Very approachable and makes the subject of Botany somewhat interesting!
a very funny and friendly prof who does his best to make sure you understand what he is trying to teach you.
amazing prof. very understanding, helpful and caring. his lectures and clear and he is an amusing guy.
such a nice man..good class to take to fufill science requirement if you hate science
Very enjoyable class and does a good job explaining the material. The moments of madness are great.
Awesome prof he helps out as best as he can and explains things in detail for the most part. Not only is he a good prof, he makes it fun as well!!
Excellent. Great stories to contrast the lectures. Nice to see the answers posted outside right after the tests.
Great guy. His stories are pretty goofy but he knows he's goofy so it's a great class. Simple tests, answers posted right away a great prof and a great class!!
Booth cracks me up, he's so warped...he can sure drive his point home...great guy.
This prof. is great. Easy to talk to. He sure does have his own method of teaching, however it helps to use the text as backup.Never bored here, again great stories.
Boring class. His teaching is confusing! he doesnt follow the text and his labs are not well-organised.Nice guy though.
The sweetest guy ever! A great prof who is always willng and able to help you out. Tests are easy and answers posted right away. A real sweetheart! I highly recommend him!
Super nice. Likes to go off on tangents constantly about unrelated matter. Repeats himslef so many times that you don't need to study. Super easy exams, it's like grade 12 bio all over again. I got an 'A' and spent most of the classes in Wise Guys. If you want a slacker class go for him.
Well, I learned absolutely nothing from this guy ... oh well, he's really funny! And who put down that he's hot? :)
I just need a science to graduate. He's funny, but he is really cranky. Rude to students. Hard to ask questions. Lessons are beyond confussing, READ TEXT
well, exam was easy...lectures are hard to follow sometimes, read the text and you'll be good!
exams were super easy!~ lectures on the other hand are very hard to follow, he likes to jump from topic to topic not following any specific order... but if you read the the text you'll do fine
interesting guy, shows a great amount of interest in subject matter, fair marker, has some good stories
Eewwwww!! Who said this guy was hot?? Is obviously a brilliant scientist, but NOT a good, or even adequate teacher....taking notes from his lectures is impossible!!!-aaand are all of his stories reeeaally true??!
The prof. has a sense of humor, but that is not enough. His teaching style is all over the place and he appears to be disorganized. Take it with someone else, or drop it if you can. There are many other ways to get your science credit if you want to learn something. Don't pay good money to learn nothing!
He is not at all helpfuly with clarifying questions regarding what topics to study for exams, and gives poor unstructured notes (if any)
During lectures, he is the most confusing prof ever, but he gives u outlines of the topics he is covering in class from the txtbook. study that, and you'll ace the exam! dont try to study the lec notes tho, hes all over the plc n is hrd to follow
He grows on you. At first I had know idea what he was talking about, but you begin to see that he has put everything into a context and repeated the material so many times and in so many different ways that all of a sudden you get it. Tis madness, but still there is method in it.
His lectures were all over the place; but he tried. he gives u an outline of the chapters so use that, read the text book, STUDY it, and you will do fine on the exams. Be patient; hes not the best at teaching however he is a fair marker and examinor.
EASIEST TESTS EVER!!!
"ad-VANCE, retreat... ad-VANCE, retreat..." Not the clearest or most structured prof around, but interesting and quite funny in his own way. Tests you only on material in class, but textbook is extremely helpful for bringing it all together.
easy exams; pretty obvious what the answers are. reminds me of a repeat of grade 12 biology. read the textbook though. really loves the subject and the topics; ask him anything he'll be sure to give you lots of information.
he definitely knows what's he's teaching and tries to make it comprehensible for any person
At first he was confusing and all over the place but eventaully you see the order to his notes. New at powerpoint but lectures are interesting. He's pretty funny in an odd sort of way. He's also always there to answer questions and help students out. Pleasantly surprised with him
He's awesome.
I liked him. His lectures are a little confusing, but as long as you use the text book it all makes sense. He wants you to do well and come out of the class appreciating biology as much as he does. Funny and personable.
He was a fun professor! His lectures didnt make sense, only when you read the texzt book everything made sense. ____His___Tests___I___Hate
I <3 Tom !!!
