BEST HISTORY TEACHER EVER!!
Made me actually want to go to class. Best teacher I've had yet
Best History Professor ever!
makes class fun
Passionate about what he does.
Knows his stuff. Great teacher
He was very entertaining. He's pretty silly in class too, but he makes sure you're learning the material. He does not tolerate sleeping or reading the DN in class and will call you out in front of everyone if you do. He expects you to know the material and grades accordingly, but an A is definitely attainable.
He was interesting, but the notes, reading and test all covered completely different materials from each other. I originally got a B- in the class, but it was just changed to an A. I'm not quite sure how that happened.
Passionate about what he teaches but expects students to know their material come test time
Good teacher, gives tons of notes and won't let students sleep in class.
History is Bunk!
He was great...just know your material and study for the online quizes!
Makes class fun. Not the easiest class but he is very helpfull if you go talk to him.
The class was super easy even though he makes you do tons of busy work. I suggest it for freshman but not so much for an upperclassman. He is simply a teacher on a trip, who feels that his class should be your most important. However, with very little studying an "A" is easily attained.
no homework realy, just quizes and tests and papers....o wait, maybe you do some word, but nothing to serious. i failed the final and still got an A. Just do what your told and you should do fine.
Military History Summer Pre-session was the most intimidating course ever. He gave a quiz every day about 20 written questions long and gave 5 minutes to do it. I dropped the class because it was impossible, and he was a **** about it.
Depends on his notes to lecture class, and will repeat the same point several times. To keep your attention he will try to speak in random dramatic outbursts but this just drained my interest in the topic. He'll tell you how to sit. The quizzes are very random and often reinforce his own narrow opinion. Writing papers is the only interesting t
The quizzes sometimes seem difficult howver you get two times to take them though he does change the questions sightly. No homework, just reading, and the tests and papers are easy if you learnto utilize your resources. Lectures are boring and pointless as all the material on quizzes/tests are covered in the text. Read, study, and you'll pass.
Great, entertaining professor with high expectations. Not a coasting course but it's not too difficult either. Just follow his guidelines and you'll be fine.
Best professor I have ever had. I actually wanted to go to class because his lectures were amazing! The class takes a little effort but is completely worth it!
more of a performance artist than a teacher. does performance without students being clear and does not ask if they understand, just moves on to the next section. too many tests and quizes.
He was not helpful at all. I emailed him to ask for additional help, and when I met with him he harped on the fact that in high school they do not teach us how to study properly. No help at all! I will say he is WAY into his lectures, but they are not relevant to the quizzes or tests. There is too much material to cover in the little amount of time
Although his lectures are entertaining he spends half of the class calling out students. Other students should not have to sit and listen to this, the grades of the students should reflect their interest and attention. Quizzes and tests are irrelevant to the lecture material.
His lectures were entertaining but were useless. The quizzes and tests were all taken from information in the book.
i took american history up to 1877. gotta study, but his lectures are interesting and keep me awake. I enjoyed going to class and he helped me develop a better studying style for the class. amazing teacher.
Does a great job with lectures. They are interesting and full of detail. However they didn't seem to relate to what the chapter readings were about which didn't help with the quizzes. But the lectures kind of related to the big exams. He's funny but a little arrogant. Had mixed opinions about him.
I kinda forget when classes where supossed to be about psycholgical warefare. Are tests about quizzes before or after the quizzes are due? Does it compromise the validity of a class to have some type of schedule or syllabus posted? Why should blatantly wrong answers need a "true"? Should a proffessor answer an 6+ e-mails or hold office hours?
I really like this professor. He's entertaining and doesn't make Amer History boring. But his tests are really hard, essay format. You need to make sure you know the concepts more than just the info. Books and lecture notes are used in tests too.
I have take both his American military History classes. The lectures are frankly amazing, and full of great information. Unfortunately, it doesn't apply to the quizzes, which are out of the book, and with which he is often intentionally confusing. His tests are brutal. If you can deal with the harsh quizzes and tests, he is by far worth taking.
He is an extraordinary professor and is also very handsome... Oh, and his tests are KILLER!
His lectures are very interesting, he really holds your attention. His tests and quizzes are very difficult and will require you to study. If you can get through the difficult tests, this class is definitely worth taking.
Don't waste your time going to his "theater performances." Sure he's animated, but your time is better spent combing through even the most minute details of the book. Quizzes r held wks BEFORE covering material in classes. Only a fraction of the material tested is ever discussed in class. Concerned more with his ego than teaching and/or learning.
