I've heard good things about him, but there aren't many nice comments I have about his teaching. Too much Greek material covered. Very boring class.
he keeps you interested and is insanely intelligent. it's rather amusing when he gets all excited about a topic too.
a great teacher to say the least.
Very intelligent and witty, fun to watch when he rants about a topic. Knows his stuff cold. Covers alot of material, you'll be ok if you study. Makes Greek civilization fascinating. Very interesting class, I had a blast.
He's awesome! The class is really interesting. You can tell that he really enjoys teaching the material.
really good
Enjoys teaching the class, but can't write for his life.
GREAT class. This man knows his material. You'll learn a lot.

WORST TEACHER

Man... this class sucked... never go to lecture... read the books and youll get a B+
great teacher, tests can be hard, but he makes the class interesting. My TA was very unfair though (Chris Riga)
amazing teacher! he has been teaching world civ for over 10+ years. unlike most teachers, he enjoys teaching world civ. the best world civ prof you can get.
Cool guy, enjoys his subject and really knows his stuff. My TA was Chris Riga, too, and he screwed me over. GET A DIFFERENT TA!!
class- boring, Chris as a TA- HARD, tests-hard....you can skip lecture if you need to- depends who TA is......
If you go to lecture this guy will keep you interested even if you've been out drinking the night before.
Great teacher, really enjoyed his class. Also had Riga, avoid him at all costs, although he did get better as the year went on, it still was much harder than it needed to be
Taught Greek History...very interesting man, but the tests are very difficult. Make sure you know the material like the back of your hand. Looking for an easy A? Avoid this class; however, if you want to learn a lot and enjoy a challenge, take him.
If Riga is your TA, you will get a C. With another TA you can get an easy B. But why would you take this class when there are so many other world civ professors that give easy A's? It is impossible to get an A with Barry, even for honors students.

Greek Civ, I liked the course and the material we covered. He taught it very well and it was very interesting and engaging, but his exams are all about memorizing quotes, instead of what we actually LEARNED in the course.
BRILLIANT man, original thinker, lecture is TOTALLY interesting: positives: course is easy to pass, only recitation quizzes, midterm, and final--ALL basic, easy to pass (just requires some reading apprx. an hr a wk)NEGATIVES: RIGA (TAKE BEN COSTELLO HE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!)
A very boring man/class, I had him for recitation as well and he was totally arrogant and elitist. His handwriting was particularly hard to read. Way to obsessed about Greek civilization. My least favorite professor that I have had thus far at UB.
He had horrible hand writing.

His tests were difficult. Only two, and they were not multiple choice but essay questions. If you are taking this class as a pre-req only, don't bother. If you plan on going into english, history, classics, Anthropology, etc. He is a god send. Very good professor in the classical sense. (no pun intended)
probably one of the best professors on campus, i would recommend taking any class offered with him, he is a very smart and sometimes funny person, he will make your class experience worth every minute, his tests aren't easy unless you pay attention, then youll have no problems
since when do E's look like R's in the english language....thank you Barry for teaching me that, and that only....
Hilarous guy, I don't know how he is in UGC, but in HIS 223 he is soo funny and is making jokes all the time, he grades test fairly, all you have to do is go to class and enough a few laughs while learning something.
Dr. Barry is hilarious. He consistently goes off into tangents and has the funniest stories. The class is pretty easy; there are only 2 tests and some quizzes in RES (the TA's tell you what the topics for the tests are). His handwriting is hard to decipher but that’s the only bad thing about the class.
Ummm this guy is bad. He does not teach history at all. And dont bother taking notes because you can not understand his hand writing. There are much easier UGC 111 professors.
This guy is hilarious and tests are pretty easy. His writing is really bad but his letters are the same- once you decipher his code of the English language you can understand what was written. The ta's tell you what is on the exam- just study that and you're set to go.
