Design and Ceramics...excellent teacher, positive attitude, fun personality
Very Knowledgable about obscure subjects. Makes class interesting
Seriously, you don't need to teach the primary colors. This class was a total waste of my time.
I found this professor to be very knowledgeable, fun and very helpful. I learned a lot in this class. He made learning fun! This was a great class!
Easy, fun class. Thom is knowledgeable, funny and--I think--cute! One of my favorite teachers on campus.
Very funny teacher. Learned a lot from him and not only about ceramics. May have to take time outside class to finish projects and got to use cheat sheet for the final. I would recommend him.
Mr. Lee is an excellent teacher. He really cares about his students and applys the class material to the real world.

Ceramics w/ Thom is a fun class for everyone!
Very stern and can be hard on you, but he's also a fun guy.

He was so clear and easy to understand. Tom's really organized and as long as you can keep up with that, you'll do great! He's also really funny!
This is such a great class. There is a lot to know, but the teacher makes it very clear. He also shows how different subjects are related.
Great class... even if you aren't the best of artists you can still do great in his class. For us who do have some artisitc talent... it's a great way to understand the basis of graphics and logos, and being able to draw helps you impress him! :)
Thom is by far the best teacher at EvCC, as well as in my top 2 of best teachers I have ever had. He brings out the best in his students and really makes you THINK about everything. If you haven't taken a class from Thom, I highly recommend it!
EXCELLENT teacher...a year later I'm still referring back to notes from his class. Definitely the most memorable and interesting class I've ever taken.
he is reallly good teeacher
This class is way more involved than I thought it would be, but the teacher pulls everything together and makes it clear. He proves that EVERYTHING is connected (even math and art). He is also very accommodating to people with physical limitations. It really helped me a lot.
Thom is fantastic! I wish I could take his ceramics class. He's full of useful info, fun stories, and good laughs. All of his projects were great, especially the Stupid Cow!
Thom rocks! Very friendly, passionate, smart, funny, and intelligent. You will have fun with this class. You will acquire quite a bit of random and useful knowledge. He knows his stuff.
By far the best teacher at EvCC. Very intellectual, and great at what he does. Very helpful and funny too. He tries to have a more personal connection with all of his students. I guarantee you he will be more than a professor, he will end up being your friend too.
Thom is one of my favorite people. He is an excellent teacher and a fantastic human being. You will enjoy his class.
Thom is crude and annoying and talks for way too long. He's good with pottery and he knows what he's doing though. So if you wanna really learn about the subject, I recommend this class. Just be prepared to sit on your butt and listen in an over-airconditioned room for two hours, and THEN make things out of clay for a half hour or so.
Thom is hilarious and easygoing. He breaks things down in his lectures so everyone can understand, and he's always willing to answer questions. I recommend his class to anyone pursuing a degree in fine arts.
I loved this class, but it was not easy. Lots of information crammed into a summer class. But Thom's enthusiasm and sense of humor made it really fun. I keep going over my notes even though the class is over.
"Raise your right hand" Thom is an awesome teacher! He's engaging, funny, talented, helpful, and cares that you learn. This was one of the best classes I've taken yet at EvCC.
Great instructor - funny but sometimes corny too. Very clear and helpful.
I took this class two years ago and then went on to a 4-year. Everything I learned in ART 110 helped with all of my other classes. I didn't just learn about design. I learned how to connect information and see how it all fits together.
Good and well spirited teacher with lots of information. The class is by no means easy at all. It's challenging, so show up to class to really understand the concepts. Don't do the projects the night before because grading isn't sympathetic and you'll get the grade you deserve if it looks a hot mess. But I will use everything I learned in real life
Thom is an energetic teacher who loves teaching this subject. He uses many types of media to explain his points, which helps students of all learning types to understand him. Projects are fun, but take time. This class helps in all types of art, and applies in life. Thoroughly enjoyed the class.
Great guy and friend. Taught me a lot and I will always remember the things I learned in his class. I want to take his ceramics class now.
Awesome teacher!
