She puts her heart into this class. Lots of work in the course, but she is great. Lectures are very interesting.

All about attendence but is probably the best professor I had all through college. She cares about what she is teaching and knows things first hand. Dr. Martinez rocks!!
One of the best professors at the U. She truly cares about the material and the class. You NEVER want to miss class or a reading, but she makes it all worth it.
A friend recommended I take a class from her and I was not disappointed. She has a passion for what she teaches and she helps you open your mind about things. I enjoyed her class so much that I took another class from her the following semester.
She LOVES what she does and it totally shows. AWESOME professor to have.
Amazing professor!! Would love to take more classes from her.
Theresa is the best professor at the U. She is brilliant and hard but you will not forget her message. Long Live Theresa!
Great professor! I really admire her! She's an amazing woman! Loved all of her classes.
Best prof I've ever had. She cares about the subject, and makes you care about it. You don't want to miss class, because her lectures are riveting
She brings the intensity. A kick ass class!
She cut a huge corner, making the class final optional(which undermine the validity of the class). She repeates urban legends as fact and goes off on irrelevant tangents. She is passionate, and certainly does care about what she teaches. She is engaging. But it would have been nice if I she would have been more rigourous in verifying some of he
She's an amazing professor, just make sure you do your work and know your stuff! She appreciates honesty and hates excuses. Classes are not to be missed, and you don't want to miss them either!
very smart lady and easy to get along with. The classes she teaches are mind opening.
Dr. Martinez is an amazing professor--probably my favorite at the U. She really cares about her students. Her class is discussion-based and participation is mandatory. You need to attend class (which is fun anyway) and do the readings--she'll call you out if you don't and make you write an essay. Pretty easy grader. Highly recommended!
Best professor at the U.
By far the best professor I've ever had. I've learned more in her class this semester than I have throughout my entire college career. Make sure you go to class and do the readings, as long as you do, it's a very easy class. I highly recommend taking from her, but be prepared for some intense and potentially uncomfortable discussions.
I have to disagree with all of the positive raves about Dr. Martinez. The subject matter of the class was interesting, but I disliked her class. I think she could have used song and movie clips that were more relevant to the topics. She favors some students over others. She's admirable, but on a high horse. I'll never take another class from her.
Professor Martinez was amazing, by far the best professor I've had thus far at the university. She has a strong passion for what she teaches, and she presents the material in a very real way. Actively listening in class will almost guarantee your grade. Amazing professor, awesome class!
Awesome class, fun and interesting. Homework is easy and there is two papers a midterm and a final that is optional if you attend class everyday. Teresa is awesome and loves what she teaches. She can get a little out of control and she curses a lot (some people can't handle that). I recommend the class.
Her passion is amazing. I learned so much in one semester just because of it. She does cuss a bit, which some people at the U won't agree with. To me, it more exhibits when she is passionate about a topic. I wold definitely take this class again each semester until graduation and recommend her to all my friends.
She is passionate and will make you passionate. Her class can be a lot of fun. It is different from any class you will take. She does; however, pick favorites and her ego is a little large. She made some statements that were iffy and when I researched the 'facts' she presented were not from good sources. I would recommend at least 1 class from her.
She is an amazing teacher and makes class very fun and entertaining. I enjoyed going to class and listening to her lectures. I would highly recommend her as a teacher and I think she was fantastic.
Easily one of the best professors at the U. She's passionate and carries herself in such a strong way that you love the class, whether you're interested in sociology or not. She cares more about you leaving the class with an intention to make a difference, rather than throwing tough assignments at you. Highly recommend taking one of her courses.
Theresa is by far the best teacher I have ever had. Her Dev. behav/Soc cont. class will blow you away. Wish I could take her every semester. She is a very engaging and empowering teacher. She is very clear about assignments and her test are all essays. Don't worry! she gives you plenty of notes to write your test on. Take her!!
She really cares about the class and everyone in it. Very passionate about what she teaches, which helps everyone want to be there. Really great class. Even the assigned readings were interesting but not too long.
Loved her class. She is very passionate about the subject. She keeps the classroom very engaged and interested. One of the most interesting classes I've taken. The class is not hard at all, but I learned a lot. Tests are based off notes so go to class. It's not that hard.
Great and fun lectures, fairly easy tests, as long as you take notes in class you're good to go!
Great professor! I really enjoyed most lectures. However, I was frustrated because her essay assignments are generally vague and open-ended, yet she would take away points for specific things she wanted to see that were not mentioned. She swears by "not using rubrics" but it would be really helpful to know what she is looking for. Still, an easy A.
