This is the most helpful guy, you'll ever meet. He practically lives on campus b/c he's so busy, but he will still make time to write you letters of rec, or help you out. And plus, his animal imitations are really something!

Well Dr. Burk really loves Bio - that's for sure. Study for all the tests by reviewing the old tests, posted by Burk (online). One negative thing - In my opinion, he has a moderate to heavy amount of arrogance about him.

Dr. Burk is one of the most knowledgeable, friendly and helpful profs at CU. I rate him in my top 5. He really cares about his students and their progress. His classes aren't bad if you attend class and review old exams...arrogant, HARDLY!!

One of the very best professors I had as an undergraduate student. I am now a physician in the medical school at Creighton and still look back to Dr. Burk with awe. Truly an amazing individual and professor.

Obessed with Darwin. We spent 3 months discussing nothing but Darwin. Very poor lecturer. Not helpful to students who are not biology majors. Don't take him unless you want to know what Darwin's favorite food for breakfeast was.

Lecture notes are 120 pgs and we are on pg 40 in Apr! He goes off on so many tangents, you don't know whats imp and whats not. He would never upset anyone...cough, cough. He is a very smart man, but not a good teacher. Too bad he's the only BIO212 prof.

Dr. Burke knows his stuff about Biology, but he isn't good at making it interesting to students. He tends to go too far into detail about things that are unimportant, which is why we're on page 65 of 120 pages of lecture notes with 1 week left.

Definitely obsessed with Darwin. Spends like half the semester talking about Darwin. A lot of the "biology" he teaches seems useless. The old tests are really helpful though.

I took BIO 212 first and this class was a BREEZE. Everyone says that you need to memorize your notes, but really all you have to do is pay a little attention in class. He emphasizes the important concepts so much that you barely need to study. Don't take it too seriously - it's not that bad.

His test questions can be confusing, even when memorizing notes and old tests. Lectures are extremely boring, but pay attention, because a lot of the examples he gives end up as test questions. Go to the review sessions, they do help.

This guy is obsessed with Darwin, you spend an ungodly amount of time on him. Lectures are extremely boring, he sells you the notes (buy them!!!) so that makes it easier. As long as you read your notes, the book, and old tests you should be ok. He tells you exaclty what to read in the book.

Dr. Burk is very enthusiastic about this class, but his lectures are still very boring. The tests aren't bad, a few tricky questions here and there, but overall if you memorize what's in your notes you'll do fine.

Dr. Burk randomly makes jokes that are funny. He gives you the exact readings the test questions are over, gives you the old tests, and is more than happy to help you whenever you want. Anyone who complains about him is just lazy.

about 6 months after I took this class, I emailed Dr. Burk a question about entomology. He emailed me back promptly with a detailed response. He's even a good teacher when you're not in his class anymore.

BORING. you will hear all about evolution and elephant seals. not much else is covered. if you don't pay attention during lecture, you are in trouble for the test. lab is okay. lots of points so one or two bad tests can be fixed.

Well if Darwin was still alive today, I am convinced Bruk would leave his wife and date him. It's sad actually. We spent 2 months talking about Darwin and other trivial stuff while the animal kingdom got half of one class period.

If you do not get an A in this class, and want to go to med school, it may be time to switch to nursing. Burk is an excellent professor. Anyone who complains that he talks too much about Darwin does not understand the extent to which Darwin revolutionized Biology. If you don't get an A, its time to switch majors. period.

Not a bad class, to be honest. Towards the end, the lectures did get a little long winded, but that's just Dr. Burk. Not understanding something is your own fault, as he makes it very clear on the first day of class that YOU are his top priority, and he means it. I still thought 211 was easier, strange as that sounds.

What a nice an weird guy. His jokes are funny if you try to find the corniness in them. Not an easy A, because just as you think you've got it, he gives you the exams with the weirdest questions ever. He tries to help you and that just makes you feel a bit more motivated to go to his class than your other ones. =P

interesting fellow Dr. Burk is. the class would be much better if it didnt have 200+ people in it. seeing him in the distance as a small dot makes paying attention hard. material wasn't bad, wished he could have spent more time on the animal kingdom and less on Darwin. easy class if you work hard...i gave up towards the end.

He really knows his subject which isi good. The materials aren't that bad. You just have to work hard and study the old exams and you will do fine. You don't have to follow the reading schedules because it's really not necessary. Just read the pages he usually give 2 weeks before the test. Make sure you buy his notes so you can follow along.

