He is a really awesome teacher ! He cares about his students and enjoys teaching, which makes students actually make an effort to come to class. Funny, makes class entertaining.
he is ok, puts hard questions on tests, hard work overall
Personally, I didn't mind the guy or his teaching styles. However, he is somewhat arrogant and gave a lot of students attitude and made them feel stupid. Due to this MANY people dropped the class to take the course when next year with another professor.
Theo actually makes an effort to engage the students, he's constantly making jokes and his power points are quite entertaining. By far my favorite prof.
Theo encourages students to use their own personal experiences towards critical thinking in the field. He is witty, honest, and motivating- exactly what every student needs in their academic experience.
Theo is the standard to which I hold all other professors to. His lectures are downright entertaining he demands attention but is engaging. He is always willing to talk to you and genuinely cares about his students success. I have not had a professor that comes close to comparing to the caliber of this man. came in dressed in a flamingo costume
easily approachable, helpful, very entertaining and easy going
He was always there to help and was a fun and engaging teacher.
Prof Selles was my first prof ever, and I'm so grateful I had him because he made Uni less scary. He's really cool and nice. Lecture are great!
He's a great teacher and gets the class going, although his lectures are so long it can go for a day so expect to read before class and after class. Reading the chapters assigned per week is essential to passing that's all you need to know. The more time you spend on the textbook and focusing what he says in class then you will definitely pass.
More conversational than a lecture. You can get by on just the book but he makes it so much easier and enjoyable. He plays reggae music before exams and gives out candy so you feel relaxed. He always makes sure that you have enough time to finish, puts the same questions on the next test to redeem yourself plus bonus marks. Overall very chill.
Awesome prof! Would take this course again.
He was very helpful and nice.
Theo is a great professor. He is very responsive with emails and is always good to talk to. His discussions in class kept me very engaged. He inspired me to become a counselor.
Hilarious, inspiring, and fun prof. Great class discussions. Expects you to read textbook, and encourages this EVERY class for a good grade. Will call you out and embarrass you if you aren't paying attention, or if you are on your phone so beware. He HATES it. Gives away many test/exam questions IN CLASS ONLY.
Theo is energetic and enthusiastic, and can be a little quirky. His lectures are informative and memorable, and make you excited to learn.
He's a very focused on the concept of critical thinking when it comes to teaching his students and in all honestly, try to skim the textbook chapter before coming to class to get a better understanding of his lectures or else you're going to have a bad time in trying to learn in some cases.
Short & sweet. Theo is hands down the most influential professor to give to 1st year students. He is relateable, warm, and genuinely smarter than he gives himself credit for. His classes always brightened my day and I feel thrilled knowing that he'll be inspiring students long after I'm gone. Cheers, Theo!
Theo is the type of prof to call you out in class if you don't regularly participate, even in a class of 100+ students, so be ready for that. He replies very fast to his emails and is overall a good teacher, but his tests are difficult. I passed the class easily without reading the textbook, but if you want a good mark you should read it.
Great prof and great guy. He's willing to bend the curve a bit for you if you just talk to him. Lack of notes in lectures gets tiresome if you are note savvy. Emphasis on groupwork, sometimes falls through but also gets you talking with your classmates. Tests are fair and straightforward.
Really cannot say much about Theo. Really enjoyed his class at the beginning of the term, but he changed that pretty fast. Not the most understanding person even though he may say that he is understanding. Still learned a lot from his class, very undecided about how I feel about his character.
Theo is so genuine, he is a professor that REALLY cares about his students. Lectures are fun and tests are fair. Reading the textbook is key to doing well. Overall, loved Theo and his class. (Never skipped a class!) Only downside to Theo is he will not hesitate to call you out in front of everyone if you are on your phone haha, so be careful.
the content is a little difficult but theo is a great teacher. he seems tough at first but hes cool
Absolutely terrible. He makes students feel terrible, singles out people, makes snarky unnecessary comments all the time, extremely strict, he's rude to students when they don't know the course outline off by heart then switches dates without any warning. He's on a power trip. Cool for first years but avoid him if you can in higher years.