He's such a nice guy! He really does wants you to do well! His lectures can be a little confusing but if you read the text then you'll do good. Tom loves biology, and you can tell by the way he talks. I kinda hate science but he made it fun with all of his enthusiasm. Haha I love Tom. =D
Goes through material at a really easy pace, and always has really funny stories to tell
beware of all the good reviews. material is interesting and *in theory* should be easy, but his tests are terrible. words things poorly and YOU lose marks because of his confusing english. should have got an A+ in this class, but lost marks because of technicalities only... very frustrating but at least his lectures were fun.
All round hes a great guy. Very approachable, helpful and overall clear. However, his class may get boring, but he tries his best to keep student interest up. Only problem, his testing format is terrible. The way his tests are written make the test so much more confusing/harder than they really are largely because, you just can't read it!
Bad Prof, lecture notes are very unclear, hard to follow, and confusing, he rambles on way to much making it very difficult to even follow what he is saying, the textbook is the only way to learn information.
His lectures are almost impossible to follow, all his notes have are google pictures and questions that he doesnt answer. I thought i was going to enjoy this "BIO" class but all he has tried to teach yet is alot of chemisrty and cell bio, not at all what i expected and i think i will be unable to pass this course, just because of the prof
bad bad bad bad prof. If you take this course with him, you can consider your GPA dropped if you even pass, he makes no sense at all. It's basically a chemistry course, and all he does is ramble and ramble about nothing. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HIM, TERRIBLE PROF.
super nice prof, really funny. His powerpoints are very confusing, jumps from one chapter to the next then back, but if you follow along with the textbook you'll have no problem understanding the concept. :)
He talks about his life stories as much as he does bio, he's a funny guy though. I learned everything from the textbook, going to class isn't completely necessary.
Really easy class!! he's such a nice prof. I hardly went to class and just studied from the posted slides and txtbook and got 93% on my final!!
Best Prof ever. Extremely easy and only wants you to get something out of the class so he tests on the basics. Take advanced level courses with him they are very easy and interesting.
Really nice guy, easy class. Attended reviews to take down textbook sections once I realised the lectures weren't necessary. Two exams worth 50% each when I took the course, but they're a cake walk if you read the book. If I needed bio courses for my degree, I would look for him!
Funny guy. Horrible exams. I did get an A but you have to combine your textbook and notes for it. Know DNA for the final. This class should be a GPA booster but not for most people it wasn't.
Very nice man, funny and quirky, but very difficult to listen to in lectures. If you read the textbook and use his slides, going to class is relatively pointless because he doesn't talk much about the material, instead tells stories. Easy prof, good class to take for an A.
First of all, he's funny and a bit sarcastic when he tells stories! Class was fun and can be boring sometimes! The book is highly essential! Mid-term was ok and so is the final exam! You just have to rely on the book for you to understand everything clearly because Prof Booth can be unclear at times! Overall it was an ok class!
Best prof in Biology. Won't move from a topic unless the whole class understands it. Attend class and you're golden. Exams are easy. His getting to the point where he's too old to be a jerk prof wants everyone to get good marks, hence his nickname "Soft Tom". Take higher level classes with if you can. Stories and random stuff he says is priceless
Very slow at teaching. Class had to get done 15 chapters and we got done 6. Notes are all over the place and hard to follow. Textbook is a must in this class. His exam setups are the most confusing i have ever seen.
He was my favourite! As long as you have the textbook it will all make sense. He makes class interesting with his humour.
Very good professor, definitely need the text book. Must attend class, very laid back style of teaching. It is easy to learn the material and do well on the course.
One of the best professors I had! He is awesome! He really cares about his students and wants everyone to do well. He is very helpful. I wish he taught more courses. I would recommend him to anyone taking science courses.
Booth is a nice enough guy but he's not that good of a prof. His lecture slides consist mainly of pictures so if you happen to miss something he says you're a bit screwed. The textbook is also a picture book so you can't consult that for if you miss something. Luckily, his exams are easy.
Nothing but praise for Boothe. He may come off a bit scatter-brained, but the material all connects and makes sense in the end. He is more focused on sparking an interest in Fungi and giving you general knowledge on them rather than getting you to memorize a load of info. I think I wrote down just as many life quotes as biology quotes.
