Flexible with due dates. Easy on grading. However, his lectures are realy bad. Confuses you. Need to study yourselve.
Great Teacher!!! My favorite for Chem class!
Due to all thepositive remarks I heard about Dr. Fickel I took him. Man, was it a mistake. Although hes smart and can not teach. You wont be able to get a better score than an 82 no matter how hard u study.
OMG! THIS TEACHER WON THE BORINGEST TEACHER AWARD. HIS VOICE PUTS YOU TO SLEEP. HE CANNOT TEACH WELL. HIS TESTS ARE DIFFICULT. HE HAS NO SENSE OF HUMOR WHAT-SO-EVER!
Great Chem teacher. He explains everything till the last detail.
Had him for 101 and he's impossible but I heard he's really good for 68...Not only does Dr. Fickle have no teaching abilities, but his test are exteremly hard. He's smart but he can't teach...DONT TAKE HIM FOR 101
His class was challenging but with attention and effort, you can at least get a B in that class.
He is the most boring teacher I've ever had.If I didn't know the basics of chemistry, when he went over the reviews I would never figure out what I already know from his teachings. Drifts off topics, loves to talk about Physics istead.
He's very helpful. Just ask.
He knows his chemistry, but he isn't really good in explaining how he got from one point to another in the chem equations. Other than that, just work hard and do extra work to fully understand and you'' do fine
If I hadn't had a good high school chemistry teacher I would have never done well in this class. He's very confusing and you need to study on your own. He is intelligent and nice so you can approach him with ease.
Great teacher, not the most dynamic lecturer, but makes up for it by explaining concepts repetitively ensuring that students grasp the concepts. Recommend this professor. Besides he is nice.
He can't teach. He's a bore, doesn't care to explain in any methodical manner...he's an idiot! Run and for god sake don't buy HIS book...it's an unintelligible piece of crap.
Man, this guys is a idiot, does not know how to teach and why is he teaching. He sure is a to much of a smart ass, but good for noting. GOod luck taking his class you will need it to pass.
Very nice guy, he will spend time with you until you get it, has alot of patience, If your willing to put in your part, hell prepare you nicely for the next chemistry classes.
Very good teacher.Teaches you enough material for his class and more.I don't agree with others ratings.Yes,he sometime goes faster in important material. But you can apporch him later, ask him about it,he will explain again untill you get it.Chem is a hard,so you need to study.Got A with B effort.
Never take him. Average score on tests for the whole entire class 53. His tests are very hard, he likes to do "twists" as he calls them, on his midterms. Tests are unfair. Not the level covered in class.
Easy like Sunday morning! I was scared of Chem before his class and finished with like 99%! If you can't pass his 51 class, you may want to rethink your major!
He is a nice man, & very approachable. I am A/B student & I am doing poor in his class. If you have questions, he'll help you out, but his tests are horrible. I study & do the lab practice questions, just as he said, do hw, but get 45-75 on his exams. His exam questions are not what his quiz questions are. He does reviews, but doesn't use on test.
Dr. Fickle knows his chemistry! His exams are tough, but he his very fair with grading. Do the assigned problems in the text, and you'll do fine.
This guy has to be one of the worst professors out there.
study hard with him and everything will be fine. Its a good foundation that you really want with this class. Figure out how he wants you to approach the material and youll do well. Take and keep your notes well and organized, and overstudy for his exams, he will push you, but he is a fair grader. Show up for the discussion groups and ask questi
Disagree with hard test comments. I got an A during winter session while rarely coming on lecture only days and buying only the lab h/o book. However, EXTREMELY boring. Put me to sleep on 2 cups of coffee.
pretty easy but very boring
so i've only seen this guy once...really BORING...bORING..boring. but he seems nice but i mean how can you be so redundant!
