Prof is a really nice guy - but he's interested in research, and his ability to actually teach is very low. Language barrier seems to exacerbate this. Typical number of times he answers "I don't know" to student questions in lecture: 10. Coordination with Chem workshops and Labs is practically non-existent. We've talked - he doesn't get it.
cannot teach! expects students to know concepts prior to taking class. heavy accent and speaks low so you cant really hear him to understand anything.
A knowledgeable professor. However... he is so in tune with the nuances of his subject (or removed from the difficulties of students just learning chemistry)that presenting a clear concise strategy for problem solving is a real problem. The man is funny and good humored but read the book if you expect to understand the material from this class.
STOP RELYING ON THE OVERHEADS
he knows his stuff.. but he cannot explain it very well.. His favourite answer to ur questions is "I DONT KNOW". his exams are not hard. u will have to study the book if u wanna pass the class..
This is by far the worst professor I ever had. He does not teach according to the book and his understanding of basic concepts condtradicts the book itself. Save yourself the trouble and drop the course, unless you are planning to self-teach.
I got an A in this course. Lazaridis is a slothful obstacle to your learning. You'll do better to befriend your neighborhood pharmacist and ask her/him to tutor you - this and scouring the book chapter by chapter is your best chance. Excellent professor if you need help with this topic is Glen Kowach.
Please - this guy is a joke. But the joke's on you if you think he's going to help you learn chemistry, or get a decent grade.
Ok,I know if I studied more in his class I would have passed. His tests are not that hard. His only problem is that he cant teach for the Life of him.he doesnt explain anything. He just reads whats on the over heads.lets put it this way if u plan on cutting his class u didnt miss a thing if u have his website
This guy sucks. He favorite words are "I don't know” With as much degrees that he has, you would think is knows his stuff. Don't be fooled by his credentials. I wouldn't recommend him to my enemy. He really sucks. I basically had to self-taught myself, the workshop leader helps but the help should really come from the professor.
He is not quite as bad as some of these reviews. He never answers questions BUT it is very clear what he plans to test on and if you put any effort at all into the class you can get a good grade! I learned a lot, I just taught it to myself!! He is a really nice guy outside of class!
sucks, while in class only reads from his notes.
Lets be fair, the entire class can be taken by printing out the class notes off the internet, studying the book, and doing the homework problems. If you are a self-learner who is fine reading a book and studying old tests then you should be fine. If you absorb through lecture, this is NOT the professor for you. Tests are tough, but predictable.
I agree with the comment previous to mine. Just read his notes and study the text. If you do that, then the exams are as fair as they can be. Also, as far as I have been in the class, he has made efforts to answer questions.
No need to go to his lectures you will not learn anything. It's better off you read the book during lecture time. His exams are pretty simple just review the past exams on his website and you should do fine. Also GO TO WORKSHOP THAT 5 PTS IS NECESSARY!
I got an A in his class. To be frank, this is a good professor. But if you didn't learn any chemistry before, i don't suggest you take his class. I learned chemistry in China for three years so i understand everything he said. He is not a right professor for you if you are a beginner.
No need to go to lecture but read his notes in his website. Than you will be fine.
A) Introduces his own hard problems not cvr'd by textbk 6 days b4 next exam for 45-55% of that graded exam - students then memorize - a prof MUST TEACH this mtrl, B)Lab quizzes are actually physics prob's using a chemistry approach usually harder than the pt-value of the quiz itself, C) Prof is open to questions, D) Don't fall behind for any reason
read the textbook!! the lecture might be confusing sometimes.. also, DO NOT ignore the topics that he teaches the day b4 the exam- usually there is a guaranteed question on that topic on the test. also, try to do ALL the old exams that he posts on his website!! VERY HELPFUL!!
HE'S SMART AND HOT
He is really not as bad as he sounds, yea you have to marry the textbook, lecture notes, and past exams....but the secret in passing his class is to know what your doing. Make sure you review over his past exams on his website but also understand it. If you don't understand a concept...your screwed. And you have to teach the material to yourself
Very nice professor. One of the best in City College teaching Chem 103. Explains but still need the textbook for reference. His old tests are online so it is very easy to study them and get an A. The only problem was the online homework. Not the greatest idea ever. Class average on HW was a 30%.