His lecture had nothing to do with the class. He did not inform students what was on the tests or quizzes.
An excellent professor in class, as his lectures are entertaining and informative. The quizzes are multiple choice and moderately difficult. The exams are fill in the blank with one essay at the end, and these are considerably more difficult. The book is necessary for the information, he gives often unimportant yet interesting details on them.
Lectures are useless as all info is in the textbook. His quizzes and tests are often filled with frivolous information so make sure you read the fine print in books. Don't take this class with this lecturer if you can avoid it!
I'd be willing to go out on a limb and say the professor submitted his own comments on one of these (you decide which), cloaked as a student. Do NOT bother attending class, you will need the xtra time @home reading minute details for his ego trip come exam time. I've never thought so poorly of an educational experience or felt so set up to fail.
Quizzes are hard and given weeks before the material is covered. He's SO EGOTISTICAL its ridiculous. *The only class where I can get 99, 99, 98, 94 on the essay portion of the exam and still not pass. Take Scott Stempson!!!
He is by far the worst professor I have had. There's really no point in attending class because the weekly quizes and exams are ridiculous, make sure and remember all the minute details from the reading because those are pretty much the majority of the questions making it impossible to pass!!! I felt disgusted after his class, it hurt my GPA!
impossible to pass the class without studying for at least 2 hours EVERY night. his tests are ridiculous and hard and have nothing to do with his lectures. he will yell at you if you are texting (its college he has no control) and is very rude. how is he still teaching when the majority of his students fail?
Switched into this class from a Western Civilizations class, and first week, i thought it was great. His lectures are lively and interesting. The first quiz comes around...what the heck. None of this was included in his lecture. 2nd quiz, same thing. Make sure you read! Lectures dont matter for quizzes! But he takes attendance,so you have to go
Really is one of the most interesting class I've ever had. His class is very lively and funny. However, I can't say this is a easy class. It does require a lot of reading and review. He lets the students to design their own way of grading though, so that helped a little bit.
The lectures were very boring but I have to give him credit for trying to make some things funny. Tests were super difficult for me, though.
People are complaining about him but he is a really good teacher. The test and quizes are hard but you can take the quizes 3 times and its the same quiz each time so you can remember the answers you missed. Exams are hadr you can only take them once but gives 2 out and tkes best score.I slacked off and still learned a lot and got an A-
This class was simply an ACE requirement but I learned a lot. It wasnt too hard, and pretty basic. He let us pick how heavily we were to be graded on things which was great because I ended up not having to write a final paper. He did however go off on two different students on separate days for reading other books in his class.
Professor Berg is extremely passionate about what he teaches, which I find refreshing. His classes require a decent amount of reading, but he is more than willing to clarify anything you don't understand. He's easily one of the nicest professors at UNL. I absolutely recommend him.
At least he is interesting. His lectures have nothing to do with the test or quizes. This 3 credit class will keep you busy around the clock bc his exams are about unimportant minute details in the book. The exams are impossible to pass because some of his true or false questions are Personal Opinions! I suggest you never take a class with him!
He is a really energetic professor but doesn't teach well. If you take notes its pointless. Everything on quizzes and tests are in the book. The Quizzes and Tests are difficult because he wants specific useless information to be known about the topic rather than the importance of the event. Take Stempson, hes so much better.
Berg is a baller. Nuff said. I think he is an amazin/enthusiastic teacher and I find it hilarious that people are giving him bad reviews. I recommend his class. Sincerely, A truthful student.
Berg is an amazing professor! Students should be aware that most of the material for tests come from the book, not the lectures. However, his grading system was personalized, and the student has opportunities to take tests twice. Not that difficult.
He is entusiastic, a very skilled speaker, funny, and can teach you a lot. You do have to read a lot, but since you can retake the quizzes a couple times and the tests one time, his class is not too hard. No essays were required for WWII History (other than on the exams)! History major or not, it is a lot of fun to attend his classes!!
Wow way different tests this time. My tests ended up being 8-9 page essays written in a little over an hour. If you know the material great. But if you didn't read the book or go to lecture you're done. He's pretty funny but he gets mad easy. Short fuse on that one.
I absolutely loved this professor. I hope to take another class with him in the future. His quizzes are relatively easy and he's really easy to pay attention to. He's one of the only classes I enjoyed going to!
Did not reply to a single email until halfway through the semester after I had already failed a test since he is not clear about anything. I can honestly say it is single-handedly the most frustrating class I have taken because he is no help, whatsoever. Maybe by next semester he will get his act together.
