Very animated and entertaining teacher. Excellent store of information. He is very fair and will tell you exactly what he expects, although his standards are high. Pay attention, take notes, and participate. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
Yeah, he rocks major socks! Seriously. The best teacher EVER!
Best professor a student could get whether at a community college or regular university. Dr. Cardoza instilled an enthusiaism for European history in me. This guy knows his stuff and is very confident in his teaching abilities with good reason.
Mediocre. Talks with his pope voice too often. He is humerous and entertaining, and so is his ever changing hair.
He grades too hard
If you're under 23, do not take him. He is way too weird. He thinks he's Mr. Omega because he has a PhD. If he was all that great, he'd be teaching at the university level. He seriously teaches the class as if it were a 400 level course. He's just not recommended!
Very good teacher. Do your work, don't be lazy and u should have no problem in his class. He is very knowledgeable about his subjects and extremely competent. Cordoza is very sarcastic and keeps the class interesting. You won’t be taking an easy class but if you want to learn the subject he is the way to go.
Best professor at TMCC.
The best teacher I've ever had. He's very knowledgable, funny, interesting, and amazing. On a side note, he's very crush-worthy if you have a thing for quirky people.

This was my 3rd class of his, I've taken PHIL 210, HIST 209 and this semester CH 202. He's amazing but for you slackers out there, you do have to make that little brain of yours work a bit. Tom makes the material come to life and you understand where the people of the specific time periods were coming from. I would highly recommend him!
As a person he knows what he is doing and talking about - as a professor he is a hard as*. He gives even the "smart" and WELL educated kids F's on their papers. If you are one to struggle this is not the instructor for you.
Tom is an excellent professor. He is very knowledgeable in the subject and has high expectations of his students. His classes are very entertaining and he is hilarious! Take this class if you need an Art credit. I will definitely take another class with Tom.
This wasn't a hard class. be prepared to watch a movie and spend hours going over a list of questions. He has a sense of humor, but can be lame. There isnt homework except 10 moments you write during a film. 2 take home test.. you really have to B.S. your way through them. And nothing is ever good enough for him!
Great teacher! His class is extremely challenging, but very rewarding. He expects quite a bit from his students, but gives lots of feedback on essays and seminar discussions so it is not difficult to improve.
I just took Mr. Cardoza's on-line class and overall I would recommend it to a friend. YOU get to choose whether to do two essays or two exams. I chose the two essays and my greatest advice is to not procrastinate!!! If you fall behind the night before your paper is due will be hell, and you will not get a good grade he is a hard grader so do well!
I just finished his class online. His grading is hard, seems like he contradicts himself a lot. Do NOT procrastinate, you will suffer.
Tom is a great teacher. He has a good sense of humor and likes to keep things lighthearted. He tells you exactly what is expected of you from the start, and leaves it up to you to meet that expectation. I can only assume the people that think his classes are hard are the ones that don't bother to show up or think they are in High School still.
Dr. Cardoza is a total cheeseball, but makes class very fun to come too, I would change him, and yes, he grades hard, but it made me want to work that much harder on a class I among others thought would be cake.
Was an extremely hard grader, but was very helpful when I went in to see him about my paper. He comes off as the grinch on all his online instructions, but he is very friendly in person. You have to read!!! There is no way you can pass the class without reading the text. He makes his own text, which is cheaper than a regular CH book.
There are 2 paper for your grade. They're designed to make your writing concise, yet packed with detail. Despite the difficulty, he is very helpful & more than willing to work with you. If you work hard, show effort and do what his assignments ask you too, you know what grade you're getting. This is very much a worthwhile class.
Professor Cardoza made this class simple and easy. At first I struggled a little. He made himself very clear and concise what he expected of us as students. After that, it was one of the funnest classes I have ever had and easy to boot. What can I say Tom, you rock as a teacher.
Tom's class was a challenge-- and there's nothing wrong with that. If you watch the movie with a critical eye and treat it as if you were writing an English report, you will succeed. If you're doing the class correctly, you'll gain an appreciation for the subtlety of movies--this coming from a student with no initial interest in film.
Challenging. One paper or two tests is your entire grade
He is really good instructor! He has a great motivation to teach to students. Also he tries to make his class fun and clear. I love his teaching. If you are not be lazy, you will get a good grade in his class.
