Mrs. Stovall is very difficult to take. Do not take her for english. You will fail no matter what you do and how hard you try.
This teacher is impossible to please. She has her favorites and I was not one of them. She acts like she wants all of us to fail and that is what I did. I do not recomend this teacher to anyone. Very hard to pass her class.
If you have trouble in english I strongly suggest to not take Miss Stoval. She is very stern, strict. I think she means well but dont know how to because she lacks people skills. I promise You you will not pass her class. Try another English professor.

I did not know how to write an essay before taking Mrs. Stovall's class. I learned that I am responsible for my education. I really admire Mrs. Stovall for having an organized class even though some of the class hated being asked do homework every day. She is not a teacher for people who do not want to learn.

Mrs. Stovall is passionate of her teaching.She is a very great helpful person who wants all her students to pass, but of course students have to put effort, determenation.I know for a fact that she will help you to become a better writer. In her class you have to work for your grade she will not lie to you instead she will tell you how it is.
She never gave me the chance from the start. She picked me out on the 1st day and treated me unfairly for no reason. It got so bad that I reported her and was pulled from the class and placed into another. I'm much happier.
Worst professor ive ever had by far! I tryed asking for help and pretty much got nothing back from her all she would say is come in durring office hours, guess what some of us have jobs and previous arangments that we can reschedule around and coming to class early wasn't an option either. The class started with 30 + students and ended with 8 out of that 8 3/4 of us felt like we had little better then cs in the class overall NEVER take her unless you want ur gpa to drop dramaticly big mistake
UMMMM...... the WORST professor in the world. She says one thing but then when she grades your paper she changes what she said. She is very unclear. Her syllabus is useless. The end of the semester after I worked so hard just to pass she tells me "I dont know how to put this in a nice way, but I expected better." I felt like my hardest was nothing.
This is the worst possible professor in the year. Her syllabus is about as useful as a handy man with no arms. She's flip flops on everything she's said so far. She's rude. She makes up stuff as she goes along. You will fail this class for sure. She has mentioned a whopping total of 5 people who have passes this garbage. MOST TRASH PROFESSOR EVER!!
She is a misunderstood teacher. A lot of people really don't like her. They don't really c that she is very passionate about her work nd she wants all of her students 2 excel on their own terms. She will help u if u really need it, but have 2 really try first. She wants you to learn it on your own if you can. Coming to her should be a last resort.

I did struggle in this class but all my struggles were of my own fault. in the end i got a C but i'm actually proud i was able to get a c in the class. Homework homework homework!! you have to do it. Don't skip assignments like i did sometimes. Also warning: Book usage is very high. You must buy the stewart pidd book for 101. Good professor overall

Good teacher. I struggled in the beginning, but it got better when I went to ask for help. DO THE HOMEWORK! If you don't do the work you will not pass her class. She's way nicer when you go to office hrs SO GO! And do the Journals. The 5 points there worth really add up! So do the WORK, READ AND GO TO CLASS!!
Professor Stovall is a wonderful teacher I took her for both English 49 and 50. She is a bit strict, but as long as you follow her instructions and go to class you will definitely pass her class.
Professor Stovall is an amazing instructor. It is absolutely vital to do all the homework and journals; without doing the assignments, there is no way of passing her class. The key is to follow directions to the "T" and ask questions when necessary. Stovall is more than willing to explain any aspect that may appear confusing. Absolutely amazing!!

Stovall seemed excellent in the beginning of the semester; I even believed I would sincerely enjoy every minute of this class. However, as the sememster continues, her true colors come out. She is ignorant and judgemental. On several occasions it seemed like she was trying to embarass students (I'm not talking about me). Recommendation: AVOID HER!

I learned so much from Doctor Stovall's class. There was a lot of work but well worth the knowledge you receive. To succeed in her class you must ask questions and go to her office hours! She is a very nice and fair teacher. Definately one of the best teachers at MJC.

Doctor Stovall is extremely bad teacher. She does know what she is talking about the when it comes to execution of the matarial she fails. She has too many restrictions on every single assignment so if you want to learn something in her class you wont. You will BS in most of her homework. If you love essays take her class otherwise AVOID her class.

Dr. Stovall is one of the best professors that I have had. She makes herself available to her students. You can tell she is passionate about English. I recommend her class to everyone because after being in this class I feel like I learned nothing in high school. It is a lot of work but totally worth it. You get what you give.