I'm tking this class right now. It's full of information and I felt really behind when I missed a couple of classes. He is very helpful and funny. I think I finally understand COLOR!
Class has been done for a coupla weeks but I still wake up thinking of it and wanting to go. I can't get dressed, eat, listen to music, or do my other art work without thinking about this class!
Possibly one of my favorite teachers ever!! Very interesting and smart-- I was never bored in this class. The projects take some time and effort, but they're fun and worthwhile. Again, Thom is fantastic. :)
I really enjoyed his lectures - always fun, interesting, and engaging. Thom is intelligent and witty, but not a very hands-on teacher - I would have liked more feedback while working on projects. I often felt his grading was tough and too subjective; his expectations weren't always 100% clear. Example: I spent >10 hours on one project and got a B.
I took this class last quarter and couldn't go on to the next level. Now I really miss it. I told him that the final was tough, and he asked if any of the questions were unreasonable, and I said no because everything was fair. I questioned the grade on one of my projects, and he explained why I got the score, and I ended up agreeing with him.
This class was great. I never thought I could draw but the teacher made me feel confident. When he put up our first drawings next to our last ones I was amazed at how much everyone improved. You really need to come to class. I missed a few and it lowered my grade.
Had Thom for drawing and learned so much! He is so knowledgeable and explains things well. I really enjoyed his class!
I'm loving this class. He is really clear and gives a lot of great examples. I also really like the way he gestures to make his points. He slinks around like a pudgy little ninja.
Thom is an awesome professor. If I recommend anyone it would be him! Put forth good effort and show an appreciation for the subject and you'll do well. Also, if you want to get on his good side, leave paper towels around your work area and he will tell great stories of past students. Just make sure to pick them up at the end of the class.
Thom is great. I took ART 110 with him and loved it. His grading was a little strict but he just wants you to try your hardest. Overall the class was pretty easy but I did learn a lot. Don't miss class because you go over a lot of info. But overall Thom is awesome and you should take any class you can with him.
A very quirky energetic asian man and that's a good thing! He keeps you interested and is very funny during class. He loves wearing the color blue and I don't know why. Overall he is a great teacher and super fun so consider taking his class! Also, the class is much more fun when you interact with him back. BAM!
Thom is a very good speaker and is fun to listen to. He can be a bit of a tough grader, but is always fair. I just wish he wasn't so patient with rude and disruptive students who are out to ruin the class for others.
A very engaging and energetic teacher. His interpretation of the material was very helpful. Overall one of my favorite classes.
Know your concepts and you should be fine (neatness and creativity are also key). After enduring this course you might be so sick of raising your right hand and repeating after Thom that you feel the urge to run away and never come back; that's normal. But overall, Thom (as he prefers to be called) is an enthusiastic and knowledgable instructor.
He's a really interesting instructor and will take the time to get to know each student over the course of the class. Has a lot of random facts up his sleeve but really knows his stuff on ceramics. The class itself is not easy. Requires creativity and extra time. EVERYONE will know if you BS your project. So don't even try.
This class wasn't the easy art class I expected but it was so fun! At first I didn't know where it was going, but when he put the info in categories it was clear. I didnt know about blooms taxonimy before but it helped me with my other classes too.
The teacher is such a nice guy that I really wanted to do good in class. He's really funny too and nice about grades. I don't know if I think he's hot but definitely cute.
Having taken 18 different classes at EvCC, Thom is easily the best professor there. He's very passionate about what he teaches. He employs comedy and interesting facts to make learning and remembering easy. He's not an easy grader, but his classes are so much fun, and if you pay attention, you'll do great.
Hee's a great teacher and I luv the way he smells.
Today's class was something special. He showed us design in poems and music. Ask him to tell you a poem. When he sang to us I felt like I was looking into his soul. I can't wait to see what comes next.
Its really weird how its like he can fix a drawing just by waving his hands over it. I feel like I can really draw better. Never miss class. your grade will go down
Thom was very approachable and knowledgeable, about many things not only ceramics. He gave great feedback and if you needed any help he was there to answer your questions. This class was great as an elective especially with Thom, I felt that he really wanted all of the student in the class to succeed.
