Demanding teacher. Explains concepts clearly and wants every student to succeed in his class and life. Don't take this class if you are lazy and don't want to learn. Awesome teacher
This teacher is assigns a ton of work. He tells you right off the bat that if you work full time that you should drop. I would reccommend definatly taking a different teacher.
He is a nice guy overall but this class is more like creative writing than it is an actually english class. It is hard to wirte a "good" essay in his eyes. I do have to say that it is not that hard of a class if you do all the essays, or at least try to do as he says in the essays, you can get away with not reading.
the most discouraging teacher i ever had, just plain horrible
if he does not like the essay, it is a "bad" essay. more discouraging than encouraging. one name to avoid for the rest of my college years.
The class is hard but well worth it. I couldn't write well until this class. He is very inspiring and makes almost every piece of literature interesting. Very knowledgeable. Takes a lot of work but the outcome is probably more than any other prof could get out of you. Teaches you how to write very well.
THIS IS A DIFFICULT CLASS WITH ALOT OF READING ASSIGNMENTS, BUT THE PROFESSOR GOES OVER THE MATERIAL IN DEPTH AND IS VERY KNOWLEDGABLE ABOUT THE GREEK AND ROMAN AUTHORS. I TENDED TO DISAGREE WITH ALOT OF HIS RELIGIOUS VIEWPOINTS, AND HE WAS OPEN TO THAT CRITICISM, AS A GOOD PROFESSOR SHOULD BE. HE IS FAIR AND UPFRONT ABOUT WHAT HE EXPECTS, AND WHIL
this is a very hard class. i forces you to write about personal experiences. if you are average in english take another teacher. If you value your millenium scholarship and are looking for an easier class do not take his class. though he did improve my writng skills by the end of the year
he graded off of his opinion
He is a overall good teacher. He gives a lot of reading assignments that you definitely should read because he has long detailed discussions about in class. Also learn to write how he wants you to write, not what you want to write. He talks about his personal life stories that are kinda of interesting. Good teacher if you don;t mind a work load.
Hard teacher. But worth taking if you go to college to learn. If you think college is just a continuation of high school this is not the class to take. This class is only for those who value an education.
I enjoy going to Dr. Carabas class. He always has interesting things to say in his lectures and I have improved my writing skills a lot.. On the downside if you are looking for an easy English credit.. DO NOT take him. He is a teacher for students willing to work hard for their education!!!!

horrible teacher. i normally love my english classes and pass with an A or B, but i'm not sure if im even going to pass this semester. He makes you feel like an idiot, talks down to you, and grades papers either pass or fail. I tried to ask for help, but he's the kind of teacher that just doesn't care about his students. never take him. run fast!!
There should have been more time on the stories, not just seeing if you can read alot. The test was very hard, unless you can remember 10 sentences in the book.
horrible teacher. he wants you to attend class and won't hesitate in putting you down in front of everyone if you didn't bother reading so if you don't want to be passed off as an idiot, read. his essay-grading is biased but he claims it isn't, contradicts himself a lot.

Self centered professor.never take him you will regeret at the end of semester. Take him for your own risk.
Reading material was difficult. Profressor wouldn't really help students. Had to withdrawl from class
Professor Carabas is a teacher who lives what he teaches. He believes in giving his students a really difficult time because deep down inside, he feels that's how students learn the best. His teaching style makes sense once you've finished reading Socrates.
Take his class if you really wanna learn. Take his class if you really wanna fail. Take his class if you really love him. Take his class if you are very talkative. He require student to talk talk talk talk talk....... SUPER TOUGH GRADER ON PAPER!
Just like a snake of two mouth. self centered guy. treat you very good at beginging of semester and at the end he dont care at all if you ever payed for the class. grade you as he want. Take this class if you want to fail. He dont teach what you need to learn but his personal life.if you want to pass and do grate in collage do take him.