One of the best chem professors at ccny, but thats not saying much because the other professors are horrible. You gives you loads of resources to study from, including past exams. Study that and you should do well. Lecture is useless.
Don't go to lecture! read the book study the past exams. read slides. you should be good. chemistry is hard so study alot. prof is quite useless except if u see him privately. he's good but not great. and a bit confusing at times
Best thing: He makes is own lectures, meaning he writes everything down and explains it as he goes along, no powerpoints, no tricks, great lecturer but with a slight accent. recommend for Chem103
Good professor. Unfortunately, like most large lectures you don't get a lot of hand holding. Seek him out during office hours and he is helpful.
Does not play tricks. Teaches everything in a methodical way with no strings attached. Not the most creative at explaining things, but very fair and clear. I recommend highly for a pleasant Chem experience. He has a website that tells you everything you need to know and he is very transparent about the grading and what he expects from you.
1st off he is very clear of grade calcs hw etc.I NEVER went to class once&on exam days i wud come 30mins late&STILL finish 30mins early.Jus study all his practice exams he have online. He has like 10!!U tink he is hard? U beter run if you have BIRKE for 10400 then.I got an A and wen i went to chek on the final was surprised he knew my name! TAKE HIM
Awesome professor. I took him fall 2011, and I had a great time. Got an A. I enjoyed my workshop class + classmates. This professor is very approachable and helpful. He wrote rec letters that have helped me win many scholarships, internships and admissions. I also always bump into him at the school's gym. Cool guy. Highly recommended. Prof L>Salame
He doesn't take attendance. His hws are easy. His midterms are easy. One will be hard. The lowest grade is dropped. His final was super hard compared to the standards he set his midterms in. Therefore, the grades do go down drastically if final is bad. His notes are posted on his website. So no need to go to lectures. Overall he is an ok prof.
He refers tp the book a lot. His homeworks are easy. His first mdterm is easy but second and third are harder specially the second one. If you see the average of the class test grade is high in one of the test is higher then most likely the following one will be a very hard one. 'Even if the whole class fails he won't curve.' says the professor.
He is one of the best chemistry professors in CCNY. His exams can be really hard sometimes and he does not curve even if half of the class is failing.
He writes out a lot of the calculations to practice problems in class and posts them up online in case you missed it. He also puts up practice exams online. He puts up the solutions to his exams, and helps you if you go to his office hours (not in class). For what it's worth, the average grade in my class was a 75, which is a C (no curve).
Very good professor. He work out many problems in class to make sure students understand the concept. Unlike many professors, he barely read from power-points. There is no online HW. The HW are from the text book and it can be handwitten. Prof. Lazaridis, give students the opportunity to show their effort. If you do your part, you will be fine.
he asked the class a question to see if we understood what he was teaching. we said we didnt and he continued to teach. enough said. hes not that bad of a prof. hes decent.
Professor Lazaridis is very clear. He writes down good helpful notes and explains the material clearly. He also asks questions to make sure people understand, and solves many problems during the lecture. He's probably one of the best chemistry professors at CCNY.
Amazing! If you attend CCNY, you will beg for professors like these who solve problems with you during lectures. Other professors merely provide a glimpse into the topic without much examples and therefore, there's no point in going to lectures and you study alone.
If you want to pass, make sure you read and read and solve and solve. His practice exams are somewhat similar to his exams, but don't get too confident, There will be questions there you will have no idea how to solve. He is a tough grader, you only have about 6 questions and each are about 15-20 points. No curve!
If you are taking for Chem 104 he is a bad professor. His lectures are boring and not useful. Review session before exams are waste of time. The only learning experience I had was because of my workshop leader, other than that he was bad. He drops lowest but on the second exam he gave a extremely hard exam made class average a 44 please stay away.
