Speaks with a very thick accent and is very hard to understand and follow. Tests are super hard, and he was very unhelpful!!!
Overall an O.K. teacher. If you miss too much class, he deducts points off your test. He requires a lot of additional work outside of class time.
He does tell stories but only to provide a solid example. It is easy for students in a small town like this to think in small terms whereas he has seen much of the world. Therefore he brings everything to an understandable level. Excellent professor!
Dr. Sypris is a great teacher. I suspect that many of the negative comments are a result of the bottom-of-the-barrel students who are going to populate, on average, entry level courses at a community college. As a grad of the Hist Dept at Western, I can tell you, if you think Sypris is demanding, think again!
great teacher, and courses are very interesting.
Great professor. Extremely helpful.
Sypris is most definitely a hard grader. But he also offers many opportunities for extra credit (ex. attending lectures, cultural events, writing essays). He also has study sessions in his office with coffee and tea. The trick is actually studying. Really. It's that simple. I ended up with a B+ and a few got As. Everyone received what they earned.
There is a lot of busy work, 2 outside of class 3 hour mock situations, 15 essays, and the tests require being able to apply the material. If you miss class points are taken off of tests. There are extra credit points that will help you go up about 1/2 a grade. He has high expectations and will help you is you go to his office to ask. Ask QU !
Good professor. Class is just him lecturing the whole time. Study his notes and textbook chapters before each exam. Put in the effort, easy A.
Such a good teacher! He definitely doesn't make the class easy- but if you put in the time to study his notes and read the textbook, you will get a good grade. Plus, he's very friendly and personable. I hope I have him again!
Professor Sypris is a gentlemen first and foremost. He's a very kind hearted and nice man. His class is very hard for sure. The tests have a lot of misleading questions that are hard to answer. You have to read and reread and reread to do well. He gives TONS of extra credit opportunitys so as long as you take advantage of those you will be fine.
Theo spyris was a wonderful instructor. his knowledge on the material was greatly helpful to a broader understanding of the subject matter. Obviously it's a college class, so you are expected to work for the grade you want to achieve. my only suggestion would be to have more homework , for point purposes, for those who aren't great test takers!
Amazing instructor who is easy to understand and supplies a depth of information with every lecture.
Sir, Theo Sypis, is an amazing man, teacher and leader for the foolish kids he is forced to teach. Example, only two students read the required chapters for the lecture today. He was kind about it and took the extra time to assist the foolish who are not prepared for class, still giving an excellent lecture to those of us who are. He is THE BEST!
An amazing instructor that everyone should experience as some point in their college careers. Sign up for at least one of his classes!
Good professor. Lectures are a little boring sometimes, but he really encourages a lot of discussion. I'd take him again.
Very tedious class. I struggled in the beginning. The exams are hard, make sure you study extensively. Many people dropped this class but you have to be very committed to it. I received an BA, the teacher raised my grade because I did bad on exam
I'm disappointed so many others disliked professor Sypris, I really enjoyed having him. He is one of the sweetest profs I've ever had and is willing to help with any questions, if you are willing to take the time to ask them. He gets frustrated with people that don't do the readings. Overall I enjoyed him as a professor.
I'm surprised to see so many low ratings for Prof. Sypris. I absolutely adore his class. I'm a serious PoliSci student, and at the 200 level it's hard to find challenging classes, yet he challenges me every day, and has opened my eyes to so many new ways of looking at world affairs. He's a fantastic teacher, with so much life experience to share.
Uber freaking tough but if you pay attention and show up you'll do fine. Tests are doozies but he's a great guy and will have you laughing and learning. He has so much experience to offer and more than once will he be able to tie in his past experiences to the class. Be prepared to go to outside of class events and presentations for bonus points!
Very nice and clear about what will be graded. His test are somewhat difficult, lots of awkward wording and tricky questions.
Dr. Sypris is probably the most intelligent professor in the political science department at KVCC. He's also a great professor, knows his material very well and teaches it in a very understandable way. Highly recommend.
Theo is my favorite professor so far at KVCC! There is a lot of reading involved, but honestly I didn't do most of it and still got an A. Tests are not too hard, you need to have a general ideal of the material and relate it to the real world in your own way. Attendance is a must! Take really good notes and you will do well on tests. Great guy!
TAKE HIS CLASS! TRUST ME! Very funny and extremely smart. Makes you think in new ways!
is a nice person, though I had a hard time focusing, as he is not the best speaker. He is extremely intelligent, and it shows. I got along with him really well, and found that going to his office hours makes up for some of the confusion in class. Will take again.
