he is an awesome teacher...he knows exactly what he is talking about and explains it well. he also has a good since of humor
he was a fun teacher, but liked to talk about his life alot. made class pretty enjoyable though. i would recomend him to anyone who wants to have fun in their gym class.
Dr. Altena is a good teacher, except the PED tests count as 3/4 of your grade, and class labs as 1/4! He doesn't know what is on the tests, so he talks about what HE thinks is important, not what the department thinks is important.TESTS ARE therefore HARD
He is extremely knowlageble about physical fitness, but does not do a good job in reviewing for tests, and therefore making the tests so damn hard. He shaves his legs and is too serious about fitness, so don't try to get to goofy in his class.
knows what he is talking about. makes you self concious though because he knows a little too much about dieting and fat. he's really nice and funny
He is very motivating and informative, but often strays from the book or lecture material, making it hard to study for tests. He often makes up for this by giving us a study day before exams.
Knowledgable
Dr. Altena is great. He's funny and you can tell he really knows what he's talking about. I have respect for any guy with his doctorate who would lower himself to teaching a class like ped 100. He's not too bad on the eyes either.
One of the better lab instructors for this class.
Good teacher. Makes the course less painful
This is a teacher that is fed up with the system, and it makes him really cool. You can't get any better than this guy for your lab class.
He doesn't like to force students to do lab work or physical activity so labs with him are painless. Spends a lot of time talking about his research and trading jokes with his students. A better than most lab teacher I would recomend to everyone.
Dr. Altena is a bit full of himself, but he makes class fun. Feel free to speak your mind because that makes class more interesting. I would take him again...but beware...he does shave his legs.
Good teacher, hard, but makes you learn it! Very willing to help out. Has 4-5 tests, no comprehensive final, lab points help, don't have to do much but go to lab, no attendence points. Overall I would recommend taking this class from him if you have to take the class!!
Class was hard at the beginning, but he gets less strict as the year progresses. Labs were okay, we got out early and didn't do too much. Notes on Powerpoint, study and read, you'll do fine!!
i dunno why everyone is saying he's a great teacher, what has he taught? all he does is ramble about himself. You NEVER go outside or do anything physical, just sit and listen to him. He does not prepare you for tests at all. take another teacher that at leasts gives you study guides.
I had actually failed every test as a result of skipping the lecture and somehow ended up with an A in the class!!!
Dr. Altena really knows his subject and is extremely passionate and loves to share his knowledge with the class. He took attendance maybe once and was just fun to hang out with. He can get a little full of himself at times and may seem overbearing at first but he's a good guy and great professor. Highly recommended!
Altena is a very fun professor, but very unreliable. There were many times he encouraged us to get help from him but he wouldn't show up when I made an appointment! Tests were difficult, but not impossible. Labs are way easy and most of the time you don't have them, or they are only 15 minutes long. This class is very exercise based.
Tests are application oriented, so you really have to understand the facts and be able to apply them in different situations. Don't be afraid to ask questions in & out of class. Dr Altena is more than willing to help. Notes on blackboard but you have to go to class since he adds a lot to them. Tough class but the content is really interesting.
PED 101 is a horrible required class. But, this guy is a great professor. He is a great speaker and seriously knows what he is talking about and has a great sense of humor. Just show up for class and do what you can in lecture. Lab is really were you need to stay on top of things. If he taught anything in my own major I would probably take it.
Dr Altena assumes all students are slobbering idiots until they show otherwise but he does change this opinion if you give him a good enough reason. You had better have exhausted all other resources before presenting him with a problem.
He's immature and wants everybody to fail pretty much. His goal is for as many people to drop his class.
He knows alot about the subject, maybe too much because he tells us alot of stuff that is not on the tests, which are extremely hard. Even the study guides dont help. But he does try to make jokes to get the material to stick in your head. Hes not that bad of a teacher
He is very funny and loves to get people involved. He is also easy to look at cause he is HOT!
This is a very hard class because the tests are very hard and it is hard to know what to study. I thought Altena was rude and insulting at first but he is starting to grow on me. He really knows his stuff and his lectures are interesting, just don't expect him to be a lot of help.
He's the worst professor that I have ever had. His goal is to fail as many people as he can. For a general required class like physiology, the information should be basic and general to grasp easily. He pretended like that class was pre-med. The tests were very unfair.
Great guy, funny and knows a whole heck of a lot more than anyone I've ever met. Tests=SUCK! The one test i studied for i got a worse grade on lol. Makes class fun though. Good for those who fall asleep but bad for those who don't like sucky tests.
Though he is somewhat blunt and offensive at times he is a really interesting teacher. He knows a lot and his lectures are full of good info. The tests suck but the class is standardized, so it's not his fault. He cracks jokes a lot, and will help you with any questions. You just have to do good in the lab to weight your grade.
He's the most immature and annoying professor at MSU. I'm an A student, and I received an F in his class. I'm a senior. He expects you to study ten hours a day for his class. Everybody has work and other classes to focus on. He quoted first day of class, "My goal is for as many people to fail." Take this class in summer with Dr. Nelsen :)
Dr. Altena is the biggest waste of payroll at MSU. Don't waste your hundreds of dollars taking his course. There is a great chance that this money will go down the drain, and that you will have to retake the course during the summer. There wasn't one question I knew 100 percent on any of his exams.
