Peculiar man, class boring at best, but easily passable
Why does CMU keep hiring him????????
He's ok.. he acts like he's tough, but grades come VERY easily.
Show that you WANT an A by giving some effort, and he will TRY to give you one.
Makes every effort to help you get the best grade. If you get below a B, you are stupid
He is the funniest man ever! Go to his office, visit and get to know him. He makes me laugh.
Good times!
I'm with the first guy, why do they keep hiring him?
He's not as easy as others proclaim. Very anal about commasplices more than four in a paper and you can't get higher than a B+. He's weird and boring.

This guy is a little differant, but not a bad teacher. I just wish his paper descriptions were more clear and less precise...confused?

Treats everyone like they are complete morons when it comes to English, and at the same time, he's way way too excited by the thought of researching. I don't try in this class, but I maintain a B+ average.
He is by far the most boring teacher I have ever had. He takes attendance so you have to go to class. Basically he hands out dittos, gives us ten minutes to read them, then slowly goes over them in class. Nice guy but so boring!
I had this man for eng 101 over a year ago, i loved him. I still go visit him! he's very nice and funny, and is an easy grader if you just listen to the hints and tips he gives you. He still uses one of my papers as a sample!
this man is a nut case
Dr. Brauch is a complete ****! He actually gave me an E on our final paper. I know that paper wasn't the best in the class, but there is no way in hell that I deserved an E. Don't get on his bad side. Now I have to retake the course, because I got a C-

This guy sucks ass. Take my adivise....Take the class with someone else.
This guy is a nice teacher who will help you on your papers but is extremely boring. i mean extremely boring. If you want to spend a whole semester one paper or topic and have to work at it then this is the guy if not take someone else
The man is dull. Dull like "I want to stab myself in the eye after sitting in his class" dull. That pretty much sums him up.
In addition to being dull, he's completely unhelpful. When I met with him during office hours I asked him how to improve the papers I was writing; his response was "pray to the gods for inspiration." What kind of help is that supposed to be? Don't take his class.
Not only is he boring, he thinks he's stimulating. He will not help you even when you see him during office hours. BORING, BORING, BORING!
I fall asleep a lot. He has 1 million hand outs for ever assignment. The class his BORING, he is BORING, other english 201 watch movies, we spend all semester outlining articles and books. I hate it...I wish i didn't take it. Find someone else, ne one else!
he's Mr. Magoo from Hell. this man is a lousy professor. unhelpful. incompetent. boring. crazy. and mean. upon returning a paper to me, he said "i don't remember why i gave you such a high grade, but i did. so there you go," handing me a B-. gee, thanks, a$$. he wasn't even at his office hours.
This guy is insane! His class has little to no relevance to the course. I learned more about history than english. I had to go to his office to get help becase his class was a joke. I did exactly what he told me to do and still got Cs on almost all of my 6 papers. Thanks alot!
For anyone who actually takes writing seriously and wants to be challenged...Dr. Brauch is an excellent professor. He is very smart...yes, he is boring and weird, but he teaches you how to write and how to do research. I'd recommend him for anyone serious about english & research...especially history majors.
He is very excited about writing. Very helpful as well....lots of handouts, however. Prepare to get organized.
I can't stress enough this guy is a spineless ass. He is unclear, boring, and very unhelpful. I was going to graduate and had a job waiting until he told me "start concentrating on other classes because you can't pass this class with a c average". I'm a 3.2 student. **** him!
he is a teacher that is very "unclear" himself... on all of the essays i had written he wrote the word "unclear" at least 5 times on sentences that anyone could understand. I am not sure how he grades because he is a hard grader. He is challanging, be prepared to use words that only he likes, yes he does mark down if u use words he doesnt like
He is absent minded to say the least. He gives you advice on something and then later marks you down for it because he forgot. He also treats his students as if they are stupid by saying things are "common sense" even though you have a legitimate question. Find another prof!
This guy shoudnt be teaching at the college level. As a fellow student i have to warn you, dont take this guys class. He lectures every day about pointless information that wont help you, and he does not give A's. Half of my class wants to see him removed from the school. HE HAS NO GRADING SCALE!!! RUN AWAY!!!
English 101. I took this class as a senior, having delayed taking it due to hearing horror stories. I had already had several advanced writing courses, some at another school. This professor is about the best writing teacher around, I believe. His emphasis on research makes his course all the more salient.
