Reviews (125)
His lectures are very boring. He talks very slow and draws out all his sentences. By the end of the semester pretty much half of the people didnt go to lecture. The tests are mult choice and not cumulative, the class is easy and you dont have to go to lecture.
I think he is a misunderstood professor. He seems to know his stuff. However, he can get a little boring when he goes off on long tangents, espically about Poland (Yes the country). His exams are easy, mult. choice, 50 questions and in class. Overall, if you can get through the lectures, its a pretty easy A. I never read the textbook.
Chivens is a very nice guy. He has a lot of energy, although the class turns really boring after the first semester. You receive a study guide and a review session before the exam which..if you don't go to class, go to this! It's extremely beneficial and will make your last night cramming pay off.
He has a lot of interesting things to say about his studies in Poland, or the role of 'Web 2.0' in the information age. For the most part, though, none of it was relevant to the class material (i.e. exams). Anything said that was relevant was drowned by the sheer volume of other random irrelevant information. I found it very hard to pay attention.
Good lecturer, pauses often, but it seems that he just wants to say exactly the right thing so you get the right idea. Dry humor, real nice guy if you go to office hours. Some very interesting stories. The class is also very interesting if you take the time to get into it.
Prof. Chivens is endearing in a nerdy way, and while his photobooth expeditions can be entertaining, sitting through his lectures is like pulling teeth. It takes him an hour and a half to present 45 minutes worth of information. Grading is fair, and you should be able to pull an A with a decent amount of effort.
Chivens is the man. He's really funny and super approachable. Definitely take this class.
If you listen to his lectures, his humor is kind of funny. Makes exams pretty easy so you understand them-- i recommend his class fo sho
He's such a nice guy!! The class isn't hard, and he makes it interesting.
The material in this class is very easy and his lectures are very clear and easy to follow. His exams are slightly difficult only because of the large amount of testable details.
he's really enthusiastic about the material, which makes it easier to get through. this class is graded fairly, and he keeps the exams easy to understand
He rambles a lot but he truly tries to make things easier for students. He's funny and entertaining too but his rambling can be a bit confusing. Overall though the class is easy.
LOVE LOVE LOVE HIM! very funny and interesting. does like to ramble and can get confusing. truly cares about the wellbeing of his students and grades farily if not easily. I would totally recommend him! Plus he is kinda cute sometimes!
Professor Chivens was an amazing professor. Anthropology was by far my easiest class. Just do the review and your should get a 100 on the exam. His lectures are very interesting.
I will greatly miss Chivens.
Great professor with a funny, quirky sense of humor.
not that interesting of a class but easy
The class is straight forward and pretty easy. Professor Chivens truly cares about his students, always willing to help. He rambles a lot but in the end he teaches the class in an entertaining way. His creative humor is funny and he's cute in the way he acts.
Showed obvious passion for the field of anthropology and students. LOVED his slides of his kittens or his family stories. Always tied his lessons with an interesting anecdote. I will miss you Professor Chivens!
Oh he's just great. i am totally excited for the major and hope he'll teach more classes in it.
He's a super nice guy for sure. Lectures were super boring at times but he's an interesting guy. Exams weren't too bad if you studied. Has a good sense of humor. Recommended.
I would recommend this class. Prof. Chivens really wants all his students to learn, is entertaining, and enthusiastic about anthro. Tests are easy if you study and use the review sheeet. There are a couple papers, but nothing drastic. It's pretty easy to get an A. (He told our lecture he was dying for a chili pepper, so I gave him one, lol).
I absolutely loved him - while the material can be a little dry, Chivens clearly wants to make it interesting and accessible to his students. Very approachable and friendly, interesting experiences and stories, and cool way of presenting some topics. I would definitely recommend this class with him!
Easy class- attending lectures helps lessen the amount of information compilation prior to exams, which can be passed by creating a comprehensive study guide from the outline the professor provides.
Professor Chivens was funny in a quirky way. He tried to be interesting, but sometimes the lectures would just drag on. The exams are fairly easy...don't worry if you don't get through all of the reading. Overall a pretty good class! Great for the R&E requirement.
