Great guy. Class is very hard, but he tries to make it interesting and do-able.
course was VERY different from Math 211, definitely not an easy course, but if you keep up with the homework, try to understand the material in lectures, it can be very rewarding learning with Thi. the lecture material is also more difficult than the exams! don't be scared off by the class average!
Math271 has a little bit difficult but very interesting. Thi is a excellent instructor, explain everything clear and responsible for student. Some my friend from other class told me Thi teaching is not good, I told him because u r idiot :P If u can not learn Math well from Thi, u had better drop all your Math courses!
This guy is sweet. He's probably the best first-year math teacher at the university. As long as you actually care enough to listen to him in lecture, you'll do fine. Be careful of the final though, it's a lot harder than the midterm or quizzes.
Thi is really helpful and this class is an easier pmat and it is a two hour block but goes by quick and this allows him to teach slow and for you to ask questions. He is really personal likes to know everyones name so he makes the class interesting
He is such a smart man, such an amazing teacher. He knows exactly where most students go wrong and is so helpful. He knows the students by name, even though we had a huge lecture. He's very good for MATH 221 as well.
Dr.Dinh is an excellent professor. Easy to understand and clearly cares about students that are trying to understand the material. Read the textbook, go to Dr.Dinh's lectures with a desire to learn actively(as opposed to mindlessly writing notes), and you will have no troubles with this course.
This guy saved my rear. I was doing first year engineering and couldnt understand a word my prof said, so I skipped out to go to this guy's lectures.
Amazing Prof. Clear English. Explains everything for even an idiot, or someone not great in math, to understand. Made the class enjoyable to attend.
Thi Dinh is an excellent professor. He teaches very well with enthusiasm and clarity. The textbook is MANDATORY and is it by far the BEST MATH TEXTBOOK I have ever pruchased. Thi expects alot from his students though. Like you can't slack off like crazy and expect to pass his class. He will "kill you" (fail you, class joke). Totally recommended!
Thi was a great professor! Excellent explanations, and examples! Very enthusiastic and overall an awesome prof!
Thi Dinh is one of the most engaging, fun teacher's I've had. His teaching is very clear, and he's great for helping you understand difficult subjects. From what I've, he is just as good with any other course that he teaches.
I took this course one year ago. My original prof. sucks(even though he's a supper nice guy) so I switch to Thi's section. Om My gOD!! He is just amazing! He's lecture is so interesting even liner algebra is hard! He jokes a lot, but he also make all the math so clear!!!luv him
Thi is the best prof for Discrete Math you ever find! Very passionate about his subject and knows it very well! Use of the text is amndatory if you want to pass this class. Expect to put a lot of hours into it.
This proffessor was HORRIBLE! I hear a lot of good things about his discrete math class--but never take him with linear algebra!!! He doesn't care about the students, his tests are brutal, and he pampers the smartest kids in his class. DON'T TAKE CLASSES WHITH THI!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Dinh is a very engaging and straightforward instructor. He covers the material thoroughly and encourages an understanding.
Best math teacher I've come across. Sit at the front of the room, and answer his questions. Thi doesn't pamper the 'smart kids', just the people who participate in lecture. I jokingly bet him in the first week that he couldn't remember the names of everyone in the class, on the last day of class he pointed out each student and said their name.
Great prof.
Thi is a genious and a marvelous teacher at that. He changed the way i thought and most importantly strengthened my ability of free thought and questioning which i personally believe is the most important skill in life. Thank you Dr. Thi Dinh i am inpired by the way you teach.
He is a great teacher and makes it really easy to understand the subject. Assignments and exams were excessively hard and graded even worse (but they were created and graded by another professor - Dr. Sands).
If you can, take him. Period. He knows what the students need to know and how to enforce these concepts. If you listen, pay attention and put effort to understand and not just follow along to what he teaches, you will do great in his course.
He's a pretty intimidating person, but very passionate about his Discrete Math course. He's taught for at least 20(!) years and can explain everything very clearly. Sometimes he's a little bit harsh and blunt, but honestly, I think that's a pretty good way to teach people. He WILL drill the most important things in your head.
he's an aweosme prof. even though i got a pretty bad mark in that class i'm 100% sure i would've failed it with another teacher. hes was so much more interesting than my other profs and he really has a passion. way to go!!
Strict although is very helpful and accomodating. He is able to clearly put across his message and his accent is quite endearing. He is a fantastic person and I miss him already since taking my other math course!
he will scare you the first time you see him in class, swear, throw stuff on the ground, always had his hand in his pants pocket ( you can totally hear his keys and coins in his pocket lol) but HE IS very nice, he WILL help you if you ask him for HELP, and he WILL answer you :D people should take his class, really entertaining and fun!!!
Great proff!!
It takes a little while to warm up to him, but T is actually a nice prof, and helpful if you ever have a question. He can seem blunt and impatient with you sometimes but that's just the way it is; it's not personal. However, otherwise he's an ok prof. I find his lectures really hard to follow and I don't really absorb much from them.
This guy is the bomb, take any course you can with him. He jokes around a lot about being scary but he is very dedicated to making sure students understand material
Possibly my favourite prof ever. Really worked hard to make clear examples and had some great jokes.
He was a good teacher, but his quizes were a bit tough. His midterms were from everything you did on the quizes. So practice those. Awesome teacher like I said, funny, but tough.
I wasn't actually in his lecture section but I was not understanding my own prof's lectures (got 60% on the first quiz), so I started attending his lectures and I actually understood almost everything he said. On the second quiz I got 100%. Also he was very nice to me even though he knew I wasn't in his class. He is like my savior
He's a very entertaining prof who likes to get to know his students. Stay away from the first two rows if you can't handle him teasing you a bit. Made me look forwards to coming to lectures and explained the material crystal clear. He had easy and simple quizzes, but his final was really difficult.
This guy is one of the best profs ever.Attendance is mandatory. He doesn't use blackboard so if you're the type to skip lectures then this course is not for you. The quizzes are fairly easy if you're up to date with his lectures but the midterm and final are extremely hard. This course is definately not a GPA booster. Do lots of practice questions.
Good prof. Explains things very well. He comes off as a scary man, telling you to kill things off and such but he's funny. His quizzes are moderately easy, midterm super easy but a hard final. Stay up to date with the supplementary problems and you'll get a good mark.
Thi's great. Teaches complex ideas so that anyone can learn them. Interesting lectures. Insight beyond the book. Course is tough, and you are expected to put in a lot of work. If you don't put in the work then Thi "will kill you". Spends a class showing how to solve each assignments, as long as you don't write it down, so you understand it.Amazing.
Thi explains everything to the best of his ability, bu this class was just so hard! most of the class were failing by the end of the term. All in al, he's a good guy who wants to help his students succeed. Also, he's hilarious, and he usually has pretty good notes. I'd recommend him =)
Not too difficult. Do the practice problems he tells you to do.
Thi is probably one of the best, and most hilarious profs I have ever had! My only complaint I have against him is he is a brutally hard marker when is comes to proofs. However, do let that discourage you, when you get used to his style they become easy, and he is an incredible teacher! Take him whenever possible!
