avoid math 125 at all cost!
very boastful.. doesn't respect anyone. Doesn't reply to your e-mails.. Lots of writing in class which makes no sense after all.. Exams are hard.. Not the kind of person you want to get acquainted with..

not an approachable guy at all, very intimidating. tons of notes which leave you still confused sometimes. you are better off following the book instead of him. tests are very hard and determine almost your entire grade. i hate this professor
SO MANY NOTES; a funny guy during class but not very understanding and obnoxious about grades. You have to do homework in order to keep up with the class notes.
Well duh, you have to pay attention and go to class. The hardest part of the class is that the test includes definitions and explanations, something I never had to do in high school. Lecture notes are very helpful, and you get extra credit if you turn them in at the final. Tests accurately reflect what we learned in class, and I learned a lot.
These people below me are insane.I never missed a lecture but still didn't know what was going on.Prolly bc he gives u so much info to write u cant keep up.Tests are very hard and all of ur grade. If ur a ACTUAL college kid who wants to do other things aside from math125 in life unlike these kids, be afraid
The first 2 exams are pretty easy, but the last one is brutal. He makes the subject harder than it should be. There was only 1 TA for 600+ students. He asks T/F with explanations (on last exam) and definitions on all exams/quizzes. You can get a good grade in this course, but it will take a lot of work. He goes fast so go to lectures.
This isn't as people make it out to be. You cannot miss a class or else you will be totally lost. There are homeworks that are extrememly high in difficulty, but you can work with whoever you want and they only grade 2 out of 5-6 questions. Office hours are a must in this class cuz they help you out a lot. Tests are pretty easy if you study.
I took this class after Business Calc thinking it was going to be a lot easier since it is linear algebra, but I underestimated it and ended up having to drop it. He had a test scheduled for the day after Spring Break which is ridiculous. The homeworks are so hard that you have to go to TA office hours, but the TA is in a tiny room with too many st
Worst class I have taken at U of I . Class is made much harder than it should be. The business school is looking into doing away with at a requirement as they're starting to realize it has such limited applications. I would avoid taking this class if at all possible. Simply put it sucks.
The homeworks are amazingly hard. The tests are ok. Overall a hard class. If you miss one class you will be behind. Makesure you have a few friends in the class because it is really hard to do the homework on your own.
I got an A+
the very first hw of the semester was incredibly hard. i took hours to finish just 4 sums. ridiculous.
It is obvious he doesn't like teaching the class, and it reflects in the course.
My god, such a hard class. Had a panic attack after the first test and called my mom, sobbing. Good reality check, though! Ended up with a B+, finally. He is a really good teacher, though. Get to know him outside of class and he will help you.
Carty is a very intellegent professor. be prepared to study and do work. the homeworks are difficult, but very possible. if you go to tutoring you can get 100% on every homework assignment. the tests aren't that hard. never miss class, or you will be behind. overall, i really enjoyed the class and the material.
do REALLY good on the first and second exam...they're pretty easy if you just try a little. But make sure not to f*** them up because you will need them to help make up for the third exam which you probably will not do as well on. Overall, an interesting class
He tries to be funny, the class isn't difficult, an overall alright course
Must have some intelligence and work ethic to do well in this course. Attend ALL lectures. Hmwk is hard, but u can get A's by going to tutoring hours. The 3rd exam is the toughest, so do well on the first two. Make sure to study for the exams, they're tough. He's funny, intelligent, but intimidating. The professor is good, the course is hard.
Tough class, but if you work hard it will pay off. Go to office hours to get help on homework. He will never give you the answer, but he will make you think about it and learn. He's tough, but you learn better because of it. He's also more willing to help than it may seem.
Class demands about 20 hours a week if you want to do well and even then your not guarenteed a good grade. He curves test, but only to make him look better. My roomate did better then me on every grade but with curves included, i ended up a whole percentage point better than him. Unreal that Carty rewards the bad and punishes the good students!
Liked him as a person, but makes the material harder than it should be
much harder than it has to be. homeworks are nearly impossible to do on your own, and the tutor hours that cartys not at are useless. really nice and understanding guy though.

If you are willing to do the practice problems and go in for the free tutoring (five days a week, twice a day) for the graded homework, and attend nearly every lecture, you can get a B or above in this class. It's an extremely structured class! If you really want a good grade, you can get it.