Ok, so listening to this guy in lecture is like listening to the 18 minute gap in the Watergate Tapes. He speaks, then he stops, and then he picks up with another idea and completely forgets about the other topic. I have no idea what he is talking about 1/2 the time.
While it is true that Chivens can be a little hard to follow, the material is simple and the work load is quite light. He is also a fascinating person outside of lecture, and a hilarious guy during it. Overall it is a pretty easy class.
Professor Chivens is a really funny guy, but the lectures can be extremely boring. On some day they're entertaining because we watch clips off of youtube, but other days you can't help but fall asleep. Overall easy class: 2 papers and 2 exams - if you don't have an interest in anthro meet your R&E somewhere else
I love Professor Chivens!! I didn't really care about anthro before taking this class but i enjoyed it. I really liked his lectures. I thought they were funny and informative and he seems really nice and smart.
I loved him! He is brilliant, funny, and cares about getting important concepts across without overwhelming you. Totally mellow and awesome even though everyone in that lecture was freaking rude. Workload is light and exams pretty easy. Take this class with him!
Enthusiastic, funny and easy to follow. He makes this already easy class fun and made actually Want to go to lecture.
This class is over the top boring-no exhaggeration. It's an easy A, maybe A- but it's not worth listening to chivens ramble. He pauses in the middle of sentences and does not make any point that it's impossible to follow. Good news is you really don't have to go to lecture. Just read and do the study guide that he gives a week before the exam.
He's a really nice guy, and genuinely cares about his students and helping them succeed. Rambles a bit, but some of his tangents are interesting. Ridiculously easy A; I found it very difficult to motivate myself to do anything for this class.
Chivens is a great instuctor. He truly cares about his students, as well as his own teaching style and ability. Lectures can be interesting. Not a bad class overall.
This class is BORING. It is not terrible and it is not hard be seriously avoid if possible, it is pointless.
As a professor, he was great. Always tried to make material more interesting with videos and such. He presented A LOT of material, but nicely summarized the important stuff on the exam review sheets. The material though, I thought was total BS at times (ex. 5 different sexes!?!) - but the class was an easy R&E req. fufiller.
Chivens is alright. He's not too tough but he is definitely not interesting either. He wants his students to do well. Anthro 101 is a fairly easy class. You don't need to go to lecture or do the readings, just know the study guide before the exams. The exams are the study guides.
Lectures are extremely boring, you really don't need to go. Do the review guides and know everything on them. Class is pretty easy overall, theres a couple papers but they're not terribly hard
TEEEDEEEOUS IN THE EXTREME.
He is a good, interesting man who is extremely passionate about what he teaches. Tests and essays aren't too difficult. Good class to fulfill R&E requirements.
Really fun guy. He will sometimes struggle to articulate what he's trying to tell you but if you pay attention in lecture and attend the review classes you should do great. Pretty interesting class too, but not for everyone. The review lectures before exams are critical he will tell you all you are expected to know specifically.
Good teacher and class is not required. DO the readings just before writing the paper
He is an entertaining professor and likes to break up lectures with videos or music. He sometimes go on random tangents which I found interesting, but others found annoying. If you go into office hours, you can learn a lot of random but interesting things and he is very easy to talk to.
Chivens is a nice guy. He likes what he teaches, and cares about how well the students do. I personally thought his tangents in lecture were very long winded and boring, but others enjoyed them. The class is ridiculously easy; two 5 page papers and two 50 multiple choice question exams. AND he gives you a study guide telling you what you must know.
Adorable, cheerful, and nice fellow. Tends to babble during lectures but he's just so likable! He's a great advisor as well if you're interested in majoring/minoring in Anthro. Class is painfully easy; definitely an easy way to fulfill R&E!