You're awesome, keep on keeping on
Theo is truly an inspirational prof. He cares about his student and it shows. He very flexible and accomodating
On behalf of the majority of the class, he has inspired, empowered, and challenged us to be better humans than we were coming into this program. We have him to thank for that. He's the only professor we collectively got a card for with letters from us about how he has touched our lives. Social work students would be lucky to learn from him.
Amazing professor. Encourages participation and pushes you to think critically about class topics. The one professor I actually listen to, his lectures are interesting and useful. He can justify everything he does and has real life experience to back up his knowledge. Also an amazing person, willing to go above and beyond to help any student.
Theo is the most genuine professor I have experienced. He cares for all of his students and wants them all to succeed. I have learnt the most in all of the courses that he has taught. He is understanding and accomodating to student's. He is truly an empowering person.
Theo is an outstanding professor who is always willing to go above and beyond. He empowers his students to strive towards their goals by challenging themselves. He is a great listener and is very understanding of his students needs. He understand when students have events in their lives that may affect the ability of them to complete assignments.
Theo is the best professor I have ever had. He goes out of his way to make sure his students succeed and is more than fair in his assignment and grading. Theo offers a different perspective and encourages his students to think critically. I have never had a professor as genuine as him. I will miss having Theo as a professor.
The professor is quite amazing, always willing to help and to go the extra mile. He is very passionate about making a positive impact in our professional development. Highly critical of mediocrity and unserious attitudes as it often has a negative impact on service recipients. Integrity is very important to Theo
Skip class? You won't want to! Theo is by far the best professor this school has. He will challenge you and help you to grow and expand your critical thinking skills. You can tell he is passionate about his students and our futures. If you get the chance to take one of his classes you won't regret it.
Most amazing Professor and possibly human being. If you want to leave university knowing that you've truly learned something valuable and to be an empowering person- then take his class. I promise you it will be life changing and the only classes you will remember are his. He Cares so much for his students and vice versa. Schools need more Theo.
Theo is honestly the most genuine, kind, caring, empowering, and inspiring professor at UoGH. He will challenge you, he will inspire you, he will encourage you to be the best you that you can be, and he will change your perspective on life/social work/commonly held beliefs/& on yourself. Truly one of a kind. Amazing prof, highly recommend!!!
Theo helps you become a critical thinker, he doesn't let you as a student settle for just the textbook material. He makes sure you know why we learn what we do. I have had 5 classes with him from 1st year to my very last semester. We did many class discussions that are essential to your learning experiences. His teaching style is very creative!
Theo is truly an inspiring professor. I've never met a professor who is so willing to self-reflect and learn from students just as much as we learn from him. His lectures will keep you interested, and wanting to learn more. Theo goes above and beyond to give his students the best that he can. I've never met such an empowering person and teacher.
Theo is one of the most authentic professors I have ever met. You can tell Theo is not there for the money, but is there for the students to provide valuable insight and learning. Theo will challenge your thinking, and empower you to be the best that you can be. We need more Theo in the FCSS program and at UOGH. By far the best professor
I had Theo for 4 different classes, and he is by far my favourite professor EVER. He is such a genuine, and authentic person.. He teaches in a way that sets you up to go out into your professional field, and do amazing things, if you are open to it. He will definitely challenge you, but you learn SOO much from these challenges. Truly Inspirational.
Theo isn't only an awesome prof, but just generally an awesome person. His goal during any class he teaches is to aid students in stepping outside their comfort zones and empowering them to be the best version of themselves. Outside of class he will accommodate students above and beyond any other professor I've ever had.
If there is one professor who genuinely cares for their students, it would be Theo. He cares about students on a personal level and truly wants the best for them. Out of the four classes I have for my last semester, I have learned the most from his class. I will remember everything he has taught me. He is one hell of a person AND prof!