One of the best profs you will ever have. His views on education are wonderful and has such a bright mind. Quite a refreshing class. He will make you laugh. And as long as you make your own notes which doesn't take much effort. You'll get an A.
Tom is the best! I took the class to fill requirements for a 3000 level Biology course. I had 0 interest in fungi at the beginning, now I'm obsessed. Anyone in the biol sciences owes it to themselves to take Fungi and Friends. The lectures are riddled with hilarious stories that lend to many "oh Tom..." moments that make going to class a must!
Lectures are unclear and not easy to follow he jumps around and misses points. He does not label his slides so you will have no idea what he is talking about. Or he will leave a slide on for 40 minutes and ramble about anything other than what is on the slide. His exams are easy but formatted terribly. If you have no prior bio knowledge youll fail.
Funny guy, although lectures are long and it gets a bit boring. Provides notes on powerpoint via desire2learn, but they tend to be a little disorganized and somewhat hard to follow. So I suggest using the textbook to help you when you study. Midterm and final exam weren't too difficult. Overall a pretty good prof. :)
Oh, Tom. Hilarious. Charming. Helpful. Terribly disorganized (but he knows that.) He will emphasize what's important until the cows come home and you will sit down to your exam and just know it. His slides are terrible, his tests are awkward but oddly easy. Some people think he's boring, but he has great stories, & You will know your stuff.
He only has a midterm and final both worth 50% of your final so if you haven't taken science classes in high school like I didn't then be prepared to study hard. He expects his students have a base knowledge and he gives his lectures like they're a recap on HS courses-assumes everyone knows what hes talking about because they took bio in the past.
awful organization but he does try to emphasis important material. hope you can write really fast cause his slides don't help and you just gotta write down what he says. funny guy. took some getting used to to his teaching style but eventually its not so bad. thank goodness for the synopses he made for the class. exam was pretty easy.
Ah Dr. Booth. He is actually a really nice guy although sometimes his dark sarcasm can throw you off when you come to see him. But really, hes pretty cool. Like everyone, he is DEF scattered and a bit disorganized. But he does mention everything over and over for those tests, and the tests are all straightforward and easy.
Excellent prof in the Biological Sciences.
Great prof, although you should review the material every day after class
Excellent professor, first midterm very easy, after that the second midterm and final much more memorization, and quite tougher. Overall was clear in what was expected to be learnt, as well as genuinely helped individual students. Master of fungi!
He is such an adorable prof and amusing to listen to. His notes are a bit all over the place but he will let you know exactly what to know for the exams. Make sure you come to every class as a lot of the notes on the powerpoint slides are all pictures. He is really sweet and cares a lot about his students.
He is one of my favourite profs I've had so far just so adorable and hilarious, he really cares about his students and will emphasize a lot about what's important to know for the exams. Notes are a bit disorganized so class attendance is mandatory. Exams are a bit awkwardly made but not difficult. I never thought i'd be that interested in mushrooms
All time favourite prof! He cares so much about his students, and is so passionate about what he teaches. I wish he taught more classes! HIGHLY recommend taking this class with him, he is hilarious and very amusing. Class attendance is mandatory as there is a lot of note taking that is not on the slides.
Great prof and even better when you get to know him. Refreshing to have some passion, open mindedness and kookiness in the biology department... not a squirrel lover
He is the best professor in the whole university. His notes is a bit disorganized but when you do the actual exam, you will understand why he put his notes like this. Study and remember words in his notes because that helps. He truly care about his student, not trying to be tricky on the exam. He just want you to actually learn.
My favourite prof in the whole university. Care about his student a lot. Exams are straight forward. Nothing tricky. Got problems, he will help you for sure.
He's such a chill dude. First few lessons can be confusing because of his odd style of teaching which can seem disorganized but once you get the hang of it you'll be fine. Listen attentively during lesson because you have to take notes to do well for exam. He's very clear about what comes out in the exam tho. And the exam questions are easy
He is super helpful and wants you to learn, his teaching style was weird at first but after a while didn't really mind.
Professor Booth is incredibly passionate about his work and teaching. His main goal is to inspire people to love fungi as much as he does. He is rather disorganized and often will give contradicting or confusing explanations. His lectures do not include much text, so you have to catch what he says. He emphasized what you will be tested on.