I really liked this class and thought Chivens was a great professor. He really cares about the material and wants his students to be interested as well. Sometimes it can be vague as to what he wants you to know for the exam so make sure to do all of the readings and complete the study guide. You will get a lot out of the class if you actually go
Terrific professor and interesting man. He's very quirky and very funny. He knows the material very well and runs a very fair class. Prepares you for the exams well, so going to section only matters for participation. His own personal experiences are awesome. One of my favorite teachers all year. I'd recommend him to anybody with ANTHRO. interest
Pretty easy class. Just 2 essays and two 50-question Multiple-Choice exams. Oh, and definitely attend lecture. They show videos and stuff which can appear on the exams.
Great blow off class. Easy, yet interesting. Would love to take again.
Took this class because of all the great ratings. I deeply regret it. Chivens could not be any more monotone and uninteresting. His lecture is 1 big run on sentence. I was so interested in the class before and now I absolutely hate it. Also grade is very dependent on GSI. Awful, take another blow off class.
Was interested in this class before but not what I thought it would be. Some interesting parts but some boring. Heard another prof was better. Discussion is useless! Lecture.. eh not that useful. Chivens tends to be drawn out. Not that hard though.
Easy class, especially for engineers. Lectures are really boring, but the videos he shows will be on the exams. Nice guy but loses the class' interest fast.
Chivens is a great professor. However, you will need a lot of 5 hour energy to pay attention in his class. After the first couple of lectures, his voice will get monotonous and you will start to see less and less people at lecture. The book is more helpful than his lectures Nevertheless, the class is interesting and material is easy to understand.
He's so nice. He's one of those people that you know is an excellent father. He isn't traditionally attractive, but he is because he's so wonderful.
At times Thom's lectures were confusing and devolved into "Here's Something Irrelevant That I'm Interested About!" but overall he's pretty easy to understand. He's also incredibly adorable, gives great anecdotes and in general obviously loves the subject he teaches. It's a good class to take if you're looking for an easy A.
He is the nicest most caring professor. If you are ever confused by anything he is great with office hours and emails!! Take him!
Too easy. Too too easy.
Awesome guy, great teacher, easy grader, and he gives you everything you need to get an A. Very interesting subject, and the readings are awesome! Overall it is a great class, but discussions with the GSI can be boring occasionally.
Lectures are boring but helpful. Gives study guides that clearly state what is on the test. Discussion is boring but participation matters.
I took Anthro to take care of distribution but full enjoyed the course because of Chivens! He's lively, funny, and explains most course material very well. He tries to keep reading assignments to a minimum, and assignments are manageable. He creates a class that is interesting and fairly low-maintenance.
Chivens is pretty easy, but so hard to follow in lecture. He is a great guy, but does not lecture in a way that is engaging or easy to follow at all. Overall, I would recommend this class just because it is pretty interesting and it's not too hard.
The concepts are simple to understand, easy, and surprisingly accurate to life outside the classroom. The lectures are sort of random and it is hard to follow where he is going or what needs to be taken from said lectures. However, for all three exams there is a study guide with everything you need to know, so the aimlessness is tolerable.
Amazing class which makes you think differently about the society we are raised in. The tests are based exactly on the review guide so if you memorize that you can get an easy A. There were a few papers but they weren't too long.
Prof. Chivens is very laid back; at least in the Spring Term, he cares more about discussing the material rather than going through the motions of a PowerPoint slide. This makes an ostensibly boring intro class very engaging. He is also extremely approachable both in and outside of class. His exams are very straightforward as well.
This class if easy. I never did the readings but I did go to lecture and basically just sit and listen but not engage all that much and I did just fine. Be ready to disagree with a lot of the stuff this class tries to teach but just have to let it go. Tests are super easy too, only 50 minutes and mostly multiple choice.
Incredible difficult to understand. Extremely boring lecturer. Makes the class have almost no clear goal to it.
Professor Chivens seemed to ramble on and on in lecture, but if you pay attention for the entirety of lecture, then you can grasp some information that will prove extremely helpful for the exams. Honestly, you don't have to do the readings, listen in lecture, and attend discussion and you'll get an A.
Really nice and cares about his students. Gives very clear, comprehensive study guides for each exam. Not the most entertaining lectures, but he can be funny and there are often guest lecturers.
