Dr. Chronis is one of the best instructors I've ever had in any department. He has a true passion for what he teaches, and it will rub off on you. His explanations are crystal clear, and he will back up and explain anything if you need it. Talks with an accent, but it is not thick. Study and participate in discussion, and you'll enjoy the class.
Awesome teacher. Respectful to his students. Badass from Greece. That's all you need to know.
A great professor with a unique lecture style. It can be a good or bad thing, but for me it really made physics "click." If you've ever struggled with traditional physics classes, Professor Chronis is for you. He will make sure you understand by focusing on simplicity and repeated themes that connects all the course materials.
Do NOT take Honor's physics. On the first test, the average was a 42. Rather than assume he made it too hard, he figured that a class full of honors students were lazy and didn't study. I'll give him a little credit, he has improved over the semester, but I still would not risk it.
Do not take his class for Honors Physics II. Single worst decision of my life. Taught only theory and so in depth that you couldn't understand it and it had no place in a 100 level physics course. Average on the first test was a 42%. Blamed us honors students for being lazy. When you ask for help he confuses you more. Homework was really difficult.
I have no idea what the guys before me say. Chronis is fair. He did what he said he would. All exams came from homework. The reason we screwed up is because we consider that a physics class in electromagnetism would be a walk in a park. This is not true. He is a very inspiring professor. His class is indeed hard but if you WANT to learn TOU WILL
I ageee with the last guy. Chronis class in the honors is hard but he is the best instructor I ever had, passionate and engaging. If you want to get an do not take his class. If you want to learn take it!!!!
Pretty passionate guy concerned if students actually learn He makes me want to switch majors LOL
The homework is so hard; it takes hours to complete and is nothing like the lectures.
Awesome prof sometimes gets too deep into a subject but he is captivating. Homework a bit tough but he gives the solutions for study. 5ake this course if youre into physics if not dont
He doesn't like teaching the standard way and it makes the course way more confusing than it actually needs to be.
Finally something interesting in UAH curriculum awesome prof
Dr. Chronis has a weird teaching style. I describe it as, "in your face." He makes sure you understand to the best of his ability. As long as you do your work and try in his class, he will like you. If you don't... well, I've heard some stuff as to how he is. It ain't pretty. But overall, very great professor, can't wait to have him again.
Dr. Chronis has a passion for Physics that you don't find very often in a professor. He's Greek, and English isn't his first language, so his problems are sometimes difficult to understand because of his wording. However, he works hard to make sure his student's understand the material. Make good use of office hours and you'll be fine!
The homework is much more difficult than the problems on exams. Attendance is not mandatory, but there are in class quizzes that give you a lot of extra credit.
Chronis ruined the physics labs.
Labs 115 are now more difficult but I learned things. I saw resistors and capacitors for the first time. The lab manuals are lengthy but they contain many things that the books do not. They are helpful if you want to learn. They are difficult if all you want is to breeze through
Dr. Chronis is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable in physics. However, he is easily the worst person to be teaching an introductory level class. If you already have some physics knowledge- he's great to for furthering that knowledge If you don't already have some physics knowledge- be prepared to never know what is going on
Chronis has a teaching style that's very 'in your face'. Think interactive Khan Academy. He works a ton of problems in class, sometimes for clicker points that can do wonky things to your final course grade (good things). Attendance isn't mandatory but he doesn't tell you when there will be clicker questions for bonus points.
Chronis writes the lab reports that students must complete alongside their physics course, and between his horrible English skills (he is very unclear) and his extremely difficult to answer lab questions (such as asking things we hadn't gone over in class), understanding the report material is near impossible, unless you really know physics.
I dunno what lazies are saying, Chronis is the best teacher I have had for many years, and thats that
A really good teacher for Physics 1. Attendance is not mandatory in which he does not do clickers everyday and he tries to teach a bit ahead so that we have two class periods to do review before a test rather than learn new material. His teaching style is different and makes the class more interesting. Bonus clicker points help your grade a ton.
He is a good professor if you have preliminary experience in Physics. Not so much if you have never taken it before. Jumps from 10mph to warp speed very quickly. Doesn't use the text book. The only things we could study were the sample exams, homework, and lecture videos. Hard to find good help outside of class unless you go to him directly.
He's an amazing lecturer. The lectures can get confusing, so do NOT be afraid to ask questions! When he asks "are you getting me guys?" it is not a threat. He seriously cares about what his students learn and prepares you well for the tests/exams. Also, GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!! Chronis will respect you a lot more if you do.
Chronis is one of the best professors in UAH. If you want to learn physics take his courses. If physics is another course to you do NOT. He wants to see students participating. If you are asleep, he will wake you LOL
He's a good teacher, but as the writer of the labs, he is very difficult to understand. The person who wrote the downvoted review was right- it's not attacking him, just true. For as much as you have to know for the quizzes & how harshly they're graded, those lab papers are just insufficient. I have high verbal and quant skills, & I'm not lazy.
Chronis is a great lecturer, but the co-req labs are much more difficult than the lectures. It would also be really nice if there was something to study before the exams as the text book is not used. Clicker questions are used to assess attendance, and provide pop quizzes. So while attendance is not mandatory it can help your grade a lot.
Chronis is not the best at lecturing to be honest, but I still really enjoy his class. It's one of the few I honestly look forward to. He's pretty fun and loves physics and tells us about physics history stuff we wouldn't know otherwise. Tough class but despite that I enjoyed it.