Professor Lazaridis writes out notes on a projector, gives some old exams, and solves practice problems in lecture. His tests can be very difficult, usually the 2nd test is hardest. Recognizing the material that he can test you on is crucial to doing well. Studying the textbook concepts/examples and going to lecture is what helped me pass with A-
This professor allows the students' grade to be in their hands. His lectures are what will be tested and all the homework is more specific than what will be graded. Simply, do as many practice exams before each exam and you will be very prepared for the exams. The homework is decent and the lab is fun yet tedious. he writes his notes in real time.
Not much partial credit given on tests. Previous tests available and useful however, there will be things on tests you've NEVER seen before and have no idea how to solve despite hours of studying. Tests are 5-8 questions worth 10-20 points each making it extremely difficult to do well with little partial credit given.
One of the best professors I've ever had in CCNY. He's very organized - he has his own website for the course where you could access the notes from class and see exams from previous years (with the key). He always gives reviews before taking exams. He gives 3 midterms and drops the lowest one. Always available outside class.
Professor Laziridis is all over the place for his exams. He doesn't do great lectures but expects you to be perfect at subject. His exams are extremely hard and he gives questions that you have never seen in ur life. Stay away!
he is the worst chemistry professor at ccny. I have taken chemistry 10300 at a different college and got A but I feel like I will fail this one because his lectures are so poorly done. His exams will blow your mind by the difficulty.
Lectures do not correspond to textbook material, homework problems are 10 times easier than exam questions, only way to have an idea on what the test will be like is taking the previous exams, and even then you're not 100% prepared. I did better on one of his midterms without going to any of the lectures, than on the first one where I attended all
Impossible to study for his exams. Say that we makes the exam form this head. How are we going to study questions from his head. He use to be a good professor but not anymore. Beware!!
Well we're about to take his final rn, so this review might look a little different by tomorrow. For the most part, he was a decent professor who actually reviewed problems in class. Exams were hard af though. Homework questions were harder than the exam questions, so they don't really help w/ exams. Pray for us, for our grades, and our future. RIP
He's definitely not the worst professor at CCNY. He tries his best to teach students and doesn't just read off a powerpoint. If you want to get a good grade in his class then do the work and study! If you studied then his tests wouldn't be so hard. But sometimes his questions are tricky so beware. Other than that, if you want an A, then STUDY!
Worst Professor ever! Idk what is up with the chem dept. at CCNY. They have like 2 good teachers over all but lazaridis is the worse. His exams are terrible. Like there's no way to anticipate what might show up. No way to study so just study everything or don't take him.
Lectures were irrelevant compared to the material on the exams. Assistants grade the exams very harshly, went to office hours to go over my exam and pinpointed 3 mistakes and gained the points back after bringing it to his attention. I'm sure the same applied to many others who didn't get the chance. Not a fair teacher, does the bare minimum.
Does not grade exams himself, if you do decide to take his class for any reason, make sure to go and check every test you take during office hours, his assistants grade exams very harshly and do not give partial credit where it's due. Tests are completely irrelevant to the textbooks', lectures and homework problems. Stay away if you care about GPA.
If only he curved a little so many students who got D would have gotten a C and would not have to retake the course but now they do. He's not a good professor and his assistants grade all the exams very harshly. Please avoid and save your gpa
The test are totally unrelated to the class material or preview exams. Do Not Take Him! He does not consider his students.
This class was torture. I managed to get a good grade cause I find chemistry interesting, but almost all my friends did bad. He makes the class harder then it needs to be and refuses to curve even when everyone fails.I lost many nights of sleep and almost resorted to cheating. It felt like I was at war with this professor the entire semester.
Chem 104 is hard, that's a fact. I had him for 103 & 104 and I got "A"on both. Chemistry takes hard work like going and understanding all of his lectures. Doing hw helped me a lot for exams. studying from the textbook and understanding the concepts helped me in his hard exams. he is a good professor who tests your understanding. Lab also helps alot
Do not trust people here who says he is a good professor and you can get A if you study hard. Most of the time he try to confuse you with his difficult and tricky exams. If you don't mind spending 10 hours everyday and get an A then take him otherwise there are better professors out there.
