Dr. Bussey is such an amazing professor! His lectures are clear-cut and so are his exams. Exams and quizzes cover a lot of conceptual ideas, so be sure you pay attention in lecture. He posts practice questions online which aren't mandatory, but very useful when studying for exams. Overall, I'm so glad he transferred from UNLV to UCSD :)
He really is a great professor. Clear lectures and always there for you in Office Hours, but it can get really crowded. Attendance in lecture is pretty much mandatory unless you want to miss out on Group Work, which is worth 10% of your grade. His quizzes are easy but his tests are rather difficult because of the way grading works. Would recommend
Pros: +Extremely clear and engrossing lectures. +Provides many resources (lecture outline online, practice probs, study guides) +Majority of student got B's easily +Grade not just based on tests Cons: -Tests can be difficult -Hard to raise grade to an A -Discussions mandatory -Lectures nearly mandatory bc group work goes toward grade
Bussey is a great teacher but don't expect to do well if you are the plug and chug type. Really helpful guy and clear in lectures. KNOW THE CONCEPTS and you will do fine. Great professor and okay tests (lot of writing about concepts)
He is the best professor ever. His exams are extremely fair. His lectures are clear and very helpful. He has additional resources such as a study guide and sample problems. I would definitely take him again. I'm so sad that he's not teaching chem 6b or 6c.
I am so glad I took Bussey; his lectures are crystal clear and he's very good at explaining concepts and going through the problems step by step. He lectures using powerpoints and uploads all of his slides with blanks so that students can fill in as he goes. Go to lectures!! His exams and final were pretty easy; just study his learning objectives.
One of the professors I have taken so far at UCSD and he make's chemistry fun! He's crystal clear and explains things really well through the use of power point slides. His quizzes and tests are somewhat hard because they're more conceptual. Understand the material and you should do fine.
Great professor! He speaks very clearly and takes the time to explain topics thoroughly. There are 3 quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final. Make sure to attend lecture because there are also weekly in-lecture group work.
The BEST professor in UCSD chemistry department. His lectures are extremely clear and perfectly organized. He is super articulate and knows the stuff. He makes chemistry easy to understand and FUN. That tells something. Online Assignments are super helpful for preparing for exams and quizzes. Definitely recommend him
I once went in for is office hours to talk to him about my grade, and he asked for my last name. Without even looking at his computer he had my name, another students name and asked which one I was. Goes to show that he really pays attention to each grade and student. His tests and quizzes are hard considering that they are all free response.
Overall the course was pretty simple considering it is an introduction to Chemistry. Lectures are clear and helpful. He bases the grade off of the student with highest grade so the curve in the end is extremely generous, taking off 501000 of total possible points. Would highly recommend him to any one who wants an easy A- or A.
I loved Dr. Bussey and his class! Super clear, fair, and straight-forward with what he expects. No surprises on exams, really cares for students, fair grading scale, and just awesome personality in general. Just study his learning objectives and you'll be fine for the exams. Take him! He's one of the best professors you will have a chance to take.
Best chemistry professor by far at UCSD. Material in class was well explained, and he lectures in a way that is very conducive to note taking. There are no surprises on the exams he gives, and homework is representative of the course material. It's a shame he only teaches 6A at the moment, I would gladly take him for all quarters of the chem series
Bussey was new to UCSD, and has been a great addition. I took him for chemistry and he was a very clear lecturer, no accent and speaks at a good volume. Chemistry was a hard subject for me, but he made it bearable! Definitely recommend him!
There is no doubt that professor Bussey was heaven sent to UCSD. Seriously, he's amazing!! He's very helpful and cares about helping students. Chemistry itself is hard so I relied on Clutch prep to help me pass too (another life saver), but Bussey is the best option.. I recommend you take him! Would totally take him again
Bussey is crazy amazing!!! His lectures are fast paced, but only because he bothers to actually go into depth about the material. He explains the concepts well and in a way students understand. He's extremely fair with test regrades and is extremely helpful if you come to him. Tests are all free response, but he teaches well, so it's worth it!
Great professor, highest rated Chem professor for a reason. You need to study for quizzes and exams, but class is curved based off of highest grade received out of 1000 points (i.e: highest grade at end of quarter is 950/1000 and your grade is 920/1000, then you get 920/950).
Midterms and quizzes are brutal, but there is a lot of work and homework grades that will help your grade. Group work in place of iClicker questions, so participation matters. Group projects in discussion as well
helpful, clear quizzes are fair, but not too reasonable, sometimes you get point off for meaningless minor details. Exams are long and hard. Also take off LOTS OFF point for minor math details. E.g Sig figs, conversions of unit(if you forget to convert units, many points gonna be deducted), and explanation of the most detailed concepts.
Amazing professor. In high school, I took Chem for 2 years (Honors and AP) and only received a 3 on the AP Exam. But because of Bussey, I became really good at chem. He explains concepts really well and his office hours are useful. As long as you study his course objectives before every quiz and midterm, you're pretty much guaranteed a good grade.
I've never understood why people complain about chemistry professors taking off points for "minor details". It's chemistry bruh! Sig figs and units seriously matter in the world of science and medicine! So for those who are turned off by that, good luck finding a professor that's not gonna mark down points for not being precise! Bussey is awesome!
Bussey is one of the best Chemistry professors at UCSD. He is a very effective teacher with powerpoint slides. The quizes are okay and so are the tests. The only drawback is that the midterms and finals are on Saturday, but other than that I recommend.
For my opinion, he is just okay, not as great as what people praise him to heaven. Quizzes are pretty easy but tests are long and tough. You need to really understand the materials to do well on tests. Also, he requires lots of group work.