Carty mentioned on several times that he didn't know why he was teaching the class; he said it was worthless. I agree. And, he makes the time spent in class a real joy (sarcastic).
carty is great. he's so handsome and sexy. he is such a wonderful professor.
Hard homework that's hard to do without tutoring. Normal difficulty exams. Don't expect notes on returned homework or exams. Coursepacket a must.
homework is hard, tests are hard but curved.
the grouch + old man fart + a possum + connan o'brain = tom carty.
Okay Carty don't take it out on your students just cuz you were the fat kid everyone picked on.I got an A in his class but no thanks to him and I think he's the worst professor, he goes too fast, is a jerk when you ask him qs, and he makes conflict exams at 6:45 AM on Friday. Frankly, Carty is a good reason why siblings shouldn't interbreed
Here is an unbiased opinion: This class is a tough one, but if you work hard enough you can get an A. Probbly not the easiest class ever but it can be done. Go to the help sessions. Do the practice tests. Go to class. That's all you gotta do.
DO NOT take his class!!! his exams are extremely difficult compare w/ the other prof, exams are mostly conceptional, just try to avoid him!
WORST CLASS EVER! WORST TEACHER EVER!WORST IN EVERY CATEGORY!
The class is pretty difficult, but structured. Some incompetent TAs but not Tom's fault. I thought he was very helpful outside of class hours and even bumped up my grade when he shouldn't have.
probably the most demanding class i have taken here, but also probably the one in which i learned the most. carty explains topics with the utmost clarity, and makes sure his students know what is expected of them. no surprises on exams, and homeworks are difficult, but helpful. overall, i'd say carty is one of the top professors on this campus.
This class is too hard for a 100-level course, especially when most of the students in are the class because it is required for their major. Carty complicates the material with excessive writing and definitions. That being said, lectures are optional, but if you miss a few, you'll be lost. Make sure you go into tutor hours for your homework.
As I sit here with another classmate of mine studying for the math125 final, I can only wonder one thing. Is Thomas Carty a man or just purely demonic. We have already spent a combined 6hrs studying....on just the latest stuff we've done. He sucks, his curriculum sucks, and my life sucks because I am enrolled in his class.
This guy is fair. He answers questions when u ask. There are very helpful tutoring hours everyday for the class. DONT BUY THE BOOK; U DONT NEED IT!! GO TO CLASS! Sit in the front so you can pay attention. Dont be intimidated by what others say. There are old tests you can look at online, so you always have an idea of what to study for the test.
Great class, great teaching. All students saying that it sucked dont understand a single thing about business. Take an advanced econ/finance/logistics class and you ll see how extremely helpful and easy this class was.
Really hard Teacher!!! tests are ridiculously difficult... id advise taking a different teacher
good teacher, funny. Teaches and interesting class. Those who do poorly in this class must not pay attention because everything is very well explained in lecture. Not an easy class but is very enjoyable.
Carty is a great lecturer; highly recommended for students that want to learn. His tests are not easy, but they are fair content-wise. The textbook sucked thus making the homework assignments insanely time consuming. A problem in the homework required looking up a table of integrals to figure out, but of course the table isn't in the book...
Carty was a pretty solid lecturer and if you engage yourself in the material and actually go and participate in discussions, you will get a good grade. Also the exams are very similar to the practice exams that he posts.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! He has a terrible temper and shouldn't be teaching at U of I. He isn't fair in his exams, and FLYS! through his lectures. God forbid you walk in 2 minutes late. He has gone through 2 boards already.
Very solid lecturer. Go to lectures and discussion and be engaged in material. Carty is not a "coddler," i.e. he won't give you points on a test just for complaining. He has very thorough notes in lectures, so be sure to write down everything he says. Use class notes way more than the book.
Great teacher. Go to lecture, stay on top of HW and discussions. Wants you to do well and helps you to succeed if you take the initiative.
He is a funny teacher who knows his stuff. If you go to lecture and study for tests, this class is a breeze, and occasionally fun when Carty is on his game.