I had the displeasure of taking this man for both Physics 1 and 2. I passed both classes without too many problems, however, I learned nothing. He lectures about theory when the test are problem based. You will learn little to no physics if you take him. There is a huge scale on the test, but this is given for any physics prof. you take.
Chronis is by far the best prof I ever had. He teaches concepts which not many teach
Awesome dude. Good teach hard course
I can't stand mediocre students who barely got through the 115 lab to nag. You do the work, you learn, you get good grades. As simple as that. I put in the hours. Yes, it is tough ut rewarding too, if someone is interested in learning. If not, welcome to your nightmare
Solid prof goes deep into concepts Would take again if teaches 113 If you want to learn physics enroll in his classes. If you just wanna pass the course avoid him
Had prof for 2 semesters. Average physics prof personality, if you know what I mean. Look it up. I wanted to learn physics. He said if you did, you'd get an A. But he also overcomplicated things to the point that I couldn't even learn anything. The grade is high since there's a TON of partial credit on the tests. *TESTS WEIGH TOO MUCH (90%)*
He's a good professor if you take the regular sections of his class. Do not take the honors version of his class. He expects way too much of his honors classes even though most of the people in the honors classes are having to learn most of the concepts for the first time like the regular sections. He makes the honors tests significantly harder.
I have not had Dr. Chronis as an actual lecturer, but he is the professor who runs the physics labs. This semester in physics lab has been horrendous. The final for this class was extremely hard and had nothing to do with the material learned. Right after the final was due, he made it worth more than what the syllabus said, which ruined grades.
wake up people - final was the same as the quizzes. was NOT hard at all. You just need to take things a BIT more seriously. Enjoyed the lab too!
His class is very difficult. He cares a lot about the subject though so if you're willing to put the effort into learning it, you will be rewarded. He wants you to not take very many notes, but just listen and take in the material he lectures, then to go back and take notes after. Not a bad idea since his lectures move very fast and are info heavy.
Dr. Chronis is enthusiastic and loves what he teaches. He is genuinely invested in the well being of his students. If you don't practice you will fail. His tests are extremely difficult and if you struggle with calculus and DiffEQ you will struggle. But show up to class and there is SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT that if you try you are likely to make it.
Chronis is one of the best professors at UAH. Everyone knows his name, and for good reason. Truly inspirational. While English is not his first language, he is fully fluent in it and there are no language issues. Word of advice: Don't cheat. Last semester, several students were collaborating on a test and he found out and dropped them all.
I'll start by saying if you don't like Physics or don't care about it, don't take Dr. Chronis. He teaches with high regard to concepts and derivations rather than simply plugging into equations. He is a very kind and caring professor, but takes his job very seriously, so I would recommend him to those looking for a real challenge, not an "easy A".
Excellent Physics professor. He makes sure you fully understand the material before moving on, and is extremely helpful during office hours. Exams can be tough but are reflective of what was taught.
He was fantastic. Very kind and helpful if you have questions. Goes very in depth and is clearly very passionate about what he teaches. :)
Just terrible.
I had the class with him and Strong. The lectures, homework, and exams were all nothing alike. The homework was way harder than the lectures, and the lectures were way harder than the homework. They are one of the only options, so work hard. Do not expect a high grade.
I had the privilege of having Chronis as my instructor. He will make you work hard but he is fair and an amazing lecturer. If you don't want to learn Physics stay clear of him, otherwise enroll in all his classes
Terrible. Man only listens to himself.
Honestly one of the worst classes Ive taken in my time so far at UAH. The professor is rude to students and the lectures are dumb because they dont help you with the homework or tests at all. You may learn a few things in the lecture but doesnt help with problems given. The final was terrible as no study guide and no scale when average was 48%
Very unprofessional. Lacking in empathy and understanding and overall care for students' education. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Professor is terrible. Doesnt care about the students or grades one bit. Terrible job of presenting course material to the students and blamed the students for not teaching themselves. Homework is extremely difficult and almost every problem you gotta look online to understand how to work them. Extremely stressful class. No chance of getting an A.
Do not take Physics here.
Throughout the semester, your assignments are posted on an extremely unintuitive program, and each assignment takes 4-5 hours with no outside help or instruction. Lectures are completely unrelated to the assignments, and the final exam is completely unrelated to the assignments. Asking questions would result in a short, snarky, and vague reply.
Sorry to future students who have to take him. Unless you are Albert Einstein you have no change of getting an A. Lectures cover easy problems while the excessive homework features extremely difficult problems that Dr. Strong often cannot immediately solve herself. Professor blames students for entire class performing poorly.
Overall, a very hard class, especially if you have never taken Physics before. He teaches like everyone has had Physics before, so don't be afraid to ask questions, even if he is intimidating he wants you to learn. A lot of people were upset because of the final, but half the class didn't attend. Many problems overlap, so pay attention.
The final exam was terrible but no one attended the lectures and he gave us a fair warning. Nice lectures thought I learned some physics
The homework was more difficult than the material covered in lectures. I had to search YouTube videos because so many of the concepts were not covered in the lectures. Very time-consuming homework. He told us in class that he was lazy, proved through the textbook generated homework and exams with no partial credit.
Chronis is a good professor who really wants students to learn the concepts behind physics so they are able to solve new problems in their careers. In lectures, he will frequently make sure the entire class understands the current topic before moving forward. Don't do the homework just for the grade, but to reinforce the concepts learned in class.
With the online format, this class expects you to be a supercomputer that can devote 20+ hours a week of dedication just to keep a B in the class. The lectures and homework were completely different from one another which made the class extremely difficult to learn anything. Do not take this class if you don't have to.