Definitely one of the better 6A professors at UCSD.
Bussey is the best. If you have a choice between him and other chem professors take him no hesitation. His tests are fair, his hw is fair, the whole class is. He was such a good and funny prof and I hope i get more like him
Professor Bussey was a good professor who answered all questions and was very helpful. I was able to pass with just his lectures alone because they explained the material well. He is a tough grader though
his test are more concept based than math based
Bussey is really good at explaining concepts and making you understand chemistry. On his quizzes and tests, there are concept questions and make sure you your response is as detailed as possible because there are certain key points you have to address to get full points. Overall, his midterms and finals are fair at testing your knowledge.
I considered myself pretty bad at chemistry coming into his class, but that changed. His lectures are VERY clear and structured. Both a really good professor and funny person overall. Quizzes/exams are based exactly on what he says will be on them, aka use learning objectives. All the necessary resources are on TED and in his powerpoints.
He cares!
Professor Bussey is an amazing professor, one of the best chem professors at UCSD. His tests are for the most part fair and there are very few surprises. Make sure to go to his lectures as he has group work for points.
Amazing - very clear and concise. Pay attention and you will learn - he gives clear examples and doesn't trick you with new problems. The catch is his tests are HARD, all free-response with merciless grading. BUT, you will learn the material very well if you just attend lecture and do HW. Pre-Meds weigh your risk - one grade vs easier time later
Dr. Bussey is a cool guy, very easy to understand(voice wise) and makes lectures somewhat bearable. However, there was a major lack of in-class demos/anecdotal examples. If you're a visual learner, Dr. Bussey may not be right for you.
Yassss!
He's an amazing professor and truly cares about his student's success. The discussion sections are awesome, and you can really take a lot from them in you and your group put it in the effort.
Bussey is a great guy, very funny, his slides make you take notes automatically. Participation is necessary in lecture. Midterms are not too bad, quizzes are fairly easy. The homework is necessary for credit but it really helps. Study hard and you will be fine.
Prof. Bussey is awesome. He uses podcast and uploads his lecture slides. His lectures are very clear. He replies to emails very quickly. Sapling homework is reasonable. Sometimes the textbook is needed to answer some hw questions. Tests are fair short answer questions that test you on calculation and concepts. A lot of memorization is required.
AMAZING Bussey is a great prof! The exams are straightforward. The practice problems are a great way to prep. He explains everything so well in lecture and does a ton of examples. I would take him again in a heartbeat! I actually understand chemistry and not just how to do the problems to get the A.
Chill guy, helpful in office hours and approachable.
Professor Bussey is literally the best professor I've ever had. If you aren't taking him at least once here at UCSD, you're messin up
This guy really is an outstanding educator. He is explicit in both his grading criteria and exams. Homework is fair. He honestly turned what was basically my least favorite subject into my favorite. Re-watch the podcasts, exams are almost entirely based off of what was discussed in lecture. Thank you Dr. Bussey for making chem accessible to me.
Extremely fair exams, honestly isn't trying to trick you. Never touched the textbook as he made very clear what he expected us to learn through lecture and homework. He's also very clear at explaining things, so overall definitely recommend him!
He gives 2 midterms and a final with a lot of sapling online homework, in class group work and discussion section group work so it is easy to bring up your grade if you do not do well on one of the exams. All of his exams are free response but he gives partial credit.
I took 6C with Bussey and all in all, he's probably the best professor I've had till yet. His lectures are brilliant and the notes(which I recommend you take cuz it's not too hard) are self explanatory. The class was enjoyable and the Chemistry I learnt from him ACTUALLY stayed in my head. Definitely recommend.
By far the best professor I have had yet. His lectures make chemistry really understandable and he often relates what we're learning to a real life situation (which makes everything seem more relevant). His tests are all free response which is brutal but with him you can still get a decent score. Definitely recommend
Took both Chem 6A and 6B with professor Bussey, by far the best professor I've had at ucsd so far. His lectures are clear and organized and easy to take notes for. Attendance is checked through mini-group works throughout the quarter that are more like concept checks and are really helpful.
Prof. Bussey was an AMAZING Chem 6B professor. He makes everything extremely easy to understand and what he teaches in lecture truly does reflect his learning objectives and the tests. However, his grading scale is harsh, making a 91% a B+, so you have to work really hard if you want an A in his class.
Prof Bussey is the best. He explains chemistry concepts with such clarity and makes it relevant by providing in class demos and real life examples. He has a lot of learning checks in his powerpoints which I personally like, and the way he structures his notes is conducive to note taking. But his grading scale is cancer, so work hard for the A!
He is an amazing lecturer, so if you pay attention and take good notes you will learn the material. Basically every topic he covers will be on the exam, especially the "conceptual" ideas. The exams are completely free response and he looks for specific terminology. You'll do great if you KNOW the material, since he doesn't try to trick you.
He is a good professor tho, but his tests were so hard. And also his curve is not that big, so dont take him if you expect a big curve at the end. Also, the attendance for discussion is mandatory, for the lecture, it's not, but he has those unannounced groupworks, which I missed 2 because I overslept.
Professor Bussey is the best professor so far. I entered UCSD and had a terrible 6A professor and made me dislike chem very badly. Taking 6B with Bussey made me like chemistry A LOT. His skeleton-style notes are worthy of printing out and going along during class. THAT WON'T BE ENOUGH. I rewrote my notes very carefully to make sure I learn them.
Tests are all free response, 9 pages each midterm and 14 pages final and he sometimes grades unfairly. If you don't mind that then go ahead and take him, his lectures are good.