Good teaching but hard marker and quizzes are not fair.In W2011,the quizzes on Tues are the same exactly the quizzes on pre semesters. All students studied on those and got higher marks than students on Thu quizzes because he changed questions.Midterm the same exactly pre midterm. Final are all questions in quizzes and midterm. I don't like this.
Its supposed to be a hard class but he made it SO EASY. Don't worry if you don't do well on quizzes or mid term. The final was basic concept questions that he did in class. Make sure you go to class and understand what he talks about. No need for textbook.
Great prof. He marks really hard on the exams, but teaches like a super hero. He actually made the effort to learn our names and include us in the lectures every day. He repeats the things of high importance multiple times to make sure we understand it. His quizzes are super easy but help you learn. Take Thi for this course!!
Thi is a talented teacher and clearly gifted in math. Strongly recommended to anyone who simply likes math. Attend all lectures.
Average Lectures. Worthless for everything else. No Solved Problems No Website No old exams or tests with solutions No Help without a healthy does of attitude. Do the recommended problems from text that is the only thing he provides that tends to show up on tests. This prof does the minimum only to earn his pay he does absolutely nothing else
He is a very good teacher, explains everything nicely. The only bad thing is that he is a really really hard marker. He doesnt give part marks as easily. Good thing he didnt mark my quizzes or else I would have dont bad on them.
Decent prof, does a poor job in engaging all students and subject matter is borign and dry. Does poor job in effcetively making class interesting. As mentioned...only communicates in class with "Front Row" students. Ignores the Rest. Overall I was not satisfied and therefore give him a "Poor" rating.
Great prof, explains concepts multiple ways. Interacts with students, usually in the "front rows"; so be there if you like it, away if you don't. Quizzes and tests are relatively easy if you study his examples; he tests on the basics you NEED to know. Idk what about previous years, but Thi will post old exams if asked.
He is a fantastic teacher. Makes class enjoyable to go to, quite easy to understand, and he loves math so his explainations are always great. Explains things multiple ways, just make sure you attend class as he doesn't post notes online and textbook isn't too helpful.
Amazing professor! My favourite of the semester. He is a very honest marker, and you get the grade you deserve. He's very funny and sweet, even though he can seem intimidating. You need to study and put a lot of effort in this course, but it will pay off the in the end. Quizzes and final was fair. I'm going to miss Thi!
i heard tons of good things abouot mr Thi, but here is what im only going to say, IF you want to have a brutal semester, and if you want to have a low mark on an easy course like math 211, take it with MR Thi ;), if reading this wasnt enough, then go ahead :)
Very good teacher. Got teaching excellence award during my semster too! =], at first u wont understand him, but afterwards, u will LOVE him, VERY VERY GOOD teacher!!
naturally i am gud in math, i find it really straight forward. BUT coming to math 211 with thi din, it became a different story, he made me hate math cos he was really bad at explaining and just being ablet to teach. hard exams also. just brutal. got a C+ with lots of hard work... ...
At first I did not understand a single thing that he would say in class and I consider myself to be naturally good at Math. However by going to his office hours and asking questions my opinion on him changed completely. He actually goes out of his way to accommodate his students and help them. He's not everyones cup of tea but for me he's good.
He knows the concepts well but was hard to understand until you get over the language barrier. It was hard not to be entertained in his class. Challenging course. Textbook was harder to understand than him so go to lectures.
Amazing professor. He is a teacher first and a professor second. Most importantly he cares about your education; he went to me once after an assignment to talk to me about it and help. That's dedication I've almost never seen in a prof before. But you have to be dedicated too and have a genuine interest in whatever you're doing.
He is a good teacher. But if you dont understand something he is disrespectful at his office hours.
Professor is very knowledgable on the subject. He keeps the class entertained by having fun with some of the students so don't sit in the front unless you can handle some jokes. He is respectful if you are prepared. Dont go to his office hours without being prepared, as it will not help. stay up on recommended problems.
This guy is the REASON I passed 211. I took it once before, and dropped it. But heres the thing: You actually have to practice! Quite often he'll take quiz questions DIRECTLY from the textbook. DO THE QUESTIONS! It will make your life SO much easier.
I failed this course the first the with a diff. prof, but with Thi he made my F go to a B. He knows his stuff, but do attend lectures as he does lots of examples which will help for midterm and finals. Best prof for math 211 =]
One of my favourite professors.
best math211 teacher. definitely attend class. quizzes and midterm are easy. study practice finals and you'll ace! content is so much easier than calculus too!
One of the best math profs ever. Yes this class is hard and you will have to work, but it's not difficult. Thi makes it really fun and I'll miss this class in hindsight. Just don't fall behind. Don't take his class if you get offended easily, but otherwise he'll keep you from falling asleep.
It's math but it's all about writing stuff. Thi did a good job on guide the students on solving the question. Best prof ever!!!
I found his explanations many times better than the textbook, so attending class is recommended. Just make sure you pay attention and do the recommended exercises, I failed the first time because I started losing attention.
Thi is awesome. He explains everything extremely clearly and works to make sure you do well. Having said that, the course is fairly difficult so take it in summer or spring with a lighter course load if you can
Very easy and very interesting course. Prof is great, expains clearly. Very helpful in his office hours.
Very easy and very interesting course. Prof is great, expains clearly. Very helpful in his office hours.
Thi is not very good in my opinion. He has a certain style of teaching that some students may get but if you don't learn his way you will likely fail the class. He starts to write examples and then half way through says the rest is easy and moves on. That is not the way I learn and unfortunately he is the only prof for this term so tough luck.
All my other friends complained about their linear algebra prof, but Thi was a beauty. Made sure everybody understood what he was saying before moving on to other material. Extremely funny dude too, actually made the class enjoyable, take him if you can.
I loved how he didn't use a PowerPoint to teach! He always made sure everyone understood before moving on. Great guy, take his class if you can!
Very good professor, explains concepts very well but will occasionally just do half of an example and let you finish the rest. Watch out for the second midterm, our class average was a 58% but besides that Dinh is one of the best math profs at U of C.
good prof really funny
The best math teacher I have ever had, hands down. The course material is not easy, but he makes it simple. Make sure to attend class and do all the online assignments.
It was enjoyable during the lecture. Make sure to attend the lecture if you want higher GPA
Excellent Professor! Crystal clear explanations. He wants his students to be actively engaged in class. He forces you to work through examples with him. If you are attentive and read over his notes, you will get an A.
He is hilarious with his off-colour humour, and his explanations are clear. This class is seriously fun. But go to every class, and make sure you know the definitions word-for-word.
Hilarious, easy to approach, very enthusiastic and very clear.
Don't be afraid to ask questions. This guy loooves picking on people who asks questions (not harshly, and he makes it funny) you'll learn really well if you do. Go to his class, don't bother with the textbook IMO. Read notes, do homework, love Dinh, get A.
Nice Prof!
comedic, helpful, and realistic! makes math simpler, one of the best professors i have had yet! just remember to attend class.
I never thought I could have fun in a math class; Thi proved me wrong. Thi is just an amazing professor and I highly recommend him. One thing I really appreciated: we had one guy in my class who asked a lot of questions (sometimes with obvious answers), and Thi was very patient with him even though the class was not. I just love me some Thi Dinner.