He goes too fast on lectures, is extremely boring, and his tests are difficult. Avoid taking this teacher.
i know chem is supposed to be boring, but he's just over the limit BORING!!! i wouldn't recommend anyone to take him
i didnt know anythign about chem. Taught myself everything with his help. Very good teacher. Tests are diffucult (says whats on the test)...labs are easy (gives all answers)...drops 1 test...curves...and no quizzes. Funny guy as well. Lectures are confusing...just ask alot of question. He will answer them without any problem. Very fair...good luc
I thought he was a great Chemistry teacher. He has an overt passion for the science and that comes through in his lectures. His tests are difficult and come directly from the lecutre (so go to class!) The whole grade is based off of quizes, tests, and labs. It is important to study and not miss any labs. Good class!
Well, there's really only 2 major complaints I have. First off, he jumps ahead way too much (at one point he was covering the final material that was going to be on the test after the next one!), even though he could be reviewing for the test. Also, his tests are insane, did every prob. from the book, and still bombed.
Lecture follows no order or method. Doest prepare for tests, although they are not hard. Have to study much from the book, but chemistry is hard anyways.
Ok, I suggest for someone to skip a semester of Chem. than to take it with him. Surprises keep reappearing on tests, things that he never covered nor the book ever covered. He's a nice man yet boring but your better off w/o this class, unless you really trully need a Chem class.
OHMYGOD! I hated the way he taught the class. I dropped at the end of the sem. with a W. Insanely difficult and unorganized with lectures. Tests are timed and we technically don't have enough time to complete the questions even if you know them. Test problems don't come from the book and if you complain he will say that well..I expect you to know h
jessus.. don't evr take 101 with him.... If you have never dropped a class before, most likely you will with him... Test questions are too hard... more than half the class dropped... and youre already behind on the first day. highly not recommended. chem 68 was a breeze with him and you think you're so smart and ready for chem101 with him...but no.
Dr. Fickel, if you do read these.I bet you don't take it to heart.Student's obviously need 2practice the problems themselves. your teaching methods are too unclear. really. the book isn't clear also. All I got to say is that you should practice the dfficult prob's that are going to be on the test with the class more often and go slower on lectures.
Dr. Fickel is a really nice guy whose chemical knowledge is vast. His lectures do not always follow a clear train of thought, but if you're in need of help, he's extremely approachable. My only real complaint is the "A decider" questions on his tests, which you cannot prepare for. Curved grades on tests, and lab reports can be turned in very late.
extremely boring without any boundaries. just when u think he's stopped with the lecture, he goes off topic and talks a whole lot more.
A fair teacher for a difficult subject. Although boring at times, he is nice and helpful. Curves the final grade. can turn in labs late. took him in the winter and did pretty well. dont't be afraid to ask him problems to do in class.
Whew. I took this class in Winter Intersession, and it was pretty darn tough. But Mr. Fickel always went over any questions we had, and graded on a curve at the end, which helped a lot of students. He wants everyone to do well, and is a sweet guy. But if you aren't a chem genius, then definitely read the textbook and do the problems in it.
Prof. Fickel has a wealth of knowldge about chemistry and about life. His lectures can be hard to follow through sometimes, but if your a good student who participates, attends class, and takes notes, and reads the book, believe you'll do just fine! p.s.very approachable and has somewhat of a sense of humor!!tests can be quite hard, no labs quizes!

I dropped because he would run to his car and take off as soon as class was over. During our 1st lab he made it clear that he must stamp our lab for credit but he took off without telling anyone 45 minutes BEFORE class was scheduled to end. About 10 of us were there wondering where he was. Office locked, car gone and he wasn't a good lecturer. F-
Well... I just finished his class a couple of days ago. Thank god it's over! I agree with the other comments, yes he is boring. I basically had to teach myself everything and had to get a lot of help from a friend or two. If you're good at teaching yourself new material, you'll do fine in the class. Tests are rather difficult tho.
He really knows his subject. Very detailed oriented. You MUST devote A LOT of time to understand. Cool guy but impossible tests.
Dr. Fickel really understands what he teaches, and the only complaint I've ever heard from people is that he talks or goes too fast. However, he IS approachable, and he's really cute in a dorky way. It is a demanding class for those not the least bit familiar with chemistry.

