taking her class was the worst thing i could have done.she didnt seem to care much about you not understanding the work she rushed through the hardest units somethime doing 2 in one day! she talked about her personal life too much and was always sick and tired if you are struggling with math dont take her class!!!unless you go straight to t
She is the best math teacher ever! I can go to her if I need help and she has the best stories. I'm so lucky to have her as a teacher!
explained everything in a clear manner
She always stays late to help answer questions
She had no problem leting me make up work due to a family illness
love the class, had her last semester
Make sure each student understands each lesson and is very personable
tough but fair
last semester she would never rush me out even when her office hours were up
very professional
awsome
So far the best professor ive had at HVCC
Very funny, just an overall great teacher. I wish she couldbe my math teacher for the other math classes I have to take.
Excellent teacher who takes the time to explain clearly in class. Very personable, she makes herself available to help outside of class and is extremely patient. Exams can be difficult but by the time you get to department final, you'll be more than prepared. I highly recommend you take her for any math class.
Not good at all for this class. Ask her a question and she does not know the answer. Horrible.
The person who gave the last comment must be a total clown. This teacher makes people who suck at math look semi decent. Came into this class a total mess and left with a way better understanding. Lots of office hours. Takes the time out of her day so you can better yours in math to reach the next step. The best teacher to go through for Calculus
Great teacher took her time to explain.
One of the best professors that I have ever had! HVCC is lucky to have her. She cares about her students and will go out of her way to work with you if you need help. She is down to earth and has a great personality! She has helped me understand math better than anyone else ever has. Love her!!!! :)
she is the best teacher I've ever had at HVCC. She takes the time to help her students and she has a ton of office hours. She'll even make an appointment with you if you can't make the office hours. I recommend that everyone takes her! She's the best and i'll definitely take her next semester!
Professor Powers is a great lady, she's professional, nice, and very on key with what she is teaching. She is very 'down to earth' and if you go to her office hours, she will literally sit down with you and make sure you understand any misconceptions. From what I recall the tests were slightly extensive, but that is why they are called tests.
By far the best math teacher I have ever had. I took a higher level math last year and failed b/c the teacher wouldn't help, Prof. Powers takes the time to make sure you know what your doing. The lowest grade I have gotten in her class is a 91%, compared to last year i struggled to get a 50%. if you're taking a math class, get Theresa Powers!
i love professor powers as a teacher, as long as you try she is willing to help. She's very thorough with her teaching, But her tests are hard and her review packets arent much help at all.
The Test are way to hard. Study guides are not helpful. The questions are to hard, studying the work doesn't help much. The question are so hard you can't finish the test and the grading is harsh. I am really good in math never had an issue a student . Barley passing the class. Good Luck.
one of the worst teachers i have had, very un helpful via email and was always not so nice while emailing. she also doesnt give you a make-up take home if you missed a day. during class she seemed nice but while her office hours were open she seemed like students were a bother to her and again was very unhelpful.
This professor was terrible, she is very miserable. Talks to her students like they are below her. The way she speaks to the students in class makes me uncomfortable to ask questions. She has this attitude, that seems like she is annoyed by questions. Reconsider if you need a math. I did the work but still failed. The LAC is more helpful than her.
super hard tests
She gave lots of attitude. She talked down to her students and made me not want to ask questions. Her tests were long and hard. When I went to her office hours for help she acted like she didn't want to help me and she was super late to her own office.
Powers has a reputation for being a harsh. Her poor teaching was so bad that multiple students made a huge stink about it in class. She also had a bit of a mean-spirited demeanor much of the time. Most of the students seemed to outright hate her, but I just was disappointed with my bad grade. Would not spend my money for her instruction ever again.
Instructor Powers taught Pre-Calculus the way math ought to be taught. Pay attention, do the work and don't fear the tests and you will learn a lot.
I'm usually pretty good at math. I understand all the examples she gives us. Yet, when the test comes around (even after doing the review packet three times over) she throws tricky radicals and fractions that weren't in the review pack. So, even if you know the structural set up, she adds in harder factors to the equations. Wouldn't take her again.