With such easy material , attendence should not be required.. and assigned seating. Thanks for the middle school treatment. I was not at all impressed. I found the class very easy. Recitation is usually not a mandatory class meeting by the way, That period is meant for questions, which never happened, only more pontification

Burk is a baller! I loved him/ this class. In fact, I loved it so much that I switched my major to bio after taking it. People who complain about Burk should just shut up and actually listen to what he has to say, because it is really interesting, and important for understanding the foundations of Biology.

You don't really have a choice for BIO 212, but just as a warning: he can be a jerk. If you have to talk to him outside of class, be really careful about what you say, actually, try to fit everything into as few words as possible and then leave.

The class is worthless. Of the 120 pages of notes for the class, only 70 were covered. Material is extremely dry, all he cares about is relating EVERYTHING back to Darwin and evolution. It's a shame this class is taught in this format and that there are no alternatives.

The Man is stuck on maintaining a C average in his class. He made his old test available online and then gave tests completely unlike the old ones. His teaching style is aweful and will say the word "um" an average of 150 times per class. (We have counted!!!)

The class is extremely easy. I slept through every class. The tests are almost word for word from his last ones. Dr Burk, however, is the most boring man alive! He said um over 150 times in half the class once. Plus he only covered the animal kindom for half a class period.

You probably will have to take Burk if you take BIO212. Class can be boring, but he is very intelligent. Tests are pretty straight forward if you study the exams from previous years. Going to review sessions before the tests are EXTREMELY helpful. However, be ready to hear about Darwin and Evolution for half the semester. It was pretty boring.

Burk talks about a lot of random stuff that seems trivial. However, much of it appears on the tests which really has no relation to anything of importance in biology. Moreover, he asks a lot of trick questions and tries to make you mess up on his tests. Unfortunately, he is the only professor that teaches BIO 212.

This teacher knows what he's doing. Reading Isn't necessary until he assigns the pages for the test. As long as you study a good deal a B+ isn't that hard to get.

Not that you have any choice with BIO212, but, considering that, Burk's not a bad guy. Very nice and helpful, considering the class size (~200); his lectures are clear, even if the material is rather easy and therefore can get a bit boring. Review the class notes and the old tests online and you'll do fine.

Dr. Burk is a decent teacher and a very nice guy. The main problem with him is a that during his lectures he likes to ramble on about irrelevant material and takes a good portion of the class for announcement, which is kind of unecessary. Go to class and take notes, and review the old tests, thats pretyt much all you can do.

Evolution, Morpheus. Evolution. That's what he lectures about for 85% of the semester. Extremely boring. Tests are a bit difficult; do the readings and you should do fine. He says, "uh" or "um" A LOT. We counted once; 273 times in one class period totaling 9 minutes. Hehe.

Class isn't too difficult. He sometims goes off on random topics and keeps on going so you don't get through much material. Then towards finals, he starts cramming info in. Tests are kind of difficult but he posts old tests for you to study off of.

Dr. Burk is totally weird but sometimes he does impressions of animal mating calls that are pretty entertaining. His tests have a lot of tricky questions (like double negatives and other lame stuff) so you can know the material and still do poorly. DON'T buy the book, he puts the readings online!! Lab is completely pointless, by the way.

Dr. Burk is a nice guy and you dont really have a choice but to take him... but be prepared to teach yourself the material. He goes over so many things and you never know what will be on the tests (which are tough!) BASICALLY MEMORIZE THE PRACTICE TESTS! he tries to trick you so be careful while reading them.

I enjoyed Burk and his class is doable. Tests were tricky, but in a class that big they are supposed to be. He gives you enough material to be ready for them. I plan to take him again later on.

This was the 1st (& now last) class I will take at this school--I was sorely disappointed. EXTREMELY wordy, ridiculous embellishments on his examples. Class doesn't start/end on time. Over e-mail he is very helpful. Don't trust some of his info because he says "I heard" a lot or just make up numbers or facts--not acceptable! Most frustrating class.

I couldn't disagree with the previous post more. Dr. Burk is great and his stories are very interesting. Yes, a 3 hour class gets long but that's true for any class. The tests were very fair. If you go to class and take notes you will do extremely well. I loved this course.

Friendly guy who is an expert in his field, but I'm a humanities major and science is my Achilles' heel. Therefore I found this class to be very hard and boring. Test questions are ridiculous and irrelevant (a la what year did Darwin first get laid). If you are not a science major, save yourself time and take astronomy instead.