He's a very bad professor, his teaching skill is awful and lecture is unrelated to textbook material and test. You can't pass trust me you won't please pick someone else
Lazaridis does not care about his students. He is a harsh grader and does not provide proper feedback. When I went to ask questions about my exam, rather than figure out where I am going wrong, he stated "it's quite simple really, I don't see why you're not understanding." If you really put in the work, you can do well in the class, but beware.
I had him for both 103 and 104, and I got A's in both. All exams are short answer, but if you get a question wrong and show related work, he gives least half the points back. I admit some of his wording is tricky, but he posts all his previous exams on his website. Practice ALL of them and there shouldn't be a reason to get lower than an 80.
Very Bad professor stay away awful experience
Honestly wasn't as bad as others make him seem, chemistry 2 isn't an easy course but he does provide a lot of resources so make sure to take advantage of past exams. His lectures are related to the textbook and sometimes goes over practice problems. Understand the concepts and apply them to appropriate problems and you should be fine.
Honestly wasn't as bad as others make him seem, chemistry 2 isn't an easy course but he does provide a lot of resources so make sure to take advantage of past exams. His lectures are related to the textbook and sometimes goes over practice problems. Visit his office hours after exams and you may get points because his TAs grade them.
Amazing lectures, clear material, cares about your understanding. Do your work and you'll get an A+. One of the best professors I've ever head, really made me want to learn!
I still hate this for giving me a D 3 semesters ago he is the worst professor ever
Professor Lazaridis is a great teacher. I can tell he prepares his lectures ahead of time and makes good use of it. Good at explaining, very professional. You wont pass without reading the textbook from back to front. Chem is hard and you are not doing well unless you commit yourself to doing practice sets. You have to study hard. Great Teacher!!!!
He doen't really care at all about you. Just goes on with what he has to say. You can't do that with chemistry, its a hard class. Take another professor.
WORST Chem teacher. There are better teachers that you can choose. Is not specific and will not answer your questions.
Lectures - Average, he does practice problems for the exam Homework- ALEKS system, has a lot of problems for practice and knowledge checks No quizzes. No Extra Credit. No Curve. No makeups. For me, he was the worst professor I ever took. Simply because he does not care about his students at all. This is a 9-5 job and nothing more. Avoid.
He does not mark the exam papers, his TAs does and they mark based on the answers he gives to them. NOT EVEN a point for some correct steps!. Aleks was the worst!!! Recitation was only worksheets. Do not even look on his past exams and expect anything similar. If you are weak in chemistry, you better hire a tutor, because the class wont help you!
You spend so much time on ALEKS homework, that you don't have anytime to study for this class, considering that students have other classes. Homework should solidify concepts, however, that Aleks system uses different methods than he uses to solve questions. Delay taking chemistry until other professors are available for another semester.
Not a bad professor. Didn't think I would like him at first, but he changed my mind. Some students are just too lazy and want to blame him for it. Lectures are based off the top of his head but still taught well. Will wait or go back for students as they take notes. Homework is on ALEKS. Tests can be challenging but not too hard.
The reviews here don't do him justice. He's a great lecturer and I thought he was clear when he taught. He was always willing to answer questions during lecture and to go over problems. He gives you his past exams with answers. He posts his lecture notes on blackboard. Midterms were fair. I'd recommend him.
Very benevolent professor. You get what you put in. One of the challenging courses here for sure.
He's a good lecturer, you'll learn if you pay attention. He makes his own tests, so don't base studying just off of past tests. ALEKs comes in clutch at the end of the semester with the grade boost if ur failing, so does lab and recitation. But you NEED to study, his class is dum hard for no reason. Plays with ur GPA here, STUDY HARD.
Professor Lazaridis was one of the most understanding professors I've had. He would generously give back points on your test if he felt the grading by the TA was harsh, extend homework deadlines, give us all his past exams and answers which were very similar to his exams and he added 2.4 points to everyones final grade he was amazing.
Not an easy class nor an easy professor but with the right TA you should be fine. Dont think that this class is like 103 where you could easily pass so get ready to put in the work. His tests are harder than average but everything is doable if you put your mind into it. He gives back points in case of any mistakes. Overall not as bad as expected.