I really liked Theresa Powers. Shes a tough lady for sure; doesn't take any nonsense, expects you to do your work and if you have questions ASK or she will keep moving! Its definitely important to do the homework. Show up for class, pay attention, read your textbook, study and ask for help if you need it. Yes, you actually have to apply yourself.
Prof. Powers is the difference between a "Teacher" and an Educator. Her tests are challenging, but she sets you up for them each day in class. Participate, TAKE NOTES and DO THE HOMEWORK. She works through the examples everyday, while writing notes. Simply follow along, if you have a question ASK! You are an adult (or should be) be professional.
Great teacher, very easy to learn from but you need to put in the work. She is willing to help those that help themselves. Show up for class, do the homework, and you will pass.
Go to the LAC if you are taking her class. They will save your life.
I had Professor Powers for Math 100, and she was definitely not a good professor. Her attitude towards her students was patronizing and condescending, and she seemed to intensely dislike questions in class. At one point, she called me up in the middle of class and loudly ridiculed the way I show my work on my tests in front of the students.
If you show up to class and do the work you will be fine. Explains everything to you in class. Homework isn't mandatory.
She was extremely ruuuuuuuuude! Bad attitude towards everyone. Will take off points for minor things on tests. Even if you had the correct answer. I went to the LAC and I still had failed cause she would mark off points for not doing it exactly how she showed us even though the answers were correct. Wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
Just a hard to deal with professor. 30+ question Practice homeworks are worth 5x less points than 3 question take homes. Too much focus put on doing the material out of class. Gives you graded take homes for note work you took the same day and sometimes needs it back and grades it even if you struggled and didn't understand.
Her tests are soooo hard! They're basically impossible to do well on. I study a lot and I'm constantly at the LAC and I still struggle to get a B. She can be kind of rude too. She doesn't accept late work at all. She took off points because I used a method the LAC taught me, so if you need help with math, forget this class.
Does not qualify to be an instructor. Lots of HW. Moody with some people, has FAVORITE PETS who can do no wrong. Rude, mean and insulting. Not helpful at all. Would not recommend to take her class unless you wanna fail. Tests are heavy and confusing. Tough grader, thinks everything should be her way or the highway. Does not hand tests back on time.
I really enjoyed taking this course! And professor Powers is really nice and she answers your questions so well. If you show up and pay attention, you'll do fine.
Theresa powers is a good person and a fine teacher but is on the difficult side. Her tests are traumatizing and you have to show your work exactly in the way she demonstrates. She gives decent partial credit and offers chances for extra credit but doesn't curve grades. She's strict and takes zero nonsense but she is polite. She wants you to pass.
I took this class, because I took pre calc in high school, so what could go wrong, I did the homework, I studied a whole lot, and got a D, took it again in the spring with Mrs Hampshire, and got a B, if you can try and get Mrs hampshire, prof powers just puts notes on the elmo and has you copy them at an extremely fast pace....
Took her class in the fall to get on track for engineering science. She is a really nice person, but he lectures weren't very good. She would occasionally answered questions in class but left a lot unclear. All of the homework was on web assign so it was very difficult to complete, and it was hard to get feedback on what would be on the tests.
I like the way that she teaches and will try to have her again next semester, but I wish the tests were a bit more spread out instead of immediately the day after learning the last part of a unit. It gives us little to no time to study, because we have to finish up the homework that's due the same day as the test and homework from other classes.
She rushes through the material and it's hard for the class to keep up. She skips a lot of problems but expects for us to know the material without trouble.
I loved having her as a teacher. She is so personable and talks about her adorable family. Her tests are a bit tough and the class is fast paced. She is willing to help out during her office hours and she's always available by email as well. She also offered a large extra credit assignment before the final, however, the final was heavy weighted.
Does not explain well. Harsh grader even if you got the answer right, you will lose points. Goes through lectures so fast and the way she teaches is so confusing but sometimes It can be understandable but half of the things that's on the test she doesn't explain in lectures and her homework is hard to do which is online
She is a very tough grader, and she really cuts off points even if you got the answer right. She is not very good at teaching, and goes through lectures too fast, and that's because she is trying to cover the topics but unfortunately she can't cover everything. She sometimes talks about her family too much, which wastes a lot of time.
Assigns HW and take home quizzes with material that we never went over in class, and are expected to know it. Tests are difficult because there are also problems that we never review in class.
