Black Studies 140A and 140B. She is one of the sweetest ladies at Mesa college. She is very passionate in her culture and has a lot of pride. Very easy class, and tests are in groups. 2 tests and 1 project, again a group. Great lady! I admire her!
This teacher is fabalous, i took her class did the bare minimum and got an A. Do the x credit it will help alot. Midterm and final were group test. show up, take notes, and listen to her lectrues and you will pass her class with a B minimum
Show up, you'll get an A, but don't think you won't learn anything. This has to be the best class I've ever taken. She is amazing.
Ms. Mayasa is very passionate about African Studies. Her class, though easy to pass, is definitely one you will retain information from. Lectures are interesting, informative and unlike anything you've experienced before. She is fun, hip, and laid back
this class is the most informational class ever. the tests are open book, note, and classmate. the class is very fun and laid back
Loved this class! Mayasa is so moving! She will change your life. Totally take this class!
She is a cool professor and has very innovative teaching methods
The best instructor you will ever have! She is passionate about the subject matter and passionate about her class. She challenges her students to exercise their intellects and she succeeds every time. You'll easily get an "A" because she'll help you to discover that you are smart enough to earn it.
she is a very gifted teacher i felt it was privelage to be in her class
Very enthusiastic teacher. She wants to make sure her students understand the material. The class is very interesting; I learned a lot! She doesn't ask for much out of you, just pay attention, take notes. Tests are open notes, open book, and you work on it with a group, but still very tricky.
Phenomenal. If you can take this professor, take her, your life will change and you'll learn a lot!
Take her class whenever possible. This professor has so much to say, and she will make you feel powerful, brilliant, and limitless!! People that took her intercession class know what I mean! You guys were awesome.
Mayasa is such a wonderful teacher. I've actually had her for 3 classes the most recent being Speech and she amazes me in every class that I have her. She's such an inspirational and passionate person it makes me wish that she could teach all of my classes.
Awesome! She is very moving, motivating etc. I learned so much in this class, take her for sure!
best teacher and so passionate about what she teaches!
With out a question one of the best teachers I have ever had. If you want to learn about LIFE and History and the way the world is...by all mean PLEASE take her class. You will not be sorry that you did. I will be take any class she teaches and I hope you will join me in her class. She is a great person and she cares about her students. Just do it!
Awesome teacher. She really opens your eyes to how history plays a vital role in today's culture. Very eye-opening class. Recommend it for anyone! Pay attn - She's disorganized - does not always repeat deadlines/assignments so it's easy to get lost. Mid-term & final are done in groups..very chaotic. Stay organized! Great teacher-very helpful

SHE IS THE BEST EVER SHE TAUGHT ME A LOT I BARELY COME 2 CLASS AND I GOT AN A IN THE CLASS THE FINAL IS GROUP PROJECT SHE IS THE *BEST* HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER
She is awesome! She really cares about her students and is willing to help out of you talk to her. You have a midterm and final that are both open note/book and you can work in any size group of your choice. There is 7-10 page research paper and a group presentation but it is not bad at all. She really knows and cares about what she is teaching
SHE'S AMAZING!! WOW! I WAS NEVER SO EXCITED TO GO TO CLASS AT 8am BEFORE! She loves participation and questions. HW is never a issue, as long a you can participate in class. Each day you go to this class you'll learn something new and love it! SHE'S GREAT! JUMBO-HOTEP
She's great!! Makes you think about the issues deeper and classes are really exciting...Exams are open book so that makes it a little easier.Gives a lot o xtra credit, highly recommend!!
THiS WOMAN iS AMAZiNG! SHE iS MOST DEFiNETLY PASSiONATE ABOUT THE SUBJECT, EASY GRADER, BUT ALSO GETS THE CLASS iNVOLVED SO YOU ARE TRULLY UNDERSTANDiNG THE TOPiCS.. EASY A, AND iNSPiRiNG TEACHER/ MENTOR. YOU'LL LOVE iT! JUST DON'T SLACK, PUT FORTH SOME EFFORT, SHE'S A HiGHLY RESPECTABLE TEACHER AND SHE DESERVES THAT MUCH FROM YOU!
