Excellent professor... Weinschenk equivalent in Physics department! Teaches well, is entertaining, has generous office hours, is great at explaining concepts. You do have to work hard; it's not just putting numbers into your TI89 - it requires actual hard work, but he makes it doable and worthwhile. Take him!
He is nice, helpful, and a great lecturer, but his tests are extremely hard. It's not something you can do better by practicing. I don't recommend taking his course unless you're naturally good at physics or have already taken AP physics in high school.

I got a C- in Phys 141 and I hated it. I was not looking forward to 142. Bing has a degree in Physics Education so he knows how to teach it. He was exceptionally clear in his teachings and for the first time I actually understood physics. People complain his tests are hard but I found them to be fun/challenging rather than difficult. I got an A-.
Quality teacher
wonderful!
Dr. Bing is a very engaging lecturer, you will never be bored in class and will learn a lot. However his tests are really long and very difficult. Overall he is really hard but an excellent professor!
Perhaps the best professor you'll ever take.
Amazing professor. As long as you really understand the concept, which is VERY significant, you will be fine. For me, I can easily picture conceptual problems so the class wasn't difficult. You have to really enjoy physics to do well in his class, which he makes it fun and interesting. Plus, taking his class helps you with MCAT!
Had him for both 141 and 142, his way of teaching is extremely effective. His test are difficult but not impossible if you truly understand the physics. (some are also tricky) He is the most rigorous professor I have had at Emory thus far. Hes the kind of professor that makes paying tuition worth it, you should take him if you want to learn physic
Take him! I hated Physics before but now I have warmed up to it thanks to Dr. Bing! He's especially good if you are pre-med. He made studying for MCAT much easier since he's really good at making you understand the concept. There is webassign homework which are annoying but it keeps you stay on track, and not fall behind. His tests are tricky tho.
He will really make you learn physics, his test will be ok if you really know physics. Don't fall into the trap that you really know physics though.
Dr. Bing's 141/142 physics class will not be a breeze. Don't expect to get good grades if you don't have any intention of putting in effort. Dr. Bing is great at explaining difficult concepts and extremely helpful both during class and office hours. He has an incredible ability of remembering people's names by the 1st day of class too!
very helpful and clear teacher, although he does have an element of coldness about him
Best professor that I have had in an intro science class, and I am a senior. Never had physics before in my life and he made everything as clear as can be. The tests are difficult, and should be studied for substantially, but far from impossible (ie. Weinsch.). Bing is biggest concern is that students actually come to understand physics.
He is a very cold person. Even though he is a good lecturer, if you are easily intimidated by professors, I don't recommend him. His exams are out of 40 pts, which makes it difficult to get a good grade on. A simple mistake will cost you many pts.
Probably the worst professor I have ever taken at Emory. I am a physics major who had Bing last year. He is Just an intro-level professor who thinks too highly of himself. If you ask him hard-concept questions beyond the intro pays class, u would know that he is not that intelligent guy
Bing is the man. Easily the best lecturer I have had in college. Not a particularly hard class, but you will learn a lot.
Bing is the man. It's rare for a Physics department to have someone who is this good of a teacher. Not an incredibly hard class if you go and pay attention, but one of the most worthwhile classes I've taken in college. Inspired me to pick up a Physics minor.
Bing is a great teacher. He provides so many office hours. Really utilize those. His tests are difficult, but do-able. Focus on the concepts. Take good notes. Do the enrichment sets!
Very good at explaining concepts, but his tests are insanely difficult. Be careful, the material in class seems simple, but the tests do not reflect that easiness level. Study hard, and you will be alright. I learned quite a bit from his class.
Dr. Bing is overrated, (nonetheless he is a good professor) his exams were hard because it doesn't reflect the easiness of his lectures. You have to dedicate ample amount of time to his class in order to do well. If you don't have to take this class don't take it.
His tests only seem hard because he doesn't actually teach anything in lecture. I came away from the class with almost nothing learned.
Bing helped you grasp concepts really well. His tests were somewhat challenging but if you reviewed everything, it was totally possible to make an A.
Bing is an AMAZING professor! He explains concepts really well since he has a PhD in teaching and physics. The tests are not too difficult if you attend class, take good notes, and understand the homework/enrichment sets. If you're premed, you'll learn physics the best from Bing! He's also really helpful in office hours.