Good professor overall. Takes long time to explain concepts=don't get through most of the material, but ex. are good. Attend review sessions-will re-explain anything&tell you what kinds of questions to expect. Follow posted exams from previous years, some questions are identical. I enjoyed him!

Moves very slowly, but he explains things well. You could probably pass his tests just by reading the notes you buy at the beginning. His tests seem easy but they are very steeply graded so don't blow them off! He tries to be funny and is totally into the material.

Reading some of these comments significantly reduces my faith in the CU student body. Dr. Burk is one of the best in his field. He was a Rhodes scholar and studied with Richard effing Dawkins for years. It's pretty sad that so many students throw away the opportunity to learn from experts like Dr. Burk.

Dr. Burk is literally amazing! Not only is he brilliant and knows his stuff and how to teach it, he is funny as well! He enjoys Far Side comics that he shares AND explains why they are funny which is very entertaining. Burk's tests can be tricky. He gives 10 questions from the book but tells u what pages to read. Way Better than Vinton!!!

Best Biology teacher ever. You don't even need to read the book he gives you the page numbers and information you will need for the test. Everything he does is online slides and information about everthing. He updates the grades faster than any teacher on campus, when you go ask him for help he won't just spend 5 minutes but hours to help you out.

tells us the class average is a 73% on a test and thinks thats about where it should be. just shows you the kind of grade you could potentially get. pretty boring in class. obsessed with evolution. that's all we learned about. gets pretty tricky on tests. Prof. Burke is a pretty nice guy. His lectures tend to be boring but he can be funny at times. Tests aren't hard at all as long as you put the time and effort into your studies. Did poorly on the first test but then studied better for the next and easily did well.

Long-winded and boring but passionate about biology (esp. evolution). Don't do reading until he posts testable reading pgs on Blueline, then just read those. Take detailed lecture notes (include every example he says) and memorize practice exam questions online - they show up almost word-for-word on each and every test.

We have about 5 weeks left of class and the only thing we've talked about so far is EVOLUTION. And I think we have about a week more of it. but if you like that stuff than take this class. If you wanna learn more, take a different teacher. not too hard.

Instead of calling this class "General Biology", it should be called "Evolutionary Biology," because that's all we seem to talk about. He's a nice dude, great guy to work with. But the class is just boring. I can't even handle staying awake. But he's a nice guy, and he's very, very helpful outside of class.

Burk is a very nice man. He also seems to be very helpful at class or even during tests when something seems unclear. HOWEVER, if you actually want to learn something more than evolution, take cullum! I am probably going to be screwed for my mcat because we didn't learn anything besides evolution! I wish I took the other teachers...

Makes evolution fascinating. Five tests and a short research paper which is graded easily. If you're thinking of going to medical school, you might want to think about another professor; evolution took up all but 3 weeks of the semester. But if you're looking for an interesting class on a cool topic, take Burk. Not the bloody elephant seals again!

I think a lot of people really don't appreciate Dr. Burk. He is extremely knowledgeable in what he teaches. He does however, spend a lot of time over evolution. Pretty funny guy, his lectures are dry but he really does try to make you enjoy the class. Nothing too hard,just study the old test, and his notes and you should be able to get an A.

Easiest professor. Same topic all the time (evolution). Dumb and easy! Take it for an easy grade. Study only one subject a few minutes each day and you'll ace the class. It isn't brain surgery; just evolution.

Unless you love going into extremely pointless detail over every single topic, do not take him. He basically tries to trick you on the tests and his lectures put me to sleep every day. If you actually want to learn something, take someone else.

He has completely changed from the previous years. His test this semester-other than the first one-are not a reflection of his previous teachings. It makes him that much harder to study for. Take any other teacher but him!

Lectures were boring most of the time and I had a hard time paying attention. He records all of the lectures so you can rewatch them. His tests were over a lot of material so that made them hard. Your only grades are tests, the miderm, and the final. The class wasn't great, but wasn't horrible.