Si Jumbo Hotep! Ms Mayasa is an awesome prof. Her 140A class was easy, same I hear about her 140B class. Group tests, multiple questions, T/F. There's one group presentation, plenty of time to do. I learned a lot from this class. I look forward in joining her 140B class next semester.
This instructor is GREAT!!!!!!!!! she explain this subject in a way that keeps you wanting more. This is a very emotional class, but it is well worth it. You will learn so much about the history of America/Black American and how it came about.
My fav. professor by far at Mesa! You will learn so many things that you never knew before. Lets you take test in groups so you are able to interact with each other and share information that you may have not known. The class is also very emotional but a great eye opener.
Shes great.Very passionate and knowledgable. If you put forth effort and turn everything in youl get an A. Warnign u gotta read a novel and there is a 7-10 pg essay, but u get like 3 months to do it. Final and midterm are open note group style. Shes cool and Ill take her again u should too
She is very articulate, interesting and has a commanding presence.
Very, very liberal prof! Will open up your mind to a different view of American History. This class is easy an easy A if you come on time, take good notes and turn in all the assignments. All tests are open-book and group-take style so if you read the chapters throughout the semester and take good notes you should be fine.
Prof. Mayasa is by far the greatest instructor i've had here at Mesa. she is helpful, understanding, and down to earth. Her form of teaching is different than most. She puts her heart into it. She isn't too worried about you turning stuff in and being in class every meeting she just wants you to understand what the class is about and learn the mean
Nice lady and passionate professor. She does count attendance as part of the final grade so you MUST come to and stay for the entire class if you want a good grade. There's a group paper project with oral presentation, a couple of assignments and a final. If you do what supposed to do as a student you will get a decent grade here.
THE BEST
Interesting subject matter. Very enthusiastic towards teaching, informing, and establishing the very essense of the Americas to her students. Read the text required and follow instructions. Group test, 1 midterm essay, and class discussion.
Im a 20yo m con/rep christian. Mayasa: I couldnt tell what her religion was, tends to be liberal/dem and seemed to have socialist econimc views. Class is interesting. Some homework, a midterm(done in groups), a group presentation. Esay A. Some students hardly showed up and got an A. Will engage in depabte with you. Fairly disorganized.140B is same.
The BEST!!! She loves to teach and actually cares about the students. She is such a sweetheart and if u do what u have to do you will be ok.
"a MUST go-through school experience" with this brilliant professor that you'll definitely LOVE. she has a Beautiful Vibe, She is an Elite and Prestige Professor I happen to cross path's with. I sometimes kinda had a crush on her. Very informative about factual info that most college students are deprived of.
She is an amazing teacher! one of the best people I have ever met! The class is very interesting and taught me a lot about the world. MUST TAKE MAYASA! I promise you will love her.
If you go to San Diego Mesa College and you don't take professor Mayasas nor Starla Lewis, you are foolish.Any class of theirs is a class you want to take because it applies to life, reality and how it all connects back to history. There is no way you can't pass the class because that is her goal to make sure you come out knowing something and you wi
Mayasa is a very nice woman, and you'll learn a lot in the class, but be warned: 1) she is ALWAYS late to class (often 15-20 min) 2) collaborative, open book/note exams WON'T decide your grade and 3) there are assignments that will have you spending time in places other than the college. SHOW UP, PARTICIPATE, and DO THE WORK.
crn 49127 blas 140b
Teacher is always late to class (15-20min) but dont leave! Midterm and Final that are HARD even with open book open neighbor but don't decide your grade. Group Project and 4hrs @ horrible museum but go to class and be respectful you will pass!
Beyond wonderful! Fantastic speaker. But being forced into groups with individuals who suck the life out of those who do the work, leaves alot to be desired. Be prepared to be plagiarized by the lazy. But also be prepared for a magnificent factual journey through history-what a teacher!
This is a great class. You will really come out a changed person and have a different perspective of history. Professor Mayasa is great and you will learn a lot. You have to read the chapters but you should do fine.