He's one of those lecturers who really knows how to teach. Tests are not easy but very fair. He tries to make every class interesting by doing these demos! Very clear with lecture and helpful during office hours. If you aren't a science person, his intro physics is a great option to fulfill the science requirement!
Probably one of the best lecturers I've had so far- very clear explanations so do NOT skip class. Focus on CONCEPTS and not individual examples as as he will never recycle a question (although extra practice probs of course can never hurt). His WebAssign probs are good practice for his exams.
Bing is an amazing professor. His lectures are rarely dull, and are always helpful. He makes classes interesting by physically showing you what is going on. He tries to guide you by showing you what to know for exams, but be careful his exams are kind of tough. To do well will require some work but professor Bing will be there to help you.
Dr. Bing is a great guy who teaches a well-organized Physics 141 class. Webassigns and tests are tough and annoying, but Dr. Bing is great at office hours. Send him an email if you have trouble, and you'll probably get a decent response. You don't really need the textbook.
Thomas Bing really gives fantastic lecture. I find Physics to be interesting and clear though I am not a science person. He will test on what he teaches.
Bing is a FANTASTIC teacher. AND his tests are fair so that you really only need to read the book and go through the book problems (and all the assignments he gives you through BB) to get an A in the class. Going to class obviously helps a lot, though since he is the best science prof I've had at Emory. C'mon, he has a PhD in Physics Education.
His webassigns are annoying as hell but Yahoo Answers is very helpful. You will have to work for an A, but it is VERY doable. Lectures are crystal clear and also slow because he explains EVERYTHING (i.e. 2+24). However his exams are kind of a jump up from his lectures, so be prepared to study. Dorkiest prof ever.
Bing is the best lecturer I've had at Emory. The webassigns are a pain, but they are essential to understanding the material. His exams aren't easy, but they are extremely fair. The keys to passing are reviewing lecture notes, re-doing the webassigns, and doing the enrichment sets. He is also extremely helpful in office hours, so make sure to go.
Dr Bing is a really good lecturer, and a very smart man. The only warning I would give is that some test questions are somewhat pointless so you don't really expect them unless you study a ton. Basically the tests are harder than the rest of the class, but if you study well you should be alright.
Dr. Bing is a phenomenal Physics lecturer. Hands down, like most have said, he communicates physics clearly and exceptionally. His tests aren't math-heavy, but they do stress a fundamental understanding of basic physics concepts. WebAssign will become a daily part of your routine, and he often uses similar problems for exam questions.
Professor Bing pretty much writes your notes for you - just attend class and copy down everything he writes! Webassigns can be frustrating sometimes, but if you don't look up the answers, you'll be well-prepared long before midterms and final. Tests are very conception, but re-reading notes/re-doing problems would be sufficient preparation.
Best lecturer I've ever had.
Bing's lectures are great. He's very enthusiastic and explains concepts very very clearly. His tests are not difficult at all if you understand the concepts and know how to apply them. Not skipping class is pretty important, as the book is a poor resource for trying to understand concepts that Bing explains well.
Best professor I've ever had and very clear.
BEST LECTURER EVER. Basically go to class and you will learn everything. May need the textbook to solidify concepts (which are definitely tested on exams).
If you attend class, do all the Webassign homework, do all the practice he gives you, and go to his office hours or email him for help you may need, you will most likely not only get an A, but you will really enjoy learning physics. Dr. Bing is hands-down the best physics professor I have had. This man knows how to teach.
Took him over the summer (HIGHLY recommend), although class pace is fast, he does a great job explaining the concepts way better than the textbook. Redoing WebAssign problems, going over class notes, doing the enrichment sets + practice exams will prepare you very well for the exams. Your WebAssign grade is also a huge boost to your overall grade!
Dr Bing is one of the greatest professors here at Emory. He got a doctorate in educational physics, and he works really hard so that all students understand the concepts. To succeed in his class you should complete your web assign homework, take the practice exams, and do the enrichment sets. Physics lab with Donofrio is straight forward as well.
Took him both PHYS141/142 during the summer and came in thinking I would definitely fail since I hated high school physics. But his lectures are very straightforward and he is so extremely helpful and patient in office hours too. If you do all the work, you will do well. Definitely my favorite professor at Emory so far!