Dr. Stovall is on of the best professors I have ever had at MJC. She really knows what she is talking about, and wants her students to really delve into the material - not just read the words on the page. She is so inspirational and a joy to have in the classroom. She is tough, but I highly recommend taking her class. She is awesome!

Dr Stovall is one of the best teachers. She is really structured. Her essays are difficult, but you can definitely pass if you follow her essay structure and go to her office hours. I recommend taking English 50 with her first, that is why I did so well in English 101 with her. The KEY is to follow directions. ASK QUESTIONS!
Her class was fun and interesting even tho English is not my first language (its 4th language). Fallow her format and read your book and you will pass it! If I did it trust me you will too. She helped a lot and was really kind. She does give a little too much homework sometimes, but overall she is helpful.
I had a terrible experience in this class. For some reason Stovall didn't like me. She kicked me out of class for not having my hmwk one day. It was humiliating. The next class 3 kids didn't have hmwk and nothing happened to them. I tried hard in this class and still got a bad grade.

Her words in class will motivate you to be your best. unbelievably helpful. if you have a problem and it is on a Sunday and you email her she will call you! Yes! she is that dedicated. She is a decent teacher, but the homework is just absolutely time consuming... it is ridiculous that this much homework is given, and it has little to no point about english. The on course is a waste of time, and the book is a waste of time..
I can say she is truly a genuine person and Dr. Stovall is a great storyteller when giving examples BUT the homework is tedious and she says as long as you follow the directions to the essay outline you'll be fine... but I feel like she is a HARD grader especially for a class like 49... lets hope I pass her class. but at least she's nice
I took her class.It is not for slackers. There is a great amount of homework. I liked the class because she challenged me to look deep inside myself,and discover how I can be in the way of my own success on my pursuit for a higher education. I recommend her highly it was a life changing experience for me.
She was a difficult teacher. I new from the very begining she had favorites; it was very obviously. SHe would kick students out and then let others stay, even though they all forgot the homework. She ridiculed me in front of the entire class, and kicked me out on the final for not having a journal entry. On the final!!! She failed me that day.
She's awful. She makes the class more about psychology than English. Then she expects you to read 3 books and recall everything. Her essays aren't graded too hard, but she's one of many MJC English professor's who make remedial English into a difficult subject. She'll at least teach the basics. Most professors here don't for some idiotic reason.

She cannot explain instructions at all. The first day of class people were sitting on the floor because it was so crowded. On the last day of class there was only seven people. Ask her a Q on how to do something and she would say "you can do whatever you want." Everything you learn is from the book. DON'T take her class, very tough grader as well.

Her essay outline is ridiculous. she expects you to memorize it for every essay you Take in class which to her should take u 40mins or less. Easy book for homework but you have to copy everything down;waste of paper & $. if u want to pass, u have to pretend that's the only class u have.

I admit Stovall is tough. But to be honest, if you are a good student who takes notes well, communicates with the professor, and actually cares about your grade, you will do fine in this class. The only textbook we had was the Stewart Pidd book and it was fill ins mostly. And know your QUIZ PARAGRAPHS!!!!!

She's a perfectionist and will grade hard. If you do exactly what she wants, you will pass but it's not easy.
You will cover a lot of information if you do all the assignments. She has a way of letting you know you are not spending enough time on assignments given. I have learned more in her class with a barely passing grade (sometimes failing) then I thought possible. I hope she gives out more extra credit assignments (praying).
I just can't believe I passed her class lol Her own syllabus says that her class is difficult & that you may not pass. Well she was right, it was really difficult but I love a challenge :) She made Eng 50 a breeze! She taught me a lot especially in writing, she's a great and a very intelligent instructor, Just follow the exact writing outline;)
This class was hard if you were not putting in work. A lot of people complained about her, but if you did all the homework that she assigned you would be fine. The essays were done from an easy to follow prompt, and there were a lot of study guides. I learned a lot and she was really helpful!

Poor choice I made in taking it with her. Still confused if it's a Guidance or English class due to the journals. Very strict on grading,if you miss a detail on a paper you might get taken points or get a 0. She assumes we don't have a life,jobs,or homework from other classes. Don't take another class if you want to take it with her because Stress!