I took this class online and was very dissapointed. As a class we were told the first day that in the homework assignments some of the questions would not accept the correct answer and that we had to message her and she would change our grade. This happened 4-5 times every homework assignment. You cannot learn math this way.
I hated this class. I took a hybrid, and for this we had to write a portfolio and hand steps in along the semester, I didnt get ANY of the steps back until a week before the portfolio was due. We had to fend for ourselves and figure out the online homework. Instead of teaching us stuff, she brought in childrens book to read to us.
Professor Powers is amazing! Is she a tough grader? DEFINITELY. It's because she wants to make sure you know the material though. 5 units - homework+quiz+test. Final exam (Proctored). She worked so hard to make sure everyone was set up for the final exam (with it being moved to online). I struggle with math, so I'm thrilled I passed!
I took her online class. Barely posts any lecture videos, just relies on the online lumen algebra text with sparse videos. Links videos to homework questions. gives snotty responses when you e-mail with questions. Probably needs to boost her self esteem by making her class impossible. Makes me want to quit school.
Everything is through lumen which is terrible. "Lecture" videos are few and don't really help. With her class there are 3 different types of problems. Lumen, Teacher, hw. Lumen doesn't explain things clearly, her videos are set up to look easy and hw/test questions are insane compared to what you're taught. 0/10 wish I could write more. She sucks
So I didn't want to give her a bad grade because she is a nice women in the few interactions I've had. But she clearly does way too many classes per semester. I went into my final with 2 of my tests (worth 50% of the grade by the way) still ungraded. I had no way of knowing what my grade was going into the final.
She's extremely slow to grade (I finished the semester and was still waiting for grades in exams I had done a month and a half ago) and slow to respond to emails. She is nice though and the practice problems can be done as many times as it takes. The online course interface is very useful.
Replies after a long time
Not the best professor I've ever had, but also not the worst. I have only had her for a little over a month. Study the material she teaches in class and the notes you take during lectures, and you will do fine on the tests. Also, you have to do the work exactly as she shows it in class or you don't get any credit.
just don't
Professor Powers takes forever to grade things. She graded probably 10-15 assignments the whole Fall Semester so I had no idea what my final grade would be. The class itself is kind of hard but the textbook does help.
I hated the class because of her. too much homeworks like we I have no classes to work on excepts hers, to a point where u have to cheat just to get through it expect to spend 10hours straight for the homeworks. The due dates are confusing, she gave for each assignment a different due date. JUST DON'T
Ms. Powers was great at explaining, she also was very caring for her students and personal. She gives great lecture notes that are very organized and effective. The HW's are long but if you do them you will succeed, she is also a prompt responder to emails, I was successful in her class because I would put the time in afterclass
As someone who has always been average in my math career, this was the first course I ever found unnecessarily complicated. From incredibly long readings with each new lesson to her bizarre test. I do not recommend it.
The lecture videos that she did post online were very helpful. unit3 had no lecture videos and UNIT 4 had few. She responded promptly to e-mails and homework questions. She gives 10 hw/quiz late passes & drops UR lowest quiz grade. U can do the hw as many times needed to get 100 and the quiz 3 times.7DB.allows full page cheat sheet for the final!
Professor Powers is nice but she does NOT know how to teach! She shows up to class, talks about her kids for the first 15+ minutes and goes over HW questions without teaching ANYTHING!!! She clearly takes on too many classes at once. I almost failed the class because of her. I am walking away from the class with nothing. Sorry.
Professor Powers was okay and all, however she starts her classes talking all about her personal life, she didn't teach well at all, she made us watch videos, take quizzes, and take tests all online using blackboard and my math lab. She made you feel very unwelcome when you went to her office during her office hours, etc.
The syllabus for the online class is very poor. When I asked about something I needed to know but that wasn't in it, she got very short with me and said "I should have read the syllabus" even though I said I did in the email. When I needed help understanding a math problem, she essentially told me to f off with no help. Avoid this teacher.
This remote asynchronous course takes more time to complete than my other three classes combined. She has no consideration for other studies, family life, or extracurricular. Be prepared for English type assignments in addition to math work and weekly discussions. Find an alternative to this class.
