she's tough but it's because she really wants you to do your best
Though sometimes unclear she knows her stuff. Pay very close attention and you'll do fine. She tends to challenge her students, but it's college it's not supposed to be easy.
I'll say this much I've never used a dictionary more than in her class. She definatly broadened my use of vocabulary.
unhelpful, rude, and arrogant
This lady gave me a headache in the classroom
EXTREMELY RUDE,ARROGANT, AND BORDERLINE DISCRIMINATORY!
Challenging course, but very interesting. Gilbert had high but achievable expectations for her students. You must complete your assignments as directed and pay attention to the lectures, or you will not be successful in this course. (Course taken 2001)
not a good teacher at all... didnt show up to class a lot... not helpful.. wouldnt answer questions.. not very nice
She always is late to class. She dose not grade our assingments before the next one is due. She is a very bad teacher
very rude,,, do not take her class.
VERY mean and was ALWAYS late. Never made sence of what she wanted from our papers..UNCLEAR.
Mrs. Gilbert came in on the first day of class mean to us,a professor w/o a sense of humor and one who will be very stern and unapproachable. The one thing about her that our ENTIRE class hated was NO ONE knew if they were passing or failing,on the last day to drop. She hadn't returned our papers so there wasn't a grade to compare to or even guess.
This teacher is poor. She is late for class a lot. Disorganized, confused, arrogant, rude, insentive.
Horrible teacher, the worst teacher I have ever come across in my life. Unprepared, unclear, extremely rude and thinks she knows everything, which she absolutely does not.
She is a nice teacher. She is very demanding, but her students get more out of the class because of it. She was never more than 5 minutes late to our class. In addition to that, she answered any questions asked. If she was ever rude, it was because a student was rude to her first.
The only comments I have are about her unproffesional manner and her lack of organization. Her lack organization made the entire class frusterated. She is also guilty of reverse discrimination.
I agree with all of the previous comments about Mrs. Gilbert. She was at LEAST 5 minutes late to class every time, she would keep us late, she was unorganized, rude... the list goes on. She never gave our papers back. We never got midterm grades, and she could never explain the way she graded. I did get an A, though.
Mrs. Gilbert is very professional. She is not rude, just direct. We are not children so don't expect to be babied. I personally appreciate this because you will never have to wonder where She's coming from. Open your mind & learn from a great instructor. She is extremely knowledgeable and she makes learning a joy. Hat off to you Mrs. Gilbert
I too found her guilty of reverse discrimination. Put it this way...she failed me on a term paper which resulted in me failing her class. I later got an A on the SAME paper with another teacher at RVC and went on to Eastern to take advanced composition etc. The experience was an unprofessional joke. If you are caucasion STAY AWAY.
The key word... "UNORGANIZED". Does not hand in papers on time, never available (and when she is, she's very distracted, on other matters), goes off on tangents and does info overload on topics. She is a great person, but she does too much! In addistion, some classmates claim she misinforms. But thats MRS GILBERT (DO NOT CONFUSE WITH MR GILBERT)
I have never had such a POOR experience with a professor. She was late to every class. She is a quite unorganized and lost several classmates papers throughout the semester. I found Mrs. Gilbert to be very demeaning too. I DO NOT recommend this teacher. If there are no other sections open- wait until the next semester to take this course!!
Mrs. Gilbert is an excellent teacher. She treats her students like adults, rather than high school students. She does expect a lot, but is very fair in allowing time in class to do some of the work. Lit/Eng classes require reading, so if you don't want to do the reading, don't take the classes. Very charismatic lecturer as well, not boring.
Absolutely one of the worst professors I've had at RVC after Scarpaci. We had three professors in the Cultural Pluralism class and Prashar seemed to be the only professor who was competent. The class is disorganized, unclear, and biased. The syllabus was given to us 5 weeks into the class and it wasn't followed very well. Horrible, horrible class.
She seemed to be a good professor to me. Although she would get very sidetracted. When giving out the assignments she wasn't really clear of what she wanted, half of the class was confused, and she never really graded our papers. But when you asked for help she was very helpful in explaining what was wrong with the paper you wrote.
just a bad teacher nevere never take this class
She makes you jump through hops. I was in class with five other students that she fail the semester before. I called her to meet with me and I am still waiting for to call me; "three months later". I feel that she is there to do a job and if she feels like it you will pass her class or if you agree with her political veiws.