Outstanding professor. Created a custom book so you only have to buy ONE, and it is much cheaper than all other classes. Dr. Cardoza cares about the topic and his students. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had! Actually made Core Humanities FUN! Definitely take this class!
Took the summer class, grade consisted of one of the following: 1) Two multiple choice exams 2) Two short essay exams 3)A 10 page, comprehensive paper you can do from home. The professor is helpful, fair, and professional. He is clear on requirements. I took the paper option, and be aware: it is a lot of work, and he expects clear, intellegent work
Took his LotR hum class - awesome! Discussion based lectures so you must do reading as it's part of your grade. No tests, just 5 papers (give lots of text references). Directions are very straight forward. Can get tedious towards end of semester, but his wife gave some great extra lectures.
I took his LotR class: amazing. Tom is an inspiring teacher, but don't let his sense of humor fool you...his class isn't easy. Finally, a teacher that expects college level work! His discussion based lectures were refreshing - speak up! I can't begin to explain how much I loved his class. I can't wait to take another!
Tom is a good teacher, he has fun in his lectures, and wants the class to participate with him, Analyze the film he assigns and do the reader and you will do good, your grade consist of writing in your reader and participation so show up and do the work and you will have fun learning in his class. Good teacher would recommend to a friend
Excellent!Fun class that is very demanding, but extremely rewarding. Learn so much more that I could ever imagined. He is a deep thinker, very smart, and brings a sense of humor to class that stimulates and enriches his teaching. Never a boring class. A class everyone LOOKED FORWARD to attending every week! A+ 5 stars. A shinning star of brilliance!!
I took the online summer class with Tom. He is great! He's a somewhat difficult grader, but you can always email him the assignment before hand and ask for suggestions before it counts for a grade (that's what I did). He cares about his students, and even in an online class, his sense of humor comes across strongly. Highly recommend.
Professor Cardoza comes highly recommended. He does have a reputation for being a difficult grader. I think that if you did well in ENG102 you should fare well with Professor Cardoza. He makes himself available for questions, he is fair, talented and insists that you work for your grade.
I took his online class and it was a great class overall. Good sense of humor in his text book and he is very helpful. He is fair but makes you work for your grade. I would highly recommend his class.
Professor Cardoza is a brilliant instructor who cares about his students. He is accessible and has a great sense of humor. If you don't mind reading I highly recommend.
Professor Cardoza is a brilliant instructor who cares about his students and wants them to pass. He is accessible and helpful. Highly recommend if you enjoy reading.
Great Teacher not easy but you learn a lot. He knows his material very well and seems to really enjoy teaching. Always ready to help you.
Great teacher. I took him online and his book is very interesting. You will learn a lot and if you do the readings (there is a lot) you should get a good grade.
Incredible teacher. He loves teaching, he's very knowledgeable, and is always willing to help. He teaches a lot of good writing skills that are applicable in any field. As far as discussion goes, always be prepared to say something, because if you don't, he will call on you. Overall, great teacher, would highly recommend.
He is one of the best professors I've had. If you intend to take a discussion/literature based class with him- do it. He loves the material, and will be excited and light-hearted the whole semester. He is clear with what he wants: short and clear writing. Tailor your papers to that single standard and you're golden. Thanks for the semester Tom.
By far one of the most helpful professors I've ever had. Really helps develop your speaking and writing skills. You never know what to expect and class is always interesting. His material he covers is interesting most of the time too which makes it easy to read. He is one of the most knowledgeable people I know, he knows something about everything
Tom Cardoza was hands down one of the best professors I have had. He always goes out of his way to reach out to his students and makes sure he is available for guidance whenever a student needs it. The class was awesome! Well thought out films that allow you to think and critically analyze film as an art. Take his class!
Show up, and talk. Easy! All you do is watch movies at home, write 5 sentences about them and show up! Only 2 tests ever
Dr. Cardoza is a great teacher, I took him for Art in Film and we watched comedies all semester. So long as you show up, do the work, and watch the films, you should be fine. He's very funny and is a pretty nice guy.
Thomas Cardoza is a character. He truly does fit this class perfectly. The tells you exactly what he expects from you. I would recommend buying the movies because some of them are heard to find at blockbusternetflix.