Dr. Altena has great knowledge of the material he teaches, and he expects maximum effort from his students. He may come off as abrasive, but he works very hard and can't comprehend how others wouldn't put forth the same effort in their major. I did well in his class because I studied constantly and went to him for help. Advice? Audio recorder.
He is so full of himself. but it's funny and you come out with some good jokes and quotes. I don't think it really matters who you take this class from. It sucks everywhere, and at least he is entertaining and easy on the eyes.
This class will suck no matter who you take. Altena is funny sometimes but you really have no idea what hes talking about. Its not that hes a bad teacher. the class just sucks
He curves all of his tests but they're EXTREMELY hard. He expects you to know everything and goes way too in depth about stuff that isn't all that important. I feel like I learned nothing from his class. If you study or don't study, you will probably not get the grade you want. But, he's the only one you have to take... so you're screwed.
He gives great examples and makes learning fun....Plus he is hot and it's easy to stay focus on him.
Very hard teacher. He lectures are not fun and the tests are very hard. Work hard in PED lab and you will still get a good grade.
Lecture sucks no matter what. He never posts grades online, so you have no idea how you did on tests. Tells the class "Don't ever call me. Don't ever email me. I won't respond." Very into himself, can be super funny at times. The class sucks no matter what. If I had to pick one teacher though, it would be Altena. He had his nice moments.
This isn't an easy class like you think it should be but Altena has great examples and stories. He definitely knows his stuff. He will try to scare you at first but just go to class and study. I recommend him over other professors.
I'm pretty sure this guy worships himself. He never grades tests, never answers emails, never returns phone calls. He should never make tenure. His lectures were somewhat interesting, but the tests that were made stupid hard (basic concepts anyone?) shadowed the small good points.
Altena seemed very interested in the info he was teaching, but he went really fast. Participation was pretty important b/c he gave participation points and quizzes almost everyday. The book came in handy while studying for tests (in contrast to what most people say). He seemed really intense most of the time, but had a sense of humor.
He taught my lecture part of PED 100. It is very boring and long. He uses powerpoints. He won't help you with anything.
Good teacher but terrible class. Crystal clear lectures but the tests aren't designed by him and has ewll over 300 students per semester so the no e-mail or call is expected. Readily meets in office and makes appointments.
He talks fast sometimes but he knows what he's talking about and makes the subject matter a little more interesting.
While he is a very good teacher the way the PED 100 course at missouri state is designed is absolutely terrible. Unfortunately the tests aren't designed by the students and are practically designed to fail even the most studious students. Crystal clear teacher, but I would burn the course with fire if I had the chance.
He's pretty classless in person and not a very good teacher.
He is a terrible professor and he is not in the least bit accessible. On top of him being terrible so is the class format. Don't cross him in any way, or you will pay for it.
Literally told my class, don't call me, I wont answer. Dont E-mail me, I'll delete. Talk to the lab teacher, I have too busy of a schedule for emailing my 500 students. He a fast talker and uninterested in how well you do in the class
He reads off a powerpoint in a monotone voice and the tests are impossible no matter what you do. However, he is the easiest lecture teacher. He knows what he's talking about but has zero time for students outside of class.
He did say not to call or email him, for he wouldn't respond. Many people in my class needed help and confirmed what he had warned..... he doesn't respond. The tests are really hard. I studied for hours and still didn't do so hot.
I like this professor, but the tests are impossible.
Provides unnecessary information that goes above an introductory course level and is not found on the tests. The tests are unfair as few of the questions come from the lectures or the book. I have no idea how anybody could possibly be prepared for them. I hate the clickers used to for answering. He talks too fast and will not answer questions.
Study the book, powerpoints, the added links from the PED100 website to help with exams and quizzes. The tests are critical thinking, not black and white. Learn how to take these types of tests and you can pass. It will also help with other exams at MSU. Go to lab, it will definitely help your grade.
The course overall is a pretty difficult one. Since you only meet once a week the material gets thrown at you quickly. He gets it across fairly well though. In class quiz questions with the nxt card - pay attention, because you lose points if you get questions wrong. Lab brought my grade from a D to a B.. so go to that, and you'll be okay.
Hard to follow. His lectures jump around a lot. He flat out told the class not to try and contact him because he wouldn't reply. He does several in-class pop quizzes. The questions on there usually end up on the exams. MUST READ textbook, powerpoints, and take GREAT notes or record lecture! Everything he says IS TESTABLE!
His lectures were basically important segments that you needed to pay attention to out of the book. His lecture and powerpoints should be second to reading the book because the tests are made by the department.
The lecture part of this class is going to be hard no matter who you take. He seems nice enough but flat out says not to email him, which was a bit annoying. Hours of studying leads to no better than a C on the tests. The quizzes are difficult, too. Go to all the labs and it can bring a D lecture grade to a B overall.
Brilliant teacher, very knowledgeable. I learned so much in this class and he was always available to aid his students. If you are willing to study and devote time to his class, you will succeed. Despite what previous ratings claim, his goal is not to fail students. However, he does push you. Fantastic course.
