This was maybe the hardest and funnest class I ever had. Dr. Alvarez mixes education and entertainment into an interesting history class. if you hate history you might try this class, if you don't mind learning something and doing work.
Dr. Alvarez is extremely helpful and he makes learning about history fun. Definitely take this class!
The readings are interesting and informative. He is very knowledgeable about the colonial history of the US but he hardly lectures and puts you into groups to discuss the readings. Confuses you about the readings and has weekly homework due. Extremely harsh grader but he does make you learn new information.
He talks too much and makes many get sleepy, will also grade against your favor
He knows his stuff well, and makes it very funny.Pop quizes-very frequent. can't just depend on lectures. must read. NOT that clear in what exactly he expects of you for the final. says so much information, that its hard to really know what you'll be tested on. Also, he has a foul mouth, But I will say that he is a nice and funny guy.
There is a lot of reading but his humor makes up for it.
Readings are phenomenal and so are his lectures. Relies heavily on groups which are a great experience, if he sits with the one your in. Otherwise, you end up with people who don't do the readings and regurgitate what you said to garner the professors praise. From experience his grading is more lenient towards average students and favorites.
If you complete the readings prior to class, you will do just fine. He is very straight forward and honest. Hands down the best professor of my college career thus far!
gives WAY WAY too much content for a 101 class. expect lots of readings, journals, worksheets, 2 midterm, and final. would not recommend this professor to anyone who isn't into history.
Gives too much work. do expect lots of readings and LOTS of assignments.
Tough, but shapes you into a better student. Very understanding as well. Gives a lot of readings, but for free through PDF (which means more money for food!). SEE HIM DURING OFFICE HOURS FOR ESSAYS NO MATTER HOW BIG OR SMALL, do the readings (cry if you have to), and you'll do fine. Show up to class and talk, participation is essential.
Alvarez is a good professor. He is a tough grader but he wants students to understand the material and improve. Take good notes in class and make sure to answer the questions in the essay prompts that he gives.
Took him during winter session. Such a tough class in 2 weeks and even though he says there is no right or wrong answer he critics you for everything. Lots of reading and long essays. You can pass the class just be ready for a lot of work.
Took him during WINTER. A lot of readings in 2 weeks. 10 Assignments, Research project 3-4 pages and Final essay 8-10 pages. Highly recommend to take notes during lectures because the final will be about the lectures and your understanding on the text. you can pass his class, if you come on time and pay attention to his lectures.
Dr. Alvarez is a great professor. He is a genuinely good guy and really cares about what he does. He is a clear orator and doesn't cut any corners in his classes. I would definitely take him again. Great person, better professor.
i didn't like his teaching methods
Avoid this professor!!! The amount of work he gave is a lot for a 101 class, so if you're not into history don't take him! Not many seemed to be passing since less and less people were coming to class.
His a hard one! Is just a lot of reading every single class. From my point of view, is too much for so little time and points. I did not understood his way of teaching. I would not take him.
He gives pop quizzes from the readings at the beginning of class. So that means you must attend class. 1/3 of your grade is dependent on those quizzes. If you don't know the answer to a question on the quiz, answer it anyways, you know the answer, you just don't know how to word it. He gives partial credit anyways. Better than leaving it blank.
Dr. Alvarez does not hand you your grade. He is exeptionally blunt, so it if you are not equipped to handle honesty, then do not take his class. He is an amazing lecturer and is super passionate about what he teaches. Incredibly, incredibly intelligent- do not doubt this. His classes are always entertaining.
I took Alvarez in Fall 2015 and his class does require a good amount of work, so make sure you do his assignments and expect to do PLENTY of reading because it's pretty crucial in his class. Also be ready to do plenty of writing about what you've learned throughout the course. Alvarez is also pretty funny, so get ready for a laugh as well.
Just don't take this class, avoid it at all cost. He doesn't care if you have other priorities. This is a general education requirement, but makes it like it's an upper division.
Hands down the best history professor at CSUDH. is the class hard? YES. But he is the only professor who has ever motivated me to go beyond the surface. And holy cow he knows his stuff. Prepare to ready and write everyday. Go to his office hours for extra help! College is hard work, if you don't have the work ethic choose another professor.
The questions to consider he gives you for homework to go along with your reading are the exact same ones that show up on the quizzes, midterm, and final. Everything is free response. If you study the questions and read, you'll pass. Attendance is mandatory, he gives you up to 4 days, but after that he deducts points from final grade or fails you.