Incredibly unprofessional (and not in the "good, fun professor" way). Blames you for having questions instead of answering them or helping you. 20-30 hours per week of homework. Puts in no effort to help students.
TAs do all the guiding/grading. Chronis is a good lecturer, but his manuals are disconnected from the current PH111. We worked with material that we didn't cover in 111 until a week after the report's due date. To do well, you need to put in 20+ hours a week, DON'T PROCRASTINATE AT ALL! DO DETAILED REPORTS! This is a weed-out course, DO YOUR BEST!
He is by far the worst physics teacher on the earth. He does not teach at all and you have to teach yourself everything. Do not waste your time trying to reach out to him for help. The grading is really hard. Good luck if you have to take him.
Awesome prof, hard one though
Lab manuals poorly explain experiment procedures, forcing you to attend make-up days to complete most lab reports. Manuals are also poorly written, containing major grammatical errors and poor wording for proofs. The lab does not have enough materials for every group. Content in manuals do not sync with Strong's class. Do not take physics at UAH.
He didn't care about the students. He didn't teach at all. One of the worst professor at UAH physics. No help for homework. Lectures don't help to do a single problem in exam. He didn't know to solve problems. Other teacher in parallel class can't solve those too. I bought Chegg to do homework. No response to emails/hard to reach. Don't take him.
He gave me a zero on a test for accessing the homework even though: 1.) Such rule was not stated in the syllabus. 2.) Test was open book and the homework assignment was in the online book. 3.) Test was open notes and my homework answers were in my notes. He noticed it was his issue, and changed the homework to being locked while the test was open.
He doesn't even teach the lab, the underpaid TA does all of the work. For the love of God don't take him for PH 111. Completely unreachable. Unhelpful. Rude. The worst teacher I've ever had, and he didn't even show up to the lab meetings.
He is the most unreachable professor and is extremely rude. He will actually yell at you if you have trouble with a concept. His labs are actually impossible and dont make any sense. I have been spending 18+ hours a week on the labs and making F's on them for a ONE CREDIT CLASS. Do not take him if you don't have to.
Very difficult to understand from lectures, while his love for physics is prevalent, that won't help you when you take the tests so get ready to teach yourself a lot of the stuff or spend the money to get chegg to teach you.
Dr. chronic was one of the worst experiences in my career as a student thus far. He is a very terrible teacher. Lectures vaguely discuss physics, entirely different from the actual final exam. No response to emails. This is literally the worst physics class ever. Avoid at all costs.
I was told to take Chronis if I wanted to learn and not just pass. While this is true, you must work really hard to do good. His lectures are extremely intuitive and his examples are good for the most part. He creates the exams so you should really understand how to do the examples from the lecture. I was on track to get an A but COVID came and...
Terrible class. He assumes we know more than we do for PH 111 class. He skipped many parts in the textbook, and he didn't know how to teach an undergraduate course. Avoid at all costsone of the worst classes I had taken at uah.
This man cannot teach PH111. From what I have seen, he has somehow managed to attain the empathy and pedagogical nature of a sea sponge. It is like he intentionally hopes to confuse his students with both his practice problems and his teaching style. The worst part is that he knows what he's talking about but explains it like a 7-year-old.
This class is terrible, and this person can't teach PH 111. He threatens that he will fail 80-90% of the course. He is the worst person that I encountered in my academic experience. UAH physics should consider giving PH 111 to another professor, and I do not recommend taking him. He mistreated students and doesn't have any kindness and patience
I think the lab manual is one of the most confusing things I have ever read. All of them are so long and convoluted. Instructions are not clear, and material needed is not covered in class until weeks later. It also takes forever to grade, but that has more to do with your TA. At least you don't need to buy a textbook.
I don't know so much grief....the guy is one of the best professors I ever had in Calhoun and UAH. He is passionate, and sometimes expects the same form his students
I have Chronis this semester and yes do expect to study hard but hey, you want a diploma right? The guy knows his stuff. He expects his students to participate and not ignore physics. If you want an easy A with no challenge steer clear, otherwise by all means enroll in his classes, you will learn a lot
honestly I have not seen a prof like Chronis before. The man becomes so passionate that his lectures feel like shows. I thought I hated physics till I got to his class lol
Chronis is not teaching the labs but he is the supervisor and author of the lab manuals. They are pretty long but they go in depth. wish I had that in high school. Pretty cool experiments too. get ready to study though :-)
Chronis is unmatched. Not only he is extremely knowledgeable but he cares about his students learning. he can be a little "in your face" sometimes, but he is genuine...
Worst professor I've ever taken. Most of the class did fine on his tests because they were formatted exactly like the homework, but he always changed the final to be theoretical questions, and most of us failed. He blamed us for failing the test and accused us of cheating when in reality, he just failed as a professor. This occurs every year too.
Well to be honest you cannot like chronis if you are a bit slow, you know where…fun prof, takes his job very seriously
Great prof, one of the best I ever had. He doesn’t tolerate indifference so be aware …
Awful. Lab manuals are poorly written. Instructions are not clear. I spend 24+ hour per week on labs. Grading was very harsh. No study guide for final exam. Don't take this class if you don't have to.
He generally should find another job, teaching isn't for him sadly.
While his teaching style isn't for everyone, he is very passionate about physics. He has very high expectations of his students, especially those going into Physics and Engineering fields. He is an intimidating individual, but he truly cares. Additionally, this is a weed-out course, so be prepared to study and learn the material. Would take again!