Dr. Bing is probably one of the greatest professors I have had. I have always hated physics and felt like it was a subject that I would never succeed at. Dr. Bing's lectures are interesting and he is very clear about what you need to know. He explains concepts excellently. Make sure to do your webassign and practice problems in the book!!!
Hes the best that Emory has to offer, but the physics at Emory will still be challenging no matter who you take. His lectures are clear-cut and engaging, but definitely oversimplified in comparison to HW and tests. If physics doesnt come naturally to you, and you want to make sure youll get an A, youre better off taking it at your state school.
Dr. Bing is easily the best physics professor at Emory. His lectures are interesting, and he explains concepts in an extremely clear and concise manner. Although exams can be challenging and require a deep conceptual understanding of the material, his WebAssign questions really help you reach that level of expertise. So glad I signed up for him!
You can tell this guy thinks physics is the coolest thing in the world, and it'll make you think physics is pretty cool too. Best lecturer I've had. Went into the final with an A and come out of class with a B+ so watch out for it lol.
Dr. Bing makes every lecture clear and interesting. I never enjoyed physics in the past but am excited to attend his classes, which sometimes include cool demos. Tests are based on understanding, not memorization but he is super accessible and helpful if you need extra help with a concept. Overall great professor, highly recommend.
Dr. Bing's lectures are so worth staying over the summer for! I had no prior experience with physics in high school, and he really taught from scratch. Both 141 and 142 were made so interesting, and I feel like I learned more in the past 12 weeks than I have in any semester of classes.
Taking physics over the summer was definitely worth it to have prof Bing. He is very nice, makes physics interesting, and available everyday for office hours. Definitely try on the webassign, summer is fast paced and lecture heavy. Be prepared for the short essay and 4 5 pt multiple choice questions on the exams. I got a B- in 141 and a B+ in 142.
Took Dr. Bing over the summer and just don't skip class, do the enrichment set, and re-do the webassign and I think you would get a really solid grade
Dr. Bing is seriously one of Emorys best professors. If you struggled with physics in high school, his class is a game-changer. He makes the subject incredibly interesting and completely worth learning. Do enrichment sets, push to understand the topics in depth even if they are hard. It seems that his exams actually require critical thinking
Dr. Bing crafts his lectures so that students of all backgrounds can understand the concepts. He uses the math sparingly, but effectively, and explains any math concepts that may be new to students. He's super responsive to emails and always appears enthusiastic to help. His tests are fair and of moderate difficulty.
Great lecturer. He does a really good job of explaining difficult physics concepts in easy to understand terms. Lots of opportunities for extra help in the class.
I took PHYS151 with no prior knowledge of physics and it was really really hard. However, I think that Professor Bing was a really good lecturer, he engaged us and helped me understand everything in lecture. I think that physics is really hard without prior experience and I struggled with exam questions. The textbook also didn't help that much.
We had at least 2 hours of mandatory HW a night, and that didn't even include studying. Exams were extremely difficult because he doesn't teach everything you need to know. You need to take what he taught you and apply it to concepts you haven't seen. Also the class itself is so fast-paced it's very easy to fall behind. Overall I do not recommend
Dr. Bing is phenomenal, but beware, this class (IMO) is much harder than 151. Nevertheless, lectures were beautifully paced and I never felt that he was testing us on concepts not covered in lecture. Be patient on the homework problems and be sure to attend office hours if you need help.
I took this class over the summer, so it was a little tough. You definitely have to make sure you really understand the material to do well on the exams. I thought Dr. Bing was an amazing lecturer, and he really cared about the students' learning in the course.
Bing was great in PHYS 151 too, but it was in PHYS 152 where he really shined. The content in 152 is undeniably more difficult, but Bing can explain abstract, complex concepts as simply as possible so you understand. His exams are tough but fair, and test understanding over recall. Highly recommend for both PHYS 151/2 and 141/2.
I loved Dr Bing SO MUCH. He has amazingly clear lectures that make me enjoy physics even after hating it in high school. I cannot recommend him enough. He also is just so adorable and features nerdy references and cameos from his son in his prerecorded lectures. There is a lot of homework, but it's pretty straight forward if you watch the lectures.