He's one of the best teachers i have had so far. Even though there are a lot of people who dont rate him hi on here, the only reason for that would be that they cant figure out that you have to study more than just the night before an exam. Do your homework and study and youll love Carty. Really nice guy and more than willing to help.
Awful professor. If I had known how terrible this class was going to be I would have dropped it. Avoid him at all costs.
Awesome dude great guy great jokes
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He's really interested in teaching his students mathematics, not just helping them memorize formulas. Basically, with little to no effort, you will fail his class. But with a willingness to attend lecture and study, you will come out of his class with a real and thorough understanding of the material.
Decent lecturer, but often moves along too fast. Can be quite funny, but also very mean. Exams are fair. Homework can be tedious. Discussion is useful but I stopped going after week 3. I once saw him in his office with his hair down; he looked like a pretty lady.
He is not that bad, people think he is so terrible, but I did not have any problem with him.
Great teacher. You can tell he loves what he teaches and he knows it really well. Discussion sections can be very helpful if you take advantage of the TA's knowledge. Also, to get a good grade on a test, you absolutely must go over all lecture notes, discussion solutions, and homework solutions. Do that and you'll be fine!
Carty knows his material. He is a great lecturer. To do well in this class you must study and study more. Most exam questions are right out of the HW problems. Challenging but good and fair class.
TC is a menace to society... everyone at the University of Illinois should take his class and know the mathematician inside TC... a professor to remember for the ages, and a name to remember for the future of mathematics. TC's calculus and comedy blend together to form the parametrization of a perfect class...
Tom makes a very arrogant first impression, but after a few weeks you start to appreciate his humor. He's not afraid to put you on the spot in the middle of class, so if you don't know the material make sure you're not doing anything to attract his attention. The material can be difficult, and the teachers move through it quickly, but it's do-able.
I hate when teachers post commments pretending they're students when it's obvious that the teacher is the one writing them. We're not stupid. Stop it Carty. Anyways, he knows what he teaches. To pass, you are gonna have to do and know all the hw probs, the discussion probs, the practice probs, and the lecture notes. The class is hard, but passable.
He is the right person if you are looking for a Calc 3 instructor who explains things well and has the patience to walk you through every homework problems during office hour.
In the beginning, Carty *definitely* tries to scare you, but after a while, you realize he's really a good guy at heart, BRILLIANT beyond belief, humorous, and compassionate. He will spend time helping you if needed. However, you need to actually put an effort in this class. He won't tolerate any BS from anyone.
Completely Useless. Insulted me personally every time I went to his office hours. Insulted the class constantly. The class was a miserable experience. I have would never recommend him to anyone. Teachers are supposed to be helpful and he was the complete opposite.
Funny guy. He has ridiculously difficult tests so study hard. Other than the tests the class is not tough.
Excellent teacher if you want to learn. If not, avoid him. His tests are hard but fair.
Carty's a bully and completely unapproachable. He made inappropriate jokes and insulted individuals and the class as a whole. He's a tyrant. I will say that he's good at explaining things--if you can keep up. His lectures move way too fast to keep up with taking notes and paying attention. If you can't avoid his class, find study buddies ASAP.
Carty is a decent teacher but spends most of class time on long drawn out and hard to follow proofs that will take up several pages of notes. His exams are extremely hard and he assigns a lot of homework. Good luck with this class and make sure you don't slack off
Got A+ for calc 1 and calc 2, but getting a C in math 241... I guess this says all. Try to avoid him if you can. By the way I did almost all the practice problems in the textbook, but exam problems has nothing to do with those.
As a professor he stinks, he gives the most broad examples in lecture when compared to the difficult homework he assigns and he takes too much time with definitions and theorems. His discussion sections are of little help too. But he was nice enough to curve 4 out of 5 exams one of which was the final. I would not take a class with him again!!
this class is def hard. I spent most of my time studying for it. however, carty's tests are predictable. most of the questions came out from the notes and discussion probs. When comes to tests, def. study ALL the discussion wrkshts and notes. try not to spend too much time on hmwrk probs/looking at the book.
Carty teaches you how college works. LIVE OR DIE.
Tom is definitely a good professor though his homework is very hard. But he is very awesome when you go to his office hour. I enjoyed it. He has very organized notes, but he doesn't follow the book's order. If you dont want to read the book all the time, take his class. In a word, you have to study hard in order to get a good grade.