I have no clue what was going on and it was apparent that most of my classmates also had no idea what was going on. Chronis created the mandatory dusk till dawn, which he got immediate flak from both the faculty and students, to which he had to play it off as a joke. I'm sure he's passionate about physics, maybe not teaching.
Unfortunately, the quality of the PH115 lab was significantly worse than that of his PH114. The material is easier to understand; however, the lab was hardly ever stocked for the extra credits (so you won't be able to perform about 80% of them). Chronis' lab manuals/instructions are still rather vague, which made experiments harder to understand.
Chronis may be the Greek god of physics.? lol. But he can't teach for beans. Poor teaching skills. The whole class was failing and he acts likes it's our fault. He'll make you feel dumb for asking a question. You have think twice before take his class also if you care your GPA dont take him!!
Terrible teacher. If I could go back in time and stop anything from happening that has ever happened, the first thing on my list would be to prevent this man from becoming a teacher. I do not recommend anyone not even my worse enemy to take any course taught by him, you will end up wanting to disappear from earth and this is not an exaggeration.
Chronos is the Greek god of time, but Chronis is the Greek god of physics. Dr. Chronis is unlike any professor I've ever had before. He has complete mastery over his subject and expects a lot from his students. At the beginning of the semester I struggled, but once I got used to his unconventional teaching style I was able to do well.
I have no idea what the person ahead of me is talking about. Literally the worst professor I have ever taken. He is a horrible teacher. I went to most classes and learned little to nothing. Lectures, homework, exams, and final exam are all barely related. He blamed us for failing the tests. Take it elsewhere or with someone else.
UAH physics dep should hire someone to reorganize labs and rewrite the manuals. All labs are awful, poorly written manuals and very confusing, and the lab does not have enough materials for every group. Didn't receive graded reports ontime. Grading is not consistent. Spent 24+ hours a week on the labs and making F's on them for ONE credit course.
Although Chronis does not teach the PH 114, he does write the manuals, which are confusing to read and usually off pace with what we learn in the lectures. Also, the class requires 8-10 hours of work a week, which is way too much. This, along with the difficulty of the lab final, made the lab harder than the lecture for me, which is already hard.
I never struggled in a class like this before. He does not listen to the concerns of students. Who lets him teach? HORRIBLE professor, who doesn't know how to teach physics intro class. His exams are impossible. Lectures and exams did NOT correlate! I would not suggest him to the worst enemy.
I regret taking this class with Chronis. I am not sure how he still teaches when more than half the class fails every year. He is very rude with feedback and when you ask for advice, its the equivalent of a shrug. Very aggressive guy. Drop him to save yourself stress and a headache. Pick a professor that clearly cares about your learning and grade.
Awful. Horrific. A nightmare. This is honestly the worst class that I have ever taken in my life, and this man is literally the worst professor I have ever come into contact with. You will be teaching everything to yourself. I DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING THIS TEACHER. Save physics for another semester with another teacher.
This is probably the worst class I have taken at UAH. He is not good at lecturing. The concepts barely get across and the only way to understand what is going on is to look up the answers to the homework online. The final was nothing like the rest of the class and the average score for the final in the honors class was 65%.
Professor created an environment where students felt dumb to ask questions. He refers to difficult concepts that most students have never seen before and might be challenging with sentences like "This is really easy"
Chronis is not a good teacher. His lectures are hard to follow, the final exam is very different from the homework and tests he gives, he berates students that ask questions, and there is the whole dust to dawn debacle from this past semester. Overall I would recommend everyone avoid taking his class.
By far one of the worst professors at UAH. He can't teach Physics. Very rude. Lectures and Lab manuals are very confusing-very disorganized canvas. Anything that has Chronis attached to it you should avoid. PLEASE do NOT take a course with this professor. He makes everything more difficult to understand and is not a suitable teacher for any course.
UAH has a serious problem in Physics and Math departments when it comes to teachers. Chronis is a terrible teacher. I had him for physics 1 and 2 because he was the only option. He is useless as a teacher; most don't bother attending class. He couldn't teach 1st graders their ABC's. If at all possible, try and fit Dr. Strong into your schedule.
Chronis is the worst I have ever taken. Unfortunately, he is the only professor who teaches this course, so it was impossible to avoid him. Final was nothing like the homework and did not correlate with his lectures. He is very unprofessional. He thinks very highly of himself and speaks down to students. So, if you take PH 111H, good luck.
This is a very poorly structured course. The labs themselves are very confusing and the instruction in the lab manuals is not clear. Everything is ridiculously hard, and not even the TA completely understands the material. Save yourself the headache; take this class elsewhere.
With the ego of a supervillain and a tendency to monologue regarding "the wonders of the Greek language", Chronis' lectures are almost entirely devoid of qualitative physics work. Need to know what something is? Here's five different terms for the same thing, probably with an additional Greek lesson thrown in, with only vague conceptual "examples".
I cannot describe how many people regret taking classes with Chronis. This man is the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. He simply cannot teach physics. Regularly berates and insults students to the point that no one asks questions. If you don't want your GPA to get destroyed, DO NOT take this class. would not suggest him to worst enemy.
I created an account on here for the sole purpose of giving this man the worst rating possible if that tells you anything
The worst professor I have ever met at UAH. He does not care if you learn the material & is rude during class. If you suck at physics and don't like feeling like an idiot when you ask for help, take literally anyone else in the physics department.