The lectures were very clear and simple but did not really translate to how difficult the homework and exams are. You have to have a really good understanding of the material. Lectures were asynchronous during the pandemic and he had office hours every day. The final exam and lab exam are really difficult and will prob bring your grade down.
Dr. Bing was a fantastic teacher! I had never taken physics before, but he made sure to simplify each topic. His lectures were very well thought out and he always had great examples. I would recommend going to his office hours and emailing him whenever you need help because he is great at that! He is one of my favorite teachers at Emory by far.
Dr. Bing is a very good teacher. He is wildly available for office hours (If I remember well, he had office hours every weekday). Despite that, I feel like this class was hard and heavy (a lot of concepts to learn). Also, I wasn't a fan of the exam structures. Overall, this was a fairly stressful class with the online format making it worse.
Dr. Bing is able to break complex physics topic down and make them very easily understandable. He's funny and very accessible outside of class, including to discuss how to study for this course. The homework and exams are very difficult, and you must be ready to put in a lot of time practicing and thinking concepts through to do well in this class.
I took Dr. Bing for Summer session and while it was super fast paced he made sure that we got in all of the same information we needed to know. He also readily responds to emails and had office hours every weekday. It was refreshing to have a professor who cared both about his students' wellbeing and how they learned the material. Highly recommend!
Dr. Bing was an amazing professor! I was super nervous to take physics but he broke down concepts really well and encouraged us to reach out if we ever needed help. He is super understanding of our situations and I really enjoyed his asynchronous material and seeing him synchronously. Highly recommend if you're trying to knock out physics!
The best professor I have ever head. Incredibly kind and always willing to help if you ask for it.
Prof. Bing is one of the best lecturers I've had. He is very clear and delivers information very coherently and at a level that everyone can understand. Sometimes lectures can be slow, but you can always just speed up the recording outside of class. Tests are not easy and are a large portion of your grade, but not too much of an issue.
Great prof. physics is hard, but bing made it bearable.
Dr. Bing is a really great physics professor! Really passionate about teaching, and makes the lectures as interesting as a physics class can be. If you've taken AP Physics 1 or something similar then this class is pretty similar. Definitely recommend!
Dr. Bing is absolutely amazing! I've always been so intimidated by the core sciences, and I did really badly on my first exam. The class was undoubtedly difficult. But the way Dr. Bing broke down the material and helped us outside of class was simply unmatched. He's so funny, and made an 8:30 AM so engaging. He's a just a really good person.
I really liked how Dr. Bing posted worked solutions to HW and challenge problems. He responds promptly to emails. I never thought any test questions were inappropriately difficult based on how much the relevant concept was discussed. I found the HW to be actually harder than the tests. Go to OH or read the text, and an A is not out of reach.
Dr. Bing is exceptional. He posts guided answer keys to the homework, past exams, and other practice material that shows you exactly how to do each question. The course content is difficult, but he is very clear and helpful in his office hours and he responds promptly to all emails. He's one of my all-time favorite professors.
I took Dr. Bing's course over summer and I have to say for an advanced course to have to be condensed in 6 weeks, he did an excellent job. Engaging and helpful lectures. I will say the grading is a little tough, with around 70% of your grade being exams, so it will be work. but if you put in the work and enjoy the subject, its an amazing class.
Best professor I've had.
Dr. Bing is an excellent professor. However, you will have to work hard to get a good grade in his class. This is not an easy A. He answers questions very well, he explains things very well, and he makes difficult topics make sense. There is plenty of homework, so you'll have a lot of chances to practice the material.
I am shocked at the positive reviews about Bing. As a lecturer and professor, he's ok. The issue is his lectures are at a basic level in comparison to his tests. The tests aren't scored out of many points and are basically your entire grade. There isn't much practice either. It is the hardest class I've ever taken. Good luck.
I'm not a physics person, but Dr. Bing was a very clear lecturer. The course is super organized, lectures are recorded so you can go back and re-watch them. Two homework assignments per week. Exams were fair: a mixture of long-answer, graphing, essay, and MC. You might not love the material but Dr. Bing will get you through it!