Professor Cardoza and his class is quite good, for an online experience, at least. He, unlike many professors online, is quick to respond to emails andor communicate what he wantsthinks. Rarely a day goes by where you wont get at least one message from him. He seems very passionate about teaching; he offers proof-reading, office visits and etc.
Cardoza is an excellent professor to take! He has his own book for you to read for this class, so you have to buy it. His reading is so understandable and you get into the reading. Grading is based on the midterm and final (final includes essay) which is tough because you have to study on your own. He doesn't hand out a study guide. Motivational
As long as you do the reading, you should pass this class with flying colors. I took it online and you're required to do a weekly discussion post. Professor Cardoza is always available and even held sessions to meet up with him if you didn't understand the material! Tests were exactly the same as the study guides.
He is a great professor. I took this over the summer and you definitely have to read the book. There were no papers but you had a weekly discussion you had to do that went along with the primary sources. The tests are proctored but straight forward if you read. If he holds study sessions before tests, GO TO THEM!
A great professor! I took his online class and I have never actually read the text for any class like they say. This one I did (your grade depends on it) but the reading is engaging and funny at times. It was a great way to learn the material. I highly recommend his classes!
Took his Art of Film class on the Marvel Avengers. It's all discussion based class. He is very hard on papers but he will give you feedback on what you need to work on. Towards the end of the semester, I started getting A's on my paper. Overall the class is easy it's just the papers are a little bit challenging. Take the class!
Such a great experience taking Professor Cardoza's CH 202 class online. The textbook he wrote is very clear, interesting, engaging, and even funny at times. I took CH 201 at UNR and was miserable the whole year... this class was not only very manageable but extremely intriguing and fun. Two tests and a weekly discussion was not asking too much!
I took the Intro to Film, the Avengers, thinking this was going to be an exciting class. Oh man was I sooo wrong. Yes we got to watch the Avengers movies but he makes you write 6 stupid sentences and grades you as if you are writing an entrance paper into Harvard. This class was not fun. I didn't enjoy it.
Dr. Cardoza's textbook is very engaging, approachable, and is written in a way that just sounds natural. His class is pretty simple as long as you are self-motivated to stay up with the readings. A blog post once a week, one midterm (MC), and a final (MC w/ essay) were all pretty easy. I would recommend him for winter online CH 202.
He was my favorite professor by far. Classwork was very simple. Just watch a movie, answer a question, and give 5 examples of supporting evidence. He was also very kind and worked with me through personal issues. :)
BEST PROF I'VE EVER HAD! There is a lot of reading (it's a CH class so that's unavoidable), but Tom's textbook is very easy to understand and is actually entertaining. There's one discussion post per week, one midterm, and one final. He also offers a significant amount of extra credit if you don't do well on the tests. Take this class!!
I took this class over the Summer, and Tom was ready to help at any given moment- even thought it was online. I honestly know him better than any other professor I've had before. He genuinely cares about History and how we can learn from it. HIGHLY recommend any class taught by Tom because he's awesome!
Tom was an amazing professor. He was very helpful, understanding, and often funny. His textbook was long, but enjoyable. I originally rented the textbook, but actually decided to buy it because i enjoyed it so much. I know Tom better than any professor i've ever had and I took this course online.
He is a very nice and helpful professor, always willing to help out and answer your questions. The only bad thing is that he is a super tough grader.
Mr. Cardoza is very nice and caring. He understands his students MUCH BETTER than lots of other teachers do. He is willing to listen to your situation and willing to solve it with you. Read his book and you will be fine. The book looked tough but the materials aren't that much. They are interesting, useful, and inspirational. I would recommend him.
I took this class online after reading that Cardoza was a great teacher, this was not my experience. He was late to get our tests to the proctors, we didnt have any grades until week 8, and he changed the syllabus 1 week before finals drastically. The textbook was biased and informal with many grammatical errors. Easy A but be ready for confusion
The professor understands life happens. He is willing to work with you. Plus, there is just the weekly discussions and three 3-5 pages essays. You do the work and you get an easy A.
This professor definitely knows his material. Very intelligent and provides really thought provoking readings that make you look forward to the next section. Only a discussion post once a week and 2 essays for the whole semester. I've definitely learned a lot and its pretty straightforward to get an A.
The main issue is that it takes so long to get graded papers back.