This Professor can teach! Rarely do you find a teacher more passionate than this one. Her lectures are thought provoking and steeped in knowledge. Don't miss class. This is an easy A if you show up and get involved. The exams are no walk in the park but open note/book/neighbor might get you a B :0)
Professor Mayasa is amazing she is one of the "must have" professors at mesa college. Her and professor lewis are so passionate at what they do. She is very helpful and very knowledgable and she genuinely cares about her students. LOVE HER!!!!
Mrs mayasa is the the best teacher throughout my entire college experince. she loves what she does and is very pasionate about it. i recommend her to everyone!!!!!!! go to class do the work and particiate in coversations. EASY A!!!!!!!!!
She is passionate about what she teaches. Homework for the most part is reading, but she still teaches so everything is understood. This was an easy class.
Professor Mayasa is passionate about what she teaches and is good at it. Attendance might nt be required per say but highly recommended as it makes test easier and puts you in her favor. Read the book and take notes and you should have an A. I took Blas 140A & 140B. Both are great classes and fill a lot of requirements.Highly recommended

This class was an easy A. You can get by without buying the books, just take notes during lectures. we only read about 6 chapters total in all her books and didnt cover much hist. She repeats herself a lot and backtracks constantly. just go to class and you will pass. 2 tests, a group project, minimal work. Great lady, good lectures, easy teacher.
chillest teacher ive had. way cool way laid back show up and make sure she sees your face and can put a name to it and you got an A. mid term and final was open book, open note and group tests
super easy
This woman lectures with authority, by showing us the reality to things in history. In terms of teaching and assignments, she is pretty disorganized (which drives me crazy), but I would recommend her to anyone, she is easy. You'll learn a unique side in U.S. History. She is also very, very, intelligent and compassionate.
This class was awsome. This is the first class especially history that i have ever wanted to show up on time every class. I learned so much understood everything and didnt do much of the work but got high grades on the 2 tests and got a B. We did not do the group project. I am so excited to take 140B this semester with her! I LOVED IT!
If you like a professor who is organized and can tell your grade whenever you ask for it along the semester,do not take this class! The work is easy, but she always gets confused with deadlines and she is so unorganized. You have a midterm and final but its group. Extremely difficult though. This class is stressful.
This class was extremely disorganized. She didn't tell u that u had assignments until the day before. We had to do a ridiculous assignment that was extremely confusing. Its extremely stressful. If she likes you, you will pass easily, if not, your screwed. I think it was so bad they took the class away, lol.
Very disorganized! It's impossible to know what your grade is until the end of the semester, which always keeps me stressed b/c I always want to know what my grade is throughout the semester. She definitely knows her material, and you'll learn a lot about African History and how it correlates in African American History. Class is pretty easy.
She is very disorganized I would not recommend her not take her again. Always talking about random events in class and goes off topic. She talks the entire time and it is very hard to concentrate when she write anything down on the board.
This was probably the best class I've ever taken. She is so enthusiastic about black studies which makes you want to learn more. There were only 2 tests, a midterm and final, and they were both pretty difficult. However you can use notes, textbooks, and people in your group! I would highly recommend taking this class, esp. if you need a GPA boost!
Prof Mayasa was a laid back power driven professor! definitely recommend taking her class. I want to take it for fall instead of the summer. Thanks prof!
She is very disorganized I would not recommend her not take her again. If she likes you, you will pass easily, if not, your screwed. I think it was so bad they took the class away. This is the first class especially history that i have ever not wanted to show up on time every class.
Whenever a student did not understand the question she was asking she would just stare at them and repeat the phrase over and over. As if saying it multiple times might make the student understand. When students told her they needed help or had a question she simply refused to answer.
Mrs. Mayasa really cares about her students. Her teaching style is like no other but she teaches in a way that makes you think critically of the world around us. I actually loved her lecture because you can see how passionate she is. This class is very laid back so if you need a very structured professor dont take this class. Participation matters!