Test hevy b/c his tests weren't hevy on the grade percentage (beside the usual) but his tests were very long. All free response with about 8 pages but subsections of a, b, and c. GREAT lectures, GREAT teacher, and also wrote work on tablet so you could easily make up lecture on podcast; however, didn't have clicker pts but had group wk. worth 2 pts
I loved Bussey because if you attended his lectures and rewatched the podcasts, you would get a good grade. Compared to Johnson, Bussey is a lot easier and he is so much more thorough in the way he teaches. Bussey will go over a concept many times in order for you to understand and he really cares about his students. Take him!
Dr. Bussey is a great professor in all aspects. He speaks clearly, he answers questions thoroughly, and he structures the class in a way so that if you pay attention during lectures, you will do well on the exams (which by the way are quite difficult). However, if you do tend to nod off, he podcasts his lectures online as well! Overall great prof!
Great lecturer but his exams are hard (all free response and 10 pages too long) and his grading is hard AND on top of that the cut off for an A- is 92-93 and B+ is 91-90 (what happened to the old school days when a 90 was an A-?) so any adjustments to the class point total does nothing for you. You will put in the work for an A and still get a B!!!
Don't know about other chem professors but his tests are HARD and he expects you to know every single detail from his lecture slides. His grading scale is hard too (94% for a solid A and not much curve). Great lecturer though so take him if you really want to learn and work hard.
Excellent lectures, no weekly quizzes. 10/10
He is a literal god sent from the heavens to UCSD, a godless place in need of enlightenment. Never have I heard ideas expressed so clearly and with such grace. If you value your education or your life, take Dr. Bussey.
Bussey is a great chem prof, he'll deconstruct complex topics and make sure you really understand everything. His tests are very specific and often more concept based than math, however the hw is math intensive. He's a great lecturer and very helpful during office hours. If you're stuck between Bussey and Johnson I'd say go for Bussey, less work.
His lectures are well thought out with powerpoint live drawings and diagrams and he podcasts as well. After almost every topic he's done introducing, he'll stop the class and ask if there's any questions and he's patient enough to answer every question the class has. His learning objectives (and picky wording) are his tests so study his lectures.
He speaks very clearly and is a little punny during his lectures. The only "downside" is that he will do random "group work" in lectures, just to make sure that you are attending them. He was very enjoyable and I would definitely take him again as a professor.
In my opinion he was one of the professors that i enjoyed the most because his lectures were very enjoyable but his test were mediocre and another thing is his random group session during lectures.
Bussey is an amazing professor! His slides are clear and his online homework is very useful for learning and reviewing. His exams are a little bit hard b/c there are no multiple choices, so you need to understand every concept very well. I love him so much that I recommend every one to take his class!!!
Gives extra credit based on online practice. Good Professor, knows his stuff.
Professor Bussey is a great lecturer but I guess his teaching style just didn't click with me. I felt like a lot of times he went over difficult material way too quickly. Tests were all free response so you need to know all of the material in depth. Harsh grading scale but he gives an extra credit opportunity and test score replacement.
Best prof ever! I don't like Chemistry but he made it so enjoyable. All his exams are based solely off of his lectures so if you watch his podcasts a couple times you will be set for the exam! Totally recommend
Awesome professor! Definitely will take again!
He is a great lecturer who wants to make sure you really understand the material. Exams are usually free response. If you pay attention in class, go over lecture material, go to discussion... you'll be fine. Discussions are also mandatory! I loved taking his class over summer. He also ended up curving a little bit! Great professor!
Clear voice and made sure the concepts were clear. Lectures are mandatory because he assigns random "group work" activities (5 min long). 2 midterms per quarter that are 10ish pages all free response, but all based on lecture material so it wasn't too bad. Discussions are mandatory. Curve based on top scoring students. Highly recommend.
I hated chemistry but after taking his class, I love it! His lectures are very conceptual, but easy to understand due to his explanations. One of the best lecturers I have ever had. His tests are all free response but they are very fair and doable.
BEST CHEM PROFESSOR EVER!!!
Doesnt really help learn anything. Pretty much have to know stuff on your own.
Prof Bussey makes Chem as interesting as possible during lectures. You must attend lecture as there are graded groupwork assignments and skipping those will affect your grade. Discussion is also mandatory and each week there is a group assignment too. Homework is due once weekly online and never took up too much time. Overall a good Chem class!
Very caring professor, felt like he enjoyed teaching and made it more bearable to attend lectures. Very reasonable tests and grading scale.
Great professor, in lectures he hints at content that will be on tests. Book reading and practice problems are suggested and helpful but not mandatory. He is really great at breaking down ideas and making chemistry fun. Grading is fair and based on a set scale then adjusted to the highest earned points. You should take his class.
His lectures are SUPER good. He focuses more on making sure everyone undsrstands the content. I would highly recommend. The class isnt an easy A though, you have to make sure you know your stuff. All the content is on his lectures tho so if you get that, youll be fine
I think that bussey is a great lecturer and really helps you understand the concepts. His lectures were very clear and precise and he podcasts. His test are extremely long usually taking the whole time but are fair. His grading scale on the other hand isnt, he curves of the top score even tho my 91% in the class turned out to be a B+.
6C was my favorite class out of the chem 6 series and I think taking it with Bussey made it even more enjoyable! He's a great lecturer, gives fair exams and even gives extra credit opportunities. Attendance is mandatory just bc he gives random group work assignments but other than that 10/10 would recommend. Wish I got an A in the class though
Great teacher but tests are ridiculously unreasonable in both expectation and grading. They're long and entirely free response. He expects answers to include every redundant obvious detail and if it isn't written in the exact words and direction he wants, it's wrong. Then you have to argue for points. Grades don't match actual learning achievement.