Overall he does teach well, but there were multiple times throughout the semester that he did things that made the class very anxious. Don't let him worry you. No matter what he says, he will not directly screw with peoples grades because you didn't do well on the pop quiz. (And if he does, tell the dean)
There was a review session that Dr. Chronis hosted where he asked us to solve a challenging problem covering rotational kinetic energy. As we were writing down our answers, he commented that this particular problem had come from a physics textbook he had read as a 10-year old boy in Greece. I thought he was full of it, but maybe he is a prodigy.
great dude overall, but I would suggest taking this class somewhere else. He is not clear in his lectures and expects everyone to understand at a graduate level, because obviously everyone can?? He expects a fundamental understanding of every single concept as if you had learned it like the alphabet. This is the worst class I have ever taken.
I had him for both Physics 1 and Physics 2. Definitely the worst professor I have had at UAH. The majority of the class is graded based on the homework and tests from the book questions which are entirely different from his lecturing. Then, the final is based on questions he creates, which are different from both.
Excellent professor at UAH. You will learn a lot and you will need to work hard. Dr. Chronis does not tolerate lazy students but if he sees you putting in the work then you will get a good grade at the end!
Entertaining as a lecturer, but you are expected to retain everything and already have a base understanding. He'd be great if you already knew the material. The tests are just like the homeworks, but the final is an abomination of his own creation. I love him as a person but fear him as a controller of my GPA.
Dr. Chronis is a difficult professor, but he is passionate about the material and he wants you to learn. If you don't try, you won't get a good grade. Chronis is truly an educator and he only wants competent students to proceed, which is why people consider him a "weed out" professor. He's a great guy to talk to and is accessible outside of class!
I have never felt compelled to write such a strongly negative review. I had Chronis for PH 111 and PH 112 and both classes brought my entire GPA down. He is rude, aggressive, and inaccessible outside of class. No response to emails. Avoid him at all costs; all these negative reviews do not lie. Quite literally the worst professor I ever had.
Lab manuals are the worst scientific document I have ever read in all four years I have taken labs at UAH. Phrasing of the instructions is condescending, and those have copious typos, including some that make answering graded questions impossible. TA was not approachable when we had questions. If we asked something, all he said was "i don't know".
Terrible professor. Run. Homework, exams, lectures and the final are all structured differently. In class he often berates students. If you need more information, ask any UAH student, and 99% of them will agree he is terrible.
Absolutely terrible! Very ashamed that UAH allows this man to teach and terrorize so many students every year. I don't know how he can look at himself in the mirror and claim he is a "teacher."
Avoid taking at all costs. Run. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Ask any UAH student. It's TERRIBLE
A horrific, complete, utter nightmare. My mental health tanked after taking Chronis, because he would constantly berate and belittle students. Run as far and as fast as you can away from him.
The worst professor I've ever had. He ruined my life in a single semester, and he is sure to ruin yours if you take him. The examples he gives in class barely scratch the surface of the ludicrous problems he presents on the tests. I view physics with renewed hatred because of him. Don't take him.
I encourage anyone whos degree requires physics credit to take this class ELSEWHERE. I made a mistake in not doing this. Lectures hard to follow, very math heavy, not at all conceptual. If you didnt take AP Phys. in HS, you will be lost. He is rude and condescending and berates his students, especially in the honors section. Take class elsewhere!!!
The worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life. Lectures are absurdly fast and don't follow the textbook. He will berate students for not knowing the material he doesn't teach. Lab manuals are obscenely long and even have coding mistakes. If you don't buy Chegg, homework takes 4+ hours per assignment. You will have to teach yourself EVERYTHING.
Pretty much useless lectures, and a lot of homework. The saving grace is his tests are easy, so it is not very difficult to do good in the class.
If you don't understand a topic the first time he teaches it, he tells you that you are stupid and you need to switch majors. He obviously only cares about the people who knew physics beforehand. PLEASE take physics at a community college and transfer the credit, it is not worth your sanity to take his physics classes.
A exceptional professor and wonderful class. I learned so much!
This man is a living legend. Ask anybody on campus about him and their reply is "He is a great Professor". While may be the only option for Physics 111, and some people think he is bad, even horrible, they do not speak Greek so they do not understand his lectures. Since I took the non required pre requisite of Greek Language. I passed with an A.
If you ever attend UAH and have to take physics with Chronis, I have but one suggestion for you. Think seriously about literally any other profession or life goals. He will ruin it. I have never felt more strongly about a professor in any way good or bad. I would rather walk over broken glass than take is class again. *Must speak Greek*
From day 1, you are expected to have background knowledge of physics. If you don't, then he will tell you gladly that you don't belong in his Physics 1 class. To anyone you ask about him, know that one review about him being a great guy was a complete lie. EVERYONE you ask on UAH's campus says Chronis is horrible at teaching and rude. AVOID HIM PLS
Being a driven student all throughout my academic career, I've never struggled like I have in Chronis's PH111. The lectures are very difficult to follow, he expects you to have a physics background, and essentially tells you to question your self-worth in a mirror when you get a supposedly "easy" question wrong. Wouldn't recommend at all.
Dr. Chronis is fairly unprofessional and does not value the student body. He teaches by only drawing diagrams and says there are no dumb questions when in reality is rude and makes the students feel dumb whenever a student has a question. Avoid taking Chronis if possible. Be ready to teach everything to yourself.
The lab wasn't handled by Chronis, but the TA was helpful despite us having to miss classes multiple times throughout the semester. Make sure however that the TA's/Chronis have a syllabus worked out and is clearly defined before the semester starts, if not, I'd argue fight for it as it arguably hampered my groups final grade.