This professor was very enthusiastic about the topics he covered, and was very knowledgeable as well. He does not respond to emails, so the best way to contact him is in person. His examinations are rather difficult, although his quizzes are not too terrible. Overall a decent professor.
Quizzes on trivia (names/dates) rather than concepts. No course schedule on syllabus, left 50 years of history out of the class. Yelled at student for taking notes "incorrectly," more angrily than at students who were texting. Overall a very bizarre instructor. Terribly disappointing. Like a HS JV coach who also teaches a course.
Most frustrating course I have taken at UNL. Least helpful professor I've had; never responded to one of my emails. Course did not even begin for weeks into the semester.
Thomas Berg is one of the most passionate educators I have ever had. While he may not be the easiest teacher, he is always willing to help clarify if you're an active participant in your education. I highly recommend any course with him.
Prof Berg was an amazing educator, I loved this class! He is very enthusiastic about the course, and his French accent was alway hilarious. The best way to contact him is in person, so do not waste time with an E-mail. Would recommend 10/10 and would love to take another class with him.
Berg is rude and arrogant, he yells at students for no reason, and needs to have authority. His tests are somewhat difficult, but the thing that really ruined the class was how rude he was to students who came every day, listened, and caused no issues. Interesting professor, but so rude.
One of my favorite professors so far. Over enthusiastic but in a good way, very interesting class with a great teacher.
He is very open to discussing what you don't understand either in lecture or during officer hours. He's very flexible with his time and a great laugh. He is very passionate about WWII and knows his stuff. I really thoroughly enjoyed taking his class and would do it all over again, even if there was a lot of work to do.
I went in for help and he was very condescending. The tests are over very minute and specific details so I hope you can memorize everything. His lectures online are usually pretty funny, but they are long. Take extensive notes. I didn't like him or his class.
Dont sleep or text or talk or look at your phone unless you want to be called out infront of everybody. He has no mercy for absences no matter circumstances he wont tell you what you missed. Show up take notes and its fine and give him the answer hes looking for or he tries to outsmart you
ONLINE: DO NOT TAKE HIM ONLINE. His syllabus wasn't updated, he didn't make any announcement until 2 weeks after class started so everyone was emailing each other from being so confused. I turned in a paper Sep 18, and he graded Oct 25. He goes 20 days without emailing and takes way too long to reply. Most confusing class ever.
He thinks he's funny which in turn is kind of funny. He expects you to do the work and to show up. He also wants you to pay attention but if you have a question, his office hours are 100x more helpful than emails.
Dr. Berg is an excellent lecturer. He makes jokes and is very engaging in class. This is not an easy A, you really have to work hard to do well. There is also a lot of reading for this class. If you are strategic and good at studying and time management, this class will be less difficult. Also his assignments have strict due dates and parameters.
Good lectures, just be ready to read.
Very passionate about the material. Probably my favorite lecturer Ive ever had. A lot of reading is required, and grading is mostly based on tests and quizzes. Used only lectures in class.
Makes class enjoyable. Allows students to dictate how successful they want to be. Can seem intense the first couple of classes but will soon turn into one of the best professors you will have on campus. As long as you communicate with him, he will do what he can to help you.
Berg is a cool guy. He makes class really interesting and fun. It's pretty lecture heavy but most of the tests and quizzes are based on the book. He lets you choose the percent of your grade thats for each part of class and the tests and quizzes were in the dlc and you could take them all more than once
Honestly, an amazing professor! His lectures make his class so much fun to go to! He will help you if you even put in half the work. He really cares about his students and if you talk to him one on one he is very understanding. I would take every class he offers because he helps you get the grade while making class interesting. Learned a lot!
Professor Berg is an old school hard instructor. He is unapproachable if you need to ask him questions as he comes off as arrogant and just an overall jerk. He does not reply to your emails and grades so tough that you will be lucky to even pass the course. I took a class from him my freshman year which was good but now he sucks. Avoid him.
Prof. Berg can be a tough guy to handle but has good intentions. DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE IN CLASS. He will call you out and its really awkward. He has passionate lectures but they only cover about half the material on the tests. I highly recommend doing the project. He goes pretty easy because he enjoys seeing people take interest in certain subjects
Passionate about history. You must read to pass the class.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. The tests are impossible to study for before taking your first attempt. You get two attempts per test but you won't know what the test is over till you've taken the first one. You can study for hours upon hours and still get an F on the test or quiz. The lectures do not cover the reading. BAD CLASS!
