He is condescending and unclear in his lesson plans. Don't take his class unless you are are Shakespeare!!! Even then, you may get a bad grade.
Akers is one of those teachers that has unclear lesson plans and expects you to know everything when you enter his class and he is unwilling to help a lot of the time. However, his lessons are easy if you can figure out what he wants.
Very picky, the class is managable if you can pull off all essays without grammar mistakes.

Avoid this man like the plague. The pace of his course was erratic at best, and you might as well just throw the syllabus out the window right after he hands it to you because it wont help you. Complete, condescending jerk off.

I thought he was a good teacher, although, often monotonous. had to write a lot in 100 but was a good way of overcoming essay writing. took him twice because i thought i learned a lot from him.

I had to drop this class because whenever I would ask him something, he would give some sarcastic comment on move on. Those that say that we are not smart enough to understand this man is just ignorant because I am a very smart person, and I nkow basic English writing, and he is an ass.

Thanks to the students who allowed me to drop this class guilt-free. Akers is very hard. A lot of homework, lots of essays, a research paper and he makes you keep a journal. THAT SUCKS!!! Do all this work and it only considers you a C grade. Write 6 more essays-you may get a B. Don't take his class.

Good luck on his exams... If you don't write what he wants to read, you're screwed. Extremely vague teacher- I'll admit, he has his moments of insight, but they don't make up for the air of superiority he has over his students. Don't take this class if you can help it.

He was a jerk about certain religions so I dropped him even though it was well after the "drop with a W" date....so I got an F in his class because he talked like a biggot.

Worst professor ever! Avoid this man at all cost.
I took his class in 1998. Started the semester with 38 people half way through we had 12 left. He is rude, condescending and will never gove you better than a D! I finished the class with a B, but only thrugh administrative review. He was such a prig that we took up a petition to remove him from our class or to have a new instructor. He was viscious, uncaring, deceptive, outright lying about students abilities, and liked to ridicule and embarass students in front of the class. Many left with Tears. Fire Him
This professor is pretty boring, overall he isn't very helpful or clear. The class itself is fairly easy, but I wish I had Hoffman. Take only if this is your last resort.

Probably one of the most condescending men I have ever met. Will shut you down for having a different opinion (even if you're stating a well regarded fact) and consistenly grades unfairly. I got an A and I still think he's horrible.
Not very clear as to what he wants in the essays. He contradicts himself all the time. He does not grade fairly. Does not tell you when things are due. no tests. Just in class essays.

Honestly, he is by far the worst teacher EVER... not will he annoy you with his stupid jokes but he is unfair and doesn't help out students one bit. If you take this class all I can say is good luck. I have never hated a teacher as much as I hate him. He disgusts me.

A little difficult but i got an A. just do the work, and think for yourself. He is not gonna give you the answers, so don't expect to slide by in this class..
His class was fairly easy as long as you did things his way. Forget about asking for help all he will do is make you feel stupid. You can learn a lot about writing but he makes horrible comments about a mixture of things and I at least usually left the class not feeling too good about the lecture. Do not expect any help from this guy. If you ask questions, he makes sarcastic remarks and makes you feel unworthy. I love English and it's my easiest subject, but I would have rather done anything else than go to his "lectures", AKA reading straight from the book. If you can, avoid this guy at all costs. Bemusing teacher who has very few sources for grading, and his classes are mainly movies or lectures from boring, dated textbooks. Can be unsavory at times, but not as much a jerk as the comments here make him out to be.

Perhaps the most surprising is that this professor is still licensed to teach. Reading material is outdated, lectures contain little pertinent information and his sarcastic, rude comments instill a sense of fear in every one of his students. When asked to send my grade, he agreed but never did it. TOTALLY AND UTTERLY INCOMPETENT.

I am taking his class right now. He isn't easy but he is hard. If you do the work required then you get good grades, if you come to class and wing it then you don't get good grades. Some people blurt out stupid comments, i mean STUPID COMMENTS, and he gives them a hard to encourage them to think before the speak.

i ususally dread going to this class. i usually show up 10 minutes late because he just makes smart ass jokes for the first half hour anyway. Usually i take a 30 min break in between to regenerate my patience to put up with his boringness. I stare at the clock alot and am usually texting the entire time just like the rest of my class.
This is (and i say this with the upmost sincerity) the worst teacher i have ever had. He's rude, excruciatingly boring, very unclear on what he expects in his papers, refuses to let anybody re-write their paper after he fails everyone in the class, requires a lot of books that get no use. I made the mistake of picking this teacher when my originally chosen class was full. He talks the whole time and does not make the assignments clear, I am only in my fourth week in the class and I already hate it. I study for my other classes in his class it is so pointless. Akers was one of the most influential English teachers Ive had. It's real world stuff like how to integrate all the technical critical thinking points seamlessly into any english paper. I still refer to all of the books.(Which are excellent choices) Only easy if you did the reading, and he stays after class to help you with everything.

This was the worst class that i have ever taken. it was based on him reading straight from a book. five of the one page essays were based on a mediocre 90's movie, and the whole second half of the class was based on a book that tries to prove that darwinian evolution is wrong by using biochemistry. i did all assignments and he failed me.
He is not hard if you follow instructions. I got a 112 percent on the final and 108 percent in the class. Just read the stories before a test, pay decent attention in class, and write the last research paper as if you agree with the book, even if you don't. I did NOT agree with "Darwin's Black Box", but I wrote it as if I did, and it pleased him.

Read the assignments= easy extra credit papers.Midterm is based on what he goes over in class=EASY. I took his class Fall of '09 and the first couple of weeks was painful because he came off a little arrogant and snobbish, but it turned out, his behavior attributed to the teaching of "critical thinking". Is difficult to pay attention in class, but don't just sit there and do nothing--rather take notes and write down all that he puts on board and pay attention to videos and stories when he goes over them because all of what he goes over is on the midterm and final. Pay attention and must read stories and write papers.
Akres is a GREAT teacher!!! His class was pretty easy if you put in the effort. What a great experience and a neat guy! Totally recommend taking this class!
Great Engl 101 class. Take a lot of notes and must bring textbooks to class b/c you'll use them all. He required about 5 textbooks, so I would just purchase them on craigslist.com and save $. He assigns papers and has a midterm and final. The exams are all on notes and he gives over 60 points extra credit so take advantage of those!

Alright, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Lectures, he just reads from some book. Thats half of the clas, then the other half go over the story or what ever. Waste of time, DO NOT TAKE. Very unclear on writing assignments. Grades are only Midterm and FINAL. So if you dont do so great on those, your finished. Extra credit are essays but worth 2-3 points..

I read through the comments AFTER I signed up for the class and I'm honestly wondering if this is the same teacher. I won't lie he's a little vague but his class is EXTREMELY easy. He's got a weird sense of humor but he's pretty funny and his midterm and final are a cake walk. This is of course if you payed attention in English 100. Took his class last semester and yes it was boring, but nobody like English. He is an easy teacher and idk why people are getting mad at him for not telling you when things are due, that's why he hands in the syllabus. Good easy teacher as long as you turn in your essays.
Akers is a very helpful teacher when you show him that you are putting forth the effort. Many lazy students were crying because he does not hold your hand. I verified due dates after every class and worked my tail off on every essay. He did not give free rides and was the issue with many 2nd-draft-only students in my class.