Thomas Cardoza has been my favorite college professor. He has taught me useful writing skills I know I will use for the rest of my life. I never considered myself good at writing or reading until I took his class and he truly pushed me and gave me confidence. Such a helpful teacher and truly a nice guy.
This class isn't too bad, but you definitely need to do the reading. No quizzes just a weekly discussion and the midterms and final. Yes, there are TWO midterms and a final. Make sure you read because your grade is mostly the big exams. Other than that, Thomas is a nice guy and he does offer quite a bit of extra credit.
We were forced to read an expensive book that the instructor wrote that contained many typos and errors. The instructor didn't seem to have it together. I tried to come to his office twice. He wasn't there either time in spite of listed office hours. Wish I could just not show up to work.
By far my favorite instructor. I took his MCU class and it was so much fun. I looked forward to class every single time. We watched the Marvel movies in order, one film per week, and wrote a very simple 5 sentence paper on each. Send/show papers to him early and he will help you with feedback including on the midterm and final paper. Very easy A.
He is a great teacher who knows a ton about history and really enjoys it. He gives feedback on both the midterm and the final essay if you just ask. He provided us with the online textbook for free and will work with you to get a good grade.
Dr. Cardoza is a professor who truly loves what he teaches and truly wants his students to pass. He has written and provided the text for the students, he just expects you to read and understand what is being written. If you don't, he is available by email and even offers face to face study sessions (this was an online course). Loved this class!
He is a great Professor who cares a lot about his students and he never grades unfairly.
I absolutely loved this class and he is by far the best professor I've ever had. He really understands that CH is not a class everyone wants to take and doesn't make it super time consuming. There is only the weekly readings and discussion posts, then the midterm paper and the final paper. He is great at giving feedback and answering questions!!
I wouldn't take this professor again, the class is purely student responsible learning- he doesn't post any lectures or go over the material himself so you are basically paying full price for a class that you're teaching to yourself. Not an online learner so I got nothing out of this course especially considering the professor doesn't engage.
Tom is incredible! Very caring and answers all questions thoroughly. The papers are a challenge, but I already see the difference in my writing for other classes. It is a major skill I will use often. He also reads drafts and offers guidance. Just do the work and you should enjoy his course and the coursework! The textbook he wrote is amazing!
He was such a kind, and understanding professor. He was very lenient, and truly wanted you to do your best and succeed. I would take this professor again. He was truly a gem.
well the class itself was not terrible, but I was not interested in learning anything about the medieval culture. Your have to read lots of passages and have discussions. However the only assignments you have is a discussion 1 time and week and two papers, a midterm and final. The work load is very manageable, not the best class learning wise.
nice and understanding professor, but did not provide lectures or many teacher led discussions, etc. difficult when the prof does not provide any guidance besides being available outside class. be ready to read long passages weekly for class. overall, not difficult, but very student-driven.
As a result of Covid, class was online (asynchronous) and Professor Cardoza had a weekly check-in to let students know he was available for help. He encouraged Zoom meetings. The discussions helped to provoke ideas for the written midterm, and final. However, they were not graded. The course grade was determined by the midterm and final (1 pg ea).
Grade was largely on the midterm and final papers (3 pages each), if you follow instructions, you can do well and if you need to make corections, you will be told exactly what you need to change to get a better grade. Tom is willing to work with you and wants you to do well. Would recommend, just be ready to read
Discussion boards are mandatory miss one grade drops he provided his own book hard to understand due to Greek language. 5 because he will WORK WITH YOU if you fail and try to help you get a better grade. The work itself is difficult nothings on google :(
My very first time taking a summer class & with Professor Cardoza. I must say he is one of the best teachers I ever had. He was very understanding and provided great feedback on assignments. He provides extra credit assignments which bumped my overall grade to over 100%. Lots of reading but easy assignments. Highly recommend. Take him if possible!
This was the class I stressed most about this spring semester--I felt overwhelmed knowing that this was unlike anything I had ever done before. It covered so much about ancient history and the analysis of it. The grade was based on synthesis and the understanding of the material. Tom was always willing to help and communicate with his students.
I cannot stress enough how much Tom will benefit your higher education. He teaches you how to be concise like no other Professor. He will work with you if you simply ask. All films are available at the library, though you can stream or rent like I did. He does this to save students money. Do the work, reach out if needed, and you should get an A.