Dr. Fickel is the most boring professor I’ve ever had in my college career, he is monotone 'n he goes through da lectures 2 fast. I have to agree he has a wealth of knowledge about chemistry however this doesn’t mean he can teach. He needs to go work at a lab not teach. I’m glad my class is over, that was the hardest A I've ever gotten, GOOD LUCK!
Excellent teacher for 68 but DO NOT take him for 101 and 102.
Dr. Fickel is an average teacher. Lectures are usually bland but occasionally his sense of humor pops out. He's a nice guy and will help you if you have questions. Do all the homework problems properly or you will not pass the class. You must also be comfortable with units of measurement, algebra, and your calculator. 2nd and 3rd tests are hard
his class is easy. just listen to his lectures & take good notes. i was nervous at first because his class seemed too difficult but later on, it turned out to be an easy class. he lets you turn in lab reports late & also goes over exam/quiz questions. if you have questions, he's willing to explain until you get it. he also has a sense of humor!
He has bad hand writing so it's bit hard to copy the lecture from the board. he talks little 2 fast, u may miss what he said. but he's very educated, helpful and understanding. His tests are little hard but resonable. he tells jokes almost every lecture and they are hillarious! Chem wasn't my fav. subject. but I love chem after takin his class.
I took him for chem 68 and I loved the class I'm taking him again for chem 101. Take his class. he makes chem easier than anyone else.
This guy is the moooooooooooooooost boooooooooooooooooooring teacher on earth. His voice puts u asleep. Don't take him, you'll hate the class.
This is great professor .
IF you like chemistry, take him .
He talks fast. Some dry jokes that were funny to me! Do the problems in textbook and you will be fine. He tells you he doesn't make us memorize unnecessary things. People says he is boring but I don't know how he can make atoms & electrons fun. Make sure you do the problems in his textbook and do it along the lecture so you don't fall behind.
He is a VERY nice guy and very cute. LOVED his class and loved his jokes.
Though the exams are difficult, Professor Fickel is a great teacher for those who want to pursue chemistry as a career. Chemistry, frankly, is not my calling, though those who want to study chemistry should take him; he's very nice, intelligent, and helpful. Practicing problems on the textbook is a key way to practice and perform well on exams.
Do the practice probs in the text. In class don't try to take notes - he lectures pretty fast and his writing is like chicken scratch; but rather - listen and follow along and do the probs with your calculator. Labs are easy; drops 3 quizzes but no tests are dropped. Don't be lazy and fall behind - or you will not pass.
Don?t bother to read or copy from the board. When he writes H2O (3 symbols) it looks like a single letter K from the Kellogg?s box. His comments go far deep into science that is irrelevant to the CHEM101. The day before the test you won?t get a study guide, instead you will get bombarded with the new material?.
This class ruined my GPA. I should have dropped like the person below me. It takes real dedication to well in this class. Outside tutoring probably would have helped. I feel like the material could be explained more clearly. Really, its like he is trying to trick you...
XLNT teacher although he goes so fast in lecture. His text is the best becuz can get an A with/o go to class. I took him for 68 and it was super easy, and yes! i practiced all the problems in the text. if you can't handle this class, dont even think to go on chem 101 or farther cuz things'll get real ugly. he goes very easy on labs. very nice prof.
Strongly advise to take his Chem 68. He has his own book which has solutions to all problems - very, very helpful. Professor is a very intelligent and has great humor - you will enjoy his class if you are intelligent person too. Rates very fair.
Got an A during summer session but had to study. Do his html problems and you will be fine. You do not need the textbook at all. Do his problems over and over again. Take him over any other chem 51 teacher if you can. Not an easy class but if you put in the time you will get at least a B!
I don't recommend him at all. I got an A in my chem 68 class, and I'm receiving a C in this class. His tests are extremely tricky and nothing he says is relative to what the tests are on. Stay away if you can!