Nice guy, a little out there, but pretty funny. He has an odd sense of humor. If you visit him in his office, he is always ready to help. Class was mostly writing, he would give you a topic for your paper if you couldn't find one. Take him if you get the chance.

Easy class to get a B in. He will let you re-turn your paper in for a higher grade. Very helpful and funny
He wastes hours lecturing in class about nothing, making the class REALLY boring. It seems impossible to do well on the papers...he gives sample ones that he's written and even if you write your paper exactly like he wrote his, you get a B. I wouldn't take a class with him if I were you.
Professor is excellent, a little boring. It is fairly easy to pass, but you have to work to get an A.(it is possible, and rewarding)He is very helpful. He is always in the library to help students with research and papers. He doesn't ask more of you than he does of himself. If you show you are willing to put in the effort he will help all he can.
Dr Brauch is a fantastic teacher. If you attend class and put some effort into your papers, you will pass. Try to get to know him. He is really funny and it never hurts to talk to your professor out of class.
He does not explain anything well. Requires alot without giving accurate direction.
This was the worst class i have ever taken. On one paper he actually failed 24 students. He also told me that my paper was fine but he still failed me because my citations were wrong.
this is not a good prof take ENG 201 with. He requires a lot more papers than most of the others and is extremely boring. grades fairly easy but requires so much work. this class sucked.
possibly the worst teacher I've ever had. He definitely makes himself available for help, but isn't much help even if you seek him out. I received two papers back with a zero on it, but little clarification to why the paper wasn't "worthy of a grade". This class also requires a LOT more work than other 201 classes. I'd advise a different prof.
The professor is really weird and wishes that he was teaching a history class so most of the papers are on history or art. It can be really easy if you just write your papers based on what he would want to hear. He is available all the time for extra help and he returns your papers within a couple of days. You get a chance to redo your papers.
This teacher really requires a lot of work throughout the semester, but if you are interested in becoming a better more prepared writer for the remainder of you college experience he is the one to take. The nice thing is that he always gives you chances at revisions.
He is soooo boring!! It is impossible to get an A in his class. It is a fairly easy class if you go and do the assignments correctly. He nit picks at everything so be careful making mistakes. I wouldnt take him as a teacher
Eng201 sucks anyways. But it just seems like non-stop work. you dont even have a paper turned in yet and hes teaching the next one. He grades pretty hard. And is picky. But overall no matter which teacher you take for this class your going to hate it they all suck equally. Hes nice and helpful and REALLY passionate...almost too much lol
I loved Prof. Brauch! He is very thorough and clear on his assignments. If you ask him for help he is willing to do just about anything for his students. It is obvious he is very passionate and intelligent. He lets you turn in a revised paper for each assignment so you can always bring your grade up.
Attendance is mandatory, but if you get stuck in an early morning class he will let you go to any of his later sections for credit. You don't have to pay attention in class at all, he is very clear on his handouts what he expects on papers. If you are even a decent writer I would def. recommend Brauch
This professor has a tendency to procrastinate with handing out the due dates for papers. His syllabus does not have due dates and he gives you a week to write a paper that needs plenty of research. He also takes an entire class period to discuss grammar or other topics. He also tends to play favorites.
Masterpiece Literature, for those keeping track. He is a really good professor, its just what he teaches is border-lining the Eng equivalent of Physics or Chem. Do not take any of his classes above Eng 101/201 unless you are and Eng major, you WILL struggle.
If you check up papers with him before they are due and come to class it really isnt that bad. He is a great guy, just some boring lectures once in a while. Very 'to the book' but if you somewhat pay attention is really shouldnt be a problem.
He does not teach this course normally, and I believe that this was the first and only time. He is a very intelligent man who is very familiar with the material. He is not very good at TEACHING. He loves the topic, but the passion does not transfer to the student. I do not recommend him for a Lit. Class. You will struggle and become frustrated.
Ok, I have an extreme interest in this subject and not gonna lie, he knows what he's talking about but that DOES NOT mean he's a good teacher. He's unclear concerning assignments, tests, and everything else.
He is a good guy, and a good teacher. You will do well as long as you read and pay attention. He is very clear about what he wants for the most part. I didn't have a positive outlook going in due to ratemyprofessor, but he really isn't that bad. I enjoyed being in his class.