Professor Martinez is an inspirational teacher who is passionate about her work. Attendence is extremely important! Be on time, take notes, and you'll be golden for tests! The tests are actually essays, so the notes are crucial for them. She truly cares about each of her students and wants them to succeed!
Theresa is an amazing professor who respects her students while also challenging your views. She expects you to work in her class but she will go out of her way to help you. Her assignments were creative and you have to think outside the box to do them. highly recommend taking any class from her
Theresa is a phenomenal professor and is passionate about what she is teaching. Every lecture was amazing and has truly influenced my life. At first her workload seems overwhelming but the assignments are creative, short and she is a fair grader. Her exams are essays, but as long as you attend class and take notes, you will ace them.
Always had the most amazing lectures. She doesn't worry about political correctness and gives creative homework assignments. Attendance is mandatory but you will actually want to go to class and if you email her a legitimate reason for missing class, she will generally forgive the absence. Even if you don't speak up in her class, she knows you.
Hands down the best professor ive ever had during my college career. She is an amazing person and her lectures will change you for the better! She absolutely loves what she does and is very passionate about her teaching. If you go to class, take notes, and do your work she will pass you. I wish I could take a class from her every semester.
Theresa is an amazing professor and you will never be bored in her lecture. However, she treats her students like kindergartners. Despite her constant swearing, she will yell at students for not taking notes, not looking at the bored, or not looking "interested". She even has moved two people who were barely talking to each other in class.
Definitely one of my favorite professors at the University. She's very PASSIONATE about the subject, which makes it so much more interesting to learn about. The movie and music clips she uses are relevant and make an impact. You will leave her class with a completely new outlook on inequality within the U.S.
I've taken three of her classes and I will take more. Her lectures are awesome, she is an easy grader, and she accepts late assignments. As long as you take good notes, you'll get an A.
She is my FAVORITE!
Theresa is great! Her lectures are amazing and very interesting. She is very passionate about what she teaches. Definitely my favorite class of the semester!
Awesome Professor, knows how to captivate you. It's because of her I decided to add a minor in Sociology, and I'm a Cell & Molecular Biology Major, two completely different spectrum's.... that's how great of a teacher she can be!
Love the way Theresa teaches and her enthusiasm. She loves what she does and it is so obvious. I would take this class again and the assignments are not hard they are actually pretty easy. Tests are also easy as long as you take good detailed notes during class. But its not hard to do that because her slides are detailed and so are her lectures.
LOVED THIS CLASS! It will definitely be challenging not so much with assignments but more personally. There are things we learn/talk about like race and gender. It can be difficult for some people but for me it was a very eye opening class and made me realize many things that I was unaware of. I recommend this class! Life changing!
Martinez obviously cares for her students and pushes each of them to succeed. On the first day of class, she had already memorized many of our 200 names. She is quite passionate about what she is teaching and always allows for people to speak their minds without being attacked. I learned a lot from her class, and she is definitely a lot of fun!
Wonderful professor. You had to work for the grade, but if you tried you would get an A. I would totally take this class again because she changed my life.
Professor Martinez is a once in a lifetime professor. She really cares about every single student. Her lectures pull you in and you really feel the connection. If you ever have the opportunity to have a class with her you should take it. She makes going to the University of Utah worth it!
Look, its a super easy class. Put in a little effort, do the assignments, take notes and you're golden. My problem with her was her constant injection of her political agenda into lectures. She also didn't give very good feed back on your assignments and left you wondering why you didn't get full points .
She is very energetic and she loves what she teaches. She is clear about it and you're likely to stay interested. Don't skip class because that will be you're ultimate downfall
love dr. martinez! one o the best teachers at the U!
Theresa is by far the most inspirational teacher that I've ever had. She really dives into the subject material and relates it to her own personal experience. It oftentimes got emotional and was very eye opening. Regardless of your major, I highly recommend that you take this class or one of her other classes. Easy A if you do the work.
This is by far the best class that you will take from the University! I loved ever second of it and you really lean alot. She is definitely the best professor on campus. It is because of her that I decided to add a sociology minor to my degree and I'm a Cell & Molecular Biology major. Oh and she is really hot by the way!!!
Fantastic, keeps students interested.
Not only did I love this class, but because of Theresa I decided to add a Sociology minor, just because of it, completely out of my field for a Cell & Molecular Biology major. The most inspiring professor I've had so far. Oh and she is REALLY hot!!!