A W E S O M E professor! Would most certainly recommend this class for sure! Very understanding, easy class, just do the work. He is one of the best professors I have had at TMCC. Highly recommend!
Professor Cardoza seems to be a good professor, if it were any other class I would probably enjoy it a lot more. Most resources are given to you but the essays are very strictly graded. I myself don't benefit from just reading material I do better when listening to the professor talk and explain things, that is a fault of mine for taking it online.
You will have a weekly discussion post that may or may not get graded at the end of the semester and three papers to write that aren't all that hard once you understand what is happening. I had three family members who took this class before me and so they helped me out a lot but even without their help it's not that bad as long as you read.
Tom is a great professor and a really cool guy. He gives extremely punctual and useful feedback for the papers, and you just have to participate in a weekly discussion. The readings can be long and are specific so there won't be much googling in this class. This class wasn't too stressful for me and Tom is a very nice, understanding professor.
I thought this class would be easier since it was asynchronous and it pretty much is except for the midterms and final. There are 2 midterms and 1 final and it's an essay that's 3 pages or less, no exceptions, and it's mandatory to use 30+ sources. These assignments were supposed to replace the "tests" but in reality it was way harder. Don't take!
Thomas is such an understanding and kind professor. He gives you an overall grade based on 3 papers (you have to read a lot to do these). These do require 25+ sources each and are difficult to write but he will gladly go over rough drafts if you email them to him. He is also very accessible and gives great feedback to help with the upcoming paper.
He provides the textbook (which he wrote). Don't be intimidated by his syllabus. The class really is simple. Read one chapter a week, plus a handful of primary sources. The semester is divided by three papers. Each paper is a puzzle that you put together with every source. The weekly discussions are your friend when constructing these papers.
A lot of reading so try not to procrastinate. As long as you stay on top of everything the final is a cakewalk and he is interested in everyone's viewpoints and no answer is the wrong answer.
This class is divided by two one-page papers and they are the only two things you will be graded on. A brief chapter in the free pdf textbook that Tom wrote and no more than two brief primary sources per week is the extent of the reading. Each paper is a puzzle that you put together with the primary sources. Don't be intimidated. This is easy.
Only class I've taken that I received
SO MUCH READING. Each week is another chapter of the textbook in addition to 2-3 primary sources, however there is very little submitted work besides a discussion every week and 2 MASSIVE semester papers. The Semester papers really test your knowledge so it's important to do well on those but besides that this class is very easy and low maintenance
Highest quality class I've ever taken. Incredibly well organized and clear. IMO it's far above what one would expect to find in a 200 level community college course. PhD in European History, Masters in Military History, teaches at TMCC because he likes the area. I'm lucky to have crossed paths. He's incredibly helpful answering questions.(350 char)
This professor is a tough grader. If you do not go by what he says for his essays, it is a automatic zero. He makes his lectures on his book where if you do not meet his expectations that he will give you a zero. He is not good at communicating and does not give good feedback. Highly recommend any teacher besides him. Trust me.
Do note take this teacher at all costs.
I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone. There are 2 essays and a discussion every week. Mind you, the discussions will NOT be graded until the very end of the semester. The first essay is worth 300 points and the second essay is worth 500. You will have no idea your grade when turning in the final essay. Don't take this class.
Prof Cardoza is really communicative which is super great for an online async class. He responds to emails in a timely manner and sends out emails to the class for any updates necessary. He provides the textbook and any outside readings. Do the readings and don't procrastinate and you'll do great!
He doesn't grade anything other than two papers. Two papers being- Use only his thoughts and readings, use a minimum of 9 citations, 10 - 20 preferred, on a double-spaced single page on otherwise intricate, thought-provoking questions. He's also weirdly classist towards medieval peasants?
The class had weekly discussions and two exams. The exams were essays based on course material, so be sure to read up and interact with the material. Cardoza is a very understanding professor and a great human to interact with inside and outside of the academic setting.
One-size-fits-all teaching style.Students with disabilities or dual-language backgrounds may struggle. Expects material already mastered and may call using notes “not doing the work.”Expressing concerns can be framed as complaining, even though he himself has publicly complained. Best for students who thrived in the American classroom & work alone.