His lectures are boring, but the papers that are assigned aren't too bad. Every paper can be revised and he is extremely quick at grading. Overall, he's a nice guy and is open to helping out his students.
Really, really good teacher. The first couple papers are a crap-shoot, but once you get into the habit of writing his style, you'll get by without a problem. Always allows for revision of papers, and all but spells it out for you. Classes run a few minutes over sometimes, though, so don't plan for any classes across campus right afterwards.
Show up to class, he grades easier if you do, and make an effort to better your papers--I promise it makes a difference. You can slack off and write the paper at the last minute if you're normally a good paper writer, but I don't recommend it. Don't wait until the last day to peer edit, either. Good teacher, kinda dull, but good.
Very dull proffesor. He is very smart and has really good tips for writing paper. He always grades papers fast and is a fairly easy grader. Classes are pretty much going over instructions for paper and you can miss 6 classe without excuses. If you don't have an interest in eng don't pick him as a proffesor!
His lectures are extremely dull, but he's a nice guy. He'll review your paper for you before you turn it in and he's a very fast grader. you'll write a science paper, two opinion papers, a history paper, comparison of two articles, and an art paper. Not a bad class, just be sure to use effort.
He is a very, very nice guy. However, I took ENG 261- Ancient Lit because I'm excellent in literature and English classes, and I love ancient Greek literature. He destroyed it for me, though. His lectures are so, so boring, and although he is intensely passionate about the subject, he is unable to make the class intriguing for anyone.
Very boring lecture. If you go to class he just reads the handouts. The papers are increasingly difficult. He grades the papers very quickly. He is available to help with papers.
Very Good Professor. He gets students all the information they need and is always ready to help. Allows a revision on all essays and if you fix his corrections, he will raise your grade by one whole letter grade. He also had all of our papers graded two days after we turned them in. Highly recommended.
Decent professor. Has very detailed instructions for his laundry list of assignments. Not terribly understanding about personal issues. He makes it very difficult to get an A, but incredibly easy to get a B.
Never in my entire life have I been disgusted or offended by the teaching methods implemented by a professor, until I met Thomas Brauch. While he knows much about English, his teaching methods don't advocate the improvement of students writing; he instead bullies children into submission via unattainable expectations and unfair grading. He's bad.
Very knowledgeable about the subject but extremely boring to sit through, talks about non relevant information sometimes. Corrects papers in a handwriting which myself and three roommates couldn't decipher. Very proud of himself being a PHD. Nice person but its hard to take a class from.
Dr. Brauch is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. He is more than willing to help and makes himself easily available. He allows revisions on papers and is very considerate while grading. If you go to class and respect him, then he will respect you. He enjoys his job and enjoys helping students succeed in any way possible.
Never in my life have I had so much disrespect from somebody. I have always been a good writer, but I could not get higher than a C on any of my papers. After writing 5 papers he suggested I "drop the class because I am going nowhere". He also told me that I would do great if I had another professor only because he's old fashioned... what?
He is so disrespectful, condescending, and rude. He made a girl in my class cry and asked if she was stupid. This class was super boring and harder than it should've been. His exams are impossible. He also doesn't teach. Ever.
Overall a really nice guy. He gave ample opportunity for students to come to him for help outside of his office hours. However, the papers were difficult and he is a very critical grader. There was also a large workload. If you're taking other difficult classes along with ENG 201 I suggest finding another professor. Otherwise, not the worst choice!
Most of the comments here are pretty accurate. He's a nice guy, but a lot of the other students in my class would disrespect him. He offers a lot of help outside of class for anyone who needs it. He spends a lot of time explaining the assignments and gives examples of the kinds of essays he's looking for. He grades very harshly though.
Don't take Enlish with him first off he dosent go over the assignments well at all second he's an ass pretty much indrectly calls the class idots after every paper only commenting on all the bad things oh yeah dont expect an a only a B or lower depending if he likes you or your writing style
He is such a sweet man! He is very understanding and often spends a lot of time at the library. He is available if you need him. He is also a very generous grader. The lowest grade he gave out was a C+ and that person's original score was 24/100. I would highly suggest him!
He has to be the most generous professor I have ever had. Everything you need to know is provided on the handouts he gives in class. Three exams that each have two 3-4 pg typed essays due with it and a course essay. Lectures do tend to get boring, but it's a pretty easy class as long as you show up, talk during discussion, and use the handouts.