I found him to be fair and a good instructor. He gives great and interesting lectures, and some nice historical background for the text. He is critical on the papers, but if you are decent writer, and truly address the subject, you should do well. He's tough, but if you are smart, want to learn, and are not afraid of a little work, you'll get an A
I took him for 101 and 102. I can see why people straight out of high school would have problems with him because he actually expects you to do the reading and bust your butt to improve your writing skills. Take him if you want to be a better writer. You're in college now, kiddos! Suck it up and do the work. You get the grade that you earn.

If you want an easy A, and don't want to do work don't take this class. But if you want to learn something and work for a grade. Take him
This teacher was very helpful but the cirriculum and expectations were difficult.
The worst professor I've ever had...avoid him!!
He's a know it all, he sucks at grading...worst professor ever!! seriously dont talk him!
I had no problem with him. My first essay got a disappointing D, but it got much better from there. I can honestly say that I have learned more from this teacher than any other this sem. I really believe the skills I have learned will be used throughout my entire college career (and beyond). Thanks Dr. Carabas. If you want to learn, take him!
Don't take his class! He feels that he is teaching at an Ivy league school when it is just CSN! If you are a girl he will give you at least a B in the class. No wonder the class started out with 30 plus people and by the end of the semester only had less then ten people. Again DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!Not worth the aggravation!!!
My first impression was that he would be very hard and i wanted to drop. I got a D on my first paper but ended with an overall B. He is fair, and gives you real writing skills. Not as hard as it first seems. Only assignments 6-7 two page essays. VERY NICE GUY. IF YOUR LATE TO CLASS JUST DONT GO!
I dropped the class because I was bored to tears. The assignments he gives are awful and he is so impressed with himself it is hard to learn anything from him. I would avoid this instructor like the plague.
DONT TAKE HIM !!! omg, he is a pain. he is a good person, but he wants too much he thinks we are graduates and i just didnt make it. he is good for the intelligent writers that write like shakespeare
You read the story yourself at home then go into class and he reads the same story to you. Add 2 tests, 1 research paper, and some short papers and that's the ENTIRE class. He adds some insight and there is no doubt he knows the subject very well but he makes it a chore to go to class. I HAD some interest in the subj before coming into this class.
A tough class, no doubt. However, I have learned more in this man's class than any other college prof. I have taken. Highly recommend for COMP 101. It will challenge you, maybe even lower your GPA... but you will have improved writing skills upon completing the course.
Carabas is very interested and passionate about what he teaches and you can learn alot about the subject from him. His class is not that hard, just do the work and he is pretty lenient. If you actually do all the reading the class should be easy.
I gave a fairly neutral rating here earlier. I rescind it. He lost my final, even though I watched him take down the grade. He lost two of my other assignments. I didn't think the college hired those with Alzheimers.
Dr. Carabas is amazing. He is helpful, always in his office, and his class sets you up for life. I'm a senior at UNLV and I have had many professors tell me how great my papers are. I get extra credit and have even been asked to do presentations on them.
Useless proffessor. Does not except excused absences even if a doctors note is written. Also does not show and remorse for losing a family member. He says he grades on improvement, but this is lies. I got an F for semester and got C's and D's on papers.
Professor Carabas may have a PhD, but he is still teaching at CSN. Yes, he is passionate about his profession, but he does not know the difference between constructive criticsm & just plain being rude. If you have the patience, take his class. I do not recommend taking his class if you are an incoming freshman. Also, he has a staring problem.
Prof. Carabas is demeaning and extremely rude. He is difficult to understand as his assignments seem to differ depending on his daily attitude. I would not recommend this professor to anyone. I have felt that my work is under appreciated and he will not take the time to guide and mentor.
Dr. Carabas is a very educated professor. Students who say he is bad are lazy and have no zest for learning. I have never learned so much about life and english from a teacher before. Especially because I hated english before his class. He is a tough grader, but a good one, come on people, challenge yourself for once, and you will learn a lot.
Professor Carabas is a great professor. My writing has improved so much because of him. He also doesn't grade on average, but instead improvement. This definitely helps if you received F's and D's but A's later on. I definitely recommend him!