You earn your grade. He gave 40 questions to consider throughout and on midterm asked 13, then plus 60 more to consider & final was 15 cumulative questions. All written answers, but are exactly the same. Pop quizzes are random & mixed chapter questions. You have to read and take notes from his lecture. Helpful in shaping you into a better student.
Textbook is online for free. He gives .5 points for trying with a bs answer, dont leave anything blank. Answer the questions in a word document as you go, don't wait last minute. He is straightforward on what to expect (overall class 100 points) 4 pop quizzes +2 extra credit, 5 source analysis, midterm, Final.
He cusses a lot. His lectures get your attention, overall, hard professor. He expects you to read the text & all his quizzes and tests are written answers so you have to know your stuff. He's not hard if you read, I'm glad I took him.
I loved this class. Professor Alvarez was hilarious and I almost looked Forward to going to class. The lectures were fun. Plus he gives You the questions to the quizzes and exams ahead If time.
Prof Alvarez is really funny and made this a fun class. There was no book to buy which was nice. He gives all the questions ahead of time. But the pop quizzes were still hard. Luckily some quizzes We're wxtra credit.
Although Prof. Alvarez is funny, his grading can be a bit difficult but as long as you attend class and do your work, you'll pass.
Beautiful human. Great professor.
As long as you do the reading and studying, you should be passing with a good grade. He as a professor has my respect.
One of my favorites! He cusses a lot but it keeps us intrigued. His lectures are amazing. He tells stories that we could possibly relate to and he also talks about his experiences. His grading is fair and easy. Not a history person but really loved the class and him
Alvarez is hilarious in class, but I hated the homework. He is a very vague and tough grader, and he takes quite a while to pass back graded papers.
Do the reading and listen to the lectures and you will pass the class with a B or A. Take notes on the readings and lectures. I enjoyed this history class!
Very funny professor. He tends to assign a lot of miniature assignments and grades them harshly, but he gives good feedback on how to get better. Easy to access outside of class via email or office hours. His lectures are okay but the grade is through readings and assignments.
This class was challenging. The readings were heavy and Prof Alvarez sometimes had a hard time explaining the readings as well. It was important to attend class and make sure you understand the material. The class was only worth 100 pts. So study hard b/c the tests, paper and pop quizzes were hard. Work hard & you will pass.
Very great professor. Lectures are important but read the online textbook(which is free) and you will easily pass. Take the pop quizzes seriously from the start!
The funniest professor I have had so far. He's very passionate about the subject. It's a very straight-forward class. Show up, take notes, and complete the readings and you'll pass. BEWARE he is very picky about the way you answer the questions on quizzes/exams. put detail into your answers.
He is a really great professor! Extremely outspoken (he's liberal, which is fine with me!). He's such a great lecturer with current examples from pop culture and he will thoroughly explain the rules and regulations of his essay assignments. There is no textbook, just long free reading online. So beware of that! Good luck he's awesome!
Thomas Alvarez is an absolute gem. Lots of students will argue and say that he's "mean" and grades harshly. However, he just wants to make sure you're learning- not memorizing information. He's very clear with his grading criteria, read and answer the questions for each chapter, and you'll do spectacular on the quizzes, midterms, and the final. :)
GET ON THIS GUY'S GOOD SIDE BY ENGAGING AND BEING NICE AND FLATTERY. THEN, he'll be chill w/ you! DO ALL YOUR WORK AND MORE! DON'T be on your phone or laptop during class or he'll hate on you. BRING 8.5X11 in. paper for quizzes. Take notes during lectures. Elaborate on your quiz/test answers: he looks for specifics. POP QUIZZES SO ALWAYS COME!
Prof. Alvarez is tough! However, he gives you all the necessary information to allow you to start analyzing and thinking things in depth. This becomes a useful tool for all his required writing assignments! For this class he did provide the readings on BB . . . there is a lot, and you can't fake the funk. Participation is key, so go to class!
Beyond offensive, incredibly insulting! Tries HARD to be funny, but is really just very condescending and unnecessarily vulgar.
Mr. Alvarez is very interesting in his lectures. Beware that he loves to make jokes that may offend people. Mr. Alvarez gave little to no homework but beware that theres weekly quizzes. Wrong answers receive some credit no matter the answer which was helpful.
In this class, you had to keep up with all the new readings which were each about 40 pages long and were all boring. He then has you write papers every week on the readings and he doesn't even read them he only reads the thesis and topic sentence for each paragraph. The midterm and the final are also based entirely on the readings and stressful.