Holy Hell. Theresa is the most inspirational teacher I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. The subject matter can be really hard to stomach but she will help you discover your voice when it comes to speaking about current issues. TAKE HER CLASS. You wont regret it.
Theresa was the best professor I've had so far. I enjoyed coming to class. She relates to students really well and makes the classroom a great environment. Attendance is taken at each class and effects your grade. Lectures are entertaining, she uses a lot of media which is nice too. Take notes and you should do fine. 3 tests and 2 papers, that's it
Theresa is one of the best professors I have ever had. She truly cares about her students and is very passionate about what she teaches. I have taken three classes from Theresa and I have loved each and every one. Even if you're not a Sociology major, you should still take at least one class from her--you won't regret it.
Prof. Martinez was great! In SOC 1010, your grade is based on attendance, 2 papers, and 3 exams. The papers are only two pages long, and the exams are taken online so they are open book. Her lectures are interesting and she shows a lot of great media in class. I'd definitely recommend taking this class from her!
It is an amazing; I took her class for my major: Sociology. I already fall in love with my major because of her. She changed my perceives from the society and made it better to become more visual. Also, we usually watch movie and music to understand author's perceptive by the society. Her class is worth our times even too many students.
I only took this class for the diversity credit, but it turned out to be my favorite class of the semester. Martinez is a phenomenal professor and while her lectures are mandatory, they're inspirational and fun. She always wants to know what you have to say about the films and music she shows you. 10/10 would take again
Amazing professor. I loved attending her class, the lectures are exciting and captivating. She truly loves what she does and cares about her students and will learn every ones name. She is the best professor i have ever had and have taken several of her course. There are 3 papers to write, she gives you the topic and you write it off the material.
I took an intro class, so I believe a lot of her zeal was misplaced. She tended to treat us as high school students; constantly shushing, not allowing computers, etc. However, it was very simple to pass and the criteria was very clear. She has a lot of passion for her subject.
Professor Martinez is caring, inspirational, and well-respected among her students. She cares so much about the topics being lectured about in her class that often, Professor Martinez would get teary eyed in the middle of her lectures. Tests are taken online and very straightforward; you can choose between an essay or multiple choice test.
Honestly my favorite class taken. She is a amazing professor who really cares and is passionate about her subject. Great class. Don't be late. Also reading is mandatory for tests. I plan on taking more classes from this professor because of how great she teaches.
I LOVED Theresa. She makes class really fun and one that you actually want to attend. I went in not really even knowing what sociology is and she changed my life forever. If I could take every SOC class from her I would. Book is cheap but you can easily find articles/summaries online. Tests are all on canvas or you can write papers.
Professor Martinez by far has more differing opinions from my own than any other professor I have had, however she is a fair grader and she is very open-minded and friendly to those who may think differently on various subjects. She knows her material and she is able to teach in a way anyone can comprehend. I would recommend her to everyone.
Theresa Martinez is easily one of the best professors at the U. She is so inspirational and has a personal connection to what she teaches. I really enjoyed her lectures and she was very easy to contact. Light reading assigned outside of class and minimal HW. Midterm and final were small papers to be completed outside of class. Highly recommend.
I've taken 3 classes from Dr. Martinez so I think that in itself says a lot! She has a paper due almost every week but they are based on interesting topics. Be prepared to get randomly called on, so make sure you've read the required reading! She also grades for attendance. All 3 classes I've taken from her seem to have the same format.
I've never had a more effective, and compassionate professor than Theresa. She cared about each and everyone of her students and wants everyone to succeed. She has a way of captivating the students' attention for the entire class time, and she teaches such emotionally taxing subjects with grace. Take a class from her, she will change your life!!!
I know it says Sociology of Rock N Roll but it should be music cause she covers all lectures from blues, hip hop, to grunge and metal. Dr. Martinez is a professor you should take to see a teacher who is passionate about what she teaches and the class opens you up to different kinds of music and how they influenced or were influenced by generations
Martinez is the best teacher i've ever had in my college career. The first day you go in she knows everybody's name no matter how many she has in the class, she is caring and passionate and engaging. She changed my life after just one class. Amazing person, amazing teacher.
I have taken one class with her and I would take more in a heartbeat. I wish I could find a way to work her classes into my major but I have considered taking more of her classes just because she is that good of a professor. Absolutely, my favorite.