He is he best chem teacher ever. His tests may be slightly more difficult compared to others (all free response). However, he really cares about his students and is willing to help. I thought I knew chem before. But now I actually jow chem because of this guy. He's got a good sense of humor which is a plus. Take him if you get the chance.
He is a very kind and respected professor but he oversimplifies the lectures. Then on exams, he combines all of the information. There is no practice exams and no practice problems so the only thing I had to rely on were Sapling and book problems that I got from my other friends. The in class group assignments takes time away from the lecture.
Agree with some reviews that grading sometimes doesnt match your learning achievements. Tip: write as much as you can even though the knowledge is obvious because you will mark down if you dont, including units in every calculation and shows work even the simpliest things. There is pros and cons in free reaponding style. An A is doable though.
At the end of each chapter, there is an in-lecture group assignment submitted for credit. Bussey allows you to drop the lowest grade in every category at the end of the quarter, and your final replaces the lowest midterm if you score better on it. He also offers five points of extra credit before the final which is more helpful than it sounds.
Not worth it tbh, he say you won't need the textbook when you will you won't pass with his lectures.
Took him for B and C, and it was great! He's really clear on what he wants you to know! His material is very conceptual, so be prepare to write and explain things. For exams, all I used was his lecture. The final is mostly the midterms but with different numbers or reworded.
A brilliant lecturer, he even explains what is important to takeaway in lecture, what he expects of you to do on an exam, and offers abundant resources. But beware, his grading scale makes it slightly harder to get an A (92 is B+) so there is a minor setback to guaranteed learning. Exams are all free-response, get ready to grind out chem knowledge.
Dr. Bussey is an amazing professor who does a great job explaining chemistry concepts. In CHEM 6C I had to skip class once a week due to conflicting schedules but I was able to catch up via podcast and review sessions in order to make sure I still knew the material. He teaches exactly what is needed to be known for his exams too.
He is a great teacher; very clear and concise in his lectures, and is willing to offer extra explanation if needed. If you don't pay attention or show up to class, it is VERY easy to get lost, even if you review the online powerpoint from lecture. If you did not take honors/AP chemistry in high school- this class will be extremely difficult!!!!
Bussey is truly amazing. I take his Chem 6A and his lecture is well organized and he is really knowledgable and clear in explaining Chem ideas. But here are some tips for u in order to get an A! Read the textbook prior to his lecture or after his lecture. In-class group work is really important which might be on the test.
Taking his class currently and it is impossible. The average was a D- on the midterm and he doesn't curve so.....? Also just because you understand the material does not mean you will do well if you don't say exactly word for word what he wants you get points off. Also he has errors on the midterms so that's great.
Professor Bussey is honestly an amazing teacher. I wish I would've had him for the whole gen chem series, if I did I might have actually learned something in chem 6A/B. The only downsides to him are the fact that his grading scale is harsh (a 92 is an A) and his test are very long, hard, and conceptual. But overall I would definitely recommend him.
An amazing professor, very interesting and entertaining. His lectures are engaging and easy to follow. He posts his lecture outlines on canvas, making note-taking easy. There are podcasts although attendance is mandatory. What's taught in class is very reflective of his tests. A little hard, but learning is guaranteed. My favorite professor so far!
Probably the best professor I've taken this quarter. He really knows his material and does a great job lecturing and explaining all of the material. He also posts lecture slides with fill-in-the-blank type notes, and the class is podcasted. Exams are difficult but fair, and they are all free response. There usually isn't a curve.
Bussey's an amazing professor. He lectures well and seems very likable as a person. His tests are hard, but fair. Study the learning objectives, do lots of practice, and really understand the concepts and how everything can connect. Don't just memorize terms and ideas. Understand them. As hard as this class was, I'd say I learned a lot at least.
Greatest prof in chem dept. Attendance is somehow mandatory since there will have group work done on the class. Easy A if you go through the lectures (podcast as well) and homework and follow the learning objective to review.
I don't know why everyone gives Professor Bussey such good reviews. He lectures way too fast to understand and he comes off as condescending. His philosophy is "more is more", so he puts lots of practice problems and learning objectives on his website, however no extent of preparation can prepare you for his extremely hard tests.
This proffesor is amongst the best chem proffesor the campus has to offer. He is very concept-based so you need to understand the why of the content to pass his class. That also means he is not heavy on math but you still need to be careful with your algebra. No clicker questions.
Dr. Bussey is an absolutely brilliant lecturer. His slides have lots of information, but he explains all of the topics very well, and always makes sure he answers all questions before moving on. His tests are all free-response and HEAVILY concept-based, so they require a deep understanding of the material and WHY things happen. Take him if you can!
Was super excited to get Bussey for Chem 6C. BIG Regret. He is a good teacher but he grades exams so harshly you go to class and he says Congrats. You guys did really good. The average was a 63. Like are you kidding me? How is that good?! I took AP Chem in high school so a lot of it was review but I still struggled. You have to teach yourself.