Barry Rocks!!! His writing skills are definately...(clears throat)lacking but hey he's a lefty writing on an overhead! He taught the course with enthusiasm and excitement which made it really interesting. He grades very fairly too, 1 mid-term and 1 final which is no problem if you come to class. All in all, a great guy and a great class!!
barry is a good teacher if you like to learn about the religions and philosophy of cultures and not much else. only two test and a few quizzes they are all essay tests but they arent very hard if you study at all. overall a pretty good professor

Only 2 exams, pretty easy 5 identifications, 1 essay for each test, dont really need to read if you go to lecture, Sometimes hard to stay awake but thats because its history. one of the better profs ive had
This Professor was amazing. I had him for World Civ. 111 and took him again for 112. He is so passionate about what he teaches, and with history that is a must. He knows a great deal about what he teaches. I must say he is possibly the best teacher I've had at UB!!!
Dr. Barry is probably one of the best professors at UB. He is very knowledgable and one can learn a lot in his class. His tests, from my experience, were solely based on lecture and handouts from lecture. Textbooks proved to be useless. If you attend every lecture, get all the handouts given during lecture, and study them, you'll do fine.
Great guy, had him for both my world civs and a greek civ class - he's the renaissance man of UB. Really funny and passionate, He's one of my favorites
if your one of those people like me who get bored very easily and don't end up going to lectures but just recitiations...good luck. i usually get by with only going to recitations but this time i really struggled because test was on handout recieved in lecture, good side was that there are only 5 questions on final
If you aren't interested in world civ and only taking it because you have to then avoid him at all cost. There are way easier world civ teachers then him.
I can't help but be annoyed at the comments that I read. Barry is a very easy professor, so long as you know how to study for him. This requires showing up to class and not sounding like a moron when you write your essays. Very, very easy if you're actually in college.
Funny, corky guy that can make class fun sometimes. must go to lectures, but they are at eleven so its not bad. Recitations are easy and quizzes likewise. dont bother taking his notes from the overhead- cant read a damn thing he writes in all honesty looks like cuneiform. gets off-topic pretty easy which is bad for studying and getting info u need
there is lots of reading expected, and the textbooks are really boring. he reads to us during class, which is annoying, but if you highlight the passages he is reading from, this is where the essay questions for the midterm and final come from. final and midterm exams are weighted at 50% and 25% respectively, so know your stuff!
Teaches religion rather than Art, Politics n stuff like that. I cant understand his hand-writing at all. He knows his stuff though. A lot of Bible , Koran n other such religious readings. As his policy, he will never give anyone 100% - he explicitly mentions it! Hard course for a GenEd
Professor Barry gives the easiest midterms/finals ever. Homework consists mostly of reading. His passion is funny, he has a wealth of knowledge. Granted, it does suck that he will never give a 100%, you can still get an A. Miranda Barnett is an awesome TA, get her if you can.
He crazy, but a genius, hes entertaining in that respect but he doesnt teach well, not the worst, but not the best, he seems like hes going senial
He knows his stuff
He doesnt "do" math, computers, or email. Barry has a real passion and it comes across at times very humorous when he has to stop himself from indulging too much in a topic. The class was extremely easy and I gained a lot of insight from it.
A little out there, but he knows his stuff. At times very hard to keep interest. I was able to skip many classes and still pass with an A bc my TA was great her name was lindy dewey.
Not an easy class, but great if you are into this kind of stuff. Awesome prof. I got a B, and had to work for it. However the passion that he teaches with and amount of knowledge he passes on offsets any negatives (hand writing, office hours)
He is the best history i ever had in my life. This man is a genius!! he knows history like the back of his hands and you can learn a lot from him. Its just a midterm and a final which arent that hard if u pay attention in class. I got an 'A' with no problem.
He knows his history. You can get a great grade by just going to class and taking notes and going to recitation. Easy teacher overall, sometimes really funny to laugh at because he'll ramble on about stuff.. for REC go for Barnett shes amazingly easy and ridiculously nice!