There are 11 pop-quizzes throughout the semester and the last 3 are extra credits. you do not know when the quiz is coming so come every day and take it seriously from the start. you only need to read the online (free) book to answer the questions that are coming in the quizzes that he gives it to you on Blackboard.
This professor doesn't mess around. He wants his students to actually learn and not just remember he goes over all the reading in class and gives you the questions to every exam and quiz so nothing is ever a surprise it's up to the student to study the answer! He is amazing and funny.
Hes alright; talks about about himself and gets sidetracked a lot. He says that his essays are easy and gives you the format and intro but idk about that. A lot of reading, but its informational.
I was hesitant to take this professor because of his reviews, but he's amazing. He is clear about what he expects and is always willing to help and responds to emails really fast. He does give a lot of readings, but it's college you can't expect to not work hard. Overall, a great professor and I am so happy to be taking him again this semester.
One of my favorite professors. I have taken more than one of his classes and I have to say he is one of the best. He is clear about what he expects and tries to ensure that all his students succeed. He is very funny and you will never be bored during one of his lectures. Also, he responds to emails fast and is super accessible for help. 10/10
This class consisted of so many readings, group papers, and he's a tough grader. He'll give you feedback and tell you you're wrong but will not tell you what the right answer is and 'till this day I have no idea what the correct answer is. He rants/complains and calls out his students during zoom class with something they emailed him about.
He is passionate and straight forward and smart, think of the bigger picture with his readings, learn to read and look for topic and sub topics first paragraph last paragraph then the inside of the text. in the past CSUDH History classes 200 and up were closed to none History majors, if its not your major find another Prof. I would take him again.
He doesn't teach the class. You read and do study questions by yourself but it's confusing asf. You will have a quiz once a week for the whole semester and it's hard. You are given little time so you stress and probably will fail most of your quizzes. You are partially on your own for this class and its not worth your time. Save yourself!
Literally the worst professor to walk this planet. Doesnt have any lectures, just gives you quizzes that are 7 minutes for 5 questions.. every week. He also has canvas discussions but doesnt grade anything and leaves them to the end of the semester where he gives u a terrible grade, do urself a favor and dont ever choose this guy
You have to do quizzes on the readings every week. You are given only 7 minuets to answer 5 questions, sad part is that some questions are more scenario based and not even about the readings. When asking for help professor does not provide, tells you to just read. Can tell professor is doing the job for money not for students and it shows in class.
He is not willing to help you. He doesn't teach the class and apparently, his excuse for first online teaching is that students are just an experiment. He doesn't teach cause we are an experiment and wants to see if we pass or fail by ourselves. Don't take this professor even if it is in-person learning. He's still difficult to deal with in person
Professor Alvarez was really helpful on zoom and always available to answer questions. each week there was 4-8 pages of an online text and a short video to watch , a discussion post and a multiple choice quiz. Quiz questions were repeated on midterm and final and the course grade was curved so getting an A was easy
Loved this class. There was no text to buy. He wrote his own text and made some interesting youtube videos. He had a "no fail" policy if you turned in all the work
I recommend not choosing him as your history teacher. He always loses track of when he teaches and barely explains what is going to happen on the quizzes. There is one quiz every week and its difficult to find information from reading the texts provided.
He isn't willing to help you if you're struggling or in need of extra credit. He always says that he'd be willing to help, but he gives a response that equals to saying nothing. He also gives tests that require reading, but the tests always aim at very specific details you wouldn't even remember reading. Also his lectures dont help the tests at all
He was not very helpful and his quizzes were nothing really like the content. We mostly had to learn through readings and crash courses which is so unhelpful. On blackboard my grade was a 95% but since I had low quiz scores it brought my grade to a C because of his grading scale. I had great scores on discussions but it did not help me at all.
First day of class he basically told us that we are lazy and we should be "used" to this type of learning already so that should give you a summary of what kind of teacher he is. Sophomore advice, listen to the ratemyprofessor ratings when they said DON'T TAKE HIM lol.
I must have been in different classes from other people who posted. There was almost no reading in this class and the quizzes came directly from the study questions and he covered the questions that were on the quiz in the lecture before we took the quiz. This made the quizzes so easy. The midterm and final had the same questions as the quizzes.
As someone who really enjoys History and knows a lot about history, I got to say this professor made me hate the topic. The dude is a really tough grader and docks you down for opinionated answers and he just grades writing assignments with no remorse whatsoever. Listen to the reviews and don't take this class.