Worst teacher ever. Does not go by syllubus. If you ask a question in class she treats you like your stupid. No point in emailing orcalling her for help, she wont answer them. She wont even set up a time to go over papers or review. If I could drop this class I would!
I took this class because I had to and sadly, regretted it ever since I walked into the room. This teacher is absolutely by far the worst teacher I have ever had. She was always late, never collected anything and always treated like you were an idiot. She treats you like a child and her grading is checks and check pluses not actual letters.
Absolutely the worst teacher I have encountered at RVC!! Had I known what an awful teacher she was I would have dropped her class. Even if I had to pay for it..but I miss the deadline. Does not prepare you for essay final. Not a good teacher. Avoid this class!
Mrs. Gilbert is a very nive but strict teacher, as long as you do your work you won't ave any problems.
Worst teacher ever, does not tell you what is due, expects for you to stay after at least 10-15 every time, she is always late to class, never shows up for her appointments, made two of them and never met me at one, with no notice. AVOID taking this CLASS!!! or take it with someone else if you actually want to learn something.
This is the worst teacher i have ever had at RVC, DO NOT. I repeat DO NOT take this class, you will waste your time and money to learn nothing!!! She does not teach, or care, and has you do assignments but does not give proper directions to complete them right. Horrible TEACHER Wait for a class with another professor or you will be sorry!!!!!
If you can avoid this class with this teacher, please. Hard to understand what you are even supposed to do and what you are expected to do. expects you to do the work of a masters student at harvard or somethin. just avoid this class with this teacher. you will get NOTHING AT ALL from this course
Professor Gilbert is by far one of the most intelligent and engaging professors at RVC. She is passionate about English Literature and shares that passion with her students. Her class discussions are excellent and force you to critically analyze the assigned text. Professor Gilbert is by far one of the best professors at RVC.
Prof. Gilbert is a nice person but a bad teacher: wasn't very organized, not clear on assignments and when they are due, also doesn't tell you your grade until the week of finals. She's late to class all the time, never in her office, and has you rely on others for information.
Honestly do not know how I received an A. She only handed back around 3 of the 5 or 6 total assignments in class and even those she handed back weeks after we turned them in so we had no way of ever knowing where we stood in the class. The expectations for the class are so confusing that the entire class gave up on even asking what was expected.
we spent TWO WHOLE class periods just going over a syllabus. She over emphasizes stupid things and doesnt elaborate on other things enough.
ABSOLUTE WORST TEACH I HAVE EVER HAD. There''s a difference between strict teachers with high expectations and just down right rude disrespectful disorganized discriminatory teachers. Gilbert is definitely crosses the fine line... EXTREMELY rude to students makes you feel like an idiot expects you to stay 15-20 late. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Prof. Gilbert is one of the most eloquent commentators on non-Western literature that I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Her lectures are thorough, insightful, and allow for great student input. She will not hold your hand or spell out every minute detail of assignment expectations. Just use your brain and enjoy the intellectual exercise.
While Gilbert offers good feedback she allows personal issues to interfere with teaching the material. Often unreliable in handing back assignments, always 10-15 minutes late for class, and wastes valuable time in class
Very unorganized, unclear, vague, and unhelpful professor. I took ENG 101 with her and I passed but do not know ANYTHING about writing a persuasive essay and citation. DO NOT RECOMMEND HER!!
Ms. Gilbert was one of my favorite professors at RVC. She is tough but then again this is college. She is also very intelligent, and nice. I received and A in the class. If you show up to class and complete the paper assignments you will receive an A.
Theresa Gilbert lack organization when it comes to her class. She made coming to class difficult. She is well educated and she knows english well. The problem is her delivery on it. I wouldn't take any other of her classes.
Prof. Gilbert is very knowledgeable, this semester she took a tally of where everyone's skill level in english was and worked from there. this class is not a very easy class if you work full time and you're taking it at night and have other obligations. If you must take her take, her class alone.
Very Disorganized teacher. She does NOT teach that match and expected you to know everything. Instead of teaching me, she gave me a bad grade for something she did not teach me about! she made me HATE English... STAY AWAY FROM THIS TEACHER!!!