First of all PED 100 is a terrible class. That being said, Dr. Altena is a pretty good teacher. He doesn't take any crap, but he will help you with a question if you ask.
PED 100 is the worst structured class ever. The tests don't go along with the lectures or the reading at all. They are really difficult. Altena is incredibly into himself. He is very proud of what he has done. He is unapproachable and doesn't make himself available. He says not to email him. He is a very smart guy, though.
Great teacher and very knowledgeable. Not an easy course, but its not supposed to be. If you don't look at the take notes or don't come to class you will not do well.
He is a really good teacher and very passionate about this class. This class definitely isn't easy. I would recommend him though.
This was by far the worst class I have ever taken. There is no reason why a general education class should be this hard! The teacher is what makes this class difficult. He is a horrible teacher and I would not recommend that anyone ever take this class with him. Tests are very hard and don't follow the lecture powerpoints at all! Worst teacher! :(
He's a good instructor, it's just a terrible class. It's not his fault the lecture sucks. He's funny and relates a lot of material to college life. The tests use info from both lecture and book, though he just focuses on the lecture. Wants to people to do well. Be interested in taking a different class with him.
he is a great teacher, and really cares about the subject. Read the textbook and study the notes! the tests are really hard! but lab grade will help. I personally like the subject so i thought his lectures were interesting.
DONT judge this teacher based on his 100 level classes. He doesn't have sympathy for freshman who are irresponsible and make excuses. If you take him for an upper level class he is incredibly knowledgable and willing to help. Very nice and easy going the classes are difficult because the material is difficult but he teaches it better than others.
He talked extreamly fast. He was not accepting of questions during class. He did give us a curve on our tests at the end of the semester, but this class is extreamly hard to get an A in.
It was a rough class but as long as you read ahead of time and pay attention to his lectures, you should do fine. Dr. Altena tries his best to help you understand the material, even if it is hard.
He is a WONDERFUL instructor, I would take him again if I could. Do not judge him based off of the KIN 100. He is not very fond of freshman.. He holds study sessions nearly every day of the week which were extremely helpful. While this course was very difficult, if you really listen and go to the study sessions when you can, you will be fine.
Could not stand this teacher. Very judge mental. I don't understand why people say don't judge him bc he doesn't like freshman, and that's supposed to make it better? I worked my butt off in that class and still couldn't pass a test. I am beyond glad I never have to see him again.
Do not take him. He was an awful professor. He is super funny but he isn't helpful at all. I would go into the test thinking I knew everything because he said that all the answers were in the book and I still got D's on every test. This class is awful.
I found Professor Altena fairly useful. I got a D on the first exam, the first D I've ever gotten in my life. I found that the book is of no use at all whatsoever, so I started only focusing on lecture material. I got an A on both following exams, including the final. He has a great personality, and tried to stay lighthearted at 7:45 AM!
If you do not study or pay attention in this class, you will fail! This class is one of the toughest classes you will take. He does curve his test because no one can do well on it. He makes his test the day before, so asking people who took the class previously won't be as useful
Its not an easy class because its not easy material that he teaches and he wont hold your hand a treat you like a highschooler or even a college freshman. He hold university students to a higher level of scholarly expectation that is not unreasonable. He is very knowledgable and if you put in effort he will definitely see that and you will do wel
You almost need to take a nutrition or anatomy class before you attempt this class. I studied hard but still got B's on all the exams. However, if you go to every class and lab and participate with the clicker, it was enough points to get an A. Print off the lecture powerpoints, there isn't much time for note-taking. Barely used book.
he's a great guy, not the best teacher. he expects that you know things for a gen ed that are not common sense. he will put up a clicker question that 60% of the students get wrong and then move on without addressing it. if someone asks about it he just repeats the answer but does not explain
This isn't an easy class but Dr. Altena is a great teacher. The material is difficult and he understands that so he tries to make it as clear as anyone could make physiology clear. The tests are hard so be prepared. You can skip class but it won't benefit you since his tests are over his lectures, not the book.
You will feel very intimidated at the beginning but he knows his stuff and will do whatever to help you do well in the class. Comes off rude, but he's just joking! Plenty of extra credit that comes at the end of the semester! DO NOT forget your clicker!
dude is super cool and really loves what he is teaching. he tends to get off task and the class i took he didnt make the test the department head did so he didnt know what would be on it or what we should study for exactly but still made a boring class fun to go to
He is very blunt, but also entertaining. He has a wealth of knowledge in many areas that helps students
I have not felt passion from a professor like this before. Dr. A wants us to see life differently beyond the class topics but but wants every student to think about everything before creating a perspective. He is brash. He is offensive. He he fair. He said he treats students the way he was want his sons to be treated. Rare.
One of the best
He's very real with you and is an amazing and caring person
He's kind of intimidating in class but he's super approachable in person outside of class. If you make the effort to go find him in his office when you have a question, he will respect you more. Lectures included clickers the semester I took.
Amazing professor... extremely knowledgeable of the subject matter. Cares that you understand the material. Would definitely take a class from him again.