He doesn't like to cover the basics in class because he expects you to have read about it in the book. So, if you're not a big reader the tests can be really hard unless you're prepared enough to ask him just the right questions to get the answer you want. He really challenges his students. Funny. Smart. Not for you if you want an easy class.
I've had Theo before, and I love him as a prof. He challenges his students in and out of the classroom, which I guess is the reason some students don't like him. He's not easy. I think sometimes he doesn't realize that he expects his students to dive deeper than he does in the classroom, which is a problem when it comes to test time!
great prof. very recomendable. he seems very laid back and always in a good mood. i found his papers/test to be a bit tough though.
he was an alright prof, made class interesting.
Makes government class actually interesting. Very sociable and a fun teacher. Let's everyone get their point across in conversations, and is cool to be in discussions w/ during class.
Theo is an extremely nice guy and he knows his politics. However, his lecture skills are not where they should be. He is not very clear on the subject and is kind of awkward at times. He is an easy grader and does try his best to keep things interesting. There is chances for extra credit and the homework quizzes are fairly easy and open book.
good professor, but a hard grader on papers. Interesting lectures, and a great sense of humor. Highly recommended.
Really nice guy and he knows the data analysis side of politics extremely well. Extremely quick to help. However, he is an awful speaker. He's very awkward and has real trouble answering questions from students in a clear manner. His expectations are also not clear most of the time. Frustrating prof to have just because of the speaking.
Theo is a piece of work. He has extremely high expectations and he pushes you to learn. But he's one of my favorite teachers so far at KVCC. He expects active participation every day, and if you speak up in class and know you're stuff, you will get an A. If you want a professor who cares about your education and never slacks off, take Theo.
He is very knowledgeable about the subject and brings in a lot of outside examples that are really interesting, but he grades really harsh. He seems to expect the students to have a lot of political science background and he runs the class like it's an upper level when many of the students have no experience with the subject. Exams are brutal.
He has very high expectations for a 200-level class. Reading, extensive note-taking, and attendance is required to receive a good grade in this class. His exams are quite difficult, and he is a very hard grader.
Dr. Sypris is great and very smart! His teaching methods really promote learning- reading quizzes which aren't hard if you read, a paper, and his exams are challenging but make you think and learn. I learned more in this class than any other. Definitely should take Dr. Sypris!
Very knowledgeable and interesting. Definitely recommend taking him as a professor. Test style is different but if you follow his recommendations you'll do well. Expects a lot from students but success is not unobtainable.
It is not an easy class. You have to work hard, attend classes, do your readings and pay attention to syllabus and lectures. You will learn a lot if you want to. If you just want an easy A - don't bother. If you are ambitious, hard-working student - go ahead - you will like this class.
Theo was a phenomenal professor. I have never taken another IR course, but he gave me a serious interest and helped students understand the challenges of IR - understands nuance. One fault: he hasn't quite gotten used to being at KVCC with freshmen. Of course students can't always go to his office hours if they need help. I would highly recommend!
I have had him for several classes and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. He is incredibly nice and helpful. Always willing to help people who need it. A lot of people complain about the amount of ready--its pretty average for a university class. He doesn't baby his students the way some do, and thats one of the reasons he's my favorite.
Good note taking, basic understanding of the assigned readings, and regular class attendance will get you an A. If you want to learn more about the world, though, the grade should be inconsequential anyway. Prof. Stories is very intelligent. The work amount is normal for a 200-level class.
Theo was hands down THE best professor I have ever had! He has high expectations for each of his students, but is willing to help all of them succeed (if they are willing)! He assigns a lot of reading, lectures are easy and exams are easy! He's also super sarcastic (DON'T TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE THAT)! He also offers A TON of extra credit!
I enjoyed his class. Yes, he's 100% outspoken and may come off rude/arrogant but it's through humor, which is similar to mine. You'll read a couple of books. READ bc you'll be tested! A few exams, final paper/project. Very demanding on his grading criteria. Visit office hours and he'll help you with your questions. MANY EC OPPORTUNITIES!
Tough, but fair. You will learn in his class. He has an interesting sense of humor, but is really a nice guy and actually cares about your grade. Offers extra credit, and will let you re-do assignments sometimes if you did awful. He does a lot of quizzes based on the reading. If you don't read you will fail the quizzes but if you do they are easy.
Theo does not play around. He is extremely clear on what he wants, how he wants it and when he wants it. Funny professor, and gives great real world examples for text info. Brings real world issues to light and shows how important they are for students to be aware of. I would definitely take a class with him again.