Overall, he is good if you are an independent student. He helps if anything is unclear. All you need to do is read the text and do the problems and you should be good. It is not hard, just time-consuming. He is kind of funny in a weird way too. Overall I would recommend him for Chem 68.
Good teacher, but if you depend on the teacher to help you a lot this is not the class for you. I took his internet Chem 068 class and passed with a B, tricky tests but he is easy if you understand the material yourself and do what you are asked.
Terrible, terrible, terrible. He knows chemistry, he does not know teaching. Has promised a curve twice (68 and 101), then announces at the end of the semester that there will not be one. Does nothing about cheating even when it's pointed out to him DURING an exam. No guidance what so ever regarding exam material. Very tricky, hard exams.
First off do not take this professor! To put in simple words we started with over 40 students in the class and only 13 remain! He is hard and really just does not teach well! His lectures are extremely boring and pointless his labs he always leaves so when you have questions its pointless because he is never around to ask them! DONT TAKE HIM!
His class is easier than the other chemistry instructors. His main problem is about cheating. He does nothing about it. Even when it is pointed out to him that it's happening in front of him. However complaints about his tests being hard or tricky, they're not. They are straight forward and much easier than Dr. Milligan's. Simply, just study.
Dr. Fickel lectures like he is hyper on caffeine, but if you have prepared for class then they make perfect sense. Just read the chapter before the lecture and work on the practice problems and you'll have no problem. If you don't prepare you'll sink. Tests are straight forward, if you can do the math then you'll excel in his class.
He is a good teacher , Really helpful once you need him, he respects his student. the only issue is that he doesnt really have a lecture and since the course is hybrid you are kind of by your own but he will answer all questions passionately
Nice guy but SERIOUSLY? He's REALLY confusing, has his own book online which is nice but he refers to his book and the one that's required for the class and always gets the 2 confused. Has a tendency to grumble and go off topic. He's never around during his office hrs. No structure to his teaching, tests are tricky.. the class went from 34 to 12.
I took his online class and it was a big mistake. I hadn't had chemistry for many years and i felt completely lost, I didn't feel that this class prepared me for chem 101. Hes a nice guy but stay away if you need extra support from your teacher. The lectures, practice experiments and tests are all so far removed from one another, it was infuriating
He is truly a caring and nice individual. He cares about the students and if they understand the material. YOU MUST STUDY! JUST LIKE ANY CLASS. Chemistry is not an easy subject but Dr. Fickel has a great sense of humor and very passionate about the subject. He is a must take! Enjoyed the pleasure of being in his class
He is very knowledgeable. He has setup the online course with his textbook (e-version). No surprises with grading, test, quizzes & lab work (syllabus). He is difficult to follow at times. The online course does have errors/bugs in the site. His test are difficult. I do not recommend this professor or online course if you are new to chemistry.
He is a nice professor but I did not understand him most of the time.
Speaks way too quick, jumps around everywhere, if you don't know anything about chemistry, expect to learn little to nothing in his class. You will need to read your textbook and teach yourself. Test are difficult, puts a lot of trick questions in them. Good luck
This was a hybrid onlinelab class. The professor writes his own text and provides it for free, which is great. The professor that taught the lab portion was confusing and rushed, and clearly did not communicate with the Dr. Fickel. The online portion was also confusing, with conflicting and misleading info. Don't take unless you can teach yourself
Professor Fickel is such a nice man! However, this was not an easy class. I took the hybrid version, and, as with most hybrid classes, you must teach the material to yourself by reading the book and solving problems. The exams were on the tougher side but definitely doable. Overall, I think this was a decent hybrid class. I enjoyed it.
hybrid class No need to buy textbook he has created his own book/manual lots of test, 3 exams unexpected discussions that need to be answered, kinda like a pop quiz of 1 question. I think I asked to many questions that eventually he stop answering my questions ;D He gives you the material but its up to your to read and understand it.