He is one of the best professors that I ever had in this university. He provides help anywhere and any time, as long as you have the pationate to learn, he will be there. You got to listen to his class once in your life time. You will learn a lot, not only about math, about other things in life as well.
I pretty sure he's completely crazy, but he gives a great lecture.
He is a good prof, and is real good at math. He goes pretty fast and never finishes problems he does on the board. Tests were pretty tough but everybody in 211 got the same test.
Fun class, fun prof. The questions on quizes and tests are very similar to the examples done in lecture. Pay attention early on in the course!
He throws chalk, and he usually skips the calculations if they are ridiculously large. This is only a problem if you don't study.
Thi makes class interesting and he's really funny; but the class is quite difficult so be prepared. Make sure you know people to work with or assignments will kick your butt.
Be sure to goto ALL lectures! Much easier to learn from him rather than the text. Some quiz questions were taken directly from notes. Assignments are more difficult, go to his office hours for help. Only used text twice since his notes have everything. KNOW all you definitions and how to use them!
Thi was a fantastic prof! He interacted with students in class and told great stories. I used the textbook maybe twice, it just wasn't needed in his class since he taught it so well. At times he went a little fast but it wasn't too much to handle.
Fantastic prof, must take math 211 with him. Clear explanation, understand students' mind of thinking, so he will teach in the way that we can understand. ^^
Probably the best professor I've had at the U of C, certainly the best in mathematics. He is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, helpful, and makes the class very enjoyable. He has a sense of humour, and he genuinely wants everyone to succeed. Attendance is mandatory, and you have to work hard, but this is a fantastic class with Thi teaching.
Thi was fair and classes were interesting (even through 3 hour lectures). He is kind and willing to help outside of class time if you show interest in learning. He rewards students who work and are engaged, but will seem cold if you aren't interested (skip class, talk during class etc.). Best prof that i've had. Would highly recommend.
Probably one of the greatest profs I've had. Explains concepts really well and provides a fair amount of examples allowing you to create great notes to study from. Keeps the lectures interesting, and most of his examples show up again in tests.
Hilarious, keeps your attention and keeps classes interesting/funny enough to not fall asleep. If you need help to succeed, he is more than happy to help you but if you don't try in his class, then good luck.
He is an amazing prof! Does everything on the blackboard, instead of just reading off powerpoint slides. Plus, he's really entertaining, and keeps you interested in the 50 minutes you spend with him!
He's the most enthusiastic teacher i had in first year and its fun to be in his class.
Awesome teacher
Amazing prof! He does everything by hand, really easy to understand everything he does!
Thi is a decent prof- he can be hard to understand at times but overall if you listen carefully and pay attention the quality of instruction is good. Brings some comic quality to the class.
SERIOUSLY THE BEST PROF EVER. TAKE YOUR CLASS WITH HIM IF YOU CAN , JUST ATTEND THE LECTURES AND THAT IT . YOU ARE SET FOR AN A
Funny and really knowledgeable. Really enthusiastic, and he does everything by hand on the blackboard. Definitely keeps you engaged. The way the department handles the course leaves something to be desired, but I've got no complaints about him personally.
Fantastic prof! He actually uses the blackboard so you clearly understand everything! If you need extra help, be sure to go during his office hours! He seriously is the nicest prof out there.
He is a great prof. but you need to go his class and he writes on the blackboard (chalk). So you better be at the front. He's real helpful, but makes fun of you or others. Very funny. Would recommend him to you people.
Having taken calculus before, I mainly studied off of my high school notes. I felt like whenever I went to class I felt smarter before than after. He likes to prove everything, which this calculus course is not about. It pointlessly makes the content more confusing. He only uses the blackboard and has nothing posted online.
He is pretty decent professor. He wants his students to succeed. He is quite funny at times. He is very approachable. His midterms were very easy though the final was medium. I would recommend everyone to take him if you have a choice.
Very entertaining prof, explains everything and you can understand him!
BEST PROF EVER. He is funny, he writes on the blackboard instead of using powerpoints which makes it easier to learn. Much love <3
He can be funny, but he is also unorganized and outspoken. If you are one of the handful of students that he decides are worthy of his time, i'm sure he is helpful, but for the rest of the class, you might as well just stay home and read the textbook.
Amazing prof. He knows how to teach! He is slightly outspoken and intimidating. The exams are pretty easy if you attend class and actually pay attention. Although the exams were easy, he is not an easy marker. I got all the answers right, but he took off such pointless and stupid marks. Unfair in that sense, but I would still highly recommend him.
One of the best profs I've ever had. Show up for class as nothing is posted on line, he loves the chalkboard, DON'T MISS CLASS, sit close to the chalk board if you can. Assignments were extremely tough, tests OK. Made the hardest 200 level math coarse at U of C, his own words, make sense.
Very good prof. Dreaded the first lecture as it was three hours long but seconds into the class, Thi introduced himself and he was very funny and engaging. I didn't dread the course anymore. He's a good prof, keeps you interested, and very funny. Assignments were hard but this is a proofs course, they should be. Practice and study, you'll be fine.
He's a teacher who explains the CONCEPTS behind the idea. No such thing as memorization... a very essential understanding of mathematics. He's THAT teacher who can make you love mathematics by the end of the semester. He explains everything from the base, and slowly goes ahead with it. He CAN teach!
Thi is great! He made a difficult subject much easier to grasp. Obviously a very experienced teacher, and he sincerely wants his students to do well. He can be little frightening, but once you realize he's only joking it becomes very entertaining.
This is a hard course, but Thi makes sure that everyone understands the material and he makes lecture stimulating. Really amazing teacher and always willing to lend a hand or an ear in order to make the semester better for you. He also makes you work for your grades, but doesn't make it impossible to do so. Made a tough topic enjoyable for me.
You have to understand and know a lot of the concepts before you take the class. He brushes through the topics and explains theorems instead; Sometimes a topic is barely covered. The tests are challenging as is expected from the 265, I recommend taking 249 if you have the choice.
Thi is an amazing prof! He makes sure that his students get the concepts. He explains the concepts very well! Also, if you do not understand something in his class, he is always willing to help in his office hours! Midterms and Final are not too bad, as long as you do your homework work sheets. I would definitely recommend him :)
He is one of the best professors I've ever had. Hilarious and really knows his stuff. Would definitely take another math course with him.
Intimidating to start but really happy to help students out. Show up to class and pay attention and you'll do fine
Thi is one of the best profs I've ever had! He's really engaging and makes one of the hardest 200-level math courses easier to learn and do well in. You do have to put the work in in order to do well and attendance is mandatory because he doesn't post slides.
thi is really hilarious and super genius but he sometimes shows off his extensive knowledge and talks about stuff that doesnt really pertain to class material. he isnt a bad prof tho, still prepares you for exams and answers your questions in lecture. he may be a bit rude at times but who isnt! he doesnt post notes cause he wants u to go to class
I would have failed if I didn't take calc before. He shows off his knowledge, doesn't really explain, does not write out the answer but uses picturesgraphs instead. He is funny but its hard to ask questions as he can be a bit rude. He uses the blackboard for notes, so sit up close. Need to listen and write what he speaks rather than what he writes
The course is extremely difficult, but Thi makes it a lot easier. He is a hilarious guy and would also be able to beat Chuck Norris and Jackie Chan in a fight.