Thom has been by far my favorite teacher at EvCC. I'd recommend his classes to anyone. He makes class so much fun and he is a fountain of fun facts. Not to mention he is an incredible artist. He can be a tough grader, but he wants to see everyone succeed. Don't miss class or your grade will go down! And take his ART 110 class first!
Thom is your average art teacher, nice but little quirky. In this class, there's few projects but they are difficult. Expect to put time in outside of class in the studio. Stick to the criteria but be creative and you'll pass. Final exam was decently easy, just make sure you study and pay attention in discussions.
I'm a science major and took this class as a requirement, and was surprised at how clear objective it was. His lectures were always interesting and funny. I really miss it. The final was kind of long, but all of the questions were fair.
He is over excited about design and he knows so much. At first I thought he was insane but now t can't think of him being any other way. I wish I could take another class with him.
This guy is hilarious. He makes coming to class so fun. If you just come to class and do the drawings you get most of the points. My drawings got so much better.
Tough grader. This class takes a lot of planning before you even touch clay. Lots of memorization for the final. He is willing to help with your work if you ask. Lots of outside time required for this class (16+ hours a week of studio time per project).
Excellent teacher with a good sense of humor and incredibly engaging teaching style.
I finished the final early and didn't want to leave. Every minute of this class was great.
I never knew there was so much to know about pottery. I wish he was my chemistry teacher. I learned more about it in this clas than my chem class
I've taken classes at least a dozen instructors at EvCC and Thom is by far my favorite! Thom is so intelligent about so many things that it's almost intimidating, that being said, his sense of humor could take down a mammoth! He is such a character! I love Thom Lee! I would gladly allow him to glaze my vessel, if you know what I mean.
I took Ceramics 1 and 2. He is funny and knows so much. Sometimes says inappropriate jokes, but overall pretty PG. He is very clear and wants us to understand the beauty in the art of ceramics. If you want to get a good grade, be willing to come to the studio on extra days for practice :) Very enjoyable, but it does require creativity and devotion.
Im in this class now. We just finished studying color. I never knew there was so much technical information. It all makes sense the wy he takes it a part. He's really funny too. Im glad this is anonymous because I hit hot and I never thought that about another guy. I think Im getting a crush on my teacher.
he is cool guys. Very talkative, a lot of information. fun class. but he is also a tough grader.
tough grader
Greatest class ever! I learned so much and wish it i could take another class. Hes a tough grader but fair. Now I look at pottery wherever I go.
I thought a drawing class would be an easy A, but found out it was a lot of work. The teacher was great. He was so hilarious, but serious about teaching. I dont know how he was always so friendly and energetic. Never skip class because you miss a lot and he's serious about that.
He gives good lectures and a tough grader but if you need your GPA high for some reasons, I would not recommend. You will learn a lot, but his instructions are not always clear so if you miss a class or two, you will probably end up screwing things. He's very knowledgeable, you'll likely be inspired in his class.
Repetition repetition repetition. Thom likes to say this but in no way is his class repetitive. Thom is an extremely intelligent human and seems to have a fair and well balanced perspective on life. Very honest, real, and Inspiring. Im most certain thom could be doing a different job and make far more money with his skill but seems to love teaching very much so. He is very interactive with the class and keeps you awake through the long lectures he sometimes has. If I had to picture a asian spider Monkey with adhd, a high iq , and a passion for scaring sleepy students thom would be it. Put in the time and effort on projects and he will see it and appreciate it. Thank you for sharing your wisdom thom.
I finished the class yesterday and already miss it. It was fun every day. I didn't even use my late assignment pass from the syllabus.
I want him to teach all of my classes. Tough but fair.
Thom is so passionate about educating his students, I learned so much in this class! He doesn't just lecture to you- he makes sure that you understand with fabulous examples from many different sources. Amazing class with fun projects you can be proud of. As an education major, Thom is a true inspiration and will stay in my heart forever.
