She made lectures interesting, easy quizes (I never even read the book), just go to class! :-)
Interesting lectures and a nice person but she's not that easy if you don't read the book.
Enjoys adding her politics into lecture and is not very friendly outside of class. Still possible to get an A, but just look for another teacher.

This is by far my favorite instructor at Loyola. She's not quite an easy A. She's hilarious in and out of class, and she responds to questions quickly. If you have any interest in history, you'll do great. She only requires 3 papers, a few quizzes, final
No Comments
Very funny & entertaining! At the least, she keeps your attention during lectures. Not an easy A, need to study. 3 papers, no tests, quizzes every couple weeks. If you like history though, she's perfect for you.
I doubt that any instructor could show more enthusiasm for teaching than she does in history. She makes you want to learn., even if intended not to. Snazzy dresser.
Took Viking history as a first time offering. You have to put some work in because you have a group presentation in front of the class,a couple papers and a couple quizzes, but she is not a hard grader, and super into her work. Highly recommend her.
Shes the coolest and the nicest. Lots and lost of extra credit! Grades not too hard and shows alot of enthusiasm and knows whats shes talking about, shes also very funny!!!!
Makes class fun. Gives good notes. Read the assignments and study notes. Gives essay style quizzes (not too bad & were announced) and Final Exam (Must be familiar with all material covered) Gives final study guide. Do 3 of 5 papers. Lots of extra credit.
Great teacher! Her enthusiasm is refreshing and fun. Also she is very easy to get a hold of either by visiting her office or by email. Make sure to keep up with the reading outside of class and you will be fine.
Great teacher, very fun!
TOO MUCH WORK FOR AN INTRO CLASS
Interesting class for the first week. Then it goes downhill from then on. Too much work/readings/papers for an intro class. She gets really into it. Do Not take your senior year!!
FANTASTIC prof! Lots of fun, loves her history. Quizes, papers, and final - oh my - but the extra credit save the day. Is willing to help when you need it, and grades fairly. Would recommend her to anyone who has to complete history core!
she's a cool lady but lots of work for class-must do reading/go to class if you want to do well- best 3 papers out of 5 chances, quizes, and cumm. final, discussion- worth it if you are willing to do the work for a core class
No Comments
Dont miss class if you can help it. Loves people who speak up - just say anything! I dont think she was a hard grader at all, but the class was a lot of work for an intro class. Great class for people who aren't big date people, just remember a few right before the quiz and you'll be fine.
her system is really nice. lectures are full of info, quizzes aren't hard and neither are the papers. she really enjoys history which makes the class interesting
Way too much work for an intro class. If you are taking this just to finish a core class and nothing more, TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER! She tries to make class interesting, and sometimes succeeds, but there is just too much to do. Go to class and you will have a better experience, but try to avoid it.
She thinks everyone is going to have the same interest she has for the subject, so she quizes on specific details and dates. Most of us are just taking this class to fulfill a req.
Interesting but hard. You choose!!
great teacher...interesting assignments and she does a good job explaining the material...read the primary sources but everything from the text book is covered in class
GREAT professor. All the people saying that she is too hard are slackers. Only 3 small papers and a few quizzes and exam, and she grades easy. Makes history really interesting, I never slept through any of her classes, even though they were at 8:30 in the morning. Highly recommended!!
She's your worst nightmare. She thinks everyone is interested in history like she is. Her class is the most boring class I've ever had and people always fall asleep in her class.
the course would be easy except for the questions she asks; they are maybe deliberately obscure. and yeah, "super quizzes" are the same thing as exams, maybe a little shorter but worth the same amount.
One of the best professors i've ever had! Ended up with an A in her class and I never missed a lecture because they were almost always truly interesting and fun. Even the papers were enjoyable. Quizzes are pretty rough, but they don't count for much. I highly reccommend taking her, especially if you don't like History. She'll make you love it.
great teacher. actually knows her stuff as opposed to teaching out of the book. you can tell she really loves her subject and expects students to try. definatly not a blowoff class and try to go to every class. alot of info is given in each. no tests. small quizes and 3 papers.
By far the most boring class of my life. Very unclear especially when it comes to what to study for the quizzes. The papers are impossible.