Really nice and cares about his students. Not the most entertaining lecturer, but he can be pretty funny and there are often guest lecturers. He also gives very clear, comprehensive review guides for each exam (super helpful)!
Brings in relevant examples to lecture and is a really nice guy, but class is too intense for 100-level anthro. Reading load of a 300 level humanities class, an extra project, and then the usual lectures. I heard other profs for the class don't assign/test on nearly this much reading. This class takes more time than my upper level science classes.
I took this class for a requirement and I regret it. Pr Chivens is really nice and can be funny, but the lectures are so boring it is impossible to pay attention. Attendance is mandatory for discussion. Tests are no all multiple choice, there is fill in the blank and also short answer. Only take this class if you're interested in the subject.
He's straightforward and will let you know what is on tests beforehand. The lectures arent exceptionally fun, but some of the topics are just dry. He is a caring prof and I really liked him.
Chivens is a really nice guy who you can tell is genuinely passionate about his classes. His lectures can be boring, but if you miss a few it's no big deal. He publishes a comprehensive exam study guide before every exam, so as long as you do them you'll get a great grade with minimal effort. This class is low stress, and is an easy 4 credits.
Professor Chivens is a nice guy and gives quirky and teacher-funny (funny for a teacher) lectures. He is incredibly open to meeting in his office hours (which are always extended). The exams make up almost the entire grade and he gives a study guide that has everything on it. Know the study guide get a somewhat easy A.
Professor chives is a great man. Exams were super easy also, great class overall
Professor Chivens was really kind and passionate about his subject. He covered a lot of interesting material that sparked thought during lecture. Exams were pretty easy and discussions were interesting. I would definitely take another class from him.
Honestly one of my favorite professors here. You can tell he really cares about his students and is passionate about the subject.
this man is a legend. take his class
Just show up (most of the time) and know what's going on in lecture and you'll be just fine. This is the perfect R/E requirement. Not a hard class at all! The topics are also really interesting!
Chivens does a really great job of making his lectures entertaining and engaging. While I did not personally care for the subject, I enjoyed and looked forward to going to Chivens' lectures. His exams are very easy if you pay attention to lecture and do the readings. I highly recommend going to his lecture.
Honestly, just a boring teacher and course. While it is an easy A (did it without reading/buying the textbook and book) because of the reviews, basically all of the lectures was Professor Chivens just reading off the slides, going off-tangent, and stuttering a lot.
Dr. Chivens is the best! Great prof, interesting, and study the review guides and you'll do just fine. One of the best profs I've had in my college experience so far and going to lecture is actually pretty interesting, especially with Chivens. Highly recommend him.
Chivens is so fantastic! He wants everyone to get an A, and if you consistently attend lectures you will see that he gives you hints and specific info that will be on the exam. All the lectures were really interesting and the final ethnographic project was easy. Discussion sections required for the grade.
Did not go to lecture once after Exam 1. Wrote the term paper the night it was due and got an A. Detailed exam reviews are provided. Attend your discussion section for participation points and you will get an A.
Amongst the most caring of professors and definitely awesome, I walked into this class just to get Humanities credits, and ended with an A+. Do the work, put in the effort and do not bs you will do great. He is not stingy, and if you miss a few lectures its not a big deal just do the reading and put effort into the homework and few (easy) papers.
Chivens made online Anthro 101 a breeze! Was super understanding of different schedules and time zones and had extremely interesting lectures (not a humanities person at all so yay). Readings were common but most were interesting enough to get through. Overall great class.
LOVED him. He was very funny and understanding. It isn't mandatory to go to lectures, but it really helps and he sometimes gives helpful hints to those in the lecture before exams. Some lectures were a bit hard to stay awake during (movies), but overall a great class to take if you're looking for a pretty easy A.
I really wish I would have taken his class in person because I can tell he's a super funny and compassionate guy. He is also very knowledgeable and approaches all units from different perspectives. Whenever I thought he was going to leave a group out of the narrative, he made sure to include them. Pleasantly surprised. Take his class if you can.
I can tell he's a super nice and knowledgable person! He really cares about students and was super accommodating.