College isn't easy: Finish assignments on time, be present in class, follow instructions, journals are great writing exercises, missing assignments are detrimental for any class, most essays are scripted, which makes it easy & gets you used to essay writing structure, work you put in will reflect your grade, as anything in life. I'm out of words...

I took Dr. Stovall for summer school and received an A, and English isn't my best or favorite subject. Was the class stressful? Did it require a lot of work? Yes but because of her I was able to pass English 101 easily. Do as you're told, she babysits you most of the way on how she wants essays, attend every workshop, and do ALL your journals. Easy
Honestly the first two months were very frustrating. The essays are the most important in her English 100 course. She wants you to get the structure of how to write an essay correctly, once you get the structure the rest is easy. since her Engl 100 course is pass/no pass on every assignment, you will not have to worry about letter grades.
Dr. Stovall's class definitely is not an easy one. However, out of all of my English classes, I have learned the most from hers. She really makes sure you understand the proper structure of writing an essay. Thanks to her, writing essays are now a piece of cake. I highly recommend if you actually want to LEARN.

Very nice lady. As long as you do the reading and follow her format exactly how she presents it, you'll be fine. Getting an A will not be easy. Lots of homework, reading and writing, but as long as you keep up and show up to class you will learn a lot of useful information that you'll take with you in future classes.

Their is a lot of reading in this class, but so worth it. The true meaning of the American Dream is actually learned and understanding what you read and explaining a main point. Wonderful professor.
Miss Stovall is a nice person however really hard grader, it is extremely hard to get a passing grade, I would choose a different English teacher.

Their is a lot of reading in this class, if you are not ready to read and do a lot of homework please dont take this class. At the start of the year my classroom was full of students by the end of the semester most of the class had left and only a handful of students were remaining. You would thank me later for my advice.

Shocked reading the bad rates. Had a great experience in her class and learned a lot. She takes her time to explain if anyone had questions. She also tries to challenge you in her class but helps you if its too challenging. She would delay due dates on assignments bc people didnt turn in things on time & gave them the chance to turn it in.

No matter how hard you try, this teacher just docks points for everything. Her instructions are extremely difficult to understand. Multiple slides with different directions for the same assignment. She'll say "chose 2 articles" then the next slide for the SAME assignment "choose 3 articles" When asked to clarify, she says just follow the directions
I would first like to mention that Dr. Stovall is a very smart and kind lady, and I admire her as a person. However, her class is very difficult. There are so many assignments that pile up, and I often stayed up into the wee hours of the morning just to finish them in time. Taking this class was a very stressful experience for me.
When this class started, the class was full of students, by the end of the semester, there were only three students left. The reason why most students leave is that she is a really tough grader.

Dr. Stovall is a brilliant person and teacher. Be sure to take notes in class and read all material. She posts very informative examples and material which will assist you. Her goal is to help her students learn. Do ALL assignments and FOLLOW directions. This class will strengthen writing skills to assist in future classes.

Do not take English class with her, she will explain assignments right after grading it, and strict grader in essays, unfair grading. Once you turn in the essay or right before one day for the due date of essay she will give you the instructions.
This class was difficult. I struggled to understand what Dr. Stovall wanted from the assignments. As the semester went on she stopped giving feedback. Half of the time she wouldnt explain the assignments until the day before they were due. A lot of the prompts and instructions are contradictory, when asked she just says refer back to the prompt.
Horrible grader! I am taking this course to fulfill a requirement at my University and I have never struggled with one of my professors as much as I do with her. Stovall is excellent if you are majoring in English. If not, avoid her. She's extremely critical, contradicts herself with instructions and YOU pay the price for it, and she acts like she's teaching at some prestigious university, not MJC. In one week there's a midterm and essay due, AND she wants you to have started the research paper reading.
Do NOT take this class. She is very confusing and contradictory with her directions. She is very condescending and does not care about her students. She found my number on my account and called me the first week of class to tell me that I needed to get my crap together because I waited till the last day to do an assignment. Really unprofessional.
Dr. Stovall is a great individual outside of teaching. She seems very nice and respectable but her class? Terrible. She is not specific enough on her instructions for example, theres 4 readings for One week and she tells us to Do a response but not which one to do it on. Just a very hard class and never got an essay grade above maybe a C.