Me and two other of my friends are in this class and it is awful. We are all A and B grade students and I have an F one friend had a C and the other has a B+. This class is a GPA ruiner. I would avoid this professor at all costs. I put in many hours of work and still get screwed on the tests. Some tests you won't be able to view all the questions
Holy cow, I LOVE Berg! His lectures are so amazingly passionate about everything! His tests are all taken in the testing center, and they can kind of be hard, but he lets you take them more than once! He can be a tough grader on the short answer portion, but if you know what you're talking about, he gives you the grade you deserve!
Hard, but fair. I loved it, learned a lot
Guy never responds to emails and gets super far behind on grading, can take tests and quizzes multiple times and there the same thing. Easy class but you have to work for it
Dr. Berg, is a great teacher and his lectures are very entertaining to watch. In this class he talks about the battles, and is very passionate about the planes and tanks used in World War II. This class is very quiz and exam heavy and very diffficult. I say study the book "A War To Be Won" and watch the lectures online. Be prepared to live at DLC.
Berg is super passionate and is one of the smartest professors I've ever met. If you don't learn anything in this class, that's on you and if you feel that he's too mean or gives too much work, then you're simply just not hard-working enough. Best class and professor I've had in college so far.
Professor Berg is a fantastic lecturer who will not suffer any form of distraction in his classes. Berg will publicly call you out if you use your phone, not fun. Take notes, but I don't think its possible to get consistent A's unless you use sources from the book on exams. I enjoyed the class and his lecturer style, he has some fantastic accents.
I FREAKING LOVE Dr. Berg! He's sooooooo passionate and his lectures are so entertaining and educational! I've taken 3 of his classes (Military History- 303 & 304 and World War 2) and every single time he is my favorite professor!
Berg is a great professor. He is very passionate and knowledgable about the subjects he teaches. You don't necessarily have to read, but you will not get an A without reading. The course grade is based off 3 regular essay exams and one comprehensive essay exam. The comprehensive exam only hurts your grade if you get a C or lower.
Lectures are pretty boring, long and ineffective.
I took HIST111 as an online class and it was very difficult! The quizzes were about tiny little facts within a large chapter and were really confusing. The tests were a bit easier than the quizzes but still difficult. He also is a very nice guy but not very good at responding to emails. I would not take this as an online class!!
While an amazing lecturer, the weekly quizes at the DLC were way to hard - rarely did anyone get higher than a 50%. One thing he should change is the amount of reading that he requires, and in such a short time frame. I am going to Law school and I had to read more in his class than I did preparing for Law school. Overall an average techer
Very up-beat friendly person. energetic and gives very interesting lectures. Gives the opportunity for each quiz to be taken 3 times and each test twice.
Berg is one of the most interesting lecturers I've had in college. He makes them so interesting with accents and random facts you wouldn't expect. If you don't know the content well, the class will be very hard. But, he's willing to work with you if you put in the effort. Great guy overall.
Thomas was an amazing professor. You can really tell how much he cares about students. His lectures were always interesting. He takes the time to individually comment on everyone's paper.
Professor Berg has absolutely ridiculous expectations. He expected my class to read three books at the same time, while taking weekly quizzes over the most specific, unimportant details from these books. Hes a fine person but the class is incredibly difficult and Im not sure how people pass. The exams are even harder than the weekly quizzes.
In this class, you will have weekly quizzes for 20 points each in which you have multiple attempts. For each exam there will be two sections, short answer for 20 points and objective for 80, you will also get multiple attempts for these. Make sure to pay attention, no sleeping or goofing off or he will call you out in front of the entire class.
This class is still one of my favorites because of Dr. Berg. There are few assignments, weekly quizzes and a few tests. The formats of the quizzes and tests were appreciated due to the chronological history they followed. This professor showed he really cared about the students in his emails and was very easy to reach and get help from. Recommend!
Yes you have a lot of lectures but Dr Berg is fun to listen to
I took this class during the pandemic and he worked with what he had. If circumstances were different maybe I would have different feelings. Very project and quiz heavy. The quizzes added up to dissolve the final.
Very routine and has the same plan for every class. A slideshow lecture. He is a new professor in Minnesota and seems very unsure how to run a class. The only thing in the grade book is two 10 page exams that are NOT multiple choice and a 20 page essay. No study guides for exams. Makes it difficult to pass his class. Not personable either.
This teacher is very amazing and you will never be bored. He will teach you as an actor who presents history with fun and a never forgetful experience. I took his class over a decade ago and still remember one of his historical stories which involved dragging drunk people to the votes. He was one of my favorite teachers in college.