No curves, no cheat-sheet, no love. Take at your own risk. He is very concept based so little to no use of equations. Based on who you are this is either good or bad. But if you're expecting easy tests, take someone else. There is always room for error when it comes to free response questions.
he's really good at explaining things, even though they can be boring--if that makes sense. test questions are fair, but harshly graded, especially the short answers. Discussions are mandatory, which was actually kind of good for me I think! I'm not used to STEM classes requiring discussion and I think it helped. I should go to more discussions lol
Bussey is an amazing lecturer. His tests cover whats on the lectures, so no surprise curveballs. However, his tests are comparatively harder than other 6 series profs (free response, concept-heavy, nitpicky grading, no cheatsheet) and an A- begins at 92. I did not take AP Chem, so I had to study hard. Thanks to him, I feel more confident in chem.
If you have a chance to take the TMC Honors Seminar, I highly recommend. I learned a lot, about the world and about myself, and Professor Bussey was an amazing facilitator. I'd take any class he teaches, he's that good.
I didn't have a good chem background from high school, but Prof. Bussey gives a great overview of Gen Chem and is able to do so at a manageable pace. Always open to questions, and always gives thorough answers, even to the dumb questions. His tests are fair and I think if I studied a little more I would've have gotten an A.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Professor Bussey and his TAs know what they're doing. You'll have bi-weekly exams & most answers come straight from the lecture. He's very thorough so make sure to take notes on every little thing he mentions. At OH, he'll usually tell you key topics to know for the exam. Workload is completely manageable.
Dr. Bussey is such a good professor. His open office hours are really helpful and he explains concepts very well. His lectures are very clear and I never had to read the textbook. I highly recommend him
Bussey explains things very conceptually and my grade relied mostly on the learning checks he gave every two weeks. The lectures are upwards of an hour each and sometimes don't cover everything in the homework. The homework isn't too bad, 30 questions every week plus notes/discussion posts. I used the textbook for most of my learning and did fine.
Professor Bussey is a good professor, but I feel like that more true if we were still in an in-person environment. His lecture pre-recordings are relatively long and it can be hard to focus especially during this pandemic. He also gives biweekly learning checks and they can be challenging if you don't watch/understand the lecture.
Professor Bussey was an okay-ish teacher for me. His structure for the class is very clear and easy to follow. All of his lectures are prerecorded and after every 2 chapters, there are learning checks to assess your knowledge of the 2 chapters. So its your responsibility to watch the lectures and take notes. You also get homework every week.
While my course was taken online, Professor Bussey provided a clear outline with what is expected from you to earn your grade. There's alot of conceptual understanding mixed in with a bit of math in his learning checks which were essentially quizzes and the main grade determining thing during the course, but just watch the lecture at 2x
Dr. Bussey is very knowledgeable and his class is straightforward in terms of what you need to do to get an A. Because I took this class online, he had 5 Learning Check Tests over the course of the quarter which were time consuming and at times mentally taxing. This is not an easy class, but an A is certainly attainable. Make sure to attend lecture
Because this was an online class, all the lectures were prerecorded. They weren't the most exciting but very easy to understand and follow. Overall the assignments were easy and office hours helped greatly with getting questions answered. I'm not the greatest at chem but if you do the reading and watch the videos you will do well
I really enjoyed Professor Bussey's class, and feel like I learned a lot from taking the course. I did take the class online, so lectures were pre-recorded, but they were very clear. If you watch the lectures and take notes you will have a clear idea of what is going on. I regret not going to office hours more often, they were helpful when I did go
The material covered has a new and interesting twist even if you have taken chemistry before. But this also means that you need to be really attentive to the lectures and not fool yourself by thinking you already know the material. Ex. Ionic bond can be explained by wikipedia in one sentence but the entire theory required his 80 min lecture.
He is a good professor, he cares for his students and is always helpful. However, I think his lectures are hard to understand and you need to put a lot of effort to pass this course which is a thing I didn't do.
One of the best chemistry classes I've ever had, and I highly recommend taking Bussey. He made it easy to understand the content, so if you watch the lectures and do the work then you will do well in the class. Practice problems were very reflective of what is on the exams, and he gives a lot of resources to help you prepare.
I took Dr. Bussey during the pandemic and I really think he did a great job. He would have asynchronous lectures and use the actual "class time" to answer questions. To do well on the Learning Checks, you need to really listen to the lectures and use what you learned in the lecture to answer the learning objectives. I don't think you need the TB.
His lectures are amazing but super long. You have to pause them every five seconds to write stuff down. Tests are completely free-response and the grading criteria is very harsh. He's not the most friendly but he does care and will help you at office hours. Better than most profs but you really have to work for an A.
very kind and helpful throughout the quarter. his tests were hard sometimes but he always helped during office hours and gave an extra credit opportunity during finals week. would definitely recommend.
I loved this class. He made the concepts easy and the lectures further explained the textbook concepts. Its hard to fail, just pay attention and do the work. He drops some assignments (1 per section) but you have to stay organized with due dates.
Just an overall amazing professor! He makes me feel like that he was MADE FOR TEACHING. He explains much better than the textbook. He will also answer any questions you have in class. Pretty funny guy as well.
Tests are worth 60% of your grade and the scale is skewed to exams, the professor is nice but the tests are ones you need to read for
The homework isn't hard, it barley gives you any credit (multiple choice and online) PLEASE go to lecture, you have bi-weekly learning checks that are rather difficult if you DON'T master the content in lectures. I liked the class because it pushed me to do well for my grade. He's a super good professor, but office hours is still necessary lol.
His tests are difficult to study for and when I did I still scored well below what I would in any other class, stay away if you're looking for a Chem class that is easy to understand, not to mention the assignments are due on the same week he hold tests, his grading scale would be easy except his exams are UPLOADED PDFS, which takes time.