Terrible teacher! If you end up in her class drop it while you can. I submitted an essay as a PDF instead of word file and failed me on the assignment even though it wasnt stated in any of the direction that i followed to a T. I hope she learns how to teach for the sake of her students. Her grades are unfair and shes god awful at explaining.

As a history major, Ive written so many papers and I love writing them. Dr. Stovalls class made me dread writing. Her assignment expectations were not clear and were often contradictory. I also had issues that I needed to email her for. After the first two I sent and got responses for, I never heard from her again despite trying to contact her.
I took Theresa Stovall's English 100 course two years ago, and she was a horrible professor. She was rude, short with people, and completely unhelpful. After taking this class I put off taking English 103 for two years because I thought I hated English, but it turns out it was just a complete and total incompetent professor, and now I love English.
If you take this class do not expect clear feedback & do not expect to get any assistance. I would strongly recommend finding a study buddy or two. Be prepared for a lot of reading and covering the same thing repeatedly. If you need extra help understanding I would suggest taking this class with a different teacher.
Be prepared for no assistance and a lot of reading. If you are the type that sometimes needs that extra help understanding, take this class with a different teacher. Grading is unclear and I was informed the Constitution was not a credible source... The readings are all the same(politics & cases).
she wants you to only focus on her and her class. she doesn't care that you have more classes in one semester. she posts assignments the same day and expects a three page prompt by midnight
took Eng100 with her summer 2022. As someone who had a lot of trouble with motivation esp w/ online courses, this wasn't the prof for me, at least at the time. Late work wasn't accepted and grading was pretty tough. The course I took was accelerated so that was also a factor. She seemed cool to me though and I did enjoy her instructional videos.
She assigns a lot of reading so be prepared for that. She is also strict and straightforward with the essays you have to do. Tough Grader.
The class is very cutthroat, figure it out on your own, read until your eyes and mind give out. Would stay away from her classes if you can help it.
This class has ruined my perfect GPA. She behaves as if it's your only class and like you have all the time in the world for only her work. I wrote good essays yet she gave me Cs on most of them. Tough graders are one thing but she is ridiculous. I have As in every class but hers. Most material is geared to her obvious political affiliation.
She is not bad, but if you love to read definitely take her. Yes she is difficult, and her grading is pretty strict depending on what your working on. She does expect too much, even though we have other courses to worry about. I do not recommend this class to anybody unless you absolutely need it.
The Worst English teacher ever! Not considerate at all. Would expect you to do an assignment she assigned 2 hours ago. Thinks you only have her class and not others. Do yourself a favor and not take this professor.

EXTREMELY NITPICKY. never met a teacher who needs things THIS specific. I failed many assignments and essays. I had her online, so very little help. Lots of long assignments. you can get MANY things wrong, and she can miss thing that are correct and mark you wrong. no leeway, and no creativity. if you don't understand it her way, its wrong.
I had her online, basically impossible. It doesn't matter how well you follow her SENTENCE-BY-SENTENCE prompt/check-lists, she'll still find things to fail you on. Prompts are EXTREMELY confusing, the answers have to be EXACTLY what she is looking for. I would GOOGLE answers and STILL get it wrong because it's not worded EXACTLY how she wants it
Says her class is easy as long as you show up but then expects high quality work and gets upset when things are not done her way.
She was the worst professor ever. If you love to fail classes and love unfair professors, I would recommend her class.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. So difficult for no reason. She will nitpick every essay and grades so tough even if you follow the format perfectly. I had way too many breakdowns over this. It's literally just english. Begging you all, don't take this class. I wish I dropped it.
She is a very admirable professor however she is very unfair in her class. I stayed up until 2am nights in a row for the essays I would try my hardest on, only to be accused of "using AI" solely because she claims her AI trackers are "very reliable". I would tell her she could view the entire history on docs proving my honesty but she would not.
Tough grader who expects perfection. Grab a helpful study tool like Unstuck study alongside the free textbook to nail the high expectations. Attend every class and be prepared for nit-picky feedback.
Run!! Pick anyone else unless you want to loose your mind!! English was my favorite subject. You will never receive an A on an essay in her class. She gives so many assignments you'll be drowning in this class.