Thom is a very interesting human and a wonderful professor. He does more than teach you how to shape clay. He teaches his students lessons that will makes them see the world a little differently than they did before taking his class. He digs deep. He is a hard grader but most will do fine if they put effort and deep thought into their projects.
It was like going to a magic show every day!
He is such a good teacher. I hope that he will eventually devote his talents in service of the Lord. I pray for him every day.
He's a really funny teacher but i don't think its fair that you have to go to class every time to get a good grade
Great class.
Tom is a great teacher. Everyone improved lots. But I still don't know what sports ball is.
Thom is great! First I felt assignments seemed like riddles. READ CRITERIA: go beyond the basic examples. He likes to see that you put thought into your project and spent time crafting it well. Take notes on the handouts he gives for lectures and listen to his words, they reflect the written final. 1 late PROJECT pass, not for other assignments.
He knows more about my culture than me. He mentioned some storied that i had to ask my grandma about and she was happy to hear
Good guy. Anyone who as anything negative to say about Thom are stupid. Thom doesn't have a complete filter, so anyone who are babies, I mean sensitive, don't take his class.
Really funny but tough. Take this class if you want to have a great time but get a soso grade.
My best role model
He's so nice. He brought donuts to class when people had birthdays on project days. Lots of new vocab and a lot to lern
All Im saying is, think before you raise your right hand and repeat what hes saying because sometimes its a valid lesson, sometimes its a joke, and sometimes its definitely not something I want to repeat
Thom is truly one of the rare teachers who teach because they actually want their students to learn and succeed. He ties in so many different sources and influences in his lectures that you come out of the class knowing more than just got to mix colors or draw a line. He's definitely one of the greatest and most inspiring professors I've had.
I love it when someone says something random and the teacher gets confused and stares at them silently with his head tilted.
Took them last quarter. Very supportive. Understands trans students. Made me comfortable. Just pay attention and you will be fine.
One of the funniest teachers at EVCC. Super entertaining. Even if you arent majoring in art you can still learn a lot from this class. The quizzes were hard though.
Be careful what you wear. He's gonna use you as a class example. even if you wear boring outfits he finds a way to use them in a lesson. I loved the class, though.
Thom is a really potter. Things just seem to appear under his hands. He gives a lot of time to work independently, but is always helpful. Its a fun class. I don't know why some people skip so much.
Thom was a really engaging teacher with lots of valuable insights that gave the material meaning. He made it very clear why everything we learned was important in some way! His critiques were very solid and I think it definitely made me a better artist. He is also super approachable outside of class and will help you out 100% if you need it
You can tell he's been doing this for a long time because he really knows his stuff. He really engages with students and makes sure everyone is participating in class discussions. Don't take this class and expect it to be an easy art credit though. He's a tough grader. Just follow the rubric for projects and you'll be fine.
Lots of jokes and gives you good feedback on how to help your work, occasionally makes you feel defensive of your work. beware of the yelled words of emphasis, it will spook you and possibly make you draw the wrong line.
Thom is an amazing guy who cares for his students and wants them to work hard to succeed. Most of his lectures were engaging and fun to listen to. However, he is a tough grader, so you need to work hard to get an A while coming to class EVERY day; he makes that very clear. Great class if your major is related to arts, and for everyone.
Best teacher at EvCC. Hilarious guy and is incredibly knowledgeable. He grades hard on projects (esp. the stupid cow project), but if he sees that you really tried and thought about it, he wont be too nitpicky. I had a blast in his class and recommend anyone who needs an art credit to take him.
I took this class because I wanted to make dishes for my place but he made us do other projects. This class was way too hard. He should just help us make what we want. Art classes shouldnt have lectures or exams.
This guy is really interesting. Each class is full of surprises so dont miss. Nothing fazes him. I heard he did time for a while maybe thats why
This is probably one of the funniest people I've ever known to teach a class. He can sometimes assign a little much, however he's really not that harsh of a grader and, tends to see more of what you did good on in the feedback.