If you are looking for someone who might be an easy grader, she is not the professor for you.
absolutely miserable taking this course, cry most weeks. She does not teach. You are given access to an online textbook, told to seek tutor with any issues. The homework, quizzes, tests do not match up with examples given in class. Never grades. Been trying to speak with her for THREE weeks, she keeps giving me the run around. Avoid this teacher.
super tough grader, if you do one thing different than how she would in your work shown, but still have the right answer she would still take off points. Takes very long to grade. No late work and no exceptions. Isn't very understanding.
This class was tough. I took the 12 week summer course, it was very difficult. Syllabus stated work would be graded promptly when turned in on time yet I was waiting on grades from the beginning of the course at the end of it. I had no idea where I stood in terms of grades until the last week of the class. Grading was very meticulous.
I had a mental breakdown every weekend because of her, and it's very dificult to learn online because she has these 20 minute lecture videos, tells you to read parts of the textbook, then gives us an intense exam every other week. Homework is okay, but when asked about office hours she just says there's tutoring available in the library. Avoid!!!
You have to download a lockdown browser for exams which isn't compatible with chromebooks. Wants work done the way she teaches it only. Work must be submitted at 11:59 am -- stay away if you work full time. Expect 12-16 hours or more to be dedicated to the work she assigns. No late work submitted, no exceptions. Office hours between 8am-11am.
Powers Is alright as a person but as a teacher sorry to say but terrible, I'm having my finals tmr and I feel extremally unconfident. First things first, she does too much test and quiz's, doesn't really teach in class fr and just posts Online videos that we are supposed to watch, even tho 90% of us have job and don't have time to watch videos.....
Bad- she regularly mixed up dates and homework assignments and blamed me for it, giving me a zero when it was obviously not my error. I wasn't able to take the review exam because of technical issues on her part (which she also gave me a zero for), and there were incorrect answers on the practice sheets she gave us. It's clear she doesn't care.
The worst thing in ur life gonna be if you be her students
I have to retake 150 because I didn't learn anything she grades you on but when you're in class she ONLY grades you on quizzes and test Their worth 55% of your grade She doesn't teach gives you 20 min lectures to watch at home tells you to do the fat packet doesn't check then when you ask questions in class she gives you attitude thendosent answer
Terrible professor I had to drop the class. I tried getting help from her and she had zero enthusiasm to help me be successful in her class. When I was clearly struggling and lots quizzes. She teaches at a high pace and has attitude. Marked questions wrong on tests even if the answer is right just because you didn't exactly do it the way she does.
Never graded anything on time
#1. Lack of grading - I went into exams/finals with most of my tests/homework ungraded. I also did not receive a grade/markup for my final exam. #2. Many lecture videos were difficult to watch because the background noise was too loud and I couldn't hear her voice.
If there is one piece of advice I can give to new HVCC students, it would be to NOT take classes with Professor Powers. She never graded anything, was extremely rude over email, and turned me to the Learning Center when I asked her for help. The homework kept me up all weekend because of how time-consuming it was and she had no grace for late work.
Professor Powers will grad you on her application, asking persol information about gender, age, race, where you went to school, just More than ever and then grade you, mostly lose a half point off your grade in the beginning. Shes very mean and never is available to talk, has a office and is never there,do not take her course you will regret it.
HEAVY grader, long lecture videos, long tests/final exam, I needed help/direction with completing my 504 and she was not understanding or helpful. I would not take another class from this professor.
her lecture videos were not only long but were SOO hard to hear and had a loud ringing sound in the back, and it was absolutely horrible to watch and learn from! went into the final with nothing graded and barely passed because of her. I'm taking a harder math right now online and I have an A and I am NOT a math person at all.
Being that Math is already a hard subject for me, Prof. Powers make it so much harder. I had to contact her multiple times to ask questions and concerns and she was always rude and condescending. Her grading was very strict and her assignments were extremely hard. She posts no reminders for assignments so be sure to know due dates.
The bottom line is if you care about understanding the curriculum she'll care about you understanding it as well. If you expect her to magically implant the rules, formulas, and equations in your head without putting in the effort you're gonna have a bad time. Homework is entirely tied to your understanding. When you grasp the lesson you can stop.