He's a great professor who is clear with what he needs from you. The math on the exams can get a little difficult, but that's the case with all chemistry and from what I've heard from peers, the way he teaches it is the best comparatively. If you keep up, you'll do well for the most part, but he's available for aid and I'd seriously take advantage.
dr. bussey is one of my fav profs this year. he is extremely nice and you can tell that he truly cares about his students as well as chemistry in general. his lectures are full of useful information and he teaches in a very engaging manner. homework is pretty easy but beware of biweekly learning checks (but you do get to bring a cheat sheet)
You have a textbook reading due for each lecture, but I usually did the readings first and then watched all of the lectures at the end of the week. He really cares about students and how they approach his class, it makes the class a lot less stressful. Take good notes! They will benefit you more than you know.
I really liked Bussey for chem4, the lectures were super in depth and he made it very clear what he was planning to put on learning checks. He made the intro to chem super easy and understandable and most of the tests had average grades above an 85%. I would recommend!
Dr. Bussey is an amazing professor, highly recommended. His tests are hard but if you put time in to study and understand the concept of each module you are tested on, then you should be okay. Tests are all free response. Homework is almost-all multiple choice and unlimited attempts.
don't.
The outcome of your grade will heavily be counted on learning checks. As long you take good notes and pay attention during the lectures, the class won't be as hard.
Took online FA21. Accessible, caring & approachable. OH helpful - sometimes gives hints about exams. 4 midterms: non-cumulative, short answer, yes partial credit, open-note. No final. Best way to study: fully answer/understand all learning targets, redo lecture & prob set problems. All lectures async - explains concepts clearly. Fair drop policies.
I took a remote version of the class with professor Bussey and he made it extremely easy to follow and his lectures were prompt and to the point with good examples. He was rather easy to reach when I needed help and would check up on us throughout the quarter.
There are 4 learning checks besides final and they can be hard. The good thing is you can take cheat sheets. Drop lowest homework, reading assignment, and discussion activity. There are two discussions each week and they are mandatory.
I took Bussey remote class and his videos were super easy to follow and gave a great understanding of the content. If you understand all the information the tests were super straightforward and easy.
Goes over topics very quickly. Expect discussion section to be mandatory.
This Professor was great, super respected. There is a lot of homework in the course, and exams every two weeks, but its good if you watch the videos
Lots of homework, but it is good preparation for the exams. You can bring a cheat sheet to exams, so as long as you pay attention to the material they aren't super difficult. Choose your discussion groups carefully, because you're expected to stick to the same group all quarter and part of every exam is completed as a group.
The lectures aren't mandatory as they are recorded usually, but the discussion sections ARE mandatory. You are graded on attendance and participation of the assignments. He also does give hints about what will be on the quizzes and lets you bring a cheat sheet for the quizzes! I would very very strongly recommend him!!
Professor Bussey is very interactive, and makes the content easy to understand. You can tell he is really passionate in what he does, and cares for students' success and understanding. The TopHat extension is especially useful to prepare for lectures and exams. I would highly recommend his class. He's also funny.
He is a great teacher and does care about his students, he gives hints to what will be on the quizzes and drops/replaces your lowest test score if you do better on the last learning check. If you're not great at chemistry or science this class will probably be difficult at first, but I recommend going to his office hours and joining a study group!
Very caring teacher who excels at his job. His tests were difficult, but his teaching method was excellent. Very informative and ensured you understood the concepts.
Overall great professor. I would recommend paying attention in lecture, as he drops a lot of hints as to what will be covered on the tests. The tests are fair, though they do require you to know all of the concepts in order to properly apply that knowledge to your answers (as there are no multiple choice tests, all are FRQs).
Absolutely amazing professor. Take him if you are able to. He gives hints of what will be on tests, and the tests are pretty straightforward. Discussions are in groups and graded on the completion of assignments. Grading is fair and pretty easy to get an A. His lectures are very clear and if I could retake him if, I would definitely do so.
Prof. Bussey oversimplifies chem concepts and complicates them at the same time. The class average on the tests was quite low and he was happy with them. As a non stem major, I had to take this class for my GE and ended up p/np the class because it was not aceable.
Professor Bussey gave a great explanations of the topics and was very helpful in class when it came to questions. Bi-weekly learning checks were given that were all free response. He also provides summary videos aside from lecture that were helpful. Discussions were all group based as you just did a worksheet the whole time.
great class! grades come from 4 tests + a final (none of the questions are structured to be tricky or too bad), discussion activities, and an interactive textbook. you'll be good on the tests as long as you actually understand the material, which is easy since the professor explains everything really well and sets you up for future Chem classes
I recommend him to everyone. He gives so many hints as to what will be on the exams and is super helpful. Homework was a bit time-consuming and discussions were the most helpful. "Learning checks" were split in two parts. Individual portion and group portion and group depended on the group you chose in the discussion so be wary of who you choose.
Great lecturer but terrible examer and grader. There's NO practice exams and the homeworks don't represent exam questions. Exams are lengthy and handwritten and you will lose points for your wording. Grading is hilarious that he curved the class based on the top student, which changed nothing. The average is at C just cuz someone did great lol.
The BEST chemistry professor I've taken at UCSD. Exams are more than fair. Final will replace the lowest midterm grade. No practice exam, but learning objectives are laid out for each chapter. Exams are made to correspond with the learning objectives. Class GPA is 2.5, but people also don't come to class. The class is hard, and podcasts are not it.
I took this class first quarter of my first year; however, I enjoyed this professor. Discussions are mandatory and there were 4 midterms and 1 final; however, you get a cheat sheet and are relatively easy. You work in groups your whole discussion and have group portions for the tests. If you have a good group and TA, you should do fine.