DO NOT- for the love of God- TAKE THIS CLASS, if you value your sanity. Gilbert was often unprepared for class, confused, and extremely unorganized. Never ever received any sort of grade until the final grade was posted. Got an A, but definitely not worth the stressanxiety it caused. Get ready to not have any idea what is going on during class
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! SHE IS SUCH AN UNORGANIZED PERSON AND LOSES YOUR HOMEWORK YOU TURN IN. DOES NOT FOLLOW ANYTHING AND TREATS YOU DUMB. GOOD LUCK IF YOU ARE TAKING HER.
This class was the source of all of my stress during the semester. Didn't get a single thing back graded until about 3 weeks before end of semester. Corrected soon the things she suggested I correct on my research paper and then got it back again with tons more corrections. No matter what you do, she will find SOMETHING you need to correct.
She is unorganized and always late to class. She lost my work and gives to much work for a 3 credit hour class.
Do not take her. she's the worst professor ever.
She rants for so long. Gives assignments and doesn't grade them. She's rude to students and she missed 3 classes and did not even tell our class. I drove 30 minutes to get to class to find out we didn't have it. Attendance matters. Participation matters.
She is very rude and lectures a lot. I didn't like her at all. I don't recommend taking her for any classes.
I would not recommend this teacher. Although Mrs. Gilbert has apparent knowledge on what she is teaching, the way she approaches instructing is belittling, disrespectful, and unclear. She doesn't grade assignments, the whole class period is an unorganized lecture, and she speaks to students like they are beneath her. Work is do-able, though.
The worst instructor that I Ever have in my life, the course is extreamly unorganized, she was disrespectfull to students, lecture way to much but not important stuffs. I didn't feel like I learn anything form her.
Professor Gilbert has easily been the worse teacher that I have ever encountered in all of my years of education. She was very unorganized, confused on due dates, forgetful and assigned more homework than what the class was worth. The class isn't impossible to pass, but be ready for an unorganized and chaotic semester in her class.
I had her for my night class and would always assign hmwrk for us and she didn't collect them towards the end of the year. I wouldn't say she's my favorite in the class but she sometimes is funny but will talk FOREVER! Never got a pop quiz or test. I was scared I wasn't goi g to pass if you do all the work you should at least get a C average.
Worst professor I have ever taken. No clear guidelines, due dates moved up at the last minute, tough grader with little explanation of the expectations. Missed so many nights of sleep because she decided to make huge papers due the next day. Would never take again. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
I feel like Prof Gilbert deserves a better score! I agree that she can be frustrating because she takes a long time to give feedback, and you dont know your grade until the end of the semester. But shell give you a grade on a paper and allow you a chance to resubmit for a better grade. Class picks up fast the last month. Overall easy to do well.
she is amazing and is more than willing to help you with anything you might need. there is a lot of work and this class will be busy, but the experience is worth it
Worst professor ever. Very unorganized. She spent the first 60 minutes of class explaining what we were going to do in class that day or later in the semester. Even a week before summer break she'd do this. But guess what. WE NEVER DID ANYTHING SHE SAID WE WOULD. Took a majority of OUR time making irrelevant announcements. Horrible.
AWFUL!
This professor was nothing but a nightmare. Professor Gilbert not only seemingly never graded a thing but didn't abide by her own syllabus. I would advise against ever taking one of her classes- especially her online classes.
She was terrible I tried to contact her about my grades and she didn't reply till months later and she clearly doesn't know how to teach. She's so bad that no one in my class understand a thing she was saying. During the whole semester I didn't even learn one thing.
This is the worst professor I've had in my time at Rock Valley. A paper was wrote and turned in near the beginning of the semester, but it wasn't even handed back with feedback until the very end. A terrible teacher, and it seems as if she doesn't really grade anything. This class is good for an easy A, but terribly boring and nothing is learned.
The whole class was unclear. No website to check grades or homework. Homework was all over the place just like her lectures were. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR ANY REASON!!!!!!!
Professor Gilbert is an easy and fair grader, but extremely dry most of the time
I learned some things about being a better writer but she was all over the place and most of the time she doesnt collect work or she takes weeks to return back papers
Shes not very organized you have to show up to class in order to know assignments and context. No quizzes only papers and final And a journal. Homework based on books and papers on personal experiences. Doesnt use EAGLE. Takes a while to grade but gives excellent and detailed feedback. Participation counts a LOT.
We didn't do anything all semester besides one paper (which she didn't even take as a grade) and then in the last 3-4 weeks of class, she hit us with three papers. We did a couple worksheets to "guide us" but she didn't grade them until the paper due date so we didn't even know if it was alright. got points off? you probs can't tell why.