His class was pretty straight-forward and his posted prior-year tests pretty much reflect what you will be expected to know on the tests you will be taking. It is definitely difficult to recover your grade if you make some mistakes, so start out strong and finish strong if you can

Dr. Burk is fantastic. He really cares about his students and tells hilarious Biology related stories. He is super straightforward about his expectations and he practically gives you the test questions by giving last years tests. The man hasn't changed his style in 30 years of teaching. its perfected. His lectures are very basic and boring, but you must pay attention to do well. I would recommended hand written notes. Your laptop WILL DISTRACT YOU. Bare through the lectures taking notes on what he says = get an A. tests are similar to old ones.

he is better than vinton. get ready to fall asleep because HE GOES OFF ON A TANGENT ALL THE TIME!!!!.... corny jokes..classes are extremely boring. you are allowed to miss 10 lectures...which are all recorded online. it is a tough class. 1st exam average was 78% and second was 76%...so get ready to study...take him because he is better than vinton

Perhaps one of the most overrated professors. You just don't learn that much about bio. He gets off on tangents and the class is mainly over evolution. Due to his popularity his sections are over 230 students. It is just too large of a section for me. Class consists of 3 exams and a final. The average is around 75% on all of them. Ok not Great

People complain too much about Dr. Burk. I really liked his class, I learned a ton. Don't be dumb about this class. Stay off of facebook and shopping sites during lectures and study a lot for the tests. An A is a good amount of work, but very manageable. Burk is a good teacher and he is very helpful too. Go in for office hours.

Dr. Burk loves, loves, loves evolution, so hopefully you do, too. I didn't like how he just read off power points; he put me to sleep because his voice is pretty monotone; and you have to space out your studying (aka don't cram the night before). Definitely go in an talk to him if you are struggling with the class though; he is a nice guy.

MUST READ: Burk must have underwent some sort of dark transition between 2012 and 2013 because his tests are NOT as easy as they used to be. This is the general consensus among students. Class average was a C and unless you're Charles Darwin himself you'll have to work very hard for an A. +1 for his sweater selection tho.

Dr. Burk isn't as easy as this site says. His tests became harder and cover more material. 3 tests and a final, and my only advice would be to review the old exams as they help a lot. Prepare to work very hard.

Dr. Burk is a great professor! Sometimes his lectures can put you to sleep early in the morning; they're on BlueLine. It's true he loves evolution. TEST questions: 50 points (10 text 40 lectures) STUDY LECTURES. Dr. Burk loves butterflies! Go to his office hours for help! He is such a great guy! If I could take him for all my bio classes, I would!

All I have learned the whole semester is evolution and butterflies. Dr. Burk tests on things he never talks about in class. He tends to ramble during lectures. His tests are very hard, everyone that I know has a C or a D in the class. It's very hard to get an A. If you can do not take this class. He has 4 tests per semester and a final.

Dr. Burk is a great professor, but his tests are pretty tough. Pay attention in class and go over the lecture notes. For the exams, just go over the old exam questions and you should be find. Also he goes over evolution most of the lectures since his specialty is evolution. But overall he is a great professor and I would take him again.

The book readings have nothing to do with the lectures, but are essential to passing the tests. If you don't read, you will NOT do well! The reading can be extremely dense as well so start early. Lectures are REALLY boring. There are TONS of specific examples that you HAVE to know for the exams. Exams are extremely tricky due to his wording.

confusing, lectures are long, when you ask questions he is still unclear, his tests are extremely wordy (cost me more than half my missed points), I could easily fall asleep in class, he goes off topic a lot in lectures, its extremely true he loves evolution, we even talked about how Charles Darwin married his 1st cousin, not sure if take again

If you do poorly on any of the exams (4 100 points 200 point final), it's incredibly difficult to get your grade up. However, all lectures are recorded and available to watch at anytime. Because of this, attendance is NOT critical as long as you watch the recordings. Everything seems easy in principle but there is a lot of content to absorb.

Professor Burk is an oustanding professor. Class was extremely straight forward with a powerpoint lecture setup. He didn't just read from the slides, though, but had them up for reference as he clarified themes and concepts. If you have any concerns or difficulties, he's more than happy to help you outside of class. I can't give him enough praise.

Burk absolutely loves what he does, and you can tell so when he lectures. I personally enjoyed the class. If you are confused, he is so helpful during office hours and is so informative about the subject. You get what you put into the class, it isn't difficult to get a good grade but you have to work for it.

Dr. Burk is a great teacher. His lectures are very informative and you learn a ton. A lot of people don't like him because he focuses on evolution quite a bit, however evolution in itself is a very interesting topic. Dr. Burk is has a good sense of humor and makes his lectures very interesting, and amusing. The tests are also incredibly easy.

When I took this class, it was the first time it was offered. There are only two big assignments, a 12 page mid-term and a 5 page single-spaced research paper. I learned nothing and the lectures don't help you write the papers. Also there are weekly 1-2 page reflections papers due every week over the readings. Great teacher, but a tough class.