Hands down one of the best professors I've had in any subject or program. She is passionate, fiery, brilliant, and so woke. She had us read books and discuss them thoroughly, as well as write about them. The books dealt with difficult issues such as rape and racism, but all of us in the class were changed by them! I plan to take her again.
TAKE HER CLASS!!!! Theresa absolutely changed the way I view and see the world, and has made me want to minor/double major so I can take as many of her classes as I can. Deals with tough issues and is very real and open about them all. You will get an A if you just participate and do the assignments. This class was AMAZING and should be required.
She's so cute and entertaining. Normally in lectures I keep checking my clock for the time to go by faster but in her class time just flies by and I wish the class went for longer! I love her energy and personality because it doesn't even feel like a lecture. I'm now considering double majoring in sociology because of her. Awesome teacher
Theresa is by far one of my favorite professors at the U of U. She is hilarious and is always cracking jokes or telling stories which is what makes her class so interesting. She has a very strict no talking and no electronics rule. There are TONS of extra credit opportunities and her tests are not something to stress about as long as you are going.
Theresa Martinez is my absolute favorite professor. She is a beautiful human being who really cares about her students. She takes attendance and you won't pass if you don't go, but her lectures are great. Her assignments aren't hard and neither are tests. By the way, be prepared to get freaked out on the first day, she knows EVERBODY'S name
If there is one professor at the U that you should take a class from it definitely should be Professor Martinez. She cares so much for each of her students and on the first day of class, despite having 100+ students just in that session, she knew every single persons name. She makes you feel so many different emotions and is such a great professor.
From the first day I looked up to Professor Martinez, she is so inspirational. Her lectures are amazing and has made me view the world in a better way. I hope to take future classes of hers and will always keep recommending her class to my friends!
I wish I could take her class(es) every semester... She makes her students engaged and wanting to learn. She gives lots of extra credit opportunities and her tests and assignments are easy if you go to class. 12/10 would recommend taking one of her classes!
Theresa is the best teacher I've had at the U! She is passionate and I looked forward to going to every lecture. You explore a lot of interesting topics which inspired me to also take her Deviant Behavior class! As far as your grade goes, it's super easy. 3 exams & 2 essays. I got extra credit on both essays and 95+ on all 3 exams. Just take notes!
By far the best professor at the University of Utah! Take any of her classes and you will not regret it. SOC3381 will change your life and you will never look at the world the same. The content is so important, everyone should be required to take this class. Would take 10000 times over again if I could.
There's a reading every week with a different type of response paper. They were easy and she is an easy grader. There are many opportunities for extra credit. Martinez is incredibly passionate and fun! She cusses a lot but she is so lovable. Her class however, won't teach you much about inequality. It covers what everyone already knows. Still fun!
This is the 2nd class I've taken from Theresa, and she is still the best professor I've ever had. Her lectures are so engaging, it's the only class I have never drifted out in. Weekly small readings/papers, 3 exams. Does take attendance daily, sometimes has pop quizzes, but super easy. The material was very interesting as well. Theresa is incredibl
Professor Martinez is an amazing professor. She makes lectures interesting and supports her students. Her classroom envionment is very friendly and accepting. Expect a short reading and 1-2 page assignment weekly. There is also a paper due in the middle of the semester. Follow her instructions and you will easily pass this class.
This is the most amazing teacher I've ever had. I'm now doing a Soc minor just to take all her classes.
Beautiful human being inside and out. Very passionate about what she teaches and all of her students. She wants everyone to learn and works hard to create a healthy environment in her classrooms
If you want a caring professor, choose Theresa. She is great at class discussions and providing interesting material. You will love her!
I went into the class with low hopes (as it does cover gender studies), mainly for the 2-for-1 GE credit. She clearly cares about the class, passionate about it while being a sound and funny person! 1 paper a week (1-2 pgs) + essay midterm + final (3-5 pgs). You watch pretty intense stuff, I always get an adrenaline rush after attending class
I took her class five years ago (2013) and still remember her lectures. She had a huge impact on how I saw the world and taught me a lot about myself and the world. I've gone out of the way to recommend her to people outside of the social science field because she has a lot to offer students and her passion about the subject is unmatched. A+ prof!
Her lectures are great. She shows lots of music and film related to serious topics in social inequality. I highly recommend taking this class if you need to take the DV/BF gen ed. You'll learn a lot but the grading is very fair for the weekly essays and the exams.