While I do think Dr. Gilbert is genuinely a kind, smart person who cares about her students, she definitely has her flaws. She's often unorganized, comes up with assignments and papers on the spot, which can be hard to understand. Her lectures often stray off topic or feel as time fillers. She assignes 4 easy papers and semester long book work.
Mrs. Gilbert is a great teacher. Her lectures can feel like time fillers, but if you participate and help make the class move on faster it'll benefit everyone. She is a tough grader, but she will gladly look over your paper as many times needed. She's a real gem and I recommend taking this class.
I did not enjoy being in her class because I did not learn anything. We spent over half of the semester going over very basic stuff we should've learned in high school and talking about content completely irrelevant to the course. Overall, she is a very nice lady and was pretty understanding; however, I did not get anything out of the class.
Professor Gilbert is the worst teacher I have ever had. Nothing was graded last 2 weeks and she even didn't grade a lot until the semester was over. She was unclear about all directions and I had to redo 2 big assignments because she accidentally used an old template but still never even fixed it! Doesn't teach & this is my first B at RVC.
Professor Gilbert takes forever to grade the assignments that were assigned, that why so many students didn't do the work because the assignments would never get graded. When you would try to contact her about the questions you had, she would never email you back. With her grading things late it was hard for us students to help our grade.
Professor Gilbert gave us lots of homework and never graded it in a timely fashion. It wasn't until the day of the final when I was finally getting feedback on homework I submitted 2 months prior. My peers and I sent endless emails obtaining our questions regarding the homework and we never got responses. We didnt do work since it won't get graded.
Professor Gilbert gave many, many assignments and did not start grading them until over half way through the semester. Numerous students stopped doing the homework since they were not being graded. Her directions or announcements were always vague and not clear enough to do the work efficiently. She did not respond in a timely manner or at all.
Professor Gilbert is hands down the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. The class ends in 3 days and she still has yet to grade 13 or more of my assignments. She doesnt respond to emails as well so if you have an issue she will not resolve it. She is failing not only me, but all of my classmates as well for no reason. Do not recommend her.
I have never taken an RVC class before and I absolutely will not take another English course with RVC again. My professor was MIA, never responded to emails and questions, never graded my assignments till last minute. We had an essay and it was not graded or left comments on until the DAY BEFORE our exam and knowing it has to be turned in at 8am.
She is unclear & unorganized. My grade has been the same for the past 3 months. She grades almost nothing, & what she does grade is graded poorly with no explanation or feedback. We are basically done with this semester & I literally have no idea whether I will finish with a 95% in the class, or with a 25%. The only thing I can say to you is RUN!
Lot's of long, droning lecture that's more life advice than English related. She actually has a lot of interesting insight about different subjects and I love her outside of class, but the actual lecture within class is mostly anecdotes and moral/ ethical advice, and it's dry as sandpaper.
Professor Gilbert is okay. She is a kind person and does attempt to make conversations. However, her lectures are very repetitive and go in circles. You will not know your grade until around midterm, and even then, you will not know what your grade is based on. I had to quarantine due to covid, and she did not respond to a single email I sent.
Professor Gilbert does not grade any assignments until the last week of the semester so you have no idea what grade you have received, she leaves little to no feedback on assignments when returned, and nearly the entire year is spent getting lectured about things you learned in junior high while trying to stay awake listening to it. Stay away.
She is not very easy to work with, extremely difficult.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you want a teacher that cares about their job enough to grade and give feedback about assignments within a reasonable amount of time this is not the teacher to choose. less then a month of the semester left and she has only graded 3 assignments that were due back in January. WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD.
Although the work load is heavy, I enjoyed the class as a whole. She is a tough grader and takes a long time to give graded things back but allows corrections on essays to help raise your grade. She likes to joke around during discussion which is nice. I would just recommend staying up to date with assignments and you will easily pass.
Nice person, not a good teacher. She's MIA most of course, gives assignments for past parts of writing process (doesn't grade them until way after future parts, so don't expect to learn anything). Gives VERY little feedback, and you have to ask for it, very delayed response time. She teaches nothing, then grades pretty tough. Communication is key!
Very hard to get in touch. Some weeks you're not sure what the homework is until last minute. I didn't learn anything and would highly recommend any other teacher if you have the chance.