A very genuine teacher that is also very outspoken. If you get offended easily, be careful of this professor. Understands you, but isn't quick to sympathize. To be more specific, he gives criterion on his papers that he 100% EXPECTS you to follow. Follow those criteria exactly. TRY in his class. Ask for help, he's very willing. Tests are fair.
He is kind of outspoken and has a strong opinion. His class is very interesting. We had a lot of reading and his power points are crazy long- you will need a big binder. HE WILL GIVE YOU POINTS BACK IF YOU TALK TO HIM. This got me an A. Go to his office hours and he will help you outline your papers & tells you exactly what he wants in them.
He is my ultimate favorite professor so far at KVCC simply because he knows his stuff, he's passionate about it, it's important to him that students understand the material, and he lays it out in ways that are super easy to comprehend. He's an amazing teacher. Take him. You won't regret it.
The class was extremely hard, I got a C+, but I have a big feeling that I would have done a lot better if I actually read and looked at the notes every night, this is not a class to not do stuff in. DON'T PROCRASTINATE IN HERE. I didn't like his lectures, he didn't put the notes on bb and lost me during his explanations. Go to his office, it helps
A great prof overall. Speaks loudly & clearly, interesting lectures, participation in discussion is required, and lots of note-taking. Keep up with the readings or you'll never be able to catch up. Tests are moderately easy if you pay close attention and attend all classes. He's willing to help if you ask for it.
If you aren't willing to read EVERY reading assignment, don't bother taking this professor. The class is pretty interesting but the books were really dense and hard to plow through.
VERY good guy. Class is not a blow off class, there is a lot of reading and map quizzes. Sometimes he talks about stuff thats hard to understand but he is very good about clearing up things. ASK QUESTIONS, he really respects you when you do.
Loved the class. Learned a lot. Must do the reading and attend class to do well. Map quizzes every week. Tests are tough but fair. Should do well if attend class and take good notes. Only complaint is the comprehensive final.
For the most part, this professor/class were ok. We read a couple books that were interesting - make sure you keep up with them. As for papers, he tells you what he expects and even if you follow the rubric exactly, it's still pretty tough to get an A on them. Lectures are kind of entertaining. No final exam, only an easy project. Lots of EC opps
By far one of my favorite professors at KVCC. He is opinionated but he is very intelligent. He will challenge your perspectives. This course is eye opening and interesting. You can learn a lot from Prof. Sypris and he is absolutely hilarious, so that helps.
Theo Sypris was very interesting. at first he may come across as a sarcastic jerk but he is a really nice guy. if you don't do the readings you will have no idea what he is talking about. sometimes gives pop-quizzes but if you read you will get 100%. gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and you can earn a lot of points XC. overall very good.
One of my harder classes this semester, but definitely worth taking for a History professor. Theo is hilarious most of the time and makes going to class worth it. However, he can be extreemley critical in the way he grades papers, so watch out! Tests were a challenge to but if you study you should do fine. Overall, great professor.
Theo is a super helpful professor. He is hilarious, passionate and truly wants every student to succeed. In the beginning he does come off as insanely strict, but as long as you show up to class, do your reading, and pay attention he will do whatever he can to help you if you need it. Pay attention to rules for papers, ask if you don't understand.
He has a very clear point of view and makes sure students know it. If you don't read you won't pass the class. Most assignments were easy if you understand political science. Grading was not very clear, but he was willing to help if you went to his office hours. I would not recommend taking any of his classes.
He is an ok guy, but a bad professor. I am an A student and I am getting a B in the Class. He is terrible when it comes to grading. I spent well over 20 hours on a 10-12 page paper, did exactly what he said and only got a B-. This is a good class, but do not take this professor.
If you're prepared to read 20-50 pages before each class and actually attend and pay attention to lectures, you'll be surprised at just how much you learn. Easily in my top 5 favorite profs. Hard work, fairly hard grader, but friendly and willing to help if you ask, and it feels good to earn an A! Also not afraid to tell you if you're wrong.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE LECTURES. Make a note of what he repeats and you will know what to focus on for the test. Skim the text, do the supplemental reading. Study for the map quizzes and they will be an easy A.
Easy class. Prof really knows his stuff when it comes to international conflict. Recommended.
He is a good teacher, kinda boring at times but actually talks about things that are interesting and helped me understand the material. Go to him for help if needed, ask questions and attend class good prof overall
Take this guy over. You'll at least learn the stuff and not be yelled at for being wrong or having an opinion. Straight lectures but he likes to field class discussions which make time go by faster. Only Midterm, final, and a paper, and some map quizzes. LIsten and study and you'll do fine.