Took during summer. learn 99% on your own via tutoring etc. his textbook will cause damage, don't bother with it. quiz questions are extremely difficult. oddly enough every test, even the final, is EXACT same questions from quiz with EXACT same answers in EXACT same order. Good news: no busy work and solo study prepares you for next class
Dr. Fickel is highly respected person. I met with him only once for final exam. I took Chem 68 and 101 online hybrid class. Very understanding and easy. He is very caring and inspirational for students. He is a real gentleman by outfit and by personality both. For final , if you understand the materials and formula , you will get easy A.
Should not be offered online, especially with no recorded lectures, lecture notes, or any assistance whatsoever - literally 0 instruction. The material itself is understandable when actually taught, but on your own, it is nearly impossible. This almost ruined chemistry for me. Still got an A but I feel about 10% comfortable with the material.
NO LECTURE, NO GUIDANCE, NO RECORDINGS, NO EXTRA CREDIT, ZERO FEEDBACK, HOMEWORK DOES NOT PREPARE YOU FOR EXAMS, AND LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST, THERE IS NO ROOM FOR ERROR. HE IS UNORGANIZED, ONLINE DUE DATES ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE WITH NO REGULARITY. IF YOU'RE OK WITH SELF TEACHING-OK, OTHERWISE, HELL NO!! I FEEL SO UNPREPARED FOR CHEM 102 :(
I actually know less chemistry after taking his online class. Couldn't get into any other so took online both for 68 and 101. Valley's online chem is terrible. I can no longer be a chem major because I know nothing, but I have an A in chem 101. yay! I learned nothing in 68 and would have died in any other 101. Now I'll change major and finish 102OL
You need to read the text if you take his online class. And use the resources he gives. No one seems to notice that he puts videos and resources if you bother to check. No offense, but if you sign up for an online class, expect to be doing independent work often. And when I go to his office hours in person, he is so kind and helpful. Good luck.
I took Chemistry 51 online, all I gotta say is be prepared to learn on your OWN. It was difficult but the exams/final and quizzes were all open book! I managed to go to tutoring but the final is online and it consists of all the same quiz/exams questions. Hopefully it wont change later on, if your a chemistry major dont take it, but easy class .
Creates the online course before the semester starts and is resistant to making changes. Gives the excuse that he is unable to change settings for the modules and quizzes, but occasionally does it anyways. Responds to messages fairly quick, but don't expect to get the answer you want.
BEWARE on taking any online Chemistry with Professor Fickel !!! If you take him online be advised that all you have to is teach yourself. And will have to physically show up to school and take the final. I had to go to tutoring and get the help I needed, overall his class was okay but I suggest you to take the physical class preferably !!!
Hybrid/5 week: Our lab professor was awesome, but the professor that handles the online instruction part (lab professor and online instructor rarely communicate with each other) is kind of frustrating. All tests and quizzes were online M.C., but once you take them you can't see the questions you got wrong, so good luck studying off them...
I had him for both online lecture and for lab in spring 2017. He was very helpful and a sweetheart. Although he doesn't teach the labs in person anymore. Many of bad reviews come from others who only had him online. But in person he's a great teacher. He curved grades at end 80%> A, 75> B, 65> C. Below 65% you wouldn't pass.
he is good, always answer every question we have, I took online course with him, but never take Kokabi for the lab portion he can ruin your grades.
He is good, took a hybrid class with lecture online and lab in class. He is well respected and quick responder to any questions or concern, but never ever take Kokabi for your lab portion,he will ruin all the work you have done for the semester. And btw, for us professor didn't curve the grades 87% is B
He's really chill, chem51 online is all over the place. The online class on canvas is all over the place. He has so much mistakes its annoying. All the exams and quizzes are all online and the final as well. So its really easy, I do recommend the class, but you have to teach yourself. Got an A, but still need help with chem51. Go to tutoring.
Hes really chill, everything from quizzes , midterms , and final was online. The easiest Chemistry professor out their!!! U do NOT learn anything tho !!! U have to teach yourself . But hey I got an A in Chem 101.
His Online Chem101 is all over the place, but its dueable. Easy A , he claims the final is in class, but its online. He changes last minute, his quizzes and diccusions , midterms are all online.