Do not take it!
If you are a poor test taker, be prepared to fail. Tests are way harder than any homework given and graded as majority of the grade. You will not receive any grades back in a timely fashion so you will have no clue as to your current understanding of the topics leading up to the tests. She is also very rude when you ask for help.
RUN If you want to fail statistic just take her class the worst professor ever she always comes late doesn't have clear office hours, always spends half of the class talking about her family and then gets you a super difficult exam, never explains the lecture properly. At the beginning you would think its easy but trust me by the 4&5 exam it won't.
This has got to be the worst math course I have ever taken. She takes points off for the tiniest reasons, and the way she words the math problems is so strange. In a homework I am currently working on, she wrote "A 22 negative ft ladder....How high does the ladder reach on the building?" I typically enjoy math but this course was terrible.
Very bad teacher, shows up 5-10 minutes late to class, even on quiz and test days. Gives you a ton of videos to watch and a homework. Then you show up she goes over the homework, slightly touches on the notes,On quizzes and tests points were taken off for the smallest things. If you don't do work her way it's wrong even if you're right. DONT TAKE!
I'm a student athlete and need to maintain 2.0, this teacher graded the first few things and I sat at a 82% the entire semester until the end which I was then magically at a 68% she never grades anything on time. She shows up late, and marks points for the smallest things. Unless your life is math and you have no obligations beside it, STAY AWAY!
Had 90+% all year then after the W out period she changed the curriculum to paper and took off for every little thing. Only class I never got an A in, ruined my 4.0. Stay away! Most likely the teacher who brags about her kids failing. Plus male students and other female students like myself, would spend up to 10 minutes locked out b4 she showed.
She doesn't grade anything, she does not have clear office hours, she assigns two videos that range around 10-20 minutes each class, and the videos have an ear piercing ringing in the background so it isn't watchable. She doesn't understand your personal life at all, my car broke down She still gave a 0 on a quiz!!! DO NOT TAKE THERESA POWERS CLASS
If you are bad at tests, DO NOT TAKE ANY OF POWERS CLASSES! Bad communication, two videos and a 10-20 question hard worksheet for hw each class. She doesn't understand personal life, and she takes points off for the smallest things possible. Atrocious, joke of a teacher.
Horrible teacher, didn't grade anything till the last 2 weeks of class. All lectures are old, poor quality videos. Tests are much harder then the homework and she nitpicks taking points off tests. Barely any office hours. Wish we read her reviews before registering for her class. Avoid this teacher at all costs!
I feel compelled to share my experience with this instructor to help others make informed decisions. During my time as a student, starting in 2019, I consistently observed a lack of support and engagement from her as an educator.
By far the worst teacher ive come across while attending HVCC. If you can avoid taking her class, stay clear.
The hate for this professor isn't deserved. Keep in mind that she's teaching remedial math, so the rating is kind of skewed. I took MATH110 last year with barely knowing any math, and she helped me get back up to speed. Taking Calc1 right now and doing good. You need to actually put in effort to learn the math.
I took a Math150 Summer course with Professor Powers. She was terrible. I had to argue with her to get the barest of my accommodations, and at the time of my withdrawal from her course, she had still refused to provide me with any type of class recording, stating that recorded zoom sessions are controversial. Get outta here with that!
I had this professor for not even two weeks and had to drop her online class. Her online assignments, online textbook assignments along with poorly recorded lectures made the learning pace her set feel impossible.
She sounded very robotic and had no real feedback to give. It was hard not to fall asleep
Do NOT take this professor!! As someone who isn't great at math, she makes things more complicated than necessary, is a really tough grader, gives LOTS of homework every week, and is super behind on grading which makes it incredibly difficult to see how you're doing in the class (doesn't grade for weeks at a time). Not great at responding to emails
Don't even think about taking her class. the tests and homework are twice as hard as what she actually teaches. She also doesn't allow make-up work if you miss class, and there's no extra credit or anything to help your grade. She doesn't update grades.
She gave lots of homework, with a quiz attached, and textbook readings every week. Be prepared to spend lots of time working on just math assignments. If you plan your time accordingly, you could get some of the work done during the week and have some work to do over the weekend. Her explanations were also not the greatest; they never made sense.