Dr. Burke is a great teacher that knows a lot about his subject. There are only 5 grades per semester (1 for each exam) so every exam is crucial for your grade. He gives a lot of opportunities for you to do well like practice tests, review sessions (on his own time), and recorded lectures. USE THEM. MAKE FLASH CARDS. you'll be fine.

I love Dr. Burk. His classes can sometimes be long but he's really passionate about it. He is pretty straightforward on what is going to be on the test and gives you a lot of help in getting prepared for them. Burk focuses very much on Evolution and if you compare where you are at with the other Bio classes you will feel very behind. His exams are decently hard but he will emphasize specific items and ideas during lectures that will be on the exam. The exams are the only grades so if you don't take tests well this could be a rough class.

Easier than other bio classes (cause he only covers evolution) BUT it's boring. He is very confusing to listen to even though he knows what he is talking about. Class is only based on four exams and a final. His exams are tough and the easiest way to lose points is if you don't do the assigned readings for the exams. REVIEW WHAT HE COVERS EVERY DAY

He loves evolution, and that's why lectures aren't easy to listen to all the time, HOWEVER, that's the only negative. I had to be honest and that's it. Otherwise if you study for this class like chemistry, then you'll get an A and its really interesting, unless you've taken IB or AP bio. If you're not a bio major, you might not like this class.

You have to memorize verbatim what the professor says. you also have to be very great at test taking and multiple choice tests. The information doesn't really make sense, and this isn't really a genbio course it is Evolution... Professor Burk IS really knowledgeable and kind but the class doesn't really make sense and really hurts your GPA

I LOVED Burk. First semester of college and he was my favorite professor. He does spend a lot of time talking about evolution, but it is his passion and most professors teach what they know best. Cracks jokes that are hilarious. Study the online tests and powerpoint and a B is attainable. If you miss class, all the lectures are online. Great class.

Dr. Burk is a good teacher but he really, really loves evolution. If you are taking this class as a Pre Med student you should definitely put him as your last choice. You will not be prepared for the MCAT. But at least I know Evolution via Natural selection.

Burk has 10 questions on each test that come from the assigned reading sections that he doesn't talk about in class. But those are the only hard questions. Just pay attention to the examples he gives (always on the test). Pretty funny guy, easy class. Best gen bio teacher available.

Burke's the man. He can seem boring because 90% of his class is evolution (since he's a genius in entomology and evolution). Just read the page she assigns when it comes to reading the book. Read it early and read twice. Go over each lecture the same day and review them twice more each a week before the test. Doing this, you will pass with a 95%+

He's aight for gen bio organismal and population, but please do not take him for animal behavior, unless you absolutely love ethology or psychology. He's a genius when it comes to animal behavior and therefore his exams are much harder than gen bio. Although his lectures are boring, he records them on bluecast, which is why people skip class.

I love Dr. Burk! I am literally studying for one of his tests right now and as I watch the Blue-cast lectures I can't help but appreciate him! He is funny and makes his classes enjoyable. He has a heavy passion for evolution so this class is very enjoyable. We only have 3 tests (and a final) and a 10 page term paper. Homework is minimal and easy.

Dr. Burk is probably my favorite biology professor I have had at Creighton so far. His lectures are really amusing sometimes because he likes to act out a lot of his lecture. His exams are all true/false from lectures/reading from book but you get the hang of it. He also offered an extra credit paper that would replace your lowest exam score.

Pop into his office & discuss how you think your dog has an emotional intelligence and you will quickly find yourself writing an extra credit paper about animal emotion research for your bio class. The lectures are information heavy, but stick to the information on the slide. He is extremely knowledgeable about animal behavior. He provides exams from previous years that give you an idea for what to expect. Everything is short answer, though it isn't any tougher than multiple choice. We are also graded on many ~30 min. weekly worksheets.

Take this for your 500 level class! We had 5 journal analysis assignments that were easy, a 3 page intro paper with 10 minute presentation, a 10 page paper with a 20 minute presentation and 3 exams. Very lenient when grading the papers and presentations and they werent super hard to do. Easy A!

Dr. Burk's class is deceptively hard. Everyone said it was easy, but I did not find it that way! The exams are all short answer and the class is very memorization based! Only take this course if you are passionate about this subject, otherwise, you will struggle! Although I hated the class, Dr. Burk is very accessible outside of class! There is EC!

Lectures off his slides the entire class. 4 exams all of them based on the slides and none of his funny side tangents. 1 independent research paper and 1 group paper + presentation. The lowest he gave on the presentations was a 94 and like an 85 on the papers. Follow his old exams and complete his simple weekly reading questions. Easy A