Discussion posts were great for padding the grade because he graded them super easy and there were three that were extra credit. Same with the quizzes they came directly from the study questions. On the midterm and final, he let everyone write their short essay before hand and just copy and paste it into the exam.
I've never had a professor who's anything close to being as bad as him. His grading scale is whack, tests are VERY specific, and his lectures do NOT help the tests at all. He truly doesn't care about his students. Just save yourself and don't take him.
Professor Alvarez was not the best professor. I felt like he did not make things clear and he assigns a lot of work. His class is very test heavy so you will need to know what is going on in order to pass. There is a midterm and final.
The class is very interesting but it is VERY heavy on reading. The difficult part is the reading is rather dry. His lectures don't really have much material, as in, he doesn't really add much, that would be my only complaint regarding his teaching style. Even though the class is difficult, he is a fair grader. Do the reading and you should be fine
Just save yourself and do not take him. If he's the only prof left, just wait till next semester to take history. His grading scale is unreasonable and he doesn't help us. Staying on top of the class and reading his readings don't help. His tests are extremely difficult and very picky with discussion boards that are supposed to be opinion based.
Professor Alvarez is very straight forward, class is not difficult if you actually show up and do the work. Time consuming videos and readings but manageable and interesting.
Normally I'm an A student, but I found myself hating this class. Red flag was when he compared himself to the only other professor I've ever had a hard time with. Claims he's preparing you for HIS 300+, but I found his help redundant. He wants student participation, but makes it difficult to do that with the tangents he goes off on. Just avoid him.
He's a tough grader but overall the class was very enjoyable and funny. Attendance is really important to pass the class as well.
Readings are quite heavy, consist of 2 readings per lecture, extremely time consuming. After doing the reading's you must answer multiple questions onto your notebook with a pencil and this takes up even more of your time. This class is more for people who are history majors/lovers of history. I don't recommend this class at all, save yourself.
Don't take him it's going to be the worst decision ever made. He seems cool and funny at first but as soon as you aren't up to his standards he's going to change quick. I started having personal problems and wasnt in school much and he left me of group projects. I asked him about my concerns and said my personal life "probably isn't that busy". BAD
he was very nitpicky with everything that we did. there was a lot of reading and notes that he didn't even check yet would deduct points for tiny details. he was alright but i wouldn't take him again
it might be the fact that i'm not interested in history, but this class was hard. lots of reading and questions for each class, a lot of group work, and tough grader. good thing though is that he's a great lecturer and gives specifics on what you could improve on your papers!
There were no quizzes or exams. The midterm and final were three paragraph group essays and he told us what the questions were in the syllabus. The professor also told us how to write them. He gave a choice between doing short readings or watching videos. You have to take notes on them but he gave you a B if you just wrote something for each day.
Bro this teachers work will take ALL your time out the day. So much reading every week and lots of random pop quizzes. If you work and have other classes that give lots of homework, your setting yourself up for A LOT of stress or failure…he's a cool person though.
I really wouldn't recommend he's always late, gives random pop quizzes, and assigns tons of homework every day—readings, videos, and discussion work. There's no extra credit, and his exam rules are super strict; you can't make up or retake them. You only get three unexcused absences, and if you miss a quiz during that time, you're out of luck.
I work full time and pay child support this class was to work load heavy, Took up most of my day.
weekly readings that you post and respond to class mates fairly easy readings grading is a little weird he will give you 2.3 on some areas still managed a B I would take him again. some small papers here and there work load is okay
The professor tends to go on rants for entire class periods, no in-class lectures so you have to do his reading outside but even with the reading the class remains difficult. Some time he assigns 20+ pages of reading a night and he offers a study guide that barely assists with the weekly quiz. Look for better options and better professors.
Horrible experience, he grades more as if its a english class than a history. To much emphasis on trying to connect specific points (his) rather than learning the subject. Would never one of his classes again.
He is very educated and def knows what he is talking about . But if I'm being real the work load is unnecessary he does way too much. He is inconsiderate with the work loads , but if you want to learn about history he will teach you a lot and open your mind. But be aware of heavy work loads and tough grading .
Professor Alvarez is a cool teacher. His midterms are just Essays 1.5-2 pages. He does grade work. Careful writing because he is very adamant about no AI. work every week based on readings.
I took this professor for 2 classes 348&355 He makes you write a lot. He should teach English instead. He makes u do ur essays and responses on Google doc so he can see your edit history. He's given many students zeros due to his claim they used AI. Find another elective to take. Tough class