Truly Inspiring. Theo will challenge you, your thinking and make you question the world. He had made a significant impact during my experience at University of Guelph Humber. Be prepared to learn more about yourself and grow if you get the pleasure of attending even just ONE of his lectures.
I loved Theos class. It made me want to pursue a career in psychology from taking his class He was amazing. Funny and fair. The way his class was structured was perfect for me personally because assignments aren't my strength while I can get 90s on tests without studying. This class only has 2 or 3 unit tests and then the final exam.
Theo is unlike any other professor I've had. He pushes you to be a better version of yourself, he shows you a new side to the world and is always willing to value and challenge you. He's more than just reading textbook material, he actually teaches you important lessons that are valuable for your future. I am lucky to have had him as a Professor!
Although I enjoy the class, it does feel as if the course is How to think like Theo. Lectures seem more like inspirational talks rather than lectures. Discussions will often lead to his opinions (definitions, techniques, models). Some material conflicts with other classes. Even if you hate him, you can still learn a lot. Just keep an open mind.
The "Don't" category when rating the prof summarizes him
This guy is really something else. Tough on people that piss him off though, don't go on your phone in class. Some may say he has a big ego, but he is hilarious. You need to go to class.
Theo is the best prof I've had. He's consistently pushed me to do better. People who whine about his strictness don't understand that he's teaching you how to be a professional- you wouldn't play on your laptop or phone in a meeting with your boss, or let the door slam behind you. He challenges his students because he loves them like his own.
I've had Theo for two classes so far in my University career and his classes are the ones I remember most. He pushes you to be professional, and be curious when learning in his class. You NEED to attend lecture, his tests will be heavily focused on lecture/discussion material. Also PARTICIPATE, he loves it and will genuinely appreciate the effort!
I have had Theo for three years now, and I really enjoy his lectures. His approach to teaching is very different and is unique in comparison to many of the professors at GH. Theo really does care about his students and shows it through his actions. I would definitely continue to take whatever courses he teaches.
Chill laid back teacher but his grading does not make sense and his reflection assignment is too much work. His lectures are really nice.
You need to show up to his classes and really stay engaged because he doesn't just read the textbook back to you during lectures. He actually brings a lot of valuable lessons to lectures that you won't read about but will be tested on. Make sure you at least skim through your textbook for definitions and theories.
I've had the privilege of having Theo for four years. He is one of the best FCSS professors. He encourages us to be critical thinkers and better practitioners. He shows us the realities of the field. He encourages us to be empowering in every aspect of our lives. If you want to do well in his class: show up, participate, & read your textbook!!
He's a great guy and really cares for his students. He can get misunderstood for his bluntness but out of all the other profs at GH, Theo keeps it real. He encourages his students to do better and will check in on students to see if they are doing okay. He's a great great amazing guy.
Theo is hands down the best prof I've ever had. I've had Theo for 4+ classes throughout GH and always aimed to get in his class. He is down to earth, facilitates controversial conversations with grace, and empowers you to be your best self. Go to every class, participate, stay off your phone & read the textbook and you'll pass with flying colours.
Took a mandatory course with him. His lectures are interesting and you can tell he is passionate about the content he is teaching. But golly! His attitude leaves much to be desired; unapproachable and arrogant. Gave up asking him for help. Questionable grading too, especially for self reflections. Lectures8/10. Grading4/10. Prof? 2/10
Genuinely the worst person a student can get for a professor. He is SO lazy and really rude. There is a Discussion form for people who have questions because he decided not to do any zoom calls, and with that if there was a question that was already asked, and you ask it again. He will respond rudely and not answer the question. IcantSayAnyMoreTy
Professor Theo is amazing! He is super interactive in class, we did fitness activities, guest speakers etc. He does single people out for participation but it is a good way to stay focused!