This class is incredibly boring, but you can literally sit in class and do nothing whilst not getting marked down for attendance. Don't buy the books, you can read them all the night before the quizzes on sparknotes and get an A. Show up and do the study guides and also, pay attention to the questions he discusses the day of quizzes and you'll pass
I actually dropped this class halfway through, because I was miserable and he was making me hate reading! He is the most boring teacher, ever, and his quizzes are b.s. Hard class, crap lectures. Avoid him like the plague!
You have 6 major exams, worth 85% of your grade and 7 in-class essays worth 15% of your grade. Lectures are painfully boring and papers can get fairly tricky. However if you go to him for help, he is super nice and will tell you exactly what you need help on.
Dr. Brauch is the epitome of "old school" professor. His lectures consists of reading off of a packet, while providing meaningless details along the way. The lectures are unnecessary as everything needed for his quizzes is contained in the packets. Of course, his lectures are mostly mandatory as you are only allowed a couple of skips a semester.
I took this professor as an undergrad student. I am now a PhD student and I can honestly say, this professor is the reason I write well. He grades tough, but he gives excellent feedback. He challenged me to begin writing as an academic. I learned more about writing from this professor than any other writing professor I have EVER had.
His class consists of unclear instructions, lecturing off of a packet, and then him getting mad when you ask for clarification. He's a fairly tough grader. Not an impossible class, he was just not helpful and painfully boring. Even when you ask for help it's still unclear as to what he wants. I would definitely not reccomend this professor.
OLD FASHIONED! He is a very tough grader and honestly the most difficult prof there is for eng 201, all my other friends did not have to do several long essays (8-10 pages)! I would say I'm an okay writer but he grades like I am majoring in English! I never saw a person get an A on an assignment in this class. Just don't take his class.
It's not what class you take, it's who you take it from. Take a class from him.
He is annoying at times, but just get on his good side and write down everything he puts on the board. It'll make your essay writing much easier because his essay formats can get confusing. THERE ARE NO TESTS OR INCLASS ASSIGNMENTS. He just takes the time in class to go over the essays.
Brauch is a very knowledgeable professor, but he's old, and it's probably time for him to move into the next phase of his life. He assigned us a ten page paper due two weeks into the semester. He changed the whole syllabus for the class after students complained, though. I learned a lot in this class, he's just not the easiest man to work with.
Brauch is absolutely horrible. Long boring lectures that only cover his academic writing. Dropped the class after 3 weeks because every lecture was going over MLA format and critiques for papers were absurd
This teacher is very rude and not helpful at all. We had to write very long papers up to 13 pages and the directions were not clear at all. I hated going to this class and I spent all semester writing paper.
This class reflects his whole career, so he taught with lots of enthusiasm!! We had to read a book and write 3-4pg paper about once a week which is a lot to keep up with and he grades tough, but he was always available during his office hours and willing to help. Cares about his students and is very nice. Tough, but would recommend.
Dr Brauch's lectures can be repetitive and boring, but he actually has a great sense of humor and he genuinely cares about his students! He is passionate about literature and the books he assigns are interesting. Papers were mostly 3 pages and he allows two rewrites. Would definitely take him again
The class itself is very simple, a few in class essays combined with a number of formal papers. The papers are on easy straightforward topics, the problem lies in his grading. He lectures and treated us like we were in middle school and then graded our papers as we were at a way higher level than ENG 101. Would not recommend
I enjoyed Dr. Brauch. He did use a lot of packets, and I didn't always feel like I "had" it when I left class, but once I let the material percolate and sat down to write the papers, most of what I needed could be found in the packets. The rest were found in the outside sources for the papers, much of the time. He's really a fair grader.
I struggled a ton the first few weeks of this class. His lectures are boring, if you don't take notes on the handouts he gives you, it'll make it more difficult for you to write the papers. He loves giving people B's, but he seemed to like me. He's pretty "anal" about MLA format (his words). But, if you're good at writing, you'll do fine.
Nothing specific to subject matter was taught in class to ensure success on the MANY LONG papers assigned. Grading and feedback did not help. Easily accessible but NOT helpful. Repeats unnecessary information in lectures, DEFINITELY past the point of retirement. Would not recommend.