Let's be real: Physics is just hard. Bing does a wonderful job at breaking down topics and teaches at a manageable pace. Very enthusiastic and extremely accessible for questions / office hours. I hate Physics but Bing makes it more bearable. Tests can be tough.
Dr. Bing is such a good lecturer and always explains concepts very clearly. He's super accessible by email and office hours and is very willing to help! One of the best professors I've had.
Bing is really good at explaining difficult content, so go to office hours for questions. PHYS141 is straightforward and emphasis is on concepts so do all your homework, enrichment sets, and make use of the conceptual questions in the textbook. The exams are fair and he gives plenty of time, but they aren't easy. Think deeply in this class.
Dr. Bing is an excellent lecturer, he makes concepts so easy to understand. I wouldn't say his tests are easy, but they aren't too difficult. Many test questions were easier than what we had done for homework, and it was possible to get 100% on the tests as long as you understood the concepts.
Dr. Bing's lectures are simple, understandable, and recorded. The homework is very challenging compared to the lecture content and the exams. My advice: Attend/watch the lectures, do his enrichment sets and practice exams, and understand the concepts. The exams are not easy but also not extremely hard.
Dr. Bing is an amazing lecturer who really breaks things down to the fundamentals and makes things simple. He is a bit awkward/cold when you approach him one-on-one during office hours/after class which contrasts his lecture style but it's fine I guess. The exams are out of really little points each which makes it easy for your grade to get knocked
He gives good lectures and records them (which is great if you're in the 8:30). Class is mostly based on your tests so it can be difficult to pull up your grade, but he gives good partial credit and is really accomodating. If you've taken physics before you should be okay, but you definitely need to study for this class and do the homework.
Great at explaining novel concepts. Physics is gonna be tough regardless, but Dr. Bing's class was 100% worthwhile.
Dr. Bing is an amazing lecturer. He explains concepts really well, clearly structures his lectures, and engages students using demonstrations. One of the best professors I have ever had. I can't recommend him enough. The tests are difficult but fair as concepts are really emphasized over textbook problem style questions.
I wish I could give him a 6. Dr. Bing is one of the best professors I've had at Emory. His lectures were very organized and engaging, and you could tell he was very enthusiastic and passionate about physics. His exams were very fair and he was very rewarding with partial credit as well. Highly highly recommend!
Dr. Bing was an amazing lecturer who is incredibly kind towards his students. He's very passionate about his teaching and what stood out to me was that he memorized everyone's name and face before the first day of class. It was very enjoyable taking his class and I recommend it to everyone to take as well.
Physics GOAT. Bing teaching a physics class is like Michael Jordan in a game 7 of the finals.
He was a good prof. Class is hard. Mostly depends upon the exams.
It was clear that Dr. Bing had been in this game for a long while. His lectures were timed to perfection almost every time. Majestic. Dr. Bing also had a good way of making something difficult and complex simple and straightforward. As someone who had previously seen this material, I greatly benefited from Dr. Bing's course.
Dr. Bing is the best! He's super organized and very clear about his expectations. His lectures are all you need for the exams, and there's only one relatively short homework per week. He replies to emails quickly and really wants his students to learn and succeed.
Dr. Bing is a brilliant Physics teacher. If given the opportunity to take one of his classes, take it. He is great at explaining complex topics and articulating them to the class. He also knows every student's name in a huge lecture. Very impressive.
Dr. Bing is a great guy, but if you're someone new to physics and just need to take 1 class for another major, I wouldn't recommend him. Lectures are oversimplified compared to homework and the extremely difficult exams that are only out of 40 points and have MCQ. This class requires a significant time commitment, hours every day at least.
Dr. Bing is an amazing professor! His lectures and demonstrations are very fun and the class is extremely organized. He has very many office hours, so I was able to go to many of them and clear up my confusion. Some of the exam questions are difficult compared to the examples in class but they are very fair and apply concepts we have learned.
Would highly recc not taking this class unless it's required. Bing does a decent enough job teaching the physics concepts but barely teaches the calculus applications of them which makes the course really tough when the exams are all just calculus applications of the physics concepts. Plus, the lab portion is just awful and brings your grade down.
Best intro to physics professor ever. This class is hard but if you find a rhythm it is super manageable. To pre med students--it is definitely harder to get an A in this class than 141.