Overall, she's a great professor who is obviously very passionate about what she teaches. The books were "mandatory" but we hardly used them, plus the books are available in the library for free. She wants you to actually learn & not just memorize dates and events. She offers extra credit. Get ready to do group projects
She's so passionate about what she teaches! She goes into detail about everything. When asked a simple "yes or no" question, she goes on and on for a good five minutes. Her lectures are all over the place and messy. Easy grader though and classes aren't boring. She's really down to earth.
All I can say is SHEsTHE BESTT!took her during summer never read, never even got the book, and I passed with an A, I loved her we didn't do much but i learned soo much she is passionate and understanding she so in depth and we have discussions about stuff going out today and keeping you informed, no homework let you focus on the big picture TAKE HER
Mayasa is very passionate about the class, but she came late to class and is very disorganized. You won't know your grade until the end of the semester.
A little disorganized but still the best! Take her
Professor Mayasa initially impressed me with her lectures. After the first few weeks though, her and her lectures became fatigued, and her notes disorganized. The largest issue was that the midterm and the final that my class received had very few questions that had to do with the information she had provided us with throughout the semester.
I could listen to her lecture all day long ! You will gain so much knowledge from any of her classes. You will know the questions that need to be asked when you leave her class. She really fights for her students to be great and She has inspired me in so many ways. Thank you Mayasa for being the amazing professor that you're!
Class is good and she teaches very well, but she is very unorganized. It almost doesn't seem to matter what you do all semester since at the end of the semester she makes you grade yourself and gives you that grade. I did all the homework and studied for the tests and ended up receiving the same grade as someone who didn't do anything. Easy A
Professor Mayasa is such a good lecturer and is super interesting, however, her class lacks structure. She doesn't really update grades that often so you really don't know what your grade is until the end of the semester. Never assigns homework but, you have to participate in the class projects so you can get credit.
She is very disorganized. Very slow with grading. Doesn't even grade if I'm being honest. Lectures can be interesting. The work you do kinda feels like its pointless. She will ask what grade you believe you deserve before the course ends. If you are reasonable with the responses for the grade you deserve, she will give it to you.
Professor Mayasa is a very passionate teacher and a genuinely nice person. However, her lectures and overall class structure are very disorganized. Lots of group projects. You wont know your grade until its posted on e-grades. She would often show up to class 20 mins late, which was frustrating.
This Prof has a lot of important information & you will actually learn a lot if you pay attention to her lectures and attend outside events. All she really wants is for students to build a better understanding of the subject, but the criteria for your grade is REALLY confusing. She is a bit of a scatter brain & doesn't follow through.
Professor Mayasa is truely passionate however she is immensely repetitive during lectures. She is also unorganized and lacks time management skills. Assignments aren't graded throughout the semester. Major grades are comprised of group assignments. The criterion isn't clear either. She means well but is scattered and it shows in her teaching style.
Her knowledge passion and enthusiasm is amazing!
Very disorganized and behind on grading. However, Profesor Mayasa cares a lot about her students and the history of the world. You will leave her course likely knowing more than you've ever learned within K-12 all within one term. She asks what grade you believe you deserve. Some extra credit opportunities. She does yell but with a good meaning!
If you're interested in learning about History than she is a great choice. She's definitely passionate about her job. Although, at times she'll get to talkin and won't stop, all you can do is listen because it's all insightful information.
She's proud of what she teaches and is an amazing person, but she is a little disorganized. I learned a lot in her class and she covers lots of material. A lot of people stopped coming to her class but this class needed participation so you could understand discussions. There is no final or midterm. You self evaluate yourself in the end.
Professor Mayasa is very understanding of everyone's personal home-life situations. She works to create an environment where you can learn easily and with a number of tools. Her classes require group projects for the final but not many exams. Her 140A class is very informational and educational but the 140B class has a very left-wing political bias
She is the slowest grader and is extremely unorganized. I did not know my grade untill the end of the semester.
She was extremely disorganized and you dont have any idea what your grade is untill the end of the semester. I would not take her again becuase it was a stressful mess. She wont respond to your emails, and has no clear outline for assignments.