His slides are empty so a lot o note taking, he emphasizes whats going to be on exams. He has a weird sense of humour but thats okay. Really nice and wants you to learn
Dr. Booth is passionate about the course, and energetic in conducting it. However, his lectures tend to be disorganized and rambly. I wish I could give him a better review because I really like him as a person, but he's only mediocre as a professor.
Booth presents the material with poor organization, but there's not a lot to know on each exam once you sort it out. The challenge is separating what he wants you to know from "for interest". He is awful at communication, and contradicts himself often. Gets personally offended when the class doesn't answer his questions in lecture.
If you're thinking about taking this class, DO IT! Tom Booth is such a great prof! You MUST go to every class and take notes because basically all of his slides are just pictures. However, going to his class will actually be the highlight of your day. He is hilarious and his stories make lecture content extremely memorable
Really enjoy professor Booths lectures in both 2260 and 3340. Hes such a nice fella, caring and funny. If you get a chance to take a class with him, do it! Turned me into a mushroom hunter haha
Amazing professor. Sure he's a bit disorganized and his slides are a bit disorganized but if you attend lectures he makes it extremely clear what he expects you to know and in the end there's not much material at all. He'll also tell hilarious stories that make the 1 hour class time actually enjoyable!
'Prof' is THE fungi guy. Unfortunately, he seems to know so much and have so much experience that he has a hard time communicating his knowledge to mere mortals. Uses powerpoint slides, but doesn't actually follow them. Spends a lot of time telling personal anecdotes. I stopped going to class after the second week, just got the recommended text.
Dr Booth is a really amazing guy. BIOL 2260 was one of the easier biologies I have ever taken. The class is interesting. There was no final, which was nice (only 2 midterms and an assignment). If you go to class, you will succeed. I would highly recommend.
BIOL 3340 is a little bit harder than 2260, but once again I really enjoyed having prof Booth as a instructor. He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Make sure you go to class as he adds a lot of notes to his slides in class. If you skip, you won't do as well.
Tom Booth is a great prof who tests on very little. Do not panic the first week about how unclear his lectures are, he is very clear on what is testable. The greatest part about the whole course is the collection, I still look for mushrooms and use the book to identify. Definitely take him.
One of the best professeors in the bio deparment. didnt think id find fungi interesting, but his love for funi makes his super engaging, and you listen. he is clear what is tested. funny and engaging. just realy realy good.
For what would seem like a relatively interesting course, Professor Booth unfortunately makes the class incredibly confusing and hard to follow. He seriously needs to relay information properly in his notes or all it will be is a much of shroom pictures with no context. Do not take this course unless needed for credit.
Honestly, the first couple weeks of the class are all over the place and not really anything that you need to know for the tests. He makes it very clear what is testable. 3 tests (no final exam) and a 20% mushroom hunt. (almost guaranteed full marks). He doesnt make you attend the labs.
This prof was absolutely amazing, inspirational and I honestly viewed him as a prof I really respected and idolized. His lecture material granted is confusing, but really isn't hard to understand if you put some work in. Booth if you see this don't ever stop being the funny mushroom guy!!
Only one word needed to describe this man, legend!
I did not have much interaction with the professor as the course was asynchronous but he explained everything needed for the exam very well in the slides. You can understand everything pretty simply with how he explains it and his love for Fungi makes the course even better! We had a great TA as well who helped every single student. 10/10 recommend
Professor Booth is obviously knowledgable in Fungi and Lichens. However, he deeply lacks the ability to relay this knowledge to his students. I don't think I have ever had a prof so disorganized and poor at teaching. It's incredibly hard to grasp the concepts and information with the way he presents it. The material is otherwise fascinating.
Professor Booth might be one of the worst Profs I've had. He's not a tough grader, or rude or anything but he deeply lacks teaching skills. He is unclear with what to expect for exams and his lecture material is so unorganized it is incredibly difficult to follow along. He often uses terminology which hasn't been taught which makes learning difficu
Probably one of the top worst professors I have had at the UofM (in terms of teaching). Have never met nor talked to him, but it is super clear he genuinely does not care to teach. Notes are EXTREMELY confusing, feels like im reading a different language as he doesn't even explain what words mean.. Tests are easy but still avoid this prof.
