unless you are a professional on taxation policies.
The course itself is NOT hard. You can self yourself a lot if you try to do your own income tax return. Hwong is a disaster! He can’t give you a clear explanation on what you did right and what you did wrong. The only reason for that is to prove to you that he’s smart and you’re stupid.
Extremely unfair marker
For his research project, the administrative aspects are more important than the actual research content. He will cut 5 marks if you do not write the email subject in a way he prescribed. I pay 8 grand a year to learn from people like him. I have no idea how he made it to the sunshine list!
This is a graduate class & his teaching is not graduate level. The course lacks structure, its ambiguous and assignment expectations are not provided. You are ridiculed in class in front of your classmates with offensive and not constructive criticisms. This professor should not be allowed to teach at the Masters level and in fact not at any level.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROF. Does not help you in any way of form. If anything, he tries to fail you rather than help you succeed in his course
Hwong is quite possibly the worst professor I've ever encountered within my four years at York. He focuses on the nitty gritty administrative aspects of an assignment and not the actual material/content. I mean, seriously? Mark deductions for an incorrect email subject line? Simply absurd. Stay FAR away if possible.
He is a horrible, mean and bad professor. His is unwilling to help students.
Horrible prof who is unwilling to help his student. Whatever you do don't take class with this idiot. You can get a good grade by using the textbook. Notes and his class are useless.
A disgrace to the teaching profession. Has a mindset that he is a genius, and that every student is a failure. Will not help you in any way, and will grade term papers with no transparency. Rather than trying to teach you the lesson behind the term project, he tries to "scare" you into following orders. Tax can be hard, but this guy makes it worse!
This prof is very condescending towards his students. When i read the course outline or assignment instructions, it feels like im reading a motivational speech rather than directions on how to do the assignment. He feels the need to share his "negative wisdom" in every sentence he writes. Just study from the textbook and you'll be fine.
Be prepared to work in this class. Put in the effort and you will walk away from this class as an empowered individual. Also, attend all classes. It is worth your while to sit and absorb the inspirational lectures given. But more importantly, the professor is very engaging and will work tirelessly to make difficult concepts understandable.
Took this course online and highly enjoyed Mr. Frankovic's lectures. However my only communication with Mr. Hwong was highly unpleasant. Take my advice and avoid talking to him at all opportunities.
The worst professor in human history. This is the only professor that I want to give him a 0/5. Student cannot avoid this guy since he marks all the paper from all sections. he is not the kind of professor that motivates you or encourage you to improve. All he does is trying to discourage you. The marking is unfair, But Don't get discouraged by him
Terrible and condescending prof. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, you will regret it.
Incredibly rude and demeaning in his course announcements and interactions. He is unhelpful regarding questions and seems to believe sick students are out to lie and cheat and fake their way through exams. It says a lot about York that they keep him employed...
His class was extremely engaging. He is one of two professors that actually cared about me. I was on the wrong path and the professor went above and beyond to help me. I owe my degree, life, & success to him. He's the most remarkable man I've ever met. I'm truly blessed just to have known him. I wish him the very best.
Awful professor. Avoid communication with him as he'll just confuse you. The comments here indicate most students didn't enjoy their experience with him, yet YorkU does nothing and lets him teach as if everything's fine. Deluded to think students will listen to his wisdom when he's so negative.
I dont want to judge him. i didn't receive any respect from this prof. overall it is a tough course, you need to learn most of materials by yourself to pass this course.
An awful professor and an awful person. If you're sick, he won't believe you and will lecture you on being honest and all his irrelevant philosophies. Negative personality, confuses students and it's a shame students are discouraged from pursuing a career in accounting because of poisonous profs like him who live in their own bubble. STAY AWAY.
1) He's the course coordinator but doesn't actually teach. Only in charge of the project and exams. It's so stupid that he runs the course but doesn't have lectures. 2) He doesn't give the project marks. He keeps them to himself. Also doesn't explain what's required for the project 3) Thaddeus. What kind of a name is that?!?! Never heard before.
Worst humankind in the history. Never clear on what his expectations on the project. Project marks never received. No one knows (including the actual instructors) what's expected and how the paper is marked. He thinks he knows everything. I am so surprised to see he still exists at York. I would never ever recommend.
Instructions super long-winded, and no questions allowed. Would expect you to write something intelligent in 100 words. He does provide a detailed explanation for your mark if you ask him via email. Actually I'm pretty impressed by his super careful marking. He once posted a comment from HERE on Moodle. Not sure if that makes a threat.
I walked into first class and within 30 mins I opened my laptop and dropped the class. saved my self from a big headache... at least for now
Due to death situation in the family I had to miss first class, I got a clear message from this instructor clearly stating my failure in the course. He needs to practice what he expects from his students and what he lectures and preaches about respect and empathy. I reported him to the program director, hope that will save others his toxicity.
the worst professor in history and at york.!!! not respect students hard work and always talk not useful thing at class.