Best chemistry professor at UCSD, explains the topics better than anyone on campus. Exams are reflective of lecture content, time is just sufficient. If you get the chance to take him, definitely do it!
Very thorough lectures and interactive homework, which helps with the difficult subject. 5 tests throughout the year, each one having an individual and group portion. The group is from your discussion groups so choose wisely. Each test also allows a calculator and cheat sheet and the last test is cumulative and replaces lowest score. Super easy.
Very easy class, in my opinion. Though discussions were mandatory if you wanted full credit on the discussion activities. Online textbook you have to buy but hw was all MCQ w/ unlimited attempts for full credit. Lowest score of everything was dropped (even tests) Tests were FRQ with 80% individual and 20% in you discussion groups so pick a good one
Prof Bussey is very fair. There is a bit of work, but it all is very helpful for studying for the test and can be redone to get full credit. There are a lot of tests (5 total). The lowest score is replaced by the final. All tests have a group portion and have generous partial credit. A cheat sheet is allowed on all tests.
This prof was amazing! He is very kind and will take the time to go over topics already covered if you need it. The bookwork HW assignments are due before he actually teaches it in lecture which is the only downside but when he explains it it all it makes sense. Very fair grader and will replace your lowest exam score.
Best professor I've had at UCSD. Such organized and clear lectures, makes tough concepts simple and explains them thoroughly, and always leaves room for questions and answers questions thoughtfully. Funny and cares about his students, and all the assigned material is easy to get through but still super helpful and worthwhile.
Grade largely based on 5 tests (4 every other week and 1 cumulative final). there are individual and group parts of the quizzes. make sure you get a good group!
Bussey wasn't the best at explaining topics, instead he overcomplicated them. He was quite unapproachable during office hours. I couldn't ask much. There was a midterm every 2 weeks(4 midterms & 1 final), which was very stressful. The group work was heavily based, the group you pick depends on your grade. You work together on part 2 of the exams.
This class made me lose interest in chem :(
The class has a lot of tests (one test every two weeks plus the final, so five total), and required a lot of studying. The discussion groups are important because you take part of the tests with your group and all your discussion assignments are group-based. He's a good lecturer and mostly explains things well, but moves quickly.
Awesome lecturer. Caring, and respectful to students.
Lighthearted vibe during lectures and covered content well. As someone who is currently taking CHEM 6A, he made certain problems easier to understand the thought process of. DI's are definitely mandatory though since part of quizzes (no midterms) were taken with your DI group. If you didn't have a DI group you'd be placed with a random group.
He's a nice person, but I now hate chem. He overcomplicates a lot too. Very dependent on your TA, I had a bad one who wouldn't go over concepts and left us behind on material. I BEG OF YOU TO GET A GOOD GROUP IN DISCUSSIONS OR ELSE THE DI WORK AND EXAMS WILL BE TERRIBLE. I had a good group and got lucky, I probably wouldn't have passed otherwise.
I honestly should've just taken chem 6a because the content that I learned in that class was taught in a significantly easier way. He overcomplicates the content. Your grade and learning relies heavily on discussion (mandatory). If you take him make sure you get a good group because you do literally everything with them including tests.
Great guy, was never not entertained in lecture and he genuinely seemed to care about his student's success. This translated to the way he would vocalize topics during lectures. Didn't mind going over a topic more than once and recorded his lectures!
One of the best professors at UCSD. Great lecturer, always made learning engaging.
Overall a nice guy and gave clear directions on what to do. There were 3 tests in total and they are like 60% of your grade, so don't mess that up. Homework isn't hard, just read and you will be fine. He records his lectures but sometimes it's not very clear, as his lectures are directly to the reading and the reading isn't fully clear sometimes.
Took his class last year! His lectures were super informative, he was super clear, and he podcasted :) Definitely take his class if he's teaching the intro chem courses.
I took this during the summer and it was all asych. I loved his teaching style & his notes/lectures were always clear. The midterms weren't too difficult. He gives you a chance to grade replace them during the final (do pt 3 of final if u want grade replace, if not, then skip).
guys i'm writing this before enrollment so you know not to take him. he's very entertaining and lively but unfortunately the lectures, readings, and discussions don't match with the exams at all. he overcomplicates chemistry and then under delivers the information necessary to succeed. exams are free response and many people do not finish on time
Be prepared to teach yourself. This man talks in the most convoluting way possible. He also is really bad at emailing you back. His tests are not multiple choice and biweekly. He also overcomplicates the questions and most of the time you're wondering what is going on instead of actually doing the exam. It's also not within the 80 minutes. BEWARE.
He is an alright guy. However, his teaching style is horrendous. All of the "reading comprehension" assignments and problem sets are from a textbook and guess what? The test is nothing like the problem sets :))) Lectures aren't really helpful when studying
He overcomplicates what he teaches. You need to do readings before the lectures which go over the same things. There are discussion activities and also practice problems but the content on them and also the readings and lectures are nothing like the tests. There are five tests throughout the quarter which takes a lot of time to study for.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT TO DO WELL!!! I love chemistry and this is nothing against the professor but rather the class. we have to do readings, discussion activities, reading quizzes, and problem sets but the kicker is that NONE of these even prepare you for the material on the exams which are every other week. be prepared to teach yourself.
Get ready to write everything and anything ever mentioned about that subject for the answers in the test questions. Quite ridiculous rubrics.
Although attendance wasn't mandatory for lectures it's mandatory for discussions. Class grade was curved by a lot 60% and above was a passing grade (60-79% was a C) 50% of grade was based on 5 tests (no midterm), which were very difficult not relating to the material in class sometimes, on average the mean score for these tests was 17/30.