You'd think that he was teaching too fast, but when you sat down and thought about what he was actually teaching, you would realize that it was all useless information. The homework assignments were unnecessarily difficult too. The material wasn't too hard, and the class would be great with another professor.
As a person, Carty is pretty cool. He is in your face at times, but he is funny. If you don't want to be picked on, dont wear shirts with writing he can see on it. otherwise he will call on you and say "Cubs Fan, blah blah blah." as a teacher he is tough. VERY hard class. his tests are hard but curved if everyone does bad. good luck.
he rates himself on this site so dont trust eveything that is written. he is an ok professor. he looks like Comic book guy from simpsons
HE THINKS THAT HE IS VERY GOOD LOOKING.. HIS HAIR LOOKS LIKE SQUIRREL... he might as well make his own textbook because he teaches things not in textbook but he is too lazy to do it n his excuse was that he wants to give students different perspective of calc... it would be helpful to math nerds but half the class are desperate enginerds...
this is the worse teacher ever. the homework is so hard. i went to every class and office hour and it is still HARD. TAKE A DIFFERENT TEACHER!!!
The class in itself is difficult, but I don't think he is that bad of a teacher. He uses creative examples to explain the concepts. His test can be extremely difficult though.
If you skip going to lectures and discussion sections, and skip doing homework you will fail. He requires effort. He has a different teaching style from most math teachers because his class isn't cut'n'dry since he uses creative examples and humor. Everyone typically fails his 4th exam (Greens, Stokes, et cetera) so do not worry too much about it.
Don't let his jovial attitude fool you. Carty is a hardass and a ****bag when you need him to "be cool" the most. And I only save the d-word for very special people.
"Tough but Fair" is the best phrase to describe his classes. He is not like any other math professor I've ever had... that's a good thing.
Apparently he's under probation for failing so many kids last year. I guess that gives a good picture of how he is as a teacher.
THE WORST THAT MATHEMATICS AS A WHOLE HAS TO OFFER!!!!! PERIOD.
The civilized world does not possess the vernacular to describe how truly BAD this man is as a teacher. All that comes to mind is... Vindictive, sadistic, rude, trash, bulbous, cruel, tyrannic, hypocrite, and several "%$#@ing" other words. Not worth the chalk he wastes scribbling incoherent symbols on the board with.
great guy kind of an ass but still great guy one of the few non-researchers who teaches and loves to do it
Carty is a decent teacher. But his personality is so...The rudest professor I've ever seen. You'll find out if you dare to piss this man off.Attention!ASIANS!This dude definitely hates Asian guys.Based on what I saw, the students caught cheating by him were all asian. And I'm sure that some of them were innocent. But it's Carty, get used to it.
Why didn't I switch teachers when I had the chance?!?!? Don't be a fool. If you care about getting a good grade in Calculus III just take a different teacher.
Yells too much and will insult you if you don't say anything. His examples are confusing. Only reason I passed the first test was because I took pre-calc already.
Is SO unhelpful... had to drop the class because I was failing and wasn't getting anything out of his lectures. He teaches in the most complicated way and gives the most complicated problems for homework and tests. DO NOT take a class with him...
Carry is HORRIBLE. He uses the most useless examples in class that do not help you with the unnessicarily hard homework. Tests are also rediculous. He thinks he's funny & makes u feel stupid if u don't understand something. DROP now, it a waste of valuable time.
I had a situation occur that required immediate attention so I missed class for about two weeks. I went to Carty for help and he was absolutely no help. He was focusing on the fact that I missed class (even though he had an excuse letter from the Dean) rather than helping me catch up in class. I can confidently he was a complete jerk. Had to drop.
Carty will make you work for whatever grade you get. That said, by having you put in the work, you take it on yourself to learn the material. Active listening a must. In his office hours, he's just a normal guy and will try his hardest to help you learn. I think he's funny
If you take calc III with Carty you are on your own. Good luck.
You will learn a lot from Carty. Unfortunately, his class doesn't depend on how much you learn. In this class, it doesn't matter how much you study. What matters is how poorly the rest of the class does. I went into one exam expecting a high A. I got a 50%. The curve was 26%. If you have him, good luck, and get ready for a bad semester. Sorry.