TGD is not a good professor. Sure, she knows names and dates, but she can't teach to save her life and that's what really counts. Assignments were consistently unclear and graded erratically. I just got the study guide for the final and it's totally worthless. Might as well just read everything over again. Take at your own risk.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. Those who say she is good probably kissed her ass. Her lectures don't correspond to her quizzes, which is an essay question, or 5 short answers in 10 min. If you take her make sure to bring not only a pillow, but a shoe to throw at her. She is HORRIBLE.
WORST HISTORY TEACHER IN THE WORLD.
If you want to butcher you gpa, take her. She barely ever tells you what is on the quizzes, and when she does, its not on there! Papers were impossible. Luckily I did well on the final and saved my grade. A LOT OF READING!
She is a very nice person, but overall the class is very challenging. As a history major, I took the course because we need one pre-euro. I would only take her class if i had to. Though we always did get good food in the class.
Dr. Gross-Diaz is tough, but is a really good teacher. Be prepared to read a lot, but if you manage that, the quizes and papers are a cake-walk. If you really like the middle ages, there's no better professor than Dr. Gross-Diaz
I thought this class was fantastic! She was so incredibly knowledgeable, her lectures were really easy to understand, and if you have basic English grammar skills, you should do fine on her papers. She is a somewhat tough grader but only because she has high expectations. Her entusiasm made me want to learn more! Definitely take this class.
A lot of reading from the primary sources and textbook. Quizes and the final are unpredictable. Essays are ok if you have a good argument use good support from the primary sources. Although she is enthusiastic and knows the material extremely well, the unpredictability of the quizes and final can kill your grade. Take if you love studying history.
Very nice professor, will help if you ask. You have to have interest in the topic (I thought Vikings was great) but if you don't you might not like her. Very knowledgeable, but assignments are quite difficult. Probably better to take for upper level courses but I really liked her and the class.
She is a really nice teacher, and loves her job, but there is something off with her grading: in a good way. She gives out B+ and A's on essays really easily. like, you don't even have to try. It's kind of unbelievable. If you suck at writing, take this class!!!
She knows the subject and is very enthusiastic about it, but she is a little tough because of the unpredictability of her quizzes/final. Drops one paper (out of 3 in my semester). Gives feedback/help when writing papers.
She was the best teacher I've had for History. Really outstanding. Her papers seem a bit daunting, but they are not really that bad. Her lectures give life to a subject that has been dead for a couple centuries, so its really worth it. Quizzes, Tests are easy, just attend class. You have to read the books, but they are easy reads. Awesome class.
This class was boring, assignments were unclear, pop quizzes, did not receive any grades back until the last week of class, papers were harshly graded; topics were uninteresting and completely useless. waste of life and time.
She is so sweet and into what she teaches. attendance isn't mandatory, but she teaches outside the textbooks, so going to class is important. Moved around deadlines to make relieve some stress. Tests/quizzes will be harder than you expect, but she gives study sheets and grades very leniently. Take her, she makes history very interesting and fun.
She is so nice!!!! She is so passionate about what she teaches. If you need help reviewing your paper, she is really helpful. You definitely have to study for the quizzes, but she gives study guides. And participate!
Great Teacher... IF you want to be talked AT and IF you like feeling dumb trying to answer her ridiculous questions, or if you like being made fun of for asking relevant questions... DO NOT take her, unless you enjoy boring lectures and taking endless notes that won't get you anywhere
I took her class 5 years ago, she is ok but somewhat silly annoying and often gets her facts wrong. The Middile Ages should be one of the most interesing parts history, but she only foucs on a few events and trends and often omits the really important stuff. She would do well to read Harry Crocker, Warren Carroll, Robert Spencer or Thomas E Woods
Ok you Hist101 people obviously don't know what you're talking about. I've taken 2 of her history courses and done great in both. She really knows her stuff. She tells funny/stupid little jokes, uses all different aids to teach, and is very flexible. you will learn from her. Take her and enjoy learning that history isn't about textbooks
Amazing professor, by far the best history teacher I've ever had. Anyone who can give life to things dead over a millennium is a miracle worker. Funny, energetic, devoted. She grades easily. I wrote a paper that contradicted its thesis, still got a B. If that's not easy, I don't know what is. You'll learn lots too. Take the class.