He was an ok professor for a Gen ed. You can tell however he would rather be teaching a higher level class about the greeks. He was funny when he would go off onto another subject and then say "never mind that". Only reason I didn't take him again for 112 was because I got a really bad ta when i was with him.
Barry was an ok professor but the good thing was that I got an easy A in his course. In the mid-term I had a D+ and after the final, an overall A. Barry is deeply obsessed wth greek history and can become funny sometimes when he starts talking off topic and then says 'Never mind that'. My TA though was the worst. He was even older than barry and mo

He is one of the best history teacher's I've ever had! ALways adds some humor to the class and gets himself on tangents as he's talking. An awesome lecture speaker. I will definitly try to take more of his classes.
His lectures were actually interesting to attend, just very difficult to read the overhead because of his handwriting. Your TA will make or break you, unfortunately I had the worst TA ever so it's been a rough semester. Barry himself is very insightful, and he does have recitation groups so if you can, get into one of his.
not a bad class. he is interesting to watch teach. sometimes he looses focus and goes off on a tangent. the t.a. can make or break you in this class. don't waste your time trying to read the things he is writing on the over head. it is a waste of time. just pay attention to what he says and you won't need to understand what he rights.
If you're a person that learns well on your own and know the class material then this will be a easy class for you because you never have to go except for recitation. Go to recitation get good grades for midterm n final n you will do well. B/c the entire class grade is based on participation in recitation, midterm, and final.
Pro. Barry is an awesome professor. He's very interesting to listen to, and the material is easy to follow. It IS hard to read his notes on the board, but he reads it all out loud and makes it easy to understand the lecture. Interesting and intelligent professor, EASY WORLD CIV CLASS if you just pay attention
This class was absolutely pointless. You can't read his hand-writing, and he gets side-tracked easily. He loves talking about the other classes he teaches, but doesn't actually teach the class your currently sitting in. Tests were 5 quotes that you had to identify and an essay. Also dont get stuck with a bad TA like FORAN!! UGC should not be a req!
The TA is really important in this section. My TA was very helpful. Attendance to all the recitation sessions is important. Classes are important as well, especially the points that Prof Barry writes before he starts teaching. It was an interesting class. Prof Barry doesnt use email though!
Hes heraclitus and he controls the wind. Possesses time traveling orange googles and his briefcase is a mystery. He loves saying "Aw what the hell" and talking about his wine. He scolded me for asking the question everyone else was thinking. His office is impossible to find, almost like it is in another dimension.
Professor Barry is such an awesome teacher! He loves his subject so much and his lectures are so interesting to listen to. He tells history as a story, not just a bunch of names and dates. He helps you understand why things happened, not just hammer that they did.
His class is very easy for critical thinkers. He has no problem stating that his class is not a names and dates class, though some are important and you must remember those few. I think he's the sexiest old man I've ever met. He can be quoted, "Second greatest idea of the human race: Squash'em like bugs." Full of vibrance/enthusiasm. Take his class
Barry is an encyclopedia of knowledge, just ask him any ?. I had him for UGC 111/ UGC 112 & I'm taking him for Greek history next year- as long as you figure out his hieroglyphic writing you are ok- the points he writes down at the beginning of class, if you copy those, leave the class and wiki them later- you r set 4 the test, skim chapters too.
Very good professor. Really passionate about the subject. Knows an incredible amount of information. Only two grades are the midterm and final, but as long as you show up to class they aren't too bad. Reading is fairly interesting too.
AMAZING!!! Kind of set in his opinions, but loves it when people express and back up opinions contradictory to his own. A great lecturer. Classes are intriguing, and he's hilarious. You don't need to read the book. Only downsides are his weird grading scheme, his bad handwriting, and his disuse of technology. Looks like the guy from "Up."
Excellent professor - he is a complete riot. He is more interested in concepts rather than names and dates. If you're in the Honor's College, take his seminar. It's interesting and really easy. Handouts are very important, so if you don't go to class, get them somehow.