She puts so much into every lecture. She teaches because she wants to and she is good at it. There are papers every week, 2 pages single spaced, and 4 4-5 page double spaced. They are extremely easy though and if you do everything it is really easy to get extra credit on every assignment 10-20%. Grades attendance heavily. So you must show up.
Professor Martinez is an amazing professor! She loves what she teaches and (tries) to remember everyone's name. If you don't show up to class, you will get docked points and miss the notes for that day. It is important to go to class and write down notes because your grade is based on 4 exams (They are to be taken at home and are open-note).
Theresa Martinez is out right the BEST professor I have ever had. TAKE THIS CLASS. I dont know who I would be today without this class. She taught me so much about life and myself. My entire mindset has changed for the better.
Professor Martinez is hands down the most involved and caring professor I have ever had at the U. I'm a Computer Science major who came into this general elective class with low expectations, and she completely blew me away. She is so amazing, and such a great professor that it made me sad that I can't take any more classes with her. Take her!
Amazing teacher, would take again.
I NEVER write these, but Theresa is the exception. Theresa is hands down the best professor I have ever had. The workload is a paper a week with four larger papers that make up your grade, but she teaches in a way that makes you want to do the papers. Would 1 million percent recommend any of her classes!
Loved Theresa's class. She always made lectures relatable. There are a few exams (no final) and you can choose between multiple choice or an essay. Attendance does matter though as she takes roll every class! She also gives extra credit opportunities.
Attendance is graded. Lectures are amazing so it makes you want to go. Lectures are clear and take notes because tests are at home and open note. She does swear occasionally so if you aren't open minded enough to be okay with a little swearing then you probably aren't open minded enough to truly understand the concepts she teaches. rarely have hw
this was a great class! in the beginning i wasn't looking forward to writing a paper (2 pages) every week but they turned out to be quite easy to write. Attendance is graded but if you do good on the essays (not hard to do) then feel free to skip every now and then. She is very passionate and lectures are never boring, take this class!
Theresa is incredible! She memorized everyones name (200+ students) by the first day of class and her lectures are always engaging and passionate. There are weekly reading assignments which are easy and the exams are open note essays. The content is emotionally challenging but soooo worth it!
I learned a lot in this class but more than that, it helped me grow as a person. The connection that Theresa had with the students, including myself, immediately caused me to be more interested and engaged with the class. She had every student's name memorized and that made each student feel cared for.
I absolutely love her and recommend taking her SOC classes. She cares about each student and has an incredible memory, she looks at the student ID's and memorizes everyone's name and face, even if there are 200+ people in the class, she knows you.
Personally, I didn't like Theresa. I felt like she didn't treat her students as adults, more like teenagers. She doesn't let you have any kind of electronics in class at all, which can be fine but I felt she was very condescending about it. She also targeted the black people in the class and picking on them. Overall, I didn't get the appeal.
She's unique. She memorizes everyone's name before class. Attendance is mandatory. Super easy grader, there are 2 papers and 3 open note tests. She doesn't allow electronics or talking. She's pretty funny and easygoing. She cares about all her students, both in regards to academics, and real life. She's done a lot of work and has tons of stories.
I love Theresa and the class. So good. Too good.
You have a paper due every week, but seriously they are super quick and easy nothing to stress about. she cares about you and your life. this class was so fun I wish I could take more like it.
There are not enough words to describe how amazing of a professor Theresa is. She has such a big heart and truly cares about her students. Her lectures are fascinating and engaging and you share her passion. She is hilarious and I loved listening to her teach. In this class there were lots of assignments but she gives extra credit if you do well.
Attendance is not mandatory but you will want to go to every single one of her lectures. (It's the best part of my day no lie) She is the most caring professor I have had. I feel like I can express my opinions openly in class. I want to take another one of her classes for my SOC minor. Theresa if you're reading this we love you. <3 -Fall 20' Class
The classwork itself is straight forward. She gives extra credit depending on how she feels you did, but don't expect to know HOW you got it. The no rubric thing is obnoxious enough, but with no feedback coupled with that fact, I was left annoyed with the classwork. Loved lecture, hated the vagueness TLDR: superb lecturer, extremely poor feedback.
Theresa is such a great professor! Easy A and you will love her class!!
I loved her! She is so sweet and responds to quickly to emails. Class is so fun and easy. Discussion posts every week that you get full credit just for doing. 3 exam or essay exam options with 2 essays. She offers so much extra credit so there is no way you won't get an A even if u do bad on exams. Such a great professor and class, don't get book.