Good prof. Attend classes and you're set.
Thi is probably one of the best math profs at uofc. Take calculus and 271 with and you will know why.
Generally speaking, everything he says makes more sense if you have a mind for math, but if you don't, keeping up with the textbook & assignments in conjunction with his lectures is definitely a good idea. If you don't understand, don't be afraid to raise your hand and ask a question; he praises students for asking for help. Great prof.
All around amazing prof.
He's an all around great prof. He's pretty funny and is good at teaching using only whiteboards and simple materials. He can help you understand exactly what you need to do to get a good grade. Sure his classes are fairly hard but I didn't pay to have all my courses be a review of high school.
excellent instructor
Took it in summer. I learned a lot from this course and as I progressed to future courses in computer science I used all the stuff I learned in Math 271. Thi is an amazing professor and even though I didn't understand somethings sometime I still enjoyed his class. I highly recommend that you take PHIL 279 (formal logic) before you take this class.
Amazing prof! Dont take Math 271 with anyone else. He will make you work but you will never be bored in lecture because he is so funny. You will learn so much from him.
My favorite professor in first year ENGG so far :D the class notes you take will be very valuable for doing homework questions and studying for that final.
Thi is honestly one of the best profs I've had thus far. He's a calculus genius, he's funny, and he's really helpful if you have questions. 10/10 would recommend.
Amazing prof. He is hilarious and his lectures will never bore you. He makes discreet math very easy to learn.
He's very intimidating at first, but don't take it personally he's only trying to help. Make use of his office hours!!!! He's extremely helpful and not at all intimidating when you see him one to one. I made the mistake of only going at the end of semester and I wish I'd seen him sooner.
Personally one of my favourite professors here. He may seem very scary at first, but his fantastic and humorous personality makes the classes entertaining, and you should not be afraid to approach him. I highly recommend to come as early as possible and sit in the front row, right in the middle.
Attend class & dont buy the text (notes are perfect). T really couldnt make this class any easier - he keeps the same format as his practice quizzes for the actual quiz/mt. Do the practice questions/tests once he posts solutions and your golden. Assign. are completely manageable. If only he posted solutions for the practice Final :(
He is God in Math271, I would definitely take him again for future math classes.
My favorite prof so far. Simply amazing. May seem a bit intimidating at first, but he genuinely cares for his students, and explains everything so well. Extremely helpful when you ask him questions, especially in person. His sense of humor is awesome and his stories are super inspirational. Grading is strict but very fair. 10/10 would recommend!!!
Amazing lectures from a very knowledgable prof! Enjoyed a lot
Nice Prof and funny too !!
He's lectures are very interactive. Good class notes. Amazing professor. Basically, there are two types of students: those who like Dr. Dinh and those who don't know him!
Thi is a great professor. He is very knowledgeable and is obviously passionate about math. The course is tough but he tells you exactly what you need to know for each exam. He's also funny which is a bonus.
Honestly this guy is a MATH GOD. Its totally possible to do extremely well in the course IF you show up to his lectures (which are always hilarious and entertaining), take good notes, and keep up with the assignments. I never needed to use the textbook once the entire course. 10/10 recommend! The final is very difficult but he will help you do well
Thi managed to do what I thought was impossible, he made math interesting. The course material is the course material, but he did explain things in a slightly different way that really worked well for me. Plus he's hilarious. Most lectures saw us all laughing and he made you actually want to show up and learn. One of the best profs I've ever had.
Good prof - if you work hard, you'll be rewarded.
He is just great. Don't take 271 with anyone else! He is also very caring about his student when you go and visit him during office hours. Quality prof.
Phenomenal prof. Teaches math conceptually and makes sure you're good for more than plugging in numbers. Classes were interactive, and one of the few classes where I could sit down and genuinely enjoy learning the content and listening to the lecture.
Best Math prof at UofC
Really good prof. His lectures are engaging, his explanations are good, and the quizzes/assignments are fair. However, you have to come to class everyday as there are no notes posted online and the concepts can be confusing at first. Beware this is a difficult class and you have to work very hard to achieve a good grade. I highly recommend Thi.
Thi is a good prof that is well respected. He is really funny and has incredible life stories that he tells during class. 271 is a hard course though and you need to work pretty hard to get a good grade and understand what is going on.
T is funny and entertaining, but beyond that there is zero value added in taking his class over any other instructor. This course is purely based on your own math skills, BUT T is biased in marking exams, he even said so himself. If you want fun, entertainment, and gamble on grades, enroll. If you care for marking fairness and GPA, go elsewhere.
Amazing Prof, probably one of the best math profs in the department, took 271 and 311 with him and he was great there too. He presents course content in a very concise and engaging manner and goes over lots of helpful examples. Going to his office hours is mandatory if you want an A. Study hard for the final and you should do very well.
Hilarious as always. The course was fairly difficult, especially the assignments. Definitely recommend going to his office hours if you wish to do well. Go to his lectures and study very hard for the final. Wasnt my first time taking his classes so he remembered me from past classes. As a result he tended to pick on me in class for answers xD.
Hilarious guy who really knows math inside and out. He gives very short but clear notes and runs through examples in class. He is very lively so you will have no trouble staying focused. The assignments and quizzes are a bit tough but if you follow his posted homework schedule you will be fine. The time flies by in his lectures.
Love him he's very funny and teaches well
Thi is hilarious! He makes class fun to be in, but he can be condescending at times. He is clearly very smart thereby assuming we are as well. Definitely go to his lectures because he is good at explaining things. The tests are hard for this class, but if you do the practice tests you should be fine. TIP: Don't sit in the front he will pick on you!
Thi is a fantastic teacher, so long as you have a bit of hide. He expects you to learn, not be taught. He doesn't give a sht about speaking in a professional tone or with respect, but that is not to say he doesn't care for his students. He is a tough love teacher and as long as you aren't stupid you'll have a blast in his class. Thi is my favorite
Great teacher, funny lectures, always look forward to coming to class. Trust the reviews and take him. He doesn't waste your time, and he makes every minute count.
Thi is the best professor I've ever had through 2 undergrad degrees. His lectures are so engaging. You can tell he's honed his teaching skill for a long time because his explanations of complex concepts are so simple and easy to understand. I considered switching majors in both courses I've had with him because he makes math seem so beautiful.
Professor Thi may be a funny and charismatic guy, but when it comes to actual coursework, he gets quite confusing. His lectures are a bit of a mess, never really has much of a plan. He often speeds through questions, and sometimes would not even show us how to do the work all the way through.
Thi's enthusiasm and his direct and accessible teaching style made me actually like doing discrete mathematics. Beware that this course is still highly theoretical and so you need to put in a lot of work on your part to learn the material. Thi is very knowledgeable and kind outside of class, alongside providing useful resources for the course.
Thi is hilarious and makes the lectures alot more lively
Thi is an amazing professor. He has a unique sense of humor which some students don't appreciate, but he teaches the material thoroughly and makes sure you understand the concept. He does not post his lecture notes so make sure you attend lectures, he covers all the material there. He's very easy to talk to outside of lectures and is very helpful.