I loved this class!! Even though it was an 8:30 am class, it was worth it. She is an amazing professor. I highly recommend her. She drops the lowest 2 essays, 3 count. She only counts 5 quizzes, and we take like 10. She is very helpful! TAKE HER!! You will love her. I got an A. Go to class and you will be fine
Dr. Gross-Diaz is awesome!! Anyone thinking about taking HIST 101 should take her course! She is so passionate and knowledgeable about history and Medieval studies that you can't help but be interested too. Grading was fair and not too hard. She drops the lowest essay and quiz grade.
Professor Gross-Diaz is great! She loves anything English and has the best sense of humor. Her class is difficult and time consuming but if you put in the effort an A is very attainable!
She may be extremely passionate and knowledgable about history, but she expects her students to know just as much as she does! I haven't been able to get anything above a C on any quiz or essay because I am not "specific enough." I'm not trying to get my Doctorate in history, I'm just trying to pass a core class. It's unreasonable. Don't take her.
This professor is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about history, but every other aspect of her teaching is extremely lacking. No blackboard account, doesn't respond to emails, and didn't give any grades back until the LAST DAY of class. Absolutely ridiculous. Quizzes make up 30% of your grade and she grades very hard. DO NOT TAKE HER.
She is truly passionate about her subject. However, I would not recommend this professor. She is a tough grader, and only gives you 12 minutes to complete a quiz with two essays. There isn't enough time to give her the kind of detail required for an A. She also comes off as condescending to her students, although I don't think she's aware of it.
Probably the worst history teacher ever, she is beyond crazy about history and is an impossible grader. Do not take her
This class was literally the hardest class I have ever taken. She may be passionate about history, but her lectures don't really help with the quizzes; she tends to diverge into completely irrelevant topics such as depictions of art that don't help us really learn what happened in history. I highly recommend not taking her at all.
Boring and talks a lot about a whole lot of nothing. She grades hard.
DO NOT BE FOOLED. She is incredibly passionate but this class is INCREDIBLY hard. Her quizzes are impossible, short answer critical thinking over multiple chapters in the book. She only warns you the class before each quiz, so you basically have one day to study. Very difficult grader!!!
Dr. Gross-Diaz is an incredibly knowledgable woman and I respect her intelligence. However, it seems silly to hold graduate students and undergraduates to the same standards. Her grading is also difficult, and feels arbitrary at times. If you want to feel bad about yourself, take this class, If not, I would stay away.
She's definitely a tough grader. You MUST spend time on this class. I honestly didn't read the book, but I show up to class bc her quizzes are honestly based off the lecture. SO TAKE GOOD NOTES. Don't be afraid to ask questions and go to office hours bc she's extremely helpful outside of class. VERY passionate, DONT TAKE IF YOU WANT AN EASY A
Professor Gross-Diaz is extremely passionate about her subject, but other than that she is a terrible professor. There is no reason it should be nearly impossible to get an A in a core class, and yet here she is. I worked my butt off studying for quizzes and on essays, and barely managed to scrape a B. Do not take this professor if you want an A.
Professor Gross-Diaz is really nice and very helpful. TAKE GOOD NOTES and make use of the study guides she provides and you will do fine. Talk with her about the papers before they are due to get an idea of what she expects from you. She gives this map quiz that is INSANE! but besides that, pretty decent class/professor
You take 7 quizzes and drop 2 (I think). You also get to choose 2 papers to write out of the 3. This class is really flexible for a core class because of the options. Also, I think that she is one of the most interesting professors we have. I personally loathe history and I really enjoyed this class.
The class is an easy A if you put in the effort and show up to class. She includes participation in your grade, but offers plenty of extra credit opportunities for you to earn some of those points. There are no tests and she always tells in advance when there's going to be a quiz, and she also drops your lowest quiz score.
TGD is very tough. Lots of work, 3 papers but you only have to do two. I went in for help on an essay and she told me it was good work yet I received a C on the paper. The quizzes are very difficult and you have to be VERY specific.
Don't take her. Awful teacher.
For a 101 intro class, this was one of the hardest classes I had to take. I love history, but her lectures were very long and sometimes very boring. This professor is very smart and knows her stuff, but can expect way too much out of her students. Participation matters, but there aren't many chances to participate since she talks for an hour and 15
Professor Gross-Diaz was fortunately a "fun" history teacher so I actually enjoyed class. She knew so many things that weren't in the textbook that it kept you engaged and interested. Her quizzes were very specific which makes them difficult. This includes asking or specific dates or names of things. If you read and review, you will be fine.