Bing is one of the best physics professors at Emory. He makes his lectures easy to understand, it is well organized and he understands his material well. He is quick to help students and answers questions clearly without confusion. His tests reflect what he teaches in class. Pay attention and study, and you should be fine. Lab's a bit tedious tho
Dr. Bing is a great professor and really breaks the material down into its most basic parts, making it easier to understand than most professors would do. He is very accessible outside of class and replied to emails quickly. However, the lecture material is simply difficult, especially if you have not taken at least a few physics courses prior.
Great & well-organized lectures! Reccomend him over the summer! He emphasizes understanding concepts over sheer memorization. (Know WHY AND WHEN to apply a formula) Pay attention in lecture & do office hours/HW/practice exams to do well. End grade is very dependent on exams. FYI HW is harder than exams so know how to do the HW and exams will be ok.
Professor Bing knows his physics and if you want to build a solid foundation in physics he's your man. If you just want to pass physics for your pre-health requirement he is also your man. Either way, his lectures are genuinely super clear and articulate and he posts all of them. As long as you take him and physics seriously, you'll do great!!
GOAT Status
While PHYS 141 has been the hardest class I have taken in undergrad so far (harder than CHEM 203), and I don't know my grade yet, Dr. Bing is very caring, helpful, and genuinely interested in the success of his students. Physics is hard but go to Office Hours, work the Enrichment Sets, ask your friends questions, and keep pushing through.
Absolute legend. Dr. Bing explains all concepts in a clear and concise way. Attendance is optional, and he records every lecture. Though the material is difficult, he makes the class as accessible and manageable as possible. He is the GOAT.
LOVED Dr. Bing. His lectures are super clear and genuinely fun to listen to. Tests are not that bad and I feel like I genuinely learned a lot of physics in the class. Take him if you can!
Dr. Bing's lectures are engaging, clear, and concise, but HW requires you to apply basic concepts in different scenarios. HW is harder than midterms, though, so if you take his class seriously and understand the why behind every step, midterms will be fine. Final's harder than midterms, but you'll be fine if midterms and lab exam went well.
This is the hardest class I've taken at Emory so far, but it is definitely doable. Dr. Bing is a great lecturer but sometimes can drag a point on for too long. The homeworks are much harder than what he teaches in lecture, but to prepare for exams, I recommend truly understanding how to do each homework question and to practice as much as you can.
Tom Bing is the GOAT. He is incredible at teaching. His Ph.D is in how people learn physics so he is great at explaining things in a way that is easy to understand. He is super nice and easily accessible through email and office hours.. I hated physics due to a high school teacher but he made it fun and interesting.
Tom Bing makes physics interesting, even for people that came into it not really liking physics. He is great at helping students understand the concepts behind why the math works, as well as explaining the math itself. Would highly recommend this class.
Dr. Bing is an excellent professor who makes complex physics concepts accessible. Attend lectures, do practice problems, and utilize resources like Unstuck ai - you'll do well in this challenging but rewarding class.
Amazing lecturer and explains concepts very clearly. Class graded by few things and exams make most of you grade with no drops or curve so little to no room for error. Exams are very fair and gives lots of partial credit even though he tries to challenge you. Best option for physics.
Great professor and amazing teacher. But do not be fooled by the immense amount of 3s and 2s on difficulty. He truly is a 5/5 professor, but the class itself is very difficult at least 4/5 lowest difficulty rating. Grt ready to work and understand every concept. Talk to him about any questions as he is very helpful.
In general, my physics experience at Emory has been amazing — Professor Bing is no exception. Professor Bing prioritizes students' understanding of concepts, no matter how difficult they might be to grasp (QM is notorious for this). Prepare to get a B+, as that is the average grade students end up with at the end of the semester
Dr. Bing is a fantastic professor who tries his hardest to ensure his students understand the class. Although PHYS253 is a difficult class, Bing makes lectures very engaging and is incredibly patient with student questions. Absolutely would recommend taking his class.
Dr. Bing is an incredible professor - engaging lectures, accessible outside of class, and cares about students' understanding of the material. Homework is well designed, reinforces topics covered in class, and prepares you well for tests. Dr. Bing's posted notes are truly worth their weight in gold: clear, concise, and never lacking.