Definitely one of the best profs in the uni. Course material wasn't my strong suit so I needed a friend to help me out here and there, but Thi did an excellent job of making the topic material interesting and engaging as well as easy to digest. Compared to some of the other profs I've had at UofC, Thi is definitely in the top 10.
Absolutely fantastic professor. He's funny, energetic and engaging. His lectures are gold and the notes he writes on the board are a condensed version of everything you need to know. Going to class is huge as he'll do examples that are parallel to what you'll see on tests. He's a little rough on the edges when calling on students but he means well.
Dr. Thi's lectures are inspiring. Discrete mathematics is a course that has to make fundamental sense and he has found many techniques to keep the material interesting and have it make fundamental sense.
He is willing to change his teaching methods to suit your needs. Gives excellent feedback and is there to help you succeed. Great man and hilarious lectures. He calls on people occasionally, but its more conversational. He will listen to you. He is the best prof I have ever had.
Favorite prof ever. He actually cares about his students and wants you to do well. You never have to worry about surprises on his quizzes as they will be just like old ones he has posted on d2l. Go to his office hours and he will sit with you until you get it. He does ask for class participation which really helps you get the concepts.
He skips through a lot of the material in lecture because he assumes you should know it. He is a very though marker especially on the final exam. He assumes we are all on the same level of intelligence as him so he doesn't go through expectations and details of lecture materials. Attend class since he doesn't post notes online, and work hard in271
He's a great prof who tries to help as many people as he can but usually goes with the majority of the class. That is, if you don't ask questions, he won't know you're struggling and he will move on to the next topic. His lectures are easy to understand and very engaging, especially if you sit at the front! Be careful of getting called on however.
He is hilarious and always has really good lectures. Notes are not posted online so you'll have to come to class but the learning he promotes is also quite independent, so a lot of the learning in this class will be done on your own with practice.
Thi is one of the best professors I have had at UofC. His lectures are hilarious and he provides amazing examples. Course is just hard, but he does an excellent job at teaching the tough material. I would 110% recommend him as a professor.
An absolute legend. Excellent presentation of material, gets you involved in lectures, hilarious, encourages you to think, and isn't afraid to call out the dumb questions. Every professor should take inspiration from Thi. Would take any class he teaches just for the joy of sitting in his lectures. Math273 is honors/pure math version of 271.
Amazing instructor. The course is difficult, but he would often go very slow to make sure you understand all concepts thoroughly. Since he doesn't post lecture note, make sure not to miss any classes. Also, do A LOT of practice in the textbook (its free). Go to his office hours, its really helpful (sometimes he even extend the hours for students).
Thi is a great prof! His lectures were entertaining and hilarious. The quizzes were reasonable, the assignments were challenging so you might have to use more resources than just the textbook. The midterm and final were fair, previous years practice was really helpful but focus on what you learn in your semester. Notes aren't posted so attend class
Amazing prof. One of the best profs I've ever had. Take his class
Math 271 is more performance art than university course. Dr. Dinh is probably the best Math prof in the Math dept at the U of C. Memorize "the bible" and you'll do well in this class.
IMPORTANT NOTES: (1) Review materials after each class and clear anything you don't understand right away. (2) Definition is the key for the final. (3) You might want to read Textbook for the Graph chapter. (4) Some questions might seem scary but it just looks in that way so don't panic.
amazing amazing prof with great lectures. writes on black board with nothing online so attendance is mandatory. very funny and respected
What an absolute legend. He understands what it's like to be a student on a deep level and has a genuine love for teaching. He's brilliant, take classes with him if you get the chance.
He's unclear about his expectations for his students. He fails to provide complete examples for the proofs he "does" in class. His teaching practices are old and outdated. Ultimately sets his students up for failure.
Super cool and funny prof
This professor was amazing. Honestly the best I've ever had. His lectures were fantastic and made everything extremely clear. His method of teaching is kinda old-school, as he writes on a blackboard, but honestly, this isn't a bad thing at all. He's also a super funny guy. Don't sit in the front rows unless you wanna get picked on.
Lectures are a joy to attend. Thi is a great prof, all you need to do is pay attention to pass. The man is very funny and will call out dumb questions. Know the content if you sit in the first 5 rows because you will be picked on, but forced to pay attention and be engaged. Take every chance you get to have a class with him.
Thi Dinh is an absolute legend. He explains everything so well, and he is extraordinarily hilarious. One of the few classes I really enjoyed attending. If you are going to study MATH211 and have the option to choose your prof, 100%, without a doubt, choose Dinh.
This lectures are always thought provoking and engaging. What makes him stand out is that, unlike other professors, he doesnt use presentation slides but uses regular chalk and blackboard which makes following along much easier and you dont get lost as much.
Great and caring professor!!! Recommend him any day!!
He is quite old school and marks extremely tough on exams. Having completed a Mathematics degree at another Uni, his class was the only one I failed. Retook the course and got A+, with someone else, that should sum up just how tough he marks
Thi is funny and people respect him but he made me feel scared to ask questions out of fear of being ridiculed and laughed at. This class is hard as it is and for someone with an anxiety disorder his classroom is kind of hell. He will tell the class that the answer is obvious and will say that your question or answer is dumb if he thinks it is.
Solid prof, he is very kind and allows time for lots of questions, however is slightly unclear in the ways he teaches, as lectures are typically unstructured or not planned in advance
I loved Thi, honestly made lectures fun. He involves students which I think is important in learning. His notes were all handwritten on the chalk board, which I prefer. Definitely my favorite prof first year.
thi is just an amazing proffessor, he goes the extra mile for those willing to learn.
You have to write down your answer aCCORDING to his method. You got the right answer and working? That's great! Your answer is similar to your peers? Great job you should do well! Oh but you didn't follow his method? That's a 0 for you. Tries to be considerate, but gets pissed if you don't get it. The way you worded out your answer MATTERS.
best prof
Once I went to him for help and I said I would have loved to get a degree in mathematics and he rolled his eyes. I guess he didn't think I was smart enough. But I got a degree in Computer Science, so not that dumb.
this guy makes fun of anybody who tries to ask a question, one guy asked for to go back on his notes for a sec & he refused, saying "boys like me and u, we cannot do two things at the same time" bro what does that mean? he embarrassed the poor fella in front of the whole class, did the same thing again to sm other ppl, called them by out their name
The dude is amazing. Constantly flaming engineers for not muting their mics and an all-around good person. Adds humor and funny ways to remember math concepts and truly cares about making sure his students get the whole picture. If you correct him make sure you know what you're doing or you're going to get clapped.
Although he's made me laugh a few times during lectures, overall he is not organized and doesn't efficiently teach the material. He expects you to understand the material right away, and if you don't then he'll roast you. Also, he doesn't respond to emails! He is not accessible AT ALL outside of class.
Do you remember in high school your favorite teachers. Did they let you screw around and waste time? If not then you'll enjoy this class, because he won't let you. He knows the material and can explain it, but if you ask something he answered not 5 minutes ago, he'll tell you not to waste his and your classmates time. Pay attention and you'll be ok
Dinh is definitely the type of prof that it takes getting used to. I started off in his class extremely scared because he made it seems as if asking questions was a bad thing, but he is genuinely willing to help (if you go to his office hours!). Make sure you read the textbook before lectures tho!