Although Chivens might not be the clearest lecturer, he cares about the wellbeing of his students. When Covid hit, he was very generous to us on grading. His 1.5 hour lectures became 15 min lectures and he would apologize if it was more than that, he reduced the essay from 7-8 pages to around 3-4, and he even gave us 2 chances on the midterm.
Chivens seems such such a caring guy and is so inclusive in his lectures, I wish I could've taken this in person. There is a lot of reading homework but it is all directly out of a textbook so very easy. Grading criteria is very clear, which was helpful in me deciding which assignments to put my limited time and energy into. Very solid class.
Pretty intense readings for homework, but very generous grader. Interesting lecture content, too. Too bad I couldn't take his class in person.
Chivens is definitely the highlight in this otherwise underwhelming class. His lectures and recommended readings are insightful and thought-provoking. I regret not taking this in person because he seems genuinely intelligent and interesting. The course overall, however, was too much width and not enough depth and it's only good as a GPA booster.
Overall he's a solid professor. He is clear with explaining the concepts and with what he expects of the students on the assignments and on the exams.
Prof. Chivens is awesome. The material is broad and the class was so easy. you don't even need to read the readings, just fill out the study guide and you will be fine on the exams. MAKE SURE TO GO THE REVIEW SESSIONS BEFORE THE TEST because he drops a lot of helpful hints about the short answers!! you won't regret taking this for R&E req.
This is an easy and interesting way to satisfy your R&E requirement. Pr. Chivens is a great teacher, and he works to make things straightforward/easy to understand. He's conscious of his students' mental health and workload outside of the course. Advice: use the study guides he posts to prepare for exams and you will do fine and go to lecture!!
Anthrcul 101 is a great class to take to fulfill the R&E and Social Science credits. Professor Chivens is definitely the go to professor for this class if he is teaching it. His study guide for the exams give you great examples of whats going to be on it.
This class was an easy way to fulfill the R&E requirement. He was understanding of students' busy schedules and used lecture capture/non-required lectures. The majority of the grade was 3 exams, but they were exactly like the review guide. Go to the review session before the exam and study only the review guide, and you will get an A.
Professor Chivens is extremely nice and personable, if only a bit rambly (in a kind of a nerdy way) while lecturing. You will get a lot from this class by just attending. It's extremely tempting to skip, but the class is infinitely easier with Chivens essentially holding your hand towards that glorious A+.
Very straightforward, he posts the review guide as he teaches the unit
Take Anthro101 with Professor Chivens!!!! He is super nice and his lectures are easy to understand and are all recorded. Main grades are three exams, but these exams are not difficult if you go to lecture. Also attend review sessions when they are held they are extremely helpful.
The lectures were pretty boring for me, but I did love learning about the primates. He was very respectful and always willing to meet or chat if you had any questions. I emailed him once to ask about the best way to study for his class and he was very kind and gave lots of helpful tips. overall really nice guy, the class was just boring.
I am an engineer and took anthropology as an elective, but I ended up thoroughly enjoying his class. He gave very clear expectations and often would give heavy hints as to what would be on the exam. I could also tell that he also genuinely wanted all of this students to succeed.
Prof Chivens is literally one of the sweetest professors I've had so far. If you're looking for a diverse group to expose yourself to, definitely take this class!
Prof Chivens is a very nice person and funny during his lectures, but I struggled A LOT with focusing in his lectures due to his rambling, stuttering, and constant "ummm"-ing. It made it very difficult for me to recall the information in lectures, so I started doing his recorded lectures, but it didn't help much.
If you have ADHD, listening to Prof Chivens lectures is torture. He's incredibly caring and obviously passionate about anthro, but it was unbearable listening to him stumble and stutter over his words. Also impossible to take notes because he will say one thing and talk about nonsense afterwards, getting to his point only after a 5 minute ramble.
dont take this class. ur first exam will be the day after the superbowl and ur second exam will be the day after st patricks day. i hate my life. wtf is a strepsirrhine??????
everyone rating badly doesn't go to lecture/doesn't put effort into listening. Chivens is nice/passionate/cares and explains terms through helpful examples, if you go to lecture and take notes of simple definitions you will easily do great on tests, there are 2 main papers that are also very straightforward and not focused on writing skill.