Worst professor ever, people do yourself a favor do not take him. The in class mid term and the in class final will ruin your life! This whole highbrid at Valley is very Unorganized , stay away from this course. This class has two professors in which makes the class annoying and not up to date with the assignments and lecture. DoNOT take pleAse !
The professor wants all students to fail. He doesNOT curve grading! So u better RUN students.
Took him for the hybrid chem 101. The MOST unorganized class I've ever had. The due dates to everything are unclear so you never know whats due. anytime you reach out to him about a grade he just responds with "it wont matter in the end" and doesnt help students at all. the midterm and final are during lab which was horrible
Gives students the grade he wants rather than the grade they deserve. 0 organization, 0 care for his students and most of all 0 for his communication skills. No textbook, no videos, youre on your own when it comes to learning chemistry. Lab portion had little to no impact on final grade and was not synced with the homework in the lecture at all.
Okay so, all answers to his Quizzes and Exams are searchable online. His Final Exam isn't so easily found online. He did give a very generous curve at the end. I didn't even attempt to study at all and still found passed with an A. As long as you have a good lab instructor, you'll get an A. If you're looking to go into higher Chemistry, RUN AWAY.
I took this course as a compressed 6-week course, so it was hard. The prof. wrote the textbook so you don't have to pay for it, but there are TYPOs! Bummer when you are working through a problem at then you realize the book is wrong. The professor uses online test, but if you cannot show your work and one sig fig wrong means it is wrong.
If you take this course online, you will need to learn the material on your own. Upside is, taking quizzes and tests online is a lot easier than taking them in class. The most important thing to remember with your lab work is to put down the right sig figs! Beware the sig figs my friends! Beware!
This Prof is the most unorganized and most unfair prof i have ever taken. He favors those that are failing to pass them with a C rather than those who do all the work and put the effort to remain with a B. His curve did nothing for those who had a B, we remained getting a B. Those that should've failed received a C. You teach yourself chemistry.
Took professor Fickel for spring 2020 and must say it was a pleasure to have been part of his class. While the class itself was challenging, especially after all classes went remotely due to the corona virus, it wasn't too bad. Professor Fickel is extremely fair and reasonable with assignments and always quick to address any questions or concerns.
Had to transition to a full online course. Very fair grading considering the circumstances. Rounded our grade generously. Wouldnt take again though
Too much talking, not enough teaching. Fickel is a nice guy and is very understanding and lenient. However, you are expected to teach this course yourself. I know we had to transition due to covid but there was no help and zoom was only once a week in which he just babbled. I barely know anything about chem now that I'm done, but at least I passed!
Tookan him for Summer. The class was not that hard, but his questions that use sig figs will mess you up if you dont do it right. Quiz and test multiple choice and same questions from quiz on test. You will not know what the correct answer is and that is what was hard for me I need to know what I did wrong. His responses are not the great either.
I'm so lucky to have had Dr. Fickel as a professor. I'm doing a post-bacc now but I was originally a pre-nursing student and took his chem class. It was definitely hard, but if you're lucky enough to have him for in-person lectures (when the pandemic subsides), he does SUCH a good job of explaining concepts that would otherwise be so confusing!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! This professor is extremely hard, zoom classes were not mandatory because anything he taught had nothing to do with tests/quizzes. He is too strict with correct answers. Your grade is based off of your quizzes and exams. If you care about your grade, do not take this class!
this is a self-taught class lectures are come as you please. Not a good professor at all.
This class was something else... Most of the grade will be test reliant (of course). No EC. Go through the modules and learn through youtube. Practice, practice, practice and you will be fine. Curves grade at the end of the semester. Ended with 85%, got an A. Recommend to form a study group! You guys will bond because of this class. XD
Here is why you should NOT take this professor : 1. Self taught majority of subject 2. Incredibly tough on grading material. Ex) Answer 132.01 VS 132.02 is wrong. 3. Does not show quizzes / tests after completion so no way to learn from your mistakes. All repeatable work is averaged so you can't mess up. 4. Quizzes / Exams are fill in answer not MC
This is the most confusing class I've ever taken. It's all over the place. The zooms are pointless because he does a lot of talking but its never anything directly about the content you're gonna be tested and quizzed on. He's super nice but he's just not a good teacher at all. You basically have to YouTube everything and teach yourself everything.