While he does not cover the conceptual portion of 211 as much as needed, he perfectly explains the methods required to solve any question on the exam or Lyryx assignments. I would still recommend skimming through the textbook before his lectures just to cover the concepts. Just try to think about your question before you ask it, he has no chill.
He's an absolute legend. He might be a bit of an acquired taste, because he WILL roast you if you ask silly questions, but he's also an incredibly knowledgeable prof and genuinely very nice if you put in the time. The course was organized well, but the midterms are worth 75% of your mark so make sure you practice LOTS on Lyryx or use Prep101.
Thi Dinh is one of those profs that will explain exactly what you need to know, and exactly how to solve problems, without spending too much time on extra unnecessary information that wont be tested. He is old school, but will teach you everything you need to know. Make sure you think before asking a question, he does not like stupid questions.
Dr. Dinh is a great math teacher. He explains every concept very clearly and detailed. I didn't even need to read the textbook once. He will teach you everything you need. He likes to make you think. If you ask him dumb questions he will get mad and make fun of you. Also he loves to make jokes during his lectures.
Maybe I'm just too timid, but there is no way I'd ever be brave enough to ask him a question without fear of ridicule. He certainly is extremely funny, but not particularly caring. I know he's trying to come off playful and relatable but as a frightened first-year student, I honestly could have used a bit more patience and empathy.
Do the practice question on D2L and you would get easy A on this course. Thi is one of the best prof. I can feel that I learned a lot on his lectures.
He makes all of his lectures really fun and explains every concept well. Make use of his office hours to understand topics incase you were too busy having fun during class :)
Absolute legend. If you asked a stupid question he would let you know. The course was set up very nicely consisting of 3 non cumulative exams and assignments with unlimited attempts. What you saw on assignment problems was exactly what we saw on the exams. Overall, hes a great and funny prof that knows his stuff.
The man. The myth. The Legend. The Dinh. Has a lot of fun in his class and it really shows. I enjoyed his teaching style and I felt he did a very good job. Lyryx is a lifesaver too, best way to give assignments and test. Just make sure you don't forget your negatives in a test on lyryx!
For those that need more hands on help or generally have trouble with math this is not the prof for you. Often he would belittle students for asking questions. He expects you to remember everything learned from high school and is not all that helpful. However, for those good at math he would be a great prof!
Awesome guy, really wants the students to succeed. The assignments are super hard to make you think hard, but that prepares you for the midterm and the final really well. I would be pretty lost when starting an assignment, but by the time I was finishing the assignment I would know the material well. Such a nice and humorous guy as well, love!
The best Math prof I ever had he is super caring and funny in lectures assignments were super tough in the course but during office hours please do attend them he gives so many tips and tricks for the questions. The midterm and final were fair and I can say it makes up for the tough assignments. He is just the legend, attend all of his lectures.
Dr. Dinh has a very nice teaching style which I loved, he writes his own notes whiteboard/blackboard style. His lectures are VERY relevant to the exams and assignments, which makes the overall course (211 for me) very smooth. Take Dr. Dinh if you get the option, you will have a great time.
He was pretty good at explaining concepts and lyryx was a lifesaver in terms of studying. Complete lyryx with 100% and you will do well in the course.
Thi may be funny but as a prof, his notes were messy and confusing. If ur not clear of his concepts, he will roast u. He gets irritated if ur still confused, marks very harshly, hardly ever responds to emails and doesnt even answer some questions. Since the shutdown for covid, I had access to Jerrod Smith's notes which were much better.
Dr. Dinh's lectures are amazing and hilarious and the examples he covers in class are relevant to the exams. Do the Lyryx homework until you have 100% and use the questions to study for the exams and you'll be golden. Make sure you pay attention in class and if you have questions ask! He truly cares about his students and will take time to explain.
Funny man that does math good.
Dr. Thi has made my first year awesome. I always go to his lectures to relieve stress. Linear Algebra is very fun with him if you are able to put work into it and actually study. The course is overall great and I would love to take his class again in the future.
Had him for the fall semester and he was an amazing prof. He would callout people for asking dumb questions during the live lectures. One time he even made a $20 bet with a student on a question. The student got the question wrong though. Super funny guy and teaches well even though it is a pretty difficult course. Would love to have him again.
He is one of the best prof. I had. He tries to explain everything so well and he cue people when they don't answer. have got some rules and everyone must follow. He doesn't like to have unnecessary chat. He is rarely accessible outside the class. He may seem bad but still he is the best and knows his content nicely. Try taking him in future.
How "amazing" can a prof be when the class average for assignments is 58%? It seems to me people are more so amused by the fact that he speaks curtly and uses vulgarities every so often, he goes over only the simplest examples in class and then gets very creative for the assignments/quizzes/midterms. Got another prof's notes, feel less dejected.
I'd like to preface this by saying I am terrible at proofs, I found this class very humbling. However Thi is a very basic prof in terms of the effort he puts into teaching, a lot of these reviews are cringe overly impressed first years. He is Associate Head and teaches only a few classes, clearly his priorities are consulting/research.
Goddamn good. Real nice, explains well and interacts with class a lot even though it was online. I just had a friend who was allowed to take the online final when he'd just missed it.
He's a good prof overall, very engaging and knowledgable. The class was online so i liked how everything was very flexible. Definitly have to put in the work to fully understand the material.
Dinh was great, but the course? Not so much. If you were in an in-person block, there were not specific lectures for you, and you often had to rely on Lyryx. He recorded his lectures and they are really good! Goes over tough homework questions as well.
Legend.
He is a very funny and nice professor for the most part but is sometimes harsh towards some students in lecture. I would recommend.
Dinh is absolutely amazing. Especially after we moved back in-person, I can learn a lot from him. The course is tough, for sure, but he can make everything seemed to be easy.
You will need some time to get used to Thi and his teaching style, but when you do you will be very grateful you stayed. Quiz questions are taken from homework and previous quizzes he posts. Assignments are challenging but you can get a lot of help in office hours with Thi or the TA's. Struggled at first but it quickly became my favorite class.
Dr. Thi has easily been my favourite Math professor so far. He is an amazing lecturer, and he's one of the funniest people I have ever met. This is one of the hardest junior level courses in the whole University, but he did a great job mitigating that and making it possible to succeed. Great prof, I'd highly recommend.
champion of the people
Lectures were super long and always did really easy examples compared to the hw. Nice and funny guy but lectures are not good. All in all, mid.
Thi engages the class in his lectures, you wont be sitting quietly taking notes. He has open availability to go over any problems. He gives lots of practice work, old quizzes, and old midterms with solutions. If you are failing this course, or unhappy, you are definitely not doing your part in studying, practicing and going to his office hours.
He teaches for understanding compared to just teaching formula and then expecting people to then be able to use them. Always sit in the front 3 rows so you can engage more in class.
Universal GOAT
With how MATH 211 was run this year, Thi Dinh was the only thing making this course tolerable. Not only are his lectures and notes amazing, but he's also one of the most hilarious people I've ever come across. Furthermore, he's extremely friendly and patient during his office hours. Thank you DINH for making Math 211 an enjoyable course!