Theresa is the best professor I have ever had. She really cares about the class material and her students, and she makes the class such a safe environment for talking about difficult topics and personal experiences. She really cares that her students succeed both in class and in life, and is not only an amazing professor but an amazing person.
Prof. Martinez is AMAZING! There isn't a textbook for the class but there are a lot of pdf readings to do and homework is entirely writing assignments. Lectures are not mandatory but you should go because they're worth your time! Really easy class to pass if you put forth the effort in your writing. Martinez is such a caring professor. Love her!
This class was hilarious despite covering topics such as serial killers, genocide, etc. Theresa is a great, down to earth professor who has the best stories to tell. If this class fulfills a requirement for you, just take it.
Theresa is the best professor Ive had thus far. Even in an online format, her lectures were engaging and the content was interesting. She is a genuinely good person and cares a lot for her students. Assignments and exams can be challenging at times, but if you take good notes youll be okay.
Attend class, listen to the lectures and stay off your cell phone. If you can get over her radical politics and swearing, it will be a good class. Don't miss class! Don't buy the textbook.
She gives amazing lectures and it is mandatory to go or you will not pass the class. Attendance is one of the biggest grades but it is so worth it!
She is an amazing teacher! This class is note heavy you will take notes majority of the time but they are easy and she makes them entertaining. Attendance is heavily mandated. Highly recommend this class for an easy and fun A. She is a very caring professor and listens to everyones input on topics.
There aren't any assignments just 3 exams and a couple essays. The exams were pretty easy as long as you don't miss class, there is a lot of note taking and you are graded on attendance. Gave her 4/5 because she is very strict about phones and talking. If you're talking she'll call you out and her TA's walk around the class to monitor phone usage
Theresa was an incredible professor with a lot of passion for her subject matter and I really appreciated that. The class was a learning curve as she expects a lot out of her students but also truly wants everyone to succeed, and she will work with you. Get ready for a lot of reading and writing, but it is all so worth it and so important.
The best professor I've had yet. She's understanding and her lectures are really entertaining. There isn't any graded homework however, there are readings. Her lectures are heavy on note-taking and her tests are open note. She's very understanding and offers a couple chances of extra credit throughout the semester.
Was a really great professor who gives extra credit occasionally, especially on big papers if she feels you did an extra good job
This class was super easy and the teacher wasn’t bad. I didn’t like how she always called on the same people and took off points with no reason or explanation.
Lots of people love her but she . Loves to victimize herself
Love, love, love Theresa. She is an amazing and very inspirational woman and idk how anyone could ever say anything bad about her. She is truly what makes any class you take from her what it is. Single page writing assignments every week or so with 3 exams (1 multiple choice 2 essay based). Class content is very unique (you will see).
One of my favorite classes and professors ever. The materials can be really heavy, but she does a great job covering them!
She doesn't read the articles she gives to the students. Everything I wrote essays on was incredible outdated. She showed content that I found disturbing with no educational benefit. I would not recommend this professor.
My favorite professor at the University of Utah. I've taken 2 of her courses, Inequality through Music and Film and Deviant Behavior. She does cuss and can show R-rated material, but if she shows it at any point she will warn you well ahead of time and help you avoid it. She memorized everyone's names by the 2nd lecture. She's to reach and talk to.
I love her so much. I am a chemistry major, and she made me consider a sociology minor. One of the best teachers I've ever had. This class talked about some really heavy stuff, but she always supported us through it. You write 2-3 papers, but they are graded pretty lightly. If you keep up with the work, you will have a great time.
She is sooooo amazing. This class was hard for me because I hate writing, but it was worth it. She is an INCREDIBLE professor and is so helpful. lectures are always interesting so DON'T skip. Plus she grades attendance. Lots of reading and writing but if you stay on top of it and do the work it's not terrible. Worth it to get her as your professor.
Theresa is an amazing teacher, I enjoyed her class. ATTENDANCE is mandatory only because it is graded. Her lectures are interesting most times.
Everyone loves Professor Martinez! She is that one relatable professor who will swear and tell stories in class, but you still learn. She is passionate, knowledgeable, and there for you. 3 multiple choice open note online exams (or you can pick an essay if you want), two essays. Extra credit is given out often. Overall awesome class!
She was very inspiring and caring. She had almost no homework and graded very easily. She cares about her work and students and it shows in her lectures.
She is the best professor I've had! I enjoyed and looked forward to every class. Tests were easy and as long as you attend class, you're golden. I would recommend anyone and everyone take a class from her!