Handwriting is not legible, talks through class and doesn't give much notes, but paying attention to lectures is important, i honestly have to say that alot of how you do in this course is determined by your TA, exams are not difficult if your TA helps you prepare well, if not.... good luck :)
Great professor. Lectures are incredibly interesting. Two tests (midterm and final) constitute bulk of grade but they aren't hard even though his grading system is weird. If you get him for honors recitation that is great, his discussions are very interesting. Easy to understand. Handwriting is bad but he speaks everything clearly. Recommended.
Has an interesting method of teaching. Also has great prhase repretoir I.E 'The gods were knuckle heads' or 'second greatest idea of the human race-squash 'em like bugs.' TA can help you alot.
He is a great teacher, he gives very interesting lectures and easy tests. All that you really need to do is pay attention in class and you will do well. He offers great insight into an otherwise boring class
prof. from the movie UP. barry enjoys when people read newspapers in his class. a human encyclopedia of useless dates and knowledge, but impressive. handwriting looks like a person with down syndrome wrote it, but dont let it fool you as barry is the man. Barry ftw!
He's not my favorite professor ever, but the man can give some pretty passionate lectures. He really knows his stuff and I learned a lot from him. The grading system is odd and it makes it hard to get an A, but its pretty easy to still do well. There's no attendance, but the handouts he gives are about half of the material on the midterm and final.
Adorable old man who is really passionate about teaching history, even if he makes some of it up. Make sure you know the documents that he gives out and go to recitation for some clarity. His tests were very easy.
very knowledgable man. pretty easy class.... the only thing important is the hand outs esp if your given the essay topics for your midterm and final. hard to get an A but not hard to do well
Brilliant, brilliant man. He knows his Greek history like the back of his hand. He is extremely knowledgeable of a vast array of topics. The only problem with him is that he is very antisocial and can be rather condescending at times. I recommend him for anyone interested in history.
Great teacher, easy class, 4 quizzes with 4 questions each and 2 tests. You dont have to study if you go to class, and never have to use the textbook.
Great lecturer, but was better in 111. Looks kind of like the old guy from "Up." If you are in his recitation section, don't even bother buying the historical textbook unless you plan not to come to class. Just read and study the documents for the final.
Very, very interesting lectures, the guy has passion and knows what he is talking about. No homework, two easy, one-hour exams (midterm and final). Go to lecture and take notes, and you'll do fine. Exams are based almost entirely on lectures though - so make sure you don't skip! Highly recommended.
He teaches all his classes the same. One midterm and one final (during exam week). A few identifying passages from his handouts/books and an essay. Have fun with his handwriting his E's look like R's. But never mind that!
This guy is awesome. Very into what he teaches. Go to lecture-the content and especially handouts make up the exams. No homework, and virtually no workload. Recitation is mandatory. Easy course, very interesting at same time. Barry is fun to listen to. Highly recommend him, especially compared to some World Civ professors.
Ridiculous grading system, he only makes it possible to get 95% of the points which makes getting an A very hard. Obscure quotes from the handouts make up half of the midterm and final but if you can memorize them then half the test is an easy A. He goes very into depth on the classics and breezes over most other topics.
Well, Barry is an old fashioned teacher. No powerpoint, and I?m not sure if he knows how to use a computer. But, his lectures are very good, he is passionate about it and takes what could be boring and makes it interesting, and not a hard class to get a good grade in. There are no papers to write just pay attention and you'll do very well.
His rants are awesome. If he was a guru with his own religion it would be hard not to become a disciple.
I got an A and never went to lecture... TAs are everything. If you can, get Sarah Skelley as a TA - she is amazing! Midterm and final are easy if you study hard
Barry is the man! I had him for my honors seminar this year in world civ. He gives the best history lectures I have ever heard. He is a smart man.Basically no homework so going to recitation, the midterm, and the final make up your whole grade. If you take good notes in class and recitation and read over the documents a million times youll get an A
Extremely interesting professor who presents history different than anyone else. Go to lecture and recitation and the class isn't difficult at all. Grade is made up of a midterm and final, each with five quote questions and essay based on class readings and recitation discussions. Textbooks aren't necessary if you take notes.