I took Thom Lees beginning ceramics course more than 20 years ago at The Ohio State University. Now the sole proprietor of my own architectural practice in the SF Bay Area, I recall that learned more about architecture from Thom than from just about every other class I took. A genuine soul and wonderful teacher.
Thom wasnt the regular prof but gave a talk on postmodernism. He was so smart and funny and made me understand. I wanted to sign up for his ceramics class but it was full.
I think hed be fun to party with. You never know what he will say, but its always rad!
He gangsta! So cooo!
Best teacher ever! I liked the way he ended every unit by putting it on the lists of DE and OP. It helped me to see how it all goes together. He hlped me learn to study for my other classes. Great at making me feel confident
Thom made the material really easy to remember. The final actually ended up being pretty easy (but PLEASE take notes!) The more time you spend on his projects, the better. I had an issue with the way he did art evaluation. You end up sitting through a whole class period doing the same thing over and over again. But other than that, it was great!
Honestly, Thom is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He genuinely cares about the people in his class and actually makes it enjoyable to be there. I get extremely drowsy in most lecture-based classes, but he makes the lectures interesting. He's extremely fair with grading and as long as you don't procrastinate with the projects you'll be fine.
Thank you Tom Lee for saving my life.
Super funny and engaging (lots to say bc I took his 8am class). However, DONT SKIP. He hands out a lot of 3-5 pt entrance tasks that you cant make up. Mostly it's okay, but if you miss more than a couple it can really hurt because you dont know when he'll give a quick graded task.
Thom is honestly one of the best professors at EVCC. While the projects were hard at points because of my lack of art skill, Thom was fair in grading. If it wasn't for his teacher evaluation extra credit I would have gotten a C but ended with a B. He made going to class at 8 AM a great experience.
The teacher had some sort of bad accident before class started and could barely walk. He was still really funny and gave great lectures. It was good to see him get better. He never missed a day. Inspiring. The videos we watched online were fun
Thom is my favorite art teacher! I have learned so much about art and other random yet interesting things in his class. He has a great personality and is really funny. His assignments can be challenging but he is a fair grader. If you try your best you will get a good grade in this class.
He's a fun teacher and you can tell he enjoys what he does. Definitely doesn't hand out As, but tells you why respectfully.
I don't think that he has ever taught an online class before and that shows. He often does not pot many assignments until the day they are due, giving us no notice whatsoever. He also does not give clear instructions, needing you to watch multiple videos and read multiple documents to get all the instructions. Why not just put it all in one place?
The class started but that quickly changed and it was stressful. The way Thom grades is super strict and can be discouraging considering this is supposed to be a Beginners class! The final was so terrible and way too hard for only an hour to take it. Hes a funny teacher. If you want to paint and draw like people and stuff, not the class for you!
The lecture videos were really fun, but he's a tough grader. He is easy to contact by email and answers quickly. I think he's a friendly teacher.
The teacher was very honest about being new at teaching online and had some problems with canvas. He still did a great job. I liked how he gave the assignments, let us think about and then gave a video to show more detail. the information is great, but he doesn't lead you by the hand. You have to think. Exam was mostly multiple choice. Easy.
He's a fine art teacher and knows his stuff, but his grading criteria is really subjective. He expects you to interpret things in the exact way he does, but doesn't give you any clues beforehand to set you on track to the "correct" answer. He also locks assignments the moment the deadline hits, and has a vague rubric. I didn't enjoy his class.
Thom is an amazing professor, he really knows his stuff, & he has a great sense of humor. There was a lot of lecture videos. You got to pay attention to these and take notes because it will all be on the final. The projects were fun & challenging at times, I'm not that great of an artist but I tried my best & did all the work and ended with a B.
Thom did an awesome job at being interactive with us students, he gave lots of very helpful lectures and videos, and whenever he graded something, he gave very helpful comments. The assignments were also really fun! The assignments weren't easy A's, but he's a fair grader and gave constructive feedback. I'd love to take another class with him!
Thom isn't the best art teacher by far. He's not bad, but his grading is SUPER subjective. He often expects students to know what he wants, and anything less than that he doesn't give full credit. Lecture videos are super long and tedious, and I suggest you put it on 2x speed if you take his class. Gives a reasonable amount of time to do the work.