After receiving a negative review, Theo forced everyone in the class to go on Rate My Prof and write something positive to offset the rating. Maybe just try being a better prof :)
Theos modules are great and clear. He is very passive-aggressive and can be intimidating. Make sure you hand in your work on time otherwise you will get called out and make sure you read the course outline. He is not the worst but thick skin will be needed to handle the feedback or the in classes'. Also very hard to reach outside class
would not take again, he's rude and does not explain anything. Assigns five things at once and shortens the deadline, does not help with anything or answer any questions you may have.
Really cool guy, one of the few classes I can say I thoroughly enjoyed.
Horrible teacher, On my paper he marked it saying social anxiety is the same as every anxiety, when my paper is about how I would treat it differently then another type of anxiety like seriously, your teaching US OKAYY??? Go retire already W/O a pension please, you dont even know what youre doing.
theo is terrible at answering questions and has an incredibly rude attitude. his grading is super questionable and he's not understanding in the slightest. would never take a class of his again.
I really enjoyed Theo as a prof! Definitely better than a majority of profs I've had at humber. Would take again
For a social worker, he is a complete JERK!! 0 compassion.
I have had Theo for the last couple os years and he is by far the worst professor I have ever had. Extremely disrespectful towards students, does not care about you nor your mental health. What kind of therapist does not care about someones mental health?
From reading past reviews that rate him 5 stars sure seem very forced. Firstly, no teacher is perfect so it definitely looks like Theo himself is keeping tabs on this site, telling students to make better reviews or he's doing it himself. Secondly, his online lectures are v boring. Just try to pass as best as you can. Unfortunately there is a book.
The book he requires is beyond annoying to read. Too much detailed information in the chapters makes it hard to take notes. He responds very vaguely to messages which is probably why he is perceived as rude. He's very strict when it comes to testing. For a therapist, you think he would be more understanding but he proves this wrong. Good luck
the major assignment for empowerment is very tedious. thank you
I don't know what all the negative feedback came from at all! He isn't tough in the slightest, everyone has their opinion but I feel those were extremely unfair! He's the teacher when you look back at in 20 years and say "I had the best prof for this class!" He's a FAIR marker, not easy. It's only easy if you show up, put in the work AND effort.
I understand his perspectives and he brought a critical lens to the content. But overall his attitude of entitlement was offputting. He complains about how students don't put in enough effort to make classes empowering but I would say the same about him. Seems like he's tired of driving to campus and interacting with students by the way he talks.
I personally liked Theo! He is such a sweetheart, plus if you try in his classes, you will do well! Follow the rubric, reflect on your experiences and any suggestions he makes in his lectures, and you will be fine. I could not imagine taking this course with someone else; I enjoyed having him!
Interesting and thought provoking lectures in the empowerment course. HOWEVER, for a therapist he is the least empowering individual. There's a fine line between a dry, sarcastic sense of humor and just being straight up disrespectful. Very particular with how he grades. BUY THE TEXTBOOK and read on your own, because he RARELY uses it.
Amazing lectures! Honestly, I learned a lot from the empowerment class and am thankful that it was mandatory. I believe that everyone should take some form of empowerment course or workshop including Professor Selles, because he is the least empowering therapist/professor I have ever met. Hopefully he has changed for the better over the years.
This is solely based on the professor himself and not the class per se, because I really enjoyed the content that the FCSS4040 Empowerment course had. The lectures were not bad either. Unfortunately, Theo lost points in his lack of approachability with students and his overall demeaner when he is asked questions. He comes off as arrogant and rude.
He gave us an exam on week 5 before anyone had a chance to read or review. He's a twat.
Very hard to reach out for questions and whenever I did he would have annoyed tone whenever I asked the question. I would not recommend him to my worst enemy.