I wish that she was organized and replied to my emails but it was a mess honestly. The course work was fun, but you dont even know what your grade is even when you ask her. Very unfortunate
Went MIA for pretty much the entire course. Gave us assignments with no way to turn them in and no clear directions on how to do the assignment. Interested in taking a Black History course, she is not the professor for you. The work she gave was more on current events rather than the beginning of African/Black History. Worst professor ever
She required us to get 3 books and we never used them. Had to get in touch with the dean because no one could get ahold of her. Wasted money. Awful professor. If the Professor is dealing with personal problems they should take a leave of absence not give assignments with no way to turn in and never grade anyone. Biggest waste of time ever.
Take her classes! I learned so much on the black perspective in America in such an elegant and understanding way. She is so committed to teaching her students the truth and is understanding of everyone's perspectives. Her class was non-judgmental and a safe space to ask questions and get informed. Everyone was respectful
Very passionate and knowledge about material but completely disorganized and hard to get ahold of. Would disappear for weeks at a time. Assignments unclear. Completely off syllabus. Books were listed as required and very expensive but than she only required 4 chapters be read & posted copies of chps so wait before wasting money. Would not recommend
I'm in the middle of taking this class right now and I am extremely disappointed with it. There is so much to learn, but Professor Mayasa is MIA. I emailed her 3 times because the assignment instructions were unclear and she never responded to any of them. The last time anybody in the class heard from her was about one month ago.
I don't know how good her in person classes are, but her online class is so so disorganized. Some links don't work, and make it impossible to get work done. The issue has been persistent past the deadline. The topics are very interesting, but I'm just so frustrated with the lack of organization that I'm contemplating dropping the class.
MIA for essentially the entire semester. Lots of empty promises to check back in and provide instruction. By the time it was clear what was up, it was too late to drop and we had students who were on the verge of graduation or a transfer and they were stuck. Syllabus looked like it would be a great class. Students deserve an apology frankly.
no tests, just watch videos and answer questions, no textbook usage, she was MIA the entire semester, but it shouldn't be an issue if you did all the assignments that were released.
Professor was totally MIA for entire semester, the instructions for assignments weren't clear, literally no feedback was ever given on anything turned in. A few students in our class did the work of tracking her down and getting answers to questions that the whole class had, otherwise we would have all been completely adrift. It's a shame.
The worst professor I've ever had. Unorganized and confusing assignments. Doesn't respond to emails, even if you're desperate for her help. doesn't grade as the semester goes so you have no idea how you stand within the class. The only things I'll say is if you're ok with not learning anything and just taking to pass, then bare through it. Easy "A"
I don't know what to say, She gave us all the work after thanksgiving break and expected all of it to be done. some assignments were locked the whole semester and had us complete them even after grading was over!! Really confusing, unorganized, and is hard to reach her at times.
If you're expecting a typical Psychology course, you're in for a surprise. The class is very different but can be confusing at times. Professor provides interesting readings, videos and discussion prompts. There are moments where it's unclear what's expected from us, but Professor Mayasa is easily reachable through email or phone.
By the second module, the professor was posting lectures and assignments days late, making the entire semester extremely unorganized. When trying to reach out about videos being taken down or assignments incorrectly graded, she will almost never respond. Would recommend against the class if you value communication or timeliness.
I had a lot of the same issues others had: assignments not posted on time, professor was MIA most of the course.BUT the content of the class was great, the assignments were super easy AND when I reached out to the Professor with a problem, she was so responsive and helpful.Even with problems this term, she more than made it easy for everyone to pass.
horrible communication and instructions were very unclear for many assignments. i hated this class, it was very borign even though I find black studies very interesting. the way it was taught was boring and the questions were very confusing and so so so many assignments
One of the best teachers I've had at Mesa, easy to learn from, isn't harsh of a grader, and you will enjoy the class
Cares about what she teaches. lectures are disorganized. Her excuse is that canvas “doesn't” work. never on for office hours, won't respond to emails. 15m late to class. At least send an announcement so I don't wasting my time. this is just as disrespectful as it is for a student to be late to class. recommend this class with different professor.