Chronis is clearly passionate about physics but he can't teach it on an introductory level. You could learn a lot if you already knew all the basics, but this is a Physics I course, so that isn't the case for most of us. Unfortunately a lot of students don't have time to teach themselves everything which is why cheating is so common in his class.
This professor is clear in what he wants from his students and expects no laziness. However, he does severely underprepare you for his work. Aim to get 100% on all homework and do well on exams and that will be the only way you pass his class with a B. Getting an A is nearly impossible. Nothing can prepare you well enough for his unique final.
Chronis was not a helpful professor. While I studied hard for this class Chronis went above and beyond to make sure material that was not in class was on exams (especially the final). I worked with other classmates and grad students as well and even they said they were confused by his wording and his problems and that "how would you know this"
This has now been my 3rd year of physics, and all I can say is that I struggled, in everything. Struggled to follow in class, homework was not explained methods in class, obviously I studied, hours sometimes in a row to understand. Lectures proved not to be helpful, neither was the professor. He is an alright guy outside of academics, but hell here
I took Physics I and II when I first started at UAH. Easily one of the worst classroom experiences ever. I to this day continue to talk about how awful this class was. And I made an A. Mocks students during lectures for asking "stupid" questions. Makes online tests way harder than they should be. (This was during COVID). Avoid if possible.
He was the worst professor I have ever had. He does not care about you, your grades, or if you learn.
Final: Online, cannot go back and review your answers, mostly conceptual Tests: Online, Pull from homework Homework: Online, site is more helpful than not Lectures: Hit or miss, enjoys the subject, people find him intimidating because patience is hit-or-miss and awful stories from previous students paint a bad picture; poorly worded questions
He's passionate about the subject, but he isn't great at conveying the material without succumbing to aggressive "I care about you as future engineers, why are you like this" bouts of emotion when people do poorly. His final was 42 questions for 150 minutes, and you could not go back on your questions. Questions are poorly worded on lab & practice.
Dr Chronis' class is definitely challenging but physics is also not easy. I enjoyed his class despite the occasional yelling because he actually cares about our future careers. There is not much homework but the homework questions are harder than the final so they will prepare you for the easier questions on that.
DOCTOR Chronis taught me a very valuable skills from this class.I am now able to do well in all of my upper level engineering, mathematics, and science courses. I am so happy when I will graduate and thing back on my time in DOCTOR Chronisclass and how I did not realize it at start that he was only tough with us as he cared for our success.
Avoid at all costs
Does not want people to take notes in his lectures then complains about people not recalling material. Provides notes in an unreadable format and expects his students to fix it themselves despite it being a tech issue on his end. Wastes time ranting about students wasting their own time in his class. Gives exam credit out like candy, which is scary
Chronis does not know how to teach. He does not care how well you are doing in the class. I had to teach myself solely. He was the worst professor I ever had in my life. DO NOT TAKE CHRONIS.
Exams are online and no partial credit, it's either 100% right or 100% wrong.
there are no pros. this guy just wants to watch students suffer.
I spent 15+ hours in labs per week and received 30/50. This guy gave free points to his favors. Data provided in the labs have tons of errors. The marked answers for quizzes are wrong. Lab manuals are the worst scientific documents I have ever seen. TA does not provide any help. UAH needs to hire someone to do the physics labs.
Best professor ever! He is super funny and makes jokes with class.
As long as you do well on the tests and homeworks, you can afford to fail the final (which you will). His homeworks take hours, his tests are based completely on the homework, and his final is based completely on his lectures. Nothing can prepare you for his 40 question final. That being said, he is generally kind in office hours and outside class.
He doesn't handle the lab, TA does everything. But his lab manuals are horribly written with SO many typos, and the questions and instructions are confusing and unclear. The labs are usually two weeks ahead of the lectures and cover material we haven't learned yet. He was not willing to answer questions. It also took forever to get any grades back.
Overall, this man is smart, brilliant, and knowledgeable. His issue is that he can't always translate that super well into making his students smart. His lectures only cover part of what he really wants you to know, READ CANVAS ANNOUNCEMENTS, (anger and pop quizzes on them if no one looks at them, and they're not graded), and he's quite harsh.
This professor is by far the worst I have ever had. I took this course as a transfer credit for another school. I received an A in the lecture, however the lab was different. I'm a junior and still believe this is the worst course I have ever taken. Take this lab somewhere else if possible because he will fail you.
Roses are red, violets are blue. I love Dr. Chronis, why don't you?
Dr. Chronis seems scary at first. He knows that he is teaching a weed-out course. But if you go ask questions that are beyond surface-level and make it look like you really want to understand, he will help you. Go to office hours and read the book. The tests are based on the homework, but the final is based on lectures, so very different and hard.
AVOID IF POSSIBLE! I have never had a class as awful as this one. He makes the material very difficult to understand, especially if you have a weak background in physics. Take it online somewhere else if you can. The labs he writes are also ridiculous. He is almost too smart to teach it, he cannot simplify it to teach at the level of the class.
Professor Chronis is nice enough, but the workload in terms of HIS expectations is incredible. HW is hard, but the tests are just like the HW. Keep your average high going into the final (average 50) b/c it will drop you a letter grade; it's unlike any of the HW/tests - mainly conceptual. The lab is 1 credit but requires A LOT of time.
I urge you if you are reading this before taking his class to avoid him at all costs. He is the worst teacher you will ever encounter in your life and I promise you that. His 1 credit hour labs take 10+ hours a week and he assumes you know how to program and have strong prerequisite knowledge of physics before taking physics...
good luck reading his horrible laid out lab manuals, you'll spend 8 plus hours for a 1 credit hour on a lab :)
The professor is a brutal teacher. If you are able to quickly grasp material, you'll probably be fine, but if you have the opportunity to take someone else, that's probably a smart decision. He doesn't teach his material to what's covered in the book for homework or for tests, so be warned of that, but his finals are things he makes himself!