Look for an Eng instructor elsewhere! "Dr." Carabas is VERY difficult to work with. He does everything for his own convenience with no regard for his students. He ignores phone calls, emails, and doesn't listen when you approach him in person. He may know a lot about writing, but he needs to learn how to treat others before he starts teaching.
Although he is intelligent, he has narcissistic tendencies and is very difficult to work with. He finds pleasure in dishing out displeasing grades to his students. Even getting a B in the class is nearly impossible. Do not take ANY of his classes
Dr. Carabas is a great professor who cares about students learning. He will tell you up front that if you are expecting an easy A, take another professor. I probably will not get a A in the class, but have learned so much. Isn't that what college is about--learning.
HE IS TERRIBLE! Do not take him. Dr. Carabas was a challenging teacher, which I don't mind I know it's good for me. But let me tell you not only was he degrading to me in class but insulting to my intelligence. He was so rude and hurtful. He actually made me cry after class. Take him if you like being humiliated!
RUN RUN! he want student be able to write like in novel. he is not only teach english but the most rude professor ever! i do not recommend him.
Took Dr. Carabas for both 101&102. It was NOT easy, as is to be expected: the best things never are. If it weren't for this man, I'd be a horrible writer and would never have enjoyed the success I enjoy today. This class is ONLY for those students who are willing to WORK HARD to improve their writing skills. NOT an easy A.
I loved having Dr. Carabas for a prof. I was a bit worried going into the class from some of the comments on here but put in a basic amount of work and you will do well. He is not an easy grader by any means but he really improves your writing and understanding of english.
Yes...Dr. Carabas is difficult. I did like his essay selections, and he really does try to open up our feeble minds. I somehow managed an A-, but it was not easy at all. Take him if you want to be challenged, especially for preparation for University English level classes, or if you wish to pursue English as your major.
Definitely what I'd expect of a University level course. I pulled an A+ by studying super hard and putting extra time in at the writing center to ace the paper. Overall, he was very difficult but taught the material well and answered all our questions. I recommend him.
Very bad teacher, too vague with the work that he wants. He trys to keep you after class is over.I would not recommend him at all,I dropped his class, because I ended up not needing it.
To be honest, I was not excited about studying ancient texts, but professor Carabas is an engaging lecturer, which made this class an awesome experience. The class is not difficult: all you need for the tests is a basic understanding of the texts that are explained in class. Also,we all were treated with respect, so some of the posts took me aback.
I liked the criteria of the course, however the professor was very rude and when i stayed after class to ask about I grade that I received, he became defensive and verbally attacked me. I believe that he did this because my paper expressed political views that differ from his own. He constantly lectures on his political agenda which is annoying.
I think he should no be teaching because he is really rude to students and he grade criteria is really bad he does not give any reviews at all, extra credit or attendance points. Take my advice this guy is not a good teacher
I failed his class. It was my fault. I quit. But not w out improving my writing. He's really helpful and actually takes the time to thoroughly correct your paper. Some students can't handle that and take getting back bleeding paper personally - their ego can't take it... so if you're one of those... either suck it up or don't bother.
He gave us an assignment to do which he never helped with in class. Each day in class we recited and broke down poems. Never any real help or direction with the assignment.
Very Knowledgeable Professor Lots of reading
This is definitely a university level class. If you like to be challenged take it. At first he can seem kind of rude, but as the class went on, he is very likable. He grades hard and if you dont keep up, dont plan on passing. I got way behind had to drop this class bc its A LOT of in depth analyzing and you can't skim through the literature.
What I remember most about this class will be us discussing different kinds of purple, in dept history of HIS Greek heritage, and how the "Italians founded not only America, but Las Vegas as well!..... I have to say I am greatly disappointed in the lack of knowledge I obtained from this class, and wouldn't recommend it.
Esperian saved this joint ENG 223 class. Carabas appears to be nice, in my opinion at least, until he opens his mouth. He is condescending, a "PhDeity" who WILL make you feel like your work is inadequate. It can be viewed as constructive, but honestly it just seems like nit picking.