Lazaridis tests are challenging and very conceptual. His lectures are helpful and he provides resources for you to do well. HOMEWORK, LAB and RECITATION will saveeee your grade. Do practice tests and go to the CCAPP tutoring for extra help if you need. You will not get a good grade unless you put in the work and effort.
This is a hard class. Understandable there are things that could be done better. But I had a family emergency and missed an exam and a lab. I had a valid reason but was not granted a make-up even though the Chemistry Department was ready to pardon the missed lab, it was up to Prof Lazaradis and he said NO. This was a waste of money and time.
tbh this is not the professor you are looking for an easy pass.
He's not the best but not the worst either. I took his online class and the homework and exams are on ALEKS. Im gonna warn you, it is the WORST website and might be the reason for your downfall. The professor, however gives many extensions on HWs and exams if you ask him nicely. He's chill but ALEKS was a nightmare, so many all-nighters for that
He is horrible and disrespectful. He doesn't answer emails and thinks he's always right. He failed people who's pie grade was under 60% even though it is only 5% of the grade. This was never brought up on the syllabus but he decided to make it mandatory a week before class ends.
I loved this class for my grade of D. Not fault of teacher, its all my own fault. I cant study. But I will not come to this forum to post my tears, complaints, or bitterness. Everyone wants everything given, I want a million bucks before I am 30 but I know I gonna have to work for it, not cry for it. Post anything here its a junk place anyway...
I could not understand any of the material or content this professor was giving to us students. Even most of the students were lost and didn't bother to ask for help. This was because he is unapproachable and does not show mercy for anyone when it comes to their grades. Do yourself a favor and do not take this professor for any class.
The professor gave past questions from which you could study and the questions were similar (but not the same questions). You have to work hard to learn the topics and Aleks is really useful if you want to learn. Overall the exams were moderately difficult but very much doable and the professor even dropped the lowest of the three exams.
tbh just go with any other professor other than him. My biggest regret was picking his class over Simms. They're both garbage but you have a higher chance of getting a better grade in Simms class
Honestly, I would study the textbook for this class because his exam problems are nothing like ALEKS and that's what most students end up studying. I attended lecture and would go through the textbooks once before an exam and go an A in the class. Do labs & ALEKS, so many students don't then complain (he gave a lot of extensions for ALEKS too).
Worst Professor ever! Hope his children get same karma as we got in his class!!
His class is so difficult to pass but the only good thing he does is that he curves at the end.
Ig professor isn't that decent but nobody talks about recitation and lab Ta's. Lab ta took off points even if you get it right and recitation ta says he will not take off points for one or two days of absence but at the end he took off points for both class participation and attendance and even if u miss a single recitation, hell take off points.
For an intro level gen chem class. it did not have to be that hard. The exams were like 6 short response questions, and the class average was like a 40 for every exam. Recitation also felt worthless. His lectures were okay, but did not give a good sign about the intensity of exams. must study HARD
Take literally anyone else you can. He gives you practice exams but they are not similar AT ALL to his test. He test you on random subjects from chem 103. He does not curve questions literally everyone got wrong. The only upside was that he gave a 4 point curve at the end but most the people had to drop the course or fail.
He is not helpful at all. I went to office hours for help, he said drop the class. He gave past exams, but his exam was very different from the previous exams. Not helpful, and very discouraging. Take another professor if you, he ruined gpa for a lot of 4.0 students.
His exam was tricky but doable as he posts previous exams so try to practice them carefully as it will be on your exam and study textbook and his slides. Then you can get an A otherwise don't expect it. He curved 4 points at the end of the semester.
Just study his lecture for a easy pass!!
This professor just gives no hope to his students and leaves them helpless. I regret taking this class with this professor. If you want to save your GPA, don't take this class!!!!!!
Loved his lectures, was very good at it. He wouldn't just read through slides was actively solving questions and teaching. The quiz were difficult however if you were almost right, and argue with him he would give you the points. And the finals saved me, got 94 on it. Do the homeworks and labs it counts alot in the total, thats where I messed up.