Legend. Perfect prof for first year students as it's a class you can look forward to going to. Don't ask foolish questions and you won't get roasted. If you get roasted, keep your head up.
Math 271 with Thi was my favorite class this semester by far. I could understand the other reviews about him though. Don't take with him if you get anxious being singled out. However, his teaching style will help you write proofs beautifully and accurately. Really nails it on the head. His teaching style prepared me for future proof-heavy courses.
Thi is a fantastic professor. Unfortunately, the use of the Lyryx platform for this course's online version is less than ideal. The platform itself does not account for multiple correct answers in some cases, which limits the potential for part marks on exams. None of that is Thi's fault though, and I found myself laughing in class at his jokes!
Thi is a good teacher who'll explain most of what's being tested. Use your lyryx study guide, homework questions and the mobile app in addition and you'll do well :)
Teaching style is very direct and straightforward. But even though he claims most concepts are just "common sense" he will do his best to explain things that are not understood. He uses lots of examples to explain concepts. He has great control of his classroom and interacts with students personally, this makes for a very engaging class.
Even though I was not in this section he carried the entire class though this course. Phenomenal lectures and very funny.
Amazing prof makes so many good jokes and silence is needed in his class if you speak he gets pissed a top G prof he is too awesome.
GOAT math professor. His jokes in his lectures are funny and he makes fun of students' mistakes. All part of his way of teaching.
Thi is a fun prof. He makes lectures easy to understand by visualizing it. His lectures are well organized and he likes to interact with his students. And yes, he does scare off people sometimes by criticizing them, but he also takes criticism quite well and admit his mistakes. It might be intimidating sometimes but don't be ashamed/afraid to ask.
Thi does not post notes for his in person classes, so it is important to attend lectures. He makes it so much easier compared to reading a textbook. Thi is straightforward and he says whatever is on his mind. You may take it as rude, but that is really his personality. Once you get to know Thi, you'll find him very easy to get along with.
This man delivers the most riveting lectures I've had the pleasure of attending. I found the quizes and midterms to be fair, and the assignments were fun and interesting. As it the case with many courses, to succeed in 271 doing the practice problems, reading the textbook sections, and attending the lectures are key.
The best Math prof at U of C. Lectures are amazing and entertaining. Only sit in the front if your okay with getting called on and picked on. It will help you learn in the course but you need thick skin.
mark assignments and tests by whatever his mood is, tough professor always call people stupid and claim that is a joke. A joke is both people think which is funny, not being tough on someone and pretend just joking. Really traditional Asian style math professor, be ready to go to classes everyday to take notes. Will not take classes with him anymore
Extremely harsh marker, class averages for assignments and probably tests too very low, does not post anything on D2L so good luck if you're sick for a class or two. The prof is stern and rigid and made a mocked a student. As a computer science major, I found him tough for intro math courses. He'd be more suitable for grad school.
I never enjoyed math or class in general as much as when I took this class. He will make sure you understand whether you want to or not. Thi Dinh is respected among students for a reason. If you're in this course I recommend doing the worksheets and going to office hours. After taking this course I like proving things when before it was scary.
Dinh is extremely knowledgeable in the content he teaches. His lectures were entertaining and he would always explain the reasonings behind solutions when asked. MATH271 is a very different course from other mathematics-based courses in university. Requires a lot of time and practice to get the hang of it.
My favorite prof. I have such a hard time staying engaged in lectures, but it was never an issue with him. I was never lost in this class, he explained things so well. I am taking 311 next sem just to take a class with the same prof. Amazing prof
I dont learn math easily in university lectures, but Thi really made things easy! It was such a big change to be able to "see the math" and leave the lectures feeling like I learned something. Super great guy!
I heard that he was a good prof but I never actually expected him to be that good. He is hilarious, gives amazing lectures and all tests/assignments are always fair. Plus, he knows how to break every concept down to a methodology that you can always rely on even outside his class. He doesn't post any notes for the class but does provide old exams.
Dinh Was an excellent professor! His lectures are well thought out and explained and He is very funny. However, he doesn't post notes so Attendance is very important for his classes. But if you show up to class and do the practice his class will be quite reasonable.
He's not great at teaching. The lectures have no structure, and most of the time he won't fully work through examples. A lot of extra reading is required to learn anything....which defeats the purpose of having a teacher. The standards are very high for his grading, which sucks since he doesn't even show that level of standard when teaching.
Thi is a funny guy. This is my 3rd course with him but we are only about a month in and I don't know what I should and should not know. Rarely explains concepts fully without an "easy' or "obvious" response to questions. Seems like he doesn't expect much but grading is always so harsh...probably TAs tho. Overall course just not structured well imo.
Expects the most, teaches the least. Proofs are either briefly expanded on or answered with a single word assuming we know what to do. Ask for an explanation, and get clowned. I copied exactly how he would do a proof in class but got 1/6 marks because it "didn't follow a format and showed little to no effort"...says a lot about Dinhs teaching style
Recent reviews r, imo, wrong. Thi's great at explaining what the proofs r trying to show & his lectures r engaging. This course combines proof-writing & calculation, which might be where ppl r finding the gap: coming from someone who did not do so hot on the 1st quiz but brought it back for the 2nd after taking Thi's criticism. Great prof :)
My favorite prof ever. Every time I need to use anything related to his class, I know it right away. He taught so well that I remember everything. He is funny, the most engaging prof ive ever had, and teaches extremely well. Tests and assignments are completely fair. Have never felt so inspired as when I took a class with thi :)
I have 3.7GPA and got screwed by this class. I can't tell you how much work, stress, frustration this prof/class put me through. Truly, I don't get how there's good reviews. If you need to take this class, good luck(I'd enroll in the next session).Tip: avoid class, learn from home (did that too late) and pay for extra classes. Sadly, he can't teach
Thi had not taught this class for a very long time and it showed at first, but he kept asking for ways to improve and worked to find a way to deliver the materiel that really worked. He kidna scared me tbh but I went to office hours and he was so kind and helped me understand some of the concepts I wasn't understanding. Brutal TA grading tho oml
lots of class interaction. if you have a question, he'll answer it properly. he writes on the chalkboard but doesnt publish notes so its tough if you miss classes. my favourite professor so far. he'll playfully tease students which made content memorable.
Thi was an okay professor from my experience compared to others, but that's probably because he said that he hasn't taught this class in a long time. At the start and near the end he was pretty good, but midway he wasn't really clear on what we should or should not know for the tests. TA's are really harsh in marking the quizzes.
Overall an ok prof when it comes to 211. He only uses the blackboard which is a pain so sitting closer to the front is best, and no lecture notes are posted after class. The homework is not too bad although some questions can take longer. Ask "smart" questions as he will make fun of you but in most cases will still answer your question.
This course with Thi was definitely the most entertaining class I've had so far, he really is a funny guy. Attendance is definitely mandatory as lecture notes aren't posted. Don't sit in the front if you don't want to get picked on, as that's kinda his whole thing. It does make you remember the material well though. Very helpful outside of class.
Loves his job, enthusiastic, teases his students to participate. If you miss class, do not fret, his notes are more supplementary than a requirement, just do the lyryx engage. The lyryx assignments are easy but might be tedious at times. the exams are almost the same as the sample ones he provides, they follow a formula, follow it and you'll pass.