He really just likes to hear himself speak. He rambles on about things that have nothing to do with what you are reading at the time. You much have you book you read every class, there is an essay due atleast once a week. When it comes to essays he is very contradicting, the topics provided suck as well.
This class is very difficult. The professor is very intelligent but also very strict. Make sure to read the chapters that are assigned and that you do all the homework and study for the test in order to pass the class.I would not recommend this class but if you have dedication and do the work you can pass.
great professor
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER TAKEN. I learned NOTHING in his class. He is unclear with instructions and rude when you ask for clarification. DO NOT TAKE , STAY AWAY. 3 of us took him and all failed .
Horrible professor... Lack of providing assignments, information, and good teaching skills. The only thing he had was a good syllabus.
Dr. Carabas is not a good teacher at all. He grades your papers very harshly. He lectures about topics unrelated to English. I had to drop because I was getting an A in every class except his which I had a very low D. Everyone in my class agreed he was no a good teacher. Take another class if you don't want to be incredibly bored.
Dr. Carabas is definitely a difficult professor. He will tear your papers apart, but his intention is to make them better and make you a better writer. He is definitely an Honors level professor. I took him for 101 and 102 and was one of the few students to receive A's in both classes. Take him if you want a better understanding in writing.
Dr. Carabas is a very nice teacher. His class is easy as long as you read the text (also easy). The only homework assigned is reading from the book. If you go into class the day of discussion and you haven't read it, he will make you write an essay on the essay if he finds out. You get a few essays and he is a tough grader but also a good teacher.
This teacher is ridiculous. He will sometimes notify you when class is cancelled, sometimes he will not. You will have to play Russian roulette with your gas and find out. Cancelled class 5 times in the fall term. Grades everything harshly and doesn't let you express yourself in your writing. Please beware. Do not take this course with him.
The worst teacher ever. He is boring and rude to students. Test is about "quotation" in the books--not multiple choices. The most ridiculous thing is that one chapter he said it won't be in the midterm and then in the mid term he said"I forgot, I messed up with other class", so that chapter we didn't review also in exam.
Dr. Carabas is such a tough grader. The first paper I wrote he literally tore me down and said I stink at writing. I didnt cry or get mad because I knew I could have done better on the paper. So I did the rewrite like he requested, I worked on it for 6 days just to make sure it was up to his standard. And when I got the paper back, "F".
He does not keep you updated on what is your grade on the class. Even if you ask him for your grade he will say " oh, your doing fine, dont worry about it" He syllabus is very unclear. He is very proud of his Greek heritage and expects you to read over 100 pages of literature in one weekend like as if you dont have work or other classes.
good teacher. make sure to read the text BEFORE going into his class & participate in all the discussions or he will call on you. Only homework is reading and writing essays
Have to write multiple papers, but it's not overwhelming. He grades on writing progress and improvement. As long as you show improvement, you get an A. Readings every class with discussions. He likes participation, could help your grade if you're borderlining.
It's hard to tell what he wants from an essay, which is frustrating. His grading is ridiculous. He doesn't hand back essays right away or updates you on your grade. He calls on you in class, and can put you on the spot. He is rude. Anyone can pass his class without a doubt but it isn't fun. Worst English class experience ever. DO NOT ENROLL!
He wasn't necessarily as bad as most others are painting him. He absolutely makes you work for your grade. If you were told throughout high school that you were an amazing writer, he will make you feel inadequate. If you can take some heavy criticism though, he has some really great advice to give, and you will come out of it a better writer.
DONT TAKE HIM EVER!! Automatic F if your paper isnt 2 FULL pages and the next time you re-do the paper it will be 5+ pages. He is rude and expects you to know more about the author than what you are reading. He expects A LOT from you and the paper assignments are difficult and you cant change what topic was assigned to you. So your stuck with it.
Easy class, as long as you give good papers, you will pass with good grades. The class contain few opinion papers about 2 different plays that was read over during past classes.