She is so so so cool! I love her outfits and she knows so much about History that isn't in the textbook. You can tell that she is really passionate about her work. Attendance and participation is a MUST. She assigns four papers and you get to chose which of the first two you want to do. So you only write 3. Quizzes are assigned 1 class before.
SHE IS THE WORST TEACHER. NO OPPORTUNITY FOR BETTER GRADE. QUIZES ARE EXPECTED TO BE DONE IN 10 MIN. SHE TREATS YOU LIKE A HISTORIAN. I AM NOT A HISTORIAN, I AM A STUDENT, SO PLEASE TGD TREAT YOUR STUDENTS LIKE STUDENTS. ITS A CORE CLASS 101 AND SHE TEACHES IT LIKE A PHD HISTORY ON EVERYTHING. THE CLASS IS WAY TO HARD FOR WHAT YOUR GETTING OUT OF.
TEACHER TEACHES THIS CLASS LIKE A PHD ON HISTORY. NO OPPORTUNITY FOR BETTER GRADES. QUIZES ARE EXPECTED TO FINISH IN 10 MIN. ESSAYS ARE CORRECTED LIKE IF IT WAS A PHD. SHE TREATS HER STUDENTS AS HISTORIANS WHICH STUDENTS DONT LIKE.
She's a fun teacher and interested in what she does but she expects way too much out of a CORE 101 class. Her quizzes are hard (YOU MUST KNOW SPECIFIC DATES) and her papers are long. You will not know what your grade is until the class is over because she never tells you or posts it. Extra credit is the only thing that will save you. Good luck.
She is so cool!!!! The lectures of class are also easy to understand and she also has many stories and details for us in order to better understand!!!! There is no midterm or final, and there are two essays based on books, and her prompts for essays are inspirational, her help for essays is amazing !!
This professor is such a sweet person. She is kind and helpful and is very interested in what she teaches! Has a great fashion sense too. Lectures are knowledgeable yet sometimes boring. No homework and rarely takes attendance. 3 papers. 2 are difficult and one is easy. 5 small quizzes. She gives direct study guides. Got a B and didn't try hard.
Tons of extra credit opportunities throughout course. You should be able to get an A because she gives study guides for quizzes. No homework but does assign 3 papers. They aren't too bad but you must read the small penguin classic books to do well. Very nice teacher and will read drafts too
Dr. Gross-Diaz is a wonderful professor. She is exuberant and she tells pre-16th century like a story making the lectures very interesting. She definitely has a deep love for what she teaches but that also reflects in how she grades. This is not a class that you can easily breeze through, a lot of critical thinking and writing is required.
Keep her talking and you will get her off schedule enough to have an easy semester. There are only a couple papers and quizzes. Just go to her office hours for the paper and she will tell you what to change and what will get you the A. Just make sure you look at the study guides before you have quizzes because the answers are exactly on them.
Lectures are long and boring, she gives two papers and then the final is a paper, two map quizzes. I'm not a fan of history but really put effort in the class. It's impossible to get an A on the paper due to her tough grading, she even says so. Honestly, for a core class it's such bs, just take another prof to secure a nice GPA.
If she gives directions, they are unclear. Usually no directions given. Expected to magically know what she wants on papers and assignments. Frequently skips office hours. Rarely returns emails and when she does, at least 5 days later. Talks down to students. Way too high of expectations. Wants you to do research in 5 different languages. No thanks
Prof Gross-Diaz is super cool. We had nearly a chapter a week, but the online quizzes weren't too bad and they can be retaken until you get a 100%. She has no midterm nor final, only 2 essays, a webpage review, and her class is engaging and fun.
Professor Gross-Diaz is a very interesting woman, but her class and lectures lack any sense of organization. Her powerpoint slides are random pictures and have no use for students. The way she grades is seemingly random.
Dr. Gross-Diaz is extremely knowledgeable and her passion for history is clear in every class. She makes it easy to get a good grade as she makes note outlines and study guides available, as well as offering a lot of extra credit opportunities. I would certainly take another class with her.
For a core 100-level class, this was the hardest class I've ever taken. She expects way too much for such a basic class. Quizes were basically like exams and expected so much information. She offers tons of extra-credit, but it's for attending long lectures and writing 3 page papers FOR ONLY 3 PTS (if you do it good enough) added to quiz points.