Dr. Bussey tends to overcomplicate subjects at times. He has a grading scale that is awful, instead of any curves for exams, with a usual avg of 50%, exams might I add that are biweekly and 40% of your grade, he offers one exam at the end of the quarter that replaces your lowest score. Work heavy. Course is definitely passable but not recommended.
Professor Bussey is a very sweet guy but I DO NOT recommend him as a professor, specially if you're just taking GE chem. He speaks too fast, and just repeats himself when answering questions. There are new assignments and content everyday. Mind you this is finals week and he is still GIVING CONTENT. Test heavy and unnecessary stress. CHOOSE CHEM6
There are midterm style exams every other week, you have barely any time to think out your answers, and all of them are entirely FRQ. There is also a group section, so if you get unlucky with a bad group, sucks for you! He made this course so in depth for no reason, my friend in Chem 6A didn't learn half of the stuff we did. Avoid Dr. Bussey.
I have beef with all of you who rated him highly last quarter. guys please do yourselves a favor and take a different professor.
Lots of reading. He doesn't explain the concepts well that are needed for the 5 exams that are given. Going into this class, you should expect to self-study the material, but I recommend going to office hours with TAs. He says himself that he changes the grading scale depending on factors, and also he drops the lowest test score at the end.
This class is very difficult for gen ed. Superrr heavy on homework and lectures. Each unit has problem sets with only 5 attempts. Exams are the worst—4 tests plus a cumulative final. The first test average was 15.75/30, and he doesn't curve. Super nice guy, but I'd recommend going straight into CHEM 6A to save yourself stress :')
save yourself and your mental health and don't take this class
As a professor, Bussey is good. His lectures are the best thing about the class because he explains the content very well, so I'd recommend attending even though attendance isn't mandatory. However, the class is unnecessarily complicated with the weekly problem sets, readings, and 4 midterms. Good professor, frustrating class structure.
I think Bussey is a very good lecturer and his lectures are by far the mot useful piece of learning for the class. However, his course layout is horrendous. The reading reviews, problem sets, discussions, lectures, and even exams are completely disjointed and don't feel like the same class at all. Also LOTS of homework. Very hard for entry level.
The class was ok, it really depends on your group, that will make or break your grade during tests. Has weekly assignments that you are supposed to do before he explains the topic, which makes the class difficult. His lectures are good but tests can be super niche at times, does allow a cheat sheet, it's a lot of free response and wasn't helpful.
To be real Bussey isn't that bad, he does OVERCOMPLICATE a lot of his material, like there is bunch of simple stuff that can be told easier, but he js makes it much more complex. His tests are made up in a way where you have to add as much information as you can, and if the information is correct he will give you points. TAs also matter, good luck!
as a person he's funny, he's just a cool guy. but lord, readings that dont make sense, exams that make or break your grade, if you dont get a good group you're actually beyond cooked, besides that DO NOT TAKE AS GE. Do Chem6A!!!
Literally horrible, his lectures are so boring that most of the class passes out before you do.He podcasts everything, so you realistically just take notes from that. Learning checks rarely match readings, reviews, or lectures. Discussions are in groups of 3–5; pick a helpful group, or you'll get 0/3 since solo submissions don't count.Take CHEM6A
The lectures are helpful and informative. There's required readings each week, which I find boring and that it overcomplicates things. There are 4 tests every other week, which can get overwhelming but are helpful to help prepare for the final. Make sure to get a good discussion group, as there are group portions for each test and the final.
This is the worst class you could ever take for a science GE. The tests are nothing like any of the material, the lectures make every concept so impossible to understand and the quick pacing of a test every other week means you basically start studying for the next the second you finish the 1st. If you need a science GE do NOT take this class.
i hate this class just don't take it
all the good reviews are for other classes. please ignore them and do not take this class.
Only way to pass is to have a good discussion group since part of the exams is a team test. A lot of hw and much of the material did not match the tests and we had tests biweekly. The lectures helped a little bit but u have to study a lot if u want to pass. I feel like the class was too hard just for it to be an intro class. He does not curve.
Nearly thought I was going to die while taking this class. This class is harder than CHEM6A which makes absolutely no sense. Save yourself from doom and despair by not taking this class. Also we had a test every two weeks that made up majority of our grade but the homework had nothing to do with our tests.
Difficult class but good professor. Very caring during his lectures and made sure to answer any questions. Readings and quizzes that need to be done before class are pretty frustrating (but low % of grade). Learned a lot but was tough. Be ready to work in a group weekly.
Doing well on tests required literally regurgitating super specific pieces of information. The rubrics were ridiculous. He overcomplicates the content. None of the assignments prepared you for the exams, but there were SO much homework and so many tests. I took this class as a science GE and honestly should've taken 6A.
Bussey is very helpful outside of class. However, during lectures he tends to go fast to cover all the content. I would not recommend him for a beginning level course like chem4a because it is hard to keep up if you don't already have a strong foundation. TAs grade all work, but test qs are free response, so grading is on a strict rubric.
Professor Bussey is good lecturer and engages with students. Reading reviews and problem sets due every week (multiple attempts). Bi-weekly exams that are typically based on 3 lectures (written response) and your allowed a front & back cheat sheet. Hints at topics that are going to be on exams during lectures.
Prof. Bussey is a very good professor, it's just the course content itself that's difficult. It can get tricky to keep up so it's important to communicate w/ your TA and ask for help. I didn't go to lectures but I was fine due to taking the class P/NP. Grading is quite fair considering the fact some things are dropped at the end of the course.