Older guy with boring lectures. He can be a tough grader, but will help you if you go to his office and will actually get to know you. He actually cares about the students!
HES AWESOME. you can turn in a paper two days late and he won't even care. papers are long but duh, its an english class. he's very easy and allows you to resubmit papers.
In my opinion he is too old to be teaching. He stares at his podium and reads his handouts to the class, rarely looking up at the class. Very knowledgable and passionate about greek literature but does not engage with the class at all. Lots of greek literature to read and a lot of essays. Does not grade very nicely.
Dr. Brauch is a decent professor but his classes are VERY lecture based and are very long. He spends a lot of time rambling instead of actually teaching anything. Gives good feedback on papers & allows you to turn in a revision to bring your grade up. Go to class & do the revisions and you'll do fine.
Professor Brauch is a nice guy, just not a good teacher. You will read 7-9 books and write 8-9 papers in the semester. Also you have a quiz the day before the paper is due. His lectures are so long and boring and he reads right from the handout that he gives you. You are only graded on papers, quizzes, discussion points, and attendance.
Brauch is an old guy. He can be very rude to students when he is having a bad day. Papers must be 6-8 pages long and he is picky about citations. He gives out papers with instructions on how to do the essays and then lectures on the material that is sitting right in front of you. He calls out students with bad papers in front of the class too.
I was so bored in class because he reads word for word of what he writes on the handouts. You will read about 8 books, and write about 7-9 papers. All you do is listen to him talk in class, do a quiz over every book, and write a paper on every book. Very annoying class to take and I would never let anyone I know take this class, it is that bad.
DON'T go to Office hours unless if you have everything almost perfect. If you get something wrong, even if you're asking about it, he will chew you out and act so upset because of it. It was very upsetting. Plus, classes are all lecture. SO boring...
its easy just a lot of papers which are only 3 pages long. class is super boring though and he doesnt use blackboard
This class is increidbly hard since the professor is nearly impossible to please when it comes to papers. Lectures are but he makes attendance mandatory. He's rude and condescending to students and I would not recommend taking this class with him, find a different professor.
ENG201 was rough
Lets his personal views get in the way of picking topics you want; and gives you list of acceptable topics that you need to pick from
He will lecture you for the first month of class over MLA Format. It's painful to stay awake in his class. Cannot read his dumb cursive writing. Doesn't grade content but grammar instead.
When asking him how to make parts of my paper better he thought I was trying to convince him to change it... his response was "what do you want me to do about it"? TEACH ME!!
He failed 18 students on the first paper because the work cited and in-text citations weren't up to his expectations. Bad hand writing so you can't read his feed back. Do not ask questions about your paper in class because he'll probably yell at you about how bad your paper is... in front of the entire class. V old, does not open blackboard shell.
Dr Brauch is an interesting character. For one thing he has a tendency to close his eyes whenever he is explaining things to the class. He drills students on citations even though there is easybib, etc. He will fail you on citations but when I asked him if I should change the substance of the paper he said no :(. Never uses blackboard. Good luck!
I was a TA for English classes for 3 years before taking ENG201 with him and he told me that I was taught wrong in my AP Lang and Lit classes. I feel incompetent in his classroom. He acts like the textbook he assigns is God Herself. Honestly, I just bought it because it's cheap and it provides at least a minimal understanding to his lectures.
His handwriting is impossible to read corrections, and he is very condescending. Changes standard APA/MLA rules to fit his own agenda which makes doing well next to impossible. Lets his personal opinions/preferences get in the way of actually teaching and grading fairly. His class is awful to sit through, and he makes you feel stupid for no reason.
He is a decent teacher. The only thing you do in this class is write, which for an English class, makes sense. His citation needs are pretty whack and could use some help. I write my papers while he lectures. All of the papers are your choice of a topic, except the last paper that one is a little rough. Doesn't grade off of his own opinions.
This man's "lectures" are just him rambling for an hour and a half about the intricacies of MLA format. The lectures were horrible and I hardly ever had a desire to go to class. Being an English class, I expected many papers - but there was way more than expected with little time to do each. Brauch is a very nice guy, but so incredibly boring.
uhm he was a joke the course was a joke. English has always been my strongest subject and my fav one but walking out of this classroom was a relief. He graded in pencil and you were lucky if you could read it on a good day. if you take him get ready to wake him up before you leave the library on work days. GOOD LUCK.