Such a bad teacher that I even considered leaving the class without getting reimbursed. She is mean to her students in a lot of cases and is a really bad teacher that talks about nothing related for the duration of the class. NO NOT TAKE!!! TRUST ME!
Professor Gilbert was very unorganized throughout the whole semester. She didn't grade anything until the last week of class. She does not respond in a timely manner and berates you for not answering her confusing questions. We spent half of the semester on the first module for no reason. Her lectures didn't make sense and were spent wasting time.
Pros: - Personable, and willing to work with you on assignments and due dates if something in your life comes up - Offers extra credit - Knowledgeable Cons: - Has difficulty operating canvas and often forgets/thinks she posted assignments that were not posted - Slow grader/emailer - Easily sidetracked Overall: Not recommended but most will be fine
She hasn't graded anything since the semester started and it is hard to know your grade when finals are 2 weeks away. Repeats the same stuff every day.
Professor Gilbert is nice and funny as a person. The thing about her is that her is that she doesn't grade at all. It is almost the end of this course, and she still hasn't graded things from the beginning of this course. She is also very harsh on her grading; she likes you to be precise with your work. But lets you fix essays.
Extremely confusing class and assignments. Grades things extremely late. She keeps in touch but is always late. This class/professor is just something else. Wow.
Professor Gilbert is a caring person but not a particularly great professor. She does great work in the community, will work with you if you have personal troubles or don't understand an assignment but she struggles really teach. You will not know when assignments are due, there will be unclear criteria, but you won't be too slammed.
this professor does not give enough notice for paper or assignments, takes offense to things that have happened in the past if you write about them (shouldnt as an educator), gives you one day to write a paper. she does not respond to emails or students concerns. i can only imagine how many people have failed her class that actually need it. 0/10
Mrs. Gilbert is a very personable teacher, she makes accommodations for you based on your circumstances. However, she waits until the last minute to grade everything. She never answers emails, takes forever to respond to anything. Would NOT recommend taking her. She is an awful professor, save yourself the trouble and DONT take her !!!
Professor Gilbert is a caring person but not a great professor. She does great work in the community, she will work with you if you have personal troubles. However, you will not know when assignments are due, and she is a very poor communicator, don't bother sending emails she never responds. DO NOT TAKE HER
She takes forever to respond. Don't take her. Didn't put in grades until a day before the semester was over. All my classmates are failing as well because of her.
Words cannot describe how awful this “professor is” I truly cannot understand how she has been able to teach for this long. Do NOT take her.
This teacher is beyond awful. Do NOT take her. She didn't put in grades until last minute, never returned emails. I would contact her many times a day and she wouldn't get back to me until days, weeks later. It was extremely frustrating, she needs out of her job.
Awful teacher. I wish I read these before taking her class. She doesn't grade anything… doesn't respond to emails. terrible.
Do. Not. Take. Her. Awful.
Just don't take her..
I loved having Mrs.Gilbert as my professor in an in person class! Although she takes long to grade, she gives good feedback. Only take if you have the patience!
Just awful.
Professor Gilbert has a caring demeanor but struggles with organization and clarity in teaching. While personable, she can be slow to grade and unresponsive. Unstuck AI was helpful for test prep when her lectures fell short.
So bad. Do not take her
She is very scatter brained and takes forever to get through material. I only passed because I took AP lang in high school. would not EVER recommend her to someone that struggles with writing, she makes everything so complicated and does not care to elaborate on any topics ever. never posts assignments ever.
Instruction is confusing she repeats herself all of class Mundane Work Spent 2 months working on 1 paper now she's trying to fit 3 papers and 2 tests in the last 3 weeks of class Gave ONLY my class a midterm because we were all failing Never answers emails Refuses to grade papers Gives no feedback Secondary level instruction college-level grading
I recommend coming to her in person for questions because she never replies when you email her. Also, when she says she posted an assignment (make sure to check asap), she forgets to post. She grades stuff until the end of the semester. If you fail her class, she will give you a chance to pass.
I would never take this course or any other courses by this professor. Does not grade assignments until the very last minute and gives little to no feedback on things. I had feedback given to me on drafts for papers after the deadline for the final copy. Assignment posting was practically non-existent, and I feel like I didn't learn anything.
Does not grade assignments on time, doesn't use Eagle to post assignments, overall confusing and we never finish in class activities. Just a bunch of nothing for the class period. Also wants us to turn in final papers before receiving rough drafts and gives no feedback or nothing.