Do not take this teacher. I failed the class and am now in jeopardy of lossing my scholarship.
Tough professor, but worth the effort. The workload is demanding, but Dr. Chronis cares about student success. Use unstuck AI, the textbook, and office hours to excel. The final exam is challenging, so stay on top of the material.
Chronis is terrible, but at least his class is stupidly easy to pass. Buy chegg, do all the homeworks with it, save the questions, and then ace the exams with them. Then bomb the final and accept your high C or low B. This class is only as difficult as you make it. If you're looking to pass the class and dont care about GPA, this is the way. Trust.
You work on labs that you are expected to know the knowledge for even though it was taught weeks ahead of ph111. TA does everything and "teaches" you. It is a one credit hour class that feels like at least a 2-3 credit hour class.
The PH 101 labs are terrible. Chronis and his TA didn't help. TA also struggled with the lab questions and didn't grade lab reports on time, and there was no feedback. Now, we are at the end of the semester. I have not received any lab report grades since the second lab report. Why can't someone look into these problems?
His mindset and teaching style can make lectures difficult to understand at times, but besides that I quite enjoy him as a professor and he has a good sense of humor. He has high expectations of his students but if you reach out to him in office hours he is more than willing to help you, especially if you are struggling with the content/homework.
Aim to get perfect scores on HW (50% of grade) and WRITE DOWN/KEEP YOUR WORK (the actual question and how you solved it). Tests (25% of grade) are just HW problems with different numbers/terms. You're almost guaranteed to fail the final exam (lecture-based), so work to get perfect scores on HW and Tests so you can at least pass.
Absolutely awful. Requires multiple purchases not available through bookstore. Uses TA's to do his job. TA's have no idea how to help.
He's too smart that info isn't digestible for new students in physics. class doesn't feel structured at all. Do good on ALL HW!! Buy Chegg for this class and use ChatGPT if you have to (you will). Keep track of all hw answers and solutions bc test are exactly like hw. final is based on his lectures so..cheat. all tests are NOT in person!!
Lab was not fun at all, but you can get through it. First lab is the longest and it's the weed out. He literally wrote his own lab manual, so yeah it's hard. sometimes TA's did not know how to help, but that also means they would cut you some slack. try your hardest and ask for help, that's all you can do.
This man is the Greek god of physics and not in a good way. He is the bane of existence of any students that have to go through him. Absolutely atrocious and I thank God I no longer have to take him.
lack of communication between Chronis, his teaching assistants, and students made it challenging to complete assignments. His course work could be very hard to understand, and the software was not always reliable. He can be defensive when reaching out with questions so it is best to ask your TA first and hope they are able to help you.
After reading the polarizing reviews and having no choice but to take this man, I was intrigued; however, the rumors are true. Chronis is a nightmare for students who care about GPA. He uses the excuse of "I don't care about your GPA if you learn" even though that's a ploy for him to be lazy with grading. Either find someone else or study a LOT.
Get ready for a tough ride. You cannot avoid Chronis for physics lab, so the only way you survive is if you get a good TA and lab group. The reports suck and take soooo much time. I only got through because of the kindness of upperclassmen. Good luck.
If you did not take physics in high school you will be 100% lost. Those that succeeded in the class lived, breathed, and ate physics. He blamed the students for a large lack of understanding and be prepared to for an additional $30-$40 cost for other materials. Be warned that unless you know physics inside and out you will struggle or fail
Lab was impossible to understand, the TA was unhelpful and refused to grade reports on time. During the lab the TA would spend time nitpicking students rather than answering questions to those who need it. Highly inaccessible and no clear grading criteria which makes lab reports take 6-8 extra hours to try and cover all information required.
The physics department requires students to buy extra material. Not the fault of Chronis. He gives everyone over a month to complete homework, and he is always willing to answer questions, no matter how naive. People would rather blame the rumors than take accountability for their own actions. If you want an A, you have to earn it in this class.
Dr. Chronis is very passionate about Physics and if you put in the effort to learn, he will make sure you succeed. That being said, he teaches the introductory Physics class as though it were a 300 level class, so don't take him if you haven't had a Physics class before. Online exams were identical to hw, but the final was completely different.
I love Dr. Chronis as a person, but his class is extremely difficult. His lectures are heavy on the theory, which is awesome, but you have to learn how to apply it on your own in the homework where you get only five attempts to get it right. Get ready to be challenged beyond your capabilities. He has an accent which can make his lectures fun!
Chronis is a good teacher, he's just very hard. He teaches like it is high level course, so do be warned, but as long as you go to class and pay attention, he does a very good job of communicating the concepts. He doesn't really teach to the test or a formula sheet, moreover, he teaches to make you get the concept.
The lab for Physics 1 was too difficult to understand. The online book was poorly set up, and sometimes the links and information were just plain wrong. The TA was not helpful at all, and was difficult to talk to, and gave little feedback on lab reports. This lab is a huge waste of time and poorly planned and designed.
Everyone on this page is being dramatic for real. Don't listen to the rumors. He ain't a bad teacher (much less a bad person) and has a lot of passion for the subject. If you just do the homework, pay attention, and ask questions, you'll be fine. He's not mean, and will help you if you just ask. He's not a monster, so don't treat him like one.