Theresa is an amazing professor. She truly cares about her students and people in general. I highly recommend this class, it is the best class I have ever taken and it changed my outlook on so many things about the world. The coursework is very manageable and she grades easily on essays.
Theresa is an incredible professor. Her lectures are engaging and interesting, and as long as you show up to class and take notes, you will easily leave with an A. The only assignments are two essays and she gives tons of extra credit. It's obvious she cares about her students and wants you to succeed. I highly recommend taking her class.
Great professor, with super interesting lectures. The class was fun and the tests were super easy and open note. If you go to class pretty consistently and take notes, it's basically a guaranteed A.
Professor Martinez's lectures were always very informative, but not in a boring way, and she engages with the class a lot and always made it fun. However, she doesn't allow notes to be taken electronically, which for someone who studies better with electronic notes for various reasons, wasn't ideal.
This class has been by far one of my most favorite at the U! I couldn't imagine taking it with any other professor. Professor Martinez is one of a kind, well respected, and cares about each and every one of her students. Do yourself a favor and take one of her classes!
Her class has expanded my worldview to better understand and empathize with so many different groups of people. She is funny, caring, and SO genuine. It isn't difficult to see how much she cares about her students. Lots of stories, super interesting lectures. Assignments are straightforward and offer extra credit for those who go above and beyond
Theresa is an amazing professor. She is well-articulated and ensures everyone understands the concepts. Since lectures are emotionally heavy, Theresa does her best to elevate them. She truly loves her students, and she ensures empathy is always present. No electronics are allowed, but the class is more interesting and engaging without them.
She is very funny, understanding and kind to her students. Lots of great stories that will keep the whole class entertained the whole period. Her class describes topics that are sensitive to some people. Best thing about the class is that its easy and she is such an entertaining teacher. It covers very political topics,so try not to get offended :p
I honestly can't say enough good things about Professor Martinez! She taught the course material in a way that was easy to understand. She is so passionate about what she teaches; I learned so much that I didn't know before. She always made class so fun and entertaining; I didn't ever want to miss class! I would hands down recommend her!
Overall, I really did like this professor. She remembered the names of everyone in the class, around 100-150 students if I had to make a guess. Attendance is heavily weighted in this class, and it would be difficult to not make an A or an A- if you continuously show up to class. There are assignments weekly, taking about 1-2 hours to complete each.
Such a fun class. Lots of fun and entertains lectures. Attendance is required. No phones usage and notes have to be written not typed. If you attend the class and take notes you will easily pass the tests. Easy grader on the essay assignments.
She somehow makes everyone feel recognized during classes even in lectures of 200+ people. Somehow she had everyone's names memorized by the first few class periods. There isn't too much homework (2-3hr per week) and attendance is heavily emphasized. Don't skip class and there is a lot of extra credit given by going the extra mile on assignments.
Theresa is the best professor I have had at the U thus far. I have taken both her upper division classes as well as Soc1010 and it is evident that she both cares for her students as people and wants them to succeed. She does not put up with disruptions and has clear class expectations. Attending lectures are required but they are always engaging!
Everyday you need to sign roll (200 pts). Cool teacher, she memorized everyone's names and loves feedback from students. There are pop quizzes if no one participates. Lenient grader, I didn't spend much time on this class at all. There are textbook readings that I barely read, but I still got 90+ on the 3 exams. Utilize the extra credit!
One of the best professors I've ever had. Passionate about her work & students, long but invigorating readings, incredible lectures, and overall just an amazing person. Attendance is mandatory and a large part of your grade, exams are easy if you apply yourself. Good grader, often gives extra credit if you turn things in early. 100% take her class!
First day of class Theresa had all names memorized. Her lectures are amazing and she cusses like a sailor, her assignments and tests are extremely easy if you attend class & take notes. She very often grants extra credit on both. Attendance is 200 points, each test is worth 100 so make sure to attend class. Incredibly nice teacher who really cares.
Theresa memorized all her students names on the first day. She is an incredibly passionate teacher and if you take notes during class you're bound to excel. Attendance is a huge part of the grade, but her tests are very easy and she throws out extra credit like candy. She truly cares about every student and loves teaching. You'll never be bored!
Love her lots, she's such a passionate teacher and truly cares. She changes her students for the better!
Easily the best professor I've had so far. Lectures were super funny and engaging. She memorizes everyone's name before the semester to maximize every student's connection to the class. She was great at teaching and getting everyone engaged. I loved everything about this class and this professor. Highly recommend her.