You don't even need to buy the textbook for this class, but make sure you buy and use the book with all of the historical documents in it. Save every primary document he gives you in class because the tests are all based off of these documents. I got an A, and I hate history, so he's a super easy professor.
I love this man. He is a fantastic lecturer and his tests are very easy. He is like Mr. Fredrickson from UP, but better!
What a great professor! His lectures are interesting; he wears suspenders, looks like the guy from "Up," and says "hell" a lot. This makes for a hilarious and enjoyable time in his fairly easy class. I would recommend his UGC 111 class to anyone!
Lectures are pretty boring. Recitation is worth 25% of your grade, midterm is worth 25% and the final is 50%. If you study a lot for the final and midterm you can probably do fine in this class without going to any of the lectures. Definitely would recommend this class, but the fact that the midterm and final are heavily weighted is intimidating
He is pretty awesome, although you may fall asleep in his class. He will tell you how you don;t know enough about the world, but never mind that...you will understand latter ;)He has a midterm and a final, sometimes with quote identifications which can be difficult depending on how many handouts he passes out, and how many books he uses. The rest
His lectures are hard to follow and you can't pass the class without going but hopefully your TA will be able to straighten things out. Only 2 grades, midterm and final so STUDY.
His lectures are pretty boring most of the time, and he rambles about off topic things a lot. None of what we learned was on the tests, only what we learned in recitation. James Gawley was an awesome TA and helped me do okay in the class.
Hahaha you have to love Professor Barry. Honestly how well you do in the class depends on recitation, not lecture, but he picks good TAs and his lectures are interesting!
Barry is the man! His class is extremely easy. There is no need to go to lecture, except to collect handouts once in a while. His lectures are interesting. His TAs are amazing. His exams are easy, if you study the handouts. Take his class!!!
Super easy class, and entertaining too. Grade is based on two exams on analyzing quotes from handouts. That's it. Very nice guy. If you show up to class and listen when he's talking about a handout you'll do fine. Highly recommend him.
Barry is not a very good professor, and spends a lot of time telling students how dumb they are. His tests are to memorize quotes from the material you go over, and write an essay. Not if you actually learned material. it is alright but it can be very hard when they are vague quotes. Basically dont take any classes with Barry you'll be glad not to
I learned so much from this class and Dr. Barry. He is a walking database of information on Greek literature and culture. 1/3 of grade midterm, 2/3 final. The exams are not too tough if you attend class. He won't check, but you need to go. Good stuff! Also, he always encourages students to try other "classic" books, plays, etc. But never mind that!
Easy class, I did absolutely no work and studied maybe 4 hours for the midterm and final and got an A. There are 5 quote identifications and an essay on each test.
Very easy class, the TAs are highly important and they are all good. They each make up an essay question for the midterm and final but the quote identification are the same for everyone. Dont buy the textbook! just get the reilley reader which includes the historical sources needed for the identification part of the essay
He's an excellent professor (even though he goes on several tangents per lecture), but expects a bit much from his students when it comes to participating in class. 2 Exams: Midterm (33%) and Final (66%); grading is weird since its impossible to get higher than a 95 on his exams which makes getting an A harder. TAs helps out a lot during recitation
Barry is the Man! His handwriting is nearly illegible but he knows his stuff. Not necessary to attend every lecture, but definitely go to the recitation sections. Exams are easy, Part 1 is 5 quotes you have to say who wrote it and what it means, Part 2 is a essay. Midterm 33% of grade, Final 66%. Quizes in Recitation, easy with help from TA's.
Doesn't use powerpoints, only stands in front of the class and talks. He writes on the board but you can never see or tell what they say. Two tests which consist of identifying quotes from handouts given in class and an essay. Too hard for a 100-level gen-ed if you're looking for an easy world civ class look elsewhere