Theo Sypris is one of the best professors I've ever had at KVCC. His class is NOT a cake walk, you'll do a lot of reading and definitely go to class and take papers and tests very seriously. However, he's very thorough, clear, and helpful and his lectures are interesting.
takes attendance EVERY DAY. treats class like a high school class. boring lectures. rarely applies theories to everyday situations. young guy who thinks he knows all. map quizzes every week. worksheets due every day based on the readings. too much busy work. PICKS APART YOUR TEST ANSWERS. overall, not fun. avoid if possible.
Eh. 1 hour and 15 minute classes seem like 3 hours. straight lecture. 4 tests that he grades incredibly hard. very nice guy, though.
He's okay. His tests are graded unbelievably hard, but he tries. A for Effort, C for Achievement.
Fresh out of college. His class consists of brief map quizzes once a week, lecture, two tests and one essay. Very laid back and has interesting lecture. Big chunk of grade is on attendance, so make sure you show up. He is very easy to talk to and I highly suggest you take him, especially if you're looking just to finish or fill up your theme!
I like this man very much. It's a good class, I recommend it.
Prof. Sypris is one of the best professors at KVCC. He is extremely organized and presents information in a way that allows for discussion, though makes sure that all important things are covered. Truly, he is one of the best professors I have had. Make sure to go to his office so that he can go over your paper with you. Also nice to talk with.
Ok prof. I wish there was more time given at the beginning to go over law vocab, as he expects you to understand how to read court cases right away, but thats just me. Nice enough guy, passionate about this, but I wish it was structured differently. Learn how to brief a court case before this class -he doesnt explain it and its 20% of your grade
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING PROF. By far my favorite during my College.
Theo Sypris is a tremendous and very well-liked professor with a great sense of humor. He manages to take a very dry topic (constitutional law) and make it so interesting that it will leave you wishing on some days that class time wasn't up. He'll happily explain things in different ways if you have questions and never talks down to students.
Best professor ever. His lectures are amazing and he makes the materially crystal clear and enjoyable to learn. I thought I was going to hate the class, but after just two weeks he had me loving it. Best professor at KVCC and a great guy.
My favorite professor I've had at KVCC. His lectures are really great and easy to understand and he opens class up to discussion that often furthers to explain concepts. Lots of reading and a notecard reading summary is due every class for 20% of the grade. Two papers and a final, not the easiest class but worth it if you want to put in the work.
Very knowledgeable professor who is very well-spoken in the area of constitutional law. The class is quite a bit of work, with in-class participation and doing the reading assignments both are a must if you want to do well. Three tests, seven case briefs, a case project, and a participation evaluation makeup your grade. Awesome course; I recommend.
Incredibly smart professor who knows his stuff, and is always willing to answer questions. Largely a discussion-oriented class, and you'll get more out of it if you talk. Reading summaries, two 5-page papers, and a cumulative final. Attendance isn't mandatory, but a reading summary is due each period (worth 25% of your final grade total).
Professor Sypris is one of the smartest and most interesting professors at KVCC. He seems to really understand how to explain topics to students in a way that makes you interested and involved. Hands down my favorite professor at the University and everyone should have the chance to take his classes.
Really helpful, will meet with you for every paper. The best prof. I have had thus far at KVCC, great sense of humor, and his brain is amazing!!!
Love Theo Sypris. Class was a bit difficult but he loves to elobaorate more if you need to. Just ask. Meet with him for your papers!
Theo is the best professor I have had. Although the class did not appeal to me prior to taking it, his passion for the course was contagious. He was clear, helpful and had a great sense of humor. I highly recommend taking him if you have an interest in Political Thought/Politics, but be prepared for a LOT of writing, reading, and interpretation.
I'm already a horrible test taker but his tests were especially difficult for me. You read the chapters fully in class then I would read them up and down before his exams and I still felt unprepared. Your grade is dictated by his exams, take home tests, video reports and 2 simulations (these were super fun).
I had Sypris for both HRY 251 and HRY 252. Both times I had good experiences. Although they are not easy classes you have enough time to do well on them. He is a very fair grader. His accent can be challenging at first, but you get used to it fast. Take him if you have serious desire to learn and challenge yourself, otherwise take something else.
Professor Sypris is a great teacher and is very reasonable. Like any upper-level college course, you have to work hard to get a good grade. He is a consistent lecturer and grader so you know what to expect throughout the semester. I definitely recommend taking a course with him!
This was not the easiest class I have taken at KVCC, but I'm very happy with my decision to take his class. He is a very interesting and knowledgeable professor. Have a chat with him sometime after class you will be impressed with his intelligence. He grades tough but only because he expects the best out of his students.