It should be a requirement to take a class from her. She is the best professor I have had at the U. On Day one she had memorized the names of everyone in our huge class. The workload is very doable. Notes must be handwritten and phones/laptops are prohibited. As long as you put effort into your work and show up to class, you will be fine.
Gives narcissistic mother that provides just enough approval to keep you hopeful then gets inexplicably angry about things that don't matter. Yells at her students like children. She's probably guarded bc of frat boy disrespect but she doesn't discriminate with occasional humiliation of all students. Her commentary lacks nuance+ she supports cops?
Professor Martinez's lectures are engaging and entertaining. Attendance is mandatory, but worth it - she makes the material easy to grasp. Using unstuck ai alongside the textbook helped me ace the tests. An easy A if you stay on top of the work.
Best professor ever! If you have the chance, take every class she teaches. She's incredibly knowledgeable and accepting of everyone. Attendance is required and a significant part of your grade, but her lectures are 100% worth it. She's very energetic and passionate about teaching.
She's great! Super funny and really cares about students. She had lots of wisdom I've loved hearing about. A little bit of a stickler about some things but it's in your best interest. Totally take one of her classes.
I do not recommend anyone take this class. What little course content there is outdated, she assigns readings we never discuss in class. She spends entire class periods playing sections of movies, we're lucky to get one actual lecture of content in a two week period. She is dismissive, rude, and picks on students that look tired or disengaged.
Theresa's awesome! I really enjoyed taking her Rock & Roll Sociology class! She's funny, makes her lectures very interesting, and is super caring towards students. Attendance is mandatory and the workload with exams is very manageable for an A if you do well on them. If you love rock music, this class is worth taking from this amazing professor.
One of my favorite professors ever - I considered switching majors just so I could have a reason to take more classes with Theresa. Inequality through Music and Film was such an incredible class. Not too much reading, a short weekly writing assignment, and you have to take notes by hand during lectures which is what I usually do so I didn't mind.
She explains the content well, but she tends to be condescending and she treats her students like children. She also tends to belittle students for small things like being a few minutes late to class or asking "dumb" questions. On the other hand, she's always there to help those in difficult situations, and clearly cares for her students.
I enjoyed this class. The professor mainly focused on media involving youth and mentioned it would be her last year teaching it. I've taken about four classes with her, and all were interesting. Be aware that she only allows handwritten notes on paper or iPad—no laptops. She heavily focuses on notes, and attendance is crucial, worth 200 points.
Dr. Martinez is an excellent, eccentric professor. Classes should not be skipped since she grades on attendance and there are notes to be taken every class. However, the few assignments you get are manageable, and the multiple-choice tests (there is an option to do an essay if you want to) are online with open notes. I enjoyed this class a lot.
Theresa is wonderful and the real deal. The structure of her class is strict (no laptops or electronic devices, don't be late, talk over her, etc.), but it creates a great community. This class is so important and should be required!!! Attend every class - that's the majority of your grade.
Theresa is such an amazing person and her classes are such a welcoming space while also being very detailed and informative. Lecture slides themselves are barebones but she goes over and adds so much detail just talking to the class. Not a sociology major, but I would absolutely take more of her classes if I wasnt't graduating.
Theresa Martinez is everything. I would recommend her classes to anyone, even if you are not a sociology major. I love her so much.
The class was easy enough and Theresa is fine. I had a few interactions with her that I really did not appreciate and felt she brushed off my concerns and any issues I was having with the class due to concerns arising in my personal life. Her assignments were easy and graded fairly lenient with extra credit being given out for well done essays.
she's awesome.
Very kind, and very emotional. Passionate lecturer with excellent content. Grading criteria is confusing to say the least; however, lots of opportunities for extra credit if you know how to do it! The first 2 weeks are the hardest. Just stick with it; she's testing your patience and passion, it's worth it.
She was the best. This class wasn't for my major, but it was worth my time.
She was an amazing teacher! The class is challenging, but it is so much fun to learn! Definitely recommend this class for anyone who wants to learn and will put the time and effort into their assignments and notes. Quick Disclaimer! Only written notes will be allowed in this class!
Engaging lectures and workload is actually pretty light. Attendance is graded but also necessary for success. She grades fairly and unbiased so just try
A lot of the content is opinions instead of facts (Ze/Zim pronouns). Sometimes rude to students for no reason. Takes points off of every assignment without giving feedback as to why. Doesn't allow use of definitions other than her own.