Theo was an awesome professor, I am not sure about the other comments, though what I learned is that if you come to class and do the work he gives out when he says to do it, you will be fine. Many waited until the end of the term and was missing important info but if you stay up to date you will receive a great mark. Very funny and entertaining.
A disrespectful professor that does not look out for the interest of anyone but himself. If you ask him a question, expect unclear, if any, instructions/answers; you can also expect barely any information on exams, which makes students feel stressed. To cover his lack of sympathy he attempts to act funny to be on certain students' good side.
I haven't regretted taking a class with a professor as much as I did with him. Not only is he extremely inconsiderate, but he's also extremely disrespectful as well. Taking his class this semester I'm only moving forward with trauma and nothing learned. You put in all the effort and it's just 0 because that's just what he feels like. MUST AVOID!!
How can you be a therapist with no empathy? With no keenness to teach and no patience to deal with your students? The worst professor here in my opinion, and as the review shows I'm not the only one with such views.
This gentleman is more of a student-given power than a professor. Wouldn't even explain what you did wrong in your exam and expects you to figure everything out yourself. Also, all the positive reviews are clearly done by him since he really cares about his image and asks you to rate him highly on here
DO NOT TAKE IT IF YOU DON'T COME TO CLASS, otherwise sure. He acts like a student given power, shows bare attitude, hates when your not paying attention, and also most of his midterm and final were from slides and stuff he talked about. HE SUCKS
I believe you either really like him, or you really don't. I truly enjoyed his class, and i received a good final grade because I went to every single lecture. If you miss even one lecture, it can really alter your final grade so i suggest you make friends that can send you notes if you miss a day. He's very easy to get along with and hilarious.
Try to avoid taking his class at all costs. At first, when I was in his class I thought he would've been a solid prof but as the weeks piled up, this turned out not to be true. He is rude and arrogant, and when he answers your emails it's always in a disrespectful manner. Failed me on an assignment because I didn't FULLY fill up a couple of pages
Theo is a terrible professor, I would not recommend him at all. Does not give an outline for exams so you don't know what to focus on. The worst professor at Guelph-Humber!
He is a great guy and a fun professor, as long as you do the weekly work you'll do fine
Theo teaches based on his experience and his ideas. There is no textbook content and no theoretical evidence to back his ideas. When he tries to encourage students to speak, he comes off as rude and sarcastic. His exam questions are based on what's said in class. So you have to come to class, or you fail.
Great teacher, the guy's hilarious and keeps us engaged with questions and experiments we do in class. Don't use your phone in this teacher's class, might be good for some people from time to time.
Theo's class was very memorable for me; I looked forward to every lecture. He's very funny and makes the lessons interesting. I've learned a lot from his in-person classes, but even if you miss a class he provides all his slides online with audio (plus you can reference the textbook). I'd still try to come to class though because it's a lot of fun.
Theo is amazing !!!!!
I enjoyed his classes, the lectures were really fun and interactive. Assignments were easy and based on coursework. Do NOT use your phone during class, he will call you out. Tests were easy and based on what you learn. He does have a specific character and is strict.
Engaging lectures and accessible materials make Theo's class worthwhile. The textbook and slides cover the content well, but attending class is a must. Unstuck AI also proved helpful for review prep.
I did this course as an online general elective. Theo was clear on his expectations but did not overwhelm with assignments or tests. You read, study, write your papers and do the tests. He inspires you to be passionate about what you are learning and understand how you can use it in everyday life.
if ur not white good luck in his class, also dont forget to bring a sick note for every class you miss because god forbid you miss one class that you pay for without a "good enough reason" to him (mind you this ass doesnt even take attendance nor does he remember your face, ive never been so disrespected by a prof in my life, or spoke down to by 1
Theo needs to focus more on teaching rather than spending the whole semester doing presentations that students have to remember for tests. No lectures, no test reviews, nothing. I'm learning absolutely nothing. Needs to work on his attitude and not disrespect other students in his 'quirky' little ways. I hope he does not teach any more courses.