This is a good, easy class. I fell behind sometimes but still managed to get on track by exam day, and it's a relatively light 4 credit course.
Lots of content is covered on the exams, but his study guides tell you exactly what you need to know. The tests are very simple and you can get great grades just by making sure you know what's going on in lecture. There are two papers and some homework, as well. The textbook isn't really necessary.
Chivens taught a very straightforward intro to anthro course!Sometimes the lectures were a bit boring, but he tried his best to keep his students engaged!Overall the class is very easy if you GO TO LECTURE. There are three non-cumulative exams, and Chivens gives you a study guide that he uses to make the exams!! An easy A if you study effectively.
Prof. Chivens cares about his students and his field. He often rambles in class, but I still found it interesting and worth my time because we would get to everything we needed to. He's a very interesting guy and his class is by no means hard. His exams are very similar to the study guide and he has a few virtual class days throughout the semester.
Prof Chivens cares a lot but tends to ramble in his lectures a bit which makes it hard to listen, but the sound system was also bad so that probably contributed. Content is very interesting and the class is super easy - Prof Chivens' study guide will tell you exactly what is on the exams, just go to lecture and take notes and you're golden.
Really enjoyed his class, he's very passionate about what he does and tries to make lectures as engaging as he can. His exams for the most part are easy if you pay attention in lecture and understand the concepts covered. Very light workload as well.
He tends to ramble a bit. The lectures got pretty stale by the end, but I also was getting a tad burnt out. That said, if you study good for a week up to the exam, you'll be fine. There was a new textbook this year (which I never read) so he had to rewrite the tests, and he got better grades than he wanted, so be careful. But good overall, not hard
Professor Chivens is genuinely so kind and very passionate about the topic/teaching. Review guides for each exam are posted, and he won't ask you about anything that isn't on there, so it's not bad at all. Highly recommend his class and it's a great way to get your RE requirement.
Very chill class. Just put a decent effort and you should be good. Not much homework. Exams reflected the given study guides. However, it was hard to stay engaged during lectures because the professor sometimes went on tangents. That being said, he gives you accurate study guides, clearly cares about his students, and is very nice.
Dr Chivens obviously cares very much about his students and how well they are learning and he was very accommodating/open to suggestions. A big part of the grade is GSI dependent but the projects aren't bad. Sometimes boring/disorganized but overall not bad
Pr. Chivens is a really great prof. He clearly loves anthro and is always willing to discuss anything with you. Tests are not bad, and lectures were not boring at all, in my opinion. I really enjoyed anthrcul101, and I would def recommend it for anyone looking to get their race and ethnicity credit out of the way.
Jevons is an alright lecturer and clearly has a lot of passion for the subject, just has a tendency to go on tangents which you won't really get back to in tests or assignments. Some of the online assignments are of videos of very poor quality and have no captions so get ready to spend an extra 10 minutes on every video deciphering what's been said
Professor Chivens was a super fun professor! He clearly cared about anthropology. The only downside is that sometimes he would go on tangents about stuff, and it wouldn't be on the exams. But the exams are super easy, literally the study guides and lectures. Part of the grade is from GSI/discussion, which is super easy two papers and a presentation
Really nice guy who loves what he teaches. Only thing about his lectures is that he rambles and so I found it more helpful to watch the lecture recordings and put them at 2x speed. His tests were super fair to what he puts on the review guide. Overall great guy!
Does everything to make sure his students do well. As long as you attend lecture, you'll do great. Don't make an easy class hard by skipping.
Great professor, lectures are interesting, very clear expectations. If you show up, pay attention, and do what he tells you to do, you will find the class easy and will get a good grade.
Dr. Chivens was a great professor, and he truly cared about all of his students. Other ratings mention his stuttering and tendency to go off on tangents, but regardless, he always gets through the material. Exams are nearly verbatim of the review guide, making them very doable if you watched lecture. Show up to discussion (it counts in your grade)!