This is the worst professor I have ever taken. I have never received lower than an A on a paper in any other class, yet in hers I received D's on the papers we were assigned. She is extremely rude in her feedback and never replies to emails. There is no way to get a good or even decent grade in her class.
This class was by far the most demanding and least enjoyable class I have taken. For a 100 level class, she expects way too much from her students and treats them as historians who have a PhD in the subject. Her quizzes & essays are unfair, unreasonable, and difficult to get a good grade on. 0/10 would not recommend.
Professor Gross-Diaz is very smart, nice, and incredibly invested in her subject. She makes the grading criteria clear, but even when following the criteria the grading is rather harsh. If you put in a solid effort there's no reason you shouldn't get a good grade. Just be warned that it's going to take up many hours of your time.
I have never had a worse professor and that's saying a lot considering I took chemistry. Rudest teacher ever, every comment she writes is very belittling and makes you feel dumb without giving any feedback on what to do better. Not only is it super hard to learn online, but you also have to deal with your professor basically calling you dumb.
extremely high expectations for students and is a tough grader
Dr. Gross-Diaz is a great prof. and really makes class interesting. Though, her lectures do sometimes lack organization and are a little hard to follow. She is a harsh grader, but very clear about her grading scale, and will work with you to help you get a better grade! Take the time to ask for her help, and she really will help you a lot.
She really comes across as an expert in Medieval Studies, which is awesome. However, this makes doing any essay for her tough; she is a harsh grader. Once your ego is in check that feedback is priceless if you honestly enjoy the subject material (I do.) I wish I had taken advantage of her office hours because I probably would've gotten an A-/A.
Dr. Gross-Diaz is very knowledgeable about her field and clearly enjoys teaching. However, she is a very harsh grader and is very no-nonsense in her feedback (she gives LOTS of it and expects you to write a very scholarly paper). If you are considering taking this class for anything other than a history major/minor, I would look elsewhere...
literally just don't. if you are not a history major or minor get out while you still can.
Save yourself while you still can. By any means do not take her for HIST101. Her tough grading criteria and snarky remarks on your discussion posts nearly make it impossible to get a good grade in her class.
Very harsh grader on every single assignment. Super lecture heavy and never gave good feedback or clear feedback.
Worst professor I have had during college! Her lecture lacks any kind of organization, she sends insanely long readings EVERY week, she is not clear with her grading criteria and for being a 101 course she expect us to spend too much time and effort on it.
Wouldn't take again.
Her lectures rarely ever went over any information that was genuinely needed for other assignments. Always grades things so oddly, such as giving out 3.7 or 2.3 as grades. Expects students to devote an absurd amount of time to a class that is a core. Another book is needed besides the rudimentary textbook that is mandatory.
Tough class but learned a lot and enjoyed the lectures. Her teaching style and passion made it fun.
Avoid this professor's class at all costs - super harsh grading, unclear feedback, and lectures that lack organization. Though the textbook is used, you'll spend way too much time and effort. Try Unstuck AI for better study prep.
She makes you read so much, which might be ok if she actually lectured on the material. Instead, she broadly says something about it with a few tidbits here and there on the required materials, for the rest of the time she rambles on about cool fun facts that are pointless for the exams. Do yourself a favor and avoid this class.
Prof. Gross-Diaz is definitely a harsh grader however, she is an excellent professor. She does not cold call and does not have her students discuss much (which was nice for me)Her lectures are very engaging. Would recommend with somewhat of a light schedule because the assignments/tests were definitely time-consuming. I learned a lot from her.
She is very knowledgeable and approachable, and her lectures are very informative and interesting. She is a hard grader, but she offers many extra credit opportunities. In addition, she curved the midterm. The readings can be a lot, but let's be honest, every core class requires you to read a lot. THANK GOD SHE DOES NOT MAKE YOU TALK. I AM TOO SHY.
She is very knowledgeable, but all you do is write. She also grades things out of 4 so it doesn't always make sense why you get a 3.7/4. If you don't like writing, don't take her. She gives a lot of extra credit though.
so much reading and writing. she is very clearly passionate about history, but this class is very very dense. long textbook readings with required questions every week, as well as discussion post. her grading is very harsh, and feedback is unclear. way too much work for a core class. if you are happy do not take this class.
Dont take her. She just yaps and yaps. Not a very good teacher, class is also pretty boring.
She is really funny and passionate about her work. She is also very understanding and flexible with deadlines. Talk to her, she appreciates it!