Professor Sypris really quite great. Yes, his classes are hard, and yes you are expected to do a lot, but that's what you're paying for! People who say he expects/asks too much are either not interested in the topic or do not work hard enough.
Professor Sypris is a nice guyand definitely interested in the subject. The lectures can get a bit boring but not terribly. Exams aren't too hard if you do the reading guides and study.
He has an accent, but you get used to it pretty quickly. His exams are a little on the hard side, but not too bad if you study and pay attention. He is a nice guy and a good prof.
Mostly discussions but he expects you to participate. Tests are easy if you understand material but be prepared to write a good amount on the tests.
He's a really nice guy and he is very willing to help students. He is kind of a tough grader and gets off topic a lot in lectures too. His study guides are great though and he pulls directly from the book. A few Map quizzes, one paper, and three exams. Not too bad, but he is looking to see students really know the information.
He is great! I think the class was super easy BUT you have to show up, as there are frequent map quizzes and lectures are the primary source of info. If you put in the effort you will get a great grade. He is always helpful if you ask questions. You will learn a lot.
This class is SO EASY. His lectures can be pretty disorganized, but the information is not difficult at all. Moiles can be a little boring, especially if you are not interested in political science/current events- he likes to ramble on for a long time, but its fine, because when he rambles about current events its not on the test. KNOW YOUR VOCAB!
Lectures are a tad boring, but his test are easy if you study. Weekly online quizzes were fairly easy too.
The test are extremely hard and worth 50% of your grade. He gives you notes and just says study all. He's a nice guy but just a terrible dis-organized teacher. There is a test every 3 chapters, which is extremely difficult because 3 chapters covers so much its impossible to know..
Sypris is an amazing and knowledgeable instructor, but the amount of content from a condensed textbook into one semester is insane. Tests are monthly or every couple chapters. Lots of memorization, and lots of online homework and book reading. The lecture notes somewhat match the online coursework, but you still need to read to pass the online.
Only take if you are are an auditory learner! I am not, and spend most of my class time doing other homework. He spends all 90 minutes in front of the class just talking. He is very knowledgable, but his accent throws me and history is bad enough. Tests are pretty hard and cover a lot of material at one time. Tests are multiple choice.
Mr. Sypris was very knowledgeable. However, he is from Greece so he does have quite an accent. During lectures he tends to get off subject and the tests are sometimes delayed because of this. He is fairly understanding about late homework but the online MindTap homework can take up to 3 hours per chapter. The written exams are nearly impossible.
I actually had Sypris for four classes. PSI 201, HRY 210, HRY 251, HRY 252. The International Relations class was great. His grading is mostly tests, but there are video reports and two simulation games. Those games were stressful, but fun. I only had 8 people in the class, and it lead to some good discussions. Would highly recommend.
Gives you bullet pointed notes and then reads every bullet point as the "lecture". Claims all test questions are found on notes, but unless you memorize every point AND read the book you won't get above a C. Can't get over how boring this class is, I literally had to doodle to keep myself awake.
Highly reccomend not taking any of his classes. Test are extremely difficult. The only good thing is he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. But they are meetings outside of the class time. If you dont do the extra credit you wont pass. You must memorize everything off his notes to pass the tests.
Dont take this class. Unless you can learn by someone talking the entire class period, doesnt write notes on the board or anything, save yourself from taking any classes with this instructor. He is very knowledgeable and knows his stuff, but the tests are hard and its hard to study. Only good thing, he gives extra credit options.
You are graded on 3 exams that are 70+ questions with extreme time limits and 10 video projects for the entire semester and the video projects are one grade worth 10 points for 10 hours of videos. Nice person, but not a very good prof. unless you love history.
Very kind person, and very knowledgeable. You get the study guide 3 weeks in advance and that is what he lectures off of. If you bring up a question you think is unfair on the test and he agrees he will remove it off of the final score. He does tend to go off on a rant and loose track of time, but overall, he was a good teacher.
Tests make up entire grade, you are only given a short amount of time to take exams. All multiple choice questions. Do not take!
very rough class. calls a “lecture” reading the same notes handed to you and writing NOTHING on the board. tends to get very off track. will call you out for staring in to space or doodling. would never recommend.
Took him a ridiculously long time to cover simple topics/ chapters of his curriculum. He spent lots of time talking about things unrelated to class and generally being clueless, while requiring mandatory attendance. He made unwanted political commentary for what seemed like half of the classes. He's old, out of touch, and his teaching methods suck.