This professor prepares you for the real world. Acknowledge that the first semester is spent weeding out students that aren't dedicated to the course/ have a passion for it. The second semester was about open discussions and critical thinking in society. Not a bad teacher, just occasionally awkward in communication! Definitely ask for a reference!
Mr. Hwong's class was one I looked forward to every week. His amazing knowledge of law, funny and relevant anecdotes, and overall good life advice made the course more than worth it. Would definitely recommend this course and prof to anyone interested in the interactions between politics, law, and society
Professor Hwong is a no bull crap kind of prof and if you are a fourth year student and can't stand a professor who expects fourth year level work then don't take his course. Attending seminar is manadatory and you will quickly notice that he expects work from students, but he is a professor who cares about his students, he's a great professor!
Once you get to know him, you will soon realize the man has good intentions. He want's you to think for yourself and defend your position; not one of those do you agree or I disagree where you simply follow what has been said by someone else. A Very interesting class, beneficial skills can be attained if you commit yourself!
Highly recommend taking online, you get weekly recordings of the in-class lectures with the added benefit of getting to pause/go back to the complex topics. Midterm more difficult than the final, as personal tax more complex than corporate (to me). Prof. Hwong is the course director, no way around him and best to avoid any communication.
Have fun having to rewrite your original submission for the second part of your assignment while STILL keeping your argument and reasoning under a 100 word limit. This prof literally made my blood boil with his unbelievable remarks and his word choice to explain things. He clearly feels entitled and has a superiority complex.
One of the worst (if not the worst) profs Ive ever had. Overly convoluted instructions with no questions allowed yet he somehow expects a doctoral dissertation in 100 words. Lecture notes and practice question are also unnecessarily convoluted and a huge pain to work through. The biggest obstacle to succeeding in this course is the course itself.
The lectures, midterms, and final are fine for the most part. The assignment will kill your mark. Doesn't even give a passing grade if you follow every single one of his instructions fully and go above and beyond. I truly have no idea what this guy expects from 100 words. It's clear he couldn't care less about his job or students.
Awful, 1 million times awful. The worst professor you could look for. Very inconsiderate as well.
In my experience, the only students that complain in this prof's class are the ones that don't listen and don't follow his (albeit specific) super easy guidelines. He's obviously left wing, but it's easy to succeed in his class. Just listen, engage with the material semi-thoughtfully, and you'll do well.
Great prof. Just keep your head down and do your work. It will be as good as the effort you put in.
Just an jerk on purpose. No reason to be that rude and mean. Class is fine, it's accounting so its not hard, it's either right or wrong. But prof is just purposefully rude and lazy.
Very hard marker who does not care about students
Just terrible
Honestly, I think Professor Hwong is someone who wears their feelings on the outside. Extremely liberal, is very strict with a specific set of rules. Yet, you will learn everything you need to know for the final capstone project. Attend class, listen well, and ask questions if needed. He does not like repeating himself, so don't make him.
If I could give him a zero I would! AWFUL professor. He does not give rubrics for his assignments but gives page long instructions that are completely non-sensical. What kind of professor expects one to write a research paper in under 100 words? Very bad look on the school, York U should remove him indefinitely. Worst experience.
Maybe I dont like his style of teaching but one of the worst Prof's I have ever had, I attended all lectures, participated but still did not see his reason to make student attend lectures than go through 10-12 links per class and make notes. Assignment guidelines no existent. Made me feel dumb in a policy course because I dont know economics.
He is honestly a great professor and very mindful and considerate if you are willing to put in the work. He wants you to refer to the course outline rather than asking him direct questions. Honestly, he is a pretty to the point professor. He talks a lot but it is pretty interesting. Just carry your load and you are fine.
He is just rude when it comes to participating in class. All other profs choose to be respectful of student contributions but he puts you on the spot and straight-up tells you that you're wrong. Picks on students and keeps calling your name until you talk. Not a typical seminar and no scholarly readings to actually learn the material.
At first Professor Hwong's teaching methods seem unconventional but overtime I was able to see that they worked. Rather than making students spend $$$ on textbooks he refers to real world situations to course content. Didn't love getting called on it class, but it has made me more confident to talk in class now. Assignments were diff than others.
Weeks before class even began, he sent a rude email basically telling you to drop the course, if you miss even ONE class you will get a C or below, and that you will be required to do readings every single day of the week... All this for only 3 credits. I feel bad for any student who has this prof.
He's not a good professor, weeks before class starts he discourages people for taking the course by the emails he sends, "people get a C after missing one class" and tells students to reconsider. He does not help when you email him either, he's super repetitive and even told me to drop this course and get a refund after the first class..
He spends way too much time trying to get to that point, if you email any questions after class, he prefers calling students on their phones. He is extremely unprofessional. He told me that I should "drop the course and that I shouldn't worry about getting a good grade but I should be worried about passing" Unprofessional & unsuitable for the job.
Amazing professor as long as you don't mind being challenged.