Hello everyone, I should have checked her on this app before I took her class. I'm currently in my second week, and I already feel overwhelmed. She expects every assignment to be perfect, and even though I followed the outline, I still haven't received a 10/10 on any assignment.If you can, drop the class as soon as possible!
After going half the semester, I was trying to suffer through it. But this past week made me realize I can't rationalize staying in it. She is extremely difficult to work with and does not respond to emails much. You can ask her for help, but she is only willing to help you during her office hours. I would NOT recommend ENGL103 with this professor.
Worst professor I've had so far. I follow her very confusing essay prompts and no matter how hard I try to perfect it, I still don't receive the grade I deserve. She also flagged me for AI on my first essay and I offered to show my word doc version history and still didn't bother to look. Just don't bother taking her she's not a good professor.
A lot of her students come in for tutoring and I fully understand the negative reviews now. I dropped her class in time and I'm glad I did. Her essay structure is insanely rigid, it's not impossible but you'll need to put every sentence exactly how she asks. And yes, there is a big issue with essays being flagged as AI when they're not.
Professor Stovall made English my hardest class despite taking 3 STEM courses. She doesn't accept late work, even for emergencies, and grades unfairly. Worst of all, she accuses students of using AI without proper proof. Save yourself the stress and avoid this class if you can!!
The most challenging class thus far, but I'm going to tell you how to get an A: 1. Go to office hours. You HAVE to if you want a good grade. Ask for clarity for upcoming assignments/essays. Ask about formatting. Give her an example of how you would do it & take the feedback and correct it. 2. Do not accept any corrections from editor in Microsoft.
This class is VERY political. Every single assignment had something to do with Trump which is annoying because we are not in this class to learn about Trumps policies. This is an English class and we should be learning about English.
So this class was alright. Definitely not what an English class is supposed to be, especially an advanced one. All the assignments were SOOOO political. There are so many ways to teach some of this information without bringing up politics. The class was pretty easy but I really didn't like how every assignment had to do with Trump.
Every paper I turned in barely passed. Her feedback is NOT helpful whatsoever, and she will take points off if it's "Not in MLA format." And by taking points off, it'll bring your score down to a C. She will not explain what to change in your next paper to get a better score. The highest grade she gave out for the final essay was a C, avg was 58.5.
If you dont have the same take away as her you will get a C at best. No im not kidding she will give you a 14/20 if you dont get the same take away from the reading as her. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. You wont learn anything and you will probably fail.
Everybody's experience here has been mine. She didn't grade any assignments until Sunday of week 3.Gave me 14/20 on everything. Her notes on graded work stated what was wrong, never said why. Never put how it could be better. She said as long as we had direct quotes/support for work, she wouldn't grade harshly if she didn't agree. That was a lie.
She takes forever to grade things and is strict on grading. You have read and write a lot. She also does not give good feedback. Wouldn't recommend this teacher to anyone.
Do not take this class. I had a 4.0 GPA until this course. I gave everything I had and I still received a C. Worst class I have ever taken at MJC.
I never forgot this teacher after so many years of taking her class. Fast forward to today and I decided to look her up to see if others shared the same experience and I was correct. Sucks that people had to share similar experience as me. I remember doing everything she asked for and she would still take points off and not teach me the “right way”
This class was very tough, mostly because the professor was extremely strict. I lost points just for not going to class, even when I tried to keep up with the work. She also said she would drop us from the class if we didn't turn in more than three assignments or if we missed class and the assignments were graded really hard too.
This teacher will take forever to grade assignments. She does not answer even the simplest questions over email, only refers you to her office hours or tells you to check the lectures which are not much help. Multiple questions on multiple tests and quizzes are worded wrong or have typing errors & she is very condescending when meeting over zoom.
Her grading was genuinely insane. She gave no feedback on how to improve, even when asked. Most students have a life away from classes whether it's work or something else, we cannot take time away from our schedules to attend her odd zoom hours. She made me want to quit school. A warning to anyone wanting to stay sane: DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES.
I don't know why MJC hired this lady. While in this class, I have not received a single 100% grade on any one of the assignments. she mostly gives out 14/20 from what I've read here and from what my friends taking her class have said. She also says things are AI when they aren't, even after providing notes and other material to prove it is not.
This class still haunts me today after completing my degree. Not only will you not learn a single thing but even if you give 1000% you will either not pass or barely make it. Extremely tough grader, hard to reach, and absolutely no feed back on any assignments. This is the only course I received a C in my entire academic career. DO NOT TAKE HER