I liked the projects but sometimes the grading was unreasonable. Ok class, it wasn't too bad.He had you make up definitions for words like "line" and then graded it really heavy, and that sucked. You have to pick up an Art kit at the college for like 50 dollars I think? Wasn't a big fan of the class FINAL.
I was really disappointed with this class. I like Thom a lot as a person, he's funny and I have a lot in common with him, but this class made me rethink my whole career path because I felt so discouraged by his nitpicking grading. He focused too heavily on vocabulary, often going on tangents about the origin of words rather than teaching about art.
Loved his teaching style, however there alot of online work as well
Thom Lee is a funny and good professor, but his grading is nitpicky. It is hard to know what he wants on his projects and prompt assignments. The final wasn't very "studiable" and took me by surprise since it was supposed to be on vocab. Some things he told us to study were not even in the final. Put lectures on 2x speed. Hilarious, but hard class.
One of my favorite teachers. The class definitely has a lot of lecture but he makes it very interesting. He tells a lot of personal stories that relate to the class, you might hear the same stories a few times. He is always available to ask questions and has timely responses. His instruction are very clear so if you follow them you will do well.
If you're looking for a fun class Art 270 is definitely it. Thom likes to make jokes and the overall structure is very upbeat. Grading can be a little bit cumbersome because it's an art class but eventually, you'll figure it out. The benefits heavily outweigh the negatives.
Thom is a great professor and makes lots of jokes all the time as well as telling lots of storys but they relate to the lectures. You do have to kind of let yourself go and not be so uptight with some of the projects but it all fun in the end.
Lectures were kind of long but fun enough for me with no interest in art to pay attention. He can get a little nit picky with your projects but he gives clear rubrics to follow, besides those he also assigns videos/prompts to respond to and entry tasks which were easy. The final was online and not too hard if you show up to class you'll pass it.
He always keeps lectures interesting through CONTRAST in how he speaks.
Fun class, great teacher. I would have put extra effort into thinking about the criteria. Funny af. Taking him agian in the fall! cant wait!
In his moist form, Thom can be described as perfectly wedged. However, when leather hard, you'll never know his next move. Overall, Thom exceeds expectations. If you want to just play with clay, and recieve an easy A, it may not be for you. Working on projects outside of normal class time is recommended (necessary if you want quality work).
ART110 visual foundations was probably my favorite class at EvCC. Thom is really talented at bringing humor into his lectures and it helped cement these lessons in my brain.
He gave his grading criteria for every assignment and gave good feedback. He made it easy to learn any vocabulary because he would go over it many times in class and was very clear with what we were supposed to take away. I would say even if you do not think you are a great artist you would still do well in this class.
Thom makes the lectures entertaining with lots of stories, but the grading can be nitpicky. Using resources like unstuck AI alongside the free textbook helps navigate the class. Attendance is mandatory, but worth it - just be prepared to put in the work.
He's a funny teacher but his grading was very tough and seemed unreasonable.
He rambles forever and he got really offended when I made a joke to the point he threatened my grade on a project. I was not given clear feedback and I was primarily graded on the ceramics I produced but was rarely told how to produce viable ceramics.
Strict Rubric. Tends to go off topic. His grading style is nitpicky.
Decent guy and gave good feedback. Assignments were fun but the lectures were boring at times. He does entry tasks at random to encourage attendance, otherwise it's ungraded. If the class as a whole isn't watching his lecture videos then he'll start doing pop quizzes. Grading is done on every assignment with a “class critique” structure.
He lectures a lot but goes off topic and I don't think I learned anything from them. His grading is tough and I feel that it can be unreasonable. Overall I would not recommend this class
Thom genuinely cares about his students, and there success! Community college was intimidating when I first started, however taking Thoms design/cermics classes showed me college teachers arent insanely evil. Can not recommend all his classes enough!! however be prepared, with any art class at evcc, regardless of teacher the corse load is heavy.