This was a 5 week course, it is intense. He is very nice and knows the material well. It is an online class so expect to teach yourself no way around it. The lab reports are a pain and sigfigs really mess you up. But totally doable 3 exams, 12 quizzes and lab reports. Plus free textbook and some stuff is online.
If you are planning on taking him please think again. Within the first week I almost dropped his class cause I started having physical pains from all the stress he gave me. Even though teaching is his job he doesn't know how to do it. You will be stuck doing the lessons on your own and even when you answer right he will grade you down.
Chegg is your bestfriend. Very difficult class coming from a straight A student I had a 86 and ended with an A. 5 Tests final is super easy, however tests are hard. He curves at the end because almost no one has over a 90. Over 85 is A over 75 is a B.
Best teacher ever. I would take this class if I need to. He really help me a lot. He teach so good. The class is difficult but if you ask for help you can get a good grade.
There are meetings; however, they aren't forced b/c they're recorded. They're short and concise, so I suggest viewing them as they're relevant to the weekly assignments. Assignments have multiple attempts but average the score. He does curve at the end of the year. Take this professor if you need a flexible schedule.
He is a veryy veryy kind and caring person. This was the only reason why I stayed in this class. He is not best with explaining the lessons. He gives an assignment with few attempts but you get the mutual which ruins your grade completely. But once again he is a very kind person, only reason I stayed in this class.
Professor wants the answers a specific way, even if your answer is correct. Also, he gives you the average on labs, so if you did well the second time, you still are stuck with a bad grade. If you do not understand his concept of sig fig and the way he wants it, YOU WILL NOT PASS THE CLASS!
Harsh grader ensure you have the correct numbers while rounding and using the sig fig method properly because you will get the answers wrong if it is not HIS answer. Now the quizzes, if you repeat them, your score is average, which honestly doesn't better your score based on the average. Chemistry is a complex course; I had to get a tutor.
He gave us this textbook for free on canvas but it is so long so I just watched videos to help me understand concepts and I did great on the exams, although he wants the answer to be precise on rounding so you got to be careful with that but his labs were light work, he said attendance was mandatory but never took attendance!
I literally got close to a 98% for his Chem 051 class. At first I was a bit worried about significant figures as it seems to be the common theme among the reviews. But, literally it was no problem. The people complaining did not actually do the work and instead want to blame the professor which is unfair. The professor is very fair in grading.
A great professor who is very understanding of his students' situations. He gave me extra time to complete two assignments when my dog was hospitalized. He also emphasizes that class participation is not mandatory, and he is approachable. What's more, he does not judge and kindly answers all questions without making you feel stupid.
Took a hybrid 8-week Chem 051 course with him. Great professor. Both lab and Zoom attendance are graded, make sure to show up. Willing to answer questions. Never condescending. Tests can be tricky, but they are all online. Very specific arithmetic rules must be followed, so this class would be very difficult for someone that does not like math.
Prof. Fickel is straight to the point and he makes chemistry simple he has time for his students he even helps you by solving issues in chemistry he gives an e - text book and he adds you tube teachers that can teach you further making it so easy for students. he is the best
I had a really positive experience. He's an excellent professor․ Լab and Zoom attendance count, so participation matters. The exams are online and can be a bit challenging, with very strict arithmetic rules you have to follow. The class may seem difficult, but if you stay busy and are consistent, everything will be very manageable.
Dr. Fickel is a great chem professor, zoom classes were easy to follow and in person lab was fun. As long as you take your notes and follow the math, you'll be fine. Quizzes and exams are online; he has a few discussion posts you'll have to do. Other than that, most of the work is done in the lab.