Professor barely uses canvas. If the class gets moved to a different location. It is not posted on canvas but on the front door. Ive never had a professor in my many semesters of being at community that didnt reply to emails and didnt use canvas. If she doesnt use canvas at least provide papers on information on the projects and assignments.
Insanely unorganized. Forced to do exam during fall break. No contact for first weeks of the course, suddenly appeared so class content was cut. Then got sick and had canvas issues for weeks so more content was cut. Now on week 6 and my other courses are at week 15. No idea how we will finish lectures/exams with two weeks till semester end. AVOID
I took this class 2 times, same professor bc shes the only one who was online atm, 1st time she was HEAVY on class work, I couldn't catch up. 2nd time she has graded nothing throughout the whole semester, has weird links to do her assignments that don't even work, and she never answers my emails when I ask her about assignments.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! So insanely disorganized, doesn't even know what she's doing. She cares about the subject but structure is horrible. Attendance is not mandatory but if you wanna pass the class then show up because she does not answer emails, use canvas, or is on for her office hours. Take this call with different professor. TRUST!!!
?????I am not sure what is going on with this professor, disappears mid semester for 2 weeks without any notice. super disorgnaized without following any outlines, no one in the class knows what she's been doing, neither of us knows what is going on. horrible class. DO NOT TAKE
Professor lacks professionalism, canceled A LOT of classes, showed up at least 20min late to the classes. We only got to chapter 2 of the book, it's hard to remain focused since she goes on tangents. Purchased an “I AM” book which went unused the whole semester. Professor does show interest in the subject but lacks the proper structure to teach it.
Dr. Mayasa genuinely cares about her students and is passionate about teaching Black Studies. While the class can sometimes feel unorganized, I believe most negative reviews come from students who didn't fully engage in the class. I learned a lot and am glad I took the class. I highly recommend it for those interested in truly learning.
The professor was often disorganized, with late lecture/assignment postings and poor communication. However, the course content was interesting. Using tools like Unstuck ai alongside the textbook helped me stay on track despite the issues.
This professor is extremely disorganized, just like other reviews said. There's way too much reading, many 2-hour long videos, and the discussion posts feel like full essays. It's been two months and nothing has been graded! Save yourself and find a better professor!
Just trust me when I say don't take her class. The semester is more than halfway over and not a single assignment was graded. On top of that, professor doesn't respond to emails at all. Assignments are all over the place as there are too many modules.
I am honestly not sure if I am even getting credit for this class. The professor is very unorganized and sends out a random number of assignments with an essay amount of work required. Months in, and not one assignment has been graded. Exams are sent out at random and late to the post date. Not worth it.
Professor Mayasa was interesting. There aren't many professors like her. She often showed up twenty minutes late to class, and months went by without assignments getting graded. That being said, she was very passionate and cared a lot about her students. I have never had a class end by a professor giving me a hug. If you are patient, she's good.
Same complaints as everyone else. I took this class during 8 week summer semester, it ends next week and she's only graded one assignment. Constantly posts things without due dates and most of the content is hours worth of videos that are so disorganized they don't make sense. Exam was super easy though, open book with no time limit.
Uploaded assignments 5 days away from the end of the semester, she had time to upload them before. Hasn't graded nearly anything and uploads WALLS of text and assignments randomly. In general, the assignments are doable and exam is easy. I just wish she was more organized and on top of things because it's our stress and grade on the line.
Very unorganized class where nothing gets done. We're in the middle of the semester and all that's been graded is a syllabus quiz from the first week. She spends class talking but it's always redundant and she talks in circles. No lectures, assignments or materials posted until she feels like it, then barely gives us a few days to complete.
THIS TEACHER IS VERY UNORGANIZED AND WILL NOT GRADE ANYTHING. SO FAR THE ONLY THING THAT WAS GRADED WAS THE MIDTERM AND THE SYLLABUS QUIZ. TURNING THE SPAN OF A MONTH, NO WORK WAS GIVEN AND WAS VERY LATE TO HER OWN OFFICE HOURS. PLEASE, I URGE YOU TO SAY AWAY.