I had to stop attending lecture half way through the semester because I realized that I actually get stupider when I listen to him. He confuses you and makes you believe you don't know any math.
Awful. He is horrible and makes everyone feel like they are idiots in calculus. Take this class and prepare for the worst
He is a good lecturer.Don't blame him if you get a bad grade...it's your problem. The past exams are really helpful.
Carty is a terrible professor. His lectures are geared towards the top 5% of the students in the class, while the other 95% have no idea whats going on. Coupled with a useless TA, it was the worst math class I've ever taken. The past exams, his only study tool, weren't even on the same material that he was testing us on. On top of it all, he's rude
Alright, all you hear is that Carty is terrible and the class is impossible. False. Go to class, take good notes, go to discussion, ask your TA questions, do the homework, study the practice problems and the practice tests. Use other resources to study (Pauls Calc Notes/Cramster/Friends). Carty's teaching style is different, not bad. Work hard!
It can be an intimidating course but if you put the work in, you can get an A
One of the worst instructors I have ever had. He flies through the material in class and blames students if he cannot finish his lesson. His intimidation makes it difficult to ask for help.
Tough class. People complain a lot, but Calc III is not an easy subject. The TA's are not too helpful, but you can go to his office hours and see if that helps. Go to lecture, take the notes, spend a lot of time going over past exams. A good grade is not unattainable, but it will take considerable effort.
Carty is a tough cookie. His lectures are tough to follow and a good chunk is deriviing formulas (you only need the formulas and when to use them). He is also pretty mean and his exams are not easy but he curved them all. He's not unreasonable, though but you may need other forms of help in class
Great teacher, great guy, doesn't stand for complaining or excuses. A bit vulgar but funny. Very tough class, but worth it.
I had Carty for 241 and 285. He is one of the best lecturers I've had at U of I. However, his exams are usually unnecessarily difficult and I did find myself learning a lot on my own/from the book. Carty is a really fun, if not harsh, professor, but be prepared to work your ass off.
Hardest teacher I had when I was a freshmen. Calc III is hard, but not compared to the upper level classes. Still remember him staying I would never make it in a math major. Great office hours. Expects you to read the book.
worst teacher i've ever had for math he makes the worst examples, he's terrible at explaining concepts and makes you feel stupid when you ask questions exams count for a lot good luck to anyone who has him as a teacher
Worst teacher I have ever had.
You guys at UofI are lucky. Now he's at Bradley University as of 2013. I took calc1 in high school, understood it, and am currently retaking it because I didn't take the AP test. Tom makes round 2 so much more complex. I understood everything in high school, now not so much. For me, he's funny, but tries and fails at explaining everything clearly.
Confusing when it comes to explaining material, isn't always available and very vague when explaining problems prior to homework or exams. Good Luck to anyone who has him in the future. My suggestion transfer out asap if you can.
Mr. Carty is one of those teacher's you call a good guy, but a bad teacher. Teaches concepts as if we should already be experts, and has an odd and poor way of explanation.
Not a good professor to take at all. Does a very poor job in explaining his topics and often makes no sense. Avoid taking any of his courses at all costs
Awful professor, often put random material on tests, often will pick favorites in class, cannot teach material well and does not follow the book well
Teaches at Bradley now. His lectures link/flow together well, making reviewing for finals much easier. Tests can be challenging. He is extremely helpful in office hours; make use of them. He writes pretty much everything important on the board; make sure you jot it all down for good reference! He's also pretty funny. One of my favorite professors.
Surprised to see a low score. If you want to learn math and not just get an easy A, Tom is awesome. Gives easy to understand lecture notes so you're able to think about concepts, and not focus on writing. Best of all, he genuinely helps you out and makes sure you understand without making you feel stupid. One of the best teachers I've had.
He's actually laughably bad at explaining stuff, and does i clicker things for credit he expects you to know the material before you even enter the class. he gives a week notice before midterms, it's actually ridiculous he makes an easy as heck class hard
Carty is a weird one - he does a good job of convincing you he's an amazing lecturer, when really he may not be. He moves WAY too fast and there's very little graphical / diagrams involved. Plus his tests you must move VERY quickly as well. If you have a fast brain, you'll enjoy Calc III with him.