He is great at what he does, but only if you attend the classes because he doesn't put up notes on D2L. As long as you attend classes and do your homework to ensure you understand what is being taught, you will do fine in his classes even if you've heard that they are difficult.
He teaches concepts well and passionately. I didn't really study much, but I found the tests easy enough to pass so I could get this course over with.
The professor brings a lot of enthusiasm to the lectures, making the course enjoyable. While attendance is mandatory, the content is well-explained, and using resources like unstuckstudy AI alongside the textbook can help compensate for missed classes. Overall, a solid option for the MATH211 requirement.
Thi is a VERY entertaining lecturer, but I find what's on the quizzes doesn't match what's on the assignments which also don't match the lectures. You end up doing so much extra work self teaching yourself things he doesn't cover in Lec. He also doesn't explain a lot of stuff because it's “obvious” which isn't good for a new learner.
Amazing teacher, tough classes but he makes the classes both fun and actually helps you understand difficult topics super well.
extremely old school, writes on the chalk board and has next to nothing on d2l, if you miss 1 class you'll miss a lot of material. hates it when you talk in class. entertaining and funny, he makes unhinged jokes. His explanations are good, its relatively easy to understand what he's teaching, he goes over examples but goes very fast.
Although lectures are entertaining the examples we cover in class are often very basic when compared to the ones on assessments. He moves at a high pace during class and though he does encourage questions, he will often belittle those who do ask. Also he will often not cover easy topics b/c they are obvious, but may be difficult for new learners.
He da goat
He wasn't the worst, but definitely wasn't the best either. He never posted any of his lecture material online, and he ridiculed students for asking questions even though the class was difficult. He uses a blackboard and had tiny writing, so I had to come quite early to get in a line-up in order to sit at the front. You really can't miss lectures.
These ratings are inflated. He was funny, but he didn't really explain things the best always because he expected you to know everything already. He only used a blackboard so you couldn't see unless you were sitting at the front, and he posted none of his lecture material online which sucks because 211 is difficult and requires a lot of review.
Exceptional professor. Could not forgive myself if I took this class without leaving a good word. He is an inspiration to the profession of teaching, and inspiring to me as a student. Its not common anymore to sit in a genuine lecture and be lectured to and taught, not just orated to off slide shows. Im grateful to have experienced his teaching
Great professor, good lecturer but could help from a lecture plan sometimes. All in all people say he's the only professor that can teach linear algebra and they're right, you for sure need a good mental picture of how these things work and he explains the geometry side of vectors really well
Amazing professor with a nomadic teaching style: Went into depth with difficult concepts to make them relatively easier to grasp, and cracked jokes that kept lectures engaging. Only downsides are that all lectures are in-person and some ideas would benefit from proofs so that they can be fundamentally understood.
Thi is funny regularly making jokes during his lectures, but his teaching is no laughing matter. He doesn't provide notes, making it hard to catch up if you miss a class. He relies solely on the blackboard, so you need to be 20 minutes early to see anything. Plus, he skips reviews before midterms and finals so you go in relying on your own studying
Professor Thi is hands down the best professor I've had. While he doesn't post his lectures, attending them is definitely worthwhile. He is an engaging and hilarious professor, and his lectures have the same energy, making them highly enjoyable and informative. He's great at teaching and explaining difficult concepts clearly.
He doesn't post any lecture notes so it's basically mandatory to attend his lectures. But I find he explains very well and will explain until you understand if you have any questions for him. He's a hilarious guy and the atmosphere in class was also great. Textbook can help but a bit of a tedious read.
He is way post his expiry date, irritable, his joy is to scream and belittle students. He knows nothing about this course, like to throw tantrums like a child if asked a question. Expect rage fits in the class, throwing chalks forcefully at the board. He get fixated on few female students, he might be very old but still lacks maturity. Very immature
He might be a good instructor for MATH271 but he is definitely not good for MATH311. He hasn't taught it in like 20 years, and he forgot everything and he needs to relearn it. He is inconsistent and very moody and belligerent especially if you make a mistake, as if he never did any mistakes in his life. He talks all the time about his intelligence.
His class were very fast paced at times, but he always said that he would slow down if people were to let him know. Nobody ever let him know during class though. His class was very entertaining. If you don't want to get roasted don't sit in the first 3 rows. Simple. He would always answer questions but not before roasting you.
Only reason people like him is because he jokes around a lot. Other than his jokes, he does not post his notes and expects you to catch up on the course on your own. Terrible overall and would never take another class with him again. Save yourself while you can
Easily the best math prof. He doesn't post any notes online so lectures are basically mandatory but his lectures are very very good. His tests are easy and always have questions straight from the lectures. He showed us the averages per test acoss the two sections and Thi's class was higher by 10-15 percent per test so you should go with him.
Though I preferred his teaching in this class to 211 it still wasn't great. His lectures are entertaining as he likes to joke but is rude when answering questions or when students make mistakes which make his lectures a lot less enjoyable. However he will still encourage you to ask questions as if it will be a positive experience
His lectures are fun and engaging, and he's one of the best math professors I've had. The only drawback is that he doesn't post notes, so you have to attend every class to stay on top of the material.
Great person but he is not a good prof at all. Be prepared to teach yourself the class because he doesn't post notes at all and he expects you to understand his bare bones lectures through his thick accent. Like I said though he's funny and a great person but not for me
I don't see the hype. Haha, he threatens you if you get the answer wrong, but other than that he's a pretty straightforward prof who doesn't go above and beyond. It's not like he gives you a lot of answers to tests in class, most of those are from the problem sheets that you do yourself. At least does the bare minimum unlike other profs.
He told us he understands why proof courses are difficult, and it's because they require common sense. Wow what a passive aggressive, condescending and derogatory way to talk to students. Basically he does a great job in making you feel that you're inferior, stupid and you will never understand anything.
Amazing prof, with unique study approach
I have now taken this professor for 211, 271, and 311, and he is incredible. Hilarious and engaging lectures, fair tests, and a manageable amount of work. The topics covered in these classes are difficult, but as long as you are willing to study the material on your own time, you will do fine. The only downside is that he does not post notes.
This guy is the LeBron James of the University of Calgary math department
I would definitely take Thi's class again. The environment is so fun!! He is always willing to spend time answering student's question after class. Taking class with him encourages me a lot. Regarding to MATH 271 itself, it's hard but if you spend time and have knowledge in math then you will be good. It requires different ways to solve problems.
Thi was fantastic as a math teacher and super engaging. It's one of the best classroom environments I've ever had for learning since he focused on intuitive understanding "seeing is believing" and made complex ideas like the intersection of 2 lines in n dimensional space seem totally intuitive, also he's hilarious. Take him if you get the chance!
It seems that the people who don't like this professor also don't like showing up to lectures, which I don't understand. If you're paying thousands of dollars for your education, then you should go to your classes! Don't waste the money. He tells you what content is going to be on the exam, which is SUPER helpful for studying. Overall awesome guy.
Ive had dinh for both 311 and 211 and having two dif attitudes going into these classes made it clear that your performance in his classes are entirely dependent on the effort you put into studying and paying attention. Overall great prof and makes difficult math easy to understand, you can get by doing the hw and taking notes in class.