The labs are really poorly done. Broken experiments and the lab manual is full of typos, mistakes, and confusing wording. TAs are flexible and grade mostly off effort. If you try you'll be ok.
Lectures were heavily conceptual, very hard to understand the formatting of the lectures as they did not follow the textbook we were told to study. Emailed him questions for clarification on multiple occasions and was met with a rude response that prevented me from accessing materials needed in a timely manner.
This is one of the worst professors I had at Physics Department. I don't recommend this professor. You will learn lot facts about Greece and nothing about physics.
I personally didn't have a problem with Dr. Chronis, but I can see why people don't like him. His lectures are hard to follow if you don't understand the material, and he doesn't respond well to questions. His final is notoriously bad, but its VERY helpful to do the ungraded quizzes and problems he does in class, and watch the review lectures.
He isn't great if you don't know physics before or that well. He tries to make it more discussional which doesn't help when you don't know the information. His HW problems are too complicated that he even recommends AI if you get stuck. For the final, use the practice tests and review lectures. Expect whatever letter grade you have to drop by one.
I think that Chronis gets a bad wrap because physics is hard. He holds at least 2 office hours a week and is more than happy to give extensions, extra credit. He can be a little intimidating tho which isn't his fault i don't think. Just make sure to listen to what he says and don't take notes in class and just go back and rewatch the lectures later
The TA that you get will make or break the class. Chronis writes his own textbook which is riddled with various grammatical errors and misspellings. I had a very good TA, but if you get a bad one, this class will suck.
A major issue lies with the physics TAs, many of whom lack a solid understanding of basic physics. They require proper training before assisting with experiments, and they should be required to attend classes alongside us to build the foundation. Dr. Chronis and the physics department must consider these concerns & take steps to improve the labs.
He seems like a good guy who can't teach
Very difficult and unforgiving professor. I have never heard of a physics course where there is no partial credit given and homework is graded on accuracy. To make things worse, I am an athlete and I emailed him to say I was going to have to make up a test for an out of state trip and he said no. At that point I just dropped. Do not take him.
Chronis does not know how to effectively teach his students. He purposely starts his lectures incredibly confusingly and spends the entire class time showing off his brain because he understands the subject and the students don't, then ends the lecture by showing what needs to be done in the last 5 minutes of class. Take physics at Calhoun.
He has I massive ego.
To preface, Dr. Chronis is not the worst STEM professor at UAH. I graduated with my BSME and took him for both physics w/ calculus courses. Still, if you're serious about building a foundation in Newtonian mechanics, take them with someone else. Cheating through the online work will only hurt you when you hit Dynamics and other weed-out classes.
He likes to speak, but rarely makes any sense. Attendance isn't mandatory. Try to avoid him if at all possible.
Chronis is a physics genius, but his lectures are incoherent and confusing. His lectures are mainly theory-based, while the homework and tests are problem-based. He writes the lab manual, and there are many mistakes, broken links, and poorly phrased questions. Be prepared to spend 4-6 hours a week on the lab. Overall, I don't recommend him.
Chronis leads every lab section for the physics curriculum. Each lab takes a minimum 5+ hours per week in addition to time spent in the lab. The TAs often do not know what is happening and it leads to labs being more confusing than necessary and there is no rubric for reports leading to grades wildly varying report to report based on the TAs mood
This lab course is so bad and I dislike it so much. The lab manual is full of errors, hardly tells you what to do and is like a cryptic puzzle that makes sense to no one. Often the links and data had issues, the instruments were really bad at recording data and it was overall really bad. He leads every lab though so can't avoid how bad these are.
Understand that this lab is strictly run by Teachers Assistants, some good some bad. I never even met Dr. Chronis. My only interaction with him is reading his non sensical lab manual. The experiments are in the manual, you perform them with a group, write 7 lab reports worth 60% of the grade. Your lab partners mean everything choose wisely.
Average percentage scores for the whole class on the last three exams: 33%, 44.4%, 36.7%. No partial credit is given. Questions on the the final are more difficult and in a different format than on the practice exam. Homework is 50% of the grade so it is your only chance to pass is to get 100% on the homeworks. Good luck.
Did all the homework. Studied all the homework in preparation for the tests. 66% on the first test, then 14%, then 22%, and 24% on the final. The homework does not prepare you at all for the tests. There was a review for the final exam and only 2 or 3 of the 25 questions on the review showed up on the final in some form. Find a different professor.
I took Chronis for Physics 1 and 2, and passed with a C both times. He's honestly not as bad as everyone says, but his in person exams and final are no joke. I went into each final with around a 86% and dropped to a low 70% after. Get 100% on the homework and study lecture and module quizzes for exams and you'll pass.
I found Dr. Chronis' lectures to be very engaging. He really sweet professor and does care about his students(despite what many say) if you show him that u care about his class. My biggest complaint is that the homework really doesn't apply that much to what we learned in class. The final wasn't great but it was also questions we had seen before.
If you want to learn and understand physics, then this is the man to take. His lectures are fun and engaging. He's blunt, but is still a very sweet person. He clearly loves what he does and will take as much time as needed to help you if you just ask. Physics is not easy anyway, so the rumors are just from people who've never seen a B or C before.
You are expected to read the lab manual before coming to class (reasonable!). Make sure you choose a good group, if each person contributes the reports are easy. The first day of lab he threatened to send us all home with a zero, not a good first impression. You must take him for the lab, so just be aware of how he works. The TA runs the lab.
He is a very kind and understanding soul. His class is hard for a reason. He wants you to succeed in life and to do that you have to pass his class.
